ANOTHER WIN FOR THE RANGERS Sixteen-year-old Molly Carter has scored an off-field goal for the Samford Rangers, winning Football Queensland’s Community Athlete with a Disability Award. The awards acknowledged the contributions of players, coaches, referees, volunteers and clubs state-wide. Diagnosed with ASD and dyspraxia, Molly has been a long-standing club member, and was selected to play in Samford Rangers’ FQPL Women U23 team this year after her strong performance in the Under 15 Division 1 side in 2022. She was incredibly proud and excited to win the highly competitive award. “I don’t think about my differences when I play soccer I just play the game the best way I can. On the night it felt unreal to win and go up on stage and collect the award,” Molly said. M o l l y ’ s experience at her club has been overwhelmingly positive since she

started playing at the age of seven. “I love the people at Rangers. Everyone is important, no matter their age. People are kind and friendly. It’s easy to make friends because we all have one thing in common: we love playing soccer,” she said. Danny Carney, Molly’s U23 coach and Samford Rangers’ Director of Women’s Football, says Molly is someone that each of her teammates can learn from and rely on. She works incredibly hard in every game and training session and makes ongoing improvements on the field. “I am very proud of Molly’s achievements on and off the field. Her efforts, resilience and determination became the standard for the rest of the team to follow,” Danny said. “Not only did Molly’s skills improve over the season, so did her determination to win, so much so, she was the first to volunteer to play as goal keeper when our regular keeper was injured,” he said.

“The highlight of the year came when she scored her first goal, late in the season. (pictured) The celebration and tears from her teammates (and me) was something that I will never forget.” In turn, Molly has been grateful for the opportunities both her coaches and the club have afforded her. “My coaches have been great teachers and have believed in me and always encouraged me. I’ve made new friends and travelled with my teammates and I’m more confident and willing to give new things a go because of soccer,” she said. Molly’s latest achievement has only solidified her determination to keep putting her best foot forward for the Rangers. “I’d like to think I will always be playing soccer at some level, like the ladies who were in my team this year. I will stay involved and keep helping at the Rangers. I am looking forward to playing at higher levels and improving my skills.” Congratulations Molly for this outstanding achievement and for continuing to motivate others both on and off the field. VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD Planning and Environment Court Appeal No. 2669 of 2023

NEXT SDPPA MEETING & AGM Thursday 30th November Samford Community Hub (SCHUB). 7pm start. All welcome.

DA 2022/4057 - 2-4 Main Street and 1-3 Junction Street Samford Village For those of you who may have missed previous articles in relation to this proposed development, the Developer chose not to respond to Moreton Bay Regional Council’s (MBRC) request for more information or to give MBRC further time to decide the application and instead appealed the deemed refusal of the development application to the Planning and Environment Court (PEC). MBRC, Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association (SDPPA) and approximately 300 concerned citizens who had lodged properly made submissions, were then invited to be part of the PEC process. SDPPA agreed to represent any of those 300 citizens as co-respondents and just over 100 chose to be part of this group. A subcommittee was formed to represent the interests of these residents. To date, the subcommittee has reviewed the properly made submissions sent to the Council from those 100 residents and had a much closer look at the development application. The developer asked the PEC to bring all parties together for a ‘without prejudice meeting’ prior to any formal action in the PEC. This simply means a meeting is held where each party has the opportunity to table their concerns or interests in the development application. MBRC, DTMR and the Co-Respondents were each required to file their positions with the PEC. Anyone who would like a copy can email secretary@samfordprogress. org.au for these documents. So, after all that where are we? The review by the SDPPA subcommittee found that the top 5 issues for the co-respondents were:

These align with the issues raised by MBRC. A further update on the matter will be provided in the December edition of the Village Pump, which will be after the ‘without prejudice’ meeting. VALE DES PICKSTONE As I write this editorial, I am also planning my husband’s funeral for Friday 17th November 2023. Des Pickstone passed away Friday 10th November 2023. He was very well known in the community and much loved by many with his happy, caring nature. He will be sadly missed. I met Des in 1979 when he was a Director of the Arana Leagues Club and Treasurer of the Arana Football Club, where he spent many hours helping with the development of the first club house in Dawson Parade and with his expertise as a glazier, supplied and installed all the windows in the building. We were married in 1981 and together developed the Lyell Deer Farm at Mt Samson. We sub-divided the land in 2004 and in 2005, together with “Friends of Lyell Deer Farm”, we formed a committee and later, in 2008, registered and Incorporated a ‘not for profit’ organisation – Kupidabin

Page 4 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 24 NOVEMBER 2023

Cultural Assoc. Inc.(KCAI). In 2021 we cofounded a ‘not for profit’ Charitable Trust and registered with the ACNC. Des was very active as a volunteer fundraiser, organising meat tray raffles at the Golden Valley Hotel for the Endeavour Foundation and taking part in the Endeavour car rallies in the 1980’s. In 2011, Des organised for KCAI to take over the Wednesday night meat raffles to fundraise to build the KCAI Cultural Centre - Kupidabin Wilderness at Mt Samson. The raffles were very successful with a team of members rostered on each week.

Prior to this, Des ran bingo to raise funds for the Zonta Club of Pine Rivers, of which I was a Charter Member, starting at the Flockton St Tavern, then later moving to the Arana Leagues Club. The local clubs are members of Zonta International who have 1,133 clubs in 62 countries, supporting women and girls and local service projects. In 2001 Des received a Volunteer of the Year Award – A badge awarded by the Hon. Cheryl Kernot MP at the annual Combined Service Clubs dinner. He was a ‘great’ man and everyone loved him. R.I.P. Des. continue to be well cared for by current practitioners: Doctors Peter Bowstead, Rehna Bester, Daniel Kitzinger and Lindsey Jones. While the practice name and premises have changed, Alex and Christine’s culture and legacy continue to endure. After 40 years as a GP, we wish the best for Dr Christine in retirement and thank you for your commitment to the health and wellbeing of the community.

Another SPADEwerx Party! Following on from Dr Alex Watson’s retirement from Doctors at Samford Valley last year, Dr Christine Watson will also retire at the end of November 2023, after working and supporting the Samford community for almost 20 years. In 2004, both Alex and Christine set-up their Samford practice after moving from Cairns to support both their daughters’ education in Brisbane. They fell in love with the local area and the Samford community quickly appreciated the pair’s family approach to their practicing and the commitment they made to their patients, including many after hour calls. Under their leadership, the practice quickly built a reputation for cultivating a welcoming atmosphere for patients, which has grown into the thriving practice it is today. “We’ve always regarded it as a privilege and an honour to have had the trust the community has shown us,” Dr Christine said. “We’d like to say thank you to our patients for the respect and overwhelming support they have shown us and wish them good health and happiness.” In her transition to retirement, Dr Christine has ensured that her patients will

SAMFORD ECO-CORRIDOR CELEBRATES 10 YEARS On Saturday 4 November a free workshop was held at the Samford Community Hub to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the SDPPA’s Eco-Corridor project at the Samford Parklands. Judging by the positive feedback from many of the 55 attendees, the morning was a huge success. We thank the workshop sponsors, the SDPPA and Community Bank Samford, for providing a free venue and such a fabulous morning tea, prepared for us by Meals on Wheels. Eco-Corridor sub-committee member and MC, Bob Millar, opened proceedings by describing the background to the Samford Parklands, which came into community ownership via the sale of the former CSIRO Pastoral Research Station and associated development of Royal Estates. The workshop had three speakers. Firstly, Peter Storer reviewed the first decade of the Eco-Corridor and showed how the project aims had been met. A major aim was rehabilitating and revegetating along the South Pine River in the Parklands to restore biodiversity and increase public amenity. The high biodiversity has been demonstrated during our periodic surveys of birds, butterflies and spiders. Public amenity has been enhanced by the Eco-trail behind the plantings, which has become a very popular walk, widely used by birdwatchers and photographers, and our much-frequented picnic site. Our education program has seen us working with the Steiner School, Ferny Grove SHS, TAFE and the University of Queensland, among others. Our plantings provide valuable models for local landholders: the rainforest areas demonstrate how to revegetate along our creeks and rivers and the hillside planting is a model for those living in drier areas. Peter then summarised the results of the first 100 or so birds surveys, showing which birds you are likely

to see at the Eco-Corridor throughout the year and which species are our summer and winter visitors. Next, Council Officer Stefan Hattingh highlighted the serious problems posed by ‘one-kill rodenticides’, both to people (many children are poisoned each year) and wildlife (e.g. owls die if they eat just one poisoned rat). Enclosed rat baits may be ‘chook proof’, but they are eaten by cockroaches and other insects, which are then eagerly consumed by the chickens which then lay eggs laced with poison: this isn’t an ingredient you want in your omelette! Furthermore, the smart older rats learn to avoid the baits once they sense it has killed their peers and the population quickly rebounds. How do we solve this recurrent problem? The innovative answer lies in using Barn Owls as biological control. Stefan relayed the story of a farmer in northern NSW who installed owl nest boxes along his fenceline following a rodent plaque. The Barn Owls that moved in successfully raised a high number of chicks and ate many thousands of rodents in just one season, keeping them well under control without the need for poisons. This approach could work well in the Samford district if we install enough owl boxes and stop using these deadly poisons that pose such a threat to our health and wildlife. Just before the tea-break, Councillor Grimwade thanked all our volunteers for creating such a valuable community asset. After morning tea, reptile and amphibian enthusiast Josiah Rossic introduced us to the wide range of native frogs found in the greater Samford district (including Mounts Nebo/Glorious). Josiah described the geographical range of each frog, its preferred habitat and how common or rare the species is. His talk was illustrated with

wonderful photos and accompanied by the distinctive call of each frog (they are more often heard than seen). Although just 17 years old, Josiah has incredible knowledge of our local frogs and is an accomplished photographer. After everyone had the opportunity to tuck into a bit more food on the verandah, several people joined Peter for a guided walk around the Eco-Corridor. We thank Stefan and Josiah for such fabulous talks and to all our volunteers who helped with setting up the hall, serving refreshments and packing away. You made the day very memorable. Peter Storer

LOCAL NEWS WHAT YOU GIVE COMES BACK It’s no wonder Jeanette (Nettie) Carroll is involved with the Brisbane Chorale and Samford Community Choir. Her family sang around the piano. Even washing up was enlivened by part singing. A remarkable school music teacher encouraged her choral and piano obsessions, leading to acceptance at the Sydney Conservatorium.

“Music was always a passion. My mother played beautifully ‘by ear’, a skill I, unfortunately, did not inherit.” Teaching music led to her second passion, education. Nettie completed her teaching certificate at Teachers’ College in Sydney. “I specialised in early childhood. In the 60’s beginning teachers were ‘bonded‘, obliged to do country service. How lucky I was that the ACT drew their teachers from NSW. That’s where I did my country service and met my husband.” Patrick Carroll swept into her life in her second year in Canberra after arriving from Brisbane with the new intake of “External Affairs” trainees. Nettie asked a friend to

introduce them after spotting him at dinner. “What a whirlwind romance! He was posted to the Philippines. We were engaged in August, he left in September and returned for our December wedding. Our first home was in Manila. I missed my family, but we felt we had a purpose representing Australia.” Nettie taught in international and local schools in Manila, Dar Es Salaam, Kuala Lumpur and Washington, while bringing up two boys. “Every school I’ve taught in has been different, but the commonality is the joy children bring and the professional relationships.” In Washington, Nettie volunteered for a schools’ program promoting Australia. Now lots of Americans can sing “Kookaburra Sits In An Old Gumtree”. Back in Canberra, Nettie completed her B.Ed. Her work at the ACT Education Department in Early Childhood Curriculum led to a year as Executive Principal, managing 78 preschools. In the Peoples’ Walk at the Museum of Australia is a memorial to Patrick. “My husband’s significant work with the Australia/United States Alliance gave me a deep understanding of the US, which is a good thing now that I have both my sons and their families living there.” Modern technology has helped Nettie keep close family ties. No more Sunday letters for the diplomatic bag or expensive phone calls. Instead, regular Facetime and supplies of Tim Tams, Milo and Vegemite. Nettie’s philosophy is “Life is like a boomerang, what you give comes back to you”. “I don’t consciously think of this when I am volunteering but it’s true. I get so much back from the folk I help. Often, we don’t see the results of what we give but we know that somewhere out there someone is being helped. We make friendships with

like-minded folk.” Nettie Carroll values Samford’s community spirit, volunteering with Samford Support Network and Rotary. Julie Martin

LOCAL NEWS CO-WORKING SPACES IN SAMFORD Local options to work and network are dotted around Samford, reducing the need for a lengthy commute to the office or taking over the dining room table with an elaborate laptop set-up. The Samford Community Hub (SCHUB) features meeting rooms, board rooms and a hall, and will soon be complimented by 4520 Shared Space, due to open in Main Street in December. Chris Roberts, Director and Founder of 3D Logistics has branched out to open 4520 Shared Space after speaking to a number of residents about a need to connect when they are working from home. The space will be particularly suited to professionals looking

to network with other local professionals and business owners. “Many locals have commented they no longer want to travel into the city but are bored and lonely at home,” Chris said. “Breakfast cereals and fresh fruit will be provided by local providers in a functioning modern shared kitchen type area. We are trying to create a truly local professional environment where it feels like a second home, but provide an outward facing professional space to practice your craft.” 4520 Shared Space will feature both an open plan space as well as four private areas. Short term and ad-hoc desk requirements will be available to book online. “If there is one thing I have learnt in running a business that operates on a national scale; it can get lonely on the local front. I hope this will solve the same dilemmas for Samford’s local professionals. There are some very clever people out here that will hopefully embrace this new local concept,” Chris said. Along Mount Samson Road is another resource for local professionals and community groups. The SCHUB features a hall that can sit up to 60 people as well as five separate office spaces. There is also

a boardroom that can comfortably fit 12 people. (Pictured bottom left) A number of local professionals and community groups have made the most of SCHUB spaces, with current community activities including yoga classes, a Justice of the Peace service and regular card game gatherings. Medical professionals also often use the private meeting rooms to conduct telehealth services. Local community group Meals on Wheels is based at the SCHUB and can also cater for meetings. LOCAL NEWS IS CHRISTMAS A GOOD TIME TO SELL? I have always thought of Melbourne Cup Day as being the first party of summer. From here on in, the countdown is on to Christmas and for most of us, a short break from work. In Real Estate terms, most agents will encourage you to sign paperwork prior to Christmas but not start marketing until mid January. This is so they can have a (well deserved) holiday and know they are coming back to some listings. But for sellers, it means potentially not settling until late February. As I looked at the figures for the last three Decembers something struck me - the average Auction clearance rate in 2020/2021 and 2022 is higher in December than at any other month in the year. Part of this is because there is less stock (because Agents aren’t launching properties until mid January remember?) but the other reason is that the buyers coming through Open Homes and turning up to bid at Auctions up to Christmas Eve are SERIOUS about buying – the “tyre kickers” are all at Christmas BBQs and getting the last of the

gifts wrapped. Buyers also have more time to look for a property during the holiday period between Christmas and New Year without the demands of school, daycare and work day routines. Concentrated demand from highly motivated buyers and less stock available for them to consider usually means premium prices. So, if your property is not on the market because your chosen agency is closing or the agent is away over Christmas, then you may be missing out. Angela Harcourts Local

Samford RDA greatly appreciates the financial support from both horse and centre sponsors and is pleased that all horses in the herd are currently sponsored by individuals, businesses, local service and community groups, as well as Council, sSate and Federal members. Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club member, Robyn, recently visited the RDA centre at Samford Showgrounds to personally meet Hercules and tour the centre. She said she was not aware of the vital work of Samford RDA until a recent presentation to the Lions by President Rebecca Clemmey. Samford RDA also thanks long-time supporter Samantha Wakerley of Pine Rivers NFP Accountant and NDIS Plan Management for her new sponsorship of RDA horse Clipper. Also a ‘big softie’ in the herd, Clipper is a great favourite with many of the young riders.

OUT & ABOUT

Thank You! Samford Live is a dream made real for our small group of local creatives. We have long yearned for a place to regularly gather, enjoy and share the best of live music. This vision has not only been made real but become a real success! We are so grateful to our Samford community – thank you for embracing us! Over the past year we have been proud to present some of Brisbane’s finest groups across multiple genres: talented singer songwriters, original folk, polished Bossa Nova, Gypsy Jazz, Ska, Bluegrass and more. We’ve endeavored to cater to multiple tastes while presenting our music in a relaxed, family friendly and social setting. As one of our regulars observed: “The chance to enjoy live performances whilst building community is not only good for our mental well-being but that of the community”. To say we’re thrilled is an understatement – five sellouts, 12 groups presented - five with local artists, audiences over 1,200, and box office targets met!

SAMFORD VALLEY

It’s no mean feat for a bunch of volunteers to establish a live music series on the local calendar - the challenges are considerable. Dreaming is one thing, making it real is another: raising funds, forging partnerships, building a brand and profile, website, social media, ticketing, mailing lists, programming, and galvanising an audience. This could never have happened without the support we have received. We salute and thank: • Our local audiences - many who have become regulars and friends. • Our fantastic honorary Organising Group of musicians and our team of volunteers. • The Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association (SDPPA) for their support as we present Samford Live on their behalf. • The Village Pump (published by the SDPPA) for advertising support. • Our wonderful venue partner Little Tree Bake and Brewhouse. • City of Moreton Bay for establishment funding.

Samford Area Mens Shed Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Ray! He’s fast, but far from furious, he’s a proud family man and the Master of all things Trivial. But enough about him. Wait, I’ve just been handed a scrap of paper. It says he’s also been a Scout Leader called Kaa, reached the level of Warrant Officer Class 2 in the Army and was once voted Samford Rangers’ star football player for some strange reason. On top of that, he volunteered to work with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) and has done so for 13 years. Recently he decided to settle down, volunteering to be the builder and custodian of SAMS’s Library of Paper Books which, thanks to his hard work, started out operating on a “shelf-serve” system sorted by Authors A-Z. Unfortunately, since most of us have forgotten the proper order of the Australian alphabet – either that or slept through the whole of Grade 3 – the contents of the shelves soon turned into

laughabetical order instead, making his Returns Officer job a lot more exciting than he had anticipated. The good news is that we readers have no trouble finding a book now, seeing as our favourite author is that John guy in the section with Jane what’sher-name and the other J’s. During the winter months, Ray and his lovely wife often hit the snow fields, where the bullet-proof half of the daring duo has been known to challenge trees head-on, ending the holiday a mere two days into it. They also like to trot around the globe a lot, sometimes to catch Covid, sometimes to catch the next flight home, and Ray always returns to the Shed full of adventurous tales ready to entertain anyone who isn’t curled up in a corner, engrossed in one of those real books by Jeffery thingy. Did you know that Ray has 7 streaming TV accounts and is heavily into Astronomical Photography? It’s a wonder he still finds time to sit and laugh with a bunch of us Shedders on a Friday arvo over a soft drink or two, while we share and invent secret men’s stuff. Onya Ray! Samford Bowls Club The final “Come and Give Bowls a Try” morning for the year will be held on Tuesday 5th December, 8.30am for 9am start. Why not come and join us for a delicious morning tea, lucky draws and we will introduce you to the game of lawn bowls? No cost to visitors - wear flat sole shoes, comfy clothes, bring a hat and a sense of fun. We play on carpet under shades. Young or young at heart - you can give it a go. Register by Monday 4th. Text or leave a message, 0407 875 596. Sponsored by Samford Grove Retirement Village. Vale, Donald Grahame Crawford 1933- 2023 Don was a muchloved club member, a former Club Coach and a friend to all who knew him. Don was a U3A member and tutor in several subjects when he decided to have a go at a U3A “Bowls Class” at the

Page 18 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 24 NOVEMBER 2023

club. Initially recruiting students from his other subjects and neighbours to sign up, he also had a secret weapon, his beloved wife Terri who would provide a not to be missed morning tea. This small group would grow and grow and under Don’s care and coaching, many would become club members. Through Don’s imitative, the U3A bowls group has welcomed members to move into positions such as Club Chairman, Club Coach, Bar Manager, Providore, and PCC Representative and Men’s Representative, along with those important workers who give their time doing all the jobs that keep a club going. Don wasn’t able to continue his role, but his dream continued. 13 years after he set it all in motion, the Tuesday U3A/club members morning has 40 or so bowlers coming back each week. It might also have something to do with the fellowship and the delicious morning teas that continue. Thank you Don. 6th November was a battle of bowler vs rain when the Waterloo Social Bowls Club visited. They formed way back in 1978 at the Waterloo Hotel in Fortitude Valley. Now based at Bramble Bay Bowls Club, they have 90 members and we are proud to say they’ve been visiting Samford Bowls

Club annually for over 20 years. Whilst the weather didn’t cooperate on this visit, it was still a successful day. Some bowls were played, a delicious lunch eaten and lots of socialising done. Rapid Fire Pairs on November 11th, sponsored by ASCF (Australian Secure Capital Fund Ltd.) is always a popular afternoon for members. Enquiries; info@samfordbowls.com.au Janice Ridley

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT NEW ERA FOR SAMFORD GLASSHOUSE PRECINCT In 2020/21, Council invited expressions of interest to activate the Samford Glasshouse Precinct to generate economic activity. After working with potential proponents to explore different ideas, this process ended with none of the proposals proving financially viable. Council is now exploring options for the future revitalisation of the Glasshouse Precinct, exploring alternative ways to bring this space to life. Through Moreton Says and other consultation, Council already has a bit of a feel around the views of the Samford community, but more specific information is needed for the opportunity that the Glasshouse Precinct presents. The Samford Parklands is being developed in stages, and the Glasshouse precinct takes up around 2400m2 right in the very heart of it. The Glasshouses are a topic that I am regularly contacted about, now is the time for the community to have their say via the online survey at www.yoursay. moretonbay.qld.gov.au and click on ‘Samford Glasshouse Precinct Revitalisation Project’. You can also scan this QR code.

Meet Council at the pop-up in John Scott Park I encourage everyone to let Council know what your vision is for this area. The survey is open now, closing 4pm Monday 4 December 2023. If you would like to share

your ideas with Council staff, you can attend the community pop-up session in John Scott Park, Saturday 2 December from 9.00am - 11.00am.

Samford Skate Park I was made aware of some issues with the skate park in Samford Parklands by the community, with concerns around the design and quality of the finished product after it received an upgrade late last year. I am pleased to say that council staff liaised with residents and works will be taking place at the skate park to address issues around the concrete surface and, based on feedback from the community and council’s supplier, some of the elements with be reconfigured to help with the function of the park. Of course, while works are carried out, the park will need to be closed. While this is not ideal as it will encroach on the start of school holidays, it is essential to have the issues rectified as soon as possible. Temporary fencing will go up around the skate park during the week commencing 20 November, to allow equipment to start works. Weather permitting, this great space should be ready for the community to use prior to Christmas, hopefully around 15 December.

Please be mindful this will be a construction site during this time. Be careful if you are in the area and take note of instructions from workers. If you experience any issues, please contact my office on 3480 6455, email me at darren. grimwade@moretonbay.qld.gov.au or call Council to speak with the Project Officer on 3205 0555.

Mt Nebo Road Works Landslip repair works will be carried out along Mount Nebo Road, Mount Nebo commencing in November and expected to be completed in February 2024, weather permitting. The scope of works include the reconstruction of the downslope embankment and roadway, providing renewed access for road users and increased safety. Works are part of Council’s Asset Rectification Program with joint funding from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority. The location of works is near Westridge Outlook and they will take place Monday to Friday 7am - 6pm and Saturday 7am-1pm. Please observe any changes to road signage if you are travelling through the area.

OUT & ABOUT Samford Museum The Toy display at the Samford Historical Museum The Toy Museum was completed in 2012. On entering the room you become sentimental and nostalgic. Children and adults are in awe at it all. A wonderful and magical niche of its own, exhibiting toys with a variety of conversational pieces from many generations. So treasured by their original owners, they have generously donated and placed their valuables with the museum for future generations to view and enjoy. Dressed Dolls of all shapes and sizes adorn the exhibits, as does the well known bright yellow Tonka Steel Classic range of vehicles, books of many different sizes, big and not so big, scattered throughout. Meccano pieces have been around since 1898, the ever popular kit which every boy or girl had access to and/or played with over the years. Big prams, or should I say perambulators, mainly made from cane in earlier times. The very famous miniature

model diecast and iconic toy cars of many different makes and colours certainly added to the excitement of the game. Many hobbyists now reap the reward of their collections. Almost every youngster’s favourite is the teddy bear. Basically all the same colour, although there can be a slight variation in material tones. Size has never been the issue as long as it could be cuddled and loved. Replica doll houses for playtime were treasured and enjoyable pieces. The not so big miniature “mansions” were mostly outfitted with intricate handmade furnishings. A long slim timber paling with wheels at one end, a handcrafted horses head at the opposite end was often used in games of cowboys and Indians.

Sitting down for a “cuppa” on their table and chairs was another activity that was enjoyed by the young visitors. Small cups and saucers with an exceptionally small teapot were set out for all to enjoy. The best way to view and explore our amazing toy exhibit is to visit the Samford Museum, Station Street, Samford Village. Adults $5 Students $1. Wednesday and Sunday 10am – 4pm. Phone 3289 2743. www.samfordmuseum.com.au Come and see the Samford Museum market stall at Christmas on Main Street, Saturday 2nd December. There will be memorabilia to view and purchase.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas period. As a local community business owner, I am thrilled to be a sponsor of the 2023 Business Christmas Lights Competition. It is a fantastic initiative to encourage us all to show our community spirit and come together at this special time of year. SUMMER FOOD GARDEN TIPS With summer rapidly approaching, a new set of challenges and opportunities arise. Our summers are normally very humid, hot and wet with soil erosion from heavy rain. What a combination! Perhaps some of you stay out of the food garden altogether. My 5 tips for summer will give you another picture to grow appropriate crops and improve your food garden soil for the more ideal growing conditions from late March next year. • For heat sensitive leafy crops, use a shade structure. Each summer, I choose two beds in our patch to grow a variety of leafy crops under a simple shade structure that provides about 1m of air space above the bed. A number of root crops will also grow under the shade. • For the veg garden beds you will be using for cropping, aerate beds, mineralise them and give the beds a top-up of good compost before planting. This helps plant vitality. I also use biodynamic soil preparations to activate soil life. • For fruiting vegetables, concentrate more on climbing vegies. Be diligent in getting foliage off the ground and onto climbing frames to reduce mould potential. • For your remaining veg garden

beds, put them through a green manure crop process. From the end of December to mid March. It is an amazingly easy and efficient way to improve soil and reduce soil erosion. • For your fruit trees, pick your appropriate summer crops just before being fully ripe and let them ripen off the vine. This reduces potential for crop loss due to animals. Resources to help: • The Plant wizard in our gleanr.com. au site will provide you with all the ideal crops for our climate during our summer climate, as well as how to care for them. • I am running an afternoon workshop

Register at myfoodgarden. com.a.u Food Garden Coaching Our 12 month food garden coaching service is progressing well in our area and beyond. It’s very satisfying to work through all the key stages of transformation with our clients. Here is a comment from Justin Stoka of Samsonvale. “From a very young age I have fond memories of immersing myself in my Grandparent’s food garden. This blossomed into a dream of growing food for my family but I, like many others, didn’t quite have the knowledge or skills. As a result, I created numerous food gardens that turned into piles of unattractive weeds. Once I met Peter Kearney of My Food Garden that all changed. I listened to his vast knowledge of the intricate nature of the earth elements, plants, soil and food garden design and implemented it to create the most gorgeous food garden. In only a short time, we experience the daily harvest of an abundance of beautiful organic/biodynamic food. I’m so grateful for this life changing process.” More information on our coaching service can be found at myfoodgarden.com.au Happy gardening Peter Kearney

Sugar

consumption and tooth decay

Understanding Sugar. Sugar is a quick and easy fuel for your body and brain. But as the saying goes: too much of a good thing can be harmful. It’s scientifically proven that a diet high in sugar leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay. How Does Sugar Affect Your Teeth? Increased sugar intake in combination with inadequate oral health causes dental diseases. Your mouth is full of naturally occurring bacteria which help to keep you healthy. However, there are some bacteria in your mouth that feed on the sugars you consume. Consuming too much sugar creates a decay conducive environment which gives acid-generating bacteria like S.mutans the ability to thrive. S.mutans is the main bacteria that causes decay (holes in your teeth) and irritates your gums. Protect Your Teeth By Cutting Out: Fruit juices, soft drinks and energy drinks. Dried fruits, sweetened fruit yoghurt and agave & molasses honey. Fast food burgers. Sauces like tomato and barbeque. Salad Dressings – anything high in fructose.

What Else Can You Do To Protect Your Teeth and Oral Health? -

Brush your teeth twice a day or after every meal, using fluoride toothpaste Use dental floss once a day to clean between your teeth Visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and professional clean Quit smoking, it damages your tooth enamel and gums and dries your mouth out which contributes to the acidic environment

The Bottom Line Healthy gut = healthy mouth. Say YES to a diet rich in.. - Plants and vegetables. - Lean meats (limit red & processed meats) - Unsaturated fats - Vegetable oils - Nuts - Full fat fairy products - Consume water after every meal to help wash away lingering food Say NO to diets that are high in fructose and refined sugars and low in fibre. THE ‘SNAIL WHISPERER’ RETURNS Our next meeting on Tuesday 5 December in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start will see the return of the ‘snail whisperer’, Dr John Stanisic, who is Australia’s foremost expert on land snails, having held the position of Curator of Molluscs at the Queensland Museum from 1980 to 2006. Most importantly, John has helped raise awareness of the potential of using invertebrate species as a true measure of terrestrial biodiversity. A few years ago, John enthralled us with little-known tales about Australia’s fascinating native snails and is back with many updates about what has happened in the world of snail research in the meantime. Don’t miss this very unusual talk, which will be full of surprises. Visitors are welcome at meetings and attendees are encouraged to bring along labelled native plant specimens for our ‘show and tell’ segment. This month we will be featuring ‘plants for shady situations’. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle (bring a little cash).

At our October meeting, Angie Fairweather took us on a wonderful visual tour of the Overland Track in Tasmania, which runs from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Angie first outlined the geology, topography and climate of the region that contains a very special suite of plants, many of which are endemic. She showed fabulous photos of Button Grass fields, the gorgeous red Richea flowers and the deciduous beech (Nothofagus gunnii), which has its own Festival in autumn when the leaves turn from green to yellow to deep red, making a spectacular sight. Angie explained how the 65km track is normally walked in about 6 days, staying overnight in comfortable huts that were extensively refurbished during Covid. However, walkers need to be fully prepared for extreme conditions at any time of year. We thank Angie for an excellent presentation. Peter Storer

FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT THE SCHUB Lessons from Birds Our local birds start the morning in joy, even if they are searching for food, no easy job in this dry. Each species comes together in its own patch, without chasing each other, feeding in the trees, shrubs and grasses of the back yard. The young, even the lorikeets and magpies, are gentle, trusting, accepted by those their parents chase away, those you would think might despise them. Some, like the King Parrots and Cockatoos, will have their fill then call others to share the bounty. It’s wonderful to see how they can share space and food with each other. They make the best of what they have.

Many organisations and individuals provide opportunities for us to do this. Each Friday Afternoon, starting at 2ish, an informal group of diverse people gather to share life’s joys and to help others. Everyone is welcome. On Friday 24 November, after Cuppa and a Chat, the Good Stuff Ideas Forum led by Jenni will discuss Silence. There will be singing and intellectual stimulation. LOCAL NEWS LOOK OUT FOR THESE SIGNS AT CHRISTMAS ON MAIN STREET Our local churches have come together to assist with volunteers for the event. These ‘ASK ME’ signs will be bobbing around the street to help you locate the activities you’re looking for, including times for musicians and even when Santa might arrive! A big thank you to the congregations of Samford Anglican Church, Samford Valley Community Church and Nexus Samford.

PARK AND WALK Parking on and near Main Street will be very difficult. You can park and walk from these locations: St Pauls Anglican Church grounds on Mt Samson Road, Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Camp Mountain Road, or Samford Valley Community Church on Mt Glorious Road.

As the Christmas Season approaches, things get busy. Booking an end of year function becomes problematic unless you get in early. Just how late can you leave Christmas shopping without panicking? And then there’s the Christmas Markets everywhere. Special arrangements begin to crop up. From 24 December 23 until 11 February 24, we have only one Sunday Service and that is at 8am. Christmas Service times are listed in the advertisement below. Our Annual General Meeting will take place after the 8am service on 11 February. From the following week we will go back to having two regular services each Sunday. Once again, Samford Churches Together (Nexus Church, Samford Community Church and St Paul’s Anglican Church) will assist in making it a little easier to navigate Christmas on Main Street on 2nd December. (See article on the left for details). Volunteers from each of the churches will be available to help you find the attractions

you’re looking for. Just look for the “Ask Me” signs and the friendly smile. 2024 is our centenary year. The first Anglican service in Samford took place on 31 January 1923 and the first service in the new church building (our current church hall) took place in August 1924. These events will bracket our centenary festivities. Regular Sunday Services: 7:30am and 9am. (From 24 December – 11 February: one service only at 8am.) Motorcycle ride group gathers at Long Yard larder on the first Saturday of the month for an 8:30am or 9am departure. Destinations vary and riders of all experience levels are welcome. SPYs – St Paul’s Youth: 3rd Friday of the month, 6pm-9pm for an evening which always includes food and a craft activity. Samford Valley Markets: 2nd Saturday of the month, 7am – Midday. (December Twilight Markets from 3-7pm) All Things Nice: Mondays, 9am – midday. Parish hall and at the Markets. Robert Paget Priest in Charge

OUT & ABOUT Samford Support Network Working together to help local community members The Samford Support Network believes strongly in Community Supporting Community and we would like to acknowledge some of the great collaborations we share as a thank you to all. We rely on the generosity of our local benefactors and hope we give back to the Samford community in many ways. We were recently the recipients of a generous donation from the Samford CWA, a group of lovely ladies who work tirelessly in the community themselves. Clients of the Samford Support Network had a delicious Morning Tea recently, during which we celebrated a birthday. The magnificent cake was provided to the client by the Samford Patisserie, a longtime supporter of the Samford Support Network, suppliers of delicious food for several events. On Saturday at the Samford Valley Markets, our representatives were the appreciative recipients of a wonderful donation from the local talented theatre group, Spadewerx, for which we are very grateful. (See photo Page 5)

Page 32 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 24 NOVEMBER 2023

The donations from the Drakes Samford tags mount up and we have been able to cater several events with these funds. Donations via Containers for Change also continue to accumulate. Every dollar counts! The next important event in our calendar is our Glow Products stall at Christmas on Main Street on 2nd December. This is our major annual fundraising event and we hope to see many of you coming by to visit us! In other news, on Wednesday December 6 at 6.30pm, we will hold our AGM at the SCHUB to decide upon the Management Committee for 2024. All 5 committee positions are open to election. Members only to attend please.

EXCITING NEWS Community Library Samford Inc. has updated A brand new name was chosen some months ago, and there were a number of items to be addressed before the official notification was received. As of 31st October 2023, CLS officially became BindersKeepers Inc. There are yet many changeovers to be made, however the most important change is the website address. The new address is https://binderskeepers.com.au. General

enquiries are to be addressed to info@ binderskeepers.com.au, although at this stage info@communitylibrarysamford.org remains operational. The logo is now also due to be updated. Many thanks to all those local and outside groups who provided letters of support to help with a COMB application. A grant application was also recently submitted to replace all the wooden book cases and metal shelving damaged in February 2022 floods. The library has also recently received some more fabulous donations in the Fantasy, Children’s and Art categories. The library now holds a substantial collection of Sarah Douglass (Australian author), Raymond Feist, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, Robin Hobb, Stephen Donaldson amongst other well known Fantasy authors. Following a two hour washing session, all frames, shelves and shelf ends are now all spic and span (to the best of volunteer ability in allowing for rust). All children’s books are expected to be back on shelves before Christmas. A trailer outing to Bunnings Keperra supplying children’s books, toys, puzzles and games for all ages, plus adult fiction books, is planned for mid-December. Until then, Happy Reading.

OUT & ABOUT Samford Golden Valley Pony Club A lot of exciting changes and new ideas have been welcomed in 2023 and the Samford Golden Valley Pony Club has been fortunate enough to have had a great group of volunteer parents and riders steering it in this fabulous direction. The club has also been very lucky to have more volunteer instructors on board this year to call upon, to help out at musters and some well needed grants to continually improve and repair the grounds. The club is continually evolving and is becoming a great training and competing space for all local riders. The cross country course upgrade and completion has seen a good few competitions held throughout the year, along with specialised training clinics for our members to have available to them. The facility upgrade has meant the grounds can be hired and also utilised by other local clubs and schools, along with horse events and educational days. The polo fields have been so advantageous to riders at muster and for competitions to have more space and some much needed shade and seating to utilise. After the recent well needed rain, the grounds look great for a Xmas break, but are still able to be used by all members over this period. If you are ever considering joining as a family, or adult rider, memberships for 2024 will be available online in the new year, so please see website and join the Facebook group for up to date information.

Samford Rangers won by 1 run with 2 balls to spare. Tiger Lawson Award: 3 Julian Heap, 2 Connor Gleeson, 1 Matt Bradley. Highvale was looking its absolute greenest after recent rain and both teams were keen to walk away with a win and a place in the final, or one step closer at least. Confident with bowling first, Rangers won the toss and sent the Village People in to bat to face the music. Proving that decision was the correct one, Rangers struck early in the first over with a second ball wicket to Julian Heap and another shortly after with some beautiful opening bowling, putting SVP on the back foot with some work to do. Samford Village People needed a leader and skipper. Matt Bradley steadied the ship with support from middle order batters, Connor Gleeson and Breeze Ligthart. Some late quick wickets brought the opening innings to a close and SVP walked off with 152, knowing they were 30ish runs too short. The Rangers run chase took an early 3rd ball casualty with a corker delivery from Matt Bradley, who was keen to take up where he left off with the bat. With ball in hand, SVP were able to keep the run rate down and defend their small run total, but Rangers were biding their time, and their patience was well calculated. With quality and experienced heads batting through the order, Rangers kept the wheels turning with low-risk batting, with classy innings from Toby Boys, Martin Willemse, Michael Draper, and Gavin Bannerman, albeit wickets in hand and balls were beginning to tighten. Julian Heap again showed he is the go-to guy under pressure with a solid innings with the bat, making it

a man of the match winning performance when combined with his bowling figures and efforts in the field. The bowlers were left to finish the day with 11 runs required from the final two overs and SVP starting to believe they had a chance. After 9 runs from the penultimate over (due mostly to sundries) Rangers could see the final in sight. The final over had it all, with 1 to tie, and 2 to win. Ball #1 was a single from an edge down to third man. Ball #2 was another wicket to Matt Bradley…it was getting tense. Rangers’ energizer bunny Jeremy Trost came out with one thing on his mind...HIT AND RUN… Ball #3 of the final over was bowled – a short, straight bunt later and ‘RUN’ was the call. Village People fielders had a shy at the stumps which missed by a coat of paint and Rangers were home, and into the final of the 2023 Chronicle Cup. Chris Neill (Samford Village People)
