VILLAGE PUMP UPDATES NBN ADVOCACY GROUP UPDATE With the Federal Election done, dusted and decided, the Samford & Districts NBN Advocacy Group is now moving into the next phase of our advocacy for better broadband across 4520. Firstly, we’d like to congratulate Peter Dutton on retaining the seat of Dickson and becoming the new Opposition Leader. We hope he will strongly support all initiatives and outcomes that improve the communications landscape for 4520 residents over the electoral term. Secondly, we’d like to congratulate the Albanese Labor Government and the newly appointed Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland MP, and look forward to any changes the new leadership can bring to the 4520 region. The focus of the next phase of our advocacy is specifically around suburbs allocated to satellite, namely: Cedar Creek, Clear Mountain, Mt Nebo, Mt Glorious, Samsonvale & Kobble Creek. For residents in these areas allocated to NBN’s SkyMuster, please look at your site’s suitability for adoption of the Starlink service. It may provide a far superior internet option over the next couple of years while we work toward fibre-based solutions. The fibre-based rollout to 2000 premises across Highvale, Wights Mountain, Camp Mountain and Samford Valley is now complete and residents have been connecting to their preferred provider. Some residents have experienced issues ranging from blown electrical circuits, to poles down, to processing orders with service providers. The February and May rain events caused electrical poles to fall, also bringing communications lines down and water to enter NBN pits which were dug close to or on top of electrical circuits on residential properties. The Advocacy

LOCAL NEWS A SPECIAL RESCUE FROM SAMFORD BUILDING SITE Here’s a good news story for one of our Samford Village native inhabitants. A few weeks back, a workman on the Metricon housing construction site on Cash Avenue North, Samford, was doing a site clean and noticed a slight movement in the rubble. He quickly jumped out of his excavator and as he cleared away the materials, to his surprise he found a small echidna huddling for safety. With quick thinking, he gently scooped under the echidna, capturing enough of the soil base to ensure no damage was incurred. Across from the building site is the Samford Scout Group, which sits alongside bushland and then the Samford Creek. The bushland and creek side areas are currently being regenerated by Samford Landcare for the benefit of the community – humans and native animals alike! The echidna was gently
by local Landcare volunteers who kept a protective eye on him for a day, until he felt confident enough to set off on the hunt for a more suitable place to forage for food and to find a new home. The sighting of echidnas in the Samford Valley is not common, as they often hide under vegetation and shelter in hollow logs, rock crevices and in burrows. Also amazingly, echidnas are good swimmers and they’ve been seen crossing waterways with their snouts in the air like snorkels. Samford Landcare’s next phase of the Cash Avenue regeneration project is on 2000m2 of land area, where we need to remove the existing weed plant and grass cover, to replace with native plants. These will seek to provide future homes for Ernie the echidna and other Australian native animals. David Reed
placed in this area and promptly began to burrow into the earth. He was named Ernie
FEARLESS FERNY FIGHTERS Last month we let you know about a group of students and teachers from Ferny Grove State High School, taking part in the Leukemia Foundation, World’s Greatest Shave initiative. The school got back in touch to let us know all about how they celebrated humanity and the power of community. The Student Representative Council (SRC) students organised an event that centred around the World’s Greatest Shave, with seven students, one Teacher and a Teacher Aide bravely shaving their heads, to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by people with blood cancer. Students cheered on the shavers, laughed at the Year 12 leg waxes, purchased a
sausage from Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, munched on a cupcake - some also coloured their hair, all while chatting with the community groups who attended. These included: Child Cancer Support Group, PCYC Hills District, 1st Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery and the Deadly Choices
team from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community health services. In taking part in the day’s event and through generous community donations, the ‘Fearless Ferny Fighter’ team raised over $8000 for the Leukemia Foundation. What an awesome effort – congratulations!

NEW TRAIL DATES ANNOUNCED The sun has returned to Samford, the ground is drying up, and we are so pleased to be able to announce the new dates for the Edible Garden Trail for 2022 Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August. Ticket holders will be notified accordingly, and there may be some opportunity to still purchase tickets if you missed out in the earlier round. Please stay connected to updates through our website or social media pages. Did you know Samford has an Edible Exchange? Established only a few months ago, the exchange has been a hive of activity ever since. The way it works is that you drop off excess produce from your own garden, and in exchange you can pick up produce that you may need. It is a wonderful initiative that has turned a simple idea into a way to encourage all of us to grow food in our backyards, share it with our neighbours and in the process, foster community spirit. The SEGT team visited the exchange back in May and posted up the video – check it out on our Facebook page. Image: Anna Fawcus

A NEW CHAPTER OPENS The Baffies Oan story I have Ann Patchett to thank for pushing me to make a long held dream a reality. Not personally of course, her collection of essays, These Precious Days. Her bookstore, Parnassus, has become a community hub providing employment to book lovers, a space to talk about and recommend much loved books, a support for local and aspiring authors, and a fun place to encourage young readers. That was my dream and a vacant space in the cottage in The Lifestyle Centre was calling me to action. Nestled in the beautiful Samford Valley amongst plants, chicken, yarn, gifts and great food and coffee, you can now find a book haven where you can sit by the fire, baffies oan, and peruse anything from the latest releases to your favourite classics. So, what does Baffies Oan mean? Quite literally, slippers on. It is a nod to my Scottish heritage and the desire to promote a slower approach to life. The bookstore aims to create a warm and inviting atmosphere where you can take your time to find the right book for you. There are comfy chairs, a large table to sit and write at if you feel the urge, and helpful staff to help you find your next story.
SUNDAY BOOK CLUB We will be starting a Sunday Book Club on 31 July and the last Sunday of every month from then, meeting at 3pm in store. July’s reading will be a beautiful collection of short stories by a debut Brisbane author, Fiona Robertson. We invite you to join us. Time to put your Baffies Oan and relax. Fiona Taylor

Samford Area Mens Shed Jay Richters | Together We Care Systemic problems in Australia’s Aged Care sector have been a social issue for longer than is acceptable. These problems prompted former airline cabin manager, Jay Richters, to found Together We Care, providing community services for mature Australians. After completing community aging and care sector training and gaining industry experience, Jay realised he needed to start his own business to provide the level of personal care clients wanted. Together We Care provides services to NDIS and to those aged over 65. Their passionate team of support workers hail from different industries, with Jay hiring on a person’s care and empathy as well as their past skills. Why did you start Together We Care? After working for multiple national companies and even starting a care office in Brisbane, I had enough of the lack of care that was being delivered by these organisations. They seemed to be more interested in what they could get out of the client instead of what they could do to support them. I decided to go out on my own and start a care business that wasn’t about business but all about real care. How is Together We Care different from traditional home care organisations? Home care is a very intimate thing. Imagine you need care and then have all these strangers coming into your home to provide you with essential care services. You should feel comfortable and know, like and trust the people that are caring for you - and that is Together We Care’s difference.
We like to match the same 2-3 workers so that clients can build a strong relationship where both client and worker flourish. No more having random strangers coming into your home to provide services. What feedback have you received from local families you work with? The feedback we get from the local community here and around Samford is incredible. Honestly, we become part of the family and nothing is too much trouble. There have been instances where a client has fallen over on the weekend and emergency services were not able to respond as quickly as we could. Within a few moments, we were there to help the client back on their feet and ensure that the family is supported and cared for as well.
Together We Care is an innovative community services organisation focused on the unique needs of those who need in home support for both aged and disability. We provide a diverse range of services to support our clients to live their best lives.

With all the calamitous events happening in the world today, wouldn’t it be nice if the world could just stop and go back the way things were? As much as we’d like certain things to remain the same, change is as inevitable as the sun rising in the morning and descending in the evening. Yet at the same time, there are changes that we embrace with happiness and enthusiasm because those changes bring joy, happiness and new horizons to look forward to and new environments to explore. At Samford Area Men’s Shed (we call it “SAMS”) change has certainly had its good times and its bad times. SAMS started off with just one smaller shed and a few dedicated men - and has changed, grown and evolved into what it is today. Along the way SAMS has gained new members and lost members as they have either moved on to other places or passed from this life. On Wednesday 15th June, we bade farewell to one of our esteemed members: Dennis Arnold. Dennis and his wife Jan Blok were guests of honour at a delicious barbeque put on by the men of SAMS. Dennis and Jan are heading off to live in Dalmeny, on the south coast of New South Wales. Dennis has always been well respected and valued for his involvement in SAMS activities for many years, particularly for the creative artwork that he has produced.

MUSEUM UPDATE Samford Museum Weather events are always topics of conversation and in recent months there has certainly been a variety. Firstly, rain and more rain bringing floods and very, very soggy ground even on hill tops. Concrete pathways started growing mould and moss. More recently the earth moved and every corner of our district has been touched by winter. Looking through the Significant Climatic Events timeline in Track and Times (published by Pine Rivers Shire Council 1988) floods, rain, cyclones and hail dominate the events between 1839 and 1988, followed by drought, bushfires, heat waves, snow or sleet - and even earthquakes are mentioned. Childhood memories of windy days: “We would go down the side of the hill where the grass was tall and rank. We stomped down some and sat on it. That left standing grass that sheltered us. Those tall thin gum trees would bend right down, a wonder they never broke. We loved those days.” Stories abound of young farming family members bringing in the cows on winter
mornings, standing on the warm ground where cows had spent the night to warm their feet. Not unheard of either are severe frosts and water taps freezing. Ladies filling tomorrow’s washing copper with water the evening before finding a layer of ice across the top next morning. Several recollections of an earth tremor registering 1-2 on the seismic station graph at Mt Nebo in either 1959 or 1960 are mentioned in Samford Reminiscences Vol5. In 1997 Mrs Joyce Ward of Mt Glorious wrote: “To one who has recorded phenomena for the Bureau of Meteorology for many years, climate change cannot be ignored. The duration of fogs and mists once was days or even weeks, rainfall annually a constant 80 to 90 ins. A gradual reduction in rainfall has occurred where one year records 38 ins another 58. Periods of dryness have lengthened, whether due to greenhouse effect or a cycle only time will tell, because weather records are limited.” For more local history visit Samford Museum, Station Street, Samford Village. Visitors welcome Wednesdays and Sundays -- 10am to 4pm. $5 adults $1 children. Prior notice of research requiring assistance would be appreciated.

Samford Stags Your Local Rugby League Club
Great to finally put the rain behind us and have all our junior and senior teams training and playing Rugby League again. Last couple of weeks has seen our teams play away and at home, and last weekend we hosted our first Opens double header of the season. We had a fantastic turn out for the club and both games did not disappoint. Our MKN Open Men’s Div 3 team played first, beating Northlakes 28 – 22, keeping them at the top end of the ladder. This game was followed by our MKN Open Men’s Div 2 team, which defeated Burpengary Jets 44 - 14. This game was also Sam Thaiday’s first home game of the season. Great to see Sammy on home turf in the green and gold. He was well received by all and helped the boys to their solid win. Big thank you to our local community for the great turn out on the day, certainly was a top level atmosphere. It has also been a good start to the season for our other competitive teams with the Under 17s achieving four wins from 5 games, and the Under 14s and 13s, scoring three wins from 5 games. OUT & ABOUT
Intriguing Native Orchids The CWA Hall was jam packed at our June meeting to hear Roman Busianczuk detail the life cycles of the epiphytic native orchids of Mt Glorious, which include 5 species of Dendrobium and two Bulbophyllum. However, first he explained that orchids originated in Australia (as did songbirds, but that’s another story) in the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago, but most were wiped out in the K-Pg extinction event. Since then, one genus of orchids has evolved to become our 5 modern families. Different species of epiphytic orchids live at different heights in the canopy depending on the level of sunlight, air movement and availability of water. Each species requires
a stable substrate (bark, usually of a particular tree), a bryophyte (moss) and fungal mycelia to germinate and survive. These orchids produce millions of tiny air-dispersed seeds to increase the chance that just a few will reach a site with these very narrow optimal conditions. We thank Roman for a wonderful insight into this little-known world, high in our rainforest canopy. Unfortunately, the designated speaker for our next meeting, to be held on Tuesday 5 July in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start, pulled out for personal reasons on the day of the Village Pump deadline, so we weren’t able to organise a replacement in time for this article.
If you’d like to find out the topic we’ll be covering, please email samford@npq. org.au and we’ll add you to our monthly mailing list. Otherwise, just turn up at the meeting for a pleasant surprise! We encourage attendees to bring along native plant specimens or examples of weeds for our ‘show and tell’ segment. We serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle after the presentation. We are also planning to run some Branch excursions, including visits to local native gardens and other areas of botanical interest, which members of the community are welcome to attend. Peter Storer
Invitation to ‘Suss Out’ at the Larder The Samford Sustainable Business Network invites all businesses in Samford to its “Suss Out Event” on Tuesday 19 July at the Long Yard Larder. No - it’s not a suspicious event, more an event to ‘suss out’ what local businesses are doing to act sustainably.

We’re using the AMA (Ask Me Anything) process which is essentially where some of our businesses have been asked to give a 4-minute run down on what they are doing to have a go at being sustainable, while the rest of us ask them anything about their business, or indeed anything at all about themselves. That’s when things could indeed go a bit sus - that is, a bit questionable! Good fun will be had by all. To add to the event, we have a young, local vocalist coming along to provide some entertainment. It will be standing room only at the Larder and the first coffees are on the house care of Green Street, with great food from the Larder available for purchase from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Join us anytime from 5.30pm. RSVP by 16 July to info@greenstreet.net.au or text 0407 190 162. Howard Nielsen

OUT & ABOUT
Samford Bowls Club The bowls club has been humming with so much bowling and activity going on it’s hard to imagine members having time for any other commitments. Lucky that we are known as the ‘Friendly Club’ as we enjoy seeing each other a number of times a week. 4th June Volunteer Appreciation Day / Rapid Fire Pairs Sponsored by ASCF, Australian Secure Capital Fund Ltd. Their representative, Joe Bennet came along to play as well as be generous with prize money. At the end of play we were delighted with a tab at the bar thanks to Joe. Our members volunteer for most of the roles and the work required to keep a club like ours functioning. Chairman, Barry Maher presented Alan Wells from the Samford Rural Fire Brigade with a Certificate of Appreciation for their assistance to our club. Mary Cichowski again showed why she is in charge of the kitchen with her super BBQ lunch. 7th June Bring a Buddy Day Always great fun to have some new players at our ‘Have a go at Lawn Bowls’ day. Some first timers and others who were experienced enough to go into teams came along. Lots of laughs as bowls go everywhere but right beside the jack! By the end of the morning, they were getting the feel of the game and realizing that it might take a few more visits to master. The morning was sponsored by Samford Grove Retirement Village and Desley Arnold had us all thinking we would enjoy living at the Grove with her friendly chat. 11th June Combined Presidents and Patron’s Day Sponsored by Denture Square Brisbane. A beautiful sunny winters day and after a delicious meal prepared by our ladies we took to the greens. This is a day to say thank you to our ladies and men’s representatives Desley Broad and Jeff Himstedt for the work they do on our behalf. Our very popular Patron Mac Patterson provided some wine labeled with the club logo to enjoy with lunch and after the game. Some lucky players even got to win a bottle to take home. UPCOMING EVENTS 31st July Paint N Sip! Check out the Samford Bowls Club Facebook Page for more information and booking. 22nd August Fashion Parade. Spring

GET INVOLVED Rangers Turn 50 in 2023! Next year Samford Rangers FC will celebrate its 50th Anniversary year, and the club is planning a number of things to mark this important milestone. From our humble beginnings in 1973, when the Brown family donated a paddock in Wights Mountain which was turned into a sports field, Rangers has grown to now have more than 800 registered players and 60+ teams. It has played an important part in the Samford community and no doubt many members of the community have been involved with Rangers in some way over the years. We are very interested to hear from anyone who has old photos of the club (like the one pictured above) that they are willing to share with us, or has an interesting story or anecdote that we can document. If you have something to share, please contact pres@samfordrangers.org.au.
Samford Garage Renews Sponsorship Samford Garage is continuing its long association with Samford RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association), renewing its annual sponsorship of the RDA centre based at the showgrounds last month.
Page 12 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 24 JUNE 2022
This welcome financial commitment from Samford Garage supports the RDA program, which assists children and adults with a wide range of disabilities. In recent months, Dividing Line Fencing, Community Bank Samford (Bendigo Bank), and Federal Member Peter Dutton have all renewed their annual centre or horse sponsorships. Samford RDA is also grateful for a financial boost provided through the Brisbane Racing Club’s 50:50 Charity Raffle at the recent Doomben 10,000 Race Day. This great initiative raised more than $4,500 (or half the raffle money collected on the day, less commission). The outstanding result is thanks to a team of dedicated Samford RDA volunteers (some of them pictured) who gave up a Saturday to sell raffle tickets to racegoers and promote the work of RDA.

OUT & ABOUT In a matter of hours a couple of weekends ago, a small team of dedicated volunteers moved the 350 cartons of books that have been in storage at Cedar Creek Public Hall to a large private shed. Thank you to the two wonderful Samford residents who worked so hard on solving the book storage issue and found another temporary home for these books. Your help is very much appreciated. A proposal for a more permanent home where the books will finally once again become accessible to the general public for borrowing is currently in progress. In the meantime, fund raising continues. The very first Books 4 Sale from the new Library trailer is proposed for the RSL Samford car park on Saturday 28th June from 9:30am through to 2:30pm. Watch for street signage and updates on the Community Library Samford fb page and Samford Valley Community Noticeboard. Many thanks to the RSL Samford for helping out in providing space to park the trailer. Dates are also currently being organised with Drakes Samford for the school holidays again with Puzzles and Games for sale from 9:30am through to 12:30pm. Proposed days are Wednesdays and Fridays. Updates will also be posted on local Facebook groups and in future editions of this newspaper. The Management Team

Creativity Changes the World Arthur C Clarke, one of the big three early Sci Fi writers, wrote in 1945 about the use of satellites for communication. An Albert Camus novel introduced the theory of existentialism in 1942. Pablo Picasso in 1937 finished Guernica, which showed that innocence can never be reclaimed after a war. What have these got to do with the Friday 24th June’s Good Stuff Ideas Forum at 3.30pm at the SCHUB? The topic, to tie in with the Creative Samford’s Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail, is Creativity. What is it? How does it impact the way we live? Does being creative make us more aware of the world around us? If you love discussing ideas or listening to others discuss ideas, please join us. Everyone is welcome. Our usual cuppa and a chat will start at 2pm. If you like to keep your hands busy as well as your minds, the materials from Crafting Kindness will be available for you to create little surprises for folk who might appreciate something to brighten their day. DETAIL will gather again on July 8 at 3.30pm. CRAFTING KINDNESS will have its next official workshop on July 15. Each Friday, Cuppa and Chat starts at 2pm at the SCHUB.

Cedar Creek Public Hall News June has been a special month for the Hall and continues to be so. The return of the ‘Welcome to Winter Soup Day’ was a great success. The weather cooperated, people turned up with their families and friends and there was enough soups and desserts to go around. Thank you to those in the community who donated, including Alastair and Ash McLeod from Al’freshCo, as well as Little Tree Bake & Brew House.
Checked in with the Rural Fire Brigade as the day started off pretty windy and the braziers were an important part of creating the ‘warm’ atmosphere – the go ahead was given! Musical entertainment was provided by Bill Turner, Ian Wright together with his bass guitarist and Michael McGreever, our local ‘up the road’ musician – the musicians give the Hall their time and passion, it makes all the difference – many thanks! Together with the undercroft of the Hall and the grassy forecourt, everyone had options to be where they felt most comfortable. It was certainly a day to be proud of - the community and the Hall management coming together and enjoying themselves. If you came along – thanks for helping to make it a special day. Coming up: TGIF (Thank Goodness Its Friday). It’s slightly earlier this month, still on the last Friday – 24th June – from 5pm to 7pm. We’re testing the waters a little by adding a few extras to the menu. As usual, there is the sausage sizzle, however also some hamburgers and jacket potatoes. You might be lucky with a few desserts too. Soft drinks will be available. The undercroft of the Hall will be open and the brazier will be lit outside. Games for the kids and music too. Come along and join us. Bring your own picnic supplements to make the TGIF a good fit for your family. Looking forward to seeing you. Lotty
GET INVOLVED 107 Army Cadet Unit Training Day
Officer Commanding
107 Army Cadet Unit (ACU) spent a weekend recently at the Enoggera Army Base building new skills in marksmanship at the range, followed by instruction and run through of the obstacle course. Both activities called for teamwork and skills, which they picked up well. The Battalion also ran a promotion course last month, where several cadets attended and excelled. Well done to all cadets who participated in these activities. During the next holiday period, several cadets are going on different courses, from promotional courses at Canungra to Cyber courses. We’re looking forward to hearing how they all go. Samford’s 107 ACU parades from 6pm to 8:30pm every Monday at the SCHUB, excluding holidays. If you are interested in joining, please contact the Officer Commanding by email: 107ACU@ armycadets.gov.au. QCWA Samford Pineapple Lunch anyone? After our meeting in our lovely new kitchen complete with door, the hall was full of lunchtime aromas of pineapple slice, mini pizzas, pineapple fruit salad, pineapple iced biscuits, coconut and upside-down pineapple cake to celebrate our food study of the versatile pineapple. It was great to share lunch with everyone.
Nominate now! Our Annual General Meeting will be held Monday 18 July and we welcome nominations from members for the voluntary position of Secretary of Samford QCWA. Our current secretary, the lovely Lilah, is putting away her keyboard (but not her apron). Lilah has been an asset as Secretary completing two full terms and we acknowledge her efforts. Thank you! Lilah’s wonderful work for Country Women Association continues through her constant
presence through always ‘being there’ – not to mention her excellent baking and her Country Kitchen informing. This month’s message by Lilah of food safety and hygiene when handling raw and cooked ingredients is a great reminder for our Ekka volunteers and our catering/baking duties. We love new information and welcoming visitors and guest speakers, including our very own member Annette, who shared her story of emigration to Australia from the UK in 1954. It was heart-warming to hear how her parents, after making the huge decision to ‘get to somewhere warmer’ as per doctor instructions for Annette’s health, never looked back. Members reflected on why we live where we live and also our connection with the UK as we also acknowledged our Queen, wishing her a well and long life, this June jubilee. Any prospective members are most welcome to Samford Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association. We support Samford women and the wider community through friendship, activities and community engagement. QCWA Samford caters for small to medium group functions and other special occasions. Call Fiona: 0421 353 272. For Hall Hire, contact Estelle: 0414 890 094. Annual General Meeting Monday 18 July 10am: members, please bring a share plate. Next meeting: Wednesday 20 July 10am. Marnie

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT Road Project Updates The double up of recent weather events has certainly left their mark across Division 11, and the region, with regards to delays in projects and additional maintenance works required. Two major projects have been affected, but I am pleased to say that plans are being put in place to address these roads. Since the beginning of rehabilitation works on a section of Mt Samson Road, Armstrong Creek (between 282 to 384), the site has encountered a number of issues which have resulted in substantial delays. The consistent rain has caused significant difficulties in the construction of the new road pavement. Evidence of surface and ground water entering the road pavement has also resulted in additional lengthy delays. With the onset of colder weather, it is not practical to finalise the bitumen sealing of this section of Mt Samson Road. I have been advised that Council will continue to monitor the current work area, however the initial bitumen seal is holding up well to traffic and while some remedial measures may be required, the section of road will return to its original speed limit along with the installation of temporary line marking towards the end of June. Once the warmer weather starts to arrive, I will advise the community when the completion of the bitumen seal will take place. The intersection upgrade at the junction of Mt Samson Road/Kobble Creek Road/ Postmans Track has seen several design related issues which includes the guard rail at the north west corner impacting the line of sight for motorists. Council is currently investigating this issue. Until the best course of action is determined, I have been advised that the temporary speed limit will continue at the approaches and through this intersection. I appreciate that while this may not be ideal for residents taking this route every day, it is necessary to ensure the safety of everyone travelling along this section of Mt Samson Road. If you would like any further information on these projects, you can call Council’s customer service on 3205 0555 and speak with the project officer, or email me Darren. grimwade@moretonbay.qld.gov.au. NATIVE GARDENIA Whilst an advocate for growing all bush food plants, a large number of them only produce food that is palatable after processing and cooking as, for example, jam, sauce or chutney. This is not the case for the fruit of the native gardenia (Atractocarpus fitzalanii), that may be enjoyed raw on their own, or in salads or cooked in tarts and other desserts. An alternative name for this plant is the yellow mangosteen since the round fruit is the same size (4 – 7cm diameter) and flavour of its Asian counterpart. The native gardenia is indigenous to coastal forests and beaches from far North Queensland to Mackay and is a hardy dry rainforest species that grows well in subtropical regions out of its natural range. This large shrub or small tree is a beautiful addition to a garden as a specimen or screen plant. It has large, ovate and dark glossy

green leaves although the new growth is a wonderfully contrasting lime green. Between September and November, the plant is covered in small (2.5cm) starshaped white flowers that have the intense fragrance of gardenias. These are followed by round, green fruit that gradually turn orange-brown as they ripen between April and June. Removal of the hard outer coating reveals the pale segments of soft and sweet fruit with white seeds. Native gardenia is best suited to a shady position in the garden, however once established they will tolerate both full sun and part shade and are very hardy. This is achieved by ensuring that the young plants are protected from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds using tree guards. It requires a well-drained soil (tolerating sandy conditions) but does need warmth and moisture. Mulching around plants in spring and watering in dry periods provides the required conditions. With its lush, evergreen and bushy foliage, the native gardenia is an attractive plant grown in a pot for an outdoor patio or in well-lit indoor spaces. The plant can be pruned to maintain its size and shape, making it a good candidate for hedging. In addition to human enjoyment, the native gardenia is a good wildlife species. In spring, when the flowers open in the afternoon, moths visit them for their nectar as do bees and other insects. In winter, birds feast on the fruit. GET INVOLVED Samford and Moreton CAN! What would you think is the most important aspect of living in the Moreton Bay region for most people? Cost of living? Safety and security? Access to vital services? Availability of recreational activities? As a Moreton Bay resident for 15 years, and the bloke from Translink who met with Samford locals to work out a way to implement the 399 bus service to Ferny Grove station, I know that Samford folk have a tenacious interest in improving the wellbeing of the area. I was, however, a little surprised, but pleasantly so, that a recent Moreton Bay Regional Council survey showed that residents’ top concern is ensuring our natural environment remains unspoiled. A massive 90% of all respondents stated that Council’s role in preserving the natural beauty of the region is “very important” or “extremely important”. This made me think more about what we should be doing in our own area as the climate changes. Reports from both
Commonwealth and State governments have identified SEQ as particularly vulnerable to more, severer droughts, bushfires and floods. These would affect not just our families but also those who are expected to settle in our area. I’m not the only one who’s concerned. Late last year the Moreton Climate Action Now campaign was kicked off to encourage Council to progress what it has started, to address the threat of climate change to our region. Since then, MoretonCAN has gained support from individuals, groups and businesses who are interested in ensuring the beauty and diversity that characterise the local area are protected for future generations, ensuring that the region thrives as a livable, sustainable environment for everyone. From gardens to gum trees, lifestyles to lizards, and trash to turtles, MoretonCAN’s supporters are working to encourage and help Council urgently to do more to mitigate the impacts of climate change on more than 800 species of native animals, on the native vegetation that covers more than half of the region, on the 9,000 hectares of internationally significant wetlands – and on our families and all we cherish. There are a
number of ways we are doing this through our engagement with Council’s officers and Councillors, helping with contributing to the policies that Council is developing. At the personal level too, we meet with local folk to exchange ideas. You can catch up for a friendly chat at one of MoretonCAN’s Sustainability Conversation Spots that pop up at local markets. You can discover more about the campaign on our web site www. moretoncan.net, Facebook (www.facebook. com/groups/614933456425228) and Twitter (twitter.com/MoretonCAN). LOCAL NEWS DICKSON NOTES A message from Peter I have hit the ground running since the election both locally and in my new role as Leader of the Opposition. It is a great privilege to be returned as your parliamentary representative here in Dickson. I am looking forward to working with you to keep delivering for our community and making it an even better place to live, work and raise a family. As Leader of the Liberal Party, I will work hard to hold the Government to account and to ensure the interests of every day Australians are put first and foremost. I want our country to support aspiration and to reward hard work. To take proper care of those Australians who short term, or long term, can’t take care of themselves. By the time of the next election in 2025, we will have presented a clear plan and laid out our own vision. Locally, there is a lot going on in our community and it is an exciting time in the Valley. There are many events coming up in the school holidays and we are getting towards the completion of new community projects here in Samford. Unfortunately, the Samford Show has been cancelled this year, but I would encourage you to support Dayboro Show on
2-3 July. Dayboro Show was not able to take place last year due to COVID lockdowns and this year’s show will be a boost to our broader region. If you’re heading away over the school holidays, I wish you a safe trip and hope you’re able to enjoy a nice break with family, friends and loved ones. Save the Date - Seniors Expo 2022 One of my initiatives after I was first elected in 2001 was to host a Dickson Seniors Expo. There was a lack of information for seniors in our community and I wanted to provide opportunities for seniors in the local community to access information, activities and services available. The Expo was such a success, with the help of the Dickson Seniors’ Council we have held the Dickson Seniors Expo. It is always a fun event and provides seniors an opportunity to meet local organisations and businesses working with seniors, see our range of stall holders and exhibits, live entertainment, guest speakers and much more. The Expo will be held at the South Pine Sports Complex, 620 South Pine Road, Brendale. entry is free. Organisations and businesses interested in holding a stall at the Expo can contact my office on 3205 9977 for booking information. DATE: Monday 22 August 2022.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT Chain Stitch for Charity A group of crochet-lovers picked up their hooks recently to create handmade rugs for domestic violence charity, RizeUp. Organised by Debbie Healey from That Yarn Place at the Lifestyle Centre in Samford Valley, the dedicated band of yarnafficionados had a ball making bright rugs to let those in difficult positions know that they are being thought of. That Yarn Place is a boutique yarn shop, supplying all types of artisan yarn and providing a place for likeminded creatives to join a community. “We started the shop 18 months ago and are thrilled with the support we have received. Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming space that offers beautiful yarns, advice and support to all yarners, and offer a place for yarners to gather, create and connect,” Debbie said. It was through social activities at That Yarm Place that the idea for crafting rugs for a domestic violence charity emerged. “Our community of yarn lovers and creators share our space during Yarn Circle, Social Sundays and any other time they care to drop by. Much time is spent sharing ideas and skills, supporting each other, enjoying
a cup of tea and also coming up with ideas on how to give. A member of our weekly Yarn Circle, Su, suggested this charity. We thought it was a perfect fit for us, helping women empower women,” Debbie said. “We put the call out to our community to make crochet squares that would then be put together to make the rugs. We were able to give about 25 rugs to RizeUp.” RizeUp’s programs promote women’s independence and decision-making to prevent domestic violence. The charity brings communities together and facilitates
volunteers to make practical contributions to affected families. Donated rugs went towards RizeUp’s Homes Program managed by Jodie Frisch. “Our Homes Program means that we pack everything from beds, linen, kitchen supplies, and our volunteers set up the home before a family moves in. Without these supplies, they would have nothing to move in with. These beautiful rugs have gone into several homes so far, to not only help keep them warm, but to show them that the community cares and thinks they are worthy,” Jodie said. “It’s always so heart-warming when people take the time to donate something that they have spent hours creating. Being able to then gift these to a family who has nothing is very special, I feel like it’s sharing a little bit of love from the community, along with the warmth and colour that they bring,” she said. “We rely on generous donations such as these, to be able to gift a family with all that they need to start their life free from violence. Every contribution is helping to create a new beginning.” Tanya Hall Photo L to R: Debbie Healey & Belinda Rollason (That Yarn Place) and Jodie Frisch (RizeUp).

RECIPE OF THE WEEK EGG-FREE LEMON BUTTER (or lime or passionfruit) INGREDIENTS 250g white sugar (have tried with raw sugar and the resulting colour is unappetising) 110g unsalted butter 6 tsp custard powder 3/4 cup either lemon juice, lime juice, or passionfruit pulp. Likely good with mandarin too. METHOD Melt butter, but don’t brown. Add everything else, mix well, bring to boil. Boil for 3 minutes. Turn off heat and immediately pour into sterilised jars with a metal, pop-up lid. Allow to cool at room temp. Multiply as you see fit. NB: custard power is best sifted, to avoid little dry lumps of it in the finished butter. Also, some custard powder contains gluten - just something to be aware of. This recipe is cheaper to make than those which use eggs and I’ve found the egg recipes need heaps of stirring to avoid pieces of cooked egg white appearing. BOOK REVIEWS THE MANNINGTREE WITCHES A.K. Blakeman I f y o u l o ve we l l - r e s e a r c h e d historical fiction, then Blakeman’s confronting work based on the West Essex witch trial of Rebecca West in 1643 is for you. Religious differences caused dissention among followers of the Church of England (the state‘s chosen church), the Catholics and the Calvinists who wanted a stripped down Christianity with equality for believers, except for women who were caste as responsible for original sin. A civil war was raging between the Roundheads (some of whom were Calvinists) agitating for constitutional monarchy and the Cavaliers who were wealthy Royalists. Most village men had been dragged into military service leaving their women to fend for themselves. Superstition, jealousy, distrust, a need for power and the insidious terror of eternal damnation drove many to target the different. Rebecca West - young, literate, discontented with her lot and in love with the local clerk, has a widowed midwife mother who is fond of drink, confrontation and an occasional roll in the hay. Rebecca has a way of inveigling herself into the right company, despite her mother’s
DAYBORO DAY 2008 It is unfortunate that the Dayboro Day Festival had to be cancelled for the third year in a row because of the COVID restrictions that have been in place. The first Dayboro Day Festival was held 30 years ago on 7th June 1992, the Sunday of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. There were no street closures at that time. In 1995 the Resident of the Year and Young Achiever Awards were introduced. Marj Barnett was named Resident of the Year and Timothy Reid was the Young Achiever. Marj, who is a spry 91 years of age, is still involved in the local community that she and her husband Verne moved to in 1980. Verne Barnett was named Resident of the Year in 1999. In 2001 the Business of the Year Award was introduced, with Gramma’s House receiving the initial award. Page 26 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 24 JUNE 2022
insistence on her involvement with those who struggle at the edge of society. Her scholarly crush, John Edes, befriends a stranger, Matthew Hopkins - dramatic, insubstantial, dressed in black, who becomes the Witchfinder General. When neighbourly bonds are frayed by hunger, fed by gossip, suggestion, and exaggeration, it takes little for a drunk’s tale of night horrors to be twisted and the different blamed for every bad thing that happens in the village. Hopkins steps forward, a group of eager inquisitors gather beside him, the townsfolk like the growing fanaticism. The Manningtree Witches is dark, sensuous, cruel, filled with fascinating characters, and bathed in language of arresting loveliness that often cuts to the bone. It has a strong message about how societies are sullied by social judgement and prejudice. Julie Martin
THE LAST WOMAN IN THE WORLD Inga Simpson The Last Woman in the World is born of the author, Inga Simpson’s own flight from her home during the recent NSW bush fires. It speaks to the horror, fear, grief and devastation felt by so many, all wrapped up in a page turning story of one woman’s choice to hide herself or venture out beyond her self-constructed protections to find or even provide help. Quite a number of Certificates for Outstanding Service to the Local Community have also been awarded to residents and former residents over the years. Carmel Bond
“It’s night, and the walls of Rachel’s home creak as they settle into the cover of darkness. Fear has led her to a reclusive life on the land, her only occasional contact with her sister. A hammering on the door. There stands a mother, Hannah, with a sick baby. They are running for their lives from a mysterious death sweeping the Australian countryside. Now Rachel must face her worst fears: should she take up the fight to help these strangers survive in a society she has rejected for so long?” The main character Rachel, inspired by Rachel Carson of Silent Spring fame, faces an unknown threat that is killing the people around her. Where has it come from? What causes it? Why do Rachel and the young mother seem to be safe from its ravages? Is it something humans have brought on themselves? Simpson’s usual beautiful nature-inspired writing is still present here in what is a stark departure from her usual genre, to present a thrilling tale of horror deeply rooted in her love for the natural environment. Is there hope for our future? I was on the edge of my seat. Fiona Taylor
