A MEMORIAL FOR A SPECIAL BOND On Friday 11 March, the Samford RSL Avenue of Honour (AoH) Committee were thrilled to finally open the newest edition to the AoH, the War Animal Memorial, representing stage 7 of this wonderful Samford landmark. It was fitting that, along with dignitaries including State President of RSL Qld, Major General Stephen Day DSC AM, Brisbane North District RSL President, Merv Brown OAM, Nikki Boyd MP, Mr Brett Hayes (representing Peter Dutton MP) and Councillors Darren Grimwade and Cath Tonks, we were surrounded by very special guests who were enjoying the fresh air and grass. There was Max the horse and his owner, Lance Corporal Kate Walters from 2/14 Light Horse regiment, Queensland Mounted Infantry; camels Penny and Vernon and their handlers Pte Cook, Pte Ryan-Toomey and Pte Rainbo all the way from 26 Transport Squadron at Amberley RAAF Base; as well as miniature ponies from Mini All-Stars Horsemanship and Dr Anja’s beautiful therapy dog Romeo. No doubt there were a few birds flying over as well, to round out the five animals recognised by the Australian War Memorial – the donkey/mule, camel, pigeon, horse and dog, underpinning the bond between animals and humans. Many may not know that over 16 million animals served in the first world war. The animals were invaluable for transportation, communication and companionship, which is why this stage 7 is so significant. In 2019, Australia joined with the United Kingdom, New Zealand and others in recognising war
animals with a National Day of Commemoration. Australia’s first national day for war animals was 24 February 2019. In 1914, large cavalry forces were used widely during the war. Horse and camel-mounted troops were used in the desert campaigns throughout the war and remained a critical part of the war effort. Horses, donkeys, mules and camels carried food, water, ammunition and medical supplies to men at the front, and dogs and pigeons also carried messages. Canaries were used to detect poisonous gas, and cats and dogs were trained to hunt rats in the trenches. In recent times, explosive detection dogs (EDD’s) have been employed in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan all with great success. “I can personally attest to lives being saved because of these dogs’ incredible intelligence, loyalty and senses. They are unwavering in a most dangerous duty,” said Mark Orreal, Avenue of Honour President. This war animal memorial is made of cast concrete with a stone finish and incorporates relief-carved bronze. The 20 columns
representing each of the Samford fallen are incorporated in the design. Five panels with four columns each with uplights will be in keeping with existing avenue lighting. “This memorial was designed and created by Mr Jamie Maclean. His exceptional talent, hard work and passion for what the Avenue of Honour represents speaks for itself,” said Mark. “It would not have been possible without the financial assistance of many including all levels of government, Council, the Community Bank Samford, the Samford & Districts Progress and Protection Association, RSL, and the Samford community - just to name a few.” Mark gave special mention to Cr Darren Grimwade, Wes Mortensen and the MBRC maintenance team who have gone over and above over many years to deliver this project. “I’m sure this memorial will serve as a great piece of education for the community, especially our young people,” said Cr Darren Grimwade.

LOCAL NEWS HOOKED ON NATIVE FISH If you sense something fishy is going on at Lake Samsonvale, you’d be right. The Pine Rivers Fish Management Association (PRFMA) is a voluntary, not-for-profit, community group, which recently completed this season’s fish stocking program at both Lake Samsonvale and Lake Kurwongbah. The Association’s stocking program runs from October to February each year in order to improve each lake as public recreational fisheries. Treasurer and Stocking Coordinator, Barry Tucker, said that a total of 101,000 Australian Bass; 40,000 Golden Perch; 13,000 Mary River Cod and 86 Saratoga were released into nearby Lake Samsonvale this season. Since 2007, the Association has released over 2million native fish fingerlings into Lake Samsonvale. “The fingerlings purchased and released are on average 50mm,” he said. He also noted that native fish such as Australian Bass and Golden Perch (Yellow Belly) do not breed in dammed impoundments such as Lake Samsonvale. In order to maintain native fish species, fingerlings need to be purchased from approved fish hatcheries on a regular basis. There are numerous environmental benefits of native fish restocking, including improved water quality, enhanced recreational fishing, noxious fish control and the conservation of native fish. Introducing fingerlings is also a cost effective way to control algae by boosting zooplankton numbers and controlling bait fish populations.
This season’s stocking program cost the Association just over $64,000. In order to fund this program, the PRFMA conducts a Vessel Permit Scheme to allow a limited number of tinnies, kayaks and canoes to operate on part of the lake. All funds from this scheme are allocated to fish stocking as well as ongoing operational and capital costs. Managed by volunteer members of the PRFMA, the Vessel Permit Scheme provides general passes to anyone who is at least 18 years of age for $120. Family permits are also available for 2 Adults & 2 juniors (12 to 15 years of age) at $160. For anyone keen to cast their rod, shore based fishing is available to members of the public at designated areas in Lake Samsonvale including Tukuwompa Park and McGavin View. A Stock Impoundment Permit Scheme is necessary to fish in the lake and can be purchased from the

OUR COMMUNITY RESPONDS “The silver lining in any crisis is the incredible support that pours in from people you’ve never met, and may never see again, but completely change your world in that moment,” said Tiffany Lippett, summing up so much of what this community witnessed across our streets and businesses over the last weekend in February. Local electrician Brad Choyce responded to an electrical emergency in Church St, Samford Village and the depth of the devastation soon sunk in. He made the call out for help and Tiffany, along with many other willing helpers, didn’t hesitate to respond to assist residents whose homes were inundated with flood waters.
“Extraordinary locals and others from far and wide, came prepared to do whatever was needed. So many amazing people who quietly came with home baked relief, paperwork skills for insurance, photograph recovery and salvage, as well as the mud army jobs we normally associate with flood volunteering,” said Tiffany. It was the same for Keagan Bizzell and Odelle Wolfenden at The Charge Movement on Mt Glorious Road. This was the second full flood they’d experienced since the gym opened. Water was rising very quickly and Keagan sent out an emergency message to members on the Friday asking for help.
“Within 10 minutes we had a few people there just in time to move all the heavy equipment upstairs. The flood happened so fast we couldn’t believe it. Within 20 minutes the water was at waist height. After Page 4 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 18 MARCH 2022
we had moved most of the gear upstairs, we stood back in disbelief. Sunday got even worse with the gym water rising to above shoulder height. Everything we had put up high was now under water.” The massive recovery effort included 20 people with gurneys, generators brooms and shovels, along with Heysen Dennis from Water Tank Rescue - pushing water and mud out not in! Sadly for Keagan and Odelle, they have made the heartbreaking decision to close the doors for good. “Running a small business has been tough over the last 2.5 years, but I’m so proud of the growth our community has made,” said Keagan. According to Steve Parry from Samford Weather Station, February 2022 had the highest monthly rainfall of 1019mm since 3 January 2006 when he first started operation. The rain which fell in Mount Glorious over the 4 days, exceeded the Australian record for maximum rainfall in 24hrs – 709mm. This is not surprising to Alice Star and Phil Garozzo from Loop Growers. Their biointensive market garden on Eatons Crossing Road, Draper, which supplies chemical free, closed-loop fruit and veg to many restaurants and caterers across Brisbane, was destroyed.
“It goes without saying perhaps, but what’s just transpired out at the farm is a climactic event of colossal proportions. The water levels we experienced were higher than anyone in the area has seen. Something so powerful that it defies explanation and really needed to be seen and felt to be believed,” said Alice. The fast-moving waters took their hardware for compost collection along with their seedling house and its contents. “All crops have now either failed or are rapidly being harvested from the ground to be distributed. We are on our knees looking up at an enormous recovery task where the outcome is uncertain and the direction still being coursed.” Alice’s sisters Jeannie and Billie Star have launched a Gofundme to help with the rebuild. www.gofundme.com/f/help-loopgrowers-farm-with-flood-recovery. For the residents of Mayfield Road, Cedar Creek, a significant landslide isolated them
in their homes for a number of days. “We hiked down via House Mountain, a 5.1km out and back trail, through our neighbour’s property into Honeywood Ct. We were fortunate enough to have a car parked on the other side of the floodwater and landslip blocking our way. We took hiking bags down to get groceries, then hiked back up the steep hill,” said Anna Beck. Concern for our vulnerable and isolated was also on the mind of many local community groups including Meals on Wheels Co-ordinators Tanja and Dee. “On the Friday as waters were starting to rise and roads were closing quickly, we checked for closures every 15 minutes, changing our volunteer delivery routes as necessary at the last minute. We delivered to everyone in the end, despite a couple of meetings on people’s driveways that were under water!” Clients were called to make sure they had enough food and were so very grateful. “Our volunteers were outstanding, quite soaked to the bone on their return, but all with smiles on their faces.” Samford Support Network directed people in immediate need to the Rural Fire Brigade. They also collected information from people who were offering donations or living space. “We need to be mindful that even though the waters have gone down, the damage or emotional impact is still there and support may still be needed,” said Barb Kienast. Please get in touch: ssn@ samfordsupportnetwork.com It’s a timely reminder for us all that as the sun returns, we know that the recovery for so many locally, across the wider Brisbane area and throughout northern NSW will take many many months, if not years – or never. Chris Roberts from 3D Logistics coordinated collections of essential goods, delivering them to Dave Carswell, DNV Transport at the Port of Brisbane, who then made a number of trips into Lismore and the Northern Rivers. Locals responded generously, including BCF Keperra, who Chris approached with a substantial budget to purchase gas cookers, stretcher beds, 30L drums and other essential equipment. On hearing about what Chris was doing, BCF offered a 60% discount. This is just an example of the immense support going on behind the scenes – too much to mention - but to each and every person, community group and business, we say thank you. Living in a community where we understand the importance of supporting each other and our local businesses who so often support the community, and have now been badly affected themselves, reminds us again to buy local, eat local, stay local maybe even hug a local!
THE FLOOD THAT WAS - FEBRUARY 2022 Samford Rural Fire Brigade SAMFORD RURAL FIRE BRIGADE CLEANS UP While the Samford and surrounds community will always be our priority 24/7 in fire prevention and protection, we will always help others when the opportunity arises. Unfortunately, the recent massive weather event gave us plenty of opportunity. The Samford Rural Fire Brigade (SRFB)
Samford Bowls Club I had just sent my regular item to the Village Pump and was thinking - if this rain keeps up, we will have to call off our Thursday night ‘Village Barefoot Bowls’. Well we did - and then Friday ladies Pennants, all Saturday’s games plus a large private social party with barefoot bowls booked for Saturday night - all cancelled. Members that could access the club were reporting that it looked like we might be okay. Sunday morning we thought we had made it - little did we know what was going to happen Sunday afternoon. Late on Sunday afternoon a member called a friend who lived nearby, to check if the flooding was impacting the club. From that simple conversation came an amazing community effort. The phones were ringing and all was arranged for members of the Samford Rural Fire Brigade (SRFB)
worked closely with our rural fire colleagues from Closeburn, Samsonvale, Dayboro, Clear Mountain, Narangba, Mount Nebo and Pumicestone, to help our community and others in the significant clean up. Our local volunteer firefighters from Samford and surrounds did us proud over several days helping wherever we could, through door knocking for welfare checks, traffic safety, filling sandbags and cleaning up. The Redcliffe community and businesses at the Rocklea markets were extremely grateful for the help we extended them, as were members of our own Samford Bowls Club which was inundated badly. The SRFB responded to requests quickly and effectively. Naturally, priority was given to businesses like the Rocklea Markets given the critical role they play in providing produce across South-East Queensland. In summary, the following is a snapshot of how we helped: • 59 Samford firefighters worked for 676 hours at the Rocklea Markets, washing down 93,000 sq/m of concrete or about 23 acres. • 10 Samford firefighters provided to come to the club on Monday morning to see if they could help - and help they did! Club members arrived around 8am Monday to survey the damage, with some brought to tears with what they saw. The SRFB set to work clearing mud and debris from both carpet greens - a huge task that club members could not contemplate carrying out on their own - a fantastic community effort. All that the members can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. The work continued all week. Cleaning and more cleaning, inside and out. The parquetry floor and carpets had to go. The sheds had to be hosed out, the seats that were bent over by the force of the water were straightened. The artificial grass surrounding the greens will all have to be lifted and the base under them leveled. We would like to thank the many (nonmember) volunteers who did such a great job - Anne from the SRFB (pictured) who spent Friday cleaning the mud from our driveway; Annie Smith from Bunnings Keperra who arrived with a bucket of KFC and some glue scrapers for doing the floor; John Davidson who came with his trailer; and family members and community members who gave their time so generously. We also had visits from Peter Dutton MP and Nikki Boyd MP. We will have some very important decisions to make to bring us back to where we were, so we will be looking at every grant that is available to us. Once again, a huge THANK YOU to all involved in starting our club on the road to recovery.
flood safety assistance - 48 hours. 14 firefighters worked a total of 98 hours cleaning the Samford Bowls Club. • Four firefighters filled sandbags – 26 hours. • This totals some 848 hours in which we contributed to the significant clean up. In other activities conducted by the SRFB during January and February, we were advised of 38 non-permit burns, assisted at 11 road traffic crashes, provided community assistance 4 times and attended a vegetation fire. Having witnessed several community members driving through flooded areas, we wish to reiterate the importance of community members acting responsibly during heavy rain and the flooding of roads and bridges. Whether it is fire or flood, please remain vigilant and do not put yours or others’ lives at risk. •

SAMFORD EDIBLE GARDEN TRAIL UPDATE The recipes below are but two favourites from many. We hope you can incorporate at least one into your pumpkin harvest recipe list!
PUMPKINS GALORE Pumpkins really are the lazy gardener’s best friend. Readily growing from most compost heaps, they are a spreading vine that clearly loves rich well drained soil. Find a spot with full sun and plenty of room to expand and they will require little more than a good mulch and occasional watering in dry weather. Make sure you harvest them in the dry and when the stems are shrivelled, preferably after some weeks of dry heat to cure them so they store longer. The trick is to harvest one and test it out for good firm bright orange flesh before picking more. While traditional harvest times for the humble pumpkin are autumn to winter, some of us have an early start with mature pumpkins already appearing well before the indulgent Pumpkin Soup kind of cooler weather we quite enjoy once done with the summer humidity. So now is the perfect time to get in and think about what to do with this amazingly versatile vegetable. We often eat it as a veggie, but in fact it’s a fruit. No wonder it’s good for both savory and sweet dishes. Pumpkins are the ultimate flexible food; easily cooked or roasted, mashed, cubed, pureed, pickled and fermented, they can be dressed up or down making it great for simple meals or something more elaborate.
Basic Roast Pumpkin salad Ingredients: Kent/Japanese pumpkin, roasted with oil Green leaves (basil, rocket, baby spinach, etc) Fetta Cheese in cubes Toasted pine/macadamia nuts Balsamic Dressing (caramelised balsamic is a delight) Method: Toss pumpkin in oil and roast at around 200c. Some leave the skin on, others remove it before or after roasting. Timing will depend upon the size of the pieces, so testing with a fork is useful and waiting until it’s slightly caramelised is even better! Once roasting is completed, mix with the leaves and fetta. Serve topped with nuts, drizzling the dressing over to complete. Grow the dish by roasting some other veggies in with the pumpkin such as capsicum, beetroot, onion, garlic and fennel, keeping in mind they will need to be added at times suitable for them to roast without burning or under-cooking. Leftovers are great the next day, or blitz roasted pumpkin with diced tomatoes or coconut cream and some garlic for a delicious soup (sorry, couldn’t help adding that).

Have you heard of Pickleball? ‘Contagious’ and ‘addictive’ are often the words used to describe America’s fastest growing sport, and now the Aussie’s are picking up their paddles. Pickleball is a mixture of tennis, table tennis and badminton, making it easy to learn and play. Samford’s newest tennis club, Samford Valley Tennis has been hosting outdoor Pickleball sessions on Thursday and Friday nights. Now head coach Zak Davidson will be hosting indoor Pickleball sessions each Sunday from 1pm - 3pm in the Samford Community Centre. “All my life I’ve played tennis and have been coaching for 14 years, so I was a bit hesitant to try this modified version. However, after playing for the first time just two months ago, I was hooked,” said Zak. “I’d encourage everyone to play the ce ricts Chamber of Commer ford and Dist sport -Samadults, grandparents, or kids. High school students can get a whipping from
75-year-old players, and everyone can do it while having fun, getting some exercise and building friendships,” he said. Brisbane has a large community of Pickleball players with a handful even heading to the US to play the world’s biggest tournament, The Minto US Open Pickleball Championship, played across 64 pickleball courts over 1 week in April. “Pickleball is played on a small court that promotes conversation and interaction with your opponents. It’s great for people in wheelchairs, for amputees, the hearing impaired - it just works for everyone! It helps promote social interactions, helps with loneliness and depression - a universally loved sport.” If you’d like to join in on the fun visit www.samfordvalleytennis.com.au

OUT & ABOUT SAMFORD SCOUTS GET ONTO THE WATER After all the rain and the floods in the past couple of weeks, the Samford Cub and Joey Scouts were still able to enjoy the water activities held on Saturday 5 March at Brownsea Water Activities Centre, Shorncliffe. After morning parade, the Samford youth were given a Sun and Water Safety talk and a briefing on the day’s agenda. With life jackets on and paddles in hand, the Cubs and Joeys under leadership supervision, canoed down Nudgee Creek. Amongst the muddy brown waters on a
high tide, the youth observed a lot of debris washed up from the huge weather event Brisbane witnessed the week before. It was very exciting for them all. Morning tea was by the banks of the creek and then they paddled on to Nudgee Beach. The youth walked along the path to the Nudgee Beach Reserve for lunch and a play in the playground. Excitement was high with the kids while watching the water crash into the beach walls at Nudgee Beach. After lunch, the Samford group paddled back to Brownsea and then had some down time playing board games, drawing and playing hide and seek. Homebake was next on the agenda for afternoon tea which always brings a lot of excitement to day camps. Cubs and Joeys enjoyed the biscuits, cakes and slices which had been made by their parents.
Before dinner, the Cubs and Joeys got into Patrol groups and practised their skits ready for the evening’s entertainment. Hamburgers were a hit for dinner plus jelly and fruit - what more does a Cub or Joey need. The Leaders and adult helpers also enjoyed the dinner menu. Next on the agenda was the campfire, skits and a sing-along. Great entertainment for the evening which finished with a quick hide and seek game in the dark. It was a fantastic day camp for all and a huge BRAVO to our wonderful Samford Leaders who organised the day. Noah Jorgensen (Cub Scout)

GET INVOLVED SEG ‘COME & TRY’ DAY – Take two! Our thoughts are with those impacted by the extraordinary recent weather events and flooding in our region. It was heartening though, to see such wonderful community spirit shown too. United by a love of horses and kindred spirit, complete strangers didn’t hesitate to offer support through social media with kind offers of shelter, bedding, hay, rugs and more. It’s so reassuring to be part of a connected and supportive community of like-minded horse lovers. Access to our club grounds on Denis Goodwin Reserve was significantly impacted by the flooding - as happens whenever there’s a big rain event. Our four professional sand arenas usually hold up quite well most wet seasons, however this time there was some considerable sand washout of the two eastern arenas (3 & 4), southern ends. Thanks everyone for your patience meantime, whilst we await remediation works. Notably, the sodic clay on the remainder of our club grounds

SEG’s illustrious President Richard nails the ball obstacle at a recent WE event riding ole’ Jack! If he can, anyone can! (...sorry boss)
unfortunately restricts access by even the most 4WD of vehicles, so fingers crossed the weather holds and we’ll be good to go in no time. We know everyone’s just itching to get back on their horses, so have we got an exciting event-packed season for you! Coming up on Sat 19th March is another Working Equitation (WE) ‘Come & Try’ day for members and non-members! Along with plenty of events in all 3 disciplines, there’s lots of regular clinics, training days and equine education opportunities. If you’re not yet a member of SEG, we encourage one and all to come on down and check out why we’re the largest EA club in QLD - and growing! Spectators are warmly welcomed, including dogs on leads. Grab a great coffee, relax in the shade on our Samford Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) grandstand and enjoy the picturesque surrounds. Loads of parking - enter via Samford Showgrounds main gate. OUT & ABOUT Samford Museum Flooding has been the topic of conversation all around the district in recent weeks. Photos of floodwaters published in The Village Pump will be added to our collection. Over time we have been able to obtain some interesting photos and stories of previous big floods and, as a result, we have been able to assist with enquiries relating to these floods. In time, the “2022 Big Flood” photos will also be appreciated. Photos and reminiscences held at the museum tell us of other past flooding events, such as when the milk carrier was crossing the weir at Mount O’Reilly Road. Story goes, he was collecting cans of milk from farmers around the area and the flood waters rose. He was halfway across on his return trip, when the force of the water was almost too great, so he opened the cabin doors on both sides allowing the rushing water to flow through while he drove slowly across to safe ground. With the approach of the wet season, long-time residents at the top end of Cedar Creek Road and other similar locations, always purchased enough essentials to last
them a month, knowing that heavy rain would flood roads and creeks and prevent them moving from their properties. Floods also often brought landslides around many properties but were not as frightening to the early families as bushfires. The photo above was taken at the museum recently while work was in progress on our new covered area in front of the Timber Demonstration Stage next to the entranceway from John Scott Park.
Museum Re-Opens The museum will re-open to the public from Sunday 27th March and will open each Wednesday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children. School and community groups by special arrangement. For further information, phone President Geoff Harris on 0417 610 983, or send an email to info@ samfordmuseum.com.au.

OUT & ABOUT
Samford Lions Club Each year Samford Lions group has a working bee at Kupidabin Park in Samford Village. There has been some damage to the park after the recent floods and so the early March working bee has been delayed until the ground has dried enough for cars and wheelbarrows to move over the lush green grass and avoid leaving unsightly track marks. The land in and surrounding Samford has sustained life for thousands of years. Samford’s first inhabitants were an Aboriginal tribe that belonged to the Waka language group who named the area Kupidabin, an Aboriginal word from the Waka language, meaning ‘place of possums’. Samford was an important location for “kippa-ring” or initiation ceremony. Tribes from Ipswich, Cressbrook, Mount Brisbane and Brisbane would travel here to have their “kippas” (young men) initiated. Their history remains by means of a Bora-Ring (Durn) which is still accessible to view at Wights Mountain on Upper Camp Mountain Road. There are some beautiful native trees in this park, including a Rhodosphaera Rhodanthema. This gorgeous local tree is growing well and is currently about 10 meters tall. In the spring, when it is blossoming, it stands out with its striking red sphere flowers and is a pleasure to admire. Having a quick look around at the park this morning, there is no litter to pick up, but there will be some repairs needed
to some washed away steps and to the playground area. We aim to have a working bee before the end of March, so long as the weather permits. Fortunately, there is no fresh graffiti to remove, but some sweeping is required under the shelter. If you happen to see people moving mulch around trees and removing unsightly weeds, please come and say hello. We are always ready to chat, and the Samford Lions group are happy to continue maintaining this wonderful little park that brings joy to young children and families. Alison Kenny

NATIVE PLANTS MARKET Samford Showgrounds It’s almost here! NPQ’s popular Autumn Plants Market will be held for the second time in the main pavilion (‘barn’) at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 2 April (this event used to be held at Grovely TAFE, but the Showgrounds has much better access and parking). Doors open at 9am and the market closes at 3pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to buy unusual, quality native plants at good prices and to receive expert advice about your garden. LOCAL NEWS A New Service Preserving The Past In an area that changes every year but is awash with remarkable historical stories, it is more important than ever to keep Samford’s memories alive. A new free service at certain Moreton Bay Region Libraries and Museums is now on hand to assist. Preservation Stations create digital copies of family photographs, slides, negatives and documents and can be found at Redcliffe Museum, Redcliffe Library, Bribie Island Seaside Museum, and Caboolture Library, with another station available at Pine Rivers Heritage Museum when it reopens in March. “We’ve already had a really great uptake on this service, and they generated quite a buzz on social media when we launched them,” Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor, Peter Flannery, said. “The pandemic has put the spotlight on how valuable time with family and friends is, and this service provides a great opportunity to look back on good times, and look forward to more in the future,” he said. “Digitising photos, letters, documents and films give researchers, historians and the

wider community insight into the past, and how events of the past have shaped the region we live in today.” Samford Museum Research Officer, Eileen Kemp, echoes these sentiments about the value of digitising historical records. “The importance of scanning old documents and photos, should they be lost to damage, deterioration, fire, flood, cannot be overstated,” Eileen said.

“Photos can tell more than the main subject; the backgrounds hold lots of details. Digitised photos can be enlarged and more detail discovered,” she said. While great-granddad’s slides can now be quickly digitised, home videos on VHS tapes and kids’ voices attempting a tune on cassette can also be turned into more accessible digital files at select Preservation Stations. Division 11 Councillor, Darren Grimwade, says the new Preservation Stations are beneficial for ticking off an ever-growing to-do list. “I’m sure I’m not the only one with old photo albums, slides and other important documents stacked up in boxes. It’s one of those things you keep telling yourself you’ll get to ‘one day,’ Councillor Grimwade said. “This is just another great service that proves our libraries are more than just about books these days,” he said. Visitors using the Preservation Stations can opt to donate copies of their items to Council’s local history collection at: ourstory.moretonbay.qld.gov.au. Our own Samford Museum also welcomes digitised photos and reminiscences relating to Samford’s past, with volunteers on hand to scan photos and return the originals as part of our very own digitisation service. “The Samford Museum has received and been able to share digitised photos. Not just to and from local residents, also from families who have moved away. Just recently I worked with a lady in Cairns sharing digitised photos,” Eileen said. “With so much change in land use, education, transport, homelife as well as technology and communication taking place in the past century, adults and students want

DID YOU KNOW? Stress and our Nervous System As an Osteopath with twenty-seven years of experience, I have had the opportunity to treat people with many different conditions like migraine headaches, TMJ dysfunction, back and neck pain. I’ve treated babies with colic and elderly patients with breathing difficulties. With all patients I’ve seen over the years, there is always a common thread - stress. Whether it’s physical stress due to musculoskeletal strain, physiological stress due to fighting an infection, or emotional stress due to the death of a loved one, stress is always a major disrupter of the body’s healing mechanisms. Osteopathy is based around the philosophy that we are a whole unit, and the body is constantly repairing, rebalancing and healing itself. Regardless of where stress is coming from, it inhibits our body’s ability to do this. Stress increases the amount of information traveling back to the sympathetic nervous system, and this affects every other system of the body. The
Page 16 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 18 MARCH 2022
endocrine system releases more stress hormones, the immune system functions less efficiently, the digestive system operates less effectively, and the cardiovascular system works harder. These affects are wide ranging. It has been estimated that over 80% of diseases are stress related. We have all been placed under increased stress recently, which can have a dramatic effect on our health. Remember, stress reduces the efficiency of our immune system, not great during a pandemic! So, what can we do? Rest is a great place to start, it helps reduce nervous system irritation. Unfortunately, many have lost the art of resting thinking that watching TV or playing a computer
game is resting. The best rest is when we connect with nature - we live in a wonderful region with incredible natural beauty. Have a cup of tea and watch the sunset over the mountains, listen to wildlife, feel the breeze and breathe. Osteopathic treatment also provides you with rest. It’s a fantastic way to help your body re-balance, to reduce strain patterns of the musculoskeletal system and to calm the sympathetic nervous system. Rest is a great by-product of osteopathic treatment regardless of whether you are getting treated for sciatica, headaches, asthma or sinus congestion. It is during this period of rest that our body can rebalance, repair and heal most efficiently. A great advantage of moving my practice to home is that finding rest within a treatment is far easier in natural settings. So, along with exercising and eating well, add a regular rest into your day. Are you ready to de-stress? Get in touch: 0480 239 096. Shayne Day
OUT & ABOUT Sponsorships kickstart RDA program Sponsorships from Dividing Line Fencing and the Community Bank Samford and Brendale (Bendigo Bank) have helped to financially kickstart the 2022 Samford RDA program. (Riding for the Disabled) Senior Branch Manager of the Community Bank, Mandy Bell, recently visited the Samford RDA centre at Samford Showgrounds to check on the progress of sponsored horse, Paddington Bear (pictured). Mandy said the bank’s annual horse sponsorship, which contributes to the cost of Paddington’s feed and care, was an example of how the bank invested its profits back into the community, supporting many local groups who bank with them. Community Bank Samford has been a longtime horse sponsor as well as providing a range of general support to Samford RDA over many years.
Dividing Line Fencing is a Samford RDA Centre sponsor. The local fencing company provides financial assistance to help meet the costs of running the centre. The RDA program caters for children and adults with a wide range of disabilities, helping to build core body strength, co-ordination and confidence. Samford RDA thanks the Community Bank Samford, Dividing Line Fencing and all other sponsors for their ongoing support, especially in recent times when Covid restrictions have limited the program and RDA’s fundraising capabilities.
DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT Rates rebate and extension Well it has certainly been a chaotic, emotional and exhausting couple of weeks for many residents and businesses right across the region with the unprecedented weather event we experienced. Council is continuing to work on ways to assist the community in its recovery and have made some assistance available with your rates. A one-off rates rebate of $250 for owner occupied properties that have suffered significant damage from this disaster will be available via application from 21 March and will be included on your 1 April to 30 June 2022 rates notice. The eligibility for Council’s financial hardship policy has been extended to owner-operated small businesses within the region who will also be able to apply for the rebate on their rates. If you are a residential property owner impacted by the floods, please contact Customer Service on 3205 0555 to see if you can make use of the interest free repayment plan to pay off your rates. To further assist where we can, Council is giving all ratepayers an extra 30 days to pay their rates for the quarter ending 30 June 2022. As you can appreciate, Council has
been inundated with requests for repairs to roads and infrastructure and these are being prioritised and actioned as quickly as possible, so please be mindful of the massive task ahead when you are dealing with Council staff, as the majority of them are residents and have been affected as well. There is a lot of information on Council’s website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au but if you have any questions, you can call my office on 3480 6455 or email Darren. grimwade@moretonbay.qld.gov.au Flood Response I’ve been amazed by the spirit and determination locals have shown to help others and get the Samford area on the road to recovery. One of the worst hit areas were the homes at Mayfield Road, which were totally cut off by a huge 100m long landslide that was up to 4m high in some parts and had large trees throughout. Council was notified on February 28 and immediately performed welfare checks on residents trapped in their homes with the help of the SES. Other parts of Division 11 that have been heavily affected by landslips include Campbells Pocket Road, Mount Mee, Freds Road, Ocean View, Laceys Creek Road, and the Goat Track at Highvale, which locals should avoid until our crews are able to repair them in full. Council held a special meeting to fasttrack a suite of Flood Relief packages. It includes a rates rebate and a $1 million Flood Recovery Fund for community groups to clean-up, repair and rebuild following the floods. There are further Hardship Grants accessible through the Queensland Government or by using Council’s ‘Funding Finder’. OUT & ABOUT
On Shrove Tuesday (AKA Pancake Tuesday) a small team of St Pauls folk gathered in the afternoon outside Drakes and handed freshly made pancakes to any passer-by willing to accept one. Now, we know that we had originally indicated that we would be doing it in the morning, but was it moved to the afternoon when we expected that there would be more people in the area, including families and school kids. Who knew that the schools would be closed for the day? On Sunday March 6th, Bishop Jeremy Greaves made a pastoral visit to St Paul’s and while there confirmed Bhan, Ellie and Sabrina, an unusually joyful start to the season of Lent. Lent is usually associated with restraint, self-examination and fasting. A plentiful morning tea after the service ensured that the fasting was set aside for the time being. While preaching of the account of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, Bishop Jeremy noted that “... the story is only partly about temptation. The story is really about choice, about Jesus’ choice and
ours to be faithful to God, to be faithful to the vision of the kingdom we find in the Gospel.” We seek to live out that choice by being a church that welcomes all, sharing Gods limitless love for all. For the time-being we have services at 8am and 10am. Proof of vaccination is asked for the 8am service but not required at the 10am service. We hope that this provides option where everyone can feel safe. As health directives have eased general restrictions, we will be reviewing this decision on a monthly basis. SAMFORD HEALTH AND WELLBEING SUPPORT Many Kinds of Love Recently we have seen inspiring examples of selfless love by people rescuing those in danger, giving to others in need, and providing sanctuary for folk whose homes have been lost. The ancient Greeks called it Agape (selfless love). It is the pure love given knowingly without expectation of anything in return, given without question. Sometimes that wonderful universal love comes from people who have suffered in times past. One example of this is Kim who oversees DETAIL FACE-TO-FACE and the Facebook group DETAIL.connect. D E TA I L h e l p s connect those who have experienced anxiety and depression as well as their carers. This group focuses on healthy self-love, so important if people want to be involved in other healthy sorts of love. DETAIL FACE-TO-FACE will meet again at the SCHUB on April 8 at 3.30pm. Another expression of Agape is the GOOD IDEAS FORUM led by Jenni to discuss concepts such as Love, through reference to literature, art and experience. The driving force of this discussion is its positivity, its desire to help people see the good in the world. The topic of the next forum is The Many Kinds of Love - 3.30pm on Friday 25th March at the SCHUB. Each Friday at the SCHUB, everyone is welcome to join us for a CUPPA AND A CHAT from 2.00pm till 5.00pm. It’s also a chance to grab a book or three at the free SDPPA Book Swap. Friday afternoon at the SCHUB hopefully gives folk in our community chances to build connections with others and networks of support so important in these turbulent times. A $2.00 donation covers coffee/tea and a wee bite, as well as helping in a small way, to ever improve the facilities at the SCHUB.

OUT & ABOUT SKY, SEA, LAND LINES Exhibition Artworks on, in and with paper Richard Randall Art Studio, Mt Coottha Botanical Gardens 23-27 March 10am – 4pm This exhibition celebrates and documents an emerging community of contemporary artists based in Qld that are making works of art and addressing contemporary issues through the properties of paper itself. It will be a rare pleasure and a unique experience for the public to see art work
where the medium of paper extends beyond its character as a substrate to being an essential ingredient in the portrayal of the concept of lines in our environment. The ‘Sky, Sea, Land Lines’ exhibition will present an eclectic array of works. Works that have been motivated by important moments which have been etched into the mind, making an impression on the artist; moments that are used as content to tell a story in, on and with the medium of paper. The exhibition also features 2 “Walk and Talk” sessions daily at 11.00am and 2.00pm, where visitors will be able to talk to the artists about the works. When you have enjoyed the exhibition, there is a second chance to see more works created in the Artisan Store. Many of the exhibitors have skills in other mediums, so as well as cards, notebooks, unique miniature books and journals, expect to see jewellery, baskets and works in the fibre arts. ZOE QUINN WALKING AWAY For anyone who has attended the Christmas on Main Street Community event hosted by the SDPPA over the last 2 years, you may well have enjoyed the indi-folkpop tunes of 19 year old singer-songwriter Zoe Quinn. OUT & ABOUT As recovery from the flood damage around Qld and NSW continues, the Library has been able to assist with lending equipment as well as donating items. Friday 4th March saw Andrew Faulkner of Drakes Samford draw the winning ticket in the Win a One Hour Flight in a Tiger Moth. Margaret Baltis of Samford was the lucky winner. CLS would like to thank all those who purchased tickets, in support of new premises for the Library.
Cedar Creek Public Hall requested all books of Saturday Books 4 Sale be removed by 28th February. Floods delayed removal and unfortunately, multiple boxes of books were damaged from flood waters. The remaining approximately 350 cartons of the book collection are required to be removed by 28th May 2022. Finding private land to store the collection is now of high urgency. Council has advised no land is available for lease in the Samford area, including temporary lease. The Library mostly has funds on hand to erect a certified temporary structure covering approximately
120 - 140 m2, which would provide a home for the entire book collection, including 100 cartons stored at members’ properties; provide sufficient space to access and maintain the collection and allow some book borrowing to recommence if a landowner was in agreement. Please get in touch at info@communitylibrarysamford. org with any offers of help. Bunnings Keperra once again kindly supported the Library, hosting the themed Children’s Books, Toys, Puzzles and Games fundraiser day. A second themed event Farming & Gardening; Art & Craft; and Cookbooks - will be held on 19th March 2022, 8:30am – 2:30pm, weather permitting. The majority of these high-quality books are priced at $5 each. Pictured L - R: Linda Murray, Andrew Faulkner, Alex Dalmau

OUT & ABOUT Land Buyback Program Preserves Wildlife Habitat Moreton Bay Regional Council has purchased 12.75 hectares of key koala habitat at 309 Eatons Crossing Road that will be preserved and safeguarded from development as part of the new Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes Program. Mayor Peter Flannery said this was the third and also the largest purchase to date, and there were plans to kick the program into overdrive over the coming years. “Moreton Bay is home to 119 rare, threatened or endangered wildlife species like koalas, the powerful owl, the rainforest acomis plant and many more that are integral to our local ecosystem,” he said. “These properties are strategically placed within existing Moreton Bay green corridors and the aim is to maintain, connect and enhance these green corridors so that wildlife can pass through safely and live happy lives.” Councillor Cath Tonks (Division 9) said this was a proud moment for her and local residents who have called for more green initiatives to protect wildlife. “Whenever I speak to residents about what matters to them, it always comes back to protecting the local environment and wildlife species like koalas and possums,” she said. “The Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes Program is a direct response to those calls and I’m so proud to deliver on those promises, so that our children and future grandchildren have a beautiful region to call home for decades to come. We’ve already planted 1,200 new trees at the Clear Mountain property we bought last year, which is just up the road from this one and we have more plantings scheduled so that we can restore and rehabilitate it back to its former glory.”

OUT & ABOUT DAYBORO HISTORY Floodwaters in Williams Street, Dayboro – 5th February 1931
It seems that every year we post another of the 1931 flood photos and we are forever grateful to the late Widmer Barnes, whose mother was a member of the Rohlf family, for donating them to the Historical Society. “Dayboro Cottage” is the second building. The large house was where the Station Master lived and where “Hay Cottage” is now located. This photo was taken before the flood peaked.
Dayboro has experienced a number of major floods over the years, but it is believed that the flood on 5th February 1931 was the worst. The newspapers of the day reported that rain fell at the rate of an inch [25mm] an hour and there was over 3ft [approx 915mm] of water in the main street and nearly a foot [approx 305mm] over the butter factory floor. This would have meant that the paling fence would have been under water. Photos from the 2011 flood at its peak show the tips of paling fences above water level. In 1931 Dayboro township was isolated for three days as roads, bridges and the railway line were all damaged. Carmel Bond

OUT & ABOUT
Cedar Creek Public Hall March Happenings It’s proving to be a challenging month for everyone, coping with the rainfall, watching the grass grow and grow, and helping our neighbours survive disasters. The Hall hasn’t just been only watching the grass grow, there are plans afoot to finish the month on some positive upbeat notes. The Hall’s new website is on the verge of being launched, it presents a new look, it is easy to navigate and is informative. Watch for the announcement. In the meanwhile, the ‘Cedar Creek Public Hall, Closeburn’ fb page updates events and keeps everyone in touch. The monthly T.G.I.F. (Thank Goodness it’s Friday) for March is scheduled for 25th March from 5pm – 7pm, weather permitting!
Same deal as before and is always a family BBQ Picnic. See you there! On Saturday, 26th March 9am-2.30pm the Hall’s Market Fair has a special focus on ‘Animal Welfare – domestic and wild – historically and today’. To celebrate this theme there will be dog and horse rescue stalls, with several wildlife rescue organisations represented. Two will present talks in the Hall: Wildcare Australia – Improving your gardens for wildlife; and Pine Rivers Koala Care presenting the ins and outs of the koalas. Remember, these Market Fairs are family events with something for everyone including market stalls, the BBQ’s (fundraising for the upkeep of the Hall) and of course coffee and games to amuse the kids. All this is to the backdrop of music - some local singers, a 17-piece jazz band, and our faithful Bill opening the show. The Colonial
Dancers will be raising the dust and their skirts on the Hall’s boards, and you can join in!! PADS (Pine Agility Dog Sports club) will provide some dog agility demonstrations for those dog lovers who’d like to see how it’s done. All we need now is for you to gather your family and friends and come and enjoy yourselves. Cedar Creek Public Hall, 2 Andrew Road, Closeburn. Cake donations appreciated – fundraising for the Hall’s maintenance. Old blankets, towels and flat sheet donations for the wildlife carers accepted.

OUT & ABOUT Tree Change Creates new Product Range 10 years ago, Lisa and Cameron Nobes went on an inward journey to discover what really mattered to them. Caught up in the busyness of life, their goal had always been to live a good life – but what did that mean? Lisa chose to walk away from a demanding career, and along with Cameron and their son Henry, they built a house in Highvale 6 years ago. In 2021 they launched Coco & Henry, selling a range of sustainable, luxury bedding and homewares online. Their focus is on great design that works well – urging us to not only think about the creation of products, but ultimately how long they will be loved and used (less throwing away). At the bottom of every product they sell online, you will find a ‘positive impact’ panel describing the products environmental impact. “Our home tells our story. From the everyday items to the special pieces filled with memory, our home is a reflection of who we are, who lives here, and how we live. With Coco & Henry we want to create and curate items that are worthy of being part of your story,” said Lisa.
The product range includes beautiful glass and pottery vases, as well as blankets and bedding. The bedding is made using the finest long-staple cotton, with each piece meeting the highest global organic standards (GOTS) – grown sustainably and made protecting the environment and you. “We proudly support small-scale family farmers who hand-harvest our organically grown cotton,” said Lisa. You can view their product range at www.cocoandhenry.com. au

birds, the seeds are spread and germinate in new areas. The common name is derived from the kangaroo foot-print-like shape of the deeply lobed leaves and the fruit.
Kangaroo apple The kangaroo apple (Solanum aviculare) belongs to the same family as many economically significant food plants such as potato, tomato and eggplant (aubergine). It is one of 87 species endemic to Australia, growing wild in eastern areas of Queensland, NSW and Victoria as well as on Lord Howe Island, New Zealand and New Guinea.
Two distinct species of kangaroo apple are now recognised, both of which share the same common name and properties and have a similar appearance and general range, although Solanum aviculare prefers damper environments than S. laciniatum. This upright, fast-growing, evergreen shrub reaches a height of 1 to 4 metres. It has a soft-wooded trunk that persists for several years. The 30cm long leaves are deep green above and lighter on the under-surface and are either lanceolate in shape or lobed. The hermaphroditic flowers, which appear in spring and summer, range in colour from white, through mauve to bluish-violet. They have a deeper coloured, star-shaped marking at the base and bright yellow anthers. Native bees aid fertilisation by buzz pollination – the bee sits on an anther and vibrates its wings causing the pollen to be released and stick on its body. The pollen is then transported to the next flower the bee visits and cross pollination results. Egg-shaped berries, about 2 cm long, following the flowers, are initially green but mature to an orange-red colour. All of the green parts of the plant and unripe fruit are poisonous. When ripe, the berries soften and may split exposing hundreds of tiny seeds. The pulp is juicy and sweet. Eaten by
For thousands of years, Indigenous Australians and Maori’s have used the kangaroo apple as a food source and in their medicine. The ripe fruit is high in vitamin C and beta-carotene and contain phenols (which are beneficial antioxidants that protect against heart disease, stroke and cancer), important alkaloids and a steroid that assists in the production of cortisone. It also contains tryptophan that is important in healthy skin and hair. In addition to being a significant nutritional source, kangaroo apple (known as mookitch by the Gunditjmara) fruit was applied as a poultice on swollen joints and was an effective anti-inflammatory. Ripe kangaroo apple fruit can be eaten raw or cooked, can be added to baked goods or made into jam, jelly or chutney. Since the 1960’s this plant has been extensively cultivated in Russia, India and China for use in the production of medicines (e.g. the contraceptive pill) and beauty products. An extract of the fruit is used in commercially produced skin conditioners whilst an oil extracted from the seeds acts as an antioxidant, humectant, skin conditioner and protector in cosmetics. In the garden, the kangaroo apple is useful as a hedge, in the understorey of windbreaks, for bank and erosion stabilisation and in sheltering more delicate plants until they are established. They are used as a rootstock for grafting the tree tomato (Cyphomndra betacea) and eggplant. This species has been used in the reclamation of mine wastes as they are able to grow in soils with a high concentration of heavy metals. As early colonisers of cleared or disturbed areas, they are a significant regeneration species. Want to learn more? Drop into Paten Park Native Nursery. www.ppnn.org.au
DICKSON NOTES A Message from Peter The damage from flooding happened quickly, but rebuilding will take some time. It’s a big job ahead of us, however, seeing our community unite during hard times is always inspiring and I know we will come back stronger. Thank you to the many volunteers who joined the Moreton Army and the Mud Army 2.0 to help others in need clean-up. Your efforts have been inspirational. Locally, we have also seen the team at Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) setup a Forward Operating Base at the Pine Rivers District RSL Sub-Branch to assist throughout our region. I was proud to visit them recently to find out more about their work locally and to thank them for their efforts. If you are in need of support, there is assistance available from the Federal Government that you may be eligible for. Supports can be accessed via MyGov or by calling Services Australia on 180 22 66. For small businesses, not-for-profits, and community organisations there is a joint support package from the Federal and Queensland Governments which can be applied for at www.qrida.qld.gov.au. If there is anything I can do to support
you and your loved ones during this time, please let me know. My office is open weekdays 8.30am to 5pm and I will be happy to assist however I can. Expanding the ADF I was pleased to visit the Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera recently with the Prime Minister to announce an increase in the number of Australian Defence Force Members. Keeping Australians safe in years to come is the highest priority for the Morrison Government. This investment will see an increase in the Defence workforce of approximately 18,500 by 2040. This growth will enable Defence to: • deliver new capabilities in coming years, including nuclear powered submarines; more ships; aircraft and advanced weapons. • build warfighting capabilities in the evolving domains of space, and information and cyber. • provide redundancy and resilience in critical areas of the workforce. • increase support to delivery and enabling areas such as intelligence; capability and acquisitions; information, computing and communications infrastructure.
Child Care Subsidy Increased For families with more than one child in care, you may have noticed that your Child Care Subsidy has recently increased. That is thanks to the changes that came in effect on 7 March 2022. Families with more than one child aged five years or under, in care, now get a higher subsidy for their second child and any younger children. This will make a real difference for about 250,000 eligible Australian families who will be more than $2,200 a year better off. The annual subsidy cap of $10,655 was also removed on 10 December 2021 and will be applied retrospectively for the whole 2021/22 financial year. Find out more at www.dese.gov.au/child-care-subsidy. What’s important to you? Please get in touch with me at peter. dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities for our community.
