MEET THE CANDIDATES: FEDERAL ELECTION 2022 Aged care failings, the rising cost of healthcare, climate change, aircraft noise and local NBN coverage were key topics raised by Samford residents to this year’s Dickson candidates. The Meet The Candidates event took place in late April at Samford’s Farmers Hall, providing a key forum for the community to meet those hopeful of representing us in Canberra. Organised and facilitated by the Samford and Districts Progress and Protection Association (SDPPA), all candidates in the upcoming Federal election were invited and encouraged to appear at the event, with the following in attendance: (Photo: L-R): Ali France (Australian Labor Party), Alina Karen Ward (United Australia Party), Alan Buchbach, (Independent), Tamera Gibson (Pauline Hanson’s One Nation), Thor Prohaska (Independent), Vinnie Batten (Queensland Greens). Apologies were received from Peter Dutton (Liberal National Party of Queensland) and Lloyd Russell (Liberal Democratic Party). Candidates had five minutes to introduce themselves and outline major policies before the floor opened to questions from local residents keen to know how each candidate would respond to local and national issues. The evening commenced with discussion on NBN blackspots in Samford Valley, with all candidates agreeing that the current technology being used was insufficient to
meet the needs of reliable internet in this area. There was discussion on the ALP’s original plan for fibre-optics which was priced at $29 billion compared to the $60 billion current spend on the NBN. “If I do get elected, I will make it my mission to improve telecommunications across this Valley,” Ali France (ALP) said. The ALP plans to expand full-fibre NBN access across Australia, while satellite options were also raised by Independent Alan Buchbach. “It’s less than $15.5 million for a satellite, you can park that over any area that can’t get good NBN coverage, instead of billions of dollars to lay out cable,” he said. Tamera Gibson (One Nation) said a satellite option would work best for remote
areas but advocated a differential system depending on where people were located. Independent Thor Prohaska advocated direct community action, noting this same issue came up at the last Meet The Candidates meeting three years ago. He encouraged residents to keep petitioning their local member. The rising cost of seeing a GP was another question from the audience that drew applause. Tamera Gibson (One Nation) said she was keen to increase funding for GPs under the Medicare rebate, while Alina Karen Ward (UAP) said her party would put more money back into hospitals. VILLAGE PUMP UPDATES Continued from Front Page Ali France (ALP) outlined her party’s plan to create 50 Urgent Care bulk billed clinics to take the pressure off Emergency hospital visits, plus a commitment to place more GPs in regional areas. Vinnie Batten (Qld Greens) outlined a plan to include dental care and mental health care into Medicare. The parties differed on their approaches to climate change with Vinnie Batten (Qld Greens) seeking to put an end to any new coal and gas sites. “If we want to be serious about transitioning out by 2030, the idea of opening more coal and gas is like trying to put a fire out by pouring petrol on it, it’s absurd,”he said. Tamera Gibson (One Nation) said that the country could not be run in the short term solely on solar, wind and hydro. “I want to be able to go to the hospital at midnight and know there’s enough power there for me to have an operation,” she said. Independent Alan Buchbach said Australia’s emissions paled in comparison to China’s, putting forward an adaptation policy responding to drought and flood mitigation. Ali France (ALP) said her party has a target for a 43% reduction in greenhouse gas emission by 2030. “We absolutely need to take action on climate change. We can’t just say it’s somebody else’s problem.” Dickson is considered a marginal seat, with a swing of 4.64 percent required to change hands. It has been held by Peter Dutton (LNP/Liberal) since 2001. Tanya Hall

FOUND!! A GREAT COMMUNITY EFFORT. How amazing that this missing plaque has been found! After we published an article in the last edition about this missing memorial plaque, a resident at Cedar Creek who had found the plaque under the soil (mud) near the site, got in touch with the Sue and Adrian Hunter to let them know it was safe. They had cleaned the plaque and looked after it, hoping they would find where it belonged. The plaque was returned to the family last week and re-attached to the rock, after debris was removed from the site and the area tidied up. Sue and Adrian would like to thank Cr Darren Grimwade for his support and suggestion to contact this paper, as well as the wonderful people who kept the plaque safe and helped to clear the site. Well done community!

LOCAL NEWS ALL SCOUT CAMP OUT On ANZAC weekend, Samford Scouts held their first whole group camp for over 15 years. Baden Powell Park saw nearly 60 Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers come together for fun, games and adventurous activities. Our youth ranged from 5 years up to 22 years old. On the Friday night the Scouts constructed an amazing gateway at the entry to camp, which the younger sections were invited to walk through as they arrived on Saturday morning. Once camp was set up, we split into groups for the day’s adventures of abseiling, swimming, pedal buggies, bottle rockets and challenge games. The challenges included the cookie face contest and making an origami cup out of paper, from which they were able to drink. The rain blessed us on and off all day but was not enough to dampen spirits. The evening saw us gather around the campfire, lit by a youth from each section wielding a fire stick. We shared songs, chants and hilarious skits, before moving quietly back to camp. A few hardy Cubs ventured off for a night hike around the park, but most headed straight to bed, happy and exhausted. Following a hearty breakfast on the Sunday morning, we gathered for a moment of reflection and thankfulness, before heading to the dam for more antics. The older sections constructed rafts which were enjoyed by all on the dam - though some lasted longer than others before collapsing amidst great laughter! We had a really cool slippery slide as well as many water games on land. Back at camp we shared a yummy lunch, along with a stunning cake. A huge thank you to all the Leaders and parents who assisted on the weekend and thank you also to the youth for being so amazing. Let’s do it again! Judith Brumler (Kaa)

Samford Support Network Working together to help local community members
YOUR TIME CAN HELP SO MANY Samford Support Network is growing rapidly with members of our community who need help and support. This means we need more volunteers to help us meet this growing need. Volunteer roles are flexible - you may choose to drive a community member to medical or social appointments, help provide food boxes on a Sunday, join our handyman/gardening group, or offer to help with the many additional jobs we have each week. We are always very grateful for any time our volunteers can give. To find out more, or to apply online, please
As a not-for-profit organisation, Meals on Wheels Samford relies heavily on dedicated, regular volunteers. National Volunteer Week is a great time to celebrate and thank them for the vital role they play in serving our community. We will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation lunch on 2nd June, sponsored by Dominos Samford. Along with our regular volunteers, we invite anyone interested in volunteering with us, to join us for lunch and find out more about what we do and how you can help people in this community. We’ve had a great response so far to our request for volunteers, but we’d love to have more. Please contact Dee or Tanja on 0409 920 824 by 30 May to RSVP for the lunch, or give us a call at any time to learn more about what we do, or how we can assist you or your family members with meal deliveries.

Volunteer and reconnect with your community Brendale Evening VIEW Club is calling on members of the community to consider volunteering for children’s education charity, The Smith Family, as part of National Volunteer Week, 16-22 May. VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a leading women’s organisation with close to 300 clubs across Australia, all dedicated to supporting children in need with their education through The Smith Family. Members do this through community fundraising, spreading awareness and volunteering. One of the key themes for National Volunteer Week this year is about bringing people together through volunteering, which Brendale Evening View Club President Shayne believes is more important than ever before. “Last year, COVID meant we couldn’t have that hands-on connection with the community, which was really hard for a lot of people. Volunteering is a great way to get back out there, make friends, and feel like you’re really making a difference to the lives of young people and their families,” she said. Members of Brendale Evening VIEW Club volunteer for The Smith Family by contributing their time to the many fundraising activities. “There are many opportunities for people to help out. We are always looking for women to join us in supporting The Smith Family and we’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch and come along to our next meeting to learn more about VIEW,” said Shayne. The Smith Family’s CEO, Doug Taylor, said volunteers have played a vital role in delivering much-needed support for its work during a particularly disruptive period. “It’s been a tumultuous year with the impacts of COVID-19 and most recently, the devastating weather conditions across Queensland and New South Wales affecting so many Australians,” Taylor said. “We are very grateful to all VIEW members for continuing to donate their time and energy throughout these times.” Brendale Evening VIEW Club: Call Shayne on 0409 991 428 or visit www.view.org.au.
LOCAL NEWS A SAMFORD STAR RISES After moving from Samford to Hollywood North (a.k.a Vancouver, Canada) Alaska Leigh is set to make her screen debut in the Television movie, ‘Ties That Kill’. The movie is set to premiere in 2022 on Lifetime TV. Alaska plays the supporting lead role of Hannah Williams, who is placed in a foster family with her sister Darcie. When Hannah disappears without a trace, it’s up to Darcie to solve the mystery and save the family from truths that threaten to destroy everything. Alaska moved to Canada right before the pandemic to dive wholeheartedly into her acting career, and her courage and selfbelief is paying off. “It’s been crazy and definitely an adjustment moving from Samford, and everything I know, to the other side of the world,” she said. “I miss all my friends and family in Australia so much, but I absolutely love living in Vancouver and it’s home now. I feel so blessed for the team I have here.” Working on ‘Ties That Kill’ involved a number of sleepless nights, but there was much support along the way from other cast and crew. “We filmed the entire movie in ten days, so we were working on an incredibly tight and hectic schedule,” Alaska said. “It really is a movie about family and we became so close over the course of filming which
Ask Me Anything comes to Samford Ask Me Anything (AMA) can be a fun method for stimulating conversation and it can also become somewhat insightful and a touch controversial. Google it and you’ll see what we mean. So, the Samford Sustainable Business Network will be holding a very social gathering where AMA will be the process and a couple of well known identities will be the starting points for saying to the whole group “Ask me anything” …. and promising to give authentic answers…. not just about sustainability! Watch this space in the next Village Pump to see when and where the event will be on in June, and with whom as the AMA starters. Howard Nielsen Samford Sustainable Business Network with Green Street
made going to work everyday incredibly fun. Jonathan, our director, was extremely collaborative and allowed us to have so much freedom in our work which I definitely think is going to translate on screen. I loved every second (maybe not the night shoot in -4 degrees in the Canadian snow), but it was worth it.” Alaska has also been busy performing voiceover work for two animated children’s series, set to be released this year.
“‘My Brother the Monster’ and ‘Go Fish’ are very cute children’s television shows. Voice acting for these was super fun and I was so excited to see the animations,” Alaska said. Her current on-screen work has developed from an earlier love of stage acting. “In Australia I used to do a lot more musical theatre and I have transitioned into more film/TV work. The industry is booming in Vancouver and my agent and manager are absolute superstars, so that definitely helps,” Alaska said. “Everybody says this but it’s incredibly true: you really do need a very thick skin to pursue a career in the arts. That’s something I’ve had to learn along the way.” Despite her imminent star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Alaska still has ties to her hometown. “I will always love Samford and it will always feel like home to me. My dad, Grahame Wrobel, still lives in Samford and I just got back from visiting him,” she said. “My favourite thing about Samford was always the markets and how immersed in nature that part of the world feels. I love seeing wildlife (and people’s cute dogs) everywhere!” Tanya Hall

ECO-CORRIDOR UPDATE Eco-Corridor Restoration Under Way We held our monthly MBRC-led bushcare working bee on Sunday 10 April. Our main focus was planting some advanced trees at the top of the bank along the Eco-Trail and by the picnic site. Most of the larger trees were purchased from Wompoo Native Nursery at Closeburn, a few were from the NPQ plants market, a large Hoop Pine was kindly donated by subcommittee member Bob Millar and three Macadamia integrifolia trees were supplied by the Macadamia Trust. The species added to the top of the bank included Peanut Tree (Sterculia quadrifida), Firewheel Tree (Stenocarpus sinuatus), Hard Brown Laurel (Cryptocarya sclerophylla), Native Olive (Olea paniculata), Pencil Cedar (Polyscias murrayi), Long Jack (Flindersia xanthoxyla), Ribbonwood (Euroschinus falcata) and Giant Steelwood (Backhousia subargentea). The high species diversity distinguishes the Eco-Corridor from most other bushcare sites. We also did some infill planting of tubestock in our newly cleared area on the river bank, which had been
Page 6 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 13 MAY 2022
affected by the flood. Meanwhile our more experienced weeders continued removing a bad infestation of Madeira Vine along the edge of the riverside remnant opposite revegetation zone P2.
Volunteers planting advanced trees along the Eco-Trail
On 14 April, our birders recorded 60 species (seen or heard) during our monthly survey of the Eco-Corridor, which is a very impressive total given that the summer migrants (such as Dollarbird, Eastern Koel and Channel-billed Cuckoo) had departed and the winter visitors (such as Rose Robin) were yet to arrive. Highlights were seeing a large flock of Topknot Pigeons fly over, as well as a pair of White-necked Herons. Recently, shelving units and hooks were fitted to the SDPPA storage bay at the SCHUB, making the Eco-Corridor tools and equipment much tidier and more accessible.
We thank the SDPPA for organising and funding this work. On 2 May our birders carried out our 5th quarterly survey of woodland vegetation plots at QUT SERF, Camp Mountain. This TERN citizen science pilot program uses the 2 hectares in 20-minutes protocol, which can be challenging in this habitat, so the team uses a GPS app to ensure that the whole plot is covered in the allotted time. It was great to see a Painted Buttonquail at last, having encountered their ‘platelets’ on previous visits. Winter visitors had arrived in good numbers, including Spotted Pardalotes, Grey Fantails and Rose Robins. Our next bushcare working bee will be on Sunday 15 May from 2pm to 4 pm (we don’t hold it on our usual second Sunday because of Mother’s Day). Our focus this month will be on weed control. Afterwards, we will be re-instating our much-loved afternoon tea, which gives our volunteers a chance to socialise once the hard work is done. We hope you will join us. You can contact us via email (ecocorridor@ gmail.com) or follow our Facebook (www. facebook.com/EcoCorridor/) or Instagram pages. Peter Storer
EDIBLE GARDEN TRAIL TOURS 14 & 15 MAY
We are so excited to bring you this second Samford Edible Garden Trail (SEGT), our first foray into a two-day, weekend event. It’s wonderful to have 13 amazing and inspiring gardens open. Please be aware that some gardens will be open both days, and some only the Saturday or Sunday, so check our website (samfordediblegardentrail.com. au) and make sure the gardens you are interested in are open on the day you visit. Tours are offered at most, with details of these also on the website.
Is that Costa? But wait, there’s more good news for you edible gardening enthusiasts! Having this event over a weekend, has given us the opportunity to invite all trail goers to meet us on Saturday afternoon (14 May) at Millen Farm after the gardens have closed (bring a chair or picnic rug) to enjoy listening to a panel discussion on ‘Exploring how we support locally grown food & local initiatives for change’. We are very fortunate to have Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia, Phil and Alice from Loop Growers, and Morag Gamble from Permaculture Education Institute as our panellists. What a line-up! We are all looking forward to hearing their thoughts on this topic, and what the future of edible gardening might look like. The discussion starts at 4pm; please allow time to park the car, bicycle or other personal mobility devices! Don’t miss out! You can only come along to this amazing panel discussion if you have a Trail ticket (Sunday-only ticket holders are also welcome); tickets will be checked as you arrive. Thank you to all those who have purchased their ticket already. The SEGT is an initiative of the Samford and Districts Progress and Protection Association (SDPPA) and our ticket sales proceeds will be used to establish a community garden in Samford. We gratefully acknowledge the support from the Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank, as the sponsor of the SEGT. Please visit our website or Facebook page (Samford Edible Garden Trail) for tickets and further information. We can’t wait to see you there!

LOCAL NEWS
Samford Area Mens Shed On ANZAC Day we returned to Jolly’s Lookout after a two-year absence. COVID restrictions and car park repairs had made the site unavailable. This year roadworks looked like they would be a showstopper but that was not the case. Up to 150 people braved a wet morning to gather and pay their respects to those who had served and those who had not returned. Last Post and Rouse were played by Felix Gow who willingly stepped in when our regular bugler was unavailable. Many thanks to all those who gathered on the morning. The rain held off until we started when a light drizzle settled in. A wet autumn has kept us nervously inspecting the church grounds ahead of markets days but thankfully this far there has been no need to cancel. May this continue. The Fresh Foods Market has been a real hit. A quieter more relaxed market has found groups gathered around tables over conversation with coffee and crepe. Hamburgers and cupcakes where popular as well. My disappointment was not getting

Time and the perception of time has been a subject that has intrigued, perplexed and frustrated humankind since time immemorial. Such sayings as “time flies when you’re having fun”, “time never stands still” and “time waits for no man” come to mind. It is interesting to note that time is not only flexible but tricky as well. How often it seems that time does seem to go fast when we’re doing something pleasant, yet seems to drag on when a tedious chore has to be dealt with. Samford Area Men’s Shed (aka SAMS) is about to celebrate its 10th year anniversary. It seems like a long time ago that the idea of a men’s shed in Samford was first thought of yet, looking back, it seems that the last 10 years have flown by. So much has happened since then, so many men have passed through SAMS shed door, so many have come and gone and so much has happened, contributing to the growth and success of Samford Area Men’s Shed.
Sunday 15th May has been earmarked as the day of celebration and right now, the men are busy getting the place spruced up and stocked up, ready to invite the populace of Samford to come along and help celebrate the milestone of 10 years of SAMS. This is not only a day of celebration, but also the opportunity to show the people of Samford what SAMS was in the past, what it is in the present and will be in the future. People of Samford and surrounds, why not come along and see what SAMS is all about on Sunday 15th May, between 12 noon and 3pm. LOCAL NEWS Funding Success Thanks to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the Library has now taken possession of a four metre flat deck trailer. The trailer will serve as a mobile Books 4 Sale unit, with puzzles and games for all ages available for sale. Thanks to the RSL Samford, the trailer will be operating Saturdays from the RSL car park. The mobile unit is expected to be operational in June, as the library priority this month is getting the entire community asset of the book collection into one place. Currently some 100 cartons are stored at several members private properties. In other news, thanks to the Brisbane Airport Corporation’s Community Giving Fund, the library received $400 to purchase two new pneumatic wheel trolleys capable of carrying 300kg, to help in moving the book collection to more permanent storage. The CGF voluntarily gave the library an extra $200 as (quote) “we felt the library was more than deserving of the extra funds”. As representing Government Internal and Public Affairs, they also expressed an interest in what the library is doing and have requested a visit. A meeting will take place in June. and would like to create beanies, children’s jumpers, pyjamas etc, the wonderful CCC, an initiative of Lions, collect and give often to the homeless and victims of domestic violence. We can be part of that initiative. In the isolated communities of Arnhem Land, nurses often try to provide good quality clothing to children who need to be flown out for medical attention. We can help with that. Those who love creating cards, or letter writing might like to write kind messages to people in nursing homes or to refugees, prisoners or to those in women’s refuges.
Sometimes small gifts created by the people in the group might be included. Even in our own community there are people who would love a message of thanks or encouragement because they do a great job or are feeling down. The list is endless. It’s a very positive way to make the world a little better. To do this, Lucie would appreciate any donations of wool, material, notepaper, card and old cards, beads, ribbons or any other bibs and bobs that might help. If you can donate anything, please drop them into the SCHUB on a Friday afternoon. If you would like to be part of Lucie’s Crafting Kindness, join us on June 17 at the SCHUB. SAMFORD MUSEUM UPDATE Samford Museum SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY EVENTS Commemorating ANZAC Day again after two years absence saw good crowds visit our displays with children (and parents) eagerly searching for answers to their treasure hunts or making a cold-metal poppy with Martin in the Blacksmith shop. Thank you to Rodney Fogg for his display of memorabilia from his service in Vietnam. On the Labour Day holiday, it was wonderful to witness families whose senior members have vivid memories of the Camp Mountain train disaster, reflecting on the event of 75 years ago, as well as rekindling their acquaintances. Time passes but memories, passed down to younger generations, will last forever. Our blacksmith Martin has commenced visiting on the first Sunday of each month. Martin will answer your questions about Blacksmiths and will sharpen tools and perform other commission work as needed. It is unlikely he will be sharpening any farmers’ plough shears, however in times

past, this was the time of the year when farmers checked their equipment in readiness to cultivate their river and creek flats for winter vegetable crops such as cabbages, peas and cauliflowers. Tomatoes, cucumbers, turnips, carrots and beetroot were also grown. 1/- (one shilling = 10cents) per sugarbag of peas was a good price. This was in the days before the convenience of frozen peas. When there was a glut of vegetables at the markets, growers received a bill for freight. Hungry youngsters didn’t snack on chips or lollies, they took a saltshaker to the farm and feasted on fresh tomatoes and
cucumbers. In summertime, watermelon was the favourite snack to take when going for a swim. During WW2, production increased to supply the demand of the American Army personnel based at Camp Strathpine. In time, market gardening declined in our districts with the development of irrigation systems in the Redland Bay districts. to collect bread, fruit and vegetables on a fortnightly basis, and to package them into food boxes for collection. Good organisational and planning skills are needed as well as good communication skills (including email communication) and an interest in working with other local organisations. The Events Coordinator would assist the Management Committee to run events for education, publicity and to raise funds. Events range in size from single SSN marketing stalls, sausage sizzles, SSN Christmas in Main Street, community and member training/presentations through to annual (hopefully!) large community events with up to 500 people. The events are usually resourced by SSN volunteers and may require procurement of goods (food, etc) and coordination with other community organisations and groups. You will have good organisational skills, a love for planning an event from beginning to end, good communication skills and can work alone and in a team. The role of Risk Management Coordinator is to administer the identification, assessment, mitigation and reporting of risks impacting the SSN. The Management Committee remains responsible for risks impacting the SSN. This role is important for events as well as all of the SSN operating functions. We would like you to have a good understanding of risk management processes and methods, good organisational and time management skills. If you have the relevant skills, are looking for a new opportunity to use and develop them, and are interested in helping your community, please contact us for more information on ssn@ samfordsupportnetwork.com or 0470 214 916.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED As COVID restrictions ease, the SSN is increasing some of its events and activities back to pre-COVID days. As a result, we are looking for a Food Transport Coordinator, an Events Coordinator and a Risk Management Coordinator to assist us. These are unpaid, volunteer roles. OUT & ABOUT COMPARE THE PAIR Our local dainty ‘blue wrens’ are loved by those lucky enough to have them around their properties or in their local park. But did you know that there are two species of blue fairywrens in the Samford district and that only the adult breeding males have blue plumage? The females and juveniles are a rather drab brown colour, as are the non-breeding males (females have a reddish bill, whereas the males retain the black bill in both species). Superb Fairywrens are more likely to be seen because they will sometimes venture into quite open habitats such as lawns, as long as there is shrubby cover to dash to if threatened. The breeding male has a pale blue cap, teardrop-shaped ear-tufts and upper back, with a distinct black eye-stripe from the bill to nape (back of head). He has a blue-black throat, lower back and tail, contrasting with brown wings. In denser habitats (especially Lantana), watch out for the superficially similarlooking Variegated Fairywren, which is a shyer species that rarely ventures onto open ground. The breeding adult male also has a cobalt blue cap and ear tufts, which end in a sharp point. He lacks the black eye-stripe of

the Superb, but the most obvious difference is the vivid rufous ‘shoulder’. He also has a more strongly graduated long tail. The females can be distinguished from Superb by the dark patch between the bill and eye.
For a kid who dragged herself up, Nat Lowndes did a great job. A self-confessed bogan, Nat grew up in Kallangur in the 80s when bush still abounded, and kids could still be a bit wild. Nat, in spite of her troubled homelife, developed into a cheeky, risk-taking, intelligent, gracious woman who married Craig Lowndes, helping him become a three-time V8 Supercar champion, a five-time Barry Sheene Medalist, a seventime winner of Australia’s most prestigious motor race, the Bathurst 1000 and two-time winner of the Bathurst 12 Hour, by handling his busy schedules and his business interests, providing strong, loyal, loving support while creating a delightful family. This biography not only opens up the mysterious inner world of motorsport but also through excerpts of interviews gives insight into the lives and backgrounds of other drivers’ wives and long-term devoted fans. This is a first book for Natalie Kile, journalist, biographer and friend of Nat Lowndes. At times the writing is stilted but the story is definitely worth the read. If you are a fan of motorsport, have fond memories of flannies, souped up Holdens and Fords, or like tales of guts and resilience, then this is the book for you…and it’s by a oncelocal who ran a scout group. I picked it up expecting to plough through it but became captivated by the Aussie spirit it captures. Julie Martin

Fairywrens live in family groups and have complex social hierarchies, which are being studied in the Fairywren Project (https:// fairywrenproject.org/) run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca, NY. The males don’t usually moult into their breeding plumage until they are 2 to 3 years of age. Fairywrens are cooperative breeders, with other members of the family group helping to raise the young. They are notoriously promiscuous, with a large proportion of young raised not sired by their apparent fathers. Peter Storer

LOCAL NEWS TWO AUTHORS, DIFFERENT PATHS Slashed Arts funding means grants and programs for emerging authors have been savaged. The Australian Society of Authors’ CEO, Olivia Lanchester said, “We (writing and publishing) are the lowest funded of the major art forms …despite high participation rates in reading.” Having a manuscript selected from the huge slush piles of traditional publishers is harder than drowning in a bottle of Waterman Ink.
Two talented local writers are exploring the world of publishing in different ways, after a fortuitous meeting through the local Facebook group. Inspirational businesswoman and mother, Jodie Miller (pictured above), author of the highly successful What Does It Feel Like Being
Born: A Memoir Of Maternity Activism, took control of most aspects of her first book’s journey by navigating her way through indie publishing maze. Jodie, who is writing and researching her second book, is an encyclopedia of “how can I do this and what next” for local writers.
Busy mum and lawyer, Rae Helmore (pictured above), is building pathways to traditional publishing for her riveting memoir through creating a remarkable writing CV. Rae’s humorous memoir describes the dangerous downside of perfectionism, through her experiences as a professional woman surviving postnatal depression during the pandemic. Rae was one of only ten authors selected for Printable, an intensive workshop to build author brand. Her manuscript, I Started Hearing Shark Music was longlisted for the prestigious Hawkeye Publishing Manuscript Development Prize. The competition was fierce in the nicest writerly way. Unfortunately, Rae didn’t make the next cut. As a part of the 2021 SBS Emerging Writers’ Competition, an extract from Rae’s marvellous work, Why I Bought A Tired
Mum An Almond Croissant, was published online in SBS Voices. These achievements stand her in good stead as she submits to publishing houses struggling in the current economic climate. Watch out for her work when published, it is honest, witty and lyrical - a wonderful read. Stories are pivotal to the way we understand ourselves as individuals, citizens and as a nation. Stories like Rae’s and Jodie’s need to be told, read and shared for they show what it is to be human. If you want to follow their journeys, their Instagrams are @jodiemillerwrites and @raehelmore. Talented authors like Rae and Jodie, need the support of grants and programs, so that the essence of our life is recorded. The smashing of Arts funding means many wonderful stories are being lost because so many Arts initiatives are being cut. Julie Martin

OUT & ABOUT DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT Council Recovery Fund Recipients A special Council meeting was held to fast-track a range of Flood Relief Packages including a $1 million Flood Recovery Fund for community groups who needed to carry out repairs or just clean up after the floods. I am pleased to say that round 1 and 2 of these grants have been awarded allowing community groups and clubs to carry out much needed works and provide some relief after the weather event earlier this year. Round 1 was a Relief Grant which assisted the Samford Netball Club to get their courts cleaned and back into play with their grant of $4,581 and the Samford District Bowls Club were able to be reimbursed for cleaning costs with their grant of $1,597. Round 2 was a Restoration Grant with the Samford District Bowls Club again being assisted by the funds and will be putting their grant of $20,000 to good use replacing floor coverings at the club. Samford Riding for the Disabled will be able to restore fencing and carry out works to the surface of the mounting yard with the grant they received for $10,198. You can keep updated on available grants for your community group or business by registering with council’s Funding Finder. This free service allows you to search for grants available across a wide range of categories, not just from Council, but State, Federal and commercial organisations. By registering, you can receive emails to alert you of suitable grants when they are
released. The website is also a great source of general information and support relating to funding opportunities. Visit Council’s website: mbrc@moretonbay.qld.gov.au and search ‘Funding Finder’ to make sure that you don’t miss out on opportunities to apply for available grants across the Moreton Bay Region. FREE: FIRE PREPAREDNESS SESSIONS The popular fire management information session and workshop series is coming to Mt Nebo, Kobble Creek and Clear Mountain, giving local landholders the chance to share and learn how to prepare for and manage fire on their properties and in the surrounding landscape. The FREE one-day sessions will focus on fire management roles and responsibilities, fire season planning and preparation, as well as managing fire regimes to protect and enhance native vegetation. The initial information session will be followed by a more intensive fire planning workshop. Workshop attendees will learn about their land types and native vegetation, be given a set of free maps for their properties and receive assistance to develop their own property management planning kit. Fire management plans work best when developed in collaboration with neighbours, so if you are interested in attending, you are encouraged to speak with your neighbours and see if they might be interested in joining you. NOTE: to attend the workshop, you must attend the initial information session. The minimum property size requirement to attend the planning workshop is 1.5
hectares, unless the property is next to or adjoining a very large natural area. Representatives from Moreton Bay Regional Council, the Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium (QFBC), and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) will share information about their roles and offer advice on bushfire risk in the area and planning for the approaching fire season. These sessions will support landholders to create individual property fire management plans, local laws, vegetation management, fire and grazing, fire and timber production and the conservation of plants and animals will also be discussed. The QFBC - a program of Healthy Land & Water - is partnering with representatives from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to deliver the sessions. For more information, please contact Craig Welden from the QFBC - craig.w@hlw.org.au or 0437 726 279. These workshops are made possible through funding from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.

LOCAL NEWS DICKSON NOTES A Message from Peter We enjoy a great lifestyle here in Samford Valley and I am working hard to protect it so that your children and their children can grow up to enjoy the things we know and love about our local area. It has been difficult in the past few years and there are new challenges ahead, but just as we have done through covid and the floods, our community will come together to support each other. We know the pandemic and ongoing conflict in Ukraine are pushing up the cost of living for local families. The Morrison Government is helping families deal with the cost of living as part of our plan for a strong economy and a stronger future. The LNP’s practical plan includes: Cutting fuel tax in half for six months, already saving you 22 cents per litre every time you fill up. A one-off $420 cost of living tax offset for more than 10 million low-and-middle income earners. Individuals receiving the low and middle income tax offset will now receive up to $1,500 and couples up to $3,000 from 1 July. A one-off $250 cost of living payment for more than 6 million Australians. The Federal Liberal National Government is also making it easier for Australians to buy their first home, making medicines more affordable on the PBS, and lowering the cost of childcare. Our plan to ease the cost of living for families is only possible because of Australia’s strong economy. Unemployment is nearing a 50-year low and more Australians have a job now than ever before. Locally, my plan involves building the road, rail and community facility upgrades we need to make our community even better. We are building important projects like more car parking for commuters at Ferny Grove train station, upgrading local roads and a re-elected Morrison Government will build much needed facilities at Samford Riding for the Disabled to better support their work. Our country still faces many challenges and there is much more to do. Let’s not turn back. What’s important to you? Please get in touch with me at peter. dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities for our community. You can drop into my next mobile office. I am approaching 2,500 visits in my mobile office and have helped thousands
of residents with local issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. Alternatively, you can drop by my office on Gympie Road, Strathpine during business hours. Or visit my website www. peterdutton.com.au for more information. Peter Dutton MP Federal Member for Dickson

KUPIDABIN NEWS Thank you to all the families who attended the Fairy Festival at Kupidabin on Sunday 1st May with their little fairies and elves. It was a beautiful day – no rain – a few hiccups - we will do better next year. This is an Annual Event – a Revival of our Deer Farm Festivals we commenced in 2005. Woody the mischievous Wood Elf returned again after a 6-year holiday to greet the children and have photos taken in the ‘Magical’ Fairy Garden. Our apologies are extended to the stall holders with their beautifully decorated stalls. Our committee were not aware we did not have signals for phone service on the site selected on the property, which made it a little difficult for sales!! Thank you again for all who attended. SHARING THE ROAD WITH HORSES Samford and the surrounding districts have attracted more and more people wanting to enjoy a country lifestyle. More people, means of course, more traffic on our roads – and unfortunately vehicles and horses are never a good mix. Riders and horses are injured all too often and devastatingly, lives are lost. This article highlights some of the challenges faced by horse riders negotiating busy roads and will hopefully give helpful tips to drivers unfamiliar with horse behaviour. Firstly, horses are a ‘flight animal’, meaning that when they are scared or spooked their instinct is to escape from danger. This is when it gets dangerous as the horse no longer perceives their surroundings. A spooked horse may suddenly jump sideways, rear up or bolt (gallop uncontrollably) and potentially run into fences, over embankments or in front of vehicles. This can happen quickly and with very little warning. I’m sure very few horse riders enjoy riding near busy roads, but unfortunately there is not always a safer alternative. To get to a quiet trail or bush track, horse riders usually have to travel along sections of roads shared by all kinds of vehicles.

Anyone driving past a horse being ridden near or on the road needs to be alert, slow down and move over to allow as much space as possible between the vehicle and the horse. Always keep a close eye on the horse. If it seems agitated (moving its feet quickly or throwing its head in the air) or if the rider is signalling to you, please pull up until the horse has calmed down or the rider gives you a wave to say everything is under control. If the rider is still unable to settle the horse, they may wish to dismount. A helpful driver can warn approaching traffic by using their hazard lights and remaining in a safe place away from the unsettled horse until they know the rider is safe. When you are driving past what appears to be a quiet relaxed horse, be aware that this situation can change very quickly. You should be travelling at a slow enough speed to be able to brake in time to avoid a collision. A horse that is doping along with its head down can kick a bottle in the grass or suddenly see something that they can’t identify. It can react with lightning speed and run onto the road into an oncoming vehicle. When we are driving, we often have the radio on and the windows up and can hear very little noise outside the vehicle. However, for the horse rider it’s a very different scenario. Car tyres running onto the cats-eyes in the middle of the road or hitting puddles or loose stones and debris can create a lot of noise, and some of these objects can become projectiles. Trailers that rattle and trucks with flapping tarps or loose ratchet straps are all terrifying to many horses and can have a horse fearful long before the vehicle is close to them. Most motorbike riders are aware of how much noise their machines emit, so slowing down and backing off the throttle when they see a horse helps to reduce noise that can cause the horse to panic. Cyclists and mountain bike riders who suddenly come up behind a horse put themselves, as well as the rider, in danger, because they may not be easily heard. A suddenly startled horse can kick out in fear or react unpredictably. Please don’t ring your bell as a warning when you get close to a horse - this will startle them. A safer option is to call out ‘bike coming’. This gives the rider a chance to turn their horse’s head to see what is coming behind them before the bike gets close. If you come up behind a horse being ridden on the road rather than the verge, never blast your horn. There are many
reasons a horse and rider may have to be on the road. There may be hazards such as branches or wire hidden in the grass that can entangle a horse’s legs, dangerous holes or a dog that rushes at the boundary fence barking. Roads with blind corners and no verge to safely ride on are particularly unsafe; sometimes the only clear vision of the horse for oncoming traffic is if they are near the centre line. Trucks are noisy. They carry loads that may rattle and their loud brakes can spook many horses. Trucks travelling too fast can create wind draft, which also puts a rider in a dangerous situation. After the truck passes, the wind draft hits trees, bushes or long grass which suddenly wave around and along with swirling leaves, can cause the horse to shy from the side of the road and collide with a following vehicle or throw their rider. Finally, we remind everyone that State Road rules require drivers to obey a horse rider’s request to stop if they are signalling that their horse is agitated. In this potentially dangerous situation, a rider greatly appreciates the prompt cooperation of fellow road users. Simply wait for the rider to be in a safe situation before proceeding. Disobeying these rules is not only a safety issue, it is a fineable offence. We thank you for slowing down, staying alert and potentially saving a life. Deb Shanahan Dayboro Trail Riders
DAYBORO HISTORY Tom Greensill – First Pineapples Grown in the District – 1900 (ca) The first pineapples grown commercially were roughs grown by Tom Greensill on his property at Postmans Track, Kobble Creek about 1900. Almost every Saturday morning when locals gathered at the Post Office to collect their mail, Mrs. Greensill would bring in a cart load of pineapples which she sold for one shilling per dozen when plentiful and one shilling and sixpence when scarce. A 1930 article reported: “Pineapples have been grown in the Dayboro area for several years but it is only during the past two years that any large patches have been planted and the growers are more than satisfied with the result...” Many of the dairy farmers supplemented their income by growing pineapples, quite often with the farmer’s son taking on the role of pineapple grower. Some large plantations were also established locally. Pineapples were delivered to the Roma Street Markets on the back of utilities (all loose). Pineapples were also sent to canneries and in 1947 the C.O.D. Cannery (see note) at Northgate opened with many
growers sending their fruit there. The Roma Street Markets closed in 1964 and then fruit was transported to the Rocklea Markets packed in wooden crates.

DECODED: 75 YEARS OF THE AUSTRALIAN SIGNALS DIRECTORATE An unprecedented glimpse at the history, techniques and future of Australia’s enigmatic signals intelligence and cyber defence agency is the focus of a new exhibition at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. ‘DECODED: 75 years of the Australian Signals Directorate’ (ASD) explores the exploits and achievements of ASD, and the critical work of the organisation in collecting intelligence about foreign adversaries, while keeping Australians and our most critical secrets safe. In 1942, during the Second World War, the Central Bureau was formed. The bureau drew on US Army, Australian army and Royal Australian Air Force intelligence personnel, and the Fleet Radio Unit, Melbourne (FRUMEL), to obtain intelligence by intercepting Japanese military communications. It was an early form of what is now known as ASD. Since that time, ASD has grown and evolved over the subsequent 75 years, being responsible today for foreign signals intelligence, and protective and disruptive cyber operations. The anniversary exhibition offers an interactive game for visitors to work as a team to defeat the cyber criminals, and a central experience that showcases the never-before heard stories of the diverse and skilled staff who work behind the front line to keep Australia safe. As visitors explore the exhibition, they can trigger hidden moments or scan code words to ‘intercept a signal’ and reveal an added layer of storytelling. DECODED: 75 years of the Australian Signals Directorate is at the National Museum of Australia from 1 April until 24 July 2022.

OUT & ABOUT
MAIDEN’S WATTLE Maiden’s wattle (Acacia maidenii) is a fast growing, small tree (either slender or bushy) with fissured bark. As with many wattles, the leaves are replaced by expanded leaf stalks that are dark green and function as leaf blades. In Maiden’s wattle, these phyllodes are long and narrow, slightly sickle-shaped and alternate along the stem. Six centimetre long, pale yellow flower spikes, growing in pairs from leaf axils, appear between late summer and winter. These are followed by tubular seed pods that become highly coiled. The brown seeds are each encircled by an orange strap (aril) which attaches it to the pod. This wattle naturally occurs in coastal and subcoastal regions from Proserpine in Queensland to Orbost in Victoria, where it usually grows in more fertile soils on the edges of rainforests. However, it will grow in a variety of well-drained soils.
This ability to tolerate a range of soil fertility is most likely linked to the nitrogenfixing bacteria that live symbiotically in nodules in roots of all wattles. Although mulching and some watering, particularly in dry periods, is needed for the first year or two, Maiden’s wattle is drought-tolerant once established and can grow in a range of climates in full or partial sun. It will not survive, however, in soils that are prone to water-logging. As an added bonus, it is fire resistant and thus is significant in the regeneration of fire-damaged habitats. Being a small tree, Maiden’s wattle is a good specimen plant for suburban gardens. It is an attractive ornamental or shade tree and is very good in reforestation projects due to its soil nutrient-producing benefits for successive species. It is a wildlife habitat plant. The caterpillar of the common grass yellow butterfly eats the leaves. It attracts both birds which eat the seeds and insects and butterflies which feed on the nectar of the perfumed flowers. Many of these insects are important pollinators of surrounding plants. Find our more at Paten Part Native Nursery. www.ppnn.org.au.

LOCAL NEWS Samford Golden Valley Pony Club SGVPC is very excited to have been named as a grant recipient of the Active Gameday Projects Program, provided recently by the Queensland Government. The Club plans on using the funds, totalling $55,392, to build a brand new, 45cm-1* cross country course for its members. Having access to a course of this level will be a brand new experience for our community, and in particular the north west side of south east Queensland. It will also provide opportunities for the Club to host events and offer training facilities as Brisbane moves towards hosting the Olympic Games in 2032. Former Club member and 2022 Eventing Qld State Elite Squad member James Ferrier has returned to the Club to provide preliminary drawings for the course, and we look forward to working with him further during the project. The Club appreciates and acknowledges the support of Nikki Boyd MP, for her support of our application, together with that of Moreton Bay Regional Council for its support. Next Muster 8am 22nd May.

PINE RIVERS UPDATE Active Game Day Grants I have the pleasure to announce 4 local sporting clubs in Samford received funding from the Palaszczuk Government’s Active Game Day Grants. Active Gameday Project funds will help deliver upgrades that make team sport and recreation experiences more enjoyable. I had the pleasure of visiting these clubs during the week to congratulate them. • Samford Equestrian Group received $150,000 to install lighting around their facility at the Samford Showgrounds. • Samford Valley Pony Club received $55,000 to allow the club to build back better than ever with a Cross Country Course that even includes a water jump. • Samford Archers received $74,00 to install subsurface drainage and upgrade the surface. • Lastly, Samford Stags received $69,000 to install new lighting around the field, helping the club celebrate 50 years in style. This is just one way the Palaszczuk Government is supporting our local clubs and assisting with local Covid-19 Economic Recovery Plans. Congratulations to all these clubs and the hard working committee members and volunteers who have put so much effort into securing these exciting upgrades. Small Business Supports The Palaszczuk Government’s Basic Business Grants have re-opened. The Business Basics grants program provides support to businesses to increase core skills and adopt best practice. This support
includes funded activities in 5 priorities: Training and coaching, Website build or upgrades, Professional business advice, Strategic marketing services, Business continuity and succession. You can apply for the grants at: https://www.business.qld.gov. au/starting-business/advice-support/grants/ business-basics-grant. The Palaszczuk Labor Government has made the Queensland Small Business Commissioner (QSBC) officially a permanent independent statutory body. The Small Business Commissioner’s office is available for referrals for small businesses struggling to negotiate their commercial lease, advocacy, and mediating disputes. Since May 2020, the Commissioner’s office has carried out more than 7000 activities to assist small business, commercial tenants and landlords including dispute resolutions, providing advice, and advocating on small businesses behalf. They have been able to resolve 66% of the commercial lease disputes they receive, relieving the financial and mental stress placed on small business owners. The Queensland Small Business Commissioner also provides a range of support for government to better work with small businesses including the Small Business Friendly Council program, and workshops for how small businesses can prepare better grant applications. Businesses can access the Small Business Commissioner’s office at: https://www. business.qld.gov.au/running-business/ support-assistance/qsbc.
