WARNING: FOOT AND MOUTH ON OUR DOORSTEP For over 130 years, Australia has been free of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease, which affects all clovenfooted animals (‘split hooves’), such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpacas, llamas, deer, camels and buffalo. The disease is now on our doorstep, with confirmed cases in Indonesia and the popular tourist destination of Bali. The risk or ‘estimate of likelihood’ of FMD entering Australia is currently at 12% and if it does, it will have catastrophic economic and social implications for our country - and our local community. According to Dr Malcolm Heath of UQVets at Dayboro, the most likely location of an outbreak of FMD disease will not be out west on a large cattle station. It will be a peri-urban area like Samford or Dayboro. Someone will unwittingly bring back a contaminated meat product from their overseas holiday. If the scraps from that contaminated product are thrown to an animal, then we have FMD. A veterinarian and large animal expert, Dr Heath and his wife Jane, also a veterinarian, were in the United
Kingdom during the FMD outbreak of 2001 and know only too well the horrors of the disease and the impact that it can have on all involved. He is genuinely concerned about FMD and its consequences for our community. He strongly recommends that people refrain from feeding food scrapes to cloven-footed animals, especially pigs, and especially scrapes that contain meat products. This includes illegally imported/ incorrectly prepared sausage, ham, salami and other meat products which might be in a sandwich. “Thrown to pigs or other susceptible animals, it would be an easy way to get FMD started in our country,” said Dr Heath. For an agricultural trading nation such as Australia, FMD would have a significant impact on our economy, estimated at $80

billion. A FMD outbreak would also result in devastating social consequences. The widespread loss of income for our farmers and others that work in the agricultural sector and related industries would be significant, as would the psychological trauma associated with the FMD control measures that would be mandatorily implemented. If one animal is detected with the disease, it would instigate the culling and euthanasia of all cloven-footed animals located both on the infected property, and on suspect properties within a wide designated geographical area. According to the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Honourable Murray Watt, the absolute number one priority is to keep FMD out of Australia. Every person that owns cloven-footed animals must: • have a bio-security plan in place, irrespective of the size of the property or the number of animals; • be aware of the clinical signs of FMD; • diligently monitor their animals on a daily basis; and • immediately report any concerns to their local Vet and contact the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888. WIND-RESISTANT TREES? Many large trees were brought down in our district during the strong westerly winds that followed the deluge of rain in May and a resident asked The Village Pump if there are ‘wind-resistant trees’. This proved to be a very tricky question, sparking much debate, but we believe the short answer to that question is ‘no’, especially if the ground is totally sodden and resembles thick soup. In these extreme conditions, almost any tree could topple! However, there are a few characteristics of trees to consider when planning your garden, particularly in areas prone to strong winds: • Trees with open foliage, such as sheoaks, are likely to withstand strong winds better than those with dense foliage. They also help to break up and slow down the wind flow. • In general, coastal species are likely to be more wind tolerant. Look for species that grow right on the coast but range inland too. • Deep-rooted trees are likely to do better in strong winds than shallowrooted ones (eg. native hibiscus are very prone to blowing over). Check with your nursery about root structure when buying trees. Page 2 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 05 AUGUST 2022
NEXT SDPPA MEETING Wednesday 17th August 2022 Samford Community Hub (SCHUB). 7pm start. All welcome. Further information: secretary@samfordprogress.org.au. Lower growing trees are less likely to fall over than tall ones. • Trees with a ‘lollipop shape’ (long trunk with foliage at the top, such as Kauri Pine or Bumpy Ash) are more likely to blow over than those with foliage retained closer to the ground, such as Hoop Pine. The way you lay out the trees in your garden is also very important. Trees planted on a westerly or southerly aspect are likely to cop a heavy battering when the westerlies roar through. Consider planting a windbreak on the south-west side of your yard. Counter-intuitively, this should not be a solid wall of vegetation (eg. tall hedge), because this creates severe wind turbulence behind it. Instead, use a range of sizes of plants, perhaps beginning with grasses and small shrubs in front, with larger shrubs and small trees behind, with a row of taller trees (if required) to complete the windbreak. Leave some small gaps in the break and use a mix of open foliaged and denser foliaged species. None of this will guarantee that trees won’t fall in severe conditions, but it may give a better chance of reducing the impact of winds in your garden. •

WARNING: FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE ON OUR DOORSTEP Continued from front page
How can we stop FMD entering Australia? We all play a part because the virus can be carried in contaminated meat and dairy products and can survive in foods that are frozen, chilled or freeze-dried. Do not bring any food or animal-based products back into Australia. It is also carried and can remain active for several days on untreated hides and on people’s clothing, footwear, luggage and items of equipment. Ensure arrival declarations are accurate and that footwear is properly sanitized, or better still, left behind in the country of departure. What about vaccinations? Our vaccination bank is held in the UK. The current Government position is that vaccinations will not be used unless absolutely necessary, because using vaccines will significantly reduce our export capabilities. How can we stop the spread? This disease is highly contagious and will spread rapidly in expired air, secretions, and excretions from an infected animal, including milk and manure. Transmission occurs readily when animals are near each other at watering troughs, feeding points, in stockyards, milking sheds or just resting together in a paddock. Early clinical signs of FMD include: • Poor appetite, lethargy, salivation and lameness. • A rise in body temperature may occur and vesicles may appear inside the animal’s mouth on the tongue, cheeks, gums, lips and palate. The vesicles are initially small but enlarge quickly and can reach up to 30mm or more in diameter before they rupture. • Frothy saliva around the animal’s mouth.
•
Vesicles can also form between the claws of the feet and along the coronary band. • Monitoring symptoms and implementing our bio-security plans is essential. DO NOT ENTRE PROPERTIES WHERE ANIMALS ARE GRAZING. The disease can spread on contaminated equipment and vehicles, and via people on their clothing and shoes. It is imperative that members of the public comply with individual farm biosecurity requirements and refrain from entering, either on foot or in a vehicle, any property upon which cloven-footed animals graze, or which has a biosecurity sign posted on the property gate or fence, unless permission is sought from the property owner. What will happen if there is a FMD outbreak? The response will be conducted in accordance with the Australian Veterinary Emergency Plan or AusVet Plan, which will control and rapidly eradicate the disease so that Australia can re-establish its FMD-free status. These objectives are achieved by: • immediate quarantine of suspected cases; • control of movement of all livestock and cloven-footed pets; • stamping out (destruction) of infected animals and those that are susceptible (reside on the same property and possibly properties within several kilometres of the infected property); • tracing of people and equipment that reside on the properties or have visited the affected properties during
the preceding weeks; and • surveillance to detect new outbreaks. According to local stud cattle breeder, Bronwyn Betts of Nindethana Droughtmasters, reading the AusVet Plan is like reading a horror story. “The consequences of this disease would be nothing short of devastating and would touch every corner of the community. As soon as a diagnosis of FMD is made, an immediate national livestock standstill will be implemented and will remain in force for a minimum of 72 hours,” she said. During this time, infected properties will be identified and a ‘restricted area’ of no less than three kilometres will be established around that property to ensure containment. “All animals on the infected property will be destroyed, irrespective of whether they have clinical signs of the disease. They are deemed to be ‘susceptible animals’ and as such present a high risk of having contracted the disease and ultimately spreading it.” Subject to a comprehensive risk assessment, animals on neighbouring properties and within the restricted area may also be destroyed. This destruction will apply to both production animals and cloven-footed family pets. Beyond the restricted zone, a control zone is established, and this area is much larger and could potentially capture the entire local Government area. Bronwyn is urging members of our community to be aware of FMD, how it could enter Australia, how easily it could spread and how it will be managed if it does. “I urge all landowners, especially those that own cloven-hoofed animals and pets, to be prepared and to ensure that their bio-security plans are up-to-date. If they don’t have a plan, contact their local Vet for assistance to develop one now.”

LOCAL NEWS Local Archer Sets New Zealand Record at International Games Local archer Elizabeth Randle stayed on point at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, scoring a New Zealand record and ranking 8th place out of 24 women compounders. The New Zealand national has represented her country in archery since 2010, starting in youth events and now competing in the open division. In total, she has competed in 12 international events. The World Games is staged every four years, supported by the International Olympic Committee. This year marks the 11th edition of the multisport event which features barebow and recurve field archery and compound target archery competitions. This year saw 3,600 athletes from 106 countries participate at the games. Elizabeth shot 699 points out of 720 points, which saw her claim the New Zealand record. “This score also helped teammate, Riku Van Tonder and I rank 8th in the mixed teams event,” Elizabeth said.
“We then competed against the top ranked mixed team from India who we shot our best match against, but we lost by one point. The team finished in 6th place.” Upon moving to Queensland in 2019, Elizabeth was keen to join our very own local archery club. “I joined Samford Valley Target Archers to have the opportunity to train with some of the best archers in Australia such as Scott Brice. He has helped me a lot with event preparations,” Elizabeth said. “The club has very good facilities and is very supportive of everyone in the target archery sport,” she said. Elizabeth’s experience of Samford life so far has been right on target. “Living in the Samford area gives us the property space we wanted but also is close to everything we need,” she said. The World Games features over 30 unique, multi-disciplinary sports including korfball, finswimming, lifesaving and orienteering. This year’s games raised funds to donate $54,000 to support athletes and sports in Ukraine.

Marj Fathers Tribute Many were the wonderful qualities of Marj, a world traveller and an active citizen of Samford and Districts, but I will limit myself to two occasions where Marj made a difference. She persuaded the Progress Association (SDPPA) to move its meetings from the school to the Farmers Hall in 1986. This exposed the needs of the hall which the Progress Association took up as a project for the 1988 Bicentennial and the restored hall opened in 1993.
Tanya Hall
We ran into a spot of Treasurer bother at the time, when the Progress Association depended on recycling money from the tip and advertising from the volunteer run Village Pump. Marj took on the Treasurer’s job and the Progress Assoc decided to pay the Editor, Treasurer and advertising lady which has given us the professional and polished Village Pump of today. Typically, Marj did not take the money but remained as Treasurer of the Association. She set a fashion in train, as all the local halls followed the Farmers Hall example - all were brought up to date. The Farmers Hall dictated the new standard of development in the developing village when water came in 1991 and sewerage three years later. When Marj joined our executive team, she completed the best and most productive committee I have ever served on. David Bannerman SDPPA President 1987 – 1990
LOCAL NEWS VALE MARJ FATHERS Many in our Samford Valley and beyond are mourning the passing of community champion Marj Fathers of Camp Mountain, aged 93. Marj and her late husband Royce, gave much of their time to various community associations within the Samford area, from which later generations continue to benefit. While Marj was in hospital for a spinal operation in 1953, Royce bought a Casket Ticket which raised funds for the hospital and it won the first prize of five-thousand pounds, allowing them to buy a condemned dairy farm in Camp Mountain the following year. Through great effort, they got the farm up and running after being given a six-month timeframe to do so by the Milk Board. Marj was a fast learner at farm work but found that she suffered from numerous related allergies. In the early 1960s, Royce, supported by Marj, was one of the foundation members of The United Milk Producers Co-operative Association Limited (known as ‘the Co-Op’). Marj and Royce sent their eldest son to Camp Mountain School at an early age to help with numbers to keep the school open, however the school closed shortly afterwards. The two eldest children, Graham and Linda, then rode to Samford State School on their horse, or hitched a ride part of the way on the milk truck, then walked across the paddocks to the school. Tragically, Marj & Royce’s third child, Jeffrey, died before his second birthday; their fourth child, Ken, was born soon after. By 1972, Marj and Royce changed their farming focus to cattle, but, only two years later, Royce died suddenly at the age of just 48. Royce had also been heavily involved in community work, as a fundraiser on the Samford School Committee and as a volunteer firefighter. He also gave his time to successfully challenge a quarry application in Camp Mountain and was part of the resultant formation of (what is now called) the Samford and District Progress and Protection Association (SDPPA). After Royce’s death, Marj needed to return to work. A trained teacher, her years away from the classroom meant that Marj had to find a different line of employment, so she started as an assistant at the Samford Post Office where she remained until her retirement. Marj was a member of the SDPPA where she served as Treasurer and was also a member of the editorial committee for The Village Pump.
In 1984, Marj became secretary for the newly-formed Samford District Historical Museum Society, a busy position she held for 22 years. In 2001, she was awarded the society’s honoured Life Membership during the official opening of the museum’s Blacksmith Shop. Among her many contributions to the museum, Marj made and iced a celebration cake for the Museum’s 20th Anniversary and the launch of “Samford Reminiscences Vol. 5” in 2006 and, over many years, took photographs of the museum’s many activities. Marj was involved with the Incapacitated Servicemen’s Association (ISA) and in 1993 became the Patron of Northern Metropolitan Branch. She was later awarded life membership for her unending efforts to help those struggling with life after serving their country. Part of her role involved organising day trips and annual getaways, connecting, educating and providing a moment of relaxation for members. In 1996 she received the SDPPA’s Community Award at the ‘Christmas in the Village’ celebration which was organised annually by the SDPPA. In 2001, Marj received the International Year of
Volunteers Silver Medallion Award and, when nominating Marj for a 2011 Ferny Grove Community Champions Award, the museum described Marj as – “Having many talents - cooking, jam-making, upholstering chairs, organising displays and with undying energy and generosity - she is a true champion”. Marj also worked with the Samford Red Cross for 20 years, assisting at the Blood Bank. She was well known for her cake and jam-making which graced many stalls to raise funds for the various associations with which she was involved, including Meals on Wheels. At the end of 2000, Marj sold most of her farm, retaining the family home and five acres which she took great joy in landscaping. In 2002, Dr EN Marks bequeathed her property in Samford freehold for ecological and educational purposes. Marj assisted the executors to decide on the most suitable beneficiary. Queensland University of Technology was chosen and Marj attended the open days for the Samford Environmental Research Facility (SERF) over the next decade to listen to their achievements and to give advice from the Samford community. Marj’s discernment and personal interest in the future of Samford guided the executors in achieving this successful outcome. After a lifetime of achievements and many significant contributions to her community, Marj will be remembered by all who knew her, as a knowledgeable, hardworking and generous person who gave her time willingly for the benefit of others and she will be missed by many in our community. Tanya Hall, Samford Museum and the Fathers family
The SDPPA acknowledges and thanks Marj Fathers for her contribution to the Association and to this community. It is the commitment of volunteers like Marj that make this community great.

LOCAL NEWS
How many Anglicans does it take to change a lightbulb? Change, who said anything about change? In fact, change is just about the only constant in the universe and even then, the rate of change seems to be constantly increasing. Over the past couple of years our lives have seen the dramatic change brought about by the pandemic with its mandated measure to keep the spread from stretching our medical facilities beyond breaking point. Our own community has changed, and we see building projects and proposed landscaping changing the appearance of a one-time sleepy village. Change is indeed constant. Since Christmas, St Paul’s has had its Sunday service at 8am instead of the 7:30am and 9am timeslots prior to that. This has suited some but not others. At a recent Parish Council meeting we continued the discussion on service times. From 7 August we will trial a return to 7:30am and 9:00am. The 7:30am will be a said service without

hymns and the 9am service will be a sung service with hymns. We may throw in a said service with hymns along the way. It is difficult to gauge how the time impacts an individual’s ability to attend. So many other factors have been at play throughout the year. Unseasonal rain and continued COVID outbreaks have had an impact. After 18 September we will make our decision on how we proceed. Our aim is to find a solution that both meets individual needs and allows us to grow as a worshipping community. Please let us know your thoughts and feelings on this. Visit us as part of SEGT! Millen Farm is excited to again be part of the Samford Edible Garden Trail local initiative. We are open to ticket holders this weekend (6 & 7 August) both days 9am - 3pm. There’ll be market stalls with plants and seedlings, locally grown produce, a picnic area and on-site coffee van to enjoy. Saturday: Education garden tours and observation of farmers harvesting their produce. Sunday: Education garden and Farm tours. We hope to see many locals there!
OUT & ABOUT
LET THE TRAIL BEGIN! Our third ever Samford Edible Garden Trail is about to kick off and we are eagerly waiting to showcase 11 amazing edible food gardens right here in the Samford region. This year we are very fortunate to have an even broader range and variety of gardens to share (six new open gardens plus some of last year’s favourites) which you can now plan to visit over a leisurely two days. From small abundant plantings, such as those at the ‘Live, Work & Grow Garden’ right in the heart of the Village, and the ‘Water Saving Wicking-Beds Garden’ (Samford Valley) to the orchards and rotation beds you can view at the ‘Productive Italian Garden’ (Samford Valley), there is inspiration in spades for budding and established gardeners alike (intended puns galore here!). Check out all the gardens beforehand at www.samfordediblegardentrail.com.au to plan your weekend. Please note that some gardens will only be open on the Saturday or Sunday, not both days. Your new (and improved!) Trail Guide, which ticket holders have already received via email, has all relevant information for this task. Our aims are threefold. Firstly, we love promoting the idea of backyards brimming with edibles and everyone enjoying that special feeling of growing, then picking and eating food straight from the garden. It is a special pleasure we can all enjoy! Secondly, we have local producers right here in the Samford region and we aim to support them through sharing information
and encouraging people to buy locally grown produce. Thirdly, we love Samford, so promoting our region as sustainable, a place that values locally produced food supported by our amazing community, is perhaps the easiest aim of all. Did you know we have four cafes in Samford joining us in promoting locally grown food this weekend too? The Latin Shack are again creating a delicious trail pizza (they sold out last year), Little Tree Bake & Brew House are back for seconds, serving up a seasonal soup from local ingredients, and The Famous Samford Patisserie have been inspired and will have a variety of sweet treats featuring local produce. And for those wanting a sweet treat of the icy kind, Samford Gelato is whipping up two special local flavours to tantalise your taste buds. Why not drop in and show your support for them? The SEGT team are looking forward to seeing you all this weekend! Thanks to Community Bank Samford for their sponsorship of the tours again this year! Samford Edible Garden Trail is an initiative of the SDPPA.

You have told Council that you want to maintain the identity and character of your neighbourhood and the region as the population grows. The current survey allows you to expand on this and provide more detail about whether you would like to see new modern buildings or heritage buildings, if you would like to see a diversity of housing choices and if you want a vibrant main street in your neighbourhood providing shops, cafes and restaurants? The survey also asks questions around what you like about the neighbourhood you currently live in, is it friendly, appealing and community minded? There are so many factors to take into consideration when planning for the future of our region and I encourage everyone to provide feedback on your views. OUT & ABOUT
Natalie Ross - Café Lagarto While visiting a café is usually driven by a desire for good food, it’s also a chance to carve out a slice of tranquillity. Nestled in the Lifestyle Centre Samford, lunchtime doesn’t get more serene than ordering a meal at Café Lagarto. We spoke to café owner Natalie Ross about creating a familyfriendly venue that nurtures local art.
Page 8 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 05 AUGUST 2022
What was your main reason for opening a family-friendly cafe? I’d had another business at The Lifestyle Centre for 6 years and watched the progress of the existing cafe from our windows as it changed hands three times. During that 6 years, I’d been running the canteen at my son’s rugby club as a volunteer and discovered a true love for hospitality, catering for people and organising events. When the previous owners decided to sell the cafe at the same time as my son decided to stop playing for that rugby club, one thing led to another. I’ve been delighted to work with a wonderful team of staff along with the landlords and see the cafe finally reaching its full potential. How do you like to support local artists? I love art. Music, photography, painting – all things creative. During COVID we took over the lease in the back rooms of the cottage adjacent to our usual seating. We ended up hosting a series of exhibitions by local artists. It was so special to be a part of facilitating the first exhibitions for a number of these artists and to have their beautiful works gracing the cottage walls. Cafe Lagarto has hosted live music on Sunday mornings since before we owned the venue. More recently, our music hosting has grown to see us developing into a live jazz music venue, hosting the talented Leena Salim,
and Danny Mose - both local musicians who perform on alternate months (last Saturday of each month). We hope to incorporate additional jazz musos in 2023 and may also host the occasional extra special live music event. Can you tell us more about your internationally-themed dinner events? This was an idea that I saw working quite well during one of the previous owner’s stints, when the cafe was called The Rare Pear. I always planned to bring it back, and it’s doing so well. Every month, our clever chefs create a 3-course dinner menu with a different culinary theme each month. Sometimes we repeat popular cuisines, but we still have so many more cuisines to experiment with! It’s a great opportunity for the chefs to play with different flavours and foods, for the customers to experience new things - and sometimes even experience that flavour from ‘back home’. The dinners are on the second Friday of every month. Tanya Hall

new skills, we have raised funds for local women, women affected by domestic abuse, women and families in remote areas both in Queensland and internationally. We helped with the Land Army in World War II and also sewed camouflage nets. We established best practice for women living in remote locations. Women from all walks of life have become members of the QCWA. They have joined for a variety of reasons - from friendship to helping others, to learning and following rural family traditions. QCWA has been actively helping others since its beginning and our own Branch reflects the history of those times. In the past 58 years, Samford branch has grown to nearly 50 members, not only from Samford but also from surrounding suburbs of Eatons Hill, The Gap and Ferny Hills. Samford is not isolated geographically as it was, but it still provides fellowship, just as in 1922 when QCWA began. As historian Kathleen Cummings wrote, “Over the years the Branch has managed to carry through to the current group of happy hardworking and caring ladies.” The same applies today, eight years since

Kath published Fifty Years of Fun and Friendship. Now, the Samford Branch enjoys 58 years of the same parallels as the wider State CWA. What we have done and continue to do right here is Samford is happening all over the State. Our motto and aim has always been, and remains, to improve the welfare and conditions of women and children in the country. Well done QCWA! Over the last month we’ve had our Annual General Meeting and other get togethers. Congratulations and thank you to Lilah for her work as Secretary. As her term finishes, we welcome and thank Franca for taking on this volunteer role. Division President, Sue complimented us all on our fabulous Samford teamwork and we know that Franca will be ably assisted. Thank you also to Estelle for being Hall convenor for the last four years. Lilah has now stepped into this role, taking your enquiries about hall hire. Many thanks to members who prepared food for our AGM. You never fail to help when asked to ‘bring a plate’ and attend. Our next monthly meeting is Wednesday 17th August at 10am. Visitors most welcome. Join us, make friends and help us support this community and improve the lives of people living in regional, rural and remote Queensland. QCWA Samford caters for small to medium group functions and other special occasions. Get in touch with Fiona on 0421 353 272. We look forward to welcoming you to our 100 year celebration on 11 August. You can also take a look at our refurbished kitchen, flooring and painting - we’re pretty proud of it! Marnie

LOCAL NEWS Samford Creativity Gains Regional Recognition Local artists have been in the regional spotlight recently, drawing attention to the creative heart of Samford. Andrew Todd was another resident finalist in the Moreton Bay Art Awards, highlighting how art contributes to the community’s greater sense of identity. “The Moreton Bay Art Awards are extremely important for our region especially for the Valley’s creatives. It allows more exposure to various local creative artists and art making,” Andrew said. “The Samford region has so many diverse and talented creative artists practising, which encourages a real sense of community and identity to the region.” This is the second time Andrew was a finalist in the Moreton Bay Art Awards, after entering a digital photographic still life titled “Burbs to the Passage” in 2019. This year, Andrew reached the finals for his photographic mixed media collage work, “The Land”. “My artwork centres around my relationship with landscape and abandoned relics from the past, such as car bodies and old cottages,” he said. “This particular work focuses on creating new narratives through reworking imagery using a variety of mixed media montage and collage. It seeks to capture a landscape of conversations around humour and opinions.” Andrew describes his journey as an artist as one of patience, as he has prioritised his profession as an art educator until now. “Now is the time for me to focus more on my art creation and further develop my artistic capabilities,” he said. “My practice is very much focused around film and digital photography along with paint and mixed media portraiture and landscape.” Andrew is working towards a local exhibition in the near future, and also plans to enter the Brisbane Portrait Prize as well as taking part in other upcoming local exhibitions. LOCAL NEWS Samford Museum EKKA EXHIBITS When the banana industry was decimated by bunchy top disease, dairying became the dominate industry in and around Samford Valley. From Samford Museum’s collection we take a look at photos and information relating to two prominent dairy stud farmers and their exhibits at Brisbane EKKA. John N Scott of Camp Mountain’s Auchen Eden Ayrshire stud exhibited for the first time in 1929. A comment John made that day while holding his bull was, “I only got second today, but I’ll be back and win a champion here someday.” This he did for more than 50 years. Kevin Hickey of “Limerick” Bunya exhibited Friesians. His notable awards included that for his cow Limerick Lady Melba. Melba was the Champion All Breed Production cow in Queensland in 1973, 1974, 1975. This feat earned her a place in the Australian Guinness Book of Records. Samford Bowls Club Vale Mr. Kenneth Miller It has been a sad week for the members of the Samford Bowls Club as we farewell another of our members. Ken came to the club in April 2018 to learn the game of lawn bowls and had his first lesson early May. He loved it and was soon playing many times per week. Ken was a man of few words but was endeared by all. He undertook the necessary paperwork to assist Alison behind the bar and was a regular at this job for all club functions. He played in club competitions and represented Samford in the Vets competition. Condolence to Ken’s family and friends. He will be fondly remembered.

Samford Support Network Working together to help local community members On 12th July we celebrated the life of Shirley Deeth, a very special person to the Samford Support Network. Shirley was the reason we started this network in the first place. She needed a tree to be cut down on her property. At the time, we were the Samford Elderly Support Network and were made up of only a handful of people. We were all enthusiastic to help, but cutting a tree was just a bit too big for us, especially without any insurance. We couldn’t help out with this task; however it was the inspiration behind getting our insurance organised. Shirley and her husband temporarily left Samford to go to a nursing home. She returned some years later to reside at the Samford Retirement Village, sadly alone as her beloved husband had passed. Upon her return she reached out to me (Barb), uncertain if she would be remembered, however how could we forget such an inspiring, wonderful energetic person as Shirley!! Within days we visited and she was back in what had grown to a network with much more services then before. Shirley loved our outings whether they were our social outings on Friday, or other outings such as the Samford Show. She loved cars and had a special relationship with them. One year the Samford Show kindly invited the SSN to attend and it was this year that Shirley found herself sitting in a vintage car that she had herself owned many years earlier. Her joy just made my day! Shirley was always positive and uplifting. She always had beautiful classical music playing, lots of books and a well-behaved cocker spaniel. Truly a person with amazing life wisdom. Some people touch your heart in a unique way and Shirley was one of those people for me. Shirley Deeth you will be greatly missed by many in our community! OUT & ABOUT DO YOU SUFFER FROM “TEXT NECK”? Have you ever wondered what happens to your neck when you look down at your phone or computer for extended periods of time? Did you know that the weight of your head is about the same as a bowling ball (4.5-5.5kg)? When you look down at a device it can place over 20kg of force on your neck (imagine that bowling ball being held up by a broomstick). As you can imagine, this can not only cause pain but long term postural changes.
So, what are the symptoms for text neck? It usually starts off as a mild ache in the neck or upper back, but may also be experienced as a sharp pain or stiffness in these regions. Other symptoms may also include visible poor posture (forward head carriage and hunched/rolled forward shoulders), chronic headaches, upper back pain or stiffness and shoulder pain. If this posture is not addressed, the resultant forward head carriage and hunched shoulders may progressively worsen over time, leading to pain and reduced mobility
of the neck, upper back and shoulders. Here are some tips to reduce the effects of text neck, including: • Limit the use of phones/tablets to necessary tasks and take frequent breaks (setting an alarm as a reminder is often useful!). • Improve posture/ergonomics while using technology. An example of this is holding the device up at eye level so the head is not flexed forward. • Be mindful of overall posture - try to keep the body aligned and in a neutral position. Tucking your chin in and pulling back shoulders will help with this. • Perform specific exercises and stretches that target the neck, chest and upper back to counteract postural changes caused by text neck. • Visit a chiropractor to have any postural changes assessed and provide treatment as necessary. OUT & ABOUT What Are Joey Scouts About? You may have heard of Joey Scouts but are not quite sure what they are. Being a Joey Scout means you are between the ages of 5 and 8 years and part of the world-wide Scouting movement. Joey Scouts is all about, fun, the outdoors, friends, adventure and doing your best. There are some very specific outcomes that scouting and our group try to provide to every Joey Scout, from personal growth
through adventure, caring for ourselves and others, the opportunity to do your best and become a contributor to the world around you. In the next few weeks, we have vacancies opening in this section as our older Joey Scouts transition up to Cub Scouts. We are looking for families who would like to embark on this amazing journey together; parents who enjoy adventure and are looking to hang out more with their kids and doing something a little bit different and exciting. Most Scout Leaders are parents just like you who have taken the step to do some additional training and commit a small amount of their time to running the program. Anyone over the age of 18 can become a Leader, and a well-functioning group depends on a constant refresh of leaders in all sections. The more leaders we have, the less work falls on any one person, the more fun it is and the more likely others will become leaders too. If your son or daughter would like to come along for a no obligation visit to Joey Scouts, please email joeys@samford. scoutsqld.com.au, call 3040 6400, or visit our website: www.samfordscouts.com.au Judith Brumler (Kaa)

Small Business in Samford Valley – Opportunities Everywhere! The Samford & Districts Chamber of Commerce Networking Breakfast on Wednesday 10th August at the Samford Community HUB will feature not one, but two guests who have different messages for the local business community. Chamber member Margaret Aspin has started and grown several small businesses since 2004 in industries including IT hosting services, multimedia design, consulting and edutech. Prior to becoming a business owner, Margaret worked in the federal government on a project unlocking opportunities for small business, and this started her journey. Margaret has been a small business mentor in the Small Business Solutions, TAFE Qld Build a Better Business program for seven years. Since moving to Dayboro over 18 months ago, she has been working extensively with all kinds of small businesses across Moreton Bay and discovered that the Samford Valley has amazing opportunities and a great growth future for micro and small businesses. Our second guest will be Lesleigh Wagner, who will be working as the go-to representative on behalf of both the Samford & Districts Chamber of Commerce and the Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce, in providing support and direction as the Moreton Money campaign expands within the business community. (See Pg 29) With a background of professional and communication skills, Lesleigh has the ability to interact with business community stakeholders at all levels. Her background includes sales, marketing and management experience over a variety of small and large businesses. Her on-the-ground knowledge as a former resident of the Samford Valley will greatly assist with understanding the requirements of the business community members in the Samford and Dayboro precincts. Why don’t you join us? Head to www.samfordchamber.com to learn more and book.
TRASH CAN BE TREASURE REFUSE TO WASTE Even though it’s more than 40 years since I arrived from a land where the postman shoves your mail through a hole in your front door, I’m still fascinated by the ingenuity and artistry displayed in many of the bespoke letterboxes on Australian country roads. Especially delightful to me is the creation of something both fanciful and functional from bits and pieces that might otherwise be chucked away: disused milk churns, cogs and gears and pistons from long dead tractors, gravity defying chains, once loved tin toy trucks, even old whitegoods – anything goes. Old stuff, artfully worked to “spark joy” in neighbours and total strangers. Surely, everything (and I mean every thing) has value if we can only see wherein it lies. It amazes me, on my visits to my local recycling centre at Bunya, to see the useful things that people have simply thrown away, especially on the scrap metal pile. Things that someone, somewhere, can use as-is, or as raw material for something different. But here it is – a kid’s bike, some
sections of pool fencing, a heavy chain, an old sewing machine – not in an op shop or at the tip shop where someone else can find a bargain, but here on this pile of metal to be crushed. Nowadays you can’t just take home that lawn mower that just needs a new spark plug, or the wheelbarrow with a flat but not punctured tyre, or the bird cage that would keep the bush turkeys away from your newly planted saplings, or the fencing your neighbour could turn into a garden setting.
than shiny new stuff; you can put your feet on it for a start, and it won’t be catastrophic if you spill your tea on it! But I think there’s a deeper appeal. Old objects are layered visibly and invisibly with the events and experiences they’ve been through; and those layers are what gives them so much more character – just like people, really! In these times of realising what we have taken for granted isn’t quite working anymore, and having to rethink our cherished values, it’s good to see this revived interest in being conservative with our resources and more caring with our residues; to think a little more carefully about how what we use and how we use it might affect others, now and in the future. We could all do better, and benefit from it. We might also encourage our elected representatives to think even harder about how they can help us to prepare a brighter future for our kids and their kids. Check out the possibilities on the MoretonCAN website www.moretoncan.net/what-you-can-do.
Happily, interesting artefacts made from old stuff has made a comeback in some of our cafés and homes. That retro style is so much more comfortable and comforting

Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing Heather Streatfeild has joined our studio and will be taking the three Reformer classes and one Beginners Mat class on Thursday mornings. There is one space in the 8am Reformer class and the last space in the Beginners Mat class is still available at the time of writing. Heather is a “Full studio” Pilates instructor. This means she is able to work with all the Pilates equipment and utilise the full repertoire of Mat work in her classes. Heather has been instructing for 5 years and brings a quiet confidence to all her clients. We look forward to working more with Heather as time goes on and increasing the class times we have available under her instruction. Our one on one classes have become increasingly popular. We work with a wide range of clients. Personal trainers needing to have time to work out for themselves, sports people needing to reduce injury and also those who require gentle maintenance or have specific physical or pathological needs. Using all the varying Pilates exercises and equipment is a marvellous way to enjoy rejuvenating and maintaining a healthy body. In turn, this uplifts our minds and therefore we attain a greater sense of wellbeing. For further information Contact Dorothy on 0432 269 472.

OUT & ABOUT The last few months have been a busy time for our dance group as we’ve prepared to perform at the Medieval Festival. We had a great time learning the dances and creating medieval outfits especially for the day. Now we’re back to regular classes where we enjoy a mix of historical, Anglo-Celtic, and bush dances. In August we’re extending a special invitation for beginners and anyone who would like to try it out. You don’t need a costume or a partner as most of our dances are for groups, rather than couple dances. It doesn’t matter if you have two left feet, but it is useful to know your right hand from your left. In October we’re holding a Regency Dance Weekend which features a Jane Austen Ball. Once again, we are proud to be part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Healthy and Active program. Join us for a welcome to new dancers in the Farmers Hall, 30 Main Street, Samford at 7:30pm on Friday 12th & 26th August. $4.00 includes tea & cake! Samford Area Mens Shed The Moreton Bay Regional Council conduct and fund a grants initiative called the Local Community Support Grant Scheme. Grants awarded by this scheme provide funding to community organisations for support of local community, cultural, sporting and environmental projects and initiatives that demonstrate a benefit to the Moreton Bay Region. Funded projects provide opportunities for people to develop and enjoy a vibrant lifestyle as part of a strong and inclusive local community. Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS) were recently successful in obtaining a grant which has allowed SAMS to purchase a broad range of metalworking tools and equipment. This grant will allow members, not only to broaden their activities and provide them with greater satisfaction from their achievement, but also enhance their health, self-worth and wellbeing.
SAMS was also successful in receiving a grant under the Councils Community Facilities Grants Scheme. This scheme provides funding to community organisations in the Moreton Bay Region to develop new community facilities or improve existing community facilities. This grant funding will help SAMS meet the planned total cost of improving facilities in the Shed. Those Improvements will include the installation of a hot water dispenser in the kitchen, a hand dryer and soap dispenser in the washroom and ceiling fans in the meeting and social area of the Shed. All of the men are grateful for the funds that Moreton Bay Regional Council has granted to SAMS. Men of Samford and surrounds, why not to come along and see what SAMS is all about. Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. Oral Health Therapists Priya and Sarah, with our amazing
Dental Spa Experience EMS AIRFLOW
Our Oral Health Therapist’s Priya and Sarah value your ORAL HEALTH as well as your GENERAL HEALTH and are here to help. We believe it’s important to take an integrated approach to overall health – healthy mouth, healthy body – all contribute to a healthier you!
How is Oral Health & Gut Health linked? A build-up of harmful biofilm on the surface of your teeth and gums cause gum disease. Gum disease creates an imbalance in the mouth’s normally healthy microbiome. This in turn creates a harmful biofilm build up which can then be ingested and travel to the gut. The gut is usually tough, however prolonged exposure will eventually disrupt a healthy microbiome. A weakened and inflammed gut is much more susceptible to other diseases.
How can Admire Dentistry help? Regular professional clean with AIRFLOW® technology!
How is Oral Health and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) linked? A healthy mouth, can help against COVID-19. The mouth acts as an entry point for COVID-19. Poor oral hygiene results in harmful biofilm build up, which has been found to increase the chance of bacteria travelling from the mouth to the lungs. While COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory illness, evidence is suggesting gut health also plays a role. Recent research is showing that poor gut microbiome may influence the severity of COVID-19.
Our trusted Oral Health Therapists are very knowledgeable and highly trained in using the EMS AIRFLOW® to remove the harmful biofilm that causes poor oral health, and therefore contributes to poor general health. AIRFLOW® is the only technology that removes this harmful biofilm from inaccessible areas of the mouth in a minimally invasive way.

co-founders, Alison and Jan Schutt, were unable to find somewhere to donate their children’s excess and used school stationery items. With 30 plus drop off locations across South East Queensland, including at Belle Property Samford, volunteers for Stationery Aid collect, sort, clean, renew and donate used and unused education resources in the form of yearly school stationery and booklists for disadvantaged students to start the school year. Last year, Stationery Aid diverted 16,320 litres of used books and stationery items from landfill and helped 366 students in 2022 by donating repurposed booklists. 27 were students impacted by the flooding disaster.
FUNDING BOOST FOR STATIONERY AID A $20,000 donation by the Clem Jones Foundation will help start-up charity Stationery Aid continue its work to recycle stationery items and help improve education outcomes for Queensland’s most disadvantaged students. The generous donation will help to create positive change by donating environmentally sustainable educational resources. Stationery Aid’s Director and Co-founder, Jan Schutt said, “We are so very humbled to have received this benevolent donation from the Clem Jones Foundation which continues the philanthropic work of the former Brisbane Lord Mayor, the late Dr Clem Jones AO. The funding will enable Stationery Aid to reach more of our most vulnerable students not just in South East Queensland but throughout the State.” Stationery Aid began in 2020 when its

OUT & ABOUT BOOK REVIEW EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY HAS KILLED SOMEONE Benjamin Stevenson “Do you promise that your detectives shall well and truly detect the crimes presented to them using those wits which it may please you to bestow upon them and not placing reliance on nor making use of Divine Revelation, Feminine Intuition, Mumbo Jumbo, JiggeryPokery, Coincidence, or Act of God?” Detection Club Oath 1930. Looking for a Whodunnit with a difference? Tired of the killer being the secret twin brother that we have never heard of or the sleuth having access to extra information that is not shared with the reader? Well, so is Benjamin Stevenson and he promises not
to do this or any other annoying habits of Crime Writers in Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone. In fact, he lists the ‘’10 Commandments of Detective Fiction’’, in the opening pages, just so you can hold him to account. Promises aside, Stevenson has delivered a clever and witty crime novel that will keep you guessing at every stage. A family is brought together in an Australian ski resort to welcome back one of their own. A mystery man is found dead on the slopes, and the weather turns foul, snowing them all in, with the killer. Who is the dead man? Did one of the family commit the crime? Who did each family member kill, if everyone in the narrator’s family has killed someone? This is Stevenson’s third novel and shows an in-depth knowledge of the mystery genre, a genuine love for it and a razorsharp wit that plays with its foibles. Was it the brother, the stepsister, the wife, the sister-in-law, the uncle, the stepfather, the aunt or the narrator, because who doesn’t love an unreliable narrator? Let me know if you solve it before the end of the book with an email to info@ baffiesoanbooks.com.au.

OUT & ABOUT CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT UPDATE There was an error in our previous article published in the 22 July edition of The Village Pump. The 149th bird species seen feeding on the white fruit of Psychotria in zone P2 at the Eco-Corridor was a female Regent Bowerbird, which would have come down from Mt Glorious, not the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater, which is a nomadic woodland species that feeds mostly on nectar from eucalypts. Some readers may have noticed that the wooden Eco-Corridor sign above the carpark is missing. It is being repaired by the Men’s Shed because parts of the back of the sign had rotted quite badly. We will need to upgrade our maintenance schedule to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Attendance at our monthly bushcare on Sunday 10 July was decimated by illness, but the few volunteers who made it along did a great job weeding around the new plants on the riverbank. Because we are unable to mulch this section, we will need to do a lot of hand weeding over the next
2 years until the rainforest canopy closes. After that, weeding will be minimal, as it is now in rainforest zones P1 and P2. With the unseasonal rain, we will need a much bigger turn out at our next bushcare working bee from 2 to 4 pm on Sunday 14 August if we are going to keep on top of the weeds, so we hope to see you there. On 19 July, some of our Eco-Corridor birdwatchers spent a morning at QUT SERF, Camp Mountain testing the new app for data entry, as part of our pilot citizen science project with TERN. We were joined by our project leader Dr Katie Irvine and Operations Manager Dr Sally O’Neill, both from Adelaide, and Jazmin Malcolm, Communications Officer based in Brisbane. The app will replace the manual paper data sheets we currently use in the field. We trialled the app on a tablet by surveying two TERN vegetation plots using the 2 hectares in 20 minutes method. We hope to be able to use the app on a mobile in future.

Data entry was fairly slow at first as we got used to the various drop-down options in the app. We found a few minor bugs in the beta version, which should be fixed before our next quarterly bird survey of the vegetation plots at SERF due late in August. Once the app has been thoroughly tested, the project will begin to roll out nationally, using citizen scientists (in this case, experienced birdwatchers) to carry out bird surveys at some of TERN’s 700 sites throughout Australia. This will enable much more data to be collected than researchers would be able to achieve on their own. The final app will be open source, so will be available for use by any group carrying our bird surveys using the BirdLife 1 ha/20 min method, so the benefits will extend well beyond this project. You can contact us via email (ecocorridor@ gmail.com) or follow our Facebook or Instagram pages. Peter Storer

“RHYMING 101” I can’t find a word that rhymes with poem; One bloke did, but I never did know him. There aren’t any words that rhyme with bottom; I have two eyes but I never did dot ’em. There isn’t a number that rhymes with ten; But I made one up, so I had one then. There are no letters that rhyme with F; So I wrote a long letter to my mate Jeff. OUT & ABOUT Butter Factory, Terrors Creek – 1917 (ca) The Queenslander of 15th July 1916 reported “…The farmers of the Terror’s Creek and Samson Vale districts have decided to have their own co-operative factory, and have formed themselves into a company to purchase the Silverwood Dairy Co.’s factory at Terrors Creek. Mr. Denham (director of Silverwood Co.) met the farmers personally, on two occasions recently, putting before them every inducement for co-operating amongst themselves, and he is allowing the factory to change ownership at a very reasonable figure. A strong directorate, under the chairmanship of Mr. D. McLennan (Mount Mee), met on Saturday to put through the articles of association and other preliminary matters, and it is expected that the new company will be registered within the next fortnight. Mr. F. Hepburn (Terror’s Creek) is acting secretary pro tem.”
The co-operative became known as the Terror’s Creek and Samson Vale Co-operative Dairying Co. Ltd. The butter factory was handed over to the co-operative on Saturday 30th September 1916.
Silverwood retained ownership of the adjacent store which was run by a number of lessees until it was destroyed by fire on 26th May 1924. Carmel Bond
