NEXT SDPPA MEETING Wednesday 16th March 2022 Samford Community Hub (SCHUB) 2204 Mt Samson Road, Samford 7pm start. All welcome. Further information: secretary@samfordprogress.org.au.

MEET THE CANDIDATES FORUM COMING SOON For most elections since 1989, local state or federal, the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association (SDPPA) has held a Meet the Candidates forum. The meeting will be chaired by SDPPA President, Michael O’Sullivan and coordinated by David Bannerman. Meetings are usually held on a Wednesday night in the Samford Farmers’ Hall. The date will be confirmed once the election date is set – usually this will be the first Wednesday after nominations close. The format is simple - each candidate will have 5 minutes to address the audience, there will be questions from the floor, mediated through the chair, then closing remarks from the candidates before a light super where further discussion can take place. This forum is held for the benefit of local residents as an exercise in intelligent political discourse, as part of the Association’s civic functions. It is an orderly event and posters and other election material is not allowed in the hall. The Chair will do all he can to ensure that questions come from local residents. Besides the obvious aim of watching and hearing the candidates live on stage, it is an opportunity for local residents to outline their concerns. I look forward to candidates presenting their case to be our representative in Canberra. David Bannerman

LOCAL NEWS SAMFORD LANDCARE PLANTING DAY 19 MARCH All the rain that has fallen over the past months of summer and particularly over this past week, has provided ideal conditions for plant growth and equally for pesky weeds. How to identify, remove and control weeds is one of the most popular enquiries that Samford Landcare receives. Did you know that the Samford Landcare website has an Education Page with a full section on weed identification and control methods? Check it out at www. samfordlandcare.org.au. While you’re there, you can also join up for free. Volunteers Needed All Ages Welcome If you like gardening and planting and would like to join others in an activity to help your local community, Samford Landcare would love you to volunteer at our planting day on Saturday 19 March, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. We’ll be planting lots of native plants alongside Cash Avenue North in Samford, so volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate in what is a really enjoyable experience. If you’d like to help, please let us know you’re coming. Email samfordlandcare@ gmail.com and we’ll send you further details for this event. We look forward to seeing you then.

INSPIRING ALL THE WAY TO IVY LEAGUE Last year local teenager Harry Van Der Ark brought an entire TEDx event to his high school. This year, Harry continues on his inspirational trajectory by being awarded the 2022 Dickson Australia Day Award for Inspirational Youth, as well as receiving not one, but two offers to study in the USA. Ivy League School, Columbia University (New York), and The University of California (Berkeley), are keen to take on the aspiring research scientist and it’s not hard to see why. Last year Harry achieved a SAT result in the 99th percentile and was one of only two students awarded the prestigious Archbishop’s Badge for achieving the Chairperson of the School Board Award in every semester during his six years at Hillbrook Anglican School. He has also been a World Science Scholar for the last 2 years under Professor Brian Greene of Columbia University, which is Harry’s first choice for further study. “I plan to pursue a PhD in Physics, and Columbia’s physics program is designed to facilitate graduates going on to further study. One day I hope to do research on physics and maybe discover something new,” Harry said. “The campus is only a 10 minute subway ride from Times Square and I am very excited to have four years to explore New York City.” Despite his academic achievements as well as his success in spreading big ideas by organising TEDxHillbrookAnglicanSchool last year, there is still an element of surprise

to Harry’s next steps abroad. “It hasn’t completely sunk in yet. I am extremely excited and feel very lucky to have been accepted. It has been something I have been working toward for so long, it feels a bit surreal,” Harry said. “I don’t have any major reservations about going to the US, but I will be a very small fish in a very big pond. I will be away from my family and will have to build a whole new group of friends. That is all a little daunting,” he said. Harry started Columbia’s arduous application process 3 years ago. Applicants need to achieve a top result in the SAT test, an A grade in every subject for the last 4 years of high school, a top ATAR, write numerous essays, and detail awards and extracurricular activities. Harry positively charged through all of that criteria, completing 3 years of research in Astrophysics at UQ, creating a stand at the World Science Festival, the TEDx event, as well as starting his school’s Science Club and Rock Climbing Club. Congratulations Harry on your quantum leap into the USA! Tanya Hall

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY - 8 MARCH What does a community bank, a STEM education program and a project risk management software company have in common? They all embrace local initiatives and feature women at the helm. International Women’s Day on Tuesday 8 March is a chance to celebrate women’s achievements. Last year’s theme focused on women in leadership, while this year the event seeks to break the bias. In combining both themes, we spoke to three local female leaders for their perspectives on managing companies, life in general and equality.

Megan Avard is the Founder & CEO of SurePact, a Samford-based company that centralises information relating to project management and contract deliverables for both the public and private sectors. Megan founded the company after running a large program and realising there was no single point of truth to trace how money was being spent. “Complex trails were being tracked on multiple spreadsheets and no one was interested in creating a single source of data to track the funding of the project. For most people, SurePact was an industry disruption and for others it opened up a Pandora’s Box,” she said. While she hasn’t experienced overt bias in her busy role, Megan notes that she often liaises with people who make helpful promises but fail to follow through. “I’ve spoken with others who say that if I were a male in this environment, I would likely have more follow-through, but people love what I’m doing, both male and female, and they often get really interested in what we’re achieving,” she said. As the CEO of her own organisation, Megan is conscious of seeking a good outcome for everyone in her leadership style. “The best leaders are those that lead with empathy. When you lead with empathy, you

BREAK THE BIAS

lead without judgement. Empathy shows you where your knowledge gap is and is a chance to learn and grow.”

Fiona Holmstrom is the Director & Co-Founder of STEM Punks. While researching education options for her own children, Fiona found that STEM was prevalent in international curriculums but lacking at the time in Australia. Beginning with coding and robotics classes in her garage, STEM Punks was born, and has grown into a global education brand, winning a number of national and international awards. “Sometimes it’s assumed that a man is at the head of the company, and in my case, there is also a co-founder who is male, so I get asked about that a bit. I think there is a certain societal expectation that women can’t be mothers and run companies without a male at the helm,” Fiona said. “There is still a lower percentage of women in leadership and on Boards than men, but things are slowly changing. Recognising the benefits of diversity is the first step to an inclusive workforce,” she said. Fiona recommends that women join business groups and associations to strengthen their networks and skills. “There are so many groups you can join as a woman in business and I’m a member of many associations and industry groups that are supportive and encouraging. These resources exist to help people succeed and get ahead, learn and develop, and should be taken advantage of,” she said. In terms of leadership tips, Fiona advocates facing a common fear head-on. “Don’t be afraid to try and fail. Fail fast, fail frequently, fail forward. Our childhood and schooling sets us up to believe that failure is bad, when in fact it’s quite the opposite. The more we embrace failure, the faster we succeed,” she said.

Mandy Bell is the Senior Branch Manager, Community Bank Samford and Brendale. Mandy reached her current position by working her way up from a teller role and grabbing opportunities as they arose. Her vast experience in the finance industry highlights a culture change that has been slowly unfolding over the years. “In my early days of banking, it was very much a boys’ club. When I became a Manager, the male managers would go to lunch and not invite the female managers and at networking events, the males would congregate together,” she said. “The last five years has seen a real shift with the support that Bendigo Bank has given to its female staff. The Managing Director of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank is a female and we have many women in leadership workshops and programs that we can nominate and attend. Women are now seen in all positions of the bank which is encouraging for all the women in banking,” Mandy said. In terms of leadership, Mandy knows that her achievements rely on the achievements of those around her. “People are your everything, without them you cannot lead. Relationships that you build and maintain through your career are vital to your success.” Leadership that focuses on empathy, embracing failures and building relationships, is a marked change from traditional leadership qualities of the past. A big shout-out to our pioneering local women, of which there are many, who are also leading by example for a future generation of Samford girls who may one day decide to lead in their own unique way. Tanya Hall

LOCAL NEWS SAMFORD VALLEY WEATHER STATION Did you know Samford Valley has its very own weather station? Given the events of the last few weeks, we are so grateful for this amazing FREE local service. The Samford Valley Weather Station is an amateur, automatic, near real-time weather station that uploads its data every 5 seconds to samfordweather.com. The information is presented in a variety of different ways, together with other related information such as local radar, warnings, air traffic, astronomy and thousands of fascinating weather-related trivia. Operated by Steve Parry, the local weather data collection started in January 2006 and has been almost continuous for 16 years. Usual traffic is around 150 visits a day but from 25-27 February, it averaged 1484 hits a day, peaking at 1879 - not surprising!! There is a Blog which provides news and service status of the weather station and the site, and anyone can subscribe to the popular daily email weather summary. The Weather Station external unit is located 90 metres above mean sea level at Westwood Drive, Samford Valley. It is mounted at the top of a 2m pole above the crest of a roof, unhindered by nearby structures or trees. (But not rain!)

Samford RSL Sub-Branch ANZAC DAY 2022 NOTICE TO COMMUNITY AND PARTICIPANTS The Samford RSL Sub-Branch extends a warm welcome for all to attend the 2022 Anzac Day Memorial Service, which will be held at our Avenue of Honour (AoH) on 25 April 2022. This year Anzac Day falls on a Monday.

Can You Help? From time to time, the Weather Station has some significant costs to keep it going and could not survive without the kind donations from local community members, for which Steve is extremely grateful. “As an example, the electronics of the actual weather station was eaten by ants last year and I had to buy a completely new set of sensors and electronics which cost over $200 (a replacement weather station

is about $800),” said Steve. The running costs run into several hundred dollars per year on average, depending on when renewals come up and hardware fails! This is a valuable local service we should all get behind. If you’re interested in supporting this great local initiative, visit samfordweather.com or email info@ samfordweather.com

Anzac Day is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who fought and died at Gallipoli in 1915. It is also a day of remembrance for all soldiers who have fought and died for their country. SAMFORD EDIBLE GARDEN TRAIL UPDATE

BUNYA NUT HEAVEN It’s Bunya Nut season and there appears to be a wonderful harvest happening and some lovely recipes featuring Bunya Nuts floating around. For those of you unfamiliar with this iconic local pine, this could be a game changer for your diet!

Firstly, let’s clear up any misconceptions. Bunya ‘Nuts’ are a native bush food but are not actually a nut at all. They are the seed of the Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) and are in season mid to late summer. While they produce female and male flowers on the one tree, they are not designed to self-pollinate so require two or more trees nearby for productivity. If you are planting some, locate them well away from areas of use, as they have hazardous self-harvesting cones not dissimilar to a bowling ball in weight and size (though they can be bigger!) Most years will see trees over 25 years of age produce cones, with a bumper crop every 3 years. This year was a BIG year!

To get to the seed, first allow the cone to ripen - wind is sometimes why they fall when still unripe. Evidence of ripening is the increasing gaps between the numerous segments that make up each cone. Dropping a ripe cone from head-height will usually separate the segments sufficiently to break the rest of the cone apart and the segments off the cone’s core. You then need to free each seed from its casing; best done straight away, as it’s easier than if the casing membrane has time to dry out. Covering them in boiling water for a few minutes will also soften the casing. There are many suggestions for removing the thick husk from the bunya kernel. A common method is to soak them in boiling water for around 10 minutes. Alternatively, cook in a pressure cooker for 30 minutes or slow cook for 2 hours on high. Whichever method you choose, you will want to work quickly once you take the nuts out to de-husk them, as the husks will harden again on drying – so don’t soak or cook your entire crop in one go! A very sharp knife, cleaver, poultry shears or secateurs will make the de-husking task manageable - but do watch your fingers!!

De-husked nuts can be cooled and then frozen whole, halved, or blended to a meal/ flour consistency, or even dehydrated for use later. Be careful when re-heating, as overcooking will turn them leathery and hard. There are many ways to use Bunya Nuts: as an almond meal substitute in baking (50/50 + add a few drops of almond extract or essence), make a pesto or pasta dough, added to stews (great in the slow cooker!), stir-fried, roasted, boiled, in curries, casseroles, hummus, damper and more. Robyn Edwards has shared this delicious recipe to start your Bunya Nut journey.

Bunya Nut Pesto Dip 1½ cups Basil leaves 5 cloves Garlic, chopped ¼ cup Pine Nuts ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated ½ cup Olive Oil Lemon juice, a squeeze (opt.) 250g shelled and cooked Bunya Nuts Method: Blitz the Bunya Nuts in a food processor until they resemble fine breadcrumbs. Set aside. Place the basil, garlic and pine nuts in the food processor and process until finely chopped. Add the grated Parmesan and mix. Add the olive oil. This works best if the oil is added slowly in a steady stream. Do not over-process. Incorporate Bunya nut mix and you’re done! Store in a covered container in the fridge for up to a week. We have created hands-on learning that empowers people to develop skills to grow their own nutrientrich, super-fresh seasonal fruit and veggies, and build on their commitment to ecological sustainability. NATIVE BEE WORKSHOP Native bees are an essential part of our environment. Perhaps we take them for granted because we may not realise just how important they are. On 19th February, the first of our Native Bee Workshop Series at Millen Farm welcomed guest facilitator, Ian Driver, President of the Australian Native Bee Association, who shared his knowledge about the diverse range of native bees in QLD. When Ian was asked to come along as a guest facilitator, the Millen Farm education unit looked for something beyond beekeeping. The workshop covered beehives and beehive management; it also included a lot of information on how to attract solitary native bees and build a habitat the bees would be attracted to. The next workshop is on Saturday 2nd April, 9am – 1pm. Further information on Facebook: Millen Farm – events. THE VILLAGE PUMP 04 MARCH 2022– Page 9

GET INVOLVED ‘COME & TRY’ DAYS S a m f o r d Equestrian Group (SEG) just hosted their first major event for 2022 – a HUGE ‘Come & Try’ day on Sunday 20th February. All three SEG disciplines ran concurrently – Dressage, Jumping and Working Equitation (W.E.) in what was arguably the biggest footprint event for SEG in its 35 year history on Denis Goodwin Reserve! Because our club grounds were rather damp still after all the recent rain and extra long grass prevailed, this presented quite an issue for safe equine footing (sparing

a thought for Council mowers working overtime ATM). Luckily however we were able to hire the old Showgrounds Polo Field adjoining SEG. The footing there was excellent for our walk/trot W.E. Newbie groups thanks to Showground’s Manager Terry R’s diligent mowing. Even ole’ Wally the Wonder Horse came out of semiretirement (so he thinks) to join in the rewarding fun mentoring the newbies! Both members and non-members of all ages and abilities were warmly welcomed. Such is the popularity of these sports at SEG, and the demand from local horse owners, that classes were quickly snapped up well ahead of the booking deadline! It was truly exciting to see so many newbies in the various disciplines.

Unique marketing opportunity, working on a high-profile event

There were countless smiles, personal achievements realised and many attesting to the fulfilment of long-held dreams of participating in club group activities, or riding a dressage test for the first time – many of whom have overcome personal challenges along the way. For those into Dressage, these ‘Fun Member Days’ provide the perfect opportunity to try something new and ride a test at your level, without too much pressure on you or your horse. Highly qualified judges provide written feedback to each rider, so it’s like a mini coaching session as well. Plus, there’s generous placings for ribbons, so plenty of smiles and keepsakes for show ‘n’ tell afterwards! For the Jumping crowd, SEG’s qualified eventing coach Dani Hess is right there with you on the field, supporting every rider through the course – whether it’s poles to 30cm max or over 60cm-90cm upwards. If you’re a horse lover, there’s something for everyone at SEG! Even if you don’t have a horse, you can still learn lots and have a ball as part of the exciting action. Volunteers are revered and always needed at events. You can even bid for your favourite job such as ‘Dressage Gate-keeper’ or ‘Jump Poles Re-setter’ or ‘W.E. Garrocha Boss’… it’s up to you. Just jump onto our Contacts page now at: www.samfordequestriangroup.com and reach out to your favourite discipline Co-ord. Did you know – SEG is the largest EA club in QLD! Normally we only hold one ‘Come & Try’ day per year where non-members can join in. However, due to popular demand this year - and a waiting list of keen participants – we’re hosting another W.E. ‘Come & Try Again’ day on Sun 6th March. Visit our calendar page on our website for future events. See you at SEG!

The Samford Show Society is gearing up to break more records for the 2022 Show in July. Last year’s Show was the biggest ever in our 50+ years, and we are aiming even higher this year. We need a marketing/promotions person to round out our team of highly committed volunteers. Your job is to engage with sponsors and develop a comprehensive marketing strategy. This is a great opportunity to hone your multi-media promotional skills while getting to know the local business and community sectors through association with this high-profile event. Although we are a fully volunteer organisation, we will negotiate an appropriate fee package (including recognition of success) with the right person. Please contact Terry Hogan, Samford Show Society President, on 0409 748 829 to arrange a chat. Page 10 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 04 MARCH 2022

MUSIC UNDER THE STARS

Samford Area Mens Shed After being suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2021, the Samford Music Under the Stars event was finally held on Saturday 12th February. What a successful event it was! There was the hint of rain earlier on in the afternoon, but Mother Nature did hold off the deluge, much to the enjoyment of the 3,500 people who attended the festivities. There was continuous music from 4:30pm until the end at 8:30pm, performed by some very excellent musicians indeed. Around the parameter of the showground, there were food, entertainment and merchandise stalls aplenty – hungry for a feed or checking out the range of services and merchandise on offer.

The Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS) marquee was in a prime position and attracted a lot of interest from visitors to the Music Under the Stars event who were not only curious to see what SAMS was all about, but also were eager to see and purchase the range of items that were there for sale. For SAMS, it was a very successful night. SAMS presence at the event was well received by the visitors and the number of items sold exceeded all expectations. Of course, there were men who visited the SAMS marquee who also expressed an interest in joining SAMS as members. Thanks goes to SAMS members who helped set up, man the marquee and dismantle and return everything back to our shed afterwards Les Cannard, Les Maher, George Reid, Phil Walters, Allen Marr, Ian MacPherson and Dennis Arnold. Men of Samford and surrounds, you’re welcome to come along and see what SAMS is all about. Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. TREE LOPPING + MULCHING + STUMP GRINDING

Samford Lions Club Samford Lions Club played an important role supervising the parking at Music Under The Stars, held on 12th February at the Samford Showgrounds. Hosted by Moreton Bay Regional Council, the gold-coin event was headlined by Rumours, the Australian Fleetwood Mac Experience, who performed their inter-generational hits. There were also performances from emerging indiereggae rock band Lucid Safari, Angel Strings Quartet and acoustic artist Amy Kate. Parking logistics are a necessary part of any event, with careful coordination of parking entrance and exit flow essential. If you’ve ever crawled through a packed parking lot looking desperately for a space, then you know that this kind of environment creates confusion, frustration and can even lead to vehicle accidents. The impact of traffic at the event was as expected - constant and heavy - and our excellent team directed cars throughout the night, preventing traffic jams and providing safe directional parking flow. Chatting to people as they arrived, we discovered many locals but also people who had travelled from afar, including Bellbowrie, Caboolture and Mitchelton. We hope we made the parking encounter pleasurable and that your experience for the whole evening was enjoyable.

While our volunteer attendants weren’t close to the action, it didn’t stop them from enjoying the music and the baton direction swings were in time with the beautiful music heard from the oval. Over 700 cars were safely tucked into the showgrounds by Samford Lions volunteers and the whole event was fun, social and enjoyable for our incredible team. Alison Kenny

GET OUTINVOLVED & ABOUT Spider Survey a Huge Success

described in Australia and likely to be four times as many altogether, so we have barely scratched the surface.

On the evening of Saturday 12 February, we held our second spider survey at the EcoCorridor, led by Greg Anderson (co-author of ‘A Field Guide to Australian Spiders’, CSIRO Publishing). This was a community event and our enthusiastic attendees came from far and wide, including Kallangur and even the Sunshine Coast. After a Covid and OHS briefing, we began searching along the Eco-Trail just before dusk and continued for well over 2 hours using spotlights to find webs. Many spiders were very small and needed a hand lens to identify them. In 2022, we added 16 new genera/species to our list, including four new families. Highlights were seeing net-casting spiders that can throw a special web over their prey in the blink of an eye and learning that some spiders scavenge for scraps in other spiders’ webs. We have now identified 49 spiders to genus or species at the Eco-Corridor belonging to 18 families (details on our Facebook page). This sounds impressive, but there are about 4000 species

Cyrtarachne tricolor: one of the fascinating spiders at the Eco-Corridor (photo: Greg Anderson)

We held our first MBRC-led bushcare working bee of 2022 on Sunday 13 February. Most of our volunteers weeded our newest rainforest planting on the river bank. There were lots of small Madeira Vines to remove from around the rapidly growing trees and shrubs, plus many species of sun weeds and a few invasive grasses. Others tackled the very tall Guinea Grass at the top of the bank or lopped branches protruding across the Eco-trail or from the outer boundary

towards the carpark and netball courts. Our birdwatchers have been busy too. On 8 February, they carried out the fourth quarterly bird survey of two vegetation plots at QUT SERF at Camp Mountain. In vegetation plot 1 they recorded 18 species in 20 minutes and in plot 3/4 they found an impressive 30 species. It was especially pleasing to flush a Painted Buttonquail, having seen the evidence of fresh platelets during all our previous surveys. TERN is pleased with the data collected during the first year of this citizen science project, which will eventually be rolled out nationally. On 16 February, our birding team recorded 58 species during our monthly survey at the Eco-Corridor. Highlights included seeing about 30 Fairy Martins hawking over the tennis centre on arrival, a pair of Variegated Fairywrens in the remnant past the waterhole and hearing White-eared Monarch. You never know when a casual coffee chat could change the course of your business or career. Networking is an effective and exciting way to keep expanding your business connections. As a small business owner, you probably don’t have a lot of time. But it’s important to carve out a bit of time to network, especially with other small businesses. You’re probably thinking, “But time is money,” and you’re right. If done correctly, this small investment of time could be worth a lot of money.

URGENT HELP NEEDED

Samford Museum is looking for handy men and women to assist with routine maintenance and presentation jobs throughout the museum complex – one day per week. Are you are a retired tradesman, or handy lady, who would be very keen to use your skills to help keep Samford Museum’s buildings and displays looking fresh? We invite you to call our President, Geoff Harris on 0417 610 983 or send a message via email info@samfordmuseum.com.au. We are a not-for-profit society operated entirely by volunteers. In appreciation for your help, we will provide you with a delicious morning tea and a light lunch. Membership ($15) would be required for insurance purposes. TREADLE MACHINES As we carry out major display changes, we are reminded of many aspects of our local history from the objects we have on display. Treadle sewing machines (pictured top right) were once a ‘must have’ item in most homes, when clothes were homemade, re-sized and mended many times before they became dusters. Thanks to generous donors, the camera collection tells us how fortunate we are to have had access to such a variety of photos for our records. Today with digital cameras and phones, we can take many and delete, rather than take rolls of film to the local pharmacy to be sent to the photo labs for ‘develop and print’. An apology - An incorrect contact number for Geoff was published in the last edition. Anyone who attempted to call please try again on 0417 610 983.

PLEASE NOTE (COVID 19): Due to the uncertainty relating to COVID 19 restrictions, we advise all visitors to telephone the Museum on 3289 2743 to check opening times.

Samford Bowls Club Competitions: Tyrepower Everton Hills Cup: Round 3 - Samford is doing extremely well in this competition with another win to keep the lead in Pool A with 14 points, followed by Chermside Blue 8, Kallangur Red 6 and Dayboro Maroon 2. Alex Gow: Round 3 - unfortunately we are not as successful in this competition, coming up against some strong competitors. Samford is currently 6th and even though we have had some close games, they were not good enough to collect sufficient points to feature in the leading group. Ladies 2022 Champion of Champions Singles was played by two of our very best lady players - Pam Campbell and Jo Ehrlich. It was a very tight game which could have been won by either player. Congratulations to Pam Campbell for her win. Some of our members not only play the game of lawn bowls with finesse but they donate their time to our club taking on volunteer roles. Some also volunteer time to the Brisbane District Bowls Association to enable them to assist the clubs. One of these members is Pam Campbell, who was bestowed a Life Membership of BDBA at

their recent AGM. Pams service as Secretary of BDBA for 10 years and ongoing, is a milestone achievement for her dedication in serving not only the District but the many Clubs in the Association. Pam has also assisted with the BDBA Ladies Section in carrying out various duties including being a representative player of District Challenge teams. Pam has been a member of the Samford District Bowls Club for 23 years and as well as her volunteer work with the BDBA, she is our Players Committee Secretary. Congratulations Pam from all the members of the Samford District Bowls Club. Mah-jong is played every Wednesday and Friday 1pm - 4pm at the Bowls Club. Everyone is welcome. Contact Jan 0402 623 794. OPINION PIECE A Short (republican) History of Australia The constitutional debate about Australia transitioning from monarchy to republic has been stirred by an elected president model from the Australian Republican Movement. A short review of Australian republicanism reveals deeper forces shaping Australia since colonial times. Growing patriotism through the 19th century was accompanied by distrust of Britain but paradoxically by Imperial loyalty, believing Australia’s security lay in keeping British connections against French, Americans, Russians, Germans, Japanese and Chinese. Republican ideals competed for space in colonial times. British colonists imported British Whig-v-Tory views on religion, class, status and Imperial connections. Early governors faced growing demands from native-born for a say in local matters and American republicanism began to be cited as an alternative to control from London. Farmer/politician Horatio Wills was the first recorded supporter of an Australian Republic in 1831, motivated by support for ex-convict and native-born Emancipists against the Exclusives who complained the

lower orders didn’t know their place and wouldn’t stay in it. Sectarian bitterness between (Irish) Catholics and (English) Protestants found expression, among other things, in the eventual formation of class-based political parties. Republican sentiment ran strongest among the Irish, responding to English repression in Ireland.

Independently minded gold diggers from 1851 onwards boosted republicanism, particularly after the Eureka rebellion in December 1854 against repression of the miners by Victorian Governor Hotham. For the rest of the century, patriotic and republican ideas were voiced by poets like Henry Lawson and contributors to the radical periodical Bulletin – the “bushman’s bible”. With Federation looming, attention went to squaring competing free trade/ protectionist interests, labour/non labour conflict and bedding down the Federation. Republicanism was an undercurrent rather than mainstream alongside empire loyalism. WW1 saw an outpouring of Imperial sentiment despite failings of the British military in Gallipoli and France. Postwar life was dominated by increasing conservativism, risk-averse politics, the Great Depression and several monarchist proto-fascist movements. After WW11, interest turned to nation - and populationbuilding as insurance against invasion. Robert Menzies’ long tenure as Prime Minister saw us wary of change, prosperous and complacent. The only referendum on a republic was held by the Government of monarchist John Howard in 1999. The extent of republican support was hidden by manipulation of voters who were not asked if they wanted a republic, when polls showed a majority clearly did, but if the president should be chosen by the Government of the day, which a majority clearly did not. The debate has been suspended until the departure of the current monarch: her personal high regard

undermined by rolling family scandals, echoing the late 19th century when children of the revered Queen Victoria were embroiled in similar scandals. Before Federation in 1901, autocratic colonial Governors’ powers were slowly moderated by local legislatures. Post Federation, State Governors representing the Crown have generally followed the advice of State governments, except when Governor Philip Game sacked Premier Jack Lang in 1932 over a fight between the financial interests of London bankers and Lang’s insistence that local interests should prevail. High Court Judge Isaac Issacs was the first Australian-born Governor General whose nomination in 1931 by Prime Minister Scullin outraged King George V, monarchists and antisemites and who was the only Governor General refused entry to the Melbourne Club. Until “British-tothe-bootstraps” Menzies retired in 1966, Governors-General were usually aged male English aristocrats of uneven talent and morals. Except for John Kerr in 1975, Governors-General kept out of politics, in public at least. So the question now is: if not a monarchy, what sort of republic? The powers exercised by Kerr in consultation with Buckingham Palace drew a significant line in the sand. Kerr’s behaviour demolishes the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” argument. Human frailty being what it is, 1975 can happen again. Kerr’s actions were not neutral and the power to sack a Government remains intact. Whatever else, this issue demands attention. To monarchists, the Governor General represents a stable, monarchical Head of State; regardless of the rights or wrongs, the Kerr episode shouldn’t be repeated. To get around this and the problem of an absentee monarch, some have suggested a homegrown hereditary monarchy. The quixotic, short-lived attempt in 2014 by Prime Minister Tony Abbott to reinstate the British system of knighthoods added another dimension altogether. To republicans, it is improper and demeaning that the highest formal position in the land is the representative of a foreign hereditary monarch whose stability is unknowable, can never be an Australian with an Australian passport and whose appointment is an accident of birth. SPYs (St Paul’s Youth) has commenced for the year. Our artistic talents were brought to the fore as marbled artworks were produced by all. Who’d have thought a cup full of paint upturned on a canvas could look so good. (pictured) SPYs meets on the third Friday of the month for those in Grades 7-10. An evening of food, craft and discussion from 6pm - 9pm. New Markets Our Markets are expanding. As stated in the advertisement on page 4, as well as our Samford Valley Markets on the second Saturday of the month, we are trialling a food market on the fourth Saturday of March. Our food and produce vendors will be in the grounds. This will be a smaller market that is purely food oriented. Take the opportunity for a crepe and coffee brunch and pick your fresh fruit and veg and olive oil while you are there. At a meeting of the Parish Council on 23 February, it was decided to continue with the current service times and conditions

for the coming month. Sunday services continue with Holy Communion at 8am where proof of vaccination IS required and at 10am where proof of vaccination is NOT required. (Please note the exception mentioned below). We will continue to monitor circumstances monthly, anticipating that we will eventually return to our normal service times. Along with the rest of the community we will monitor the impact of the forecast relaxed restrictions by the State and Federal Governments. KEEPING YOU INFORMED PINE RIVERS UPDATE Samford Road safety update: It has been some time since the Department of Transport and Main Roads consulted with our community around their plans to complete Samford Road safety upgrades between Camp Mountain and Lomandra Picnic Area. Works were proposed under the Targeted Road Safety Program and include; resurfacing, guardrails, shoulder widening, wide centre line treatments to separate through traffic and reduce the potential for head-on and loss-of-control crashes, drainage improvements, lighting, signage and pavement rehab, as well as the removal of the 750-metre westbound overtaking lane. During this consultation period, I received 324 separate community responses, 250 submissions opposed the removal of the overtaking lane, 27 submissions supported it. This section of road has seen too many serious injuries with head-on and run-off crashes, including a tragic fatality in recent weeks.

I know that our community want this road improved. The resurfacing of the road has been embraced, as has the intersection upgrade at Camp Mountain Road intersection. During the interceding time, I have met numerous times with the department to convey the community concern and to find a sensible solution. There has been investigation by the department to see how they could achieve the safety objectives, including concerns around excessive speed using the overtaking lane. My discussions with the department continue on these matters. I have stated in no uncertain terms, we need the overtaking lane to remain. I am pleased to update the community on road surface treatments on approximately 2km of Samford Road from just west of Wahminda Park at Ferny Hills to about 300 metres west of Havelock Court at Camp Mountain. It is a shot blasting treatment in both directions and will occur around the time this goes to print. It is intended to improve the safety of the road surface. Shot blasting works will improve the skid resistance of the road surface, it is performed with a specialised machine that blasts steel balls at the road surface to increase its friction properties. As the machine moves along, it collects the particles, while recycling the steel balls. The technique is environmentally friendly and provides a cost-effective method to deliver safety improvements. Night works are scheduled to begin on 27 February and will be undertaken from Sunday to Thursday, between 7pm and 6am, weather and scheduling permitting and will take approximately one week to complete. Nearby residents may experience noise, dust and possible vibration while works are underway. Motorists may experience some delays when temporary single lane closures are in place. Traffic controllers, reduced speed limits, roadworks signage and variable messaging signs will be in place to advise of the changed traffic conditions and to ensure motorist and roadworker safety. Emergency service access will be prioritised through the site during the works period. I appreciate that while there is a desire to have a safer road, it also needs to meet community need and will continue to advocate for sensible solutions that can make the road safer. Newmarket VIEW Club ‘Voice, Interests and Education of Women’ Celebrating 100 Years of The Smith Family In 1922, five Sydney businessmen delivered gifts to the Carlingford Boys Home on Christmas Eve. They referred to themselves as The Smiths to remain anonymous. The 1930s was a decade characterised by hardship, but it was also a time when people came together to help one another. The Smith Family’s vision – a better future for young Australians in need – was truly born. With the help of caring Australians, food and clothing packages were delivered, and hospitals and orphanages were established to help the most vulnerable members of society. The Newmarket VIEW Club is part of a network of over 300 clubs and 15,000 women throughout Australia supporting The Smith Family. Our members use raffles and donations to raise funds to continue to support our seven students following The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program, by sponsoring their school activities. These children were among the hardest hit during school shutdowns, as many didn’t have the right tools they needed to learn from home. OUR STUDENTS ARE: Roudwan (13), Jesse (13), Abbee (17), Tony (11), Mitchell (7), Abigail (8), Amy (10). If you wish to know more about the Newmarket VIEW Club, email us on newmarketview@gmail.com

TREASURER NEEDED Sadly, our Treasurer, Greg Goad, has stepped down from the Management Committee (MC) this month. We would like to thank Greg for the time and good that he contributed to the running of the SSN. He showed enormous care for the people we help and the coordinators he worked closely with and we know that his departure from this role will be felt. On the MC he provided humour, brought good questions, spoke with honesty and also delivered regular financial reports. We hope that in stepping down he is able to spend more time with his wife, and with his wider family. We take comfort in knowing that he is still sharing his care by continuing with the SSN. What this now means for the MC is that we need a Treasurer. If you have some spare time and would like to volunteer with a team, have good organisational skills, have expertise in bookwork and management of

high financial transactions using financial management software, maintain accurate records, and feel you can contribute on a regular basis to providing good governance to the SSN, please let us know. The role is an unpaid volunteer position that is rewarding in providing support to a wider team of people. For more information on what the role entails, please email ssn@ samfordsupportnetwork.com THANK YOU Another big thank you to the wonderful team of Riley and Thomas who were successful in their goal of raising $1000 for the SSN over 30 days. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this fundraiser and to Ross Pickering from Samford Garage for donating the last amount needed to get the boys across the line to reach their goal amount. The SSN is very appreciative of this generosity.

SERVICE UPDATE Over the past few months our services have been reduced somewhat as we manage the current COVID situation. One of the areas impacted by this reduction is our Transport Service. Under normal circumstances the SSN provides pick up and drop off transport to SSN clients for medical appointments, social events and other needed transport. We have reduced this service to only medical appointments for the time being. If you are a client using this service, please remember this service is subject to availability of our volunteer drivers and require a minimum of 48 hours notice. The transport Service is there to support clients who have a genuine need for transport. Please remember this when booking the service. Management Committee

HIDDEN PLAYGROUNDS Continuing our tour of hidden playgrounds, this edition we’re sticking close to the hub of Samford with a small playground tucked away behind a wellknown intersection.

Kupidabin Park 15 Corbett Street Samford Village A short drive down one of the lessertaken turns of the Main St roundabout will take you to a small park, nestled among the established trees that make this little pocket of Samford a delight for local residents. This park area is great for younger children, with a modest playground that won’t send them at any death-defying speeds down the short slides. For older kids, there is a more challenging rope climb apparatus for re-enactments of Spider Man, or for general upside-down hanging with mates. To keep up with babycino demand, a play café sits under the slide platform, while a motorbike-style rocker rounds off the main area play equipment. Behind a small line of shrubs there is the all-important swing set which seats both older kids and toddlers. This is easy to miss at first glance, so it’s worth the little walk around the chip bark area.

For the adults there is an undercover table and chairs, so BYO assortment of food is welcome here. Regular upkeep of this park area is thanks to Samford Lions Club, which little ones and their parents appreciate very much. Tanya Hall

OUT & ABOUT

NOT IF, BUT HOW The conversation around climate change has now shifted irreversibly one thinks from “if we need to do something” to “how we do it.” Of course, many had ticked off the “if” questions decades ago and have been busily into the “how” for some time. The emphases on what to do may differ but the reduction of reliance on fossil fuels, the way we treat our natural habitat and the way we regenerate our earth and marine surfaces are at the core. Many in Samford and elsewhere recognise that the natural environment is indeed the foundation for building a resilient economy and a safe, healthy and thriving community - sort of reflecting the insights of the people who were first here, our First People. Well before the start of the 21st century, the concept of a community owned recycle station came into reality in Samford. This was followed by the efforts of groups like the Samford Rotary Club, Pine Rivers Climate Action Network, Millen Farm, Samford Commons and Green Street, that all raised the level of consciousness about climate change. And of course, the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association was born out of an environmental issue and has continued through its Sustainable Samford working group and other action projects to do plenty of “hows”. The Rotary Club conducted public fora on the topic way before it became fashionable and community groups ran the Samford Solar Neighbourhood and the Change our Bag Habits project years before other communities took up the challenge. The Samford Chamber of Commerce and the Community Bank Samford have supported the Samford Sustainable Business Network and multiple actions by the dozens of businesses in the network. The list goes on with the Eco Corridor and Edible Garden Trail projects flying along and other groups such as the Scouts and the Show Society doing their thing. (Apologies to those not mentioned.) What may not be known is that virtually all these projects were initiated by individuals and groups as different to the tiers of government. Though some government funds have been contributed once activities have started.

And none of those people ever asked “if”, just simply got into the “how”, having understood the “why.” If you know of other projects or would like to initiate such a project, please email info@greenstreet.net.au or call 0407 190 162, or write about it in the next Village Pump. www.greenstreet.net.au Howard Nielsen

In April and May, we’ll be involved in the National Heritage Festival, so stay tuned for our special dances. We’ll also be performing at the National Folk Festival. Upcoming dances in Samford: 11 & 25 March, 1 & 22 April. We’re part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Healthy & Active so it only costs $4.00. For more info visit www. colonialdance.com.au or call Heather 3289 4708. Folk dances are joyful events that turn a roomful of strangers into a roomful of smiling friends by evening’s end. Dr Heather Blasdale Clarke Cultural Historian

We started the year with a Shakespearean Dance workshop for 4MBS, and since then have enjoyed three of our regular Community Folk Dances in the Farmers Hall and performed at the Commissariat Museum. It’s delightful being able to share this very social dance form with people who have never experienced it before: it’s an easy, fun, accessible social activity that is open to anyone - no experience or costume is necessary, we always teach the dances, and welcome newcomers. We’re tremendously fortunate to have a dedicated band of musicians (all volunteers) called Phillip’s Dog who play for every dance.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT Go Green As We Grow During March, Council staff will be out and about asking people in the community how Council can manage the urban growth of the region, while also protecting our natural habitats, parklands and our lifestyle through smarter planning, an initiative called ‘Go Green As We Grow’. Through Council’s Moreton Says survey, the community has voiced concerns about the surging population in the region with our population predicted to grow by more than 200,000 people over the next 20 years. We cannot stop the growth, but we can look at some of the biggest concerns that will face Council, such as transport infrastructure, affordable living options, responding to Climate Change and how we can prevent more ad hoc development. There are three big issues that Council is looking for your feedback on: environment and sustainability; growth and planning; and transport. You can make your voice heard and share your thoughts by getting involved in a range of activities - you can do as much or as little as you like. For more information and to register go to yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/ourmoreton. It is so important to have your say about this great region we call home. Take a minute to have a look and see how you can help shape the future of your community and the Moreton Bay area. If you would like more information about Council’s Go Green As We Grow, call my office on 3480 6455 or email Darren.grimwade@moretonbay. qld.gov.au. Car Park Resurfacing Works will be carried out at Harold Brown Park, corner of Richards Road and Binalong Court, Wights Mountain, as part of Council’s Car Park Renewal Program. The works will take place during March and should take around one week to complete. There will be resurfacing and repairs to approximately 44 metres of the carpark, with an average width of around 25.4 metres. Keep an eye out for any changed traffic conditions while works are happening which will generally take place between the hours of 7am-6pm. Cr Darren Grimwade

COMPARE THE PAIR Most people would be familiar with the charismatic Willie Wagtail, which would be found in or around most properties with open habitats in the Samford district, but not in the rainforested areas of the surrounding mountains. The pleasant song is often rendered as ‘sweet pretty creature’ and may often be heard well into the night, especially at full moon. The contact call is a harsh grating ‘chitit-chitit-chitit’. The Willie Wagtail spends a lot of time foraging on the ground while constantly wagging its tail from side to side to flush insects. It will also sally for flying insects from vantage points such as fence posts, rocks or shrubs.

Willie Wagtail

However, it is worth keeping an eye out for a very similar-looking, but much less common, bird: the Restless Flycatcher. Its song is a three-note ‘tuii-tuii-tuii’ and a more drawn out ‘joy-joy-joy’. It also makes a distinctive grinding call ‘bzzzrrrt’, said to sound like sharpening scissors. It spends most of the time sallying for insects from low perches, often hovering for a few seconds, while making the grinding call.

Restless Flycatcher

Besides the song and behavioural differences, the Willie Wagtail has a distinctive white ‘eyebrow’ (lacking in the flycatcher) and the black on the head extends down the throat and upper breast, while the Restless Flycatcher has a white chin and breast. See if you can spot both birds in your area. If you do, why don’t you send us a photo? editor@ villagepump.org.au Peter Storer

KEEPING YOU INFORMED DICKSON NOTES A Message from Peter It has been a big year for our community so far and I am pleased to provide an update on some the things I’ve been working on locally. You may have noticed upgrades taking place at parks, community facilities and on roads in our local area. Some of these are projects funded through the Morrison Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which provides funding to local Councils to undertake important projects, like the two new tennis courts currently being built at Samford Tennis Club, creating many jobs. Construction on the new park’n’ride for commuters at Ferny Grove train station is well underway and is due to be completed late 2022. More than 800 full time jobs are being supported thanks to the development of the Transit Orientated Development, including about 285 jobs involved in the construction locally. Following completion there will be over 1,400 car parks for commuters. I am proud to have secured an $11 million contribution from the Federal Government for this important project. Road safety in the Valley has been improved thanks to the Coalition Government’s Black Spot Program. The

upgrade of Mount Nebo Road near Jollys Lookout, and the work done at Mount Nebo Road, west of Black Soil Road and near Darcy Kelly Road, was funded by this program. Locations funded under this program are identified using crash data to show where fatalities and serious injuries on our roads most frequently occur. These are just some of the things I’ve been working on for our community. However, there is still a lot of work to be done. By working together we can get the road, transport and facilities upgrades we need to make our community even better. Child Care Subsidy Increase From 7 March 2022, families with more than one child aged five years or under, in care, will get a higher subsidy for their second child and any younger children. Eligible higher rate children receive a 30% higher subsidy, up to a maximum 95%. This will make a real difference for about 250,000 eligible Australian families who will be more than $2,200 a year better off. The annual subsidy cap of $10,655 was also removed on 10 December 2021 and will be applied retrospectively for the whole 2021/22 financial year. Find out more at www.dese.gov.au/child-care-subsidy. What’s important to you? Please get in touch with me at peter. dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let

me know your priorities for our community. Or you can drop into my next mobile office. I am approaching 2,500 visits in my mobile office and have helped thousands of residents with local issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. Alternatively, you can drop by my office on Gympie Road, Strathpine during business hours. DAYBORO STATE SCHOOL 1922 – UPPER CLASSES Last edition we published a photo of the lower classes at Dayboro State School. This photo of the upper classes at Dayboro State School is believed to have been taken in September 1922. The only person who can be positively identified is my mother Ivy Weston on the far right in the second back row. She was enrolled at Dayboro State School on 23rd August 1920 and left in September 1922 after her 14th birthday. After the new school building was opened
