The Private Percy Cash Bridge is an example of working with Council to improve the local area.

“Some people say it’s a ‘bridge to nowhere’, I say ‘it’s a bridge to the next 100 years.’”

In his last weeks, David was still doing his bit to improve the community by picking up rubbish on the side of the road during his daily walks. He remained passionate about recycling for a better future which is unsurprising from the founder of the Trash and Treasure shed at the Samford Waste Transfer Station.

“The secret of (Trash and Treasure) is that it made people coming to the tip anticipate they might get something. So they generally came in a fairly good mood. People in a bad mood generally won’t recycle,” David said.

In his final days, David was similarly passionate about letting others suffering from a terminal illness know that options were available to them.

GEOFF JACKSON A celebration of life

Many people in the community would have known or met Geoff over the past nearly 20 years. Geoff and his wife Minty and family moved to Samford nearly 20 years ago where they quickly became part of the community, setting up their family Chiropractic practice.

The close knit family loved living on acreage in this beautiful area (even though they came from Sydney and were told they wouldn’t cope with the lifestyle change). Most people who knew Geoff would also have known his wife and daughters, who were not only close as a family, but also worked together in the practice. Geoff helped many people as a chiropractor over the 30 years he practiced.

Just over 10 years ago he found out that he had MS which to start off with, was more of an inconvenience, with tingling and numbness in his hand and foot. This steadily moved on to cause more symptoms and significant disabilities which we then found out was a result of Primary Progressive MS (this is a particular type of

“For me, voluntary assisted dying is painless, it’s procedural, it’s not confronting. For someone in my situation, it’s just a relief.”

David was also given the chance to say goodbye to the community he loved being an active part of.

“I’ve had a good life; I’ve had a constructive life. I’ve lived a better life than I thought I would.”

“I’ve spoken to a lot of friends. And those people I haven’t spoken to, I bid them farewell and wish them well.”

FUNERAL NOTICE

David Bannerman passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday 27th February 2023. Family and friends are invited to attend a service at Samford Cemetery on Tuesday 7th March at 10am, followed by a celebration of David’s life at the Farmers Hall, Main Street, Samford.

MS which relentlessly continues to cause irreparable damage to the nervous system).

A few years ago, Geoff had to retire due to this ill health and luckily, with the help of his brother and then daughter (who are both chiropractors) his patients continued to receive the care they had with him.

Sadly, due to the MS and other health issues, Geoff’s health continued to decline and he sadly passed away on 10th February.

We are holding a Celebration of Life for Geoff at 10am on 14th March at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Samford and then at Little Tree Bake & Brew House. All family, friends and patients are welcome to attend. (Please could you call our practice to confirm, if you have not already done so on our Facebook event, due to seating etc. Phone: 3289-6618)

VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD

A NEAT Opportunity

While it may be a given that The Village Pump hits your letterboxes each fortnight, the paper was quietly at a crossroads in 2023 after facing distribution issues. Enter a group of entrepreneurial brothers who have expanded their local cleaning and yard maintenance company into mail distribution; allowing your local source of news to continue to be delivered and attracting some new clients for themselves along the way.

Tialyn and Sheldon Loechel started their small business NEAT in early 2022 in response to continued local shout-outs for cleaning and garden help, with good friend Josh Beaman joining the team later in the same year.

“I thought about the crossroads of my past experience and skills in helping around the neighbourhood, mowing, hedging and landscaping. I saw that there was a huge need by so many locals for high quality, reliable work,” Tialyn said.

“I have always been a bit of an entrepreneur and have wanted to create my own business since working at Drakes, planning and thinking about it while I stacked the shelves every night. So this has been a great and challenging journey so far; it’s so rewarding helping others achieve their goals with their properties.”

The Village Pump reached out to Tialyn after meeting him at a Samford and Districts Chamber of Commerce meeting, and asked if he was up for the challenge of pivoting his business to include a distribution arm.

“Boy has it been a challenge, but we’ve pulled through thanks to the team we’ve now built at FLEAT, run by Josh Beaman. This has been his first big chance at leadership and project management and he has just smashed it out of the park; and all of our amazing riders are locals,” Tialyn said.

“It’s amazed me that we’ve just had so many calls from people keen to get around this beautiful district having fun riding the postie bikes - and getting paid while they do it.”

One of the biggest challenges the new business faced was managing distribution logistics.

“Ensuring that the right number of newspapers were delivered to the right locations, on time and within budget was a big task, and it required a lot of planning and organisation,” Josh said.

“Having the Progress Association (SDPPA) on our side with the delivery of The Village

Pump has been such a huge help. That was a big success that we can now confidently and consistently deliver this newspaper to everyone every two weeks. And we are filling up quickly with all the local businesses wanting flyer distribution.”

The team feels strongly about creating change in the world, with plans to opt for fully electric equipment in the future, keeping their overall carbon footprint as low as possible.

“Something our parents and oldest brother (Grant, Lea and Kaydon from ‘iPlan Financial Services’ here in town) have helped us align on is that life is not all about money and material things. Creating change in this world for the better is far more important and fulfilling,” they said. “The future is to really nail our service and quality here in Samford and to build genuine relationships with everyone.”

What was a hurdle for The Village Pump has become an opportunity for Josh, Tialyn and Sheldon, who remain grateful for the journey they’ve been on so far.

“Just a massive thank you to everyone for their support and for helping us grow and be able to take on young locals, and give them solid skills that will help them throughout the rest of their careers. Whether that’s with us or not, we are creating a team that helps others, clients and staff. So thanks to everyone in Samford, look forward to meeting more of you.”

If you’d like to be part of the FLEAT team, get in touch with Josh on 0491 097 507. They’re looking for riders who are keen to help deliver the fortnightly newspaper as well as other local flyer distribution.

If you’re a business wanting to promote your services locally, FLEAT is the ONLY distributor who covers the Samford and surrounding areas.

AUSTRALIA READS: READING HOUR - THURSDAY 9 MARCH 2023

We invite you to participate in Australia Reads: Reading Hour - a national day dedicated to sharing the joys of books, reading and stories. It’s where the whole country talks about books together.

way I think about how language is used when referring to the vulnerable.

Reading is the best way to increase your exposure to new words learned in context, new ideas and creative ways to look at problems. Look at how Sci Fi has inspired scientific discovery. Many employers seek those who communicate well and think creatively.

You’re Invited to Eat Cake and Talk About Books!

As children we remember the warmth, love and comfort of curling up with our parents or caregivers to listen to and talk about stories being read. Now we hopefully share books with our children, grandchildren and those in our care. This shared reading at home boosts school performance by increasing vocabulary, building good communication skills and strengthening children’s ability to empathise with others. Shared reading is not only the prerogative of children, but also of teens and adults. My mother and I shared books - read the good bits to each other, argued about themes, favourite characters, how stories could be improve - until close to her death. Keeping book conversations going is important in developing communication and thinking skills.

Books that explore the inner lives of characters heighten our ability to understand the feelings and beliefs of others — skills essential for building, navigating and maintaining social relationships. Freedom Only Freedom’s compilation of poetry, storytelling and reportage has changed the

Reading builds an ability to concentrate, while social media decreases concentration. That may be, in part, because people tend to read books more slowly and in more depth than they read digital content. Studies show that many only read headlines as they flick through social media.

If you would like to be involved in Australia Reads: Reading Hour, you can get books from:

• Baffies Oan, our local bookstore in the Lifestyle Centre

• Your school library

• MBRC Mobile Library -Tuesday 7 March, 10.30am to 4.30pm, Cash Ave near the Scouts.

• SDPPA Book Swap at the SCHUB. (Please check if there is a group inside before entering)

Keep an eye on Baffies Oan and The Village Pump Facebook posts so you can join in reading, enjoying and sharing books.

Australia Reads asks Australians to spend one hour of the day reading, sharing and enjoying the stories you love with others, so Baffies Oan Books will be hosting a Community Book Chat.

On 9th March, JOIN US INSTORE, at the Lifestyle Centre – 225 Mount Glorious Rd, with your tea or coffee (we’ll supply the cake) for a free get together to talk all things books.

There will be lucky door prizes of advance reading copies of books - be the first to read an upcoming title!

Meet other book lovers and share your love for your favourite books, pick up some new ideas to add to your TBR pile and enjoy a morning celebrating, writing, reading and all things bookish.

Meet some local authors, find out about our local writing groups and bookclubs and discover what great books are coming in the months ahead.

It’s Free!

The event is free for the whole community but to ensure we have enough space (and of course cake) please register your interest instore or online at https://www.facebook. com/events/851072055990217/?ref=news feed.

CAFÉ LAGARTO CELEBRATES

The team at Cafe Lagarto are proud to be celebrating the one year anniversary of their monthly live music event – Saturday Night Jazz! - on 25th March, 2023.

We all know and love the warm and inviting setting that Cafe Lagarto offers, with covered outdoor dining for up to 85 people. But did you know that in addition to hosting professional musicians over brunch every Sunday for the past 3 years, the first Saturday Night Jazz! event commenced in March 2022?

So - as well as the regular daily breakfast, brunch and lunch meals on offer, you are treated to special evening events twice a month, in a chilled ambient vibe, lit by fairy lights and candles - cooled in summer with gently rotating fans, warmed in winter with gas heating.

The café’s very popular monthly 3-course dinner events, held on the 2nd Friday of every month, have been running for a couple of years now, and feature a different culinary theme each month. However, early last year, front of house management staff excitedly approached owners Natalie and James Ross with a new idea “let’s do live music and cocktails!!”. Although keen, Natalie was wary of not wanting to replicate anything similar in the area. Knowing that jazz was always in her vision for the café’s future, Saturday Night Jazz! was borne.

Held on the last Saturday of every month

commencing at 6.30pm, Saturday Night Jazz! presents three hours of live jazz music featuring professional musicians, many who are local and with many years of experience. You can grab a special cocktail, a wine, beer or cider and your choice of 4 gourmet platters to pre-order.

The café will feature a broader line-up of musicians this year with many established groups performing for the first time. To kick off the celebrations on 25th March, powerhouse vocalist Mardi Gow will perform with husband Rob, as Gemini Blue. These two amazing musicians have had an incredible career, individually and together - performing around the world. They will perform with other musos on the night, as all Saturday Night Jazz! performances are either a trio or a quartet – they choose who to jam with at each event.

For bookings call 3289 3550, or online at www.cafelagarto.com.au and complete the booking form on the events page. Doors open at 6pm until 10pm, $15 cover charge per person. Don’t forget to pre-order platters prior to the evening.

A special anniversary treat for all attending on 25th March will be a complimentary glass of house wine (white/red/sparkling), so you can cheers the Cafe Lagarto team.

2023 SCHOOL LEADERS

On Wednesday February 15th, for the first time in a long time, Ferny Grove SHS was able to invite the entire school population to a combined Junior and Senior Leadership Ceremony. The whole school acknowledged that “behind every young person who believes in themselves is a parent who believed first.”

To truly honour this belief, this year the school asked parents of the School Captains, Vice Captains and Student Representative Council (SRC) Presidents to take part in the Leadership Ceremony by pinning the leadership badges on their child. It was a truly special addition to our ceremony. Our Senior and Junior Subject Leaders were announced and presented with their leadership badges also.

At the end of the ceremony, the most prestigious academic award was presented, the school Dux for 2022, who achieved A levels in all six subjects and was recently awarded a Certificate of Academic Commendation from QCAA.

MOBILE BLACK SPOT TOWERS

In Cedar Creek and Clear Mountain, there are two mobile black spot towers being proposed for installation - one in each suburb. While varying views on these towers exist across these communities, individuals need to be aware of the circumstances leading to this point.

The Federal Government Mobile Black Spot Program was initiated primarily to improve and to extend mobile phone coverage and competition in regional and remote Australia. It achieves this by co-funding new or upgraded telecommunications infrastructure. Residents register areas of poor coverage on the National Black Spot database. These are assessed and the program allocates funding aimed at improving telecommunications in these areas.

Beyond personal, professional, business and educational uses of improved communications, a key aim of the program is to improve community safety for individuals who visit or reside in nominated black spot areas.

Cedar Creek, notably, has 5 locations registered in the National Black Spot database. Clear Mountain has 3. These can be found on data.gov.au by searching for “Community Reports of Poor or No Mobile Coverage”.

In both Cedar Creek and Clear Mountain, multiple sites were investigated as part of the process. Only two possible candidate tower location sites have been identified - one in each suburb. These sites and development applications have moved to the community consultation phase.

As part of the end-to-end process, from black spot registration through to the installation of proposed towers, the community consultation phase gives local

residents the opportunity to voice their thoughts, be they in support of or opposed to the development application.

Clear Mountain community consultation has closed and is awaiting a final decision on the proposed tower. Cedar Creek consultation has opened and will close by March 6, 2023.

Whether residents are making submissions in support of or opposed to the proposed tower, they need to ensure that they remain factual and evidencebased. The decision maker will review all properly made submissions and will make a determination based on facts and impacts, where relevant.

Dickson Sportsperson of the Year | Shai Mayberry

Two-time Special Olympian and active sports-lover Shai Mayberry was recently named 2023 Dickson Sportsperson of the Year. The Mount Samson local is passionately involved in many sports including cricket, soccer, AFL, rugby and swimming.

He is grateful to his coaches, teammates, friends at Down Syndrome Queensland, his support workers and his family, especially his mum Sandra who has supported Shai in all of his endeavours, including his quotes below.

Shai particularly excels in the pool, representing team Queensland at the Special Olympics Australia National Games last year, where he placed 1st in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay, 2nd in the 100m Freestyle, 3rd in the 50m butterfly and 4th in the 50m freestyle.

“I swam my best and we had medal presentation ceremonies. I felt so proud. I enjoyed the opening and closing ceremonies,” Shai said.

Shai trained four times a week throughout the year, attending regular inter-club swimming carnivals.

“One of my support workers Julia does extra one-on-one swimming with me to improve my strokes and turns. I love that being so active is just a regular part of my week. Swimming only breaks for two weeks at Christmas so I swim right through winter,” Shai said.

Shai’s other great sporting passion is cricket, where he was named player of the series in the Tri 21 Series indoor cricket competition. He also carried out 12th man duties for the Coastal Marlins and Darling

Downs Dingoes in the Brisbane Premier League.

“A few years ago Michael Harrison at Down Syndrome QLD offered me a place in a TRI 21 Series invitational match with four players with Down syndrome and four players, some from the Australian Indoor Cricket team in each team. We had lots of fun and I tried really hard to bowl and bat and field the ball and I was very enthusiastic,” Shai said.

Michael encouraged Shai’s participation in the TRI 21 series each year and formed a partnership with the Brisbane Premier League to have a young person with Down Syndrome perform 12th man duties for

some teams.

Each Saturday, Shai also supports the fourth grade men’s team at Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club.

“I warm up with them, run drinks, cheer loudly and give them a pep talk. I love being a part of the team and they love having me there.”

Through his dedication to sport, Shai has made some lifelong friends as well as ensuring he leads a healthy lifestyle.

“I love swimming in Moreton North Special Olympics squad. I’ve made some great friends my own age and we all swim and compete and stay fit together. I even do Barista training with one of my swimming friends,” Shai said.

“Mum says it’s really important for people with Down Syndrome to stay active and eat healthy foods. It’s just my way of life now.”

Sister Miss Edna McLean

Edna McLean b 28/10/1905 to George Jnr McLean and his wife Elizabeth nee Gomersall of Camp Mountain.

Training was carried out at Bundaberg and later Edna gained her Maternal & Child Welfare Certificate.

From 1934 to 1936 Sister Edna McLean, with her friend Sister Bishop, served with the Australian Inland Mission in Birdsville, the historic centre of the Burke and Wills Patrol and the base for the Hospital that John Flynn opened in 1923. Flynn leased an old hotel that served as the Hospital until 1937. “The Sisters at the hospital did tremendous work, caring for the local Birdsville community as well as people living on outlying Stations.”

Miss McLean attended the Methodist Church in Station Street, Samford. Many long term residents will remember Edna as a very quiet and friendly lady.

Edna passed away 19th February 1991 age 85. She was interred in Samford Cemetery beside her parents.

When only tiny, her parent’s house burned to the ground while the children were with their parents packing fruit away from the house. For the greater part of her life, Edna lived in the home her father built following the fire.

Edna attended Samford State School where she received a prize at the end of the 1917 school year for 2nd place in 4th class. Mr Robinson was the teacher.

Edna became a triple certificated Nursing Sister. She did her General Nursing Training at Royal Brisbane Hospital. Her Midwifery

In 1944 Edna went to Sydney where she studied Chiropody. On returning to Brisbane she started her practice in the old Pennys Building in the city, later the building was known as Coles Building. “Sister McLeans Chiropody Service” was a legend. Employing others to assist her, Edna always played a vital role in ‘the rooms’ until she sold the business just several years prior to her death in 1991.

Edna often travelled by railmotor to and from Camp Mountain station before the line closed in 1955.

Sister Edna McLean gave her services free of charge to the foot clinic for aged and invalid pensioners, opened at Enoggera Methodist Church on Thursday 3rd July 1947 as part of Rev Ralph Heaton’s Community Activities Programme. Edna continued the weekly service for 35 years.

However, given her passion and phenomenal efforts in these sectors, it’s little wonder she came to the notice of those around her. Franceska has also used her life experience to release a new book, Under the Boab Tree, where she recounts her mother’s activism in standing up for human rights in 1950s South Africa.

As the founding member and driving force behind the establishment of the Alzheimer’s Association in Queensland and Australia in the early 1980s, Franceska spent nearly 40 years as a campaigner, researcher and speaker for people with dementia and their carers.

Franceska also worked as a social worker, counsellor, educator, planner, advocate and researcher, setting up services in India, Latin America, Asia, Singapore and Europe. In her role as Director of Social Work Department at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, she was the first social worker in Queensland to work with HIV and AIDS patients at the hospital and in the community.

“I walked through the emergency department and noticed patients with AIDS had their beds in corridors and not in the main emergency treating area. I questioned, ‘why are their beds here?’ It became obvious to me that with this infection, staff were apprehensive; so little was known about this disease. Patients were marginalised and not treated with the same considerations,” Franceska said. Continued over

Franceska joined prominent immunologists to give talks to students, nurses, doctors and allied health professionals, as well as appearing on TV and radio to educate the general public about the condition. Franceska also created HIV patient admission and discharge protocols to ensure they were not ostracised.

Franceska’s childhood was paramount in lighting a fire within to stand up for those facing social inequity.

“My mother’s strength fighting apartheid and cruel working conditions in South Africa is exemplary for me,” she said. “My mother didn’t want people’s pity, especially when my little sister was born with Down Syndrome and being severely disabled. She wanted services and respectful support.”

Franceska chose social work as a profession, seeking social justice, equity of opportunity, and assisting the most disadvantaged.

“Being a social worker in Africa is a recipe for being a rebel. How can a socially conscious person ignore all the injustice, poverty, abuse and profiteering of others?” she said.

Franceska’s memoir, Under the Boab Tree, details the consequences her mother faced for speaking out against the human rights abuses she both witnessed and endured herself.

“Even though my book recounts some years of pain and suffering we endured, it is also my mother’s and my search for truth and justice, and eventually our quest for love and to live with a loving heart that has prevailed,” Franceska said.

“We were and are tenacious and the courage of my mother in a time when South Africa was steeped in violence and exploitation in Zambia rife. Under The Boab Tree is a testament to her work and parts of my life,” she said.

“My mother is one of Africa’s unsung

heroes. The stories of the male freedom fighters and trade unionists have been heard. It was time to honour and tell her story and mine.”

Under The Boab Tree can be purchased online: www.franceskajordan.com.au or from Baffies Oan Books at the Lifestyle Centre, Samford Valley. You can meet Franceska at Baffies Oan on Saturday 18 March at 3pm for book reading and signing.

I SEE YOU, YOU SEE ME

After an international call out for submissions, local Samford and Strathpine residents and collaborators Pia Robinson from @theculturecrusader and artist Martin Edge were selected to be part of this year’s World Science Festival’s ‘Curiocity Brisbane’ major public art installation in their inclusive, innovative, arts engagement.

Curiocity Brisbane celebrates science, tech and art with outdoor installations and a program of tours, workshops and Cuirous Conversations. And this year you can experience the work by local artist, Martin Edge within the Picnic Island Green at South Bank Parklands.

This inclusive arts engagement brings to life, through augmented reality and animation, the incredible paintings by Martin.

“My artworks are like a ‘memory jog’ of each adventure, but I also like to use my own imagination and creativity to paint the scene how I see or remember it,” said Martin.

Martin identifies as on the Autism Spectrum. He creates artwork that allows us to see the world according to Martin. Through this reveal we can see and experience Martin’s perspective, enabling him to be profiled as a role model for aspiring artists and others who may connect with him.

Martin is a proud ambassador for Autism Queensland, and his artwork captures and reflects his perspective of the world through recreating memorable moments and recollections, filtered through his imagination. His art-making process of reconnecting collages of memory-fragments enables us to see what Martin sees - the wonderment of our world from the mundane to the whimsical.

Through this installation at the Southbank Parklands, viewers experience a number of Martin’s artworks upscaled into playscapes set within Southbank’s Picnic Garden. This includes his latest artwork - Martin’s Painting Day - that explores the artist’s most sacred and private place - his studio.

For the first time ever, Martin’s artwork will come to life through activating this new artwork via Augmented Reality, allowing viewers to delve deeper into Martin’s world.

See the artwork at Curiocity Brisbane from 22 March – 2 April 2023.

New initiatives help launch a ‘Reconciliation Walk’.

Several different initiatives at Samford Valley Steiner School have come together in beautiful harmony. Back in 2021 the idea of a ‘Reconciliation Walk’ through the school’s bushland was imagined, where a ‘National Park’ type trail would be created through the bush, acknowledging Australian history and the timeline indigenous Australians have followed from pre-history to the modern day via information plaques along the way.

This bushland would also undertake regeneration by removing invasive and introduced species and through the planting of natives, endemic to the Samford Valley, creating a food forest and supporting habitat for local native wildlife.

This lofty plan was finally started this term with the introduction of a new high school initiative called the ‘Vertical Classroom’. During the final two periods every Friday, all high school students are split into 6 mixed age level groups. The Outdoor classroom group started work on the pathway for the ‘Reconciliation walk’. Reusing the school’s green waste, one team used a woodchipper, creating the mulch to form the path. Another team took cardboard from the school’s recycling bin and laid it on the trail as a form of weed suppressor.

In this project, the students are learning regeneration and horticultural skills, working with multiple age groups and building leadership skills. They also work with the site team to manage the green waste on-site for a useful purpose.

Andy Currey, the high school teacher leading the project says, “It symbolises the school’s commitment to truth telling and Indigenous allyship, creates a beautiful, rich space that supports native flora and fauna and highlights the continuing connection Indigenous people hold toward land, water and community.”

SHOWING KINDNESS

On Thursday 16th February, Samford State School celebrated Kindness Day by wearing orange. The teachers and leadership team were at the front gate for school drop off at 7.40am to greet students and parents. It was such a great atmosphere with music and balloons and so many happy smiling faces. Kindness Day is about spreading random acts of kindness and to brighten up someone’s day. Even the school tuckshop, the Hungry Owl, jumped

on board and had orange star cookies and orange jelly cups to go around.

Mardi Gras in Samford

I don’t speak French but I have it on good authority that “Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday”. “Fat Tuesday” is another name for “Shrove Tuesday” which is commonly known as Pancake Tuesday.

Shrove Tuesday tends to sneak up on us every year. The first hint is often the appearance of extra pancake mix and maple syrup on the shelves of supermarkets. As has become our practice, we have taken to giving away pancakes outside Drakes each year on Shrove Tuesday.

So, why pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Liturgical Season of Lent, a period of extra discipline (which may include fasting) leading up to Good Friday and Easter. As part of that discipline, in times past Christians would rid their pantries of the foods they wanted to avoid during their Lenten fast. Milk, eggs, flour as well as meat would be avoided during lent. All this led to a big cook up and what better use for flour, eggs and milk than to make pancakes and to share pancakes

with hungry passers-by. I hope you had the chance to stop by for a free pancake.

These days our Lenten observance is marked by study and discussion groups. This year at St Paul’s we are using the study guide produced by the Anglican Board of Mission entitled, “The Imaginary Doorway, studies and stories for the Gospel of inclusion”. We meet Tuesday evenings at 7pm in the Parish Hall, 12 Mt Samson Road. Regular Sunday Services – 7.30am and 9am.

Motorcycle ride group gathers at Samford AMPOL on the first Saturday of the month for an 8:30am or 9am departure. Destinations vary and riders of all experience levels are welcome.

SPYs – St Paul’s Youth: 3rd Friday of the month, 6pm-9pm for an evening which always includes food and a craft activity. Samford Valley Market: 2nd Saturday of the month, 7am – Midday.

Samford Fresh Food Market: 4th Saturday of the month, 7am – Midday. All Things Nice: Mondays 9am – midday, Parish Hall.

Study Group: Midday Fridays in the Church.

Let’s Talk about Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition that you have likely heard about or know of someone impacted from it. This is because in Australia, one in five people over the age of 45 have a joint diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a disease pathology that impacts the entire joint and is characterised by a breakdown of cartilage and bony changes of the joints. Despite the commonality, there is no cure. However, there are numerous ways to manage the condition.

A total knee replacement is often an option that is offered to patients. However, an estimated 25% of people have been found to undergo inappropriate joint replacement surgeries that present with minimal symptoms, reduced radiographic abnormalities and unrealistic expectations.

So How Can Knee Osteoarthritis be managed?

Samford Support Network

Working together to help local community members

Community Supporting Community

The Samford Support Network (SSN) has always been very grateful for the support we have received from community members, businesses and other community organisations. One such organisation is the Samford Joey Scouts. The Samford Joey Scouts is for boys and girls from 5 - 7 years old. Their motto is HOP-Help other people and that is exactly what they have been doing for the SSN.

For many years the SSN has delivered food hampers and Christmas gifts to local community members we support. We have been able to do this before Covid-19 by collecting donations of food and gifts from our local community. Since covid we have continued to do this, but we now use donated funds to purchase items to make up some small gifts for Christmas. Our volunteers purchase, package and deliver

these gifts over the Christmas period. We always tell our recipients that these gifts are from our local community to let them know they are being thought of and cared about.

The highlight of the gift is the special Christmas cards made by the Joey scouts. It is the pinnacle on top and the smiles given to us by the recipients is very touching and humbling. Each year the Samford Scout Group Leader, David Reed, organises the design with his leaders and the Joey scouts make 80 cards. Each design is different and unique, we’ve had reindeers made using handprints, Christmas trees using paint samples and last year we had decorations and Christmas trees using glitter balls and glue guns.

Last year some members of the SSN management team had the privilege of

helping the Joeys make some of the Christmas cards and it was a fun and interactive time.

We are so grateful to link in with our local Joeys to help connect different groups in our community. Thank you to David, all the leaders and mostly to the Joeys that helped bring some love and Christmas happiness to other community members.

Creative Samford Inc would like to wish all Village Pump readers a very happy New Year! 2023 is off to a flying start as we find ourselves already in March at the release of this edition of The Village Pump, and we look forward to it being an exciting year of showcasing the work of our members.

We ended 2022 with our Art Fair at the Samford Showgrounds in November, and it was so lovely to see, and be supported by, so many of the Samford and surrounds community. Thank you!

At our February meeting, Roman Buzianczuk took us into the fascinating world of lichens. There are over 400 species in Australia, which are classified based on the fungal component. There are 3 main forms: crustose (flat); foliose (leaf-like) and fruticose (shrub-like). Their presence is a sign of good air quality. Lichens play an important role in breaking down rocks and are a vital component in the environment.

Have you noticed an increase in aircraft noise recently?

The Samford Area Aircraft Action Group invite all people impacted by aircraft noise/pollution to attend our monthly meeting, held on the first Wednesday of the month, 7pm at the SCHUB.

Over the last month members of SAAAG have continued their good work in trying to minimise impacts over the Samford Valley area, including:

• Working hard with the Brisbane Flight Path Community alliance (BFPCA) on submissions to the federal government white paper. This document will dictate the long term operating plan for all airports in Australia including curfews and flight number limits. We are happy to contribute to the BFPCA action in this area.

• Contacting Federal Minister Catherine King, Aircraft Noise Ombudsman, and others regarding the need for a federal body to replace the now disbanded Brisbane Airport Post Implementation Review Advisory Forum (BAPAF – the bipartisan committee that was keeping an

eye on the performance and governance of Airservices Australia). The Minister was also questioned about her refusal to meet with representatives from BFPCA on her recent Brisbane visit.

• Peter Dutton’s Dickson survey has been completed with multiple requests for reduced/ improved flightpaths over Samford Valley and the need for stronger, informed representation for Dickson on BACACG - Brisbane Airport Community Aviation Consultation Group. There is still time for you to complete this survey online. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ DicksonsBiggestSurvey

As you can see, the group continue to work hard with multiple stakeholders. Let’s hope that in 2023 we can continue to make progress in minimising the impact of aircraft in the Samford Valley area.

We look forward to seeing you at a meeting and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any suggestions or concerns via email: ContactSAAAG@gmail.com

Pitch Perfect Programming

From a young age, Josh Beaman was fixated on fixing old cassette decks and tape players. Now aged 19, this is a skill he’s rebooted into creating his very own speaking and singing robot.

“The premise of an inanimate object moving in such a way to create the illusion of life has always fascinated me,” Josh said.

Given the niche nature of robotics, Josh embarked on a massive amount of research to breathe life into his spark of an idea. Where Josh was rusty on how to piece his robot together, his dad stepped in with some much appreciated welding skills.

“Eventually after almost a year of collecting information, photographs and old documentation about previous robots, I came to my father (who could weld) with my dream and we set off on our father-son journey down this path that led to three renditions of the robot; in total taking us nearly five years,” Josh said.

“The first rendition was very simple and did not look quite right. A lot of the movements were quite janky, and he had no legs. I had some feedback on this and in turn, it fuelled me to progress further.”

“The second generation was built and everyone I showed seemed to be interested, but it still wasn’t exactly what I had envisioned. I was on a roll so I decided I would take this momentum and turn it into the third rendition, something I could say was perfect!”

Josh’s robot has been designed to talk into a microphone, and can be programmed to entertain in different ways such as singing or telling jokes. It moves using pneumatic cylinders and solenoid valves that run off compressed air.

“I have always wanted to have my robot perform in public for an audience. The final idea behind creation of it would be that I would eventually rent him out to local venues or shopping centres and share knowledge behind him as he talks and sings,” Josh said.

“I have always had a deep passion for

this kind of work and I would love to pass it on to future budding robot creators who could benefit from inspiration.”

While Josh has been the driving force behind this creation, he is grateful for the help he received along the way.

“I’d like to thank my dad for all the support along this journey. It’s been such a fun and amazing project and I’ve enjoyed every second of it,” he said.

If anyone is interested in hiring out an attraction that will draw viewers’ attention and get people talking, give Josh a call on 0491 097 507 or email: beamanrobotics@ gmail.com.

Samford Area Mens Shed

There are many days in the calendar that almost everyone circles as a day of significance or importance. Circled days are usually birthdays, a special event, or an anniversary. Almost every man in the world knows what’s in store if he forgets to circle and remember the day of his loved one’s birthday or anniversary. St. Valentine’s Day was on 14th February. On that day, the sale of flowers (especially red roses) went into overdrive and may the Lord have mercy on the man who came home empty handed on that day!

At Samford Area Men’s Shed (better known as SAMS), there are also significant days that are circled on the calendar. The most commonly known days are Christmas, Easter, Foundation Day and the monthly guest speaker night of course. However, there is another vitally important day that must be observed at around the same time every year. SAMS conducts an Annual General Meeting (AGM) at which a new Executive Committee is elected and a new chairman, secretary and treasurer are also

elected. This year, Phil Walters has taken up the reins as Chairman while George Reid has accepted the task of Secretary and Les Cannard has once again stepped into the role of Treasurer. These three men are more than amply supported and assisted by the other Executive Committee members: Garry Fielding, Les Maher, Gary Podger and Stephen Gibbens and all of the other men at SAMS.

Men of Samford and surrounds, 2023 is a great year to see what SAMS is all about. Why not come along and have a look. Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. Monthly bushcare

We had a solid turnout for our first official MBRC-led bushcare session on Sunday 12 February. Although it was a very hot afternoon, the low humidity made conditions tolerable to work in the shade. We weeded around the young trees and shrubs in the riverbank planting and along the top of the bank. Some of the re-sprouting Guinea Grass was already well over 1m tall, even though we had removed it all on our last visit. It was also exciting to discover that a young Bopple Nut tree (Macadamia ternifolia) had produced nuts just 7 years after planting. After the hard work, we were rewarded by a fabulous afternoon tea, kindly provided by our new bushcare officer, Debbie.

Our next bushcare session will be held at 2 pm on Sunday 12 March. We are hoping for another good turnout.

Bird Survey

We carried out our latest monthly bird survey on 30 January, when our birdwatchers recorded 53 species. Highlights included seeing about 30 White-throated Needletails hawking overhead, a Restless Flycatcher perched on a dead silky oak and a Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove flying over the riverbank planting. The most unusual sighting was of a pair of Pale-vented Bushhens flying across the river in the rainforest remnant beyond the waterhole.

DICKSON NOTES

A busy few weeks!

We are well and truly into the swing of the things for 2023. In the last few weeks, I’ve been busy attending local events such as Leadership Investitures at schools, events at sporting clubs and organisations, visiting small businesses and of course we held our annual Dickson Awards on Australia Day.

The new parliamentary year also started on 6 February, so I’ll continue to hold the Albanese Labor Government to account on their promises to Australians and support outcomes in the best interest of our country and community.

For regular updates on what’s happening in Dickson, you can sign up to my regular eNewsletter at www.peterdutton.com.au, or head over and like my Facebook page.

School leaders

Well done to all the school leaders in both our local primary and high schools who received Senior Student and Student Leader badges – I wish you all the very best for your year ahead.

Congratulations Sophie!

Congratulations to Albany Creek local Sophie Hebron on winning the Girls’ 14 Years 5km event at this year’s Australian

Open Water Championship in Busselton WA. It is a fantastic achievement and I look forward to seeing what Sophie will do in the future.

The Biggest Survey

Thank you to everyone who completed my ‘Biggest Survey’ either by post or online. Your feedback will help me to better understand your needs, priorities and what’s important to you and our community. Backing small businesses

and jobs

I’m regularly out and about in Dickson talking to small businesses about the issues that matter to them and offering my help in any way possible. I want to see more local business opportunities created in our community so more people will have jobs.

Just recently I had the pleasure of visiting Jason and his team at Zapt Industries (www. zaptind.com.au) in Brendale and Maureen at Kupidabin Wilderness in Mount Samson (www.kupidabin.org). If you would like me to visit your business, please get in touch via email – contact details are below.

What’s important to you?

There are many important issues our country faces, including the rising cost of living, so please send me an email at peter. dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or call on 3205 9977 if there is anything I can do to help or any local issues you’d like to raise. You can also pop into the office at Strathpine in person during business hours.

DIGITAL DEVICES NEEDED

Not-for-profit donation platform GIVIT is requesting donations to support Queenslanders living with a disability to stay connected through digital technology. GIVIT is working with over 40 organisations across Moreton Bay to facilitate the donation

of digital devices for people in the region.

GIVIT Queensland Engagement Officer Danielle Draper said that the focus of the appeal is to ensure people living with a disability have access to digital devices for day-to-day needs such as Telehealth appointments, MyGov or Centrelink services, and to stay connected with support networks.

“We’re all aware of how much of our daily lives are conducted digitally, but sadly many people living with a disability face barriers to accessing suitable devices,” said Danielle.

“Donations from this appeal will help people living with a disability access support services, manage their personal finances and banking, conduct online tuition and importantly stay connected with friends and family.”

“Items that are most needed include laptops, PCs, tablets and smart phones. We’re encouraging anyone that has a digital device in good working order that they no longer need, to donate it to this appeal. Items can also be funded with 100% of donated funds received by GIVIT used to purchase requested items.”

GIVIT has partnered with the Queenslanders with a Disability Network to help Queenslanders living with a disability access digital technology equipment. The partnership will match people living with a disability across parts of Queensland to donated computers, laptops, mobile devices and tablets, as well as items that meet an individual’s accessibility requirements.

Samford Museum

Just 100 years ago, a photo of Samford banana growers’ excursion to Toowoomba featured in the Daily Mail 10th February 1923 paper. (pictured) Some of the travellers have been identified. We welcome any suggestions as to other names. An enlarged photo can be seen at Samford Museum Sundays and Wednesdays. A copy of the photo was loaned for Samford Sate Schools Centenary in 1972 by Len Adermann, a banana grower of Camp Mountain.

So - what was happening within the banana industry around Samford in the 1920s? A search of trove newspapers gives some varying insights into this and other fruit growing and the railway.

In spite of The Highlands Soldier Settlement being renowned for bananas, a report in November 1921 tells us that some growers and their families were on the verge of starvation owing to their credit being stopped at local stores. What caused this hardship appears to be that heavy frosts during the winter made their blocks unsuitable for bananas. They contended they were entitled to compensation of another block that would give them some chance of success. The Minister for Lands was to offer them the opportunity to inspect new lands elsewhere that were being opened up for banana growing.

The February 1922 meeting of the Samford Farmers Assn with about 20 members attending was chaired by the President Mr Frank Burtt. Growers Burtt and Andrews, who had been delegates at the Banana Growers at the South Queensland

Fruit Society conference, presented a report re fixing standards for packaging bananas.

As an excursion from Brisbane to Dayboro was planned for February 26, the meeting recommended that arrangements be made for refreshments to be available for passengers alighting at Samford and for members of the Assn and Samford residents to meet the train and give information as to places available for picnics or places of interest to visitors.

A district excursion to Sandgate planned for March 11 looked like being a success. School children to travel free.

The meeting was informed that trial shipments of pineapples to England were being despatched.

A September 1923 Courier Mail report listed produce, in cases, loaded at Samford for Melbourne in August 1923 was 1084

bananas; 595 tomatoes, 191 beans, 48 pawpaw, 8 pineapples 3 peas, 2 squash, 2 marrows.

Mr HJ Digweed was voted President of the Samford Farmers and Local Producers Assn at their AGM in August 1923. Vice President, Mr AJ Marks; Treasure Mr E Guldbransen and Secretary, Mr J C Andrews. A vote of thanks was moved for retiring President, Mr Burtt.

You can learn more about the local history at the Samford Museum in Station Street on Wednesdays and Sundays, 10am – 4pm.

OUR LOCAL HISTORY

THE GHOST TRAIN AND THE SCARLET MOON Jack

Roney

On Labour Day 1982, the 35th anniversary of Queensland’s worst rail disaster at Camp Mountain where sixteen lives were lost and many seriously injured, three boys from Samford State School watch a ‘super-blue-blood-moon’, a phenomenon which only occurs every thirty-five years. They later decide to explore first the Yugar Rail Tunnel then the crash site to look for souvenirs.

A weird steam train noise and a wave of energy frightens the trio. One of the boys vanishes without a trace, leaving only bubbling bitumen where he once stood. Suspicion shadows the remaining duo, friendships shatter. Thirty-five years later on Labour Day, 2017, as the super-blueblood-moon appears again, another of the group disappears and there is a baffling

shift in recorded history. Toby McIntyre, the last of the group, struggles to uncover the truth behind his friends’ disappearances, exactly thirty-five years apart.

This is a book of surprising twists, with an ending that is both satisfying and thought provoking. How do we define friendship and love? How do we cope with loss? Make sure you carefully follow Paul O’Sullivan’s clever illustrations which add a special dimension to the work.

If you are fascinated by speculative fiction with an enticing tie to local history, if you love finding references to places you know in novels, if you are enthralled by the possibility of parallel time, time slips and possible changes in the ripples of history, then this is a good read. There are some places where unnecessary details are included and some places where conversations are too formal, not in line with the functional language of the time, but this fascinating work of Roney’s is a must read for every Samfordite, history buff, train tragic: anyone who loves a good story. Though listed as a young adult, coming of age novel, this work deserves a much wider audience.

NICHE Jane Ireland

A Magical journey through time.

Niche is the final, recently published novel in local author Jane Ireland’s Crying Tree Series and follows on from Emigree. The standalone duology is set in Brisbane and New South Wales between the early 1940s and late 1960s.

While Emigree’s main protagonist is Grace, Niche focuses on her dynamic daughter who dabbles in her mother’s unpredictable supernatural power, beyond. Jane explains, “Beyond works with Nature, enabling those affected to acquire prescience, among other tricks. Stuck between what she thinks she wants, and what the supernatural, and Nature, decide must be, it was natural for Niche to focus on Fleur because she had the most to lose if she continued down her self-destructive path.”

In French, niche means to make a nest. The nest and chicks in the book represent

new life, new beginnings. Fleur combats her own demons, and those of other people, in the search for her own nest, her place of safety and belonging.

Niche is vibrant and suspenseful. Jane hopes readers will discover what one editor called gorgeous, lush, and playful prose: the perfect vessel for the tension and tragedy the book contained.

Jane doesn’t shy away from exploring traumatic themes, but she does so in gentle ways, through modern magic realism, injecting mystical elements into real-world settings. As the magic in Emigree did with Grace, the magic in Niche shines a light on Fleur’s character. Jane says, “As a reader, I like to see uncomfortable or calamitous scenes written with a soft touch. I have deliberately left the writing in such scenes organic, how they came about as I wrote them. For me this is cathartic, authentic writing.

Jane hopes readers will empathise with Fleur’s journey, become more aware of their intuition and Nature, and perhaps even find magic in everyday things often taken for granted.

Having been a nurse and a tutor, Jane now devotes herself to writing fiction. Inspired by her supportive writers’ group: Writers Rendezvous in Dayboro, she has spoken at Avid Reader at West End, and the Independent Australian Authors Symposium in 2020. She was awarded Highly Commended, and Runner-up, in writing competitions, and been favourably compared to Annie Proulx in her earlier writing days.

Jane will be signing copies of Niche at Baffies Oan Books in Samford Valley from 3pm on Saturday 25 March where you can also purchase both books.

BOOK REVIEWS

MARCH - NEW RELEASES

March sees the long awaited release of a new novel by Booker Prize Winning author Eleanor Catton. Set in the beautiful wilderness of New Zealand, Birnam Wood, follows a small group of guerilla gardeners who unwittingly decide to expand their operations to a piece of land that also contains valuable minerals deep underground. This is a psychological thriller that raises questions of justice, environmentalism, ethics and good oldfashioned socialist activism.

For the historical fiction fan, Victoria Mackenzie has produced a slim little gem that brings together the stories of two disparate women in 1413; one an anchoress secretly writing within her self-imposed isolation, the other a long suffering wife and mother who hears God speaking to her. This is a fictional work drawn from the writings of these two women – some of the earliest records of women’s lives written in their own hand. For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy On My Little Pain is a mesmerizing and evocative read.

Dominic Smith’s Return to Valetto will be a hit with Italophiles and war history fans alike. Stefano thoroughly enjoyed the story of separate contemporary characters searching out the family secrets that bring them both to an abandoned Italian village and the shadows of the partisans, resistance fighters and the stories of loyalty and betrayal that have echoes through to the present.

If you’re in the mood for some speculative/ science fiction Camp Zero tells the story of a not too distant future where the rich have walled themselves into a floating city to ride out the increasing temperatures and water levels. While the rest struggle for survival, scientists and entrepreneurs search out

the possibilities in the cold north, but whose vision is the ‘right’ one? Where everyone has an agenda, how do you find the way forward? Michelle Min Sterling paints a fascinating and original portrait of a world affected by heat and the human search for a future.

PAST PERFECT Danielle Steel

Sybil and Blake Gregory live a predictable, comfortable, easygoing life with their three children in Manhattan. Their lives change drastically when Blake accepts a promotion as CEO of a new company starting in San Francisco. Tensions arise as he accepts the position and his offer on the new house in San

BOOK REVIEWS

Francisco is accepted, without consultation with his wife. Sybil finds she has no choice but to trust her husband’s instincts, accept his decisions and follow his lead.

Little do they know they are not the sole occupants of the house; the spirits of those past are very much alive in the present day and are seeking to be a part of the Gregory’s current lives. Past Perfect is about co-existence and co-occupancy. Can both families (100 years apart) share the same space and live in harmony with one another?

Past Perfect is not a ghostly story, but rather a story of love, friendship and accepting a very strange phenomenon. It is about building relationships with those both past and present. The Gregory’s decide to keep their interactions with the past occupants of their new home to themselves and the former family members (or “ghosts”) do not appear when guests are over.

I must admit this is the first Danielle Steel novel I have read. I enjoyed reading it immensely. The storyline kept me engaged, wanting to discover more about the house occupants – regardless of the century they lived in. The story didn’t have a climax, but steadily continued to reveal more about the characters and their lives throughout the book. It was a gentle and pleasurable read.
