VILLAGE PUMP UPDATES AIRCRAFT NOISE UPDATE Has the increased air traffic over Samford Valley impacted on your serenity? If so, then now is the time to have your voice heard. The more of us that speak out, the more we will be noticed. As a result of the first BAPAF (Brisbane Airport Post Implementation Review Advisory Forum) quarterly report, several noise reduction opportunities have been identified. Airservices Australia has agreed to a twelve month trial of the following BAPAF recommendations: • Extension of over the bay operations (SODPROPS) from 6am to 8am Saturday’s and Sunday’s, weather and pilot permitting. • The appointment of TRAX - a United Kingdom based firm to independently review and make improvement recommendations across aspects of flight path design and air space operations. • Twelve month trial of full length runway departures. • Change of departure practices requiring aircraft to remain on Standard Instrument Departure until they reach 10,000-12,000 feet. So, what does this mean for Samford District residents? We may notice some changes to noise levels and aircraft operations across the district. Previous opportunities to express concerns and make comments may have passed, but you can still have a voice about this issue. Notably, the ongoing PIR (Post Implementation Review) Process is complaints driven and relies on regular ongoing feedback from local community members, if we are to have an impact on decisions made regarding aircraft operations and noise over our district. The squeaky wheels get the grease!
NEXT SDPPA MEETING Wednesday 20th April 2022 Samford Community Hub (SCHUB) 2204 Mt Samson Road, Samford 7pm start. All welcome. Further information: secretary@samfordprogress.org.au. Affected members of the community still need to “make some noise about the noise”. Noise Complaints can be made to Airservices Australia via the online complaints form, which can be accessed at https://complaints-au.emsbk.com/asa5 With the Federal election looming, there are several important questions to be asked of local members/candidates. We need to make aircraft noise a real issue in this electorate. The questions to ask are: • Do you commit to having BAPAF’s appointment continued past the current September deadline? This would enable ongoing monitoring of Airservices Post Implementation Review. • Do you support the Brisbane Airport Curfew and Demand Management Bill 2022 introduced on 14th February 2022? • What actions are you willing to take to support community concerns regarding increased aircraft noise over the Samford District? Remember, international flights are only going to ramp up, which means many more planes coming into Brisbane over our beautiful district. The Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance BFPCA is the leading group representing all of the Brisbane communities affected by aircraft flight paths and associated noise. Their website and Facebook pages contain information, guidance, useful links and suggestions. Mark Power & Tess Bignell

LOCAL NEWS LOCAL BUSINESS WINS AWARD FOR GLOBAL ENTERPRISE Before COVID-19, global supply chains was not a usual conversation topic, but recent empty supermarket shelves has made many of us realise the behind the scenes efforts of goods delivery. Within this sphere, customs brokerage specialist 3DL recently won Customs Broker of the Year as part of the 2021 DCN Shipping and Maritime Logistics awards. 3DL Founder, Director and local resident Chris Roberts, acknowledged the enormity of the award within the shipping industry. “This is a career highlight. It does not get any bigger in our industry than this; being recognised and judged by independent judges and client nominations,” Chris said. “Beating multi-national corporations in the process of getting here is the icing on the cake of seven years very hard work, occasional sleepless nights and financial pressures,” he said. 3DL is a non-freight forwarding Licensed Customs Brokerage and Trade / Tariff Consultancy. It is the only business model of its kind to have achieved Australian Trusted Trader Status, allowing 3DL to minimises duty and GST for its customers by working closely with regulators. The company’s continued investment in automations and integrations further reduces administration costs. After moving his family to Samford Valley, Chris also moved his business here in 2018. Despite operating in the shipping industry, 3DL has thrived on Samford’s Main St. “My wife Toni, daughter (singular at this stage) and father all lived locally and had begun working for the business. This saved the four of us over 48 hours a week in travel time, and made the decision easy,” Chris said. “It has been a blessing in more ways than

one, with our last four new team members and trainees sourced locally and from word of mouth – thanks Andrew Green of BWS.” When not dealing with customs lawyers, Chris may be spotted playing in the Chronical Cup Cricket competition or representing Samford as part of Village Bowls. Being based here has allowed both his family life and business to flourish. “At 3DL we operate under the ethos that our first and most important roles in life are those of husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, family members, friends and colleagues,” Chris said. “Personally, I run this business with the unreserved attitude of, if you look after your people, help them look after their people, they will look after your business. So far it is evident this approach has hit the nail on the head!” This prestigious industry award is a testament to Chris and his team’s hard work and ability to follow through on an innovative idea no matter where a business is based. “I’d like to think this award proves to anyone living in Samford Valley with an
Well done to Kelly, Chloe, Charlotte, Frankie and Lily, who represented the club in March at Runcorn Combined Training and Dressage Day. The grounds have had another overhaul by all the amazing parents and volunteers after the floods and are looking fabulous and green. Despite the lower paddock being taken over by the creek, the club was fortunate enough not to have too much damage from the floods. Next Muster 8am April 10th. Spectators welcome.

LOCAL NEWS 500 plants get a new home in Samford Village Samford Landcare held another successful tree planting event on 19th March with members of the Samford community coming together to plant over 500 plants. Alongside Cash Avenue Samford, volunteers from Samford Landcare are continuing to lead the regeneration of the landscape and this latest planting work featured all native plants replacing overgrown verge areas. A generous grant from the SDPPA enabled the purchase of required plants and Moreton Bay Regional Council kindly contributed mulch to cover the planting areas. With the right amount of care and attention, this area should be of benefit for many generations to come. It is planned to add a seating area under a lovely shade tree in the new garden, so donations of available outdoor garden bench seating are being sought if anyone can help with this. If you can donate seating, or would like to know more about Samford Landcare, please go to www.samfordlandcare.org.au.
The students, staff and parents of Samford Kindy have been busy adding new garden beds with vegetables, fruit, herbs and plenty of bush tucker. The Kindy was very grateful to receive a Woolworths Junior Landcare grant worth $1500. Children and families have been involved in growing and nurturing plants and developing an appreciation of growing produce sustainably. The bush tucker plants are also helping us to further our knowledge and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander plant use. Part of the grant was dedicated to improving the bee and fairy garden. New hotels for the bees, additional bee attracting plants and gorgeous signs and musical decorations were added to the sensory space. Parent volunteers put together the
garden beds and prepared the garden areas before the children assisted with planting and nurturing the plants. Kindy Director, Sue Meek said “This project brought the kindy community together, enhanced our local environment, and enabled our kindy children to participate in sustainable practices whilst learning more about plant growth and native bees.”

SAMFORD EDIBLE GARDEN TRAIL UPDATE
BANANA - HERB OR TREE? Our warm lush subtropical climate is perfect for growing bananas and they most likely loved the recent rains (but, like us, not the flooding) and are flourishing with banana blossoms and the beginnings of a great harvest.
Let’s run through banana stats. Bananas are classed as a herb (not a tree), and there is a wild banana (Musa ingens) that can grow up to 15 metres high, making it the tallest herb. Their fruit are classed as berries, which is very confusing! Banana seeds are sterile so they must be propagated, which for us gardeners means separating a side shoot, or ‘pup’ along with a bit of the root. Full of vitamin B6, antioxidants and
potassium, they offer a variety of health benefits, are versatile to cook, as well as being extremely easy to grow once you can cater to their needs. Plus, they suffer little from insect predation due to their thick skins. Another winner for the lazy gardener! To generate good conditions for bananas, they need to be in raised soil to avoid any waterlogging, and have access to both regular water and highly nutritious decaying matter. Many people create banana circles where they place bananas on a raised circle of soil (like a circular swale) about 2m minimum in diameter, and then cover the inner bowl area with wet paper or cardboard, and fill with anything that will decay such as grass clippings, hedge trimmings (with some garden lime [calcium carbonate] to break it down), manures and compost to create a rich feeding bowl for the bananas to access. As this decays, you can keep filling it up. Bananas will tend to flower on the outer edge and if you use dwarf bananas, they will be far easier to harvest. There are several unusual and tasty varieties out there but currently only a few are dwarf. Don’t overdo the number of bananas as they usually readily sucker and can multiply before you know it. Removing bananas that have already produced and keeping suckers to one or two per plant will help control this. And, as a bonus, you can also inter-plant pawpaw, sweet potato, pumpkins, tomatoes, or passionfruit (grow up the Banana), and comfrey (cut leaves and add to compost bowl) around the circle, and ginger or taro inside. As any backyard banana grower will know, once ripe you really need to move fast to process all those hands of bananas, so read on for a tried-and-true recipe that is also freezer friendly. Like mangoes, bananas are fantastic in smoothies, and it’s simple to slice up banana on to a tray, freeze and then pack them tightly into freezer bags as a base

Recipe by Vanessa Spotswood Ingredients: 75ml buttermilk 120g butter, softened but not melted 120g sugar 1 large egg 1 tsp bi-carb/baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract or essence 167g plain flour 2-4 large bananas, peeled and roughly chopped into 1cm wide slices (the riper, the better – black bananas impart the most flavour!) Method: Preheat oven to 170deg. Make buttermilk, if not using store-bought (see note below). Place all ingredients except bananas in a bowl and mix until just combined (either with spoon, spatula or electric mixer). Add bananas and stir gently just to get them spread evenly throughout the batter. Spoon batter into your favourite greased and lined cake or muffin pan and bake until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Notes: You can easily make the buttermilk by pouring 55ml of milk into a small bowl and adding 1 Tbsp (20ml) of white vinegar (or lemon, lime or pineapple juice). Allow to sit for a couple of minutes and it’s ready to use. If you want to add some chopped nuts (half a cup or so), do this when the bananas go in. Walnuts are great, pecans work too. COMMUNITY SPIRIT IN ACTION THE GREAT TRACTOR ESCAPADE The floodwaters may have receded but heroic stories from last month’s catastrophic weather event endures. When Laceys Creek residents Angela Koek and Bryce McMillan found themselves isolated on their property for 12 days, the community rallied to ensure no one would go without. At day 9 of being trapped inside their boundary line, other residents mobilised to ensure the essentials of food petrol and wine would arrive at Angela and Bryce’s doorstep and for Angela’s similarly cut-off parents. The curtain rose on act one of The Great Tractor Escapade with Matt Evans procuring
generator fuel and needing to confer it to someone who could get it to Angela and Bryce. Someone with a tractor. The role of tractor driver one is played by Logan Colson who received petrol choreography assistance from Mel and Kate Theed. The second act opens with Shazza Bell procuring groceries for three families caught on the wrong side of the water. Directed by Josie Bevan, the groceries were transported to Dean Wort in Laceys Creek.
In opening the finale, Angela and Bryce boarded their own tractor, driving through eight hairy creek crossings to reach Logan Colson and Trish Bicevskis’s house. The two tractors combined forces to reach a 4WD parked on the other side of Rucker Rd Crossing. Logan and Bryce could then
make a stage left exit to Westons Crossing where Dean handed them provisions to last the cut-off families a few more days. “Having the community rally together to help us get essential groceries (and of course wine) made me feel like we were not forgotten and so alone. There are so many good people in this community,” Angela said. The Village Pump would like to applaud the cast of many who came together under extraordinary circumstances to lend a hand where they could. This story unfolded without a wrong step, thanks to each person playing their part to help others in the community. Tanya Hall

SAMFORD STATE SCHOOL UPDATE A New Era For An Established Institution It’s been the scene of lunchbox treats and crepe paper craft for 150 years, and now there’s a new Principal and leadership team steering Samford State School into the future. Nicole Collins took over as Acting Principal part way through last year, and impressed so much with her efforts, she has since been confirmed in the role. We spent some time with her so you can get to know the person behind the latest familiar face at the school gates each morning. What is your background before becoming the Samford State School Principal? I was born and raised on the Sunshine Coast and have such fond memories of my own schooling. I’m a mother of 3 gorgeous boys: twins Alex and Matthew (11 years old) and William in high school. I’ve worked in country towns and in big cities. My previous position was Principal of Acacia Ridge State School where I worked in partnership with the community to improve student learning for 4.5 years.
Leadership Team L-R: John Mauch (Deputy Principal), Amanda Taylor (Head of Student Services), Nicole Collins (Principal), Trish Bennell-Kling (Deputy Principal), Nunzi Hyde (Business Manager).
What attracted you to taking on this leadership position within the Samford community? I had heard how beautiful Samford was and how connected the community was. This appealed to me; I’m all about relationships and connections. It’s how we
can ensure successful outcomes for all when we work together. What changes have you implemented during your time as Acting Principal? There were so many great aspects about Samford when I arrived. I think I’ve only strengthened the work that was embedded. I’ve forged my own relationships with staff, community and my favourite people – the children. The children are just so beautiful, it’s a privilege to work with them each day. What challenges lie ahead for schools in general this year? I think the world that we currently live in provides the biggest challenge. I’ll be listening to and be guided by those in positions who can support me to support my school. However, to date I’m so impressed with how the school works together and supports each other. How would you describe the future of Samford State School? Bright. You need to just walk around with me. I encourage anyone to book an interview and tour; you’ll fall in love with it as much as I have. Tanya Hall

As the COVID restriction began to lift, churches were given the option of making services open (no proof of vaccination required) or restricted (proof of vaccination required). At St Pauls we made both options available to meet the needs of as many as possible. That decision has been reviewed. Effective immediately all our service will be open to all. Since Christmas, the two congregations (7:30am and 9am) have been worshipping together at a combined 8am service. The experience has been enjoyed by so many the decision was made to keep the 8am service going at least until Easter Day. The 10am service which was established for those requiring a “no proof of vaccination required” option has been ceased. ‘MUSIC FOR THE SOUL’ Following the success of her spring tour of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, acclaimed British singer-songwriter Emily Maguire is performing at Mount Nebo Hall on Saturday 30 April. A classically trained multi-instrumentalist, composer and poet with six albums and four books to her name, Emily is a contemporary folk artist who has toured the UK extensively with American legends Don McLean, Dr Hook and Eric Bibb. Described as ‘music for the soul’ (Maverick Magazine), her songs have been used by Greenpeace and Hollywood, playlisted on both national ABC and BBC Radio, and performed in prisons and psychiatric hospitals as well as concert halls and theatres across the UK and Ireland. With a remarkable, inspiring story to tell, Emily has been interviewed many times about her struggles with bipolar disorder
since publishing her first book ‘Start Over Again’. Her experience of mental health recovery and her practice of Buddhist meditation over the past 20 years have strongly influenced her songwriting. With songs ‘bathed in raw, emotional power’ (Guitarist Magazine), Emily’s live show is a moving and thought-provoking experience not to be missed. After 12 years away in the UK, Emily and husband Christian are delighted to be back on the family goat farm in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, where they finance their record label Shaktu Records by making goats cheese, while working on Emily’s seventh album, due for release later this year. Tickets for Emily’s Mount Nebo Hall show are $25/$20 concessions, available from TryBooking through Emily’s website at www.emilymaguire.com.

FROGS OF THE SAMFORD DISTRICT Our AGM in March resulted in a much wider sharing of the workload among members and we thank everyone who took on a role, especially our first timers. This has already brought fresh ideas into the running of the Branch. Our general meeting that followed featured Dominic Hyde who updated us on the great work carried out by the Mts Glorious and Nebo Protection Association (MEPA). The massive weed control program to help rehabilitate the
upper South Pine River catchment is funded by a range of organisations. Dominic’s depth of knowledge and passion was appreciated by all. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 5 April in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for sign in for a 7.30pm start and will feature frog enthusiast Josiah Rossic who will introduce us to the frogs we may encounter in the district. Josiah will also explain how to create a frog-friendly garden, including how to install a frog pond. To protect our members, Covid restrictions apply: attendees must be fully vaccinated
and we encourage people to wear masks. A final reminder that NPQ’s popular Autumn Plants Market will be held in the main pavilion (‘barn’) at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 2 April from 9am to 3pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to buy unusual, quality native plants at good prices and to receive expert advice about your garden. For further information and for a full plant list, visit our website: https:// npq.org.au/. Peter Storer
April brings forth another busy month for the library, with Native Plants Qld holding their annual sale at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 2nd April. The library has once again been invited to cater at the event. A sausage sizzle, beef and veggie patties with coleslaw, homemade Anzac biscuits and a limited number of biscuits made with native foods will be on offer. Refreshments include lemon myrtle punch - something a little special - soft drinks, tea and run of the mill coffee. The bottomless cup will be available once again to benefit stall holders in particular. Easter Saturday (16th April) the library will once again be at Bunnings Keperra with the ever-popular Children’s Books, Toys, Puzzles and Games. Adult puzzles will also be on sale. Lots of new stock has been donated! There may even be a pony or two present to pet.

NEW COMMUNITY GRANTS OPEN OUT & ABOUT COMMUNITY BANK SAMFORD LAUNCHES 2022 FUNDING ROUND Our local Samford Community Bank has announced the launch of its annual community grants for 2022. The funding round opens on 18 April and will take the total contribution to local community organisations close to $1 million in recent years. Community Bank Samford and Pine Rivers is locally owned under a franchise agreement with Bendigo Bank. Community Banks distribute a large percentage of profits back into the community through grants, sponsorships and one-off donations. “Our Bank continues to grow and expand both standard and specialised banking services, and so we create more opportunities for shareholders and the community at large,” said Mandy Bell, Samford Senior Branch Manager. “With this round, we expect to pass a total grant allocation of a million dollars. It’s a great reflection of how our customers’ banking loyalty can support their own community.” In a significant boost for community organisations, Community Bank Board
member and Chair of the Bank’s Community Engagement Committee, Terry Hogan, said that the Board had joined in discussions with Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association (SDPPA) about a strategy to coordinate local community grants. “Governments at all levels offer many grant schemes but these tend to be for larger projects. The SDPPA, just like the Community Bank, has for many years provided small to medium grants to worthy local causes, so it makes sense for us to get our heads together to see how we can make the grant dollar go further and wider.” Mandy pointed out that the application process for Community Bank grants has been streamlined. Applicants can head to www.prcf.com.au, click through the Community Funding tab and follow the directions to the Community Enterprise Foundation website (Bendigo Bank’s central grants processing centre) for grants between $1000 and $10000. This grant round will close on Sunday 15 May 2022 and successful grants announced in June 2022. Watch out for further news from the Community Bank and the SDPPA. ECO-CORRIDOR UPDATE EcoCorridor and the flood Over the past 8 years, the Eco-Corridor has been affected by drought, flood and frost, but nothing quite like the late February ‘rain bomb’. The flood peak in the South Pine River was much higher than after ex-cyclone Debbie, reaching the top of the picnic table along the Eco-Trail. All our mulch in rainforest revegetation zones P1 and P2 had floated away to be deposited in the netball carpark and towards the Samford Bowls Club. Superficially, these revegetation areas look good, with no trees down, but the understorey has been flattened and buried in a few centimetres of silt, or has scoured, exposing tree roots, depending on the water flow. Many of our Richmond Birdwing Vines here have been pulled off their supports, and a few washed away, and the remaining ones were tricky to find because our blue stake markers have largely disappeared. Most of those on the river bank have been lost and, inevitably, our newest river bank planting had been flattened by the force of the current and buried in even deeper silt. Smaller trees in the National Tree Day planting and other river bank plantings have been toppled or bent right over and, instead of a shady walk, the Eco-Trail now has ‘river glimpses’. Thankfully our hillside planting P3 was largely unscathed. One positive outcome is that the bad Madeira Vine infestations at the rear of the
Volunteers removing Madeira Vine along the edge of the remnant
weedy area to the west of P2 are now more accessible and dealing with these will be a priority. The second is that it turns out to be a very good decision to postpone our site expansion for a year. On 3 March, our local contractors Bushtekniq carried out some ‘emergency first aid’, re-planting understorey plants that had exposed roots, staking shrubs or small trees that had been bent over by the rush of water in the revegetation zones and lopping broken branches. They also re-attached many of our younger Richmond Birdwing Vines that had come off their supports. Our call to arms for our monthly MBRCled bushcare working bee on Sunday 13 March was answered and we got a fabulous

turn out of 14 volunteers, including our regulars plus some familiar faces who had returned, as well as some first timers. One large team started weeding at the top of revegetation zone P3 and worked their way down the hillside. Reluctantly, we had to remove most of the local native vine (Bell Vine, Ipomoea plebeia), which had come up as a ‘volunteer’ and was smothering many of our trees and shrubs. Meanwhile our more experienced weeders began removing a bad infestation of Madeira Vine along the edge of the remnant in the area opened up by the floods. This involved physical removal of the succulent vine, especially making sure that none of the ‘tubers’ were left on the ground to re-sprout. By the end of the session, every inch of the Council vehicle was filled with bags of noxious weeds. A job well done! It was wonderful to see so many volunteers on site and we hope to keep this momentum going into the cooler months so we can continue restoring the site to its former glory. Our next bushcare working bee will be on Sunday 10 April from 2pm to 4pm. We hope for another great roll up. Climate Action In Action In our Green Street series of information about the world’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we look at the thir teenth Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations to “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy.” The goal is designed to improve resilience and adaptive capacity to natural disasters and climate-related hazards in all countries. As if we need reminding of that after the mammoth rainfalls of past weeks and the uncontrollable bushfires of recent times! Not to mention the contested controversy over carbon credits. Add to this the current report on coral bleaching and huge temperature rises
Shayne Day OSTEOPATH B.App.Sci (Osteopathy)
of 30 degrees Celsius and more in the Arctic and Antarctic regions and it’s clear that climate action is needed. Not climate in-action. According to the UN, that includes significant improvement of education and awareness on climate change, impact reduction and early warning. This also encourages the set up of mechanisms to raise capacity to manage and plan for events relating to climate changes. The recent conference on sustainability conducted by the Moreton Bay Regional Council and attended by a number of Samford residents, addressed the need to tackle climate change. Pioneering groups like the Pine Rivers Climate Action Network were instrumental in accelerating the Samford Solar Neighbourhood and the ‘Change our Bag Habits’ program a decade or so ago and the local work continues with various groups contributing. For the ‘how to’ of action to build a sustainable community and planet, go to www.greenstreet.net.au. If you would like to initiate a project to achieve any of the SDGs, please email info@greenstreet.net. au or call 0407 190 162, or write about it in the next Village Pump. Howard Nielsen

Thankfully the easing of some of the COVID restrictions has meant that we can increase the support we provide to the community, be it transport, social events, food supply, shopping or mental/emotional care. For an overview of our services, head to our website: www.samfordsupportnetwork. com and follow the links. We are acutely aware that there may still be a need for support after the recent heavy rains and floods. The SSN can provide support for short term assistance, or long term, to people living in our catchment area, so please don’t hesitate to contact us 0470 214 916 or ssn@samfordsupportnetwork. com.au. Recently our Treasurer Steve Parry met with the ladies from the CWA Samford to receive a donation of $2000. Steve thanked the CWA Samford for their generosity and said, “This donation will help towards our general expenses in running the SSN and providing valued services to our registered
community members.” How amazing and generous - community supporting community! We are always so heart warmed to receive donations from many different places in this community.
Did you know that we have a Containers for Change program? This is a program that encourages recycling of containers. Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a 10 cent refund, or for consumers to donate to a charity or community group. Thank you to everyone that donates their refund to the SSN, it is noticed and much appreciated. If you would like to find out more on how to do this, please go to www. containersforchange.com.au. Our scheme ID is: C10124762. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our many members who volunteer time to support the services we offer. The SSN would not be what it is without the many hearts, hands and legs that do a lot of work. We have improved the ability for community members to register for help and for new volunteers to apply for membership. The online forms can be found under the “Join the SSN” tab on our website. LOCAL NEWS SAMFORD HEALTH AND WELLBEING SUPPORT NEED A LITTLE HELP FROM A FRIEND? More and more, in this difficult time, we need to have strong communities to help us get through life’s challenges: friends, work mates, interest groups or those we have contact with every day in our locality. Don’t Ever Think All Is Lost (DETAIL) is a self-supporting community group for people who have experienced anxiety and depression and their carers. Everyone is welcome. At present Kim, the initiator of the group, is seeking new experiences and strategies to help those who come. It could be anything from nutrition to Tai Chi, music therapy to meditation, sensory walking to self-care, or any other experience you think might help. If you feel you could contribute to this group and you can gift some time to the face-to-face sessions which are held on the second Friday afternoon of the month at the SCHUB, please email Kim at donteverthinkallislost@gmail.com. By working together and sharing our experiences, we can create a kinder world.
As a back-up to DETAIL, each Friday afternoon at the SCHUB, join us for a cuppa and a chat at 2pm. On the first Friday, a writers’ support group, SAMFORD SCRIBBLERS, runs between 3pm and 5pm. DETAIL runs on the second Friday starting at 3.30pm. In April, Louise is sharing Lomilomi and self-care massage. On the third Friday CRAFTING KINDNESS runs between 2pm and 5pm. This is based on the idea of random acts of kindness to lift people’s spirits. Lovely Lucie will oversee this. Watch here and Facebook for more information. On the fourth Friday, Jenni runs the GOOD STUFF IDEAS FORUM, a discussion group that explores concepts like Courage, through references to literature, the arts and personal experience. Everyone is welcome every Friday afternoon at the SCHUB, 2204 Mt Samson Road from 2pm till 5pm.
UNAPOLOGETIC Two Samford locals have bared and shared their souls to liberate other women. Odelle Wolfenden, who first moved to Samford in 2004, invited her friend Katherine Lynda, who spent her entire childhood living in Wights Mountain, to participate in a book about shedding inauthenticity and they haven’t looked back. So much so, that they are now international bestselling authors! Unapologetic: Shedding Inauthenticity to Become Uniquely You is a collaboration of 16 women, including Odelle and Katherine, approached by the publisher to share their stories in the hope it would empower others to overcome adversity or inspire others to show up unapologetically in the world.

Being confronted in their own lives with addiction, infidelity, sexual curiosity, and early birth, also known as miscarriage, propelled them into self-discovery. The power of storytelling, of sharing honest raw truths and being real, starts to close the gap of loneliness and disconnection too many women feel. Women’s liberation is important to Katherine and Odelle who offer various forms of feminine coaching, intimate group education in person and online, ecstatic dance, yoga and ceremonial circles. The purpose; to fulfill a deep yearning so many local women have, for profound self-connection, unlocking their pleasure potential and becoming unapologetic. Odelle says, ‘We know intuition sometimes speaks quietly, or gives gentle nudges, but with an open heart and mind, you begin to hear what you need to.” Katherine adds, “We are here for women that know they want more, have an inkling there is more, or aren’t sure yet, but where they are at now, is not where they will stay!” Head to: www.katherinelynda.com. au/product/unapologeticbook or www. odellewolfenden.com to purchase the book.

Professional tooth cleaning is necessary to deliver a beautiful smile and to maintain healthy teeth. It removes harmful plaque (called biofilm) on teeth and gums. Dental biofilm is insidious. You can't see it. You can't smell it. You can't feel it. But it is the main cause of tooth decay (caries), gum disease (periodontitis) and even tooth loss. Guided Biofilm Therapy from EMS identifies biofilm and thoroughly removes it. Studies show that biofilm increases the risk of Alzheimer's, heart disease, respiratory disorders, diabetes and more. OUT & ABOUT DINKIDI AUSTRALIA OPEN DAY Labour Day long weekend usually sees Dinkidi Australia at the Maleny Wood Expo. Sadly this event has been cancelled for the third year in a row. Instead, you can visit their open studio in Wights Mountain on 1st and 2nd May. Dinkidi Australia wood and art is the collaboration of husband and wife, Gaetano Moschella and Diane Kime. Their love and appreciation of timber has led them to source and sell mainly Queensland timber for their own use and for woodworkers and turners. Gaetano (Guy) regularly travels throughout Queensland where he is invited to private properties to source his timber mainly old growth or fallen timber – taking him to western parts of the State and up into the gulf country. Back home, the timber is cleaned, cut and stored to dry under cover. Once dry, it is ready for all woodwork and turning projects, from raw edge slabs, wooden rounds, blanks of all sizes, knife scales and musical instruments. Guy also enjoys the relaxing hobby of creating wood and resin, seeing his ideas turn into truly unique works of art. Over

the years he has achieved a high degree of skill in the use of these materials which is evident as you enter the property, sighting the iron gates and fence panels which Guy designed and welded. The ironwork tells the personal story of Guy and Diane.
Diane is an artist who mainly paints with heatset oils, cutting her own boards and glueing her own canvases before they are professionally framed. The finished pieces of art are on display in the studio along with a large range of craft created by Diane, including hand towels, cards, jewellery, crochet work plus more. The studio will also display some medieval inspired metal and woodwork by Martin the Black, including bells, camping tools, iron dragonflies and some very unique modern wall clocks by local artist Tony Healey. Over the years Guy and Diane have hosted fundraisers to raise money for those in need locally, proudly supporting Hummingbird House Children’s Hospice at Chermside with a raffle last year. Currently there is a selection of cloth bags made by a recovered cancer patient. 100% of money from the sale of these bags will go to Hummingbird House. www.dinkidi-australia.com, Springfield Court, Wights Mountain. DAYBORO ART GALLERY Have you heard about Mike White? Mike White is a self-taught visual artist balancing his full time employment in construction with a more right brain focus, painting in his spare time. Growing up in a creative family, Mike always had an interest in art. But it was only when he was made redundant in 2014 that he pursued art with a fresh passion – painting his first portraits and street scenes inspired by time volunteering in Africa.
Mike and his wife Melissa recently relocated from the Sunshine Coast to the Samford Valley to be part of a creative community. Mike uses colour and contrast to express the vibrancy and diversity of life across many cultures. His art is influenced by his love of Fauvism – the works of the masters Andre Derain, Matisse and Vlaminck. The artwork featured here was created by Mike (Micko’s Art) while onsite at the Ocean View Estates Winery, as part of the Tawny Trails event. You can view Mike’s work or any of the other 30 exhibiting artists at Dayboro Art Gallery from 10am - 3pm 7 days a week, or visit the Facebook page for updates on new artworks, artist profiles and events. SAMFORD MUSEUM UPDATE Samford Museum WE HAVE REOPENED Welcoming visitors Sunday and Wednesday 10am - 4pm – AND you get to come through the new entrance off John Scott Park.
Help Needed Samford Museum’s replica slab and shingle school was constructed in Y2000 and opened Australia Day 2001. Until now we have been fortunate that it has withstood all weather conditions. The shingles on the end of the ridge cap have moved slightly which allowed a small amount of water into the school. Our members are able to repair the problem however a cherry picker or similarly safe machine for working at height is required. Is there anyone in the community who could help with a suitable machine? Assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Geoff 0417 610 983 if you can assist or for more information. Samford’s original slab-walled and shingle-roofed Provisional School 1872-1878
was constructed by locals George McLean and Daniel McCombe - Daniel having shingled the roof. How grateful we are to our early families for recording their memories to again be shared in Samford School’s 150th birthday year. A feature of the 1884 official opening of the Samsonvale Presbyterian Church not included in the program was the violent storm that swept over the district. The shingles on the unlined slab walled and shingleroofed building had shrunk, consequently rain leaked freely through onto the worshipers. A lighter moment for some or discomfort for others. (Samsonvale by AJ GOLD) The site is now marked with a plaque near Samsonvale Cemetery. Maintenance is constant - Derek is pictured sweeping up after the big wet. Handy men and women who have a day
to spare are welcome to become members. Either drop in on Wednesday or Sunday after 10am or call Geoff for more information. Admission: $5 adults and $1 for children. School and community groups by special arrangement.

OUT & ABOUT A Trio of Awards for Samford Scouts Three Samford scouts have recently each been awarded a prestigious Australian Scout Medallion by the Chief Commissioner of Scouts Queensland and Samford resident Mr Daryl Scott. Benjamin Reed, Clancy Reed and Sarah Warren Angus from the Samford Scout Group, all 15 years old, received their awards at a special presentation featuring scouts, family and friends. The Australian Scout Medallion demonstrates a Scout’s commitment to developing their independence and leadership skills, and is the pinnacle award for the scout section. The Samford Scout Section Leader, Will Noy said, “The Australian Scout Medallion is a highly commendable achievement for scouts, and represents hundreds of hours of service, hard work and dedication. Scouts receiving the award have shown great personal development and requires leadership, organisation, drive, determination, resilience and high-level practical Scouting knowledge.”
As these scouts move on to new challenges, Samford Scout Group welcomes enquiries from people aged 5 – 26 years to join us for adventures in scouting. www. samfordscouts.com.au.
Samford Area Mens Shed Although the Covid restrictions have been eased, the men at Samford Area Men’s Shed (aka: SAMS) have not been complacent. They have been encouraged to continue to practice the Covid Safe protocols, especially in the light of the fact that there is another variant of Covid called BA.2 lurking with intent.

Since SAMS has been able to get back to “normal”, there has been an outpouring of creative activity from the men. Everything from photography, art and woodworking to metalwork and even golf has kept the men busy, enthused and amused! There is also so much to do around the Shed as well. Although the Shed was not seriously impacted by the recent heavy rain and floods, the gardens and grass around the Shed experienced a growth spurt that made the area look like a jungle rather than wellkept gardens and lawns. Then there are the future plans and programs in the mix to think about. The men are getting ready to celebrate SAMS 10th anniversary on Sunday 15th May with an open day to not only demonstrate the men’s creativity and activities, but also to share with people just what SAMS is all about. On a more sombre note: the men at SAMS are also preparing to lay a wreath as they participate in the ANZAC remembrance service that will be held at the Avenue of Honour on 25th April. So, as you can see, the men at SAMS are definitely not laying around idle and twiddling their thumbs! Men of Samford and surrounds, why not to come along and see what SAMS is all about. Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. OUT & ABOUT SEG KEEPS ON GROWING Our first official competitive dressage event was held on Sunday 20th March and was another huge success. Over 60 riders of all ages and abilities attended, entering classes from ‘Prep’ beginners to ‘Grand Prix’ high level. We were very honoured to have former Olympian Ricky MacMillan judging at this event. icky competed in dressage at the Athens 2004 and Sydney 2000 Games. She also competed at SEG for the first time a couple of years ago and was a joy to meet. The day went very well with no incidents and lots of happy riders and horses. A special thanks to Garry and his team from Rake-it-Up for pulling out all stocks to quickly restore our sand arenas back up to professional standard after significant flood damage. This event wouldn’t have gone ahead without his favour. In addition, our grounds assistant Lachy has worked tirelessly this year keeping the jungle under control to ensure our grass arena has remained ridable. Coming up at SEG, we have our huge
annual 3-day ‘Working Equitation’ (WE) competition on 30th April – 2nd May. This year we’re including a special ‘Newbies Intro’ class for members who’ve never competed in WE before. This fun class is designed to be walk /trot only, so less pressure for horses and riders. WE is known worldwide as the “fun way to train seriously!” Along with our disciplines of dressage and jumping at SEG, check out why WE is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports around. Jump on to our WE Co-ordinator Kate opens the rope gate obstacle with style! website and follow the links to enquire or enter via Nominate. Our last WE ‘Come & Try’ event was booked out in just 3 design has kept this to a minimum. The days, so hurry, places fill fast! http://www. Please contact my office on 3480 6455 or email me Darren. DIVISION 11 COUNCIL grimwade@moretonbay.qld.gov.au and your details can be passed on. REPORT We are in the final stages of the Main Street streetscape revitalisation for Samford Village. There has been a great body of work done so far behind the scenes with planning and of course we had community involvement via the online survey that saw around 600 people provide feedback on their ideas. It is looking like construction should begin from mid to later this year with the final design incorporating many of the suggestions from the community, such as additional planting, seating and bike racks. Council was asked to provide better pathways and also places to gather along the street which supports the current atmosphere in the village. In order for these ideas to be realised and to achieve safe, accessible footpaths with clear lines of sight, 3 trees will need to be removed. They are currently located - on the verge outside 10 Village Lane, at 37 Main Street, outside cafes at Cash Avenue and the last one is on the verge at 15 Main Street (on the northern side of Kath Fitzgerald Drive/ Main Street intersection). There will be 29 trees of varying species planted as part of the upgrade works, which will supplement the remaining street trees. I appreciate the sensitivity around the removal of any trees which is why the

OUT & ABOUT PINE RIVERS UPDATE Dayboro Police Station Upgrade Consultation During the 2020 election, The Honorable Mark Ryan Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services and myself, announced plans for a modern, fit for purpose police station in Dayboro. I am pleased to announce that on Tuesday April 5 2022, the Honorable Mark Ryan, representatives of the Queensland Police service and myself will be hosting a community consultation event in Dayboro. The meeting will take place at the Dayboro Community Hall, Bradley St, Dayboro, at 10am running till 12pm. This consultation will be a great opportunity for community members to come together and voice their expectations to QPS around what they want the new police station to look like, as well as possible services. This announcement is part of the Palaszczuk Governments strong commitment to keeping our communities safe, as well as equipping our police services with more resources.
Samford Avenue of Honour War Animal Memorial On Friday the 11th March 2022, I had the privilege of joining the Samford Avenue of Honour Association in opening the new War Animal Memorial. The memorial recognises the bond that exists between us and animals. A purple poppy was laid to remember the important role they played in many conflicts. The Samford Avenue of Honour Association received $32,000 through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to assist with the installation of the War Animal Memorial, along with many other valuable sources of funding. Conservation Projects: The Palaszczuk Government has announced our conservation project that encourages community organisations with a passion for the environment to pitch their best projects to help Queensland’s national parks and forest flourish. $700,000 is now on offer for community-led conservation projects in state-owned greenspaces. Our Park Rangers and volunteers are right now coordinating a huge flood clean-up at more than 40 national parks across the State. Following this initial clean-up, there’s a bigger task ahead to rehabilitate many of those areas, to create thriving spaces for native wildlife and for our community and visitors to explore. All applications can be made until April 19 and must be submitted using the department’s online grants administration program. You can find out more here: https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/ pollution/funding/community-sustainability
served in several board positions, including President and Secretary and is always involved with every activity. I wonder how many sausages he has cooked in 35 years, or how many cars he has helped park, or cakes he has sold or people he has reached out to – for all of these our community thanks you. Human beings are hard-wired to give to others. The more we give, the happier we feel. The benefits of volunteering can be enormous, offering vital help to people in need in the community, but the benefits can be even more significant for you as a volunteer. Giving to others can also help protect your own mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression and keep you mentally stimulated. With the recent relocation of some of our Lion’s members out of the area (to Hervey Bay and South Australia), we are looking for new members. Samford Lions meets twice a month. The business meeting is on the first Thursday of the month at the Samford Community Hub, and the dinner meeting is on the 3rd Thursday of every month at Cafe Lagarto. Samford Lions Club On any day, your time is a precious commodity, and it’s essential to find the right words to thank volunteers and how profoundly appreciated they are. Volunteering takes time and energy, and to state the obvious, it’s not like they’re getting paid. This week has been a proud moment in the Samford Lions Club as we honour a valued Lions Club member who has reached 35 years of service. We congratulate Bob Wright who received a Chevron Award for his service and commitment to this club and his years of dedication to help make a difference in our local community. OUT & ABOUT Arana VIEW Club On 6th April, Arana VIEW Club will celebrate their Silver Jubilee. Forming 25 years ago, a special birthday celebration is planned at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade Keperra, 10.30am for 11.00am start. Come and enjoy a 2-course lunch, tea and coffee for $30.00pp. We will have our usual lucky door and raffle prizes, the proceeds supporting our Smith Family Learning for Life students. James Lergessner and the Boom Baby Band will entertain us, promising to have us all up dancing or at least clapping and singing along. Wear some silver if you can. The Smith Family is also celebrating this year. 100 years ago, in 1922, five Sydney businessmen gave gifts to a boy’s home on Christmas Eve. As they wished to remain anonymous, they called themselves The Smith’s. This year almost 300 VIEW Clubs across Australia will celebrate this milestone in various ways. VIEW is the largest community sponsor of students in The Smith family Learning for Life program and has supported students for over 60 years. We should all be proud to be a part of VIEW! Phone Carol on 3355 5349 by midday, Monday 4th April if you are attending. New members are always welcome.
Volunteer induction for RDA Samford Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is looking for volunteers and will hold a Volunteer Induction this Sunday, April 3. The induction introduces prospective volunteers to the work of RDA which benefits children and adults with a wide range of disabilities. It is also an opportunity to meet the herd of RDA horses. Anyone over 14 years of age, with or without riding or horse handling experience, is welcome. The only requirement is that participants wear trousers and closed-in shoes. RDA volunteers work in all aspects of the centre’s operation including horse care, grounds maintenance and assisting participants during sessions.
The induction will be held at Samford RDA centre at Samford Showgrounds from 9.30am to 11.30am. Current volunteers who wish to undertake a refresher are also encouraged to attend. To RSVP, email Sharon at volunteer@samfordrda.com.au. Samford RDA would like to thank residents of Samford Gardens Retirement Village for donating $100 from their jewellery-making classes, as well as the many residents of Samford Valley who regularly donate their refundable containers in support of the RDA centre (ID: C10072037). A special thanks go to local business 88 Ducks for its involvement in RDA’s Fine Food Fundraiser. All proceeds from the sale of 88 Ducks’ Queensland-made gourmet chutneys, relishes and jams during the fundraiser will benefit the RDA program.
