San Jacinto’s Arturo “AJ” Ojeda is the IE Varsity large schools boys athlete of the year. Ojeda was a starting offensive lineman and All-CIF-SS honoree for helping the football team to its first league title in over a decade. He also was the area’s top heavyweight wrestler, finishing as CIF-SS Northern Division champ and seventh at the CIF State championship meet.

For the class of 2020, it was a surreal end to the senior year. For Arturo “A.J.” Ojeda Jr., things got very real right at the start.

Between the house fire that left him standing with nothing but his San Jacinto shorts and the pandemic-caused virtual graduation, Ojeda filled the space with a high standard of excellence.

As the anchor of San Jacinto’s offensive line in football, he helped a balanced and dangerous offense that helped the Tigers end Citrus Hill’s dominance of the Mountain Pass League. As a heavyweight in wrestling, he claimed a Northern Division championship and a seventh-place finish in the state tournament.

For his accomplishments in both sports, Ojeda has been chosen IE Varsity’s Large Schools Boys Athlete of the Year.

However, the most important athletic feat of Ojeda’s senior year may have been the weightlifting

he did when his only opponents were flames and time. He carried younger siblings and family members, as well as members of an upstairs family, when fire hit their duplex in September.

There was trauma. There was heroism. And there was Ojeda, at football practice the next day. Distracted, but still doing his work.

It was there that a special senior year began to truly take shape.

“After practice, I came in and there were 10 or 15 boxes of stuff,” Ojeda said. “And they said, ‘It’s all for you guys. I couldn’t keep it inside after that. It was the team saying, ‘We’ve got you.’ I couldn’t give up on that team after that.”

One of the first to help was Coach Aric Galliano, who literally gave the shirt off his back. Ojeda joked, “Coach is a big guy. I’m a big guy too, but he’s a lot taller.

I put on that shirt and was like, ‘Dang, I’m in a dress.’”

On the field, Ojeda took to his role as the leader of the offensive line. Moved from guard to the key

left tackle spot, he was the bodyguard for quarterback Kajiya Hollawayne and a convoy for the Tigers’ running backs.

“I love playing tackle,” Ojeda said. “It’s a lot more one-on-one matchups and those are so much fun. No help. No pushing off to someone else.”

It’s more of a wrestlers’ mentality, which Galliano appreciates.

“They’re used to that one-onone combat,” he said. “They have the good hands, the good feet. I love going out and getting those kids.”

Galliano said Ojeda brings the full package: “Physical. Athletic.

Nasty. Very smart. Knows the game. Very good motor.”

Ojeda was a key element in San Jacinto ending Citrus Hill’s 13-year Mountain Pass reign and reaching the semifinals of the Division 6 playoffs. He earned allDivision 6 first-team honors. Not bad, considering football is Ojeda’s second sport.

Born into a wrestling family, Ojeda was on the competitive mat

by age 3, after his mother, Marie, saw a sign advertising a youth program.

“I don’t really remember when I was 3,” he said. “But my mom has told me the stories. Showing up in jean shorts, with sweat bands on my biceps.”

Ojeda’s memories from the years that followed were of fun and camaraderie, going for pizza after practice and competition.

Marie remembers a light going on in A.J. as the competitive fire grew.

Ojeda brought natural gifts to the sport. He was “crazy strong” according to Marie, from the outset, but matched it with athleticism.

“I was really surprised,” said Fidel Salcido, who has worked with Ojeda as both head coach and assistant. “Being an upper weight wrestler, he could move like a lower-weight wrestler.”

The early start also paid off in developing an advanced knowledge of tactics and strategy.

“We call it chain-wrestling,”

Salcido said. “It’s not just sticking to one move, but connecting it with another and another.”

Ojeda won four regular-season tournaments this season. His victory in the Northern Division final earned him the title of CIF champion and was particularly meaningful because he avenged a loss to Centennial’s Issac Lopez in the Riverside County meet final.

With plenty of time to think about it, Ojeda occasionally mulls his two losses in the state meet.

Ultimately, though, he appreciates the victories in a year that began in fire and ended with championships.

So does Marie.

“You know, I’m always going to be the crazy wrestling mom,” she said. “People told me they could hear me on the television (at the state meet) from clear across the pavilion.

“There’s a lot of pride in what he has done and who he’s become.

I have to thank all the coaches, too. They’ve helped me raise a great kid.”

The Linfield Christian girls volleyball team needed a new middle blocker this season. Coach Eric Hawes asked who was willing to step up, and Caylan Medley quickly raised her hand.

This should come as no surprise. Medley rarely, if ever, has backed down from a challenge.

Medley was a gymnast when she was younger but eventually grew out of the sport. She started to play volleyball and soccer in middle school and also got her start in track and field. Medley balanced the three sports at Linfield Christian and excelled in each of them, which is why she has been selected the IE Varsity Small Schools Girls Athlete of the Year.

“The one thing that stands out most is the pure joy Caylan gets from working and competing,” Linfield Christian’s track and field coach Amber Young said. “She enjoys the process just as much as the result. She is a great example of what a multi-sport athlete can do.”

Young was Linfield Christian’s athletic director and girls soccer coach at the time Medley transitioned from middle school to high school.

“I have to give her a shout out,” Medley said of Young. “She told the athletes we could specialize in one sport but also said being a multi-sport athlete would look good on college applications. I really loved all three sports, so the encouragement from her and all of my coaches and teachers really helped me grow as an athlete.”

Medley was the volleyball team’s starting right-side hitter as a junior and helped the Lions advance to the CIF Southern Section final. She injured her ankle in the semifinals and was unable to play in the section title match. Medley raced onto the court, crutches under her arms, when Linfield Christian claimed the title.

Hawes said Medley quickly adapted to her new position this season, and he believes Medley’s multi-sport background, especially as a high jumper, was the reason why.

Linfield Christian’s Caylan Medley, a multi-sport standout and two-time CIF-SS champion, is the IE Varsity small schools girls athlete of the year. to run a lot of slides on offense, and that motion and footwork is almost identical to a high jumper’s approach,” Hawes said. “She picked that up faster than anyone I’ve ever coached. I was so excited when she stepped up because I knew she would be willing to work as hard as possible to become better.”

Medley registered 162 kills as a senior, nearly tripling her total from the previous season. Medley was efficient, as well, finishing the season with a .369 hitting percentage. And Medley was on the floor this season when the Lions celebrated another section championship.

“Knowing that I contributed to that victory was a tremendous felling,” Medley said.

Three days after the volleyball season ended, Medley suited up at goalkeeper for the soccer team’s opener. Medley split time at the position with Heidi Marshall throughout the season, and the duo combined for 12 shutouts and only allowed only 28 goals in 26 matches.

The Lions captured the Division 7 championship, the program’s first section title, and Medley also earned All-CIF Southern Section honors for her performance in goal.

“That was exciting to be part of

history,” Medley said. “Winning one CIF title would have been an a memorable experience, but to be on two championship teams in one season truly was a blessing.”

Medley was seeking a third section title, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought an early end to the track and field season. Medley cleared 5 feet, 2 inches at the two meets she competed in, one of those coming while the soccer team was still in action. She has cleared 5-4 during her career and had her sights set on 5-6, which would have made Medley one of the favorites at the Division 4 finals.

“Track is my favorite sport,

so that was very disappointing,” Medley lamented.

Medley is headed to Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina on a track scholarship. She definitely will continue her career as a high jumper, but Medley also has been talking with her future coaches about a competing in multiple events. She ran hurdles and also did the long jump, triple jump and shot put during her time at Linfield, and Medley has entered a handful of heptathlon competitions over the years.

“I’m looking forward to a new challenge and potentially breaking some records,” Medley said.

Paloma Valley soccer and tennis standout Nicole Dallin has been selected the IE Varsity large schools girls athlete of the year.

Carlos Alfaro couldn’t take his eyes off the 5-year-old kicking a ball as hard as she could against a wall. He was supposed to be paying attention to her older sister, who Alfaro was training. But the sound of the ball thudding against that wall kept stealing Alfaro’s attention.

“The ball would come back way faster than I kicked it. It fascinated me. I remember it was so much fun,” Nicole Dallin said.

“She’d come out to the training sessions and would kick this ball against a wall,” remembered Alfaro, the Paloma Valley girls soccer coach. “Just constantly kicking the ball over and over. She was so focused on what she wanted to do.

I remember telling her mom this girl was going to be really good.

Surprisingly, she was. She was super good.”

Not surprisingly, given her laser focus, physical presence and fanatical work ethic, Dallin became super good at this soccer thing. She’s not bad at the tennis thing either and Dallin’s versatile and oft-dominant skills made her the IE Varsity Large Schools Girls Athlete of the Year.

“This may sound bad and I don’t want it to, but I’m surprised by this,” said Dallin, who is bound for the University of Arizona’s soccer team. “I didn’t feel like I did much, compared to other years.”

Dallin did plenty in her final, coronavirus-abbreviated year at Paloma Valley. On the soccer field, Dallin wrapped up a stellar career with 39 goals — including 17 of Paloma Valley’s 37 in Ivy League play. She scored seven hat tricks,

including five-goal and four-goal outbursts against league rival Riverside Poly and three goals against Valley View. In the latter game, Dallin scored a goal that is in the mix for high school goal of the year honors. Alfaro picks up the description.

“She juked three players, went to her left and took a 35-yard shot that hit the crossbar, bounced back toward the goalie who was trying to stop it. It hit her in the back and went in. It was crazy good.”

That was one of Dallin’s 103 career goals, one that helped bring her Ivy League MVP honors. Two years ago, Dallin was The PressEnterprise’s Girls Soccer Player of the Year and the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Player of the Year, when her 55 goals and 16 assists helped the Wildcats capture the Division 4 title and reach the state regional title match.

“She’s so dominating. Just a very dominating player when it comes to soccer,” Alfaro said. “What it is is the physical strength she has and her soccer IQ. Her ability to get around people. She’s so quick, it’s deceiving. You don’t realize how quick she is.

“When I had tryouts her freshman year, they were telling me about Megan’s sister. I said I remember her, but it’s been so long.

She came out and the first time she got the ball, she went around three different girls, juked and scored.

When I saw that, I looked at my assistant and said, ‘She’s on varsity.’ Just like that.”

On the tennis court, Dallin was the Sunbelt League Co-MVP, reeling off a 26-1 record with threeyear doubles’ partner Brenda Olas. The sport her mother Denise pushed her into became a wonderful athletic outlet that keeps Dal-

lin’s never-ceasing brain going, trying to figure out angles, different shots and even the innate joy of spiking a ball at her opponent’s feet at the net.

“It’s crazy looking back because at the start, I was awful,” she said.

“It was not as easy as soccer and it wasn’t as serious for me, but it was more fun. Tennis is so much more technical than soccer. If you move your wrist one way, the ball goes out. It was frustrating to train myself to focus on how I was hitting the ball. It definitely did not come easy.”

This definitely contrasts to soccer, which Dallin makes look sickeningly easy. For that, however, her two older sisters get generous assists. Dallin grew up going to her sisters’ practices because “they were way more fun than mine.” But the competitiveness in the Dallin family came baked into her DNA. So much so that when Dallin started playing soccer, she would take the ball from her teammates, score, then run down the sidelines announcing “That’s one, Mom… That’s two, Mom… That’s three, Mom. …”

“When I’m playing a game, there will be these huge girls and I think growing up with competitive sisters, I can not let anyone push me around,” she said. “We’d wrestle and I got the mindset I don’t want anyone to beat me. It comes naturally, the physical side of it. I do not like getting pushed around.

“When I’m going into a 50/50 ball with someone, I’m not coming out of that on the ground. There’s no way. My sisters and my dad gave that to me. … We did not like losing.”

You could say that Dallin goes to the wall to avoid it.

Excelsior Charter’s Jesse Vasquez is one of just four California wrestlers to win four state wrestling champonships. Vasquez, a 4.0 student, will wrestle at Aizona State.

By John Murphy CORONA >> Jesse Vasquez had just risen when two visitors arrived at his family’s home in a gated community in the Corona hills.

It was 10:30 a.m. on a recent weekday. This was an hour-long photo shoot. Later he’d lift. Then train. Then run some errands before traveling to Lake Havasu the next day. He could be excused for being weary. Not engaged.

Except he wasn’t. To Vasquez, 19, it was another opportunity to explore. Soak up knowledge. Improve himself before he sets off for Arizona State University in August and all the wonders that await.

“What have you been reading?”

Vasquez asks a visitor more than four decades his senior. “I’ve been reading Dean Koontz. And Tim Grover (a motivational speaker) and “The Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell — it talks about why people are successful.”

Vasquez, muscular and handsome, is obsessed with success.

The quest for knowledge has suited the former Excelsior Charter wrestler well so far. He was a four-time CIF-State wrestling champion and California’s Dave Schultz Excellence award winner. He has the full ride to ASU. And this IE Varsity Small Schools Athlete of the Year honor is just the latest in a seemingly endless stream of plaudits.

His goals? Vasquez wants to win NCAA titles, world championships and wrestle in the Olympics.

He also wants to make a billion dollars! He’s stated all of these things at various times during a glory-soaked senior year.

“Do you like Stephen A. (Smith)?” Vasquez asks, referring to the ESPN sports analyst. “I respect his grind. I’ve watched some documentaries on him, and his work ethic is unmatched. People may not like him, but they’ve got to respect him. And I like his delivery

— that shows that he cares about his job, cares about what he does.”

Vasquez has now shed any pretense of sleepiness and is on his game. He’s changed from his morning attire to a pale blue and white Excelsior Charter wrestling singlet. And he’s posing for the photographer, acting like he’s about to battle some Central Valley brute.

Click. Click. Click. The camera fires away, capturing Jesse Vasquez — one of only four wrestlers in California state history to win four state titles and the only Southern Californian to accomplish the feat. But he’s more than just a wrestler, and Vasquez wants everyone to know it.

“I been really on Tupac (Shakur) right now,” Vasquez announces. “I been doing a bunch of research on Tupac. I never was really into that kind of rap or anything.”

Click. Click. Click. The photo session continues, as Vasquez pivots around in his bare stock-

ing feet.

“You got all the equipment, dog,” Vasquez says to the photographer. “That’s some crazy stuff.”

Vasquez is a straight-A student.

Whip-smart and with an active mind, he constantly generates topics of discussion. Offers opinions. He also cares about children and society.

“Has he always been like this — been so inquisitive?” his mother Addie is asked.

“He’s always had so much curiosity,” she said. “He wants to learn. He thinks that’s how people get smart — by knowing what other people do.”

Addie, a native of Mexico, told a story about her son going for an eye test and quizzing the optometrist about how he can improve his reading.

“The doctor said, ‘You have a really smart boy. I’ve never had a teenager ask me those questions.’”

The photo session continues, and the energetic teen decides it’s

not lively enough for him.

“Let’s get it bumpin’ in here,” he says, and he skips up a flight of stairs to grab his Smart phone and some speakers. Soon he’s bopping to a promising hip-hop artist, Xavier Hndrx, who he met while attending Corona Santiago High. Both boys transferred to the Corona campus of Excelsior Charter. (Xavier’s real last name is Luitui).

Asked later, by email, what he was listening to, Vasquez said, “My brother from another mother, Xavier Hndrx. I played every song that’s released on his SoundCloud.

My brother and I are makin’ it to the top. (Fixing to) take over. This ain’t comin’ from a cocky perspective. This is coming from confidence in our talents. We know what God possessed us with and we makin’ the best out of what we got. Wrestling is only one dimension of my life.”

It’s hard to doubt Jesse Vasquez.

He hasn’t been wrong yet.
