Obituaries Genevieve E. ‘Gennie’ Peterson
Genevieve E. “Gennie” Peterson, 96, of Carrollton, passed away Monday morning, Dec. 3, 2018, at Centerville Village in Carrollton. A daughter of the late William J. and Emma Mary McCully Rutledge, she was born March 26, 1922, in Union Township, Carroll County. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William E. “Bill” Peterson in 2010; and her first husband, Lester Brooks, in 1944. Gennie was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women at the church. For nearly half a century, she served as a county, school and/or private practice nurse to Charles Dowell and Carl Lincke. Her tireless dedication to serving and supporting others throughout her entire life was simply how she lived. A woman who truly lived her quiet faith in everything she did, Gennie extended her “family” to include anyone and everyone. She leaves behind her sons, William B. (Barbara) Peterson of Carrollton and Lanny (Kendra) of East Township; daughters, Judy (Lynn) Capper of Carrollton, Susie (Blink) McCorkle of Vincennes, IN, Peggy (Craig) Deibel of North Canton, and Becky (Micah) Hartong of near Mechanicstown; grandchildren, Travis (Debbie) Capper, Roman (Melissa) Capper, Rachel (Capper) Jon Rinkes, Targan Peterson, Jasmine (Peterson) Rashidi Hodari, Natalie Deibel (John Christian), Anna (Deibel) Justen Stickley, Erica (Deibel) Brian Cohen, Ashley (McCorkle) Bruce Fleetwood, Kiley (McCorkle) Sean Docherty, Kaitlin (Peterson) Travis Haugh, Jacob Peterson, and Caleb and Lane Hartong. She was also “Grandma Pete” to twenty-two beloved great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton from 4-6 p.m. Funeral will be at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church near Petersburg at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 with viewing one hour prior. Helen Haynam Tritten
Helen Haynam Tritten, 91, of Salem, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, in the Crandall Medical Center in Sebring. She was born Feb. 24, 1927, in Kensington to Harry and Nora (Kibler) Roach. She graduated from Augusta High School in 1944. She was a homemaker and will be remembered for her devotion to God and family. Her quick wit and warm smile brought joy to all. She enjoyed singing, reading, puzzles and crosswords. She was a proud grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Damascus Friends Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dale Ray Haynam, who died April 16, 1986; a son, Dane Leon; a daughter, Dayle Gruszecki; 2 brothers, Paul and Wayne Roach; 3 sisters, Maxine Stewart, Madeline Duvall, Irene Whinnery; a grandson, Michael Johnson; and a granddaughter, Dana Lee Ulman. She is survived by 6 daughters, Diana (Gary) Ulman of Carrollton; Direne (John) Stanley of Beloit; Dedre (Max) Snode of Amsterdam; Darla (Otis) Hupp of Glenford; Danita (John) Fick of Minerva; Ruth Haynam of Pittsburgh; a son, Daryl (Linda) Haynam of Newark; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and son-in-law Richard Gruszecki. Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 1 at 12 p.m. in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home with Pastor Harley Snode officiating. Burial will be at the Grove Hill Cemetery. Thelma A. Whitehair
Thelma A. Whitehair, 94, a lifetime resident of Sherrodsville, Ohio, died early Thursday morning, Nov. 29, 2018 in the Carroll Healthcare Center at Carrollton. She was born June 4, 1924 in her current residence in Sherrodsville, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Ora E. Smith Moughiman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Whitehair, who died Dec. 25, 1969; a son, Jim Whitehair; a daughter, Diane Roudebush; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hill, Laura Moughiman, Margaret Bull and Josephine Lewis; three brothers, James C. Moughiman, Emmet Moughiman and William Moughiman; a granddaughter, Tanya Willett; and her son-in-law, Joe Walters. Thelma was an employee of the former Coultrap’s Store at Tappan Lake for 14 years and was the local Ohio Deputy Registrar for many years. She was an active and faithful member of the Calvary United Methodist Church at Sherrodsville since she was 12 years of age - a remarkable total of 82 years. She was a member of the Carroll County Temple of Pythian Sisters for 68 years and sang with the barbershop chorus of “Sweet Adelines” for 20 years. In her leisure, she enjoyed sewing and crocheting and watching her favorite baseball team, the Cleveland Indians. She was a 1942 graduate of Sherrodsville High School. She was fond of Bingo and other games during her stay at the nursing home. Thelma always found joy in the time that she spent with her family. She is survived by her five children, Mrs. Karen (John) Evans of Sherrodsville; John H. (Eileen) Whitehair Jr. of Alliance, OH; Judy Walters of Sherrodsville; Jerry Whitehair of Massillon, OH; and Mark Whitehair of New Philadelphia, OH; a sister, Donna Anderson of Sherrodsville; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and her beloved cat “Miss Kitty”. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2018 in the Calvary United Methodist Church at Sherrodsville with Rev. Kenneth Ogg officiating. Interment followed in the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens. Calling hours were held Sunday from 4-6 p.m., also at the church. The Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville handled arrangements. Sharon Raychell Corrales
Sharon Raychell Corrales, 47, of Dellroy, Ohio, passed away early Tuesday morning, Nov. 27, 2018 in the Community Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia. She was born May 6, 1971 in Spring Hill, Louisiana and was the daughter of Lynda S. Shaver Williams and the late Clyde Raymond “Ray” Smith. Sharon was primarily a mother and a homemaker who loved to spend her time around their Atwood Lake area home. Here, she was able to practice her favorite hobby, which was growing and caring for her various plants. She was fond of music of all types and loved animals, most particularly her miniature poodle, Myles. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, daughter and sister who will be missed by her family. She is survived by her husband, James Robert “Bert” Corrales, Jr., whom she married Dec. 29, 1995; her mother and step-father Lynda S. and Gerald Williams of Haughton, Lousiana; two daughters, Brittany Rae Corrales Knipp and Kilie Brooke Corrales, both of Dellroy; a brother, Shane Everett Smith of Haughton, Louisiana; and a sister-in-law, Mimi Whatley of Benton, Louisiana. A graveside service was observed at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018 in the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Lisa Elliot officiating. There were no public calling hours scheduled, but a private family visitation was observed. The Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville is handling arrangements. Irene M. Mahoney
Irene M. Mahoney, 98, of West Lafayette, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2018. Irene was born on March 18, 1920, in Burton City, Ohio, to the late Albert and Edna (Sprunger) Hatt. She graduated from Canal Fulton High School in 1938. On May 6, 1944, she married Elmer J. Mahoney, who passed away Jan. 18, 1980. She was retired from Surety Rubber after 30 years. She was an active member of the Dellroy United Methodist Church, serving on various committees, and holding the office of president and treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed traveling, playing the organ, reading, using the computer, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Irene was survived by daughters, Edna Stavano of Carrollton and Joyce (Dennis) Bahmer of West Lafayette; sister-in-law Edna Hatt of Massillon; and son-in-law Glen Best of Fredericksburg, Va. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter (Dorothy) Hatt of Orrville; Lloyd (Henrietta) Hatt of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; and Roy Hatt of North Lawrence; a daughter, Esther Best of Fredericksburg, VA; and two great-grandsons. A Celebration of Life for Irene will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, at 1:30 p.m., at the Dellroy United Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Ogg leading the service. Toys for Tots teams up with oil, gas industry Toys for Tots Foundations teams with Oil and Gas industry to bring holiday cheer For the fifth year in a row Ohio’s oil and gas industry is partnering with the Toys for Tots Foundation to distribute toys throughout southeastern Ohio. Many churches, social organizations, and local businesses, among others, collect toys this time of year for the Foundation’s efforts, and the oil and gas industry is coming together with the Ohio Oil and Gas Association (OOGA) to coordinate the distribution of the toys to local families in need. OOGA’s members that are participating this year are MarkWest, Ascent Resources, EdgeMarc Energy, XTO Energy and Williams. Carroll County resident and Foundation Coordinator Deb Oberlin is once again leading the entire effort not only for her home county but most of southeast Ohio. According to Deb, who has been honored by the United States Marine Corp and Duracell over the years for her longtime efforts for the Foundation, “Each year my family and I work to provide toys for the kids of Appalachia through the Foundation and appreciate our partners in the oil and gas industry.” Ohio Oil and Gas Association spokesman Mike Chadsey says, “We are so grateful for Deb and her entire team at the Toys for Tots Foundation for the willingness to work with us and our member companies on toy collection and distribution, as we know there is a need in our operating areas and we want to do our part to serve our neigh-

Buckeye program creating wreaths, grave pillows to sell One might think the Landscaping & Turf Management students at Buckeye Career Center have little to do during the winter months, but this thought is debunked with just one look inside the Landscaping lab. The concrete floor is covered in tree greens, the aroma is pine scented, and hands are sticky with tree sap. December is wreath and grave decoration month for Landscaping students as they take a break from mowing, weed-eating, mulching, and designing outdoor landscapes and brick paver projects. Students have been busy filling dozens of orders ahead of the Christmas holiday but they recently took time to explain why they chose Landscaping and how the skills they are learning are already helping in their lives outside of school. Michael Morrison, a senior from Carrollton, spent his summer working as summer help for Buckeye. He mowed the grass and maintained the flowerbeds. Morrison prefers the summer work of the Landscaping program but is happy to be learning skills that can keep him busy in the winter months, such as wreath making. “We went to a tree farm last week and got the greens. Several trees were already down and we cut them up and brought the greens back to school and are now making the wreaths. I enjoy decorating them,” said
Morrison. Tyler Fenton is also a senior from Carrollton in the Landscaping program who is benefiting from what he has learned in the program as he operates his own business after school and on the weekends. “I haul gravel, mulch, and do snow removal. I learned a lot of it through Buckeye,” said Fenton. Fenton hopes to become a fulltime firefighter one day but plans to earn additional income with his landscaping knowledge. He also believes his skills could be used when he becomes a homeowner. “If I do buy a house, I can do this stuff (landscaping) myself for cheaper,” he said. Thanks for the Memories Guest Column By TODD HERMAN
Conotton Valley Schools Superintendent Recently, many of us were able to enjoy Thanksgiving celebrations with our family and friends. I was lucky enough to host many of my family and successfully cooked my first turkey. There were many anxious moments in the approaching days. I could only imagine what I might do if the bird did not come out of the oven in an acceptable manner. To put myself at ease, I decided if I did indeed burn the turkey, we would be making a trip to Dutch Valley. However, everything worked out fine. The turkey was great and we had plenty of leftovers. After dinner, we had several things going on throughout the house. Some people were playing UNO with these giant cards that my daughter bought. They were so big (about the size of an 8 X 10 piece of paper) my nephew could only see one card at a time. He kept running in the other room to show his dad what cards he acquired. Another group was sitting around
talking about old times while the rest were watching football and nodding off! Nevertheless, it was a great time. We were able to share some quality time together and make some memories that will be shared at future gatherings. Over the last several years, I have really made it a point to have more time with the family. Often times, I find myself spending too much time at work or with my work family. I love my job and my community so it is easy to do. With that being said, my true reason for doing what I do is to provide for my family. My suggestion for each of you is to remember your WHY. Do not follow my lead! Make it a point to spend time with your family and friends on a regular basis. Make those memories that you will reminisce about for years. Don’t wait for the next holiday. There is no better time than the present! On Dec. 4, our elementary students held their Christmas concert. Grades 5 to 12 will hold their Christmas concert at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11. Come out and make some memories with the Rockets!
