Shaping the World – 75 years Die Neuordnung der Welt – 75 after the Potsdam Conference Jahre Potsdamer Konferenz In July 1945, the three main allies of the Second World War met at the Cecilienhof palace in Potsdam to discuss Germany’s future and the ongoing war in the Pacific. In 2020, this important, historic event is the topic of a major exhibition.
Vor bald 75 Jahren, im Juli 1945, trafen sich die drei Hauptalliierten des Zweiten Weltkriegs im Potsdamer Schloss Cecilienhof, um über die Zukunft Deutschlands und den noch anhaltenden Krieg im Pazifik zu beraten. Eine Ausstellung widmet sich 2020 diesem einschneidenden historischen Ereignis.
At the original site of the historic events, visitors can immerse themselves in the authentic atmosphere. “There are only a few places in the world where one can feel history come to life. Cecilienhof is such a place,” says curator Matthias Simmich.
Am Originalschauplatz der historischen Ereignisse können Besucher in eine lebendige und anschauliche Atmosphäre eintauchen. „Es gibt wenige Orte in der Welt, an denen man den ‚Hauch der Geschichte‘ spüren kann. Cecilienhof ist ein solcher Ort“, sagt der Kurator der Ausstellung, Matthias Simmich.
The memories of 94-year-old Joy Hunter guide visitors through the exhibition. At the age of 19, she had been secretary to the British prime minister, Winston Churchill, and recorded everything she observed in her diary: “Even though she experienced the German air raids on London, she never expressed any resentment. On the contrary, great humanity can be found in her lines,” says Simmich.
Die Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse der heute 94-jährigen Zeitzeugin Joy Hunter liefern den Leitfaden für die Ausstellung. Die damals 19-jährige Britin war Sekretärin des britischen Premierministers Winston Churchill. Was sie in Potsdam erlebte, hielt sie detailgetreu in ihren Tagebüchern fest: „Obwohl sie selber die deutschen Luftangriffe auf London erlebte, äußert sie keinen Groll auf die Deutschen. Aus vielen Zeilen spricht große Menschlichkeit“, erzählt Simmich.
One focus lies on the consequences for Asia and the Middle East. The museum shows two everyday objects from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Japan, that were found in the centre of where the atomic explosion took place. “They stand for the unimaginable suffering of survivors and relatives.” 34 | Issue 82 | January 2020

Ein großer Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung liegt auch auf den Folgen für Asien und den mittleren Osten. So zeigt das Museum zwei Originalexponate aus dem Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Japan: Die beiden Alltagsgegenstände stammen aus dem Zentrum der atomaren Zerstörung. „Sie stehen für das unermessliche Leid der Überlebenden und Hinterbliebenen.“
