To keep history alive, there are plenty of cultural events. Every Thursday at 8.30pm, guests can enjoy an appearance of the ‘in-house devil’ at Großer Keller. Various other entertaining arrangements with other cultural organisations such as the cabaret ‘Krystallpalast’ and the Zoo Leipzig frequently take place also. Since 2013, Auerbachs Keller has also been an official stop along the historic Luther Trail and is visited by international pilgrims.

Guests come from far and wide to Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig and they have been doing so for centuries. The legendary tavern was indeed famous long before Goethe appeared. In 1525, Dr. med. When Goethe started his studies in Leipzig in 1765, Auerbachs Keller was already a popular location and known far beyond the city. No wonder Goethe spent 94  |  Issue 74  |  May 2019

so much time here and was ultimately inspired by two old Faust pictures to write his world-famous Faust composition. Today, Auerbachs Keller spreads over four levels with 92 rooms on 2,685 square metres and has almost 90 employees. It’s not only a top address to unwind at, but it’s also perfect for events. “We have over 650 seats located across the restaurants Großer Keller, Historische Weinstube and our Mephisto-Bar,” says managing director René Stoffregen. “These spaces are suitable for annual conventions of federal associations, conference dinners, trade fair evening events,

Stoffregen adds: “After almost 500 years, these ancient vaults are still a place where rich history and modern socialising harmonise perfectly.”
