Better digital products for satisfied users thanks to crowd and cloud With the motto ‘Testing Reality – Real Users. Real Devices. Real Time.’, the Munich-based company Testbirds offers different types of tests to optimise the usability and functionality of digital products. Next to a ‘Device Cloud’, Testbirds counts on a network of professional testers and real end-users. TEXT: JESSICA HOLZHAUSEN I PHOTOS: TESTBIRDS
Testbirds is a young, successful company: in 2011, the three founders and today’s managers, Philipp Benkler, Georg Hansbauer and Markus Steinhauser, came together to help companies to enhance their digital products. From the very beginning, the company trusted the power of the crowd and combined crowdsourcing, for example, the internet community’s swarm intelligence, with software tests. The ‘crowdtesting’ approach convinced clients and investors, such is its reliability. Today, Testbirds has grown to more than 100 employees and, next to its main office in Munich, now has branches in Amsterdam, London and Stockholm. – no matter if apps, websites, or Internetof-Things-Applications (IoT). Crowtesting relies on unbiased real users, who are chosen according to target and user groups. That way, companies get feedback from those they actually want to reach and do not have to rely on laboratory experiments alone. Using their own devices, test-users search for bugs and usability problems and companies get detailed descriptions of problems, as well as clear recommendations for actions. While the first testers originated from the DACH-region, today, the test community includes more than 350,000 registered users from 193 countries. That makes Testbirds one of the worldwide leading crowdtesting companies. Thanks to crowdtesting, more than 550,000 different devices are available for tests – from desktop computers to mo-
bile or IoT devices. They use very different operating systems and browsers, making sure that companies gain a comprehensive picture of functionalities and user friendliness. It does not matter whether this involves apps, wearables, classic software or an intelligent hover: all data collected can be utilised. Self-developed tests executed by using the Device Cloud Next to crowdtesting, Testbirds also offers an innovative cloud technology that allows clients to easily and independently run self-developed tests: they can check their software manually or automatically using virtual machines, emulators or real devices (Android & iOS). The possibilities are nearly unlimited, because the ‘Device Cloud’ allows millions of different combinations of devices, operating systems and browser constellations. Companies have parallel access to several devices and can therefore develop new applications much quicker. In short: tests, that once took hours, can now be done in only a few minutes. www.testbirds.com
