A REGION IN THE SPOTLIGHT WELCOME TO EUROPE’S CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2025

Following the motto ‘C the Unseen’, Chemnitz invites visitors to rediscover the region’s cultural diversity. A close partnership between the city and the surrounding Chemnitz region, including the Erzgebirge, ensures a focus on what often remains hidden: the people, places and activities that shape the unique culture of this area. One highlight of the cultural year and beyond will be the PURPLE PATH, a trail featuring art works and sculptures. This unique path showcases works by national and international artists united by the theme ‘Everything comes from the mountain’ and leads from Chemnitz also through the Erzgebirge. Deeply rooted in the area’s 800-year mining history - a legacy recognised by UNESCO World Heritage status since 2019 - the PURPLE PATH offers a fresh perspective on the region’s cultural landscape. wealth of cultural experiences and outdoor activities. Visitors can explore the mining history up-close in picturesque mountain towns like Freiberg, Schneeberg, Annaberg-Buchholz or Marienberg, tour the UNESCO-listed Ore Mountain region, or trek and cycle through stunning natural landscapes. and loved as it is in the Erzgebirge,” Daniela Mynett from the Erzgebirge Tourist Board says. “The windows glow with Schwibbogen candle arches, pyramids spin at the region’s Christmas markets, and the miners’ parades are an absolute highlight of the year.” This tradition often continues until 02 February, revealing the region’s deep mining heritage. Though a magical destination at Christmas, the Erzgebirge has plenty to discover all year round. A hidden gem: the traditional woodcrafts of Seiffen, where nutcrackers and incense smokers are still made by hand. At the Seiffen Open-Air Museum, visitors can watch rare ring-turning – a skill mastered by only a few craftsmen today. The swirling wood shavings are also echoed in the sculpture ‘Twister’ by Alice Aycock, which has found its place along the PURPLE PATH at the Seiffen OpenAir Museum. The city of Chemnitz and the capital of culture’s region have done it – in 2025, they will bear the prestigious title of ‘European Capital of Culture’. With this honour, Chemnitz is taking on a mission to reveal the unseen and overlooked treasures of the region.
