Dear Reader, I recently watched the Indian version of hit TV reality show The Traitors and was mesmerised by the contestants switching between different languages so effortlessly. I learned that one contestant, Elnaaz Norouzi, has German roots so I wanted to find out more. As an actress and singer, she has built a career across countries, languages and industries, and now steps into her first Hollywood leading role in The Fix, alongside Liam Neeson and Zachary Levi. In our interview, she reflects on patience, ambition and the experiences that have shaped her along the way. Her story is one of persistence, but also of openness to new places, to new audiences and to new possibilities. Her story is somewhat perfect for October because it speaks to transition and the courage to step into something new. All of these qualities feel especially resonant as the season changes around us. That sense of transition also runs through this issue’s special theme on viticulture. After all, autumn is when vineyards come into their own, as the harvest begins and landscapes across Switzerland shift

into their most atmospheric colours. We turn our attention to the wines of Switzerland, from the historic estate of Schloss Salenegg in Maienfeld to Weingut Hämmerli’s distinctive wines. Fittingly, in a celebration of autumn among the vineyards, we also explore wine hikes that combine fresh air, local history and spectacular views. Furthermore, autumn is a season for slowing down and taking care of ourselves, which is why our wellness guide brings together selected hotels, resorts and spa retreats across the DACH region. Last but not least, we spend a weekend in Stuttgart, find out more about exclusive hotels, special destinations, museums, interior designers, fashion pieces and much more. Sit back, relax and thanks for reading!

ZWISCHEN WORKWEAR AND FASHION – MODERNE PREMIUM-BERUFSMODE VON CLINIC DRESS Das Aussehen von Berufsbekleidung hat sich auch im Gesundheitswesen in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten deutlich verändert. FOTOS: CLINIC DRESS

KRINNER: INNOVATIONS FOR STRESS-FREE CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES

There are products that become part of our lives year after year – products that are far more than functional items. They accompany rituals, provide a sense of reliability, and

REAL SOLUTIONS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE According to Karsten Eibach, CEO of KRINNER, the company was founded with a clear mission: “to make everyday problems less stressful and simply make things better.” This guiding principle remains the brand's central theme to this day. Their breakthrough came with an invention that transformed Christmas tree setup in many households: the Christmas tree stand featuring the ‘original single-cable technology’. Tasks that previously often required two people, considerable physical effort, and a fair amount of frustration became significantly easier, safer,

For decades now, KRINNER has been standing for solutions that make Christmas and everyday life easier – from their ingenious Christmas tree stand technology to the new magnetically extendable Christmas string lights. What began with a practical solution has grown into a family-owned international

business that combines convenience, safety, and design with German engineering.

I

In 1990, Klaus Krinner – farmer, inventor, and founder of KRINNER – was setting up his Christmas tree. Like many of us, he had struggled with the challenge of getting a Nordmann fir to stand securely. But instead of accepting the fact that the classic screw stand was a serious source of frustration, he set to work and soon came up with an invention that changed the way Christmas trees were set up: the KRINNER stand with its single cable and foot pedal mechanism, now known as the “original single-cable technology.”

This is precisely the area where KRINNER operates: in situations where setting up a Christmas tree can become a frustrating test of patience, the company has always relied on intuitive technology to make these moments easier for its customers.

Discover Germany, Switzerland & Austria and more convenient. The principle is as intuitive as it is effective: a single cable wraps four claws evenly around the trunk, securing it with an even distribution of force, regardless of whether the trunk is perfectly straight or slightly crooked. "KRINNER’s original single-cable technology allows a single person to set up the tree quickly, conveniently, and, above all, safely," explains Eibach who has been with the company for over 25 years. It is precisely this combination of ease of use and safety that has helped establish KRINNER as an internationally recognized brand. Yet the brand does not rest on its laurels. On the contrary: for the company, the success story of the original KRINNER Christmas tree stand is not an endpoint, but a starting point. German-made quality, technical expertise, and continuous development remain hallmarks of the portfolio to this day. In addition to the well-known Christmas tree stands, the range now includes smart garden products and lighting solutions from the LUMIX brand. “INNOVATION IS WHAT WE THRIVE ON!” One example of this consistent expansion is the KRINNER NORDIC, developed specifically

for artificial Christmas trees up to 2.5 meters tall. With this product, KRINNER is responding to a growing market segment that also demands higher standards of aesthetics and functionality. The NORDIC combines Scandinavian-inspired, minimalist design with sturdy bamboo legs that exude warmth and modern understated elegance. Six adjustment screws secure the tree precisely and reliably. In doing so, KRINNER brings its core strengths of stability, quality, and ease of use to a new living environment. After all, even as artificial trees become increasingly commonplace, they should blend harmoniously into

The innovative spirit behind the patented LUMIX MAGNET-it! string lights takes an even more playful approach. Described as "the world’s first magnetically extendable Christmas tree lights," this new product introduces an idea that seems almost obvious once you hear it: light segments connect almost automatically with a magnetic click. Instead of the hassle of untangling cables, hunting for connections, or improvising lengths, the lighting can be adapted modularly to fit both the tree and the room. Each segment features 25 LEDs and can flexibly be extended, shortened, or arranged individually. Various lighting modes, a dimming function, a powerful ‘SuperLight’ mode, and timer settings give users the freedom to create the desired atmosphere, ranging from a soft glow to festive brilliance. "With LUMIX MAGNET-it!, KRINNER combines a truly innovative technology with maximum flexibility and ease of use," says Eibach. The solution also looks beyond the holiday season: the individual light segments can be detached and stored compactly, making both decorating and taking down the lights more convenient. What unites all KRINNER products is the desire to make tradition easier. That is why KRINNER comes across less as a classic manufacturer of seasonal products and more as a specialist in festive ease. The Christmas tree stand ensures a secure hold, the NORDIC brings a sense of design to the artificial tree segment, and LUMIX MAGNET-it! makes lighting more flexible than ever. “Today, our customers associate KRINNER with reliable, high-quality solutions that make Christmas more relaxed,” explains Eibach. This sentence sums up the core idea: products that do not dominate but enable. They provide stability, light, and order, giving more space back to the most beautiful part of the holiday – that special shared moment when the tree is standing, the lights come on, and Christmas can finally begin.

Bewährte Qualität in neuem Design: KRINNER X-440.

Since entrepreneur Dieter Wagner founded Futonwerk in 1988, the company has been producing top-quality futons (Futonwerk), natural latex mattresses (Neonatura), as well as natural mattress toppers in its own manufacturing facility, all of which contribute to a restful night’s sleep. “For us, nature takes centre stage through German craftsmanship in connection with selected raw materials that are consistently tested for harmful substances,” explains product expert and consultant Ulrich Gaupp. “And that means the highest quality, always.” Customers identify with the company’s ethical and ecological values which focus on long-term sleep quality rather than short-term consumerism. The products’ durability is one of the main arguments in terms of sustainability. “Our customers carefully consider all the information we provide, whether on our website, during a personal conversation on the phone or a

“The Henley, in many ways, is a blueprint for the brand’s philosophy: thoughtfully designed, responsibly produced essentials that are rooted in workwear and stand the test of time,” explains Peter Plotnicki, co-founder and CEO. With this revival, Merz b. Schwanen set out to create a brand that honours authenticity, patience, timelessness and quality, seamlessly reconnecting contemporary wardrobes with Germany’s rich textile heritage. The company’s philosophy is simple yet profound: to produce clothing that stands the test of time, grounded in workwear tradition and classic design. In the heart of the Swabian Alps, a region once at the centre of Germany’s thriving textile industry, a remarkable story of rediscovery and revival has unfolded. Merz b. Schwanen, a brand with roots dating back to 1911, was given new life in 2011 by Gitta and Peter Plotnicki. Their journey began with a serendipitous find: a nearly century-old Henley shirt at a Berlin flea market. Intrigued by its superior quality, tactile charm, and seamless construction, the couple traced its origin to the historic workshops of the Swabian Alps. There, they uncovered original loopwheel knitting machines too – some over a hundred years old – and felt compelled to breathe new life into both the machinery and the storied craftsmanship they represent.

breathing the principles of slow fashion. Many of its garments are produced on the original loopwheel machines in Germany, where time and precision are essential. Creating a single t-shirt on these vintage machines is a process that cannot be rushed and is a testament to the belief that the best things in life take time. For example, “it takes 25 minutes just to warp knit the fabric for a t-shirt, followed by another 30 minutes for cutting and carefully finishing meticulous details such as the neckline and the signature triangular insert under the arms,” explains Gitta Plotnicki, co-founder and creative director.

Discover Germany, Switzerland & Austria Schwanen’s dedication to ethical production and environmental stewardship. The brand’s use of organic cotton, recycled cashmere, and natural fibres, along with a commitment to minimising waste and overproduction, ensures that sustainability is woven into every decision. Each garment is built to last – “through quality, thoughtful design, and ethical practices for our planet and its people,” says Gitta. Amidst international competition and ever-accelerating fashion cycles, Merz b. Schwanen’s relevance is rooted in its unwavering commitment to its core values. “We stay trye to our values, rather than chasing trends,” adds Peter. By focusing on high-quality materials, ethical manufacturing, and timeless design, the brand has cultivated a loyal community around the globe. Its modern interpretation of slow fashion offers a compelling alternative to the noise of passing trends and disposable clothing that will eventually end in landfills, proving that heritage, quality, and sustainability never go out of style.

AUTUMN/WINTER 2026: I GOT LOVE As the season turns inward, Merz b. Schwanen’s Autumn/Winter 2026 collection explores a quieter kind of richness — one defined not by excess, but by comfort, connection, and the things that genuinely nourish everyday life. Inspired by the song I Got Love, the collection reflects on the idea of enoughness: choosing what feels right, what lasts, and what brings a sense of ease. Natural materials and tactile surfaces take centre stage, with wool, cotton, silk, and cashmere bringing warmth, softness, and depth to familiar silhouettes. Among the season’s highlights is the Wool Tweed Jacket, crafted from 100 per cent mulesing-free lambswool and offered in both cropped and regular versions. Rich in texture and naturally insulating, it brings a refined yet effortless quality to a timeless shape. The Cotton Herringbone Straight Leg Pants introduce a sturdier character through their structured herringbone fabric, balancing durability with an easy, understated sil-

houette. The Knitted Henley offers a softer expression of the collection, blending silk, fine cashmere, and wool into a lightweight yet warming layer with an exceptionally soft hand feel. Together, these pieces embody the spirit of Autumn/Winter 2026: honest materials, thoughtful craftsmanship, and garments designed to become part of everyday life. In a world shaped by speed and constant wanting, the collection is a reminder to slow down, reconnect, and appreciate what is already enough. In a world that moves ever faster, Merz b. Schwanen stands as a quiet reminder that true style is born from patience, purpose, and enduring values. With every stitch, the brand invites us to slow down, appreciate authenticity, and embrace garments that are made to last – cherished now and for years to come. www.merzbschwanen.com

There is a particular kind of light in Swiss vineyards in autumn. Summer’s high gloss gives way to something earthier: harvest baskets, cellar doors, leaves turning copper, and walking paths that seem to lead as naturally to a glass of wine as to a viewpoint. Switzerland is rarely the first country mentioned in conversations about wine tourism, which is exactly why its vineyard trails feel so rewarding. Much of the wine is produced in modest quantities and enjoyed close to home, meaning a walk through the vines can feel less like a polished route around famous labels and more like an invitation into a living landscape. The hiking is part of the pleasure, but so is the sense of discovery: a small cellar, a family story, a grape variety you may not have encountered before. AT THE HEART OF THE HARVEST That feeling becomes even stronger during harvest. In September, more than 30 estates across Switzerland’s six wine-growing regions opened their vineyards and cellars for the sixth edition of Au cœur des vendanges, which translates to at the heart of the grape harvest. Visitors were able to take up pruning shears, harvest grapes themselves, follow the journey from vineyard to cellar and sit down afterwards for tastings and regional 28

food. In 2025, the initiative drew more than 600 participants across 42 wine estates — proof that the appetite for immersive, handson wine experiences is growing. For Esther Meyer, director of Domaine Château du Crest in Geneva, such encounters are about far more than a pleasant tasting. “Welcoming visitors into our vineyards is about much more than just sharing a moment over wine. profession and showing them all the hard work that goes into every bottle,” she explains. “Au cœur des vendanges offers the chance to experience the harvest in a friendly, authentic atmosphere, while gaining an appreciation for the expertise and passion it demands.” TOP WINE HIKES IN SWITZERLAND For wine enthusiasts, combining this special autumnal event with wine hikes offers a great way to experience Swiss wine heritage to the

Discover Germany, Switzerland & Austria fullest. One of the more cinematic wine hikes begins in Lavaux and slips through steep terraces stacked above Lake Geneva between St-Saphorin and Lutry. Across the water, the Alps sit like a painted backdrop. Narrow lanes, stone walls, old winegrowers’ houses and little villages line the path. In autumn, Lavaux becomes especially persuasive. The vines glow amber and bronze, the lake throws back the light, and the classic local grape, Chasselas, feels perfectly suited to the setting: crisp, understated and made for drinking with a view. The full route is around 11 kilometres, though its real pleasure lies in not treating it like a checklist. Stop often. Look back. Let the train take you home when your legs or your curiosity have had enough. If you are in the canton of Valais, the vineyard trail from Martigny to Leuk stretches for roughly 65 kilometres through the Rhône Valley, one of Switzerland’s most distinctive wine landscapes. It is a route that rewards time: serious walkers can take on several stages, while others can dip into a shorter section and still come away with the sense of having entered another world. The wines here have names that sound rooted in the mountains: Fendant, Petite Arvine, Cornalin. The villages bring another layer of character, with cellars, terraces and restaurants that make the connection between path and plate feel effortless. For something more vertical in Valais, head above Visp to Visperterminen, where vineyards climb to remarkable heights and the walking takes on a distinctly Alpine mood. The terraces here seem to defy the landscape, rising towards the village in a succession of stone, vine and sky. The route asks a little more of the legs than a lakeside stroll, but that effort is part of its appeal. The wine to know is Heida, a mountain white prized for its freshness and mineral character. After the climb, it tastes exactly as it should: shaped by altitude, sunlight and stone. For a gentler hike, head to Bielersee Rebenweg, one of Switzerland’s most quietly photogenic wine walks, easy to reach by public transport. Set above Lake Biel, it impresses with shimmering lake vistas, gentle hill slopes, and the sequence of wine villages such as Twann and Ligerz October 2026

Autumn in Switzerland’s Vineyards Merlot World Championship. The dominant grape here is Merlot, but the lasting impression is broader: warm light, chestnut forests, grotto-style meals and family cellars where the person pouring the wine may also have helped make it. Stops at Piccola Vigna, Ortelli Vini and La Costa show how intimate those bigger claims can become. Piccola Vigna began with Piermarco Soldini, who first made wine from a family vineyard once tended by his father, before Pierwalter Trapletti joined him in 1998. It remains deliberately modest and family-run, balancing professional know-how with the spirit of a hobby carried seriously. Its purpose is expressed simply: “The feeling that unites us is the desire to preserve the great winemaking tradition of our region.”

Photo: © www.swisswine.com

The Three-Lakes region is known for Chasselas and Pinot Noir, and the landscape has a different register from the drama of Valais or Lavaux. It is intimate, unhurried and full of small rewards like a church tower above the vines, a bench facing the water, a cellar sign at just the right moment.

of vineyards, yet the encounters remain personal. Rocco Travella, former Olympic cyclist and Bike’n’Wine guide, captures the relaxed philosophy neatly: “Wine doesn’t necessarily need to be the star in the room. Sometimes it can simply accompany other plates and dishes.”

Travella speaks with particular pride about the region’s soils and position. “Thanks to our location and our soils, we have very unique terroirs,” he says, pointing to recognition at the Grand Prix des Vins Suisses and the

Then there is Mendrisiotto, Ticino’s southernmost and most vineyard-rich region, where the Swiss wine hike takes on a warmer, Italian-speaking cadence. Around Mendrisio and Balerna, low hills, stone villages and vine-striped slopes create a landscape that feels made for slow movement. Here, hikers can choose between three themed wine trails. For example, the Man and Grapevine loop trail takes visitors to places that tell the story of Mendrisiotto’s wine production and viticulture. At Borgovecchio vini in Balerna, a Bike’n’Wine tour adds a playful variation on the classic vineyard walk: a half-day ride through the region, with stops at local wineries, plates of specialities and conversations with producers who work close to the land. The experience is less about chasing famous labels than understanding scale. Mendrisiotto accounts for around 40 per cent of Ticino’s wine production, with 360 hectares 32

That, ultimately, is what makes autumn wine hiking in Switzerland so memorable. The scenery may be spectacular, but the deeper pleasure lies in proximity: to the harvest, to local varieties, to villages shaped by vines and to winemakers who are still close enough to their work to explain it with soil under their fingernails. "What makes Schloss Salenegg unique is the blend of nearly 1,000 years of winemaking history and a clear vision for the future," says Markus von Gugelberg. That very sentence aptly describes the atmosphere as here, tradition does not mean standing still – it is a calling. The estate has been in the von Gugelberg family since 1654 and today, Markus von Gugelberg manages it as the 20th generation. The enduring nature of this family history is palpable. Schloss Salenegg is situated in Maienfeld, framed by vineyards, mountains, and the distinctive light that makes Graubünden so unique. Wine has been cultivated here since 1068, making Schloss Salenegg Europe’s oldest, yet vibrant winery. Despite its age, the place feels nothing like a museum. It thrives on a delicate balance: history that is not merely preserved but actively carried forward; craftsmanship rooted in experience; and a culture of hospitality that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the grape.

The Wines of Switzerland early as 950, and viticulture has been documented there since 1068. The historic estate brings together various eras, ranging from the old cellar to the wine press in the Torkel (press house). not least in the mindset with which work is carried out at Salenegg. A CASTLE, A CELLAR, A PLACE TO EXPERIENCE WINE Schloss Salenegg consciously positions itself as a place where wine can be truly experienced. Visitors can taste the wines right where they are produced and gain insights into the vineyards, the cellar, and the modern press house during guided tours. The tasting itself is an invitation to strike up a conversation. "Visitors can expect far more than a classic wine tasting here," says Sonja Boppart from the marketing team. This openness defines the character of the estate.

Tastings and sales are available from Monday to Friday, as well as on the first Saturday of every month, and no bookings are necessary. Those who drop by spontaneously will discover a world of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignac, Rhein Riesling, and other specialties, along with stories about vintages, soils, family decisions, and the evolution of winemaking. "It’s important to us that wine remains accessible to everyone and that connections are made in a relaxed, authentic atmosphere," says Boppart. Salenegg is also a place of architectural and cultural depth. The foundations for the castle and the surrounding vineyards were laid as

While Schloss Salenegg is steeped in tradition, its vineyard operations are forward-looking. Here, sustainability is not merely a buzzword but an integral part of daily craftsmanship. "For us, sustainability begins in the vineyard. Healthy soils are the foundation for high-quality grapes," says winemaker Silas Hörler. Consequently, the estate eschews insecticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers, fostering biodiversity instead. Since 2020, the most extensive restructuring of the vineyard areas since 1906 has been underway. New vineyards have been laid out to foster the greatest possible biodiversity. Alongside classic varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, fungus-resistant PIWI varieties – including Sauvignac and Cabernet Blanc – now play a significant role. They exemplify the effort to integrate quality, climate adaptation, and resource conservation. "For us, these are not a compromise, but rather alternatives that are equal in quality and forward-looking," explains Hörler.

In the wine cellar, too, Salenegg relies on an interplay of experience and technology. The aim is not to mask nature, but to precisely bring out its distinctive characteristics. Pinot Noir, deeply rooted in the region as Blauburgunder, is as much a part of the portfolio as Chardonnay and the new PIWI varieties. The wines regularly win awards, yet what matters more than any single prize is the philosophy behind them: every bottle is intended to convey its origin, the care taken in its production, and a clear sense of style.

years of history. "The fundamental idea has remained the same to this day: wine should be more than just a beverage," concludes Markus von Gugelberg. And at Schloss Salenegg, this becomes a promise to the region, to nature, and to everyone who wishes not just to drink wine, but to experience it. www.schloss-salenegg.ch

THE WHOLE GRAPE, THE WHOLE PLEASURE To view Schloss Salenegg solely in terms of wine is to overlook a key part of its philosophy. The estate takes a holistic approach to the grape. In addition to wines, it produces gourmet vinegars, cold-pressed grape seed oil, verjus, grape juice spritzers, and spirits. "Our goal is to utilise the entire grape and unlock its full potential – out of respect for nature and the precious resources it bestows upon us," explains Helene von Gugelberg. Salenegg Castle is thus an ideal place to slow down and embark on a culinary journey of discovery. Visitors come for the wines, stay for the atmosphere, and leave with the feeling of having become part of a long, living story. Amidst the rows of vines, the barrel cellar and the historic wine press house, it becomes clear just how much of the present can be found within nearly a thousand 38

Among the estate’s long-standing favourites is the Hämmerli Sauvignon Blanc, admired for its freshness and finesse. Also highly recommended is the Syrah, which ranks among Switzerland’s top six Syrahs, was nominated at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse and was awarded a gold medal. The estate’s rosé wines and the distinctive wines from St. Petersinsel have equally become increasingly popular. Visitors can experience the wines where they are made. From spring to summer, the Vin&Vue wine terrace invites guests to relax over a wine tasting, a traditional Flammkuchen or a glass of wine overlooking the vineyards. Private tours and tastings offer a fascinating insight into life behind the scenes. Looking ahead, the estate is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary in summer 2027 with a collection of wines, produced just once in limited quantities – an opportunity for wine lovers to own a small piece of Hämmerli’s history. www.weingut-haemmerli.swiss

They give each of our wines its own character and form the foundation of our three wine ranges: Hämmerli, Vully. and St. Petersinsel. Today, these vineyards produce more than 30 different wines, from classic grape varieties to new and innovative creations.” Tradition and experience are combined with a commitment to quality and a willingness to embrace new ideas.

Lakes Biel, Neuchâtel and Murten, together with a variety of soils and microclimates, creates ideal conditions for expressive wines with real character. Elnaaz Norouzi

ELNAAZ NOROUZI: “I DON’T WANT TO FIT INTO ONE BOX” Actress and singer Elnaaz Norouzi has crossed borders, languages and industries. As she steps into her first Hollywood leading role in The Fix alongside Liam Neeson and Zachary Levi, she reflects on patience, identity, ambition and the worlds that shaped her, from Tehran and Hannover to Mumbai, and Bollywood to international cinema. TEXT: NANE STEINHOFF

Before the streaming breakthrough, before the international film sets, before audiences knew her as Zoya Mirza and Jamila in the Netflix series Sacred Games, Elnaaz Norouzi was a child in Germany sitting in front of the television, dreaming of one day becoming an actress. “Acting was actually the dream long before modelling,” she says. “As a little girl, I was fascinated by the people I saw on television. I would imitate actors, copy their expressions and memorise entire scenes.” To her, commercial breaks became somewhat of a private acting school: “One advertisement would finish and I could already recite it before the next one.”

When she was 14, she started modelling which carried her into professional spaces, across countries and in front of cameras, but it did not replace her original dream. “Modelling gave me the courage to leave what was familiar, travel and become comfortable in front of a camera,” she explains. The larger leap came later, when she moved to India to pursue acting seriously. Bollywood was not an obvious route for a young woman raised in Germany, but Elnaaz has rarely seemed interested in obvious routes. “Perhaps that was exactly why I wanted to try it,” she says. “I’m a bit crazy that way, I love challenges.”

Elnaaz Norouzi moved through the world. “I wasn’t only entering a new film industry. I was learning an entirely new country and culture at the same time.” The beginning demanded observation, humility and adjustment. “The greatest thing India taught me was patience, and also that different doesn’t mean wrong. I learned to observe and not to judge, to understand how other people think and to adapt without losing who I am.” That lesson is visible in the way Elnaaz talks about Indian storytelling itself. She sees its emotional directness not as excess, but as fluency. “Indian storytelling understands emotion instinctively,” she explains. “Cinema works when an audience recognises something human in a character, even when that character’s life looks nothing like their own. Indian cinema has never been afraid of emotion. It understands that audiences want to laugh, cry, fall in love, feel anger and leave the theatre having felt something.” MANY LANGUAGES, NO SINGLE BOX

Photo: Abhishek Masurkar

Since then, that appetite for risk has become the through-line of her career. Born in Tehran, raised in Hannover and professionally formed in Mumbai, Elnaaz speaks about place not as a fixed concept, but as reinvention. “I always say that I have three homes: Tehran, Hannover and Mumbai,” Elnaaz says. “Hopefully one day, I’ll be able to add Los Angeles as a fourth.” THE PATIENCE TO SAY NO Her first acting project in India was not chosen casually. In Netflix’s Sacred Games, Elnaaz played Zoya Mirza and Jamila, entering one of the defining Indian streaming series of its moment. “Sacred Games changed everything,” she says. “It was my first acting project in India, so I was very conscious that whatever I chose first would introduce me to the industry.” 44

There had been other offers, some of them “financially very attractive” but she refused to let urgency decide the shape of her beginning. “I kept saying no because I didn’t want my first project to simply be the first opportunity that came along,” she remembers. The gamble paid off. Sacred Games became a hit globally and earned international recognition, opening doors and changing the tone of conversations around her. “Personally, it also confirmed something I had believed for a long time: sometimes saying no to the wrong opportunity is just as important as saying yes to the right one.” After the success of Sacred Games, Elnaaz continued working across many Indian and international productions such as Apple TV's Tehran. India, she says, did not simply make her an actress, it changed the way she

If Sacred Games made the industry look at her differently, reality television gave audiences a chance to hear her differently. On the Indian version of The Traitors, Elnaaz found a format that appealed because it required “strategy, observation and intelligence.” It also offered public proof of something she knew privately. “People had seen me act in Hindi, but there were still people who assumed that perhaps I simply memorised my lines phonetically,” she says. “On The Traitors, there is nowhere to hide.” As seen on The Traitors, Elnaaz works across many languages, including Farsi, German, Hindi and English. “Speaking a language and acting convincingly in that language are two very different things,” she says. “Acting is difficult enough in your mother tongue; doing it in your third, fourth or fifth language requires another level of command because you cannot be translating in your head while trying to feel something truthfully.” “Farsi connects me to where I was born, German to where I grew up, Hindi to the industry where I built so much of my career, and English has opened an entirely new international chapter.” If casting sometimes struggles with artists who cannot be neatly categorised, she no longer sees that as

a weakness. “Being difficult to put into one box can occasionally make people wonder where exactly you belong,” she says. “I’ve learned to see that as a strength. I don’t necessarily want to fit into one box.” Germany remains one of those boxes she has carried. Hannover, where her parents still live, returns her to the girl she was “before all of this happened.” The German influence is practical, too: “Discipline, preparation, reliability and punctuality are so deeply ingrained in me that I don’t really think about them anymore,” she says. “If call time is a certain hour, being late simply isn’t an option in my mind.” Yet her gratitude runs deeper than professionalism. “My family had to flee Iran, and Germany gave us the opportunity to build a new life, gave me an education and eventually citizenship.” That freedom of movement later became career mobility. “I may not have German ancestry, but I feel very German in many ways. The country raised me.” HOLLYWOOD AND THE NEXT LEAP Now, with The Fix, Elnaaz steps into what she describes as “a major step forward” – her first leading role in a Hollywood film. In the Iran-set action thriller which came to cinemas on 11 September she stars alongside Liam Neeson and Zachary Levi, but what drew her first was her character Zara. “Zara was the kind of character actors hope for because she has so many layers,” she says. “The different layers gave me the opportunity to explore a wide emotional range.” Elnaaz adds: “The story is also set in Iran, which obviously has a very personal connection for me. When you put all of that together – the character, the director, the cast, the story and the personal connection – it was one of those projects where I couldn’t find a reason not to want it.” She describes the film as a thriller layered with “action, suspense, politics, relationships and characters whose motivations aren’t always what they first appear to be,” while also hoping it sparks curiosity about Iran beyond reductive headlines. “Iran is often discussed internationally in simplified terms,” she says. “The film is first and foremost a thriller, not a history lesson, but I hope it sparks curios-

ity in people who may know very little about Iran and its past.” Watching Neeson and Levi work up close confirmed something she hopes to carry forward. “What struck me most was how effortless great experience can look,” she says. “They’re present, prepared and incredibly natural.” The atmosphere challenged another assumption: “A serious set doesn’t have to feel serious every second. You can work at a high level and still have fun, be generous with the people around you and enjoy what you’re doing.” Elnaaz is also clear about the acting roles she wants next: “I want roles that demand

something from me that I haven’t had to give before. One of my biggest dreams is to lead a proper action film. I’ve had a taste of action in India, and I train in mixed martial arts, but I would love a role where the physicality is genuinely central to the character.” She adds: “If a role frightens me a little because I don’t immediately know how I’m going to do it, that’s usually a good sign.” Ultimately, she never wants to stop growing: “I don’t want to choose one country, one language or even one form of expression if I don’t have to.” It is a fitting manifesto for Elnaaz, whose life has been shaped by departure, reinvention and return. MUSEUM REINHARD ERNST WIESBADEN: A PASSION FOR ABSTRACTION Sprung from the passion for abstract art of entrepreneur and collector Reinhard Ernst, the collection kept growing across decades alongside his wish to share it sustainably with the public. This dream came to fruition with the 2024 opening. The building was designed by the Pritzker Award-winning architect Fumihiko Maki – the first and only of his museum buildings in Europe so far. As one of few institutions worldwide, the mre exclusively shows abstract art from 1945 until today. It invites visitors to experience art directly and without preconception. Through the interplay of architecture, art and atmosphere, the spacious rooms allow for an intensive encounter with the collection, which combines important positions from Europe, the US and Japan and opens up surprising perspectives on the international development of abstraction. Even visitors who have had little to none exposure to abstract art in the past discover quickly that here, it is all about perception, curiosity and the joy of experience. 48

FROM MONET AND PICASSO TO THE POWER OF ORNAMENT Von der Heydt Museum Wuppertal is one of Germany’s leading art museums. Its outstanding collection spans paintings and sculptures from the 17th century to the modern era, with a particular focus on 19th century art and classical modernism. Highlights include works by Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Wassily Kandinsky, Auguste Rodin and Alberto Giacometti. Together, these masterpieces offer a fascinating insight into the development of European art and make the museum a cultural landmark in the heart of Wuppertal. we perceive the world in countless ways, including art. The exhibition invites visitors on a fascinating journey through the world of patterns and repeating motifs, while examining their function and meaning across more than a century of artistic practice. It begins with designs from the Wiener Werkstätte and the early 20th century debate surrounding the role of ornament in modern art. Despite criticism of decoration as something unnecessary or excessive, artists such as Henri Matisse, Édouard Vuillard and Hans Purrmann used richly coloured wallpapers, fabrics and carpets to create interiors full of warmth and optimism. August Macke drew inspiration from ornamental traditions beyond Europe, allowing colour, form and pattern to become the central subject

of their work. The exhibition also explores how ornament influenced the development of abstract art before tracing its continuing impact on contemporary painting and installation art. www.von-der-heydt-museum.de Current exhibitions at Von der Heydt Museum Wuppertal: Beautiful & Strict: The Power of Ornament: 11 October 2026 – 14 February 2027 Also on display: Museum A to Z. VON MONET UND PICASSO BIS ZUR MACHT DES ORNAMENTS Große Kunst ganz nah im Von der Heydt-Museum Wuppertal.

Experience of the Month

Starting in May 2027, the VIVA UNIQUE will sail in the Venetian Lagoon and along the Po River through Emilia-Romagna.

The suites are up to 30 square metres in size.

MOMENTS is the fine-dining restaurant on the boutique ships.

“A VIVA Cruises river cruise combines relaxation with the opportunity to get to know various cities, landscapes and cultures within a short period of time,” says Andrea Kruse, VIVA Cruises CEO and co-founder. “With VIVA Boutique, we’re taking this a step further and bringing the boutique hotel experience to the river.”

At the heart of this premium experience are the boutique ships VIVA BEYOND – sailing the Seine from Paris through Normandy since May 2026 – and VIVA UNIQUE, which starting in May 2027 will blend Italian lifestyle, culture and cuisine in the Venetian Lagoon and along the Po River. "The ship is an integral part of the travel experience," says Kruse. Both boutique ships feature an intimate atmosphere, spacious suites and high-quality interior design. More than 50 per cent of the cabins are suites, and many offer extras such as concierge service or walk-in wardrobes. On both ships, a Michelin-starred chef curates the menus at MOMENTS, while VIVA’s Brasserie on VIVA BEYOND and VIVA’s Trattoria on VIVA UNIQUE serve French and Italian cuisine in a relaxed setting. The VIVA All-Inclusive concept furthermore covers drinks, meals, Wi-Fi, and gratuities. In this way, VIVA Boutique becomes a stylish invitation to discover France and Italy slowly, consciously, and with relish.

When people feel comfortable, they find it easier to come up with new ideas. In addition to the atmosphere, personal attention and the feeling of being welcome also contribute significantly to success.” The stunning rooftop venues on the 11th floor of the Three George in Düsseldorf-Golzheim and on the 29th floor of the UNI-Center in Cologne-Sülz offer breathtaking views of the Rhine and Cologne Cathedral respectively. With inspiring venues and a well-established infrastructure, the Budenfreunde team creates the ideal setting for productive collaboration and important business decisions. “While our guests focus on strategy, innovation or team development, we take care of everything else, from technology through to catering and personalised support. The conference and event venues are deliberately designed to take people away from their work routines and facilitate a constructive change of perspective. The name Sturmfreie Bude comes from a German expression meaning to have a place entirely to yourself and with it the freedom to break with convention, to engage openly with one another, and to create something new together – a philosophy brought to life by the Budenfreunde team. With an eye for detail, the passionate hosts operate using a sustainable, Green Keycertified event concept supported by handselected, top-tier catering and event partners.

The change of scenery allows to consciously step away from everyday life, fostering openness and a genuine shift in perspective: “Many conversations naturally continue on the rooftop terrace or over lunch – and that’s often where the best ideas emerge!”

DIVERSE GUESTS – TAILORED CATERING Loft99 opened in August 2024 and has since hosted numerous events of all kinds. “It’s wonderful for us to see how the space changes every time – depending on who our guests are and the story behind each occasion.” Versatility has been an important part of the vision from the very beginning, because the guests are so diverse – which is exactly what makes Loft99 so exciting, says Schraemli. “We provide support to couples on their wedding day, to families and friends at birthdays and private celebrations, as well as to companies for corporate events, presentations, lectures or concerts – and more.” Whether a small, intimate celebration or a corporate event, the goal is to work closely with the guests to create an unforgettable, tailored event. Loft99 is developed continuously to create space for new ideas, reveals Schraemli. For

The idea for Loft99 grew out of a personal vision to create a special place where people can come together and experience unforgettable moments. “What makes our venue special is, above all, the ability to tailor events to our guests’ individual wishes,” explains Alessandra Schraemli of Alpine Restaurants. “The history of the place also plays an important role. After all, what is now a space for celebrations, meetings and entertainment used to be an auto repair shop!” It is the blend of history, industrial charm and modern event atmosphere that gives Loft99 its special vibe. From the temporary use as a storage facility soon arose the desire to rethink the space as an event venue. "Loft99 is essentially the logical next step in the evolution of our existing catering company,” Schraemli states. “It combines our culinary expertise with a permanent venue where we can organise events holistically and under one roof.”

example, there is the original American school bus that has been lovingly converted into a food truck. It was named Aviöl, which means bee in Romansh – symbolising diligence, movement and community – thus fitting well with the company’s philosophy. At the same time, it is essential that Loft99 retains its personal character: “Our goal is to preserve a place that can constantly reinvent itself and continue to grow with every event.”

STUTTGART: A WEEKEND IN THE CAULDRON Ringed by vineyards and cradled between wooded hills, the city at the heart of the automobile’s birthplace has a green, slow-paced side that surprises visitors expecting little more than factories and motorways. Our writer Wibke Carter goes for a spin.

Friday, on the first day, arrive in the early afternoon, either by direct flight to Stuttgart or by ICE train via Frankfurt, reaching the Hauptbahnhof in a little over 90 minutes. Check into Scandic, a modern glass-fronted hotel in the redeveloped quarter beside the main train station, then take a short U-Bahn ride into the centre for a quick bite at Restaurant knitz, tucked inside Haus des Tourismus on the market square. Start here with a leisurely afternoon walk through the historic centre, taking in the Neues Schloss (New Castle), Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) and lively Schillerplatz, with cafés and shops along the way. Schlossplatz is the city’s living room, filled with skateboarders, students and tourists. For some retail therapy, Königsstrasse is the place to go. Climb the Eugensstaffel, one of the hundreds of outdoor stairways locals use as shortcuts, to Eugensplatz and the Galateabrunnen fountain, where the city, which lies in a Kessel (cauldron), is suddenly at your feet. In warm weather, a scoop from the nearby Pinguin ice-cream parlour is the only sensible way to enjoy the view. from reinforced concrete, and the blueprint for every one that followed. From the viewing platform, 150 metres up, the Neckar valley spreads out in ribbons of vineyards, and on a clear evening the Swabian Alps and the Black Forest edge into view. Head back for dinner at Schellenturm, a 16th century tower built into the old city wall, in the Bohnenviertel – once the artisans' quarter, now a knot of wine bars where the lanes stay lively long after the shutters have come down elsewhere. SATURDAY: WHEELS AND WINE Stuttgart's hop-on, hop-off Citytour runs in open-top red double-deckers, a small wink at the city's Mercedes-Benz pedigree. Take the Blue Tour and watch Schlossplatz and the Schweinemuseum (Pig Museum) slide by, followed by the sprawl of Cannstatter Wasen, the fairground beside the Neckar where the Volksfest takes over from late September to mid-October — second in scale only to Munich's Oktoberfest — before the bus drops you outside the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The company traces itself back to Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, and the museum tells that story backwards: start on the ninth floor among the earliest, most improbable proto-

types, then spiral down through 140 years of engineering until you land back in the present. Switch to the seasonal Weintour (April to October), which winds through the vines to Uhlbach, Stuttgart’s own wine village tucked into the hillside. Lunch at Restaurant Perle sets you up for the Weinbaumuseum, housed in a 1979 former press house, where the story of Stuttgart’s winemakers unfolds before a tasting of regional Rieslings and Trollingers. From Uhlbach, go by bus, or on foot if the wine has not slowed you down, to the Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg, a domed neoclassical chapel on the hill where the Württemberg dynasty's original castle once stood. King Wilhelm I built it in the 1820s to mourn his young second wife, the Russian Grand Duchess Katharina, and one look at the view over the vine-striped valley tells you why he chose this particular hill to grieve on. 62

CULINARY INDULGENCE TO REMEMBER Culinary excellence has been the heart of Hof Weissbad for decades. Head chef Käthi Fässler will celebrate her 30th anniversary at the resort in 2026 and was named Chef of the Year 2026/27 in the renowned Andrin Willi hotel rankings. Her cuisine has held 16 GaultMillau points since 2009.

"For me, good cuisine always starts with the product. When quality, care and teamwork come together, the result is a memorable culinary experience," says Käthi Fässler. Together with her team, she brings Appenzell authenticity, top-quality ingredients and culinary precision to the plate. Close collaboration with regional producers and short supply chains are all integral to the establishment's philosophy. The cuisine takes on a special appeal in autumn, a season that brings robust flavours and warming dishes. Guests can enjoy these offerings in the architecturally striking Flickflauder restaurant, the elegant veranda, or the traditional Schotten-Sepp-Stube. Autumn and the pre-Christmas season reveal a particularly atmospheric side of the Appenzell region. The crisp mountain air invigorates and nature grows quieter, while the resort offers a blend of warm hospitality, exquisite cuisine, and holistic well-being – creating a getaway experience that resonates long after the stay has ended. A 96 per cent guest satisfaction rating on TrustYou testifies to how completely at ease guests feel here. Yet figures tell only part of the story. The rest begins with a personal welcome, extends into the autumnal landscape, and perhaps concludes with a fine dinner or the soothing warmth of the bath and sauna complex.

Massages, spa treatments and restorative therapies help to let go and recharge. APPENZELL HEALTH: NEW ENERGY COMES WITH DISTANCE Those who shoulder heavy responsibilities, make constant decisions, and manage complex tasks in their daily lives often only realise the importance of conscious rest when they step back a little. Just a few days away from one’s familiar surroundings can provide a fresh burst of energy and help refocus on what truly matters. At the resort’s health centre, Appenzell Health combines medical expertise with holistic regeneration. The concept rests on four closely integrated pillars: movement, nutrition, mindfulness, and relaxation. There are no offthe-shelf programmes; instead, physicians, therapists, movement specialists and health coaches work together with each guest to develop a personalised path. The focus can be on stress relief, better sleep, metabolism, vitality, a healthy weight, or sustainable habits. Physical activity in nature strengthens both body and mind. A personalised nutrition plan supports well-being, while meditation, massages and targeted

treatments promote relaxation. Modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods complement the programme as needed. A special feature – unmatched anywhere else in Switzerland – is its certification as the country’s only F.X. Mayr® centre. Here, medical expertise, naturopathic approaches and gourmet cuisine blend seamlessly. Health is not associated with deprivation, but rather with a sense of lightness, the joy of living, and the rewarding feeling of becoming more consciously attuned to oneself. Especially as the year draws to a close, time for oneself becomes particularly precious. At Hof Weissbad, guests can set aside their responsibilities for a few days, enjoy being pampered, and recharge their batteries. Whether staying in the traditional hotel or the modern lodge, a getaway at the foot of the Alpstein mountains provides fresh energy for whatever lies ahead. www.hofweissbad.ch

However, not just its stunning location makes Refuge du Grammont so special, but also its culinary offerings. Everything served here is homemade, crafted from Swiss products, and proudly bearing the Swiss Fait Maison label. Especially after a snowshoe hike or ski tour, the kitchen becomes the heart of the establishment, offering simple, regional and warming fare, accompanied by Swiss wines, homemade specialties and, of course, fondue.

Originally a private home built in 1887, Refuge du Grammont has served as a haven for hikers, ski tourers and nature lovers since the 20th century.

SCHÜLE’S Gesundheitsresort & Spa in Oberstdorf has been pursuing this approach for decades. Owned and managed in the fourth generation by the same family, the health resort is located in a quiet southern location on the edge of the Allgäu Alps. WELLNESS AND SPACE WELLNESS MIT TO BREATHE IN THE FREIRAUM IM BAVARIAN FOREST BAYERISCHEN WALD Over the years, Das Stemp, a small family-run business, has grown into one of the most spacious wellness resorts in the Bavarian Forest, while retaining its defining personal touch.

Das Stemp is, above all, about space: for quiet, nature, good food, space to move, and time for yourself. “We don’t want to grow simply for the sake of getting bigger," says host Corina Stemp. "We want to offer our guests more quality, more space and new experiences.”

This ambition is evident in the new, sustainable OASEE wellness area, which adds further places of retreat as well as new experiences. These include a lakeside event sauna for up to 90 guests, snow room, fire lounge and swing forest. The 60-metre-long Stemp Lake and infinity pool also contribute to the spacious setting. Sauna sessions and specially staged infusions play a particularly important role. Food is a vital part of the philosophy: regional produce, modern cuisine and a well-curated wine list all contribute to the overall experience. Equally important are the host family and staff, whose warm hospitably gives the resort its particular personal touch. With sauna events, retreats, yoga sessions and special events, Das Stemp continues to create new opportunities to relax while the underlying idea remains the same: wellness should create space, not confine it. www.das-stemp.de

October 2026

FANCY A PINEAPPLE? A pineapple might seem an unusual emblem for a castle in Lower Saxony, but at Schloss Schwöbber it has represented hospitality for more than 300 years. Back in the 17th century, the exotic fruit was cultivated in the estate’s orangeries, where pineapples were prized as symbols of wealth, openness and hospitality. Surrounded by the rolling countryside of the Weserbergland Nature Park and just a short drive from the famous Pied Piper town of Hamelin, the magnificent Weser Renaissance castle dates back to 1570. Following a fire, Schloss Schwöbber stood empty for many years before being restored in the early 2000s. Since reopening as a five-star superior hotel in 2004, it has combined the elegance of a historic residence with the comfort of contemporary luxury across its 67 individually designed rooms and suites. The eight-hectare castle park is reserved exclusively for hotel guests and is considered 78

one of the earliest English landscape gardens in mainland Europe. Ancient trees, tranquil lakes and sweeping lawns invite leisurely strolls, while the Pineapple Pavilion provides a fascinating link to the estate’s past. Beyond the grounds, two neighbouring 18-hole golf courses, scenic walking trails and cycling routes make it easy to explore the surrounding countryside. Back at the hotel, the light-filled 800-square-metre Münchhausen Spa offers a welcome chance to slow down. Guests can enjoy an 18-metre indoor pool, Finnish sauna, Sanarium with Liftlight therapy, steam baths, the Salina Lounge with MICROSALT, InfraPLUSSeats, experience showers, an ice fountain, peaceful relaxation rooms and an outdoor terrace. Dining is every bit as memorable. At the Schlosskeller Restaurant, complete with its lakeside terrace, head chef Anna Köpke showcases creative cuisine inspired by regional

flavours. For a more refined evening, 1570 – Casual Fine Dining, led by Thor Formell Monforte, serves contemporary French cuisine with international influences. Afterwards, the elegant SCHWÖBBAR is the perfect place for a nightcap while overlooking the historic park. Whether looking for a relaxing spa break, a gourmet getaway or simply a chance to immerse yourself in centuries of history, Schlosshotel Münchhausen brings together heritage, nature and understated luxury in a setting unlike any other. www.schlosshotel-muenchhausen.com Photo: Filipp Romanovski

WHERE EVERY ARRIVAL BEGINS BY THE WATER Just half an hour from Frankfurt lies a place where the everyday fades into the background: Seehotel Niedernberg. "Seehotel Niedernberg is not a conventional hotel. It’s a small village by the lake where people can arrive, take a deep breath, and leave everyday life behind for a while," says general manager Violeta Pantic. That is precisely the property’s strength: it does not sell a quick change of scenery, but a sense of belonging.

on appointment calendars, the gaze rests on lakeshores, sandy beaches, an island, and the tranquil expanse of the Churfranken region. For weekend visitors from the city, the resort is close enough for a spontaneous getaway, yet far enough away to feel like a true vacation.

Sometimes, relaxation begins not with a spa appointment, but with a change of scenery that feels right from the very first moment. At Seehotel Niedernberg – often referred to as the ‘Village by the Lake’ – that feeling of well-being frequently sets in the moment you arrive. Paths wind between individual buildings, open spaces reveal views of the lake, and windows reflect the light dancing on the water. Instead of the anonymity typical of hotel lobbies, guests are welcomed by a harmonious blend of architecture, nature and social interaction; a setting deliberately designed to feel like a small village.

check into a room, but become part of an atmosphere that blends personal connection, quality and a sense of ease. "Guests arrive for the first time as guests but leave as members of the village family," says Pantic, explaining the establishment's philosophy. While this might sound like marketing poetry, it becomes tangible on-site through numerous details: a warm welcome, spaces designed for retreat, and inviting architecture.

forests and vineyards change colour, mist settles over the water, and the first lights begin to glow along the shore, the resort transforms into a sanctuary for the senses. Strolls around the lake, excursions to Miltenberg or Aschaffenburg, and hikes through the Churfranken region combine with the comforts of a hotel that takes the art of slowing down seriously. At the heart of this experience lies the new Miranu Spa. Featuring saunas, a heated outdoor pool, an indoor pool, a whirlpool, treatments, and spacious relaxation areas, it is a space that treats water as an integral part of the wellness philosophy. A new Espuro® foam steam bath and an infrared cabin further enrich the wellness offerings, while large windows, natural materials, and the proximity to the island create a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. "For us, Miranu signifies balance, serenity and renewed energy. We wanted to create a place where people can reconnect with themselves," says Pantic. Special rituals include hourly natural infusions featuring rotating scents and high-quality essences. Those who prefer a more intense experience can combine their sauna session with a dip in the lake – even during the cooler months. The hotel’s private island, complete with a sandy beach, remains a luxury yearround: a spot for sunbathing and swimming in summer, a quiet vantage point in autumn,

and a place for brave ice swimmers and clear thinking in winter. REGIONAL INDULGENCE In culinary terms, too, the lakeside village sees itself less as a hotel and more as a space for experiences. Breakfast with a view of the lake, regional specialties, seasonal creations and terraces right by the water make fine dining an integral part of the stay. At the ELIES restaurant, regional products are given a modern twist; the day begins in the lightfilled Orangerie; and at the bar and café, an aperitif turns into a moment to linger. It is this blend of nature, cuisine and personal hospitality that sets Seehotel Niedernberg

apart from many other wellness destinations. "We want to create memories, not just provide overnight stays. Our goal is for guests to leave with a smile and look forward to returning," says Pantic, describing the hotel's philosophy. Precisely because the property brings together so many elements – island, lake, spa, fine dining, the Churfranken region, events, and a village family spirit – every guest’s stay becomes an exclusive, personalised experience. During Advent, the resort transforms into a winter village. In summer, it becomes a lakeside retreat with a beach-like atmosphere, and in autumn, a golden sanctuary. Yet the essence remains the same: a place where luxury need not be loud. Perhaps this statement by Pantic sums up that attitude best: "We don’t just accommodate our guests; we look after them. That may be why they keep coming back. Together with our island, the lake, the distinctive architecture, and – above all – our wonderful staff, something truly indescribable emerges. For many, it is simply their third place. Not home, not work, but their favourite place." www.seehotel-niedernberg.de

GXUND BAD HOFGASTEIN: WHERE WELLNESS AND PLEASURE MEET PREVENTATIVE HEALTHCARE

At 3-star hotel GXUND, health, above all, means two things: freedom and individuality. Rather than following a set programme, spa and health guests can tailor their stay to their own needs, whether looking for a short break at the thermal spa or a longer stay focused on their health, with treatments focusing on the musculoskeletal system, such as back pain, joint problems or chronic inflammation.

“Not everyone needs the same things to feel gxund. That is the reason why our guests decide for themselves what is beneficial for them. Being able to do as much as they like, without having to do anything, that is our understanding of relaxation,” says the director.

Those wishing to combine their time away with prevention or regeneration will find perfect conditions at GXUND. Few places offer a similar seamless transition between activity, wellness and targeted preventative healthcare as GXUND. The mountains begin practically on the resort’s doorstep, while the Alpentherme and the adjoining health centre are just a few steps – or, to be more precise, just a heated bathrobe corridor – away. The GXUND’s individual approach extends to its accommodation, with a choice between hotel room, suite or apartment. Health and wellness combined with a sense of lightness and humour: that is the idea behind GXUND, an active and health resort in Bad Hofgastein.

Deshalb entscheiden unsere Gäste selbst, was ihnen guttut.

They are being built by people who refuse to be discouraged by it. A GOALGIRLS* column about women building businesses differently. Sometimes the next generation does not need to start something new. Sometimes they look at what generations of women before them have built and ask: What could this become next? For GOALGIRLS* founder Helena Rothe, leaving the creative industry meant choosing a surprising new chapter: joining her mother Ute at BADEN COLLECTION – and taking the family business into its fourth generation. And something seems to be working. Together, mother and daughter are giving BADEN COLLECTION a very literal second spring and see it flourish in the company’s success. MEET THE MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO DOING SUCCESSION DIFFERENTLY BADEN COLLECTION is a family-run B2B partner for interior, home decoration and gifts. Ute knows the business inside out: sales, organisation, customers and people. Helena brings something new: brand, digital marketing, social media and her own taste. She is bringing the collection online, introducing pieces that speak to a younger aesthetic and open BADEN COLLECTION to an entirely new audience. Not old school versus new school. Legacy, upgraded.

Ute and Helena.

WHAT IF SUCCESSION WAS NOT ABOUT REPLACEMENT? Kaddie: “If your business was a movement – what would it destroy?” Helena: "The idea that taking over means either preserving everything or changing everything." Ute: "You need to know what is worth keeping – and be brave enough to change the rest." Helena teaches Ute about online business, content and a new generation of customers. Ute teaches Helena sales, organisation and people management. Succession becomes an exchange, not a replacement.

OUR POWER IS THE GENERATION GAP

DELETE THIS NARRATIVE

Kaddie: “Where does your power come from?” Ute: "I know this company. I know our customers, our people and our business. After all these years, I don't need to make every decision complicated. Sometimes you just know what works." Helena: "And I question exactly that. Sorry, Mum. My power is looking at something that has worked for 20 years and still asking: Could it work even better? Could it look different? Could we tell the story differently?" Ute: "And annoyingly, sometimes she's right."

Kaddie: “Which assumption about women in business should be deleted?” Helena: "That joining your family business means going backwards. I'm using everything I learned creatively to take something with history somewhere new." WHEN POWER SHIFTS GENERATIONS Kaddie: “What would be different if more women led companies?” Ute:"Women don't all lead the same way. Helena and I certainly don't." Helena: "Exactly. Female leadership doesn't

need another stereotype. It needs more versions of itself." BADEN COLLECTION's most successful year did not happen because Helena came in and changed everything. And it did not happen because Ute refused to. It happened somewhere in between. Experience met curiosity. Legacy met new energy. Mother met daughter. And instead of passing a company from one generation to the next, they are leading it together. GOALGIRLS* is an international FLINTA* creative collective and agency. Keep calm and have a coffee: Berlin’s accommodating gastronomy I can’t praise Berlin’s café and restaurant culture enough. Despite the pandemic crisis and the maintenance and delivery costs still rising due to the various political conflicts nobody can ignore anymore, one thing in Berlin has remained the same: you will always find an affordable cup of coffee and – if hungry – an enticing meal at various price levels. I will present two quite opposing examples, which both have long become Berlin institutions. TEXT: CORNELIA BRELOWSKI

There are old soldiers of classic Berlin gastronomy who have survived all the turmoil and have been here even since before the wall came down. One of them is Pasternak, situated in Prenzlauer Berg’s Knaakstraße right at the Wasserturm square, where the menu includes both Ukrainian and Russian dishes as well as Georgian wine and a pianist in the evenings. Patti Smith likes to stop by Pasternak during her Berlin visits (she has her own designated table, which allows an overlook of both bar and restaurant). Anyone who is familiar with her books knows that she has a very good instinct about where to get the best coffee while travelling. But here, you can also enjoy Eastern European cuisine at a price of 65 euros per person for a 4-course group menu, including water – still or sparkling as you please. Pasternak, though having become quite chic, still retains its oldworld charm and, soothingly, also combines two cultures that find themselves in political conflict again and again; reminding us that culture and politics often have very little to

in Berlin cafés – there will be a glass, tin or box put out by the cashier to this end – my daily café has a pirate-style treasure box to drop your coins in. Please mind that in Berlin, tips are often not included in the salary – so even if you pick up your drinks and food at the counter, make sure to leave a little pourboire for the staff.

do with each other. Pasternak of course was named after the author of the classic Russian novel Doctor Zhivago. Speaking of old worlds. In former West Berlin, you still have the chance of a post-clubbing coffee and breakfast (and cigarette) in the middle of the night at the iconic Schwarzes Café in Kantstraße, ever since – read and believe it – 1978. “What’s normal, doesn’t interest us,” the website states. Colourful and diverse, spontaneous, chaotic, open-minded, and full of love, Schwarzes Café rocks on. Breakfast is served all night from 6 euros upwards – cash only, please. Speaking of which, in Berlin it actually makes sense to always have some cash in your pocket. Many places in both the former East and West prefer cash payment, especially if you’re only having coffee. The reason is that the Berlin gastronomy scene is struggling with high rent and maintenance costs, and every single card-based transaction costs the host a fee. Tips are often paid in cash

German Curiosities Column

The German joy of wandering And just like that, it’s autumn. Who would have thought, after this long and very hot summer. I like autumn, the changing colours, the way the sky looks at sunset. There’s still a certain glow to it. Just without the heat. It’s the perfect season to go for a walk. Or Spaziergang, as we call it in German. That’s not a hike, or a run, or necessarily a walk to get somewhere. Spaziergang carries a particular German sentiment of going for a walk as an activity in itself. The German Spaziergang is less about getting from A to B and more about simply being out and about. You might walk through a park, around the neighbourhood or along a forest path. There doesn’t have to be a particular destination and there’s no need to cover a certain number of miles. You are just… walking. It’s a perfectly sensible use of an afternoon: “Ich gehe spazieren” – “I’m going for a walk” is a complete plan. No further explanation required. As an in-between season, autumn is particularly well suited. Not too hot, not too cold, and a little rain is not an issue. When Germans go for a Spaziergang in autumn, you can trust them to be well suited and booted. Out comes the beloved Allwetter-

A walk that embodies this concept perfectly is the Philosophenweg, or Philosophers’ Way, a famous path above Heidelberg, which offers sweeping views of the old town and castle on the other side of the Neckar River. Its name goes back to the late Romantic period when Heidelberg’s university professors and philosophers liked to stroll along the hillside overlooking the Neckar, discussing ideas and contemplating life. The name nicely captures the Spaziergang spirit of just walking, talking, thinking and enjoying the views, without any further agenda. Should you make it to

Heidelberg’s Philosophers’ Way this autumn, I can only recommend it – and, handily, there are also some nice cafés for coffee and cake nearby.

A German Spaziergang can also be very sociable. Families go for walks after Sunday lunch. Couples walk and talk. Friends meet for a stroll. And if it ends in a nice café for a Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) break, all the better. Apart from that no particular purpose or ambition needs to be involved. No step count to conquer, no destination to reach. Just enjoy the walk and let the mind wander. Walking gives you time to chat, think and simply enjoy being outside, without having to achieve anything.
