ELECTRIC AND VERSATILE: THE NEW ELECTRIC SMART MODELS COMBINE DESIGN, SAFETY AND CONNECTIVITY

With representation in 17 markets, smart has firmly established itself as a purely electric car brand in Europe. After three new SUVs and compact models in the last three years, the car manufacturer is now returning to its roots: the iconic smart twoseater in a new garb is the perfect electric companion for city dwellers.

smart was the first car manufacturer to fully switch to electric mobility in 2019. Each model has its own distinct character, yet remains true to the brand's core: award-winning design, a 5-star safety rating and regular Over-the-Air updates (OTA) for perfect connectivity, as well as a voice assistant and high-performance infotainment systems, are core components of every smart vehicle.

The compact smart #1 has been on European roads as a true all-rounder since 2022. With a 66-kWh battery, it offers a range of up to 440 kilometres under optimal conditions, providing high flexibility even on longer journeys. The smart #3 coupé is the sporty variant with a range of up to 455 kilometres and acceleration from 0–100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. The premium mid-size SUV smart #5, offers maximum flexibility, even on longer trips. It has a 100-kWh battery and 800-volt

platform, and spacious cargo compartments that make it perfect for families.

THE TWO-SEATER RETURNS

– PROVEN QUALITIES WITH A NEW VISION

Thinking about smart cars brings back memories of the iconic two-seater called fortwo, which attracted huge attention in city centres from the late 1990s. The first electric smart was launched in 2007. Since then, the technology has evolved significantly, and smart has established itself as a pioneer on the European market.

In 2026, smart will return to its roots with the world premiere of the new smart #2 two-seater – albeit with new technology and advanced design combined with the core qualities of the original smart fortwo, for example compact exterior dimensions and the ‘wheels-at-the-corner’ setup for maximum

space utilisation. smart #2 is not about nostalgia, but the requirements of drivers, especially in European city centres where parking space is often limited but mobility is a must. The reinterpretation of the two-seater is the logical answer to automotive needs in urban areas.

With this broad product range, smart covers all modern mobility requirements – from spacious SUVs to agile city cars.

The upcoming smart #2 is ideal for tight city spaces.
The smart product range has won several international design awards.

LADINA BUNDI: SWISS COUTURE WITH A CLEAN STYLE

Swiss designer Ladina Bundi is known for fashion defined by clean lines, premium materials and exceptional craftsmanship.

Ladina’s collections are created in her atelier in Chur, where the exclusive designs are also available for purchase. “My designs are deliberately reduced to the essentials,” says the designer. “I focus on the details, and my clients appreciate the quality and timeless style of my pieces.”

Ladina finds inspiration almost everywhere: while travelling, in architecture, art and music. “The impulse comes from the outside and triggers a creative process within me,” she explains, describing her creative approach. In her current collection, she places particular emphasis on silk and linen; fabrics that lend her designs a flattering lightness and timeless elegance.

With her couture, Ladina pursues one main ambition: “I want my clients to feel confident, special and completely at ease,” stresses the designer, whose creations are aimed at women of all ages who value authentic design and durable fashion.

The success story of her label is soon entering its next chapter: from June 2026, Ladina Bundi will present her collection for four months in the store Flying Solo in New York’s SoHo district.

DIE KERAMIKERINNEN: EACH PIECE HAND-SHAPED, EACH GLAZE DEVELOPED IN-HOUSE

die Keramikerinnen offers handcrafted ceramics, individually glazed and designed using traditional methods. The pieces are characterised by functionality and timeless aesthetics, combining classic craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and sustainable materials.

“Whether a delicate bowl or an artistic plate – in our pottery workshop, we create regional, timeless ceramic one-of-a-kind pieces and exclusive small series that bring lasting joy in everyday life,” says ceramicist Barbara Lienhard, who, together with Jolanda Sigg, has been running a pottery workshop in Switzerland’s Oberglatt since 2023. “We develop our high-quality glazes ourselves. We work meticulously and handle the materials that we use sustainably.”

Collaborative creation is at the heart of Barbara Lienhard and Jolanda Sigg's work. "As a team, we inspire, challenge, and support each other, constantly developing our skills," adds Jolanda Sigg. For Lienhard and Sigg, creating with their hands is a privilege. They work with stoneware clay and porcelain, delicate materials that can be shaped and altered until firing. The team also uses natural raw materials for their glazes.

Many steps are required to create a ceramic piece. The raw material is prepared and thrown on the potter's wheel. After trimming,

the piece is left to dry slowly before its first firing, the bisque firing. The surface is then sanded and glazed by hand. In the second firing, the glaze firing, the clay and glaze fuse permanently. This is followed by further sanding and quality control. "Ceramics take time," says Lienhard. "That's precisely where their special value lies."

The result is ceramics for people who appreciate the unique and enduring. According to Sigg, the craftsmanship is evident in the products from the three collections: ‘die Zarten’, ‘die Edlen’ and ‘die Erdigen’. "This is precisely what distinguishes our ceramics from industrially produced goods. Our individual pieces come together to form a harmonious whole that impresses with its quality and aesthetics." Each collection showcases a distinct aesthetic: ‘die Zarten’ represents simple, timeless porcelain; ‘die Edlen’ features saltglazed, wood-fired surfaces; and ‘die Erdigen’ showcases robust stoneware with visible throwing marks. Bowls, cups, lamps, carafes, and decorative roses are crafted – each one individually and with meticulous care.

Whether commissioned works, individual pieces or series, whether for private individuals, retailers or catering businesses – die Keramikerinnen create ceramics for everyday life that are sure to bring joy for many years to come.

KIOTO: MINIMALISM MEETS CRAFTSMANSHIP

For those who love shoes that are both timeless and handcrafted, KIOTO is an exceptional brand that combines minimalist design with honest craftsmanship. Produced in small Portuguese workshops, its collections do not follow fleeting fashion trends, but instead impress with quality and comfort.

oxford shoe, or the JAHEL mule. "Even the COCO slip on, in its simplicity, is a true KIOTO," adds Opitz. Another special feature is that most models are available in sizes 35 to 44.

The KIOTO story begins with designer Claudia Opitz, who after two decades working for various brands wanted to forge a new path and break free from the hamster wheel of fashion cycles. This led to the founding of KIOTO in 2017. "Since then, KIOTO has been my own creative testing ground," says Opitz. "A place where I can recharge my batteries and design without compromise."

Since its founding, KIOTO has stood for minimalist, purist shoe designs that consciously reject fleeting trends. "A shoe must first and foremost be comfortable and suitable for everyday wear. I'm convinced that with a good shoe, you're already half dressed; a bad shoe, on the other hand, can ruin the most beautiful outfit." In addition to timeless aesthetics, the founder places great emphasis on high-quality materials: calfskin lining for a pleasant foot climate, a removable insole in

all models, and flexible Strobel construction ensure everyday comfort.

The name KIOTO is an homage to Japanese design principles, which stand for straightforwardness, simplicity, and reduction to the essentials. "When an object is designed in this quiet way, it remains beautiful and functional over time. For me, that’s the most honest form of sustainability."

The striking black and white contrasts of the models are particularly noteworthy, such as the JOVA ankle boot, the ASTA desert bootie

KIOTO remains a true one-woman business – driven by heart, passion, and a clear maxim. "Passion first, economic success second," Opitz says. "I don't necessarily have a new collection every season. Since the designs are timeless, I only produce a new collection when there's space in the warehouse again."

KIOTO, thus, creates shoes that last and inspire. For women who value style, a slower pace of life, and substance.

KIOTO: MINIMALISMUS TRIFFT HANDWERKSKUNST

INTENSIFY ME BOUTIQUE: LINGERIE, REIMAGINED

In Basel, an exceptional lingerie experience is redefining the way women connect with their bodies. INTENSIFY ME Boutique is not simply a retail space, but an invitation to pause and rediscover a confident sense of femininity.

Opened in 2024, the boutique builds on the philosophy of the Brazilian label INTENSIFY ME, founded by Priscila Gomide.

Behind the boutique is Carina Baldi, who transitioned from a nearly two-decade career in healthcare science to follow a more personal vision. Her journey into lingerie was not driven by fashion or business ambition alone, but by her own transformation, one that now brings a deeply human perspective to the boutique. “INTENSIFY ME came into my life during a time of change,” Carina reflects. “What stayed with me was the experience it created.”

Said change was motherhood and a sabbatical in Brazil, where she reconnected with her roots and herself. After years of breastfeeding, lingerie had become purely functional. Yet through INTENSIFY ME, she encountered something entirely different: pieces that felt light, comfortable and sensual. “I felt more feminine, more connected to myself,” she

recalls. “The lingerie created a subtle shift in how I experienced my body, not only through motherhood, but through sensuality and my rediscovered womanhood.”

From the boutique’s signature latte to the Collaboration Corner, where women-led brands showcase their artistry, every detail reflects this philosophy. Calm and intimate, the space feels more like a haven than a shop. Clients are encouraged to explore without pressure and engage with lingerie in a way that feels

personal rather than transactional, always respecting each woman’s individual way of experiencing these personal moments.

At the core of INTENSIFY ME is Middlewear® , lingerie designed to move beyond the boundaries of underwear. Light materials, sheer layers and soft designs follow the body rather than reshape it, thus becoming part of a woman’s style: sometimes visible, sometimes just a mere suggestion.

Produced in small quantities by skilled seamstresses, each piece exudes extraordinary craftsmanship and sensitivity, concepts that lie at the heart of INTENSIFY ME Boutique. “You immediately recognise our pieces,” stresses Carina. “They don’t impose a form; they reveal how a woman already feels. That’s where confidence begins.”

Ultimately, INTENSIFY ME Boutique respects the female body rather than reshapes it, cre-

ating pieces designed to be lived in and integrated naturally into everyday life.

INTENSIFY ME BOUTIQUE: DESSOUS NEU GEDACHT

„Man erkennt unsere Designs leicht”, betont Carina.

Whether the firm works for clients such as SICK AG in Waldkirch or Arthrex, the first step always revolves around the same core question: what kind of environment do people need to perform at their best? “You can’t answer that at the drawing board,” the architect asserts. “It emerges through intensive dialogue with the clients and the users on-site.”

“We work with companies that are growing or reinventing themselves – or view a new location as a statement.”

OCHS SCHMIDHUBER Architects has over 25 years of experience. “It was founded on the conviction that architecture can do more than just create buildings – it can make attitudes visible,” Florian Schmidhuber sums up. “What shaped us early on was working with companies that are themselves undergoing transformation – firms that are growing, re-

inventing themselves, or viewing a new location as a statement.” From the very beginning, sustainability was not just an add-on for the firm, but an integral part of the design process – because forward-thinking companies need forward-thinking buildings.

The client base typically consists of companies that take architecture seriously. “Our clients understand that a building communicates who you are to the outside world –and influences how you work on the inside,” explains Ochs. This approach also applied to

the SICK Campus project in Waldkirch; a globally active technology company that views its headquarters as a hub of identity and innovation. The collaboration worked in a similar way with Arthrex and on the new building at Hansastraße 29 in Munich – a project that demonstrates how contemporary corporate architecture and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. As Schmidhuber states: “Our clients aren’t looking for architects, they’re looking for partners.”

“Transformation isn’t just a buzzword; it’s the true architectural challenge of our time.”

This year, the architects will be working on further large-scale projects that demonstrate the direction in which corporate architecture is heading – away from imposing, stand-alone structures and toward interconnected, sustainable buildings that are capable of adapting. “Transformation isn’t just a buzzword; it’s the true architectural challenge of our time,” concludes Ochs. “We’ll have quite a bit to show for it in 2026!”

QUERKOPF ARCHITEKTEN: HOLISTIC VISIONS AND NEW PERSPECTIVES

Hamburg-based Querkopf Architekten thinks out of the box, ensuring that its architecture closely reflects its visions and holistic attitude.

TEXT: CORNELIA BRELOWSKI I PHOTOS: QUERKOPF ARCHITEKTEN

“Our architecture arises from a desire to first question the tasks at hand,” explains Querkopf founder Fionn Mögel. “Querkopf (Maverick) is less of a label and more of an attitude. We consider things from various perspectives and in various roles – to make sure that the resulting structures stay close to our visions.”

Querkopf Architekten embraces a holistic approach to development, planning, and construction. Apart from heading the architectural studio, Mögel is also the managing director of a construction company with over 30 employees and acts as a project developer for his own projects. “We’re not only architects. We still embrace a holistic approach to de-

velopment, planning, and construction.” The architect started out even before leaving college. “Actually, I started working while I was still sort of in the middle of my master’s programme,” he recalls. While experience may have lacked at first, the necessary passion was there in abundance. “My former partner and I didn't know much at first, but we worked hard and were full of love for what we did. We made up for our lack of experience by putting in a hell of a lot of hours!” The goal was to build a broad portfolio over the first decade, essentially covering every genre, the architect

says. “We managed to work together for ten years, after which I took over on my own. Well, not entirely on my own – the team is amazing,” he marvels.

ARCHITECTURE THAT STIRS EMOTIONS

Querkopf Architekten works for clients that are looking for visionaries whose buildings can stir emotions. “We want to create butterflies in the stomach!” The team worked hard over the past 15 years – mostly without any marketing, reveals the architect: “We’ve always let our work speak, and now it’s time

for growth. We mean to go international in the near future. We want to blur the lines between genres, break with convention, and offer new perspectives worldwide.” To this end, they will soon be enlarging their team, focus on certain sectors and set priorities – especially on high-end villas, hotel developments and new living concepts.

WÄSCHEREIQUARTIER – MODERN LIVING IN HISTORIC SURROUNDINGS

A recent, award-winning project in Kassel offers a successful blend of past and present. The Vorderer Westen neighbourhood in Kassel’s western outskirts combines historic buildings with modern structures and offers a new residential experience. Known for its

well-preserved Art Nouveau buildings, the borough also offers a lively café and restaurant scene. In an idyllic courtyard not far from Bebelplatz square lies an industrial laundry building from 1900, surrounded by old fruit trees and wildflowers. Here, 30 residential units were created, ranging between 35 and 320 square metres of floor space.

A new building on Dörnbergstraße forms the entrance to the Wäschereiquartier: Corten steel façades and exposed concrete interiors define the character of the units while drawing conceptual inspiration from the old industrial charm of the complex. The addition to the red brick factory building meanwhile incorporates historical elements such

as exposed steel beams and vertical bands of windows. The historic chimney acts as a particular eye-catcher while a rooftop terrace in the courtyard offers views of green roof plantings, inviting residents to relax. The project combines old industrial charm with modern living comfort, creating a new and innovative residential complex.

VILLA FERRO – LUXURIOUS FAMILY ESTATE WITH DISTINCT IDENTITY

Located in a quiet residential neighbourhood near Bremen, the villa embodies a harmonious blend of contemporary architecture, spacious interiors and a deep connection to nature. Spanning 720 square metres of living space on a 4,600-square-metre lot, it was designed as a luxurious family estate with a distinct architectural identity. Clean horizontal roof lines punctuated by vertical walls of natural stone lend the building both strength and a timeless character. The entrance area features a pivoting wooden door that appears to float between glass elements, creating a grand yet inviting first impression. Generous, frameless glass surfaces open towards the garden, allowing interior and exterior to merge seamlessly.

The interior design concept features bright and spacious areas: an open kitchen, a 90 square metre master suite, children’s rooms, a wellness area with a spa and fitness room, and a private cinema. Double-height ceilings and clear lines emphasise the sense of spaciousness and elegance, mirrored by an exterior with equally generous terrace areas and a pool.

VILLA NEO – SCULPTURAL ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE

Nestled in the middle of a 2,300-square-metre wooded plot near Hamburg stands a villa that breaks with traditional conventions and blazes new trails with its sculptural architecture. The villa has 403 square metres of floor space and was a direct commission. It embodies the vision of sculptural, minimalist, and modern architecture that reinterprets classical principles and offers a unique living experience surrounded by nature.

The villa resembles an artistic installation rather than a building, set on a natural stone pedestal that forms the underground garage. The two-story structure is clearly oriented toward the forest and follows the design concept of an L-shape that nestles against the slope, creating a sheltered interior space for the terrace. From the street side, the ground floor presents a minimalist appearance with three striking forms of exposed concrete, protecting the interior from view. Toward the forest however, the rooms open up through large-scale glass elements, creating an intense connection to the surroundings. The upper floor forms a design contrast with an

imposing, twisted concrete structure above a transparent glass-and-steel construction – ensuring privacy and directing the view toward the forest. Steel slats wrap around the building and harmoniously connect the levels, while an atrium in the centre of the house provides additional natural light.

PARKTOWER OFFENBACH

LIVING THE FUTURE

–

The ParkTower ensemble symbolises the connection between nature and forward-thinking urban development. Located directly on Büsingpark and adjacent to the Büsing Palais, the ParkTower offers an impressive view of the river to the north and a spectacular view of the Frankfurt skyline to the west.

A key objective of the project was to break through the barrier created by the major thoroughfare and establish a connection between the city centre and the riverfront, thereby enabling seamless integration into the urban landscape. The architecture is inspired by the natural form of the horsetail plant, with the different stems representing various functions. The lower section contains student housing units, followed by a hotel area above and residential apartments for the upper section. The base level provides space for public uses and revitalises the neighbourhood with a comprehensive cultural and recreational area. The second standalone building houses office space. Green terraces not only create an oasis in the midst of the urban environment but also improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The ParkTower thus stands not only for architectural innova-

tion, but also for a sustainable and liveable future in urban development.

HANSE MERKUR-LOBBY

– BLENDING HISTORICAL HERITAGE WITH MODERN ARCHITECTURE

The new lobby for the Hanse Merkur-building at Hamburg’s Siegfried Wedells square combines modern architectural elements with functional features – a sculptural design

created to meet both aesthetic and practical needs. The entrance hall connects the architectural ensemble, comprising the historic Wedells building, a 1990s structure and the atrium situated between them. The lobby flows into the urban space as an expressive extension of the glass atrium, opening up with a widely cantilevered roof that appears on the forecourt like a sculpture.

CLUB DESIGN – LIGHTING THE NIGHT

Across two floors, situated high above the rooftops of the Reeperbahn at Nobistor, the Hamburg Noho Club draws the crowds with stylish decor, a high-quality sound system, and first-class lighting: 2,000 individually controllable LEDs flash across the room while 100 black mirrors refract the light in all directions like a sparkling diamond. The sophisticated GAGA Club concept meanwhile seamlessly blends a restaurant and a nightclub. The tactile materials and coordinated colours in the restaurant area contrast with the acoustic dynamics and the play of light in the nightclub: a high-end design concept, enabling versatile use.

THE POWER OF FEARLESSNESS AND CREATIVE FREEDOM

German singer Lotte is relishing in a new life chapter as she prepares for the release of her fourth album, called Lotte, in August and her solo tour across the DACH region in autumn.

It has been 1.5 years of preparation with her new producer Jules Apollinaire, preceded by years of travel which Lotte mainly used for kindling her creative inner child into a new freedom in both expression and sound. Already, the three pre-released singles reveal how the 30-year-old musician transports the theme of artistic self-confidence with a mix of introspection and pathos – reminding at times of mature and equally independent songwriters such as Cat Powers.

We were wondering what initiated her career and still keeps her going. “My inspiration has always been to find a safe place for my emotions. As a highly sensitive person, I feel deeply and these sentiments need an inner outlet within a secure space – which for me happens to be music and songwriting. I started my first instrument age four and wrote my first songs at 13. Music to me has always been the island where I can dock my boat and be myself. So among all the emotions there’s always also a sense of peace in what I do.”

Maybe this craving for peace and freedom has also led her to contact French producer Jules Apollinaire, who is based in London – the last of her travel destinations during years of soul-searching after the last album?

“I think it works this way: once you know who you are and where you want to go, you attract the right people to help you do so. I randomly contacted Jules on social media with some new ideas and he said: ‘I’m glad

you found me!’ I mean, friends told me that he was out of my league as he’s already worked with such big names, but he actually works in a very inspiring, relaxed way –

almost like a kind of hippie producer, if you will. I lived and worked at his studio in East London, which has bedrooms attached, and we would be creating and jamming into the night and sleeping during the day. And we made sure to find the right people all over the world for the album between London, Paris and even LA. Jules, in fact, doesn’t even speak German. This is a completely international production.”

What makes the new sound? And how does it differ from earlier albums, the last one released in 2022? “Oh, the new sound is completely different from anything I’ve done before. I love and believe in constant development and am always trying to push myself to keep searching

and growing. However, for the first time since travelling through the universe of music, this sound really feels like having discovered a planet that I don’t want to leave any more. I love and adore the old school, analogue recording techniques and the general style of

the music of the 60s and 70s. Right now, I’m experimenting with a lot of reverb and giving songwriting no boundaries.”

So creative freedom and space for yourself are, thus, not only mirrored in the lyrics but

also in the sound – reflecting growth, freedom and nuances all at the same time? “Yes, it’s more three-dimensional and covers all the hues between light and dark. At the same time, we’ve tried to give the album a more timeless quality – something that I think is so important

in a time of quick fixes and an overall focus on making money – which often doesn’t even exist these days. That’s also why Jules and I make a good team. With him, it’s all about the art – I can’t tell you how refreshing that is. In a way, I now go by Pippi Longstocking’s motto: ‘I build my world the way I like it.’ That time in London has really been groundbreaking for

me in a way that I’ve been living and working exactly the way I want to.”

Speaking of boundless adventures and imagination. In the pre-released single Jenny, you are referring to a girl you can see at night through your window, always dancing and altogether daring in attitude and appearance

– which in turn makes you feel less anxious. Is this a fictional character or kind of an alter ego for you? “Jenny is based on an actual friend who’s always living extremes. Very inspirational and adventurous, so fearless that if anything, sometimes you’re worrying for her safety! She reflects that kind of freedom I was searching for after my last album, so I was inspired to write a song about her.”

As for inspiration and friends – what was it like to tour with CLUESO again just now? “Amazing! Apart from being reunited with an old friend, it gave me the chance to play hitherto unreleased songs in front of huge crowds – quite a moment of revealing your soul after years of introspection. It was magical. And it was of course great to be close to my friend, who has often encouraged me to keep on finding as well as sticking to my own path. He’s quite the searcher himself and though he never keeps still, he’s also a very grounded person – a quality hard to find with people who are that popular!”

This brings us to your upcoming solo tour in September, right after your album release –are you excited? “Absolutely! Given that I’ve lived pretty much in a cave for the time of producing the album, it will be great to be out there with the band. Which by the way consists of the most talented musicians I can wish for. And my music is meant to be heard live, so it will be a most gratifying experience. We’ll be touring Germany, Austria and Switzerland for a total of 2.5 weeks.”

And after that? What would you say are your current aspirations for the future, and also –what would make a day perfect for you right now? “Well, there’s of course that stepping stone of being 30. Which involves thoughts about arriving and settling at some point – I always wanted to be a mum one day. But for now, honestly all I want is to stay most childlike and adventurous, keep that freedom and excitement of discovery going, write more music and travel more, see the world and how different people live different lives. Also, I’m excited to return from an indoors life of recording and producing to my favourite hands-on hobbies such as pottery, horseback riding and in general being outdoors and in nature. But also I yearn to see my friends and family more and go out for a drink and dinner here and there.”

WHERE HOSPITALITY BECOMES AN EXPERIENCE

Founded in 1996 by restaurateur Rudi Kull and architect Albert Weinzierl, Kull & Weinzierl creates spaces in Munich where food, architecture, and design merge into a seamless, timeless experience.

Guided by the subtle interplay of space, concept, and service, Kull & Weinzierl operates a distinguished portfolio of restaurants, bars and hotels in Munich’s city centre. Their philosophy begins long before the plate: architecture shapes movement, proportions, and perspective, while design quietly sets the mood with natural, high-quality materials that age gracefully, gaining character over time. The result is an environment that resonates on a deeply personal level.

Guests may not notice every detail consciously, but they sense the difference: how naturally at ease they feel, how long they linger and how fully present they are in the moment. Exceptional food, thoughtful space, and considered design combine into a cohesive whole that transcends mere consumption.

Each venue – from Brenner Grill Pasta Bar to Bar Centrale and Cortiina Hotel – is crafted individually for its context and audience. What unites them is a clear design philosophy, a distinctive creative signature, and a shared DNA rooted in quality and meticulous attention to detail.

The team at Kull & Weinzierl understands that contemporary gastronomy in Munich demands both elegance and adaptability. Spaces transition effortlessly from day to night, blending international inspiration with local identity. Above all, authenticity and a commitment to the city define their approach. Their venues are not only part of Munich, but they also enrich its urban life, quietly and enduringly.

Trollinger Wine – the Beaujolais Nouveau alternative

Trollinger is the quintessential light, fresh, and quaffable German red – perfect for a summer afternoon.

THE WINE:

Jürgen Ellwanger's 2025 Trollinger Schorndorfer dry ruby red is light in body and has an inviting bouquet of strawberries, raspberries and cherries, as well as subtle floral notes. On the palate, it's light, refreshing and characterised by its tannin content and lively acidity. Red berry flavours are accompanied by a gentle earthiness and herbal undertones.

THE VINEYARD:

The Schondorfer Trollinger originates from a high quality vineyard with VDP.ORTSWEINE classification – a true mark of excellence. The unique terroir and cool climate there give this dry red wine its expressive character and abundant elegance.

2024 was a classic year, which allowed the grapes to ripen well, whilst still retaining their acidity – creating the perfect vintage.

THE VINIFICATION:

This Trollinger was mash-fermented. The wine then matured in 100-year-old wooden barrels.

ABOUT JÜRGEN ELLWANGER WINERY

Nestled in Württemberg, the Jürgen Ellwanger winery is renowned for producing exceptional Riesling, Lemberger, and Trollinger wines that truly express their origin.

Viticulture has been practiced by the Ellwanger family since 1514, but it was in 1949 that Gottlob Ellwanger founded the Ellwanger wine estate as it is today.

Under Gottlob's son Jürgen Ellwanger, the wine estate steadily grew to cover 26 hectares which are spread over five towns within the region. Each vineyard has a distinctive terroir, which differs in soil and micro climate, making every wine unique.

Today, Jürgen's sons Felix (pictured in the photo) and Joerg run this multi-award winning winery together. For Ellwanger, tradition is an obligation, and as such, they still use traditional cellar processes such as mash fermentation. However, the spirit of innovation and thinking outside the box are also part of their philosophy.

GREAT WINE BEGINS IN THE MIND

Set among gentle hills, striking climatic conditions and remarkable soil diversity, MUSTER.gamlitz embodies an approach to winemaking that consciously embraces consistency. Here, exceptional terroir meets traditional viticulture, demonstrating why less progress can sometimes mean more.

Nestled in Southern Styria, MUSTER.gamlitz stands for a philosophy that feels almost unusual in today’s wine world. While innovation and constant reinvention dominate elsewhere, the focus here remains firmly on what has proven itself over centuries. “I see the greatest progress in not wanting to make progress,” says winemaker Reinhard Muster. It is an attitude that slows things down and creates space for quality. “The best wines have always existed. This perspective profoundly reshapes the way we think.”

The region around Gamlitz offers ideal conditions. “I like to say we’re at the centre of the Illyrian climate zone,” Muster explains. “Temperamental, untamed weather, very distinct seasons, high rainfall and significant temperature differences between day and night during the growing season have an enormous influence on the grapes – just like the people who live here and make the wines.” A wide range of soil types, from limestone and clay to slate and sand, further enhances this diversity, cre-

ating almost limitless possibilities for white wine production.

At the heart of the work is always one idea: “Great wines are created exclusively in the mind.” Planning, precision and consistency shape the process from the very beginning, and this is precisely where the winery’s strength lies. Equally important, however, is the strong sense of unity between the Muster family, the team and the Wolf family.

For the past three years, Domaine 1196 has been home to production. The modern architecture and expanded possibilities of this partnership complement the traditional approach in a unique way, opening up new dimensions without altering the core philosophy.

A visit makes it immediately clear what sets MUSTER.gamlitz apart. “Alongside breathtaking views across the rolling landscape, there are also beautiful walking trails through our vineyards,” the vintner adds. “I always say: it

can be just as beautiful elsewhere, but never more beautiful.”

One wine that captures the essence of all this is the Sauvignon Blanc Illyr. According to Reinhard Muster, it embodies the full force of Southern Styria year after year – along with the accumulated knowledge and unmistakable signature of MUSTER.gamlitz.

VIENNA UNCORKED – A WINE LOVER’S CITY

Wine is as much a part of Vienna as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Schönbrunn Palace, or the Vienna Boys’ Choir. It is an essential element of the city’s identity. But Viennese wine is no longer limited to the traditional heuriger; it is increasingly spreading throughout the entire city, shaping the urban lifestyle of the metropolis.

When I first visited Vienna, I was enthralled by its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful architecture, delicious food, and well…the sheer amount of good wine the region had to offer. When I planned my first trip to the Austrian capital, I certainly did not expect to find myself on one of my favourite wine hikes to date, popping from small tavern to small tavern, meeting warm and passionate locals, just mere minutes from the city centre.

Little did I know that Vienna and wine are inseparable. And they have been for a long time. Vienna stands out as the only global capital with extensive wine production inside its city borders. Wine growing is a signature feature here, but it is more than just tradition; it plays a vital economic role, shapes Vienna’s character, supports the city’s ecosystem, and enhances the quality of life for locals and visitors. To safeguard these vineyards, a groundbreaking 2015 law requires that city vineyards remain dedicated to winegrowing, protecting them from real estate development and preserving their heritage. Viennese wine, once tied mainly

to traditional heuriger taverns, is now a vibrant part of the city’s culture. It takes centre stage at festivals and is featured in wine bars and shops throughout Vienna, making it easy for locals and visitors to savour its unique character almost anywhere in the city.

CAPITAL OF WINE

Vienna is more than Austria’s capital. It is a bona fide wine region. Spanning roughly 600 hectares, the city’s vineyards support about 170 dedicated winemakers, who together produce approximately 2.4 million litres of wine each year. White grape varieties dominate, accounting for about 85 per cent of the planted area. Among the standout wines are Riesling, Weissburgunder, Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gelber Muskateller, each delivering a fresh, vibrant elegance that is unmistakably Viennese. The city’s unique location, where warm Pannonian air mingles with crisp breezes from the north, creates an ideal microclimate, giving these wines their signature balance of ripeness and lively acidity. The result? Wines that are a delight to sip,

whether enjoyed with classic Viennese dishes or as the perfect companion to a traditional heuriger snack.

Among Vienna’s unique wine offerings, the Field Blend – known locally as Wiener Gemischter Satz – stands out for its deep roots and distinctive character. In contrast to the high-yield grape production that took hold in much of Austria during the 19th century, Viennese vintners put their efforts into cultivating quality varieties like Riesling, Rotgipfler, Weissburgunder, and Traminer. These diverse grapes were planted side by side in the same vineyard, then harvested and fermented together, resulting in wines with remarkable layers: crispness, fruit flavours, and a full-bodied structure all in one glass. This traditional approach also provided a form of crop insurance, as the different bloom times of each grape meant that poor weather during flowering would only affect part of the harvest, not the entire crop. Although the Gemischter Satz was long associated with humble tavern offerings at the local heuriger,

it has recently enjoyed a comeback. Today, this quintessential Viennese wine appears in everything from light, easy-drinking bottles to complex, premium selections, once again earning its place at the heart of Vienna’s wine culture.

A LONG-STANDING WINE HERITAGE

Vienna’s relationship with wine is deeply rooted in its past, stretching back over two millennia. Archaeological finds show that the Celts and Illyrians were making wine as far back as 500 BC, but it was the Romans who truly set the stage by bringing cultivated grapevines from Italy. Over centuries, vineyards expanded across what would one day become the city’s neighbourhoods, with locals caring for wine gardens both within and beyond Vienna’s boundaries. The tradition of the heuriger, those iconic wine taverns serving locally crafted wines, took hold early and gained momentum when taverns moved to the city’s edge following Turkish invasions. During the late Middle Ages, Vienna’s wine consumption soared – far higher than today – only to diminish over time due to shifting tastes, new taxes, and rising competition from coffee and beer. Despite setbacks from vine diseases and the devastation of wars, dedicated vineyard preservation and a renewed emphasis on quality have led to a renaissance, making wine an es-

sential thread in the fabric of Vienna’s urban life once more.

Approximately 70 per cent of Vienna’s yearly wine production is enjoyed at the city’s iconic heuriger taverns. The tradition traces back to Emperor Josef II, who in 1784 decreed that local winemakers could serve wine crafted from their own vineyards. Today, visitors can spot an authentic heuriger by the distinctive Ausg’steckt sign and a fir branch outside –both symbols that guarantee the wine poured inside is made by the proprietor themselves. With their welcoming ambiance, leafy gardens on Vienna’s outskirts, excellent wines, and tempting regional fare, these taverns remain a beloved gathering spot for locals and travellers alike.

Vienna’s beloved heuriger wine tavern culture earned a spot on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2019, underscoring its significance. The Wiener Top-Heurigen association, launched by the Vienna Chamber of Agriculture, further ensures that only genuine wine taverns meeting strict standards – including those outlined in the Buschenschankgesetz act – can join. Members must deliver authentic ambiance, friendly service, and top-quality food and wine, guaranteeing an exceptional experience for guests.

If you are curious and want to combine a city trip with some amazing heuriger visits, from mid-April to the end of October, the vineyards are open to visitors: on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, when the weather is fine, Viennese wine can be enjoyed not only in the heuriger wine taverns themselves, but outdoors on the hillside vineyards and at pop-up heuriger – in many cases offering picturesque views over the city.

So, for those eager to blend urban exploration with unforgettable heuriger experiences, Vienna offers a unique opportunity each year from mid-April through late October. During this period, when the weather is pleasant, the city’s vineyards open their gates to guests on Fridays, weekends, and public holidays. Not only can wine lovers savour Viennese vintages in traditional heuriger taverns, but they can also enjoy their drinks outdoors – right among the vines or at lively pop-up heuriger spots – many boasting stunning panoramic views across Vienna.

STIFTUNG MOZARTEUM:

MOZART AS AUSTRIA’S CULTURAL AMBASSADOR

The International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg bridges the past and the present by incorporating contemporary elements, thus keeping an extraordinary legacy relatable.

“The Mozart museums keep Mozart alive and accessible,” explains managing director Linus Klumpner. “Our mission is to explore the extraordinary nature of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart through interdisciplinary approaches and to provide inspiration for the future.”

Temporary exhibitions regularly explore a wide range of topics in art and cultural history, conveying the legacy in a way that resonates with today’s audience. And as for concerts, the Mozart Week – under the artistic direction of Rolando Villazón since 2019 – draws worldrenowned musicians to Salzburg every year. Meanwhile, research projects such as the newly revised Köchel Catalogue, now also available in digital form, garner worldwide attention.

Wolfgang Amadé Mozart has never lost his relevance or appeal, says Klumpner: “This is due to both his approachable personality and his enduring legacy. For centuries, his music has resonated with people across generations, origins and cultural backgrounds. The Mozart museums offer the most authentic Mozart experience for both connoisseurs and the general public – nowhere else is the genius loci as palpable.”

However, the attraction extends far beyond European borders. “We have just completed a unique exhibition of precious Mozart manuscripts in collaboration with the renowned Morgan Library & Museum, New York.” This summer, the foundation will be staging a project by German conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl in Salzburg: 400 golden miniature Mozarts will populate the Mirabelle Gardens, bringing Mozart to the people.

Baden-Württemberg’s castles and fortresses are the stuff of stories, with dramatic towers and centuries-old legends around every corner. Whether gazing up at a mighty medieval fortress nestled in the woods or strolling through the gardens of a grand palace, each place has its own tale to tell, offering a personal glimpse into Southwest Germany’s fascinating past and vibrant culture.

Whether you long to wander through stately gardens, explore mysterious dungeons, or simply bask in the romance of bygone eras, the German state of Baden-Württemberg’s remarkable collection of castles and fortresses invites you to step back in time and discover the magic that still lingers around every turret and rampart.

There is a reason why Baden-Württemberg is dotted with so many castles and fortresses – its past is as lively as its landscape. For centuries, the region was divided into countless small territories, duchies and principalities, all jostling for influence and protection. This constant rivalry meant that local rulers built not just strongholds to guard their lands,

but also grand castles to flaunt their status. Today, you can still see these remarkable buildings, each one a reminder of the area’s medieval roots and the lasting impact of its noble families.

Take Hornberg Castle, for example, perched high above the Neckar Valley. This castle stands as a striking example of medieval grandeur, complete with sturdy towers, stone ramparts, and breathtaking vistas over the Odenwald forest. Still owned by the Gemmingen-Hornberg family, this historic stronghold is most famously tied to Götz von Berlichingen, the legendary knight brought to life in Goethe’s classic play. Step inside and you will find Götz’s original suit of armor on display,

while a night spent within these storied walls or a hearty feast in the great hall lets visitors immerse themselves in the authentic spirit of the Middle Ages.

In Heidelberg, a picturesque city in southwestern Germany which is home to Germany’s oldest university, the red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle are iconic. What started out as a formidable fortress, Heidelberg Castle eventually evolved into a splendid Renaissance palace. Despite suffering significant destruction during the War of the Palatinate Succession in the late 1600s, the castle’s dramatic ruins later captured the imagination of Romantic poets and artists, making Heidelberg a symbol of longing and creativity.

These days, the castle welcomes countless visitors, offering lively tours in costume and local dialect that make its vibrant history feel real and engaging.

If you are more into historic gardens, Langenburg Castle, still home today to the Hohenlohe-Langenburg family, is your best bet. Between 1610 and 1616, the former castle was transformed into an elegant palace residence. Here, every year on the first weekend of September, Stately Garden Days invite flower lovers and garden enthusiasts to celebrate colourful displays, whilst car aficionados can explore classic vehicles and ground-breaking innovations in the German Automobile Museum in the former royal stables.

Just outside Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg Palace is a great example of Baroque splendour from the early 18th century. Commissioned by Duke Eberhard Ludwig, the palace was inspired by the grandeur of Versailles and remains one of Europe’s largest preserved Baroque palaces. Visitors get a glimpse into the opulent life of the historic royal court, while in the enchanting Blooming Baroque, or Blühendes Barock, gardens, fairy tales come to life: The Frog King, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and many more transport visitors of all ages away to spectacular worlds.

For those loving breathtaking views, Hohenzollern Castle on the edge of the Swabian Alb is a striking symbol of the region. Since 1850, the Hohenzollern family has restored their ancestral fortress and continues to maintain it today. Visitors are invited year-round to experience engaging guided tours and a variety of memorable events. Activities range from outdoor cinema evenings to the enchanting Royal Winter Magic, where twinkling lights, hot mulled wine and fresh waffles fill the castle with a festive atmosphere.

In Sigmaringen, another Hohenzollern Castle can be found. Towering above the Danube, the historic residence of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family stands out for its distinctive towers, ornate bay windows, and

stately gates – a castle with all the allure of a fairy tale. This enchanting setting has attracted numerous film productions, both from Germany and abroad, making it a favourite backdrop for period dramas and fantasy

movies. Guests are even invited to step into the past themselves, donning the costumes of noblewomen and knights during guided tours that lead them through the palace’s grand chambers and courtyards, allowing them to relive the stories and myths woven through centuries of history.

Dramatically perched atop a precipitous cliff, Lichtenstein Castle commands attention with its distinctive round tower and drawbridge –an unforgettable vision against the landscape. The castle’s fairy tale silhouette owes much to Wilhelm Hauff, whose 1826 novel Lichtenstein inspired the Count of Württemberg to acquire the rocky site and construct a fortress reminiscent of the story in 1840. Today, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in this literary legacy, exploring a castle that feels plucked straight from the pages of a romantic tale.

Wildenstein Castle, with roots stretching back to the 13th century, stands as a testament to history’s resilience. Its transformation in the 16th century ushered in the early-modern fortress we see today, complete with striking murals in the dining hall – now part of the youth hostel – which offer glimpses into its storied past. Encircled by deep moats and accessible

solely by bridges, Wildenstein’s dramatic setting is matched by its enduring appeal.

In Upper Swabia’s Ravensburg district, Waldburg Castle not only boasts centuries of heritage, but also panoramic views over Lake

Constance and the distant Alps. Far from being a relic, the ancestral home of the Waldburg family offers an interactive experience – think talking portraits, a guided app, and a rooftop selfie spot – making history engaging and accessible.

RHEINHOTEL

DREESEN:

Last but not least, Meersburg Castle, overlooking Lake Constance, claims over a thousand years of history. Legend has it that King Dagobert I laid its foundation stone in the 7th century, and throughout the ages, monarchs and bishops have resided within its walls. Despite many sieges, the fortress was neither conquered nor destroyed, offering visitors a rare, authentic journey through the centuries.

These remarkable castles stand as enduring witnesses to the passage of time, inviting visitors to connect with centuries of history and timeless beauty.

BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT

Centrally located, rooted in history and designed for modern living – Hilton Heidelberg brings together the best of both worlds.

In the heart of Heidelberg, Hilton Heidelberg combines historic substance with contemporary comfort. Built on the site of the former Hotel Schrieder, which shaped the city’s hospitality scene from 1845 onwards, the newly reimagined property carries its legacy forward with care. References to the original building remain, including in the names of its dining venues such as Schrieder’s Restaurant – a tribute to the site’s long-standing heritage.

Since reopening in 2023, Hilton Heidelberg has established itself as an international hotel with a clear, modern design language, while retaining its historic character. This blend of past and present creates a distinctive atmosphere that sets it apart from many other hotels in the city.

Another key advantage is its central location between the main railway station and the Old Town. Landmarks such as Heidelberg Castle, the Old Bridge and the Hauptstrasse – one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets – are all within easy walking distance. At the same time, excellent transport links nearby ensure straightforward arrivals and onward travel.

Whether visiting for business or leisure, Hilton Heidelberg offers a well-balanced combination of location, comfort and style, creating a stay that is both practical and atmospheric.

www.hilton.com

“YOUR WEDDING IS THE BEGINNING OF A STORY”

Something Blue Weddings, a Germany-based fine art destination wedding boutique agency, works with international couples to design and plan bespoke weddings across Europe: in Germany, Italy, France and beyond.

“I still remember the moment I fell in love with weddings. Not the flowers, not the tablescapes, but the feeling in the room when two people look at each other and everything else disappears,” remembers founder Nadine Eich. “That feeling is what I’ve dedicated my work to ever since.”

Nadine Eich’s approach is rare in the European wedding industry. She combines the structural precision of world-class event planning with the eye of a creative director. The result is a wedding that does not simply look beautiful. “It feels like you, elevated to its most refined and personal version,” says Eich.

Having lived in the United States, England, Spain and Denmark, Eich carries with her a genuine understanding of different cultures, different expectations and the courage it takes to plan the most important day of your life from thousands of miles away. “I make that journey feel effortless, supported and deeply personal from the very first conversation. Because your wedding is not an event. It’s the beginning of a story. And it deserves to be told beautifully.”

„EURE

ARRIVE. CONNECT. FEEL AT HOME.

How Momento Berlin and Momento Vienna redefine urban living for international professionals.

It is Tuesday morning and you already know where to find the best coffee in your neighbourhood! This feeling lies at the heart of Momento, the new residential concept from Greystar. A promise that has gradually changed the meaning of moving to a new place. Not a hotel, not a serviced apartment, not a short-term let. Something closer to what a city feels like once it is actually yours.

Momento's two European addresses, one in Berlin's vibrant Neukölln district, the other just steps away from Vienna's Danube Canal, were built around the simple idea that international professionals should not have to wait months before a city starts feeling like home. Flexible lease terms and fully furnished apartments take care of the practical side. The rest is covered by something much more difficult to design: atmosphere.

In Berlin, Momento brings together vibrant urban energy and thoughtfully designed living for globally mobile professionals. Residents can choose between furnished and unfurnished studios as well as one- and two-bedroom apartments ranging from 26

to 80 square metres, with private balconies and a choice of interior styles that feel friendly and well-considered rather than corporate.

Upstairs, a rooftop terrace looks out over the neighbourhood. Downstairs, co-working spaces, a cinema room, fitness and yoga studios and a podcast room fill the gap between living somewhere and being part of something.

Vienna carries the same philosophy with its own register. Internationally connected and highly liveable, the city has become a favourite among companies relocating executives and skilled professionals to Austria. Here, too, shared spaces and thoughtful design create an environment that feels both welcoming and supportive. The panoramic rooftop terrace has a way of making even the first week feel like a beginning rather than a transition. What connects both locations is the presence of community managers who actually do the work of making introductions, organising evenings and keeping the building feeling alive.

This is the kind of detail that seems insignificant; until you arrive somewhere new and realise how much it matters.

Momento represents Greystar’s approach to modern urban living. As one of the world’s leading providers of professionally managed rental housing, the company develops and operates residential concepts designed for changing lifestyles and the evolving needs of city residents. In Europe, Greystar focuses on high quality, flexible living solutions that respond to increasing mobility, smaller households, and growing expectations around convenience, design and community.

Momento is more than a temporary address.

Momento is where new beginnings take root.

ANKOMMEN.

WEISSENHAUS PRIVATE NATURE LUXURY RESORT: WHERE NATURE, WELLNESS AND GASTRONOMY REDEFINE LUXURY

Nestled between lush forests, endless meadows, and the gentle waves of the Baltic Sea, only 120 kilometres from Hamburg, Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort invites travellers to immerse themselves in tranquillity, wellness, and culinary excellence.

Set on an impressive 75-hectare estate, Weissenhaus offers a refreshing escape from everyday life. With a maximum of 60 guest rooms, the resort guarantees unparalleled privacy, space and exclusivity, surrounded by woodlands, meadows, and direct access to three kilometres of pristine Baltic shoreline. Located just 90 minutes away from Hamburg, it is easily accessible yet feels worlds apart, offering guests the perfect blend of natural beauty and tranquillity. “Weissenhaus is a place like no other,” shares Martin Elsner, managing director of Weissenhaus. “As a Private Nature Luxury Resort, we blend relaxation with inspiring activities: guests can join open yoga classes, attend pasta or sushi workshops, or participate in wine tastings.”

The estate, steeped in history and lovingly restored with traditional craftsmanship, is dotted with special spots like the greenhouse in the rose and scent garden, the big barn music studio, and a romantic observatory for stargazing. Whether going to an interesting workshop, a movie night in the private cinema in

the historic castle vaults, an event under the open sky in the resort’s very own amphitheatre, a visit to the children’s entertainment area Kükenhaus or the spacious playground with the kids, or a custom-made picnic in a secluded spot – Weissenhaus offers its guests of all ages a constant stream of new experiences.

“What makes Weissenhaus truly special is its individuality: no two rooms are alike, and each of the 11 buildings has its own unique story,” says Elsner. “Historic houses such as the castle, the Stellmacherei, or the Meierei lovingly preserve the original charm of the ancient village, while newer structures like the Orangerie and the Signature Villa introduce a sense of modern clarity.”

THE HEART OF RELAXATION

spa is a sanctuary of rejuvenation. Six distinct saunas, tranquil relaxation rooms, an indoor pool with a direct connection to the outdoors, a saltwater whirlpool, a saltherb sauna that overlooks the forest, and an onsen pool invite guests to unwind and reconnect to nature. Complemented by a hammam, steam bath, and rasul treatment option, the wellness journey at Weissenhaus is personalised by expert therapists offering a wide range of bespoke treatments. The yoga pavilion and active loft encourage mindful movement, while the Vitalbar provides light, healthy snacks to round off the holistic experience. The spa’s unique atmosphere, its calming effect, and deep connection to nature offer guests a sanctuary where tranquility can be truly embraced.

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES

The resort’s array of restaurants caters to every palate, from Mediterranean classics to inventive Asian delicacies. The Bootshaus restaurant, located directly on the beach, delights with sun-drenched terraces and uninterrupted sea views, serving modern Mediterranean dishes crafted from seasonal, local ingredients. “Generous terraces, a gentle sea breeze, and stunning sunsets create a setting reminiscent of balmy Mediterranean evenings,” Elsner says.

Restaurant NAMI, on the other hand, is housed in the historic castle and immerses guests in Asian cuisine, framed by European influences and breathtaking views of the garden, expansive meadows, and the ocean. Here, the finely balanced dishes are prepared with the utmost care and passion, and are presented in a stylish and unique way, from artful sushi rolls to homemade dim sum and Japanese Robata grill specialties.

Bar 1896, located in the historic castle vault, impresses with its uniquely crafted signature drinks, while the Kavaliershaus breakfast restaurant invites guests to indulge in a hearty breakfast every day until 12pm. Regular culinary events, wine evenings and sun-downer sessions further enhance the gastronomic experience.

NATURE AND HISTORY INTERWOVEN

Weissenhaus is more than a luxury resort; it is an experience shaped by the enchanting landscapes of the Hohwachter Bay and Holstein Switzerland. “The region around Weissenhaus brings together two different yet equally captivating landscapes,” Elsner observes. “Bay of Hohwacht enchants with its pristine coastline and wide Baltic views, while Holstein Switzerland offers gentle hills, lakes, and dense forests.”

From long walks along ancient tree avenues to expansive e-bike tours and starry nights in the observatory, guests are invited to reconnect

SPECIAL THEME: TOP EVENT LOCATIONS IN SWITZERLAND

The perfect setting

Need help with planning an event or looking for the perfect location for your next event? Look no further and simply take a look at the following special theme, where we have collected some great event locations in Switzerland.

MAGNIFICENT TRAIN EXPERIENCES:

CELEBRATE AND TRAVEL ON EXCLUSIVE

RAILWAY LINES

The search for the perfect event location is increasingly leading event planners, corporate clients, and railway enthusiasts to the rails – specifically, with the exceptional charter trains of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The “Churchill” and “Salon suisse” charter trains, in particular, offer unique opportunities to make events and transfers efficient and impressive. They thus redefine the railway as an event location.

Whether for event or transfer charters, SBB combines flexibility with a touch of history and exclusivity. Company anniversaries, weddings, Christmas parties, incentives, or customer events find the perfect setting here, as does the safe and comfortable transport of large groups who want their own scheduled route and prefer to remain private.

TAILORED EXPERIENCES

The variety of trains is remarkable. At its heart is the legendary “Churchill” Red Arrow, whose history dates back to the post-war period. In September 1946, it was provided to British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill for his travels through Switzerland. This not only gave rise to its unofficial name but also to a piece of living railway history. To this day, the “Churchill” is used for charter trips on the

standard-gauge network. 2026, the vehicle has undergone a comprehensive overhaul.

"Many hours have been invested to ensure that Switzerland's legendary railcar is preserved for many years to come," says Hanspeter Lendi, head of charter and tour operating. It is back in service since this year's May, bringing railway history to life for guests.

At both ends of the train, the “Churchill” has a driver’s cab enclosed by glass walls and doors. This gives guests a direct view into the driver's compartment. Seated there is one of only seven train drivers qualified to operate the “Churchill.” Inside the train, up to 96 guests can be accommodated at tables for four with red upholstered seats in an elegant atmosphere. Guests can enjoy hot and cold meals and music and announcements delivered by modern technology.

The modern counterpart to the “Churchill” is the exclusive “Salon suisse”, also called the Federal Council Carriage. Each of the two carriages seats 32 guests and features Le Corbusier armchairs, sofas with side tables, tables and chairs, a cloakroom with luggage storage, air conditioning, and a restroom. A state-of-the-art multimedia system, screen, and subwoofer enable meetings or set the mood with sound and light. The train can be configured for cinema or concert seating and is used for charter trips, VIP travel, and state receptions. Its luxurious ambiance makes it

the top choice for guests seeking something special, with many prominent figures having travelled in these carriages, adding to their unique charm.

In addition to the Churchill and “Salon suisse” carriages, other carriages such as the panorama coach and the sitting coach are available, each with its own unique features. The panorama coach, for example, boasts expansive panoramic windows offering breathtaking views of Switzerland's most beautiful landscapes throughout the journey. This carriage can be booked as a complete charter train or as an additional carriage and is primarily available outside the summer months – from mid-October to mid-April.

Furthermore, the sitting coach is the ideal solution for large groups, club trips, or corporate events, as it offers a capacity for up to 1,200 guests. The generously designed open-plan coach creates a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere, providing ample space for both socialising and relaxation.

“Charter trips are a tailor-made experience based on customer wishes,” Lendi sums it up. From events with historical charm to stateof-the-art transfers, everything is possible, and on request, the subsidiary Elvetino AG can provide suitable catering, from gourmet dinners to a lavish aperitifs, and delicious packed lunches.

For those who would like to experience a unique train journey without chartering an entire train, a wide range of themed trips are

also available, which can be booked individually or in small groups. Some examples include the three-and-a-half-hour brunch trip from and to Zurich on the “Churchill” train, the cheese tasting in the “Salon suisse” or the blues train with live music on the “Churchill”.

EXCLUSIVE SERVICE

Anyone planning an event with SBB charter trains benefits from a comprehensive service: from consultation to the journey itself, from choosing the right vehicle to a personal tour guide – SBB makes the journey part of the experience. "We are delighted and proud that our customers rate us 9.6 out of 10," said Lendi.

Planning a charter trip always requires a certain degree of foresight. The most sought-after dates are often booked months in advance – “at least two to three months, sometimes even up to two years in advance,” explains Lendi. The densely populated Swiss

rail network also presents organisers with particular challenges: charter services must be scheduled between regular trains and freight transport, demanding genuine precision and flexibility. But it is precisely this complexity that makes it so appealing, as the result is a trip completely tailored to the guests' wishes.

Special trains like the “Churchill” and “Salon suisse” become mobile event venues, creating lasting memories and opening up a new dimension in event planning, whether for corporate celebrations, special events, or simply for anyone seeking something unique. The journey is the destination, and on rails, every trip becomes an experience.

AN ALL-IN-ONE APPROACH: HYATT’S INTEGRATED EVENT CONCEPT AT THE CIRCLE

The Circle Convention Center at Zurich Airport is not a regular venue, but a fully integrated ecosystem of convention centre, hotels and services. The result is a global meeting point for international events.

Today, event planners are no longer simply looking for spaces, but for comprehensive solutions. This is where Hyatt at The Circle comes in, bringing together the Convention Center and the two on-site hotels, Hyatt Regency Zurich Airport The Circle and Hyatt Place Zurich Airport The Circle, into one seamless whole.

The location could hardly be more strategic. Situated directly at Zurich Airport, international guests can reach the convention centre within minutes of landing, without any transfers or detours. At the same time, public transport connections are excellent, with Zurich city centre just 15 minutes away. Train, tram and bus connections are right on

the doorstep, while the adjacent Circle Park offers a unique green oasis – ideal for walks, outdoor sessions or relaxed breaks in the middle of an event day.

The real value, however, lies not only in accessibility, but in the concept itself. Hyatt at The Circle is not simply operating two hotels alongside a convention centre. Instead, it offers an integrated experience in which events, accommodation and dining are designed to work together effortlessly.

Foto: The Circle Convention Center Zurich Airport

For organisers, this means one thing above all: less complexity. Rather than coordinating multiple providers, there is a single point of contact and clearly structured processes.

SHORT DISTANCES, SMOOTH PROCESSES

With a total of 555 rooms across the two Hyatt hotels, even multi-day or international events can be accommodated with ease. Guests move between meeting rooms, restaurants and hotel spaces without ever needing to leave the site. This all-in-one approach reflects what is increasingly expected in the MICE sector: efficiency, clarity and reliability.

At the heart of the concept is The Circle Convention Center itself. Spanning around 2,800 square metres, it offers 17 flexible meeting rooms as well as a spacious convention hall for events of up to 1,500 participants. From small workshops to largescale congresses, a wide range of formats can be realised here.

The strength of the location becomes particularly evident during international congresses, where several hundred to well over a thousand participants from different countries are connected both on-site and

digitally. Even complex programmes with parallel sessions and hybrid formats can be delivered smoothly and efficiently.

Equally striking are exclusive corporate events, where the convention hall is transformed through tailored staging, precise lighting concepts and bespoke catering. This balance of technical excellence and creative

freedom is what makes many events here particularly memorable.

FLEXIBILITY BY DESIGN

The versatility is made possible by a modular room concept. Spaces can be combined or used individually, set-ups can be adapted quickly, and modern technology is already fully integrated. An experienced events

team supports each stage of the process, from initial planning through to seamless execution on site.

Architecturally, too, The Circle stands apart from traditional congress centres. Designed by Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto, the overall concept is defined by openness, clarity and a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Generous windows flood the interiors with natural daylight, creating an environment that supports both focused work and creative exchange.

This balance between functionality and well-being is further enhanced by direct access to green spaces. The adjacent park offers a natural retreat where participants can relax between sessions or continue conversations in a more informal setting. Particularly for multi-day events, this aspect is increasingly valued.

TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY

The convention centre is fully equipped to meet the demands of modern event formats. Hybrid events, live streaming and interactive digital participation are now the standard, supported by a robust IT infrastructure and reliable connectivity. Working with

experienced technical partners, the team ensures that physical and digital audiences can be seamlessly connected.

Sustainability is another key pillar of the concept. The entire site incorporates energy-efficient building systems, resourceconscious operations and regional, seasonal catering. At the same time, demand for practical, easy-to-implement sustainable solutions is growing among organisers, particularly when these can be integrated without adding complexity.

The response has been correspondingly positive, especially when environmental responsibility is combined with a highquality event experience. The LEED Platinum certification underlines this commitment and demonstrates that sustainability and premium events can go hand in hand.

The MICE sector itself is evolving, and Hyatt is responding accordingly. Demand for integrated solutions continues to grow, particularly for international and multi-day events. Organisers are looking for short distances, clear structures and a reliable overall set-up.

This is precisely where The Circle excels: in combining location, infrastructure and a carefully considered concept. Rather than a collection of separate elements, it offers a single, cohesive environment where everything comes together, from arrival to accommodation.

The result is more than just a venue. The Circle becomes a destination in its own right, where business is not simply hosted, but experienced as a connected, holistic whole.

SPECIAL THEME: LAKE ESCAPES – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKESIDE HOTELS

Shoreline serenity

Imagine waking up to gentle waves lapping against the shore, sunlight shimmering across tranquil waters, and breathtaking views just outside your window. This special introduces some enchanting destinations where nature's beauty and luxurious comfort merge.

BETWEEN WATER AND OPEN SPACE

Everything softens by the water. Thoughts settle, the view stretches out and the moment begins to matter a little more. Being close to the lake creates space – for rest, for clarity and for time that finally feels unhurried.

What began at Fleesensee has grown into a network of distinctive destinations. The Five E Group develops and operates hotels and resorts shaped by the calm of the water. Across Müritz, Plauer See and Fleesensee, they create places where nature, activity and relaxation come together effortlessly.

Set between two lakes, MAREMÜRITZ Yachthafen Resort offers spacious apartments with uninterrupted views over the water. A private marina, its own beach and a spa area provide plenty of scope for both relaxation and activity. Guests travelling with dogs benefit from the immediate access to nature and the freedom of the surrounding landscape. An in-house restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine completes the experience.

On the shores of Lake Plau, BEECH Resort Plauer See brings together active days and slower moments. Its diving centre offers a unique way to experience the lake from a completely different perspective. Dining with views over the water is part of the experience,

making that connection felt throughout the stay. Generous apartments offer space for families and longer visits, while the WALD SPA provides a calm retreat, with a natural swimming pond, saunas and a setting designed to complement its nature surroundings.

For those looking to stay active on land, Hotels & Sportresort Fleesensee – the largest sport and leisure resort in Northern Europe – offers a wide range of options. Several golf courses with a total of 72 holes, along with Europe’s largest driving range, set the tone. Tennis, squash and padel courts, as well as

the AQUAFUN water park, add further variety. SCHLOSS Hotel Fleesensee and BEECH Resort Fleesensee, as well as the only ROBINSON Club at Fleesensee, complement the offering with accommodation options.

What ties all of these places together is a sense of belonging to something larger. The Five E Group knows how to create lasting memories. From the first coffee at their own roastery to produce from their own farms, and time spent on the golf course, by the water or in the spa, it all fits together. The

result is a kind of holiday that feels effortless, varied and exactly as it should.

MARISSA RESORT DÜMMER SEE: FEELING HYGGE AT THE LAKESIDE

The calming rhythm of waves or the sunset reflecting across a lake: there is something soothing about water. At Marissa Resort on the tranquil shores of Lake Dümmer, these moments define the entire holiday experience.

Lake Dümmer (Dümmer See) is a destination that exudes that cosy hygge feeling. Known for its long sailing tradition and shallow waters, it offers a more intimate alternative to busier coastal escapes. The surrounding region is marked by authentic villages and lush green landscapes, and invites guests to slow down and disconnect from their everyday struggles.

“Regardless whether our guests cycle along car-free roads and landscapes or enjoy the lake, unspoilt nature and relaxing experiences are always just a short distance away,” enthuses marketing director Ricki Lyngsøe.

At the heart of the experience lies the resort’s vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere. Families gather at Lykke Land, a lively hub of activities for children of all ages, while couples unwind at the spa, soaking in panoramic lake views. A typical day might include kayaking on the water, lounging on the sandy beach or indulging in the sauna before a romantic dinner by the lake.

Speaking about dinner… Food, too, is part of the resort’s particular experience. Evenings often begin at the Mezzomar restaurant and end with a drink in hand at Skål Pub or at Beachmar, the resort’s very own beach bar. “Our location ensures the most spectacular

sunsets at the beach,” notes Ricki. “A truly special experience.”

Beyond the expected, Marissa offers wonderful surprises. From outdoor cinema nights and beach barbecues to immersive escape games set in nature. “We even cater for four-legged guests, for instance with a dedicated dog beach, and ensure that no family member is left behind or excluded from the holiday.”

What further elevates Marissa Resort is the service of the team. “We take pride in our

friendly guest service and premium accommodation as well as our genuine hospitality and the memorable moments for families and couples of all ages we create.”

Long after leaving Marissa Resort, guests will certainly remember more than the beauty of Lake Dümmer. They carry with them a sense of calm and comfort. This hygge feeling – or as Ricki puts it; “The feeling of waking up on a Sunday summer morning with the knowledge that the day would be warm, exciting and relaxing, surrounded by water” – is what makes Marissa Resort Dümmer

See a truly special holiday destination.

MARISSA RESORT DÜMMER SEE: FÜHL’ DICH HYGGE

A particular highlight of the wellness area is the ‘black gold’ – the alpine high moor, which is considered a regional healing and relaxation treatment and continually inspires new applications. Moor treatments are therefore offered at the Parkhotel am Soier See as regional healing and relaxation treatments.

In addition to classic wellness treatments, aromatherapy baths, alpine revitalising massages with St. John's wort oil, and exotic treatments such as African Stone or Ayurvedic Abhyanga massages are also available. The combination of traditional naturopathy and modern therapeutic approaches creates an exceptional wellness experience that goes far beyond short-term relaxation.

The weekly changing activity programme, yoga retreats, and offerings focused on movement and mindfulness perfectly complement the medical and wellness-oriented services. The spacious sauna area, including the new EGOA Lifestyle Sauna as a modern interpretation of Finnish sauna culture, and the Amani Spa with four saunas, steam grottos, a relaxation room, and a cosy corner, invites deep re-

laxation. Here, wellness is directly connected with nature – the alpine architecture paired with African design elements awakens all the senses and creates a harmonious atmosphere for lasting well-being.

A CULINARY EXPERIENCE

The Parkhotel also offers culinary surprises: the cuisine combines regional roots with modern standards and focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients from the surrounding area. Health-conscious menus meet regional specialties, given a contemporary interpretation. Furthermore, individual nutritional plans are offered as part of the medical wellness services.

At Restaurant 4 Jahreszeiten, guests enjoy classic Bavarian cuisine with a modern interpretation, while the African Lounge delights with Cape Malay cuisine and a wide selection of South African wines – a culinary experience that harmoniously combines enjoyment and a healthy lifestyle.

Themed evenings and special highlights such as the Bavarian & South Tyrolean

Evening, the romantic candlelit dinner, or the exotic African dinner ensure variety and moments of culinary delight. Exclusive private dining in the cooking lounge also allows guests to watch the chef prepare their meals or even actively participate in the cooking, accompanied by a personal chef for an unforgettable evening in a private atmosphere.

The Parkhotel am Soier See is a family-run hotel that invites guests to return. "For us, the well-being of the guest is paramount – for body and soul," Friedel concludes.

TIME TO COOL OFF – THE TOP 12 SWIMMING SPOTS IN GERMANY, SWITZERLAND AND AUSTRIA

Looking for the best swimming spots in Germany, places for wild swimming in Switzerland or great swimming lakes in Austria? Summer in Central Europe is a celebration of water. From crystal-clear Alpine lakes to windswept North Sea beaches and fun riverside city stretches – Germany, Switzerland and Austria offer countless places to take a dip.

Lake Wolfgangsee. Photo: Intersport Austria

For travellers and swimming enthusiasts searching for the region’s most remarkable destinations, the following 12 spots rise above the rest. We have spotlighted four standouts in each country, drawing on their natural beauty, atmosphere, accessibility, and the word-of-mouth buzz that keeps them popular year after year. If you are planning a swimming break, let this guide lead you to the region’s most memorable waters.

Starting off with Germany, our list of top swimming spots include everything from

sandy beaches to relaxing lakes. Sporting around 2,000 kilometres of coastline along the North and Baltic Seas, as well as over 30 islands, and swimming lakes or rivers in almost any town, the country is a swimmer’s paradise in summer.

1. ELLENBOGEN NATURE SANCTUARY, SYLT

At the northern tip of Germany, where the land tapers into wind-swept dunes and the North Sea whispers secrets, you will find the Ellenbogen Nature Sanctuary. Sylt’s long, white beaches are legendary, but Ellenbogen’s tran-

quil stretch offers a special escape. The gentle surf is ideal for families; children play in soft sands, while the List Ost lighthouse stands watch. It is a place where wild swimming meets postcard scenery.

2. WANGEROOGE, EAST FRISIAN ISLANDS

For generations, the island of Wangerooge has been synonymous with classic summer holidays. Wide sandy beaches dotted with cheerful Strandkorb chairs invite swimmers to linger. Locals and visitors alike head here for safe, shallow waters and sunsets that paint the sky in pastel hues. Wangerooge’s beaches are often recommended for relaxation, swimming, and the timeless pleasure of a seaside stroll.

3. ELBSTRAND, HAMBURG

Hamburg’s Elbstrand offers a different vibe: urban, dynamic, and thoroughly beloved by city dwellers. Stretching along the River Elbe, the sandy strip buzzes with life – swimmers, picnickers, and sunbathers watch ships glide by against a backdrop of industrial architecture. It is a quintessential Hamburg experience, proof that a city beach can be every bit as charming as a secluded lake.

4. LAKE KÖNIGSSEE, BAVARIA

When it comes to mountain lakes, few places are as enchanting as Königssee in Bavaria. Surrounded by steep cliffs and ancient forests, its emerald waters are as clear as glass. Accessible by boat or a vigorous hike, the lake is beloved for its tranquillity and natural splen-

dour. Swimmers here rave about the purity of the water and the breathtaking views.

Thanks to its abundance of pristine city rivers, crystal-clear mountain waters, and breathtaking alpine scenery, Switzerland is an outstanding destination for wild swimming. The high water quality, easy access to natural sites, and dramatic backdrops of snow-capped peaks or rolling hills create a truly memorable expe-

rience that blends adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty.

5. LAKE GENEVA (LAC LÉMAN), LAUSANNE

Lake Geneva is a fixture of Swiss life, drawing swimmers, sailors, and sunbathers to its vast blue expanse. Lausanne’s waterfront is a hive of activity, with public beaches, parks and lively promenades set against the distant peaks of the Alps. The water is inviting and clean, and the atmosphere festive for those seeking a blend of city energy and lakeside relaxation.

6. LAKE LUCERNE (VIERWALDSTÄTTERSEE), LUCERNE

Lake Lucerne is a showcase of Swiss beauty. Its deep blue waters are framed by soaring mountains and storybook villages. At Seebad Luzern, an historic lido with wooden piers, locals gather for swims, sun, and laughter. The lake is versatile, perfect for wild swimming, family fun, or simply soaking in the scenery.

7. LAKE CAUMASEE, FLIMS

Tucked away in Graubünden’s forests, Lake Caumasee is a turquoise gem. Its warm waters and sandy beach create an alpine beach experience unlike any other. Accessible by foot or shuttle, the lake is a favourite for families, nature lovers and anyone chasing natural intimacy with ease of access.

8. LAKE ZURICH, ZURICH

Zurich’s lakefront is a living part of the city, where locals and visitors gather at places like Seebad Enge and Strandbad Mythenquai to swim, paddleboard and picnic. The water is clean, the vibe is urban-cool, and the backdrop of distant hills completes the picture.

In Austria, on the other hand, thanks to the country's remarkable variety of lakes and natural settings, swimmers can bask on sandy beaches, explore tranquil reed beds, or enjoy panoramic mountain vistas reflected in glassy alpine waters.

9. LAKE WOLFGANGSEE, SALZKAMMERGUT

Austria’s Salzkammergut region is famed for its lakes, and Wolfgangsee is a favourite among locals and travellers. Public beaches at Strobl and St. Gilgen offer safe swimming, water sports and mountain views. The water glitters in the sunlight, and the surrounding villages lend an air of timeless charm.

10. LAKE ACHENSEE, TYROL

Achensee is Tyrol’s answer to the perfect alpine lake: deep, clear, and surrounded by hiking trails and lidos. It is popular for both wild swimming and family outings, with views that make every dip a delight. No wonder it is often referred to as the Fjord of the Alps.

11. LAKE NEUSIEDLER SEE, BURGENLAND

Neusiedler See, Austria’s largest steppe lake, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its shallow waters and reed beds create a unique swimming experience – ideal for families, birdwatchers, and those who love sailing. Locals cherish its blend of nature and recreation.

12. ALMSEE, UPPER AUSTRIA

Almsee belongs to those secret lists of places that feel untouched. Situated in the Totes Gebirge mountains, its waters are pure and its atmosphere serene. Motorboats are absent, ensuring quiet swims and peaceful afternoons.

The joy of swimming in Germany, Switzerland and Austria lies in the variety: wild coastlines, city rivers, alpine lakes and tranquil beaches. Each destination has its own spirit and stories, making every swim an adventure worth remembering.

The local wisdom:

• Before you swim, check water quality and safety updates from local authorities or lifeguards.

• At busy beaches and lakes, lifeguard services add another layer of security – especially for families.

• Bring sunscreen, towels, and food to make the most of a day outdoors; picnics are part of the tradition.

• Public transport and cycling are smart choices for reaching popular spots during peak months as parking can be tricky.

DISCOVER HER POWER WITH TABEA SOPHIA ERNST AT ON MY WAY STUDIO

The most interesting businesses right now are being built by women who refuse to become content with a system they no longer believe in. A new GOALGIRLS* column about women building business differently.

There are many interviews with inspiring female founders. Most begin with the same questions – and end with the same polished answers. But a business does not change through polished answers. It changes through people who challenge the script. That is exactly what DISCOVER HER POWER is about.

Women who do not adapt to outdated systems – but rewrite them entirely. This time: Tabea Sophia Ernst.

MEET A FOUNDER WHO REFUSES TO PERFORM FOR THE ALGORITHM

Tabea Sophia Ernst is a content creator, storyteller and founder of On My Way Studio, a creative studio helping brands and individuals find their own voice in a digital world obsessed with templates.

At first glance, Tabea works in content. But what she is really doing is challenging a culture of performance. Because in a world where everyone is told to just be authentic –while following the exact same formula – authenticity has become its own performance. Tabea is here to disrupt that.

WHEN VULNERABILITY BECOMES POWER

Kaddie: Where does your girl power come from?

Tabea: "My strength lies in what others call vulnerability. I openly speak about mental health and personal topics. Some people say that makes me attackable. But if someone wants to use my honesty as a weakness, that says far more about them than it does about me. I don’t adapt because I get pushback. I go into confrontation. That’s what makes me dangerous for the system – I always find the words to disarm it."

BURN THE 0815 CONTENT STRATEGY

Kaddie: If your business was a movement –what would it destroy?

Tabea: "It would destroy generic advice, surface-level storytelling and the idea that one strategy works for everyone. I would tear 0815 content strategies to the ground. Trend-based storytelling might create short-term reach; but not real value, meaningful branding or genuine community.

Everyone says: ‘Be authentic.’ Then gives you the exact same formula. That doesn’t work. My business gives more visibility to people who find and own their own perspective. Instead of letting the algorithm define what authenticity should look like."

DELETE THIS NARRATIVE:

Kaddie: Which assumption about women in business should be deleted?

Tabea: “That women are too emotional. Actually, let’s keep that one and redefine it. Emotional intelligence helps people negotiate better, lead better and build stronger relationships."

WHEN POWER SHIFTS

Kaddie: What would be different if more women led companies?

Tabea: "Leadership would shift far beyond the boardroom. Girls would dream bigger because they would actually see what’s possible. Boys would be freed from the exhausting pressure of always having to be the big baller.”

And businesses would become less ego-driven. Some call waiting, analysing and then acting hesitation. I call it tactical intelligence."

TABEA SOPHIA ERNST IS NOT JUST CREATING CONTENT. SHE IS CREATING CLARITY.

Because in a digital world obsessed with performance, helping people sound like themselves might be one of the most radical businesses you can build.

This column in three learnings: Authenticity is not a template. Emotional intelligence is not weakness. Algorithms should not define identity.

And one more thing: Women do not need to become tougher to lead. The system needs to become smarter.

Real people – the complex pattern of citizens that forms Berlin

Most journalists have to do side jobs to balance out the irregularities of a freelancer’s life. Here, they are called Minijobs, and you can do them on a long- or short term basis as needed.

One of those Minijobs has recently brought me insights into the various communities that together weave the unique pattern this town is made of. I will not disclose too much about the job itself – in short, it helps people in extreme situations with everyday chores. They exist at all levels of society, but the majority lives their twilight years alone in small flats. My first client was an elderly lady who looks back on a fulfilled life with her deceased husband who, as she puts it, “drove the big yellow ones.” The big yellow ones are Berlin’s public city buses. Always curious about a Berliner’s history, I asked her about her childhood in post war-Berlin and it turned out that after 1945, her family of seven lived in a Datsche for several years – a small allotment garden house, often the only structure left to a family after the carpet bombings. My client’s Datsche was cold and damp and afforded her a chronic lung condition. She still sees her life as blessed, through to the humble beginnings.

Another client has just been through a heart operation and lives in a tiny studio flat (Einraumwohnung) with a small balcony. Though living in one of the council estates

of a large North Berlin housing association, he enjoys an astonishingly nice view of a church surrounded by greenery. The view is quite fitting: this client has spent years living and working in a Greek monastery. Among other things, his humble dwellings therefore reveal a good taste in icons. “I’m content with my life,” he told me on my last visit, echoing the widow’s statement from above. He cannot afford a tip, but I got chocolate the last time, and this time I went home with two bars of herbal soap. On my first visit though, he insisted on giving me an orthodox medallion. It humbles you.

Then, there is the new middle class of the hip quarters such as Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte. Here, the vulnerable part can be a sick child or a stressful family situation after a hospital stay. These families usually live in big apartments in charmingly restored Gründerzeit buildings – well-equipped, but with more than enough work to do. In short, it is like stepping from one world into another on a daily basis – and realising how much we all exist in a bubble. I therefore urge the curious visitor to veer off the trodden paths sometimes – which can simply mean to

explore a side street or to get off one subway station before your original destination. Pop into a real Späti (a neighbourhood shop open till late – please avoid the tourist fakes) or the next Schultheiss pub (see above) for a cheap coffee, beer or sandwich – and listen to the neighbourhood chat. The real Berliner is not far from where you are standing!

When a few letters just won't do

TEXT & PHOTOS: BARBARA

We Germans seem to love stringing nouns together to make up new terms. This results in some seriously long words, often including a hyphen in written language, to help overwhelmed eyes cope with the barrage of characters on the screen or paper. However, a lot of these words are not actually part of our official vocabulary, meaning they are not listed in the ultimate reference for all things German language, called Duden after Konrad Duden who first published this dictionary of the Standard High German language in 1880. And many are simply theoretical words and not part of everyday language, because a considerable share of mega compounds is firmly confined to the realm of bureaucracy, that is the language of law and public administration.

Trust me, no ordinary German would ever have uttered the word Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (63 letters, feel free to count). It was the name of a law passed in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1999, with the purpose of ensuring the correct implementation of EU regulations on the traceability of beef following the mad cow disease crisis. If you want it shorter, the abbreviation

is RkReÜAÜG, and in English it would have been something along the lines of the Act on the Transfer of Beef Labelling Monitoring Tasks. Much easier, isn’t it? Sometimes it makes sense to arrange individual words with a few connectors instead of just cobbling them all together. But anyway, no need to worry about this mad compound noun any longer. The Act was repealed in 2013.

The officially longest German word according to Duden is currently Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-Hyperaktivitätsstörung, at 44 letters without the hyphen. Although, in everyday life, that doesn’t really hold true either. Because what we actually use in the real world is the abbreviation for this word, which is ADHS. I have a feeling that a not inconsiderable share of the German population wouldn’t know what’s behind those letters, because the acronym has effectively become the word. Should you be wondering what it means in English, it’s attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, better known as ADHD. Here we go, sometimes only an abbreviation will do. No matter if in German, where, as per the Duden definition, words need to have a minimum of 32 letters to qualify for the category long, or in English, where, taking an

educated guess, that figure would probably be closer to a modest 15. And with that, I’m leaving you to go back above and count the letters of you-know-what…
