Research Excellence An international reputation for excellence in research.

Our leading faculty members advance business knowledge all across the globe, guiding and redefining business excellence.

Research conducted through UBC Sauder informs public policy locally and internationally. Closer to home, it inspires the learning of our students.

A sea of change in green shipping.

Featured Impact Ships transport an estimated 90 per cent of global trade, the environmental impact of which is felt the world over. However, there has been a lack of in-depth analysis of green shipping in business management, political economy and global governance literature.

Of the five pillars of research, the first pillar, Trade and Logistics Governance, will be chaired by UBC Sauder’s Professor David Gillen, while the second pillar, Green Port Governance, will be co-chaired by UBC Sauder’s Professor Trevor Heaver.

The Green Shipping Research Network has a singular goal: to contribute policy recommendations that will advance sustainable maritime shipping practices. In effect, turning the tide on the environmental impact of the shipping industry.

UBC Sauder is leading an international network of researchers who have come together from academia, government and industry to further green shipping practices.

Impacts utstanding female researchers O • UBC Sauder has a number of outstanding female researchers, including Professors Kai Li, Sandra Robinson and Katherine White. In fact, Professor White was recognized as one of UBC’s outstanding researchers who received the UBC Killam Research Award.

Celebrating academic successes • Professor Darren Dahl, who holds the Innovate BC Professorship in Sales and Sales Management, was named by the American Marketing Association as the second-most productive scholar in the world in terms of publications in premier marketing outlets between 2008 and 2017.

Addressing affordable housing • Strategy and Business Economics Associate Professors Thomas Davidoff and Tsur Somerville, are finding ways to correct the nearly out-of-control housing market in Vancouver.

Professor Davidoff engages in substantial public outreach and has been cited in 1,867 local and international media outlets from 2017 to May 2019.

Transformative Student Experience To truly become the world’s next great generation of leaders, our students need to develop a deeper understanding of who they are and what they’re capable of.

Impacts Gaining hands-on consulting experience • In our Master of Business Analytics (MBAN) program, every one of our students participates in a three-month consulting project. This gives them hands-on experience and contributes to the success of businesses, which in the past have included the likes of TELUS, YVR, Vancouver and Fraser Health.

Cultivating a generation of leaders • Our Bachelor of Commerce students have the opportunity to partake in the Leading with Confidence program. Since it began in 2017, 30 BCom students have participated in the eight-month program. Through one-on-one leadership coaching and workshops led by industry professionals, students discover their values, strengths and unique leadership style.

Before they drive change, our students experience change.

Global Immersion Experience (GIE) When our students have a transformative experience here at UBC Sauder, they set out on a path to transform every aspect of their work from that point onward.

They see themselves in a new light. They approach problems in new ways. They see opportunities where others see only challenges.

Each year, for example, UBC MBAs partake in our Global Immersion Experience, where they build connections with academia and industry across the globe.

In 2019, MBAs chose between Santiago, Tel Aviv, Berlin and Hong Kong, where they worked directly

with the management of a local company to better understand the nuances of international business.

This work expands their global network and enhances their already robust experience. It gives our MBAs a chance to put into practice the knowledge they’ve acquired over the course of their classroom learning. It lets them experience for themselves the transformation they’ve made over the course of this rigorous program while solving challenging business issues in the process.

We’re working to make it possible for every single one of our students – from undergraduates to professionals – to have a transformative UBC Sauder experience.

Sharing knowledge around the world • Last year, in our Sauder Social Entrepreneurship program, more than 20 UBC Sauder students shared their business acumen with 30 smallbusiness owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in the poorest areas of Nairobi, Kenya.

Social events such as the annual UBC Sauder summer BBQ and United Way fundraising events help foster community building.

Supporting our team • We are committed to enhancing the health and wellbeing of our employees. Recent initiatives focus on mental health including mindfulness and meditation workshops, while physical activity is encouraged through yoga classes, participation in UBC Thrive events, UBC Staff and Faculty Sports Day, as well as the ever-popular annual UBC Sauder soccer shinny.

Since 1990, Peter Lee, UBC Sauder alum and founder and principal of Gallant Investment Partners, has been an active supporter of UBC Sauder. He founded the Peter Lee Scholarship in Finance, for example, which supports students entering a career in the capital markets.

Thanks to the Peter Lee Asia Initiative, UBC Sauder now has a Shanghai-based Alumni Engagement Officer who supports alumni events in Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong; holds face-to-face meetings with alumni; and develops strong working relationships with key stakeholders in the region.

Whether by volunteering their time, offering the gift of mentorship or financially supporting the school, every actively involved alum and partner makes a meaningful impact on our community.

In 2018, Lee helped establish a new initiative that is allowing UBC Sauder to further strengthen our presence in key cities in Asia. This allows the School to expand the thriving community of almost 5,000 alumni living in the region.

Nowhere is this more evident than at Creative Destruction Lab West (CDL-West), a milestones-

based mentorship program for seed-stage technology ventures that supports scientific founders to activate research and move it from the lab into our lives.

CDL-West provides coaching from world-leading entrepreneurs, support from university and industry technologists, and access to growth resources.

It is one way UBC Sauder can improve human health and wellness, drive environmental sustainability and promote positive social impact; the commercialization of promising technology aids in bringing these new innovations to the world.

In parallel, CDL-West offers a transformational experience for senior undergraduate students from UBC Sauder and for graduate students from the Master of Business Administration program, the Master of Engineering Leadership program and the Master of Health Leadership and Policy program.

Through CDL-West, these students learn by doing as they work alongside ventures on discrete value-add projects.

“Students are exposed to a level of rigour and clarity that they normally wouldn’t experience in the classroom, making CDL-West an incredibly hands-on learning experience,” says Paul Cubbon of CDL-West.

Its impact is being felt throughout the careers of UBC Sauder students; since its inception a few years ago, more than half a dozen MBAs and BComs have been recruited by CDL-West companies.

CDL-West runs two streams: Prime (technology agnostic) and Health (for ventures pursuing commercial opportunities to improve human health and wellness). Health was recently recognized as the 2019 Strategic LifeSciences Partner of the Year by LifeSciences BC.

Discovering what motivates better choices • UBC Sauder Marketing and Behavioural Science Professor Katherine White’s research into what determines whether consumers buy eco-friendly products has led to groundbreaking insights into consumer thinking.

Finding innovative ways to drive change • Through the support of the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation, the RECODE Program at UBC, led by the UBC Sauder School of Business, will expand and integrate initiatives related to social entrepreneurship and innovation on campus.
