How can we use energy and other natural resources more efficiently? Where can we improve our American-based manufacturing process so that it leaves nothing to waste? As we begin our 60th year, we are focused on implementing the nationâ€™s most stringent energy efficiency standards, to help building owners and design professionals reduce energy consumption by up to 30%. Change, weâ€™ve been embracing for six decades.

Some of my earliest memories are of my father and Prudential Lighting. I remember being in the car the night my dad picked up the first piece of manufacturing equipment he bought for the company. On weekends, our family drove around Southern California, looking for construction sites where dad could obtain the name of the contractors in hopes of submitting a bid. Over the last 60 years, we have grown from the smallest to the largest lighting fixture manufacturer in Los Angeles. Looking back, it’s been the result of starting with the right core values and sticking with them. We believe that everyone we do business with—employee, customer, or vendor—is our partner and deserves to be treated with courtesy and respect. We believe that when we combine our collective knowledge and imagination, anything is possible. Prudential Lighting became and it remains a trusted name among design professionals simply because we’ve always embraced change. As we approach our 60th anniversary, radical advances in technology are helping us design better products at reduced costs while delivering new fixtures to your job sites faster than ever before. Our streamlined processes have enabled Prudential to continue manufacturing as a union shop in downtown Los Angeles. Today, through our experimentation and innovation, Prudential is making huge gains in efficiency and optical performance. It’s the culmination of a vision of what we do, and why we do it, that’s held true for 60 years. This special 60th anniversary edition book is far beyond anything I could have imagined. In watching it come together, I’ve been overwhelmed with pride. It showcases the creativity that can result when you choose Prudential Lighting for your project. But more importantly for me, it captures how my dad felt about our people, our products and our progress. My hope is that on these pages you will find the inspiration to transform interior environments for the good of all. This 4" aperatured, continuous recessed perimeter system for T-bar or hard ceilings gives a choice of wall graze or soft glow optical distributions allowing P43 to adapt to any space. We make things. And in the process, we try to make things better. For the environment and for future generations. Our ultimate goal: eliminating any waste of material and natural resources from our production process. After all, the light we create, and how we create it, can ensure brighter days ahead for all of us. Here are five key areas we’re focused on.

3. Energy 1. Water. Here in Los Angeles, no resource is more precious than water. That’s why the dionized water we use to clean our fixtures is recycled in a closed-loop and no harmful chemicals are being released into the water table. The polyester powder-coat paint discharges no CFC’s or other harmful chemicals into the environment.

2. Resources. We locally source as much as possible. It helps cut our carbon footprint--and lead times. The metals that give our fixtures form have a high recycled content. And being in LA means the fabled California sunshine lets us harvest a significant amount of daylight. A lighting factory that conserves electricity? That’s Prudential.

3. Energy. Advancing LED optics are improving the energy-efficiency of our luminaires at a remarkable rate. More than 40 of our fixtures have configurations that operate at efficiency levels of 80% or above. And many of our fixtures now offer integrated controls like occupancy sensors that drastically cut energy consumption.

4. Social. We believe in giving back to the community we come from. It’s what has guided the actions of our family-owned, woman-owned business for 60 years. Giving back is why we’re an American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Provider, why we’re members of the U.S. Green Building Council and why

we support local non-profits like Dress for Success, the Los Angeles School Police Association, Habitat for Humanity, Ace Mentor, Los Angeles, the Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Amigos de los Ninos, American Heart Association and Heal the Bay. We also donate fixtures to schools as well as computers.

5. Recycle. Reduce, re-use, recycle--that’s our mantra. Our lean manufacturing process reduces waste both of materials and energy. We recycle all of our steel, aluminum, copper, corrugated cardboard and acrylic. The packaging we use to ship our fixtures comes from recycled materials too.

Our lowest-profile asymmetric indirect cove system, P45i is designed for one or two lamp rows. Explicitly created for concealed cove applications or surface mounted as a finished wall fixture, this luminaire has a formed aluminum specular reflector that throws light forward at a very low angle cutting ceiling brightness above the fixture. A high-performance fluorescent cove luminaire, SuperCove bathes ceilings in an even wash of light with a precisely designed and engineered specular aluminum reflector that throws light at very low angles. A galvanized steel bottom reflector directs and diffuses light on ceilings to eliminate striations while limiting uplight. A diffuse white back-light reflector fills cove cavity with illumination, minimizing socket shadows.

CASE STUDY

CSUN REC CENTER IN THE LEED Education and excellence shine at the California State University, Northridge Recreation Center. Weighing in at 138,000 square feet and a budget of $70 million, the complex houses activities as diverse as rumba, swimming, floor hockey, rock climbing, volleyball, boxing and yoga. In addition, it features indoor gyms, a weight room, workout studios, an indoor track and two outdoor pools. Opened in Winter 2012, the building has an exterior metal skeleton that contrasts with its striking glass panels, creating a folded profile. Clearly, this facility utilizes all the latest materials and techniques of sustainable design, nothing less than LEED Gold-level certification. In fact, workouts on the exercise machines are being used to “keep the lights on,” transferring the power generated into the university’s electrical grid. Irvine, California-based green planning and design firm LPA has already won many awards for their unique design, including one from the AIA. The lighting designer was Kaitlin LeSage Crawford from STUDIOK1. Because the building uses numerous sustainable features including natural daylight in the usable spaces, photometric calculations were used to determine which Prudential Lighting products to place where. Crawford ultimately chose the Snap, a low-profile architectural wrap and one of the company’s most popular and biggest-selling fixtures. “They [the design team] took the time to educate the students about what we’re building and what we’re trying to create here,” said CSU Northridge University Student Union Executive Director Debra Hammond. Here’s hoping the new recreation center inspires a lot of fit new architecture students coming out of CSUN.

THE NORTH FACE The new North Face headquarters is the embodiment of the company’s ethos, passion and commitment to the outdoors. San Francisco-based interior designer Rapt Studio, the designer of the company’s headquarters 11 years ago, was tapped again to imagine an interior space in conceptual harmony with the outdoor retailing giant’s message and culture. Guided by the explicit goals to create a work environment mirroring the company’s dedication to outdoor preservation and environmental responsibility, Rapt Studio created a stunning modern, clean, crisp aesthetic space using natural materials. Ample, open windows allow natural daylight to fill interior spaces. The project had strict LEED Gold standards so Rapt Studio selected Prudential Ltg.’s slender strip of a light, the Strand with a perforated diffuser. “We wanted lighting to be minimal with little or no ornamentation while accommodating several lighting needs,” said the project’s design principal, David Galullo. “The Strand was an easy fit into our LEED objectives, our very tight construction budget and it is appropriate to the design.” Prudential’s P43, a 4" wide recessed, crisp, sleek linear fixture, is also featured in the design. The project is expected to receive a LEED Gold designation. The North Face headquarters, a subsidiary of VF Corporation, is situated on VF Outdoor Campus headquarters’ 14-acre campus in Alameda along with JanSport and Lucy. The campus generates 100 percent of its anticipated electricity needs via wind turbines and solar panels and features electric car charging stations. Rapt Studio designed all 160,000 sq. feet of the campus’s interior space.

USC’S ALL-SPORTS BUILDING: JOHN MCKAY CENTER Named for USC’s legendary football coach and unveiled in August 2012, USC’s new McKay Center is a breathtaking $70 million, 110,000 square-foot, self-contained state-of-the-art facility. The explicit mission of Los Angeles-based RA-DA was to design the McKay Center’s interiors as a clean, modern complement to the exterior’s collegiateRomanesque Revival architecture. The interior space had to communicate USC’s rich history athletically and academically while meeting the practical purpose of serving and supporting the needs of the school’s 600 student-athletes competing in 21 sports. “Despite its regal qualities, we wanted the spaces and interiors of the McKay Center to be somehow youthful and energetic,” said Rania Alomar, principal at RA-DA in charge of the John McKay Center’s interior design. The basement is the Center’s biggest floor at 60,000-square feet, housing a 40-yard-by-30-yard turf field, the football locker rooms, a nutrition center, hydrotherapy pools and an expanded sports performance and recovery area. Alomar wanted the light to speak the language of athletes, trainers and coaches, effectively communicating the feel of high-powered sport and physicality: vibrant, energetic and dynamic. In the corridors leading into the strength and conditioning training area on the lower level, RA-DA placed Prudential Ltg.’s P62, creating repeating lines of light.

“We used the P62 in this staccato manner, marching down the corridors, sort of going boom, boom, boom, down it,” said Alomar, who added that she used the P63 in other parts of the interior. “It creates this punctuated rhythm of light down the corridors. We use them in this graphic way. We are not glorifying the fixture. We are integrating the light into the design. It is part of the design. The light contributes to it.”

“These are really simple fixtures that achieve exactly what we wanted…this continuous line of light. It’s not the fixture that is getting all the attention, it’s the light.”

“...regal…yet youthful and energetic” Lack of ambient light was Alomar’s greatest challenge. “We did not want it to feel like a basement,” says Alomar, who used the P59, Prudential’s Ltg.’s versatile cove fixture in all the Center’s restrooms and in the basement shower rooms. “We used a lot of the P59 light coves. It is a great fixture because it achieves what you want in a light cove which is: it throws the light really even down onto the surface and it is not visible to the eye. Wherever appropriate, we used indirect lighting and coves to add a general sense of lightness without visible fixtures, raising the overall ambient light in the space.” The McKay Center’s ground floor is dedicated entirely to academic services including computer labs. Los Angeles-based project architect HTNB selected Prudential Ltg.’s P63 for the labs. The narrow, modular recessed P63 served the dual purposes of design continuity and function in the lab where computer screens require an even light for visual comfort.

Architects Brandon Dake and Andrew Wells of Dake Wells Architecture in Springfield, MO collaborated with electrical engineer Devin Conway, acoustician Bruce Moore, and daylighting advisor Jason Hainline to make their solution work: a single 11,600-sq.-ft. structure plus an additional 5,400 sq. ft. in an existing building to achieve both operational and aesthetic goals. The sculptural ceiling plays the key role in the scheme: it unifies the new and existing structures, provides acoustic panels, and integrates lighting and daylighting for the new space. According to Dake, the complete system is kind of like a sushi roll: the wood wrapper helps reflect sound, while the acoustic panels act as rice “absorbing the sound.” “Our basic approach to lighting the space,” says architect Wells, “was to make the most effective use of daylight.” The team opened the east and west ends with large expanses of frosted glass, and added four 32" X 96" skylights. Randomly-placed 6" x 4’ Prudential P63 recessed fixtures are the size and scale the designers wanted to accentuate the visual interest of the wood ceiling. The dimmable fixtures, using 32W T8 lamps, have high impact-resistant acrylic lenses and integrated emergency ballasts. On overcast days, Conway recorded 55 fc (foot candles) in the main assembly space, rising to 120 on bright days. Conway pointed out that the space has achieved its designed power density of 1.1 watts per sq. ft. A photocell was installed for overall control of the indirect lighting based on natural light available in the space.

GLOSSARY Aperture The diameter in the opening of a downlight, in inches (in.). Sometimes manufacturers will round up to the next whole-inch increment.

Ballast A device required by electricdischarge light sources such as fluorescent or HID lamps to regulate voltage and current supplied to the lamp during start and throughout operation. Candela The Systeme International d’Unities (SI) of luminous intensity. One candela is one lumen per steradian. Formerly, candle. Cutoff angle The angle of light distribution from a luminaire, measured upward from nadir, between the vertical axis and the first line at which the bare source (lamp) is not visible. Direct luminaire A luminaire that emits light in the general direction of the task to be illuminated. The term usually refers to luminaires that emit light in a downward direction.

Driver For light emitting diodes, a device that regulates the voltage and current powering the source. Efficacy The ratio of light output (in lumens) to input power (in watts), expressed aslumens per watt (LPW). ALSO: The ratio of the light output of a lamp (lumens) to its active power (watts), expressed as lumens per watt. Field of view The area covered by an occupancy sensor, often reported (for wall-mounted sensors) as a horizontal field of view or (for ceiling-mounted sensors) as the solid angle of the cone-shaped coverage area. Fixture A complete lighting unit consisting of lamp or lamps and the parts designed to distribute the light, position and protect the lamp(s), and connect the lamp(s) to the power supply. (Also referred to as luminaire.) Footcandle (fc) A measure of illuminance in lumens per square foot. One footcandle

equals 10.76 lux, although for convenience 10 lux commonly is used as the equivalent. Heat sinking Adding a material, usually metal, adjacent to an object in order to cool it through conduction. Indirect lighting Light arriving at a surface after reflecting from one or more surfaces (usually walls and/or ceilings) that are not part of the luminaire. Kelvin Color temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin, which indicathe hue of a specific type of light source. Higher temperatures indicate whiter, “cooler" colors, while lower temperatures indicate yellower, “warmer" colors. Louver A fixed shield, usually divided into small cells, that is attached to the face of a luminaire to reduce direct glare. Lumen (lm) A unit measurement of the rate

at which a lamp produces light. A lamp’s light output rating expresses the total amount of light emitted in all directions per unit time. Ratings of initial light output provided by manufacturers express the total light output after 100 hours of operation. Luminance The photometric quantity most closely associated with the perception of brightness, measured in units of luminous intensity (candelas) per unit area (square feet or square meter). Lux (lx) A measure of illuminance in lumens per square meter. One lux equals 0.093 footcandle. Nadir In the lighting discipline, nadir is the angle pointing directly downward from the luminaire, or 0°. Nadir is opposite the zenith. PN junction For light emitting diodes, the portion of the device where positive and negative charges combine to produce light.

Prismatic lens An optical component of a luminaire that is used to distribute the emitted light. It is usually a sheet of plastic with a pattern of pyramid-shaped refracting prisms on one side. Most ceiling-mounted luminaires in commercial buildings use prismatic lenses. Reflectance A measure of the ability of an object to reflect or absorb light, expressed as a unitless value between 0 and 1. A perfectly dark object has a reflectance of 0, and a perfectly white object has a reflectance of 1. Shielding Blocking an electric or magnetic field with a metallic substance. The incident field induces currents in the metallic substance, and these currents induce a field that opposes the incident field. Shielding reduces radiated electromagnetic waves. Electronic components, wires, lamps, and devices can all be shielded. Specular reflection Light incident on a surface

that is redirected at the specular angle. Glossy or shiny surfaces exhibit a high degree of specular reflection. Supply voltage The voltage, usually direct, applied by an external source to the circuit of an electrode. Uplight Light directed upward at greater than 90° above nadir. The source of uplight can be from a combination of direct uplight and reflected light. Wall-washing The practice of illuminating vertical surfaces, such as walls. Wall-washer luminaries are designed to illuminate vertical surfaces. Zenith In the lighting discipline, zenith is the angle pointing directly upward from the luminaire, or 180°. Zenith is opposite nadir. In astronomical usage, zenith is the highest point in the sky, directly above the observation point.
