Art Deco is in This Season This season we are embracing the Deco vibe. Richer tones of greys, warm golds, and bronze, mixed with accents of steel blue, charcoal or black, inspire a slightly more glamorous feel; paired with textures that evoke softness and warmth, keeping it from feeling too precious and making it inviting.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Napping to NAPKINS As we were shaping this issue, with a focus on entertaining, I spent several weekends luxuriating in the art of doing nothing. My most taxing Sunday activity was deciding between sleeping in and binge-watching shows. Monday through Friday, the editors and I were bantering about the merits of plate chargers, reviewing pics of high-gloss butler’s pantries and exchanging secrets for throwing fabulous dinner parties. Meanwhile, on the weekend, I was idling away. It was a short run…

PORTRAIT: LAURA BARISONZI.

One Saturday, after lingering in my pajamas well past 11 a.m., on a whim, I invited friends over for cocktails and supper. Apparently the epic “to-place-card-or-not” editor debate that week had knocked me out of my lull. I ran to the market and picked up loads of dahlias, branzino, Japanese sweet potatoes and asparagus. Friends were tasked with bringing appetizers and dessert, affording me time to iron our vintage tablecloth, polish the Georg Jensen silverware and set the table with my favorite Pillivuyt Perle dinnerware. Place cards were swapped for individual handwritten inspiration notes at each seat. Much popping of wine corks, lively conversation and dancing ensued. It was as pleasurable as a midday bubble bath followed by a proper nap. Entertaining, for me, releases the same endorphins as, well, loafing. I encourage all of you to carve out “nothing time” this holiday season; all the better to enjoy the revelry that surely will follow.

WEDGWOOD TAPS CERAMICIST HITOMI HOSONO FOR ITS FIRST-EVER ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

en years ago, when Japanese ceramicist Hitomi Hosono was an intern at the Wedgwood factory in Staffordshire, England, she would happily while away hours in the company’s archives looking at old molds, or sprigs, as they are called. A nature lover at heart, she was particularly drawn to the botanical ones with imprints of delicate leaves and petals, resembling long-lost fossils. “I was always fascinated by organic forms: the veins of a leaf, the shape of its edges and the layering of a flower’s petals,” says Hosono. Those sprigs left an impression, for her ceramic explorations over the next decade took on rich, plant-like textures inspired by many of the motifs she encountered. It’s a thoroughly fitting twist, then, that she’s returned to the place where it all started as Wedgwood’s inaugural artist-in-residence, the first such program in the company’s 250-year history. “There was always a synergy between what we wanted as a brand and what Hitomi was doing independently,” says Dik Delaney, global design director for Wedgwood. “The artisan program is about driving innovation back into the Wedgwood brand through pushing the creative boundaries of the painters and craftspeople at the factories.” Hosono’s vision certainly succeeds on that front: Her pieces incorporate new techniques of raised ornamentation, intricate layering and delicate carving, even piercing holes in the clay. The end result honors the Wedgwood tradition while moving the brand’s jasperware in a fresh direction. Invented by Josiah Wedgwood in 1774, the unglazed vitreous stoneware takes its name from jasper, the natural stone it resembles. Over the years, the pottery has been made in many colors, but is most recognized worldwide for its Wedgwood blue pieces, which are adorned with hand-applied bas-relief scenes of neoclassical

or botanical motifs. For this limited-edition collection, Hosono tweaked the color palette, opting for pastel washes that conjure wagashi, the elaborate confections served in Japanese tea houses. She even reinvented one of the brand’s most iconic pieces, the Portland vase, keeping the Grecian urn form but trading in the traditional blue color and frolicking nymphs for a cheerful aqua hue embellished with fern fronds. Prunus leaves, chrysanthemums and daisies

climb, float and sway on the surface of the other pieces. “Naturally, I was drawn to the shapes of flowers and plants I knew from my childhood in Japan,” says Hosono, who grew up in an area she describes as the Stoke-on-Trent of Japan, a region known for its pottery trade. It’s no wonder she gravitated toward those 100-year-old sprigs in the Wedgwood archives. “The details of the molds reflect a great respect for nature; I wanted these pieces to honor that,” she says.

FEAST IN RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD, MAXIMALIST INTERIORS ARE OUTSHINING THE ARTFULLY PLATED DISHES, PROVING THAT WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN, MORE IS INDEED MORE.

Whether you dine out on the regular or just do a quick scroll through culinary destinations on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed that restaurants aren’t the austere, minimalist temples of cuisine they used to be. Gone are the neutral palettes and quiet finishes that telegraphed seriousness and placed the focus on the food. In recent years, designers have taken an I’ll-haveeverything-on-the-menu approach to restaurant interiors that reflects a greater trend toward maximalism. Both Martin Brudnizki’s lavish revamp of Annabel’s private club in Mayfair, and the Glade at Sketch London represent the movement at its full-tilt, over-the-top best. Artist, designer and photographer Carolyn Quartermaine says she was given carte blanche to create the surreal, Technicolor forest interior at the Glade. “The design encourages the eye to weave in and out, never settling, and this allows the mind to dream,” she says. “For us, it’s more installation than decoration.” Designers on these shores are taking a subtler, but no less ornamental approach. For the Pink Cabana at the Sands Hotel in Indian Wells, California, Martyn Lawrence Bullard combined a mélange of Moroccan, midcentury and preppy motifs to create an eclectic,

old-school country-club vibe. Conjuring a sense of place through layering is essential to Bullard’s process. “It’s about escapism. You’re creating a fantasy you wouldn’t necessarily experience anywhere else, so there’s not only a memory of the food, but also the memory of the environment,” he says. Los Angeles-based designer Matt Winter shares a similar ideology: “Life is hard— sometimes you need to hit pause, get out of your headspace and enjoy your surroundings for a little while, and the best design accomplishes that,” he says. One of his recent projects, the tiki-themed Lono in Hollywood, is a mash-up of South Pacific and French Colonial influences that leaves almost no surface in the bar area unadorned. Designer Daniel Alonso of the Bonhomme Hospitality Group took a similar tack when concepting the Chicago boite Beatnik, which mixes Moorish, Mediterranean and Balinese elements in an ornate setting indicative of its bohemian theme. “I think people today gravitate toward places that evoke a sense of history,” says Winter. “A lot of major hospitality groups are using designers who understand layering, and create spaces that are unique, and feel rich and lived in. It’s an antidote to the white glass boxes of the past,” he says. “Minimalist interiors can sometimes feel homogenous,” says Bullard. “A space could read the same in London, Paris, New York or Palm Springs.” By contrast, maximalist design

ith a background creating sculptural pieces and ceramics, it is no surprise that David Kaihoi would look to the interior design world for his next artistic pursuit. After moving to New York City more than 10 years ago and installing fine art pieces for interior designers, such as Miles Redd, Kaihoi’s passion for the creative expanded into a full-fledged love affair with decorating. Here, Luxe gets the scoop on the artistic inspiration behind his latest collaboration with luxury floor coverings manufacturer Patterson Flynn Martin. It’s not every day that you see metal used as a rug material. Tell us about this collection and how your art inspired it. Similar to my artwork, where I have a penchant for mixing materials, I set out on this journey not knowing where it would end up. Instead of working with pattern, I added metal plates, which was a departure for Patterson Flynn Martin, and the result is a multifunctional modern tapestry of sorts. The juxtaposing tactile combination of mediums as a decorative gesture is extremely interesting and highly unexpected. We love the interplay of neutral tones and textures. The materials are as raw and simple as they can be. Both the wool yarn—which was so fresh that it smelled like a country barn—and unfinished metal are as elemental as you can get, so there is a certain kind of purity to the pieces that I wanted to maintain. Not a single dye, paint or synthetic adornment was used, and that simplicity makes it approachable. What influenced the

collection’s battle-like names, such as Highly Decorated and Breastplate? While I wasn’t beholden to designing anything traditional, this creation, for me, was grounded in historical precedent relating to suits of armor. The Arms and Armor section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is fascinating and showcases intricate metalwork on top of woven garments, so I was trying to achieve that exquisite blend of materials with a contemporary sensibility. Favorite piece? I appreciate them all, however I love Matriarch (shown above), because

there is something appealing and powerful, yet soft about it too. It has a beautiful, strong soul that is so inviting; you’re drawn to touch it and experience its comfortability. How do the worlds of art and interior design relate to one another? The best part of being an artist is experimentation and the pursuit of the unknown. And alternatively, as a designer, it’s about creating with a real purpose in mind. Together, they offer the opportunity to make something new that’s inspirational with a personal, original perspective.

WRITTEN BY COLLEEN MCTIERNAN

For more than 30 years, architect Charles R. Stinson has imagined homes that emphasize harmony within nature. With a style influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, his work celebrates the balance between the shelter of indoor spaces and the freedom of the outdoors. In his latest book, Connections, Stinson shares the stories of 15 projects and each client’s journey to achieve the ideal living space. charlesrstinson.com What was the inspiration behind Connections? My wife, Carol, noticed a connection among our clients. Most of them are self-made entrepreneurs, so they look beyond the obvious and conventional. They have faith in unseen potential and are able to put energy and resources toward ideas and concepts. These homeowners share an approach to life that makes their stories, and homes, so interesting. How does the sense of place shape your architecture? Every project starts with spending time on the property at different times of day. Then I start defining spaces, keeping in mind nature, the views and the variance of natural light from sunrise to sunset and in different seasons. I make sure every room has sunlight, but that there is still a sense of shelter in the home. I also incorporate clerestory windows and hidden drapery pockets for privacy. There’s something great about being able to go into a different environment and celebrate that area. I try to use local materials, so if trees have to come down on-site, we’ll lumber them and use the wood as flooring. How did your interest in art lead you to architecture? Growing up, I thought I was going to be an artist. Then, in high school I took architecture classes and appreciated the technical side of it. Architecture was a way to create functional art. Today, art still influences my work—all my designs start by hand on a wooden drawing board I got when I was 14. 108 / LUXESOURCE.COM

“Interest among curators and collectors in the untold histories of American art is refreshing, as artists who have been excluded from consideration are being reconsidered. Next up is a grand opening of our new gallery space in February. We’ll be showing paintings by Karl Wirsum and Caragh Thuring, and introducing vintage works by AfricanAmerican artist Emilio Cruz.”

“Artist Sheila Hicks always has my eye; her work is so engaging. There are so many female artists who deserve expanded recognition for their work. With my gallery’s reopening this year, I’ve made an effort to feature artists such as Alicia LaChance and Joanne Mattera. Martina Nehrling is another exceptional painter—she has an immaculate eye.”

“I see a lot of work surrounding identity. Race, body image and futurism still strongly support the current conversations occurring through visual art, music and fashion. Creatives are realizing they have the power and are standing in that power. This is a common trend being expressed in the individual and social conversations I’ve been witnessing.”

“What stands out to me are bold individual expressions. Lately, we’ve been looking at artists working with performance. I’ve been especially interested in Adam Linder and how his work brings dance and choreography into the gallery. I’m also excited to be working on exhibitions with Croatian artist David Maljković and Canadian artist Liz Magor.”

“I find Kerry James Marshall’s work to be so strong. In my opinion, he is the greatest living painter of our age. The works of Banksy and Shepard Fairey also catch my eye. Coming up, I’m planning a new portfolio of Wild West images and an expansion into Madrid, Toronto, Paris and Palm Beach. We’re also planning the celebration of Mars Gallery’s 30 th anniversary.”

DESIGN CHAT AMY KARTHEISER

It was while decorating her own condo with her mother that Amy Kartheiser had a revelation to switch gears and follow her dreams: She left her sales job and pursued a career in interior design. Today, she has her own thriving firm with a staff of five, a new office in Evanston and home projects across the country. She also regularly traverses the globe for furniture and accent pieces for pop-up shops she holds twice a year (her next one is November 15-18, benefiting the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, a charity close to her heart). domed building in Lincoln Park. It’s one of the most gorgeous interior spaces in the city. What’s your take on the city’s design scene? Chicago is home to a very strong creative, courageous and collaborative design scene (say that three times fast!). I’m amazed at the level of design from our local community of artists, architects, builders, designers and more. The welltraveled shop owners in this city are out of this world, too. You’re guaranteed to add whimsy or sophistication to any space by sourcing them. Tell us some of your favorite local spots for inspiration. This sounds cliché, but inspiration is everywhere in Chicago. I never grow tired of just walking around this city and seeing what’s new.

INDUSTRY FIRSTS: WHY FLEETWOOD IS FOREMOST

THE MARK OF THE MAKER

FLEETWOOD WINDOWS & DOORS

1980s: Fleetwood designed the first luxury residential multi-slide door. Early 2000s: Fleetwood designed the first 3-inch tandem sliding door roller. Since then, the design has been copied on a wide scale. 2010s: Fleetwood earned patents for its Archetype hardware, followed by dozens of designs of additional proprietary hardware components.

1

2015: Fleetwood designed the first luxury residential flush sill, high-performing, selfcontained subterranean drainage system for sliding doors, known as the Sub-Sillpan. 2018: Fleetwood brought the Series 4070-T to market with the first luxury residential flush sill with certified water performance and inset finished flooring. In 2019 + Beyond: Fleetwood is introducing the first luxury residential water performing pivot door.

“

Our milestones, several patents, and impressive selection of proprietary designs speak to the close control, attention to detail, and demand for excellence that exemplifies our approach to design.

In 1961, Fleetwood was established with the purpose of making the industry’s best sliding door in Southern California. Fait accompli for the innovative company, known for its highly customized, elegantly engineered, beautiful windows and doors that last a lifetime. Devoted solely to the luxury home market, Fleetwood lives and works by two credos: “build it better, not cheaper” and “always innovative, often imitated.” With these in mind, the Fleetwood team works hand in hand with the architectural community, responding to their wants and needs for clients with groundbreaking, midcentury modern designs that blur the line between inside and out, perfectly. “Once we have taken on a design or development, our creative process entails expansive collaboration across all major departments within the company,” Chief Operations Officer Mark McCoy says. “It’s this type of collaboration that encourages a culture of idea sharing; something that is vital to our ability to engineer the very best products.” Set to release four new products over the next few months, with plans to release an additional one to two products per year, Fleetwood continues its trajectory of success. 2

THE MARK OF THE MAKER

LUTRON ELECTRONICS At Lutron, innovation is at its core. In the late 1950s, inventor, entrepreneur and business magnate Joel Spira forever changed the lighting control industry with his innovative, modern, electronic, solid-state dimmer—altering the way people look at light. This humble device was deceptively simple … and it was beautiful. For Lutron, this solid-state dimmer established a legacy of scientific prowess and design distinction, earning both admiration and trust. Beautifully curated lighting scenes require more than just control of electric light, so in 1993, Lutron entered the automated window covering industry, transforming expectations with the ultra-quiet, high-performance shade. Today, more than 55 years later, Lutron delivers beautiful, industry-leading lighting, shades, and temperature control solutions for the home. Enter Palladiom, an entirely new design collection of keypads and shades, one that redefines the norms of technology, craftsmanship and style—all hallmarks of Lutron’s years of innovation. In the creation of Palladiom, Lutron demanded no less than rethinking the engineering process, inventing new tools, new treatments, and insisting on higher standards of quality. As a result, Lutron challenged its entire supply chain, and the company, giving rise to a line of picture-perfect devices to fine-tune any environment.

WHERE HANDCRAFTSMANSHIP MEETS HIGH-TECH DESIGN Lutron takes great pride in innovation, with product design and user experience being top of mind. For many Lutron products, this keen attention to detail requires precision and handcrafted finishes. One example is the company’s beautiful new Palladiom keypads and shade brackets, which are hand-finished to ensure a delicate and uniform texture. Additionally, Lutron’s custom shading solutions are manufactured entirely by hand, with experts meticulously inspecting all shades before being shipped to customers. Materials make the difference in Lutron’s products, too. The Palladiom shade brackets, for example, are meticulously hand-finished and robust enough to support a 12-by-12-foot shade with a remarkably slim 3-inch profile. Additionally, Lutron collaborates with the world’s leading textile mills to provide fabrics for all shade styles, giving customers high-performance shades that accentuate any decor.

THE MARK OF THE MAKER

VITROCSA For window and door innovator, Vitrocsa, it’s all about the view … opening up spaces and bringing as much light as possible into the structure. The inventor of the first sliding door system (still the most installed product in the world), Vitrocsa continues to make a name for itself with frameless window designs that boast the narrowest sightline barriers in the world. It’s a feat accomplished by inventor and Vitrocsa founder, Eric Joray, who lives and works by the credo, “Never do anything that others know how to do.” Taking an artisan approach, Joray applies his watchmaking experience to every design, relying on his dedicated and motivated staff to bring his creations to life. “They live and breathe Vitrocsa products as if they were their own,” he says. “The fact that these successes are a collective effort, but still allow for individual autonomy, ensures that everyone feels they are personal successes.” While some inventions develop from the improvement of existing products, others evolve as a solution to an architectural need. Take British architect Norman Foster, who wanted to be able to open up the windows on a terrace so that the leaves were concealed. Vitrocsa responded by custom-developing the Turnable Corner system, which has become one of its flagship products. “Our systems are the product of unrivaled expertise and a constant quest for innovation, enabling us to meet the most ambitious architectural visions,” Joray says.

We constantly innovate; we have patents; we always imagine new solutions. It is an engine and what sets us apart from competitors. We have years of experience that some have yet to acquire, and Swiss knowhow that is our strength.

Foxfire, the bucolic 127-acre farm in the rolling hills of Maryland’s Harford County, holds a special place in Steven Gambrel’s design portfolio: It happens to belong to his best friends. It’s also a residence the designer frequents in the fall and winter months when the region partakes in traditional equestrian events and festivities making this an ideal spot for hosting get-togethers. Because this kitchen is a true workhorse in every sense of the word and one of the most heavily used areas of the home, Gambrel made sure to prioritize both form and function. The New York-based interior designer is a true master when it comes to creating beautiful, elegant and layered kitchens. This space, which was completely gutted and reimagined, is no different. srgambrel.com; foxfiremonkton.com Where did you begin when designing this kitchen? First, I surveyed the space and determined that we needed to significantly renovate it. The day begins and ends in this kitchen, and the morning light is particularly beautiful here. So, I thought about where the sunlight is best and this is where I positioned the sink. From there, I looked at the functionality of the room which, in this case, is to serve, so I wanted to make sure dishes and glasses could be seen and accessed quickly and easily. Eliminating upper cabinets helps aesthetically with the airiness of the space, but it also makes the function of it immediately apparent because everything is visible. Tell us about your approach to texture. The clients were looking for more neutral interiors; it was fun to rethink this kitchen in terms of texture instead of color. I love big, thick stone, so I put the countertops through a heating process called sweating that makes the surface beautifully uneven but still smooth and creates a patina of sorts. The cabinets are cyrus oak, which has a gorgeous finish but is very durable. I’m always thinking about materials that will be the easiest to live with and use. How is the adjoining storage room used? This area holds the silver and decorative dishes for serving in the formal dining room—we allude to this space as the servery. Food is also laid out here for more casual evenings, but many nights center around big dinners and having friends over in the dining room. I transformed this smaller space into a pretty open room that has a very calming spirit, especially with the silver wall.

“We wanted to make this space feel lush for welcoming guests,” says Terrain’s art director Laura Harris Twilley of this Monkton, Maryland kitchen designed by Steven Gambrel. To do so, she populated the table with amaryllis bulbs, paperwhites and topiaries. A garland intertwined with eucalyptus and china berries surrounds the tableau and the Vulcan range is original to the house. Previous page: The rustic roots of Norfolk pines are exposed on the kitchen counter in simple glass vessels for a dramatic display.

In keeping with the light and airy feeling of the dining nook, Terrain used chartreuse lemon cypress topiaries mixed with clump moss, hypericum berries and pine straw in a trough planter on the table while a variegated vine wraps around the pendant light. Chairs by Mrs. Howard frame the custom banquette seating.

Building drama, setting a mood, making disparate elements work together so the end result looks effortless: Throwing a successful party sounds a lot like great interior design. To celebrate the season, Luxe rounded up top talents to share their ideas for welcoming spaces, memorable hosting and pitch-perfect event planning. Whether it’s seating an expert conversationalist next to a known wallflower or pairing patterned dishes with opulent linens, such as these vintageinspired ones from La Double J, it’s all about mastering the mix. The forecast is always festive with an eclectic mix of tableware and linens, such as these from La Double J. The Libellula plate, shown here, was inspired by a print found in an 1896 natural history textbook.

GREEN SCENE

For the dining room in his historic Greek Revival home in Madison, Georgia, Jimmy Stanton, proprietor of Atlanta’s Stanton Home Furnishings, created a festive mood with lush, fresh greenery and elegantly casual table settings. A custom pecky cypress and hammered-zinc table is companyready with a blend of antique black-and-white transferware, green Ralph Lauren plates, brownglass stemware and heirloom pewter pieces. A blown-glass ball chandelier and Cole & Son’s Nuvolette wallpaper make for a dreamy backdrop. It’s an inviting tableau even Stanton’s rescue Chihuahua, Chance, can’t resist. stantonhomefurnishings.com

IMPACT

A quiet cocktail corner with a petite bar table takes a dressy turn for the dramatic when a rich peacock-teal hue colors the space. Chicago-based designer Alisa Bloom used a custom high-gloss blue from Fine Paints of Europe to lacquer the walls of this Gold Coast dining room. It’s a laborious process that delivers unparalleled shine, reflecting even the subtlest candlelight for the ultimate atmospheric glow. alisab.com

SIT PRETTY

A plush and supportive perch should be mandatory for lengthy holiday meals. On that front, the velvet Caron chair delivers, bringing both softness and style to the table. Playfully patterned fabric inserts and brass nail trim add a note of whimsy, and the shapely design hugs your back so you can stay seated comfortably until the last bite of dessert is gone. ottiu.com

PAST 4 PERFECT When San Francisco-based designer Holly Hollenbeck set out to design the dining room of her 1901 Edwardian home, her goal was to preserve its vintage heritage while integrating modern touches. “Visualizing how the space was originally used was key in bringing the room back to its former life,” she says. An 11-foot-long antique English table centers the space and provides a refined setting for entertaining friends and family. To contrast with the original details such as the herringbone-patterned floor and oak wainscoting, Hollenbeck added graphic wallpaper by Kelly Wearstler for Lee Jofa, a custom-designed chandelier and Milo Baughman chairs. The result is an inviting combination of history and personality. hsh-interiors.com

5

RAISED BAR

Artisans Zelouf & Bell describe their furniture as “poetic pieces with resonance, mystery and secrets, evoking wild cocktail parties past.” Judging from the bubblegum-pink-and-brass Stones in a Pond liquor cabinet, seen here, that description seems apt—the doors open to reveal pale-blond sycamore storage with leather-lined drawers and an ivory shagreen bar top. Much of the duo’s work is one-of-a-kind, featuring luxe design details such as reflective lacquer finishes, aged brass, detailed marquetry and mother-of-pearl inlay, just to name a few. Pieces are made by hand in their workshop in Ireland, where they helm the creative process from inception to finished product. zeloufandbell.com

6

PLACES, PLEASE

Designing a stunning tablescape begins with settings that convey not only the spirit of the gathering, but also the essence of the host. Los Angeles-based Casa de Perrin knows this and has spent years curating a jaw-dropping collection of vintage china, flatware and glassware, available for purchase or rental. You can peruse options by color palette for inspiration or by specific item type, so finding the right rose-hued wine glass or patterned plate is just a click away. casadeperrin.com

French designer Dominique Imbert believes fireplaces shouldn’t be fixed to the ground, so he has devoted most of his life to creating ones that are suspended in mid-air (as in the Ergofocus, seen here). Form and function meet in this wood-burning model, which features appealing midcentury lines and an open hearth that rotates 360 degrees. Handcrafted in the South of France, Imbert’s designs have elegant shapes that actually maximize heat efficiency for chilly winter nights. focus-fireplaces.com

LUXE CAUGHT UP WITH CHRISTINE TRAULICH, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF RED BLISS DESIGN, TO GET HER TIPS FOR THROWING A SUCCESSFUL SOIRÉE. What qualities should every tabletop have? Lingerability—my friends love to hang out and tell stories over meals, so I always think about how to dress the table in a way that will stay beautiful long after the plates are cleared. I love using flat, hard-finish place mats, like the ones shown below, for this reason. And comfort is a must: Invest in great chairs. The secret to a great party is: Always use place cards. Pairing up people is key to maximizing the energy of a gathering. Any specific tricks to share? Learn one clever napkin fold or use a stunning napkin ring—it will elevate your table. redbliss.com

President of Brad Lippitz Group/Compass Real Estate, he embraces the plethora of choices available in Chicago’s luxury market: new or vintage/ prewar; single-family homes or condominiums and cooperatives; full-service with higher assessments or no-service with lower assessments; bustling locations or sleepier pocket areas. While neighborhoods like East Lakeview, West Loop and Lincoln Square are trending, timeless architecture remains the No. 1 selling point in any locale. “The intangibles should be every buyer’s priority: space, light, orientation, location, overall layout,” he advises. “Remember, any home can be personalized and marketable if and when it’s time to sell.” With a keen eye toward design, Brad teams up with architects and designers to ensure that the end product exactly meets the buyers’ needs and tastes. £ Inspired by a tortoise shell, this sculptural pavilion integrates into the newly revitalized boardwalk at the Lincoln Park Zoo. What is one thing that makes or breaks the sale of a home? How the home will fit into the buyer’s image of their potential new home. Most buyers can’t visualize a space beyond how it’s being shown or used. Sometimes it’s important to enhance the appearance and feel. You don’t have to necessarily rent new furniture; but occasionally if you rearrange or remove some pieces to showcase the size or use of a room, that often helps. Painting a room a lighter or a more neutral color makes the space feel bigger and can help the buyer visualize their own furniture in the room. Buyers want to envision what their new home will feel like—that’s a key factor in the process of selling a home.

Daughter Jayme grew up in the business, and after a 10-year stint in the advertising and marketing industry, made the switch to real estate and joined her mother in 2013. Together, they bring a combined 40-plus years of experience to the buying, selling and negotiating table. While both point to location as a constant consideration, they know the other significant factors when it comes to buying, and what to accentuate when marketing and selling a home. These factors typically include school district, a home’s footprint, the neighborhood and views. “You can renovate and make cosmetic changes, but you can’t physically move a property to a different location or floor level, or add natural light,” Slate says. THE GILLMAN GROUP – COMPASS REAL ESTATE When asked what is most critical when buying a home, brokers Sharon Gillman and Marissa Gillman Schaefer, of The Gillman Group/Compass Real Estate, ask home buyers two critical questions: “What are you willing to spend on a property?” and “What type of home do you envision your life in?” “A buyer must think with their heads as well as their hearts,” they say. “We understand that our clients want to make a sound investment, but also understand it is not always about numbers when it comes to a place a buyer will call ‘home.’” Both believe Chicago is a great city to invest in, especially given its affordability compared to markets like New York or California. “You get better value, gain square footage, and get to live in an incredible city,” Sharon says. When purchasing their own homes, Sharon and Marissa mention character and location as their determining factors—a point driven home by the trending interest in high ceilings and other details that make a property standout. “Home buyers are seeking out properties that have timeless appeal, but do not feel ‘cookie-cutter,’” Marissa says. It’s this type of insight that fuels The Gillman Group's approach—motivated, determined and strategic—navigating clients through the journey of buying and selling, and always negotiating the best deal. 312.925.2700 | gillmangroupchicago.com

£ The Hinsdale area offers many types of properties, from estate homes on large lots, to quaint in-town houses, to new construction— all nestled in a terrific community that has so much to offer. What factors do you consider when choosing your own home? I look at where we live most in our house, what our basic needs are and how our family functions.

What is one thing that makes or breaks the sale of a home? Inspection items! Buyers expect older homes to be ‘brand new,’ so sellers should inspect their homes and update mechanicals, roofs, appliances, and remediate any mold issues before coming to market.

How do you think your clients would characterize you? I think they would say that I am not only an

Buyers are busier than ever these days, oftentimes only looking at properties on weekends and unable to revisit until the following month or two later. Urgency has waned, so the decisionmaking process is taking longer … with buyers weighing heavily on pros and cons to inform the final outcome. That’s why it’s so important to have a seasoned agent who knows the area extremely well and the backstory of the homes; someone like realtor Kris Berger, owner of Kris Berger Group-Berkshire Hathaway KoenigRubloff, who has 23 years of experience in commercial and residential real estate in and around Hinsdale, a western suburb of Chicago. “The Hinsdale area is somewhat of a bubble; we aren’t affected like other parts of the country because we are an established area with award-winning schools and close proximity to the city,” she says. When it comes to styles, Berger mentions the popularity of the white farmhouse over the past few years, but notes its slow decline in lieu of a more transitional look with a modern twist. “I love architecture and design, and connecting people to the right home,” she says. 630.975.0088 | krisberger.koenigrubloff.com

T

he project had the elements of a designer’s dream: a plum location in an iconic downtown Chicago building and a client with sparkling style (and a personality to match). Embarking on a new chapter in her life, the buyer sought a haven for herself and her two adult daughters that would accommodate her varied interests, from rescue dogs to fashion to entertaining. “She was actively seeking a place downtown so she could window shop while walking her dog and also where she could host friends,” says architect and designer Joan Craig, who happens to be the client’s longtime friend. “She called me one day and said, ‘I think I’ve found it.’” And found it she had. But the style of the sprawling space didn’t fit the client’s vision. So she enlisted Craig—along with designers Gemma

Parker, Amanda Flood, Annelise Nielsen and architect Erich Wefing—to transform it. Although the apartment needed a cosmetic makeover (“There was an inverted cove light in the entry hall that looked like a flying saucer,” says Craig), it did have strong bones and the perfect layout. Two separate bedroom wings, each with its own entrance, meant the owner’s daughters could share the space with their mother during their frequent visits while simultaneously enjoying a sense of privacy. The main objective for the design overhaul? Shine, shine and more shine. “The client asked for a home that would be reflective, with lots of mirrors, shimmer, silver and pale colors,” recalls Craig. “With windows facing all four directions, many overlooking the lake, the apartment is naturally bright—but she wanted more.”

Victoria & Son in New York City and restored by Armand Lee & Company. The Magni coffee table is from Jean de Merry. Craig called in builder Richard Green to help make the space feel even brighter and happier. The residence in its original state was, according to Green, “generic, with no real personality.” After the renovation, which involved recreating the entry hall, redoing the closets, upgrading the finishes, altering the bathrooms and painting the cabinetry, he says, “It became much more dynamic and really depicts the client’s way of life and sense of style.” To achieve maximum shine, Craig used polished stone, high-gloss paint, black lacquer, silver cork and antiquemirrored walls throughout. She kept to a mostly neutral palette in order to maintain balance, pulling from the panoramic views of lake and sky and enveloping the home in shades of sand, cream, champagne, pale blue and

yellow. For the decor and detailing, Craig drew inspiration from both the building’s decadent Art Deco sensibility and her client’s personality. “Part of it is portraiture,” she explains. “My client is super elegant, but also effervescent and just sunny. She likes to have a good time, and I wanted to capture that spirit.” While that élan is apparent throughout the home—through flashes of metallic embroidery, dazzling light fixtures and polished marble surfaces—nowhere is it more evident than in the dining room. “We wanted that room to be very bright during the day and to gleam in the candlelight by night,” says Craig, who paneled one wall in large-scale bricks of antique mirror and covered the rest of the room in silver cork paper to enhance the glimmer of light on all four wall surfaces.

Opposite: The kitchen is a study in contrasts, with a honed granite countertop, white cabinetry and black-and-white marble-tiled floors. The Dessin Fournir stools are upholstered in a Holly Hunt fabric. Below: Craig created drama in the family room between floors of polished-white Thassos and Absolute Black granite, punctuated with pops of yellow. The room also includes a Formations armchair, a Jayson Home side table and a custom Tai Ping rug. On the wall between the windows hangs From Here to There by artist Frank Wimberley.

In the master bath, which is outfitted in Iceberg quartzite and Thassos marble, Craig installed mirrored walls so the client could enjoy a 360-degree view. Exclusive Woodworking installed the cabinetry.

Similarly, the powder room has a sumptuous jewelbox vibe inspired by the galaxy. “We wanted to evoke a feeling of the infinite,” explains Craig. The room was built around an unexpected find—a stunning slab, black with a sprinkling of silver and stars resembling the Milky Way, which Craig and her client stumbled across at a stone yard. “Going to the stone yard is like going to the market on the morning of a dinner party,” she says. “You go expecting to find the most beautiful artichokes for an appetizer, but instead you see incredible ramps and asparagus and wind up doing something totally different.” Green and his team had to remove the walls

in order to lay down the slab as flooring, but the result was well worth it. “It’s a really sexy room,” Craig says. “When you close the door, it’s like Versailles.” To ensure she didn’t go overboard throughout with the shine, Craig paired the glistening finishes with organic fabrics, like soft wools, cashmeres and even gently worn stones. The sitting room ottoman, for example, has the appearance and feel of a giant boulder. “She loves the way it looks, and I’m really proud of it,” Craig says of the final result. “It’s so gratifying to see a client—and a friend—grow into a new home, a new life and enjoy new passions.”

INTERIOR DESIGN / MICHAEL ABRAMS, MICHAEL ABRAMS INTERIORS HOME BUILDER / SEAN FREEMAN, TWENTY 9, INC.

In the living room of this waterfront residence in Highland Park, interior designer Michael Abrams installed custom drapery by Primo Interiors to obscure awkward window placement and hide a neighboring home from view. Sofas covered in Casamance fabric and wingback chairs covered in Great Plains fabric from Holly Hunt surround a metal-and-marble table in the formal living room, all of which are from Barron Custom Furniture.

G

ood chemistry is hard to define, but the owners of a stately stucco-clad manse on a picturesque waterfront property in Highland Park felt it from the moment they first met interior designer Michael Abrams. “When he walked in, I hugged him and said, ‘Help me,’ ” the wife recalls. “There was just something about him.” Abrams’ clean, sophisticated style is what the empty nesters had envisioned since they bought the traditional home more than a decade ago. Free spirits who enjoy yachting out on the open water, they felt suffocated by its excessive architectural details: doorways with pilasters and entablatures, domed ceilings next to tray ceilings, mismatched flooring and niches galore. “Overwhelming,” is how Abrams sums it up. While they ultimately decided to work with the existing structure, the couple did begin anew in many respects. With Abrams’ help, they selected a company to stage a massive estate sale. By the closing bell, they had sold nearly every piece of furniture in the entire house, along with four fireplace mantels, all the light fixtures and even the door hardware. Once the sale was complete and the couple was happily ensconced in their pied-à-terre in the city, Abrams and builder Sean Freeman carefully deconstructed the home, stripping away moldings, filling in wall niches and replacing mismatched angled flooring with wide-planked rift-sawn white oak that leads the eye straight toward the expansive views. “Remodeling is a lot tougher than building new,” Freeman explains, noting that a number of obstacles came up during the construction, including plumbing and electrical wiring in places they did not expect to find them. “Having great homeowners and a flexible designer, we were able to overcome everything.” That includes the home’s once ubiquitous reddish-wood tones: The built-in mahogany shelving in the library just off the front entry has been painted a shade of dark navy that downplays its many moldings, and the dramatic spiral staircase in the front foyer is now a dark gray hue that feels much more modern. A fabric wallcovering with subtle stripes adorns the stairway walls and three architectural panels above a contemporary three-seat sofa at the base of the stairs. “The foyer is huge, so it required some significant furniture,” the designer says. The color palette flows into the

A silk-and-wool rug grounds a pair of neutral-toned wing chairs and matching black sofas with a glistening gold thread that plays off the silk draperies. “Elegant,” Abrams remarks. While just as sophisticated, the family room is now more subdued. A gray grass-cloth wallcovering apposes a lighttoned area rug and a sectional sofa covered in charcoal fabric. Floor-to-ceiling draperies and woven shades crisply frame the water views, which the wife loves to observe. The vistas are equally prominent from the second-floor master suite, where a custom wall installation of upholstered panels makes a grand statement behind the leather headboard without overwhelming the room. Floor-to-ceiling wool draperies form a soft backdrop for a pair of tailored bouclé-covered chairs accented by a round ottoman and

an elegant metal accent table. “These are such dramatic windows that we wanted something soothing, and the blue is quite calming,” Abrams says. Serenity was also the idea in the adjacent bathroom, where white Calacatta tile with an inlaid-tile rug replaced orange onyx floors. A floating vanity with marble countertops makes for a notably sleeker sight line than that of the original dual vanities. “We totally transformed this house, and that was very satisfying,” Abrams says. The owners often stopped in to check on the progress of the months-long project, but when the renovation was finally complete Abrams asked them to leave while he placed the furnishings. Excited does not begin to describe how they felt when they saw their new home. “I could not believe how beautiful it looked,” the wife says. “Sometimes I don’t even want to leave the house.”

I

t was a serendipitous encounter at Dose Market—the former River North curated food and fashion exchange—that led to the partnership between Heidi Joynt and Molly Kobelt. Today, the co-owners of floral atelier Field & Florist run their own flower farm, creating bouquets and arrangements for dozens of events each year while also operating a shop focused on floral and specialty home goods. “I think our first day working together at the farm we staked dahlias, because I remember sitting in the front seat of Heidi’s car with about 50 metal poles sticking out the window,” Kobelt says. “Ever since, we’ve had many long conversations while harvesting dahlias.” The women come from divergent backgrounds but share a common love of flora. Joynt first dipped her toe in the water of the floral business when she was working at the Chicago Botanic Garden. While there she began experimenting with flower boxes based on the Community Supported Agriculture veggie-box model whereby customers pay for regularly scheduled orders up-front, providing the financial backing for farmers to purchase seeds and materials for the

season ahead. “I spent 10 years working in urban agriculture and environmental education before transitioning to flower farming and design,” Joynt says. “I was interested in bringing sustainable practices to other sectors of agricultural production that weren’t receiving enough attention.” A year later, the business was thriving, so she quit her full-time job and opened Field & Florist, originally growing the blooms on a farm in Barrington. Kobelt’s path was very different. She had worked in business and marketing but wanted an escape from the dreariness of office life. “I was looking for an opportunity to get out of the city and spend time outside,” she recalls. The need for change was motivation enough to face an early wake-up call—she met Joynt on a street corner at 5:30 a.m. for their first trip up to the farm and they’ve been working together ever since. Today, Field & Florist is thriving. Joynt and Kobelt recently transitioned the business from the Barrington farm to their own Michigan farm and opened their floral boutique and design space in Wicker Park. The duo walks the line between growing what they know their clients will like and things they find interesting to introduce into the market. “The palette we work within has always been inspired and informed by what is in the field and what we have foraged,” says Joynt, who along with Kobelt spends two days each week at the farm’s fields and greenhouses cultivating flowers for clients. “When we consider what to grow, we first ask ourselves, ‘What do we want to design with? What is special?’ ” When the business partners aren’t on the farm or servicing clients, they’re hosting workshops, such as wreath-making, or brainstorming on an upcoming fragrance collaboration with a perfumer. Yet it’s the time at the farm that offers the most inspiration for the pair’s design work. “Those days are my favorite,” says Kobelt. “Seeing what is in bloom, how the flowers interact with one another in the field, finding unusual stems or unexpected varieties and pairing them with greens we’ve found sets the tone for that week’s designs.”

RUSTIC ELEMENTS AND ELEGANT TOUCHES COME TOGETHER SEAMLESSLY IN A CHICAGO PENTHOUSE. WRITTEN BY LIZ ARNOLD / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVE BURK

At the Palmolive Building in Chicago, architect Bill Massey renovated this penthouse, which interior designer Richard Menna transformed into a farmhouse-style vacation home. Woodgrain vinyl wallcovering from Area International wraps the family room, where built-in cabinetry from Vas Design and the sofa and ottomans—both Richard Menna Custom Collection and upholstered by Eli-Wyn—lend a casual feel. The rustic sconces are from CAI Designs.

M

y husband, Steve, was raised in a big city and I was raised on a farm,” says homeowner Cherie Levy. “We wanted to pull both into this project— our farmhouse in the sky.” Architect Bill Massey took their request to mean they wanted the layout of their penthouse on the 35th story of the Palmolive Building to be “a little more casual.” Working with interior designer Richard Menna for the interiors, as well as builders Howard Dardick and Adam Masters, Massey created a warm and inviting retreat for the Wisconsin-based couple—she’s a philanthropist, he’s a business executive—where elegant trim, refined furniture and resplendent lighting dress up rustic wood and honed marble.

The renovation was a complete overhaul, but for Massey, a familiar site. In the early 2000s, he worked on the conversion of the historic Art Deco landmark from an office building to a residential address. This floor, previously part of a triplex owned by actor Vince Vaughn, had been sold separately and housed only bedrooms when the Levys bought it. “The challenge was: How do we create generous family spaces and bedrooms that are suited to the owners’ needs? How do we get a kitchen in there?” says Massey. “The way Bill put together a floor plan to make the layout work was tremendous,” observes Masters. It helped that the hallway off the elevator dictated a natural flow. Massey was able to plan rooms off of it, creating a greater visual connection between the spaces by making the entries as wide as possible. In the dining room, for

The enfilade proceeding from the family room through the dining room and into the kitchen boasts millwork that was a collaboration between Massey, Menna and Tip Top Builders. Benjamin Moore’s White Dove was used throughout, and Kravet fabrics in the same colorway but various patterns bring a sense of consistency.

example, Massey wanted to be sure the fireplace played a starring role. “It was cool and seemed to fit the vibe,” he says. “We wanted to be able to appreciate it as you walk through, so we widened the opening.” The new passageways also allow Cherie to see from her office on one end through to the kitchen and take in views of Lake Shore Drive to the north, while the master suite affords a clear shot straight down Michigan Avenue. Such urban panoramas, however, do not connote a bucolic vibe. That’s where Menna came in with a vision for the interiors. “I took the bull by the horns,” he says. “I’d say it’s not so much farmhouse as a transitional background with a country French-English look. It’s more

sophisticated.” Beginning with the trims and finishes, he had the original quartersawn white-oak floors redone and installed herringbone in the entry to reference the look of the flooring in the dining room. Wood throughout is rustic or weathered, like the kitchen island with its cerused base—fashioned to look like a picnic table—and the wire-brushed farm table in the dining room. While the family room features embossed vinyl wallcovering that resembles barn siding, Menna and Massey planned paneling for most of the other walls. “We looked at simple profiles to put onto the surfaces,” says Massey. “So you didn’t have to do wallcoverings or go crazy with art—just break down wall surfaces.”

Boasting views of Lake Michigan, the dining room is both rustic and sophisticated with its deAurora farmhouse table, elegant Century chairs, and Dennis & Leen sconces and chandelier. The custom fire surround is by Materials Marketing, and the accessories are the wife’s personal touch.

One of Cherie’s requests was to keep the decor and the palette simple. “I found a color from Kravet that I love,” Menna says of the pale caramel checks and stripes on white linen, cotton and silk. “They had a stripe, a mini stripe, a check—we used it everywhere.” Those warm tones also referenced the creamy beige-and-gray marble that appears from the kitchen countertops and backsplash to the floors of the baths (and a frieze in the master bath) to the French reproduction mantel in the dining room. Even the walls are painted a soft white with gray undertones. While the materials and textiles are grounded in natural neutrals, the lighting adds a touch of glamour. Consistently styled in rusted metals and clear crystal, fixtures range from a tiered chandelier in the kitchen to a series of

sconces in the hall, which brings a decorative sequence to that paneled stretch. “The dark metal lends a nice contrast to the white walls,” says Menna. “It really makes everything pop.” The designer notes that Cherie did much of the accessorizing, adding objects such as art, pottery and occasional furnishings that she had both purchased and inherited, lending a personal touch to the project. “She did an outstanding job,” he says. Considering how their new vacation home offers the dual experience of the lake and the city, Cherie says, “We love the tranquility of being high above the city. It’s almost like being on the farm. We gravitate to either side of the house depending on our mood.” But thanks to the design, they don’t necessarily have to choose— the best of both worlds is theirs.

Imperial Danby marble from Materials Marketing decks out the feature-wall mosaic above the tub and the floor of the master bath. Mark Menna Designs created the custom cabinets.

SARAH RASKEY FINE ART

In the hands of Sarah Raskey, art becomes the crown jewel of an environment, and a healing element for the body, mind and soul. A dedicated artist and art therapist, Raskey creates mixed-media paintings, sculpture, photography and fashion pieces for the commercial, residential and hospitality markets. The resident artist at Loews Miami Beach, she boasts many works on display throughout the hotel, including a 36-foot curved and illuminated wall sculpture, custom carpeting throughout the hallways, and textile headboard walls in every one of its guest rooms. She also has several commissions in Chicago’s Kimpton Hotel Allegro and MB Steak, located in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. “I work with a wide and ever-changing list of materials that I personally source, which allows my clients abundant customization options,” Raskey says, referring to her combinations of gems and minerals, crystal, light, textiles, metal, glass, and myriad more. Holding several degrees in both art and psychology, including a master’s in art therapy, Raskey has exhibited nationally and internationally since 2002, and began her private psychotherapy practice in 2008. In 2013, she opened the doors to Sarah Raskey Fine Art Gallery, located in the West Loop. “As both an artist and art therapist, I find it mesmerizing to embrace the adventure found within trusting the process,” she says. “I am forever enchanted by the unpredictability of art-making paired with the experience of total freedom within one’s imagination and intuition.” In addition to her one-of-a-kind statement pieces and luxury art, Raskey is pursuing new fashions, textiles and lines of home accessories.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS

RDK DESIGN LTD.

After 33 years of award-winning success in the world of design, the renowned firm of Powell/ Kleinschmidt closed its doors. While Donald Powell chose to retire, Robert D. Kleinschmidt carried on, founding RDK Design Ltd. with a focus on corporate and residential interiors. Known for their contemporary and midcentury modern masterpieces, Kleinschmidt and his team take a timeless, classic approach to each design, no matter the project type: professional centers and law firms, corporations, banks, residences, and beyond. Inducted into Interior Design’s Hall of Fame, Kleinschmidt has long been recognized as an industry icon whose minimal modernism is characterized by warmth and functionality. “It all starts with the clients’ wants and needs,” he says. “This leads to project-specific challenges and design solutions. Our favorite part is seeing where the project goes based on these challenges.” While Kleinschmidt describes his clients as “those desirous of elevating their quality of life through excellence in design,” he says a willingness to go beyond the status quo ensures a rewarding design experience for all involved. “A happy client at the end of the project makes a successful project,” he says. In business for nine years, RDK Design Ltd. looks forward with exciting projects working in Chicago, and others across the country in Palm Springs, California. “The opportunity to continue to do quality work is the dream,” he says.
