EDITOR’S LETTER

ART form Our art director worked up this layout and sent it to me for approval as I was about to sit down to write my editor’s letter. The first thought that came to mind when I saw the page was that everything here was made by artisans...well, except me and Los Angeles designer and shop owner Patrick Dragonette, that is! Design is at its best when original-thinking makers and artisans are involved in the process. Just consider what’s come to life from the creatives on this page: hand-painted, recolored textiles from Brunschwig & Fils’ design director Danielle St. George; artist Wayne Pate’s Trois Blooms wallpaper for Studio Four, Silvia Furmanovich’s hand-painted earrings inspired by Indian miniatures, and Fornace Mian’s artisan-made Murano glass Chioggia flutes for Artemest. At Luxe, we champion those who take pencil to paper (as well as techie types who are into three-dimensional modeling) to create something that makes us take notice. I encourage you to appreciate their handiwork and to support the arts, decorative and otherwise.

ELIZABETH VON DER GOLTZ

Global Buying Director at Net-a Porter

As global buying director of London-based e-tailer Neta-Porter, Elizabeth von der Goltz searches the world for the latest luxury fashion finds. “From a purely work perspective, we cover as much as we can globally. We're in all the major cities for the fashion weeks, and other markets, such as Sydney; Seoul, South Korea; Copenhagen, Denmark and Tbilisi, Georgia,” she says. One scroll through her Instagram feed and you’ll see edgy-glam street-style shots from those scouting trips, as well as a running travelogue of von der Goltz’s sun-saturated pleasure destinations. “The fashion world is so visual. There’s so much stimulation all the time that sometimes you need to just clear your mind, and go hiking or meditate,” she says. One of the places von der Goltz escapes to is Thailand. “I love the energy of Bangkok. The Buddhist people have this lovely warmth and spirituality. You can relax on a lazy boat ride down a river or go to a ramshackle, chaotic open market— you see things you don’t see anywhere else.” It’s that promise of a rare find that makes it hard for von der Goltz to shut off her buyer’s brain. “I’m constantly seeking out the obscure sandal maker or an undiscovered designer. Even when I’m on vacation, the wheels are still turning,” she says.

Two years ago, Brazilian jewelry designer Silvia Furmanovich saw an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art that stuck with her. “Divine Pleasures: Painting from India’s Rajput Courts” assembled a vast anthology of opaque watercolors commissioned by the royal courts of Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills between the 16th and 19th centuries. Not only did the paintings’ depictions of exotic myths and legends capture her imagination, but so too did the artists’ technique, which showed an astounding attention to minute detail. Not long after that, she embarked on a 40-day trip to India to explore the country’s art and culture firsthand. “India is the most incredible place, especially Rajasthan, where the colors and decorative embellishments were unlike anything I’d ever experienced,” says Furmanovich. “In terms of architecture, Mughal and Oriental influences mix together, creating layers of rich ornamentation, so your eye never rests. From inlaid marble patterns to carpet designs, there are ideas on every surface.” As she explored the country’s decorative arts traditions, she began to formulate ideas for her latest line of jewelry. The result: Breathtaking tableaux are hand-painted in miniature on a single earring, and flowering vines rendered in wood marquetry adorn evening clutches. Rudraksha seeds, used as prayer beads and temple offerings, become organic statement earrings while inlaid gemstones create delicate scenes on many of the pieces. “If it weren’t for travel, this India Collection would not exist,” says Furmanovich. “Also, if I didn’t go anywhere, I wouldn’t have such interesting stories to tell!”

If you’re on the hunt for high-end conversation starters in the interior design world, few places satisfy quite like Creel and Gow in New York. The Upper East Side boutique has long been a destination for the style set seeking curious objets, such as a taxidermy albino peacock or a model of the Royal Brighton Pavilion made of matchsticks. These intriguing finds are often the fruits of extensive travels by Paris-based owner Jamie Creel. “Exploration is crucial to finding new inspiration,” says Creel. “I think most of my best ideas come when I’m on holiday.” To recharge, Creel heads to his house in Tangier. One of the oldest riads in the bustling Moroccan port city, it is where British naval administrator and parliamentarian Samuel Pepys wrote one of his many diaries over 300 years ago. Creel bought the property from American interior design icon Charles Sevigny 10 years ago. “The home is located at the highest point of the old city,” says Creel. “My favorite space to relax is a canvas-covered terrace that overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar.” When Creel ventures out, he strolls the medina in search of treasures for his shop. “Wandering through the narrow, almost medieval streets is like taking a trip back in time,” he says. “The beautiful thing about Morocco is that if you have an idea for something, there is usually a skilled craftsperson nearby who can make it.” Recently, he commissioned a metalworker to create brass lamps and a textile maker to weave pom-pom bedspreads for the shop. It’s hardly surprising that a place with so many artisans would attract creative types. “With its grittiness and authenticity, Tangier has always been a magnet for artists, writers and actors,” says Creel. “I think there must be more decorators with second homes here than any other place in the world.”

WOVEN HISTORY KRAVET TOASTS A MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY AND CELEBRATES GLOBAL INSPIRATION THROUGH AN ECLECTIC NEW COLLECTION. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG YOUNG

LX_COM20_Radar_Launch_Kravet.indd 72

There are few greater accomplishments in the fast-moving and ever-changing design trade than making it to the seasoned age of 100. This year the Kravet company hits that mark, having grown from a small fabric house to an industry leader, acquiring historic brands such as Brunschwig & Fils, GP & J Baker and Lee Jofa along the way. The fifth-generation family business is built on an unwavering passion for textiles that propels the Kravets to seek out some of the world’s most elusive archival prints and patterns. It should come as no surprise, then, that the company’s latest collection is inspired by travel.

Named for Jeanne Baret, the 18th-century French explorer who was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, the Baret Collection (shown here), released under the Brunschwig & Fils label, takes its cues from various exotic ports of call. For example, rural scenes of the Far East spring to life in the Xian print, and colorful medallions dance on a Central Indian-inspired suzani pattern. The global tour continues with bold African animal prints and Kashmir-inspired paisleys, resulting in a rich collection that blends an old-world aesthetic with modern, bohemian élan. “The story of Jeanne Baret resonated with

us because travel inspires so many of our designers,” says Cary Kravet, president of the company. “One of the great luxuries of life is to see other cultures, styles and traditions.” That globe-trotting is often done by Cary’s brother, Scott Kravet, who is chief creative director. A fiber expert, he searches the world for antique prints to add to the working archive, which is, according to Cary, “an impressive accumulation of decorative arts and textiles from around the world, heavily influenced by English, French and Asian design.” Having all of that history at one’s fingertips provides an endless stream of daily creative inspiration: “Most of our designs draw on an element or two from our archive,” Cary adds. Holding the keys to such a jaw-dropping archival collection is just one example of Kravet’s evolution from humble trimmings shop on Manhattan’s Lower East Side to design industry powerhouse. In fact, earlier this year, to celebrate its centenary, the company released the Modern Tailor collection, a nod to the brothers' great-

LX_COM20_Radar_Launch_Kravet.indd 74

grandfather, Samuel Kravet, who launched the business in 1918. “He started out as a tailor with nothing but a dream and an incredible work ethic, then moved into selling tassels and tiebacks for the home, before finally transitioning into upholstery fabrics,” says Cary. “His drive and perseverance are what Kravet is built on, and there’s no better way to honor him than with a special collection.”

The anniversary festivities don’t end there. The company recently relaunched its website and is busy working with Vendome Press on a book that fetes trailblazing designers of the last 100 years to tie in with the centennial. After that? Possibly a breather. Says Cary, “By the end of the year, we may need a nice long vacation from all the celebrating!”

PAPER MATES

THE DUO BEHIND JUPITER 10 LEADS US ON A WORLD TOUR THROUGH THEIR VIBRANT WALLCOVERINGS.

WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

For more than 10 years, London-based designers Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke created groundbreaking digital prints in the fashion world, winning critical accolades and the patronage of chic and sartorially adventurous women. Former First Lady Michelle Obama, Rihanna and Iris Apfel have all donned the Basso & Brooke label, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has archived their work. Last year, the duo waded into the interior design world with Jupiter 10, their brand of modernist wallcoverings. Thirty new patterns, all named for international destinations, have since been added. Here, they talk to us about travel as an inspiration and how digital technology is redefining luxury. Every wallpaper is named for a city. What inspired you about these locales? BB: The ideas for the patterns came from revisiting our fragmented memories of places we’ve been that left an impression—a small detail of a traditional Japanese confectionery we had in a tea room in Kyoto, Japan; a marquetry floor in a grand ballroom in Vienna; a cactus garden in Tulum, Mexico; or a faraway view of a fortress in the Amman, Jordan desert, for example. Is there a place you never tire of visiting? BB: Portugal is a fascinating country with an extensive history of pattern. Right now, we’re restoring a 100-year-old house in the Portuguese countryside and are constantly amused by the color palettes of the beautiful azulejo tiles and the exteriors of houses. The combinations are eccentric but sophisticated. CB: Broadly, Japan has always inspired us; there’s an inherent mystique and history of pattern in the country's fine papers and textiles. 076 / luxesource.com

Your wallpapers read as maximalist, yet the inspiration is often minimalist midcentury modern. How do you strike that balance? BB: We were never interested in recreating a pastiche of midcentury modern designs in new colorways. We’ve always taken our cues from masters like Frank Lloyd Wright, Lina Bo Bardi, Gio Ponti and the Bauhaus—those who distill ideas and express a bolder visual message. CB: The Jupiter 10 patterns may read as maximalist, but they're composed of very simplified shapes and forms; we think the playful colorways add a strong contemporary appeal. Has digital printing changed the process? BB: On the technical side, new machines have higher color accuracy and resolution. New inks have more vibrant hues. Silk and grass cloth can now be embellished digitally. On the creative side, there's more freedom, color precision and speed in making a sample. You instantly see results and that can be very inspiring. CB: The process is also a much more environmentally friendly affair than traditional methods. The printing inks are water-based and our non-woven substrates are made from recycled materials. There is very little waste compared to the old way of printing wallpaper.

photos: courtesy jupiter 10.

Speaking of papers and textiles, how does designing wallpaper differ from fashion? BB: The fashion industry gave us a unique insight into trends. Collections are presented at least twice a year, so we were forced to be very prolific with new designs. The interior design world has a longer shelf life; prints transcend seasons. With wallcoverings, we are able to create something with lasting appeal.

Christened for the exotic locales that inspired them, Jupiter 10's modernist wallpapers feature bold patterns. Doha (above, left), Fez (above, right) and Delft (right) are just a few examples in the global collection.

How is technology transforming the concept of luxury goods, which are often handmade? CB: Digital printing allows us to tailor products to a client’s wishes with far less minimum quantities required. We recently completed a project for Dimore Studio at the Arts Club in London. They wanted our Nairobi design printed onto a textured grass cloth. We often receive requests from design studios, architects and interior designers who require very specific colorways. With the digital process, we can customize color by matching to Pantone references. This adds a luxury aspect where the final design is made specifically for the client. What’s next for Jupiter 10? CB: Right now, we’re focusing on wallpapers, working on the best worldwide distribution, but we’ll be looking to expand into coordinating rugs, upholstery fabrics, tiles and china in the near future.

ON VIEW OBJETS NOMADES

The art of travel is the theme of this year’s Objets Nomades home-goods collection—Louis Vuitton’s annual release since 2012—and much like the nature of the pieces themselves, an exhibit of the line is traveling to select locations, including the Windy City. Beginning in July, the brand’s boutique on Michigan Avenue will display an assortment of the 25 thought-provoking items, which include tables, chairs, lamps and more, each reimagined by some of the design industry’s most renowned names, such as Patricia Urquiola and Marcel Wanders. Pieces in the well-traveled collection include a talisman-inspired table by India Mahdavi, a wovenleather hammock by Atelier Oï and the hanging Cocoon chair (right) by brothers Fernando Campana and Humberto Campana. us.louisvuitton.com

OPEN HOUSE

In 2015, designers Christina Samatas and Renee DiSanto created Park & Oak, a Glen Ellyn-based firm. A nod to the streets where they reside—Samatas is on Park Boulevard, while DiSanto lives on Oak Street—their company of seven women focuses on creating homes that feel unique, lived in and layered with textures and warmth. Recently, they’ve taken their talents to television, as Park & Oak has created a barn-like set for a cooking show in production starring food blogger Tieghan Gerard. We speak with Samatas and DiSanto about upcoming projects, trends and more. parkandoak.com

As the summer temps rise, so do the number of Windy City design offerings. Space 519, for instance, has moved into a next-level flagship store (200 E. Chestnut St.), where co-owners Lance Lawson and Jim Wetzel offer an assortment of home goods, apparel and accessories. In the Burr Ridge Village Center, designer Leslie Bowman opened The Design Bar (725 Village Center Dr.), a 7,000-square-foot showroom offering flooring, cabinetry, custom bedding, lighting and wallcoverings—plus a gallery of high-end giclées (below). More art can be found at the new Chicago outpost of Serena & Lily (853 W. Armitage Ave.), which has a rotating gallery as well as a swatch wall of more than 300 textile designs. And Eskell has opened the doors to its Bucktown location (2029 N. Western Ave.), selling pieces by independent area furniture and home-goods designers alongside the brand’s apparel.

SHOPS + SHOWROOMS

What was it like designing a TV set? CS: We’ve never built a barn before, and this is not a house where people live, so we were able to have a little fun with it. Our inspiration was earth elements: natural wood tones layered with textures and various metals. Tieghan is super talented, and we’re excited to watch the show. Any trends you are noticing among clients? CS: It’s nice to see the warmer colors and organic elements being incorporated into homes. We also love to embrace the character of older residences. What design elements are in your own homes? RD: Black interior windows—we like the contrast against the light and bright rooms. We also love incorporating organic elements to create more warmth and make our spaces feel very lived in. Where can we find you shopping for home goods? CS: We love to support local businesses whenever we can. Some of our favorites are Jayson Home, Redefined Decor, Marcel’s Culinary Experience and 610 Home. 82 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSIDE EDITION

“We enjoy designing backyard patios that maintain a connection to the main house by using tile or concrete flooring similar to what is inside. We can then create a pergola by extending the house beams over this patio and plant it with wisteria, which provides natural shade in the summer while still allowing warmth and light to filter through.”

“We have found our clients are trending toward California-type materials, such as natural white-oak flooring, bluestone materials for porches and patios, oversize front doors that allow lots of natural light and black and brass tones for hardware, lighting and plumbing fixtures. Open floor plans are still a must, with clean lines throughout— less is more these days.”

“We love incorporating truly custom details that are unique to the client and the home. For instance, we had a client who is a chemist, so we designed a wet bar to replicate the skeletal formula of a particular chemical bond with a series of hexagonal custom cabinets. Details like this are what sets a home being built for you apart from just a new house. ”

“Our team is currently working on an amazing rooftop terrace at a private residence overlooking Millennium Park. The vision is a complete transformation starting with the flooring, where we are combining a seamless blend of three materials: green SYNlawn grass, large-format porcelain pavers and ipe decking, all flush on the same plane.”

“A lot of people want to add a transitional look and feel to their home. They still want classic lines and forms as a backdrop but not as heavy in terms of detailing. These classic elements, usually in the form of moldings and flooring materials and patterns, are paired with more modern and streamlined elements, such as tile and stone.”

▼ AMBASSADOR CHICAGO A Windy City hot spot since 1926, the Ambassador Chicago was restored by Journal Hotels in 2017, turning to its illustrious past as a Hollywood magnet for inspiration. The 17-floor Gold Coast gem exudes a largely neutral palette—a white-marble lobby and 285 mostly cream-colored rooms—to allow its authentic Art Deco design features to shine, including vaulted ceilings and original crown moldings. It’s a classic backdrop for the rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and the various photos of stars like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, a reminder of the icons who have stayed on property. ambassadorchicago.com

▲ THE TALBOTT In the Gold Coast neighborhood, The Talbott hotel reopened last May following a $20 million refresh by interior designer Kara Mann. The results of her first hotel project begins in the expanded lobby, which feels more like a pied-à-terre thanks to marble tables and velvet chairs. The 1927 structure was also modified to accommodate an extra 29 rooms; Mann brightened all 178 with neutral colors, gold accents, sheer draperies, marble bathrooms and thoughtful touches like images by local photographers. jdvhotels.com

⊳ SOPHY HYDE PARK The innovative character of Hyde Park—home to the Museum of Science and Industry, among other institutions—is the inspiration for Sophy Hyde Park, the seven-story boutique hotel opening in the neighborhood this summer (its name is derived from the Greek word sophia, a nod to the pursuit of knowledge). The Norman brick exterior by GREC Architects frames 98 rooms by Stonehill Taylor, all of which have hardwood floors, an 8-foot art piece by abstract painter Joey Korom and a record player featuring tunes by local musicians. The wow factor starts in the lobby, which houses a 15-foot double-sided fireplace and a 1,000-pound chandelier. sophyhotel.com

August marks the one-year anniversary since the Ace Hotel Chicago opened in the West Loop. Taking over a former cheese factory, the boutique hotel captures a Bauhaus feel within a concrete-and-glass building converted by GREC Architects. Inside, 159 rooms by Commune Design show off materials such as polished steel, marble walls and ceilings, plywood furnishings and wood-grain desks, all warmed by linens, leathers by Horween Leather Company and handwoven textiles. Works by Volume Gallery artists are displayed throughout, and there’s more art to be seen in the sculpture garden on the fifth-floor terrace. acehotel.com

GOOD NATURED ARCHITECTURE’S INTERACTION WITH THE NATURAL WORLD INSPIRES THESE PICKS FOR STYLISH LIVING. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ELIZABETH HUEBSCH

BAROQUE BEAUTY

Situated in Cernobbio, a province of Como, Italy, is Villa d’Este, a hotel that has entertained noble men and women, scholars, artists, writers and financiers. Originally built as a convent in the 15th century, Villa d’Este has changed over the centuries to reflect its owners. The nymphaeum (shown here) stands the test of time as an example of Baroque style with its multicolored pebble mosaic, sculpture depicting Hercules and Lichas, box hedges, flower beds, cypresses, and laurel. The nymphaeum represents an ode to nature in an intricate and artful way.

DESERT MIRAGE

Rising from a desolate, rocky landscape in Joshua Tree, California, is a three-bedroom house made of shipping containers. Designed by architect James Whitaker for a client in the film industry, the residence sits on a 90-acre mountainside plot of land where stormwater created a gully. The shipping containers are oriented to maximize views and provide privacy, where needed, and solar panels on the roof of the garage power the building. This futuristic, space-age home sparks our search for edgy pieces fit for desert life.

The restaurant's minimalist faรงade is a purposeful tribute created by architects Peter Pichler and Pavol Mikolajcak to further emphasize the overpowering quality of the natural beauty of the Alps. Taking cues from the angular architecture, these items showcase simplistic structures with glitzy touches.

Christopher Guy, Cyrillic Mirror

Stacy Garcia Stacy Garcia, Inc. Nanuet, NY “Mixed materials, asymmetrical pieces, and interesting carved facades were dominant trends at High Point this spring. Bernhardt outdid itself with the Smithson Credenza. Its captivating cubist planes and acid-etched metals spoke to me. Christopher Guy’s modern Cyrillic Mirror is exceptional. Each piece is sculpted with polished-edge mirror panes, while a mirrorless center sparks visual interest.”

Alfonso Marina, Aarhus Chair

“My favorite find this market is Alfonso Marina’s Aarhus Chair—its slim wood frame with wicker detailing, upholstered cushions and brass accents feels fresh, yet timeless. I was also mesmerized by Roberta Schilling’s new outdoor collection, featuring whimsical shapes and fun, neutral color combinations. The Midas Swing Chair will add a pop of personality to any outdoor space!”

Dunes and Duchess, Equator Mirror

Jeffrey Johnson Jeffrey Design, LLC Dallas, TX & Los Angeles, CA “I spotted a myriad of innovative, new resources at High Point Market, but two stood out. Henredon’s Camilla Chair, inspired by 1940’s architecture, is top-notch exquisite. Designed by David Kleinberg, its elegant form put me in a state of awe. My second favorite is the Equator Mirror by Dunes and Duchess—it’s perfect for indoor or outdoor living.”

SPLASH LANDING DESIGN INSIDERS PROVIDE WORLDLY INSIGHT INTO TREASURES CRAFTED BY MAKERS AROUND THE GLOBE.

PRODUCED BY ELIZABETH HUEBSCH PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALICE GAO

FERNANDO RODRIGUEZ

INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER STEWARTRODRIGUEZ.COM

First impression: It's a conversation piece that makes me want to learn more about the designer, inspiration and construction. I can relate to… Giancarlo Valle. I'm Puerto Rican but spent 30 years working in various cities, like New York and Miami. Heritage has many layers of traditions, cultures and monuments that influence your perspective and approach to design. There is a slight resemblance to… Mayan style from the soft curves throughout the base and seat, yet the colors are very cosmopolitan. The vertical lines give a strong sense of modernism. On material: There are so many great layers: The shearling, linen and Italian mohair are the perfect luxurious blend. I already see them in… a monochromatic, eclectic home with a blend of vintage and modern pieces in shades of cream or a living room with a soft palette and navy accents. Global design is… the present and the future. The projects I enjoy the most are spaces that celebrate global heritage and blend cultures and ways of living in one space.

LOVE SEATS THE PIECE: Smile Seats THE DESIGNER: Giancarlo Valle FIND IT: giancarlovalle.com THE INSPIRATION: Growing up in North, Central and South America gave Giancarlo Valle a well-rounded outlook on design. Valle always considers the context of the pieces he creates—giving them a presence that won’t overpower the spaces they inhabit. The Smile Seats exhibit those qualities: They have their own posture and style, emanating modernity without sterility. At once armchairs and benches that can seat two apiece, they transcend typical furniture archetypes.

BENCH WARMER THE PIECE: Dasher Bench with Pierre Frey Fabric THE DESIGNER: Kate McIntyre and Brad Huntzinger FIND IT: ironies.com THE INSPIRATION: Designers Kate McIntyre and Brad Huntzinger have made organic references and natural motifs a signature in their contemporary furniture designs. The cast brass base of the Dasher Bench has an antiqued bronze finish, giving the curvature of the legs a masculine gravitas. Upholstered with a toile fabric titled Plateau/Pampa by French textile house Pierre Frey, this iteration of the design juxtaposes traditional and contemporary elements.

JORGE CASTILLO INTERIOR DESIGNER JORGECASTILLO.COM

The Dasher Bench… reminds me of the landscape that I used to experience as a child in some parts of Mexico. It’s very organic. Thinking globally: The frame is by an American company and the fabric is French, depicting an Argentinian countryside. I would call this a perfect marriage of international design. Heritage is… very important when designing for an international audience. Design journey: I am originally from Mexico, and after graduating from college, I moved to Cleveland, Ohio. In 1998, I opened my design firm. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work on both residential and commercial projects throughout the United States. In 2009, with the intention of reconnecting to my Latin American roots, I moved to Miami. I stay true to… my core design philosophy. However, I like to introduce materials and finishes associated with the local culture and the client’s heritage. I imagine… this piece living in a space that I designed in a Colorado modern home, sitting in front of a roaring fireplace, at the foot of a bed or in an entry hall.

TECTONIC SHIFT THE PIECE: Jardinière THE DESIGNER: Armand Jonckers FIND IT: maisongerard.com THE INSPIRATION: Born to a French mother and a Belgian father in 1939, Armand Jonckers has spent much of his life traveling the world as an antiquarian, sculptor, engraver, decorator and mineralogist. His modular coffee table represents his multihyphenate identity in its dynamic construction, etchings reminiscent of ancient script and use of solid brass. The two pieces of Jardinière can shift together or apart, revealing a vessel in the center for a plant.

LX_COM20_Market_Spotlight.indd 130

FRANCIS D’HAENE

ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER DAPOSTROPHE.COM

I am captivated by… the geometric shapes and swirling etchings on Jonckers' Jardinière. I imagine… this being a conversation piece, placed between two beautiful sofas in front of a fireplace, with an orchid in the center, creating that intimate setting. Taking risks… like Jonckers' use of geometric shapes in the design of this table, should be thoughtful and intentional. If done correctly, risks can really pay off like they did here. Being Belgian: Much of my design inspiration stems from the Belgian design influence I was exposed to in my earlier years. And even to this day with architects and designers like Vincent Van Duysen and Axel Vervoordt, it’s hard to deny their global impact on the design community. Family ties: My father owned a small glass and mirror business and my mother was involved in the arts, so I’ve been exposed to the art and design world from an early age. After graduating… from Sint-Lukas in Brussels, I moved to New York to pursue my design career and gain experience within the international design community.

ROYAL PALM THE PIECE: Alexandria Lamp THE DESIGNER: Syrette Lew FIND IT: mvngmtns.com THE INSPIRATION: Moving Mountains, the studio of American designer Syrette Lew, pays tribute to the ever-changing archipelago of her native Hawaii, and her Alexandria Lamp is an ode to the palm lamps of the 1960s and 1970s with a modern twist. Lew’s furniture, accessories and jewelry explore unique amorphous shapes and playful color and material choices. Her history of designing for a mass-market furniture brand inspires an approach that is holistic and thoughtful. Though many of her designs are statement pieces, Lew is concerned with creating durable work that will last for generations.

STEPHANIE HAUPTLI

INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER HAUPTLIHAUS.COM

The Alexandria Lamp… is a silent showstopper. You have to stop for a little flirt with this piece. It’s begging to be noticed. I can imagine it… on a bar cart in a dining or living room, in a private movie screening room or at an entry as a focal piece on a commode. It is so well-designed… that it could integrate in many different interiors. It’s not loud… but it’s definitely prominent. On discovering worldly finds: Looking for treasures while traveling is my favorite way to find pieces. But, more than not, I find myself turning to 1stdibs where you can find great pieces from all corners of the world and easily communicate with vendors. Taking risks… is very important, if not essential, to growing as a designer. In doing so, you avoid becoming a cut and paste designer. Growing up… around a lot of history in Europe gave me a deep appreciation for vintage pieces and buildings, which inspires me to design with longevity in mind.

FRENCH CONNECTION THE PIECE: Reine Lamps THE DESIGNER: Aurélie Chapelle and David Machado, Chape & Mache FIND IT: rochebobois.com THE INSPIRATION: French brands Roche Bobois and Chape & Mache collaborated on the design of these graphic light fixtures. “Reine” translates from French to “queen,” which is why these whimsical lamps have a distinctly royal feel. Inspired by the gadroon pleating of ruffled collars from Renaissance fashion, the three-dimensional fabric, folded and pleated, creates a cascading light that illuminates interiors. Utilizing a fashion statement of the past, Chape & Mache “dresses” the light by channeling its waves through modern materials.

LX_COM20_Market_Spotlight.indd 134

GREG NATALE INTERIOR DESIGNER GREGNATALE.COM

First impression: Their purpose isn't immediately obvious; they could evoke blooming flowers, bursting fireworks or even period costume. The scale and ambiguity of this design really catches my eye. The French… offer a very unique point of view with their design. The term avant-garde sums up that sensibility perfectly! One of my favorite things to do… is hit the vintage and flea markets in France. I am in Paris quite a lot and I never pass up the opportunity to visit the markets or trawl through some of the vintage galleries. On his origins: My parents emigrated to Australia from Italy in the 1950s so the European aesthetic is something that really resonates with me. These pieces are… definitely statement or almost art pieces. I love that they can help finish a room by adding balance to an area that might feel empty. Great design… always causes some sort of reaction.

5/17/18 2:54 PM

SUN SCREEN THE PIECE: Flamengo Screen THE DESIGNER: Antonio da Motta Leal and Alexander Lamont FIND IT: alexanderlamont.com THE INSPIRATION: Bangkok-based Alexander Lamont is equally inspired by the East and West, developing collections that pay tribute to meticulous craftsmanship and fine materials found in nature. Lamont worked with Brazilian designer Antonio da Motta Leal to design this towering screen, which is over 6 feet tall and features silvered straw marquetry and Koto veneer. The Flamengo Screen was inspired by urban art at Copacabana Beach created by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, whose curling pavement mosaics are iconic to Rio de Janeiro.

KATHARINE POOLEY INTERIOR DESIGNER KATHARINEPOOLEY.COM

Déjà vu: I'm reminded of the flowing, organic Henry Moore Sculpture Two Large Forms. Much like Moore’s work, this screen is inherently sculptural with a gentle undulation, combined with the peachy patina of the starburst straw marquetry, creating a feminine softness to the large interlocking pieces. This work aptly reflects… fearless, exuberant Brazilian design, which is unafraid of striking shapes and embraces playful detail and highly stylized midcentury form. The finish denotes Alexander Lamont’s elegant pieces. There is nothing as exciting… as finding rare and unique objets d’art in far-flung locations. I recently found new suppliers of incredible semi-precious stones and marbles in Amsterdam; crystal in the Czech Republic; and the best leather in northern Italy. I’d place this piece… in a client’s majestic villa in Kuwait among their unique collection of Far East antiques and relics, which has inspired me, but I'm also adding midcentury and bespoke pieces for a little contemporary elegance and to make space for the heavier antiques to breathe.

Zephyr’s LED lights are energyefficient and last up to 25,000 hours, which equates to approximately 68 years. CleanAir. The hood should be turned on at low speed for 10 minutes before cooking and 10 minutes after to capture residual heat and odors. Zephyr’s CleanAir feature automatically turns the hood on for 10 minutes every four hours, circulating the air inside the home.

INN VOGUE DESIGNERS TAKE CUES FROM LUXURY HOTELS FOR THESE HIGH-STYLE KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MIMI FAUCETT

It’s no secret that designers source inspiration for their residential projects from the elements and architectural approaches found within the world’s leading hotels. For this kitchen in Brentwood, California, Vanessa Alexander of Alexander Design turned to the interior concepts of the Greenwich Hotel in New York and the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles to spur her imagination. “The client wanted a masculine, contemporary space that evoked the golden days of Hollywood,” says Alexander. “I wanted to mix the history and the vibe of downtown New York with the glam but laid-back essence of Los Angeles, which is very similar to his personality.” The outcome is a welcoming, open space hinting at the two chic properties. Similarly, on the following pages, you’ll find bold, graphic kitchen palettes; tranquil spa baths; a bespoke apothecary line; chic, avant-garde accessories and more, all inspired by trailblazing hospitality work from around the globe. SUITE SETUP Chicago-based designer Dan Rak took inspiration for this bold, Chicago kitchen from The Ludlow, a richly layered property in New York that is “polished and edgy at the same time,” he says. He achieved that same balance with this kitchen, where he mixed refined elements, like a brass and crystal pendant, with a graphic cement backsplash by Clé Tile. danrakdesign.com

WAKE UP CALL Following the success of its 2017 line of refrigerators, Italian appliance brand Smeg and maximalist fashion house Dolce & Gabbana have teamed up again for a line of smaller color-punched appliances called “Sicily is my love.” Like all the pieces in the collection, the electric tea kettle is adorned with multicolored flourishes, fruits and floral motifs inspired by the coasts and landscapes of southern Italy. smegusa.com

Replicate the industrial vibe from some of the country’s top hotels with the Grain sconce from Brendan Ravenhill Studio in Los Angeles. Officially launched in October, the handmade swing-arm light is created using a wooden mold that imparts handsome woodgrain onto its aluminum surface. Ravenhill touts the design’s ability to cozy up an open floor plan with ease. “It can break out a larger space into more intimate sections,” he says. “By extending from the wall and dropping down, it can pull a seating nook together.” brendanravenhill.com

STAY AWHILE

The crisp and clean bathroom oasis at The Bowery Hotel in downtown New York, imagined by hoteliers and travel gurus Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode, is the picture of luxury.

photo: annie schlechter.

Tucked inside the luxurious European-style suites of The Bowery Hotel in downtown New York, guests remain blissfully unaware of the hustle and bustle just outside. Each suite contains a spa-like bathroom with a roomy walk-in shower. Crisp, all-white marble covers the space, punctuated by antiqued brass frames and fixtures. Rain shower heads and Le Labo bath products invite guests to treat themselves to a moment of relaxation—and isn’t that the reason for a vacation? theboweryhotel.com

SPA SERVICE Elad Yifrach, founder and creative director of L’Objet, proved he knew his way around bath products when he devised Parfums de Voyage, the company’s home fragrance line, with master perfumer Yann Vasnier. This past year, Yifrach and Vasnier teamed up again to round out the apothecary collection with a selection of sprays, salts, soaps and lotions. “Scents hold the power to transport us immediately to a place in time or recapture a mood,” says Yifrach. l-objet.com

Nothing says luxury hotel bath quite like a freestanding tub. Duravit recently introduced the DuraSquare freestanding tub, as part of a larger collection inspired by the juxtaposition between sharp edges and flowing lines. The architectural tub specifically is crafted with DuraSolid, a mineral material that feels warm to the touch. “The manufacturing process using DuraSolid creates a bathtub with a matte, velvety finish that truly provides a spa-like experience,” says Tim Schroeder, president of Duravit USA. It offers a designated space for relaxation, he says, “visually carving out its own calming retreat within the bathroom.” duravit.com

As Adler explains, “Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t feel like you’re living in a five-star suite.” We couldn’t agree more. jonathanadler.com

DESIGN DISPATCHES FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

FOREIGN AFFAIRS In her 1980 book, Allure, legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland proclaimed, “The eye has to travel,” emphasizing the importance of visual stimulation in the creative world. Surely, one of the best ways to kick out the doldrums is to change up your surroundings. This year our travel-themed report visits perennial design destinations, such as Paris, as well as places farther afield. We found that Tokyo remains a fascinating crossroads of ancient Edo culture and all things shiny and new, while a vibrant and unifying art scene is thriving in South Africa’s major cities. Finally, Cuba, with a newly installed president and an exhilarating artisan and maker movement, boasts designers who continue to eye the future with an optimistic spirit.

Inspiration is all around—including above—at the recently renovated Ritz Paris, a symbol of belle epoque elegance and one of designer Dorothée Meilichzon's occasional haunts.

1 SUITE TREAT Under her firm Chzon, French designer Dorothée Meilichzon is responsible for some of the most photogenic hotels and restaurants in Paris. Her atmospheric, unpretentious spaces use pattern play and elegant materials, such as marble and brass, to build of-the-moment environments that slyly pay homage to the past. Below, some highlights from a day in the busy designer’s life. chzon.com 8 a.m. I don’t usually do breakfast, but when I do, I go to the new Ritz hotel. I love that you can pick and choose from an extensive selection of sweet and savory items. 10 a.m. I enjoy taking a mid-morning walk at the Jardin des Tuileries. It’s a beautiful garden, full of flowers—especially in the spring. There’s a labyrinth and ponds, not to mention gorgeous views of the Louvre.

LX_COM20_TheReport.indd 172

12 p.m. We just finished a project at the Hotel des Grands Boulevards, and I often grab a bite there. Giovanni Passerini is the chef, and the courtyard is a beautiful spot for lunch. The hotel design was inspired by the Hameau de la Reine, the rustic retreat built for Marie Antoinette near the Petit Trianon. 2 p.m. One of my favorite stores in Paris is Le Bon Marché. The atmosphere is elegant, and the goods are highly curated. It always showcases the newest brands and incorporates art installations and cultural exhibitions. 4 p.m. When I feel the need for a little inspiration, I visit the Musée des Arts Décoratifs or Centre Pompidou. I could look at their permanent collections 10,000 times and not get tired of them, and they always present the right traveling exhibitions. I love Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri's installations.

6 p.m. I like to start the evening with pre-dinner cocktails at the Hotel National des Arts et Métiers. Designer Raphael Navot, owner Samy Marciano and restaurateur Julien Cohen are the team behind this hotel. The space has a factory-chic vibe and the drinks are top-notch. 8 p.m. Dinner at Balagan is always fun. Chefs Assaf Granit and Uri Navon are from Jerusalem and their Israeli-inspired dishes have French and Moroccan touches. It’s a great place to unwind after a long day.

For her latest emporium, designer Sarah Lavoine could not have found a more typically Parisian environment. Located in the 16th arrondissement, off a cobblestone courtyard, the industrial-cool warehouse is a historic building that formerly housed one of the area’s oldest locksmiths. Now it showcases the designer’s full breadth of work, with furniture, housewares and lifestyle products arranged in artful vignettes throughout the space. “It’s refreshing to be able to propose an entire environment that truly reflects my personality and range of ideas,” she says. “We want to provide an experience where a stroll through the store offers a surprise around every corner.” sarahlavoine.com

Few modes of travel convey luxury quite like the Venice-Simplon Orient Express. Taking design cues from Paris, Venice and Istanbul, three cities on the storied train’s route, Wimberly Interiors just completed a loving restoration of the 1920s-era cars, creating grand suites that retain many of the carriages’ original bespoke details. The Paris suite is a sumptuous retreat complete with elegant furnishings, crystal barware and Lalique crystal panels. belmond.com

4 LUST MUST

History tells us that desire is a potent motivator, but it’s also a source of inspiration. For her latest furniture collection, designer Donna Mondi looked to the wandering eyes of French kings. Each piece has been given the moniker of a royal mistress—the bench shown here is named for courtier Diane de Poitiers, who captured the attention of King Henry II. While such passion is often fleeting, Mondi’s deft blend of Art Deco and midcentury forms offers more permanent thrills. dmondiinteriordesign.com

CULTURE TRIP

Tokyo was architect Stephanie Goto’s playground as a child. Here she shows us the concept of Japanese hospitality, known as omotenashi, by sharing her favorite spots in the bustling metropolis. stephaniegoto.com 7 a.m. Early mornings are often a jet-lag reality, so a quick swim at the Aman Tokyo’s pool, perched high in the sky, and the umami-rich Japanese breakfast served in your suite is an energizing, must-do ritual. 10 a.m. A cultural outing sets the tone for the day. Explore the beauty of Japan through the craft of everyday items including earthenware, textiles and lacquerware by artisans at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. 12 p.m. For a sushi lunch, I recommend the ground floor at Kyubey’s main shop in Ginza. Order the omakase, the house cold sake and request a taste of every sea urchin type they have. And don’t pass up the thinly sliced daikon radish, salty plum and shiso at the meal’s conclusion—it’s their signature.

LX_COM20_TheReport.indd 174

2 p.m. Take an architecture walk on the outskirts of Ginza to see the Nakagin Capsule Tower, an iconic example of the Metabolist movement by master architect Kisho Kurokawa. On a grander scale, the Tokyo International Forum by Rafael Viñoly still remains breathtaking. 3 p.m. Visit the Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, a truly Japanese art form which recalls the beauty of storytelling, at the Ukiyo-e Ota Memorial Museum of Art.

housewares; D&D Department for global finds that work in the kitchen and home; and Tokyu Hands, a one-stop-shop for home, beauty and lifestyle goods.

4 p.m. Stop at Onibus Coffee, located in the Nakameguro neighborhood, for a cortado and don’t pass up a sweet treat. Japanese pastries rival those of France.

8 p.m. Dinner at the chef’s counter at Sugalabo is the perfect finale for the day. Chef Yosuke Suga is the visionary behind this hidden boutique restaurant that features simple dishes using carefully curated ingredients. Order the curry rice, an off-menu item that’s a Japanese home-cooking classic.

5 p.m. Tokyo is a great city for shopping. Three musts are Kohoro for one-of-a-kind

Named in honor of the early 20th-century Japanese folkart movement, Schumacher’s Mingei collection of fabrics and wallcoverings celebrates craftsmanship and the imperfect beauty of handmade textiles. Transporting patterns evocative of nature—think swirling clouds, delicate branches and rural village scenes—are just a few of the motifs rendered in a palette that draws heavily on the indigo tones of traditional shibori prints as well as shades of cream and celadon. fschumacher.com

INFLUENCE

Born in Tokyo and raised in the United States, designer Jonah Takagi makes timeless everyday objects elevated by their artfulness. For instance, the Lamella lighting collection, shown here, features tiny pleats that resemble the underside of a mushroom cap. Imbuing simple forms with complexity is something Takagi saw firsthand in his youth. “In Japan, you see a lacquer bowl and the amount of work involved in producing it is astounding,” he says. “From turning the wooden form to applying layers of lacquer with a brush made only of a specific kind of hair, there's so much consideration paid to an object, yet, at the end of the day, it’s just a humble bowl.” ateliertakagi.com

BOOK

Design lovers, take note: No visit to Tokyo is complete without a trip to the sprawling Daikanyama T-Site complex, home to one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Designed by Klein Dytham Architecture, the campus is anchored by a large branch of Tsutaya books, which features an extensive collection of art and design publications. There’s also an upstairs lounge where you can peruse an impressive collection of more than 30,000 vintage periodicals while you sink into a buttery leather sofa and sip a glass of wine or sake—definitely more swish than your local public library. real.tsite.jp

Even when travel restrictions to Cuba were temporarily eased, few lucky souls got to explore behind the closed doors of Havana’s most beautiful abodes. For an all-access pass, one only needs to peruse the books of Cuban-born architect Hermes Mallea of New York’s M Group. His trio of tomes, including Havana Living Today, offers an intriguing glimpse of private spaces bursting with bold and lively decor. Colorful tiles, crystal chandeliers and stained-glass transoms set the stage for eclectic furnishings and high art. “You would think that expressing personality would have been frowned upon by the regime, but individuality has always been important to Cubans,” says Mallea. “The book reflects a spirit of optimism that’s alive today in the vibrant artisan and maker scene. There’s a hope that the younger generation will stay and create wonderful things.” mgrouponline.com

Grow House Grow designer Katie Deedy launched her Cuba collection of wallpaper and tile last year as a tribute to her cultural heritage: One of the tiles was even christened Tropicana for the Havana nightclub where her maternal grandmother used to go dancing in her youth. Now, Deedy is doubling down on the collection with new cement tiles inspired by family lore, including Willow (shown left) as well as Dotty Hex (above), a jaunty pattern she says recalls one of her grandmother’s favorite dresses. growhousegrow.com

SOUTH AFRICA

12 NEAR & FAR

For this sleek dining terrace, Johannesburg-based HK Studio blended modern design classics, such as Norman Cherner chairs and Kartell pendants, with a contemporary South African serving piece created by Durban-based architect Richard Stretton. “The client is a design-focused international traveler with a keen eye for contemporary art, so we tried to employ enigmatic contrasts of international and locally sourced pieces,” says co-owner and designer Andrea Kleinloog. hkstudio.co.za

11

IN THE ROUND For many of the great museums of the world, the architecture is as exhilarating as the works of art on display. Following that model is Cape Town’s Zeitz MOCAA, which features the largest collection of 21st-century contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. London-based Heatherwick Studio converted the 1920s-era former grain silo into a cultural destination by carving open spaces into the concrete tubes that once held corn. The result is a vaulted marvel that inspires the kind of hushed reverence usually reserved for a cathedral. zeitzmocaa.museum

13OBJECT lesson

Since its launch in Cape Town, the Southern Guild gallery has challenged perceptions about South African design through their highly curated exhibitions, such as “ExtraOrdinary,” which featured the work of artists such as Xavier Clarisse and Chuma Maweni (shown here). “Craft is very old in Africa, but design is young,” says Trevyn McGowan, CEO and co-founder of the Guild Group. “It’s impossible to reduce the diversity and sophistication coming from all corners of the continent, but most African design is rooted in social and political realities, a strong sense of narrative, a true bond with nature, and a sense of human connectedness.” southernguild.co.za

or architect Chris Derrick, president of Derrick Architecture, listening is the first step of every successful design. “When you work with Derrick Architecture, you are trusting us to transform your needs and dreams in a way that complements who you are and how you want to live,” he says. “From site planning through completion, our experience and expertise directs the process to broaden the opportunities and potential of your project. Our goal is to create a one-of-a-kind home for you and your family.” And family is what west suburban living is all about. In fact, Derrick and his family moved to Wheaton in the Western Suburbs more than 20 years ago for its

reputation as a great place to raise a family and be a part of a local community. With completed projects in Wheaton, as well as Naperville, Glen Ellyn, La Grange, Western Springs and Hinsdale, Derrick Architecture has successfully weaved itself into the fabric of these warm, welcoming neighborhoods. While Derrick finds great inspiration from historic architecture, he and his firm embrace the area’s eclectic vibe. “People tend to limit themselves to what they see in their neighborhood,” he says. “We want to expand on that and help educate our clients on additional styles. Part of the architect’s responsibility is to introduce clients to new ideas, styles and ways of looking at things.”

Advice for first-time visitors to the Western Suburbs? Drive to one of the downtown areas, take a walk, visit local shops, grab some coffee, go out to dinner. Describe the lifestyle in the Western Suburbs. Much more relaxed than downtown. What type of person is best suited for life here? Those who like to work hard, but put a priority on family life. Is there anything about this area that is often overlooked? Yes! Art shows, local 10K runs, charity events, car shows, wine and beer fests, garden and house tours, and great coffee houses. How does your firm complement the community? We recently completed a new welcome center for a local private college; we are working on a facelift for a local church, and have designed backdrops for local school plays.

ccording to Drury Design president and creative director, Gail Drury, the clientele in Glen Ellyn and throughout the Chicago metro area vary from project to project. Generally speaking, the common thread is that they understand the benefit that professional design, installation and service brings to the finished project and the overall remodeling experience. “Kitchens and baths are the most complicated rooms of the house to design and remodel,” she says, speaking of her firm’s specialty. “Every project is a new adventure. Design solutions are always driven by the individual client's personal style and goals.” Drury began her foray into the world of kitchen design in 1977 as a designer and trainer for St. Charles Kitchens. Five years later, she

opened a home-based kitchen design studio in Glen Ellyn with one employee. Today, she and husband Jim Drury, studio manager and co-owner, are in their fourth and current, 8,500-square-foot location on Main Street in downtown Glen Ellyn, with 20 team members and counting. The key to the company’s success lies in its philosophy: ask clients a lot of questions, educate them by presenting multiple design possibilities, then assist them throughout the entire process, from beginning to end. “At first, the level of detail and planning that we put into our design work, whether it be a custom kitchen, bath or other space, surprises many clients,” Jim says. “When we deliver the completed kitchen or bath of their dreams, it all falls into place.”

What drew you to the Western Suburbs? Glen Ellyn was the childhood home to my husband, children and our family for the past 37 years. How do you view the Western Suburbs changing over the next decade? In the Glen Ellyn and Wheaton areas, we are experiencing an influx of younger families as baby boomers retire and move on, though this is probably not unique just to the Chicago area. How does your firm complement the community? We have longstanding partnerships with local charities, host community events and, of course, there are the myriad beautiful remodeling projects we have completed.

FROM CITY TO SUBURBS: WHY THE MCCLEARYS MADE THE MOVE

1

“After living in the city of Chicago for 10 years, my husband, Tom, and I made the decision to raise our two children in the suburbs. Tom is a native of Detroit and I’m from Upstate New York. I loved my life in the city and was reluctant for the change of lifestyle. After an extensive search in both the North Shore and the Western Suburbs, we settled in Hinsdale 16 years ago, a thriving, quaint, upscale town with tremendous restaurants, boutiques and excellent schools. Its small village surrounds the center of town, which provides easy access to the train, schools and downtown. It also provides quick access to Chicago, both airports and multiple highways. Hinsdale is a strong supportive community and a wonderful place to live and raise a family.”

he Western Suburbs are full of wonderful communities, each with their own cool, unique characteristics. Hence, narrowing down a place to live can be difficult, especially for homeowners looking to move to the area. Enter, Megan McCleary, real estate broker and principal of McCleary Group, part of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, KoenigRubloff Realty Group. With a majority of its business focused in Hinsdale, this leading real estate team also serves clients in many of the surrounding areas, including Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook, Burr Ridge and Western Springs. “We focus primarily on luxury clientele and providing the

expertise and attention necessary for the absolute best experience for our clients,” McCleary says, referring to the many well-educated, friendly people with whom she works. “I am inspired by my clients and have met so many amazing people that have developed into long-term relationships. But in my business, there is truly no greater joy to me than helping someone buy their very first home.” Thankfully, the Western Suburbs don’t disappoint when it comes to options, with architects, designers and builders collaborating on any and every style of home—from a newly constructed modern farmhouse to a renovated sprawling estate.

t may come as a surprise to know that the Chicagoland market is one of the largest in the country for landscape services. "The Western Suburbs offer a huge canvas of landscaped neighborhoods with a variety of lot sizes and home styles, presenting a great need for professional landscape and maintenance services,” says the team at Premier Service, Chicago’s “premier” landscape contractor. And they couldn’t be happier to oblige, especially in the area’s most beautiful communities in which they work: Hinsdale, Western Springs, Wheaton, Naperville, Oak Brook, Elmhurst and Glen Ellyn, to name a few. Led by Jason and Aaron Postma, president and vice president, respectively, Premier

There is a strong sense of community and a strong ethic to support local businesses,” the team says. “Our aim is to enrich clients’ lives through the spaces they inhabit.” While the Western Suburbs can best be described as growing, vibrant and friendly, the same can be said of Premier Service, who remains committed to providing the highest level of service and materials. “The excitement and gratitude that our clients express keeps us continuing the hard work year after year,” they say.

A

house hunt is never easy. Aaron and Chrissy Taylor were reminded of this when they decided to leave the city for a more bucolic setting in Winnetka to raise their three daughters. Although the right home failed to present itself, the right lot did. So with a clean slate, they turned to a design team they’d worked with before on a new build. “Once you’ve gone down the custom route, it’s hard to go back,” says interior designer Tracy Hickman, who collaborated on the family’s summer home on Lake Geneva with architect John Myefski and builder Tim Fischer. The team reunited with the couple, which made the project even more enjoyable. “Because they all knew each other, they could be open and honest, which made it more fun,” Chrissy says. The Taylors desired a Shingle-style home, just like their lake house, but with an amped-up sophistication, rather than a cottage-like ambience. Myefski, whose own residence is Shingle style, drew up the plans taking inspiration from

LX_CH49_HOM_Hickmanv2_12.indd 206

Chrissy’s adoration of the home in the 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give. “She loved that look, so we picked up on those elements,” he says. At the family’s end of the neighborhood, gridded streets give way to rambling roads that have allowed for larger estates, most of which are traditional and no more than two stories. “We built to maximize the height but scaled the structure to the first floor, so it’s in keeping with the neighborhood,” Myefski explains. The design allows for some architectural liberty, he adds. “Shingle style uses a lot of symmetry but not so much as, say, Georgian, so it’s really freeing,” Myefski says. “This isn’t your typical house.” For instance, a “secret” staircase links the first-floor master suite to the children’s rooms and play area, located on the opposite side of the second floor. The upstairs guest rooms are on the other side, and in the middle is Chrissy’s cozy study, a perfect space for the family to read at nighttime. “The house works well from a planning perspective,” Myefski says. “It should work well for the next 25 years with how the spaces function.”

O’Brien Harris designed the cabinetry in the kitchen, where the oak flooring, as throughout the home, is from Rode Bros. The backrests of the Liaigre barstools from David Sutherland are upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon fabric from Cowtan & Tout. The range is Wolf, and the Waterstone faucets are from K&B Galleries.

For her part, Hickman’s primary goal was to create a welcoming, cool-hued space that would make entertaining easy and give the wife the urban feel she worried she’d miss. “I was slightly kicking and screaming,” Chrissy admits of moving to the suburbs. “I would have loved to stay in the city, but we’re closer to Lake Geneva now, and it’s great for the girls to have a yard.” Throughout the home, Hickman played off the exterior palette, bringing the gray of the shingles into nearly every room with different saturation levels. Bolder moments of color can be found through pieces like the Alpaca rug that adds shades of greens, blues and purple to the foyer and the Rick Stevens painting that brightens the dining room with splashes of green, yellow and pink. The design was almost intuitive, Hickman explains. “I didn’t create mood boards, because I know the family so well, and Chrissy and I have the same taste,” she says. “They were involved in the decision-making but very trusting, so there wasn’t much back-and-forth.” Working with project manager Annette Zelnick, she made several trips to the Merchandise Mart to outfit the home with an approachable elegant look. “No room was supposed to be too precious—beautiful but not precious,” the interior designer says. She achieved this through elements like the foyer’s suede-upholstered ceiling, the hand-printed Weitzner wallpaper on the living room’s coved ceiling and the kitchen’s custom pewter hood and peekaboo butler’s pantry doors. “Everything feels layered and natural,” she says. “There’s a softness and a sense of history, although I didn’t use a ton of antiques. I went more for contemporary pieces with a nod to the past.”

Just off the kitchen is the family room, where a custom banquette underneath a pendant by The Urban Electric Co. pairs with a Gregorius Pineo table and Liaigre chairs, both upholstered in Liaigre leather from David Sutherland. In the sitting area are Holly Hunt armchairs upholstered in Great Plains fabric. The rug, purchased at Holland & Sherry, and orange pillow fabric are Rosemary Hallgarten.

Hickman created warmth using interesting textures, such as horsehair draperies in the foyer, living room and dining room and hemp wallcoverings in the foyer, living room, master bedroom and powder room. “It feels cocooned,” she says. There are also a few sleights of hand, such as the master bedroom’s mirrored eyebrow window and the home’s floating circular staircase. “It’s freestanding with towering windows, so the railing flows freely from the lower level to the second floor,” Fischer says. “It was one of the most challenging areas of the build.” In the basement, Hickman created a year-round entertaining space with the couple’s daughters in mind. The team recreated the bunkroom from the family’s lake house, this time adding a stage. “The girls and their friends perform shows there,” Chrissy says. “It’s hysterical. While we’re upstairs getting dinner ready, they go down and practice. Then they put on a show for us.” But perhaps the home’s greatest bellwether of welcome change is the arrival of Harley, the family’s Bernedoodle—a new addition the family couldn’t have accommodated in Chicago. “It’s been an interesting exercise for me,” Chrissy says. “I’m not sure I’d have been ready for a dog at our previous homes, so it reinforces how comfortable this house is.”

IN HUMBOLDT PARK, A MULTIMEDIA ARTIST USES A RANGE OF TECHNIQUES AND ELEMENTS TO CREATE CONTEMPLATIVE WORK. WRITTEN BY JAMES MUNN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN

In his Humboldt Park studio (bottom), artist Cleveland Dean (right) creates multimedia works (opposite), including pieces made wood (below) using a shou sugi ban technique.

C

hicago multimedia artist Cleveland Dean can’t remember a time when he wasn’t passionate about art. “I was the type of kid who constantly wanted to go to museums,” he recalls. “At age 9, when my friends were reading comics, I was reading Nietzsche, Freud and Jung. Various forms of art were a way for me to visualize these accounts and ideals.” Years later, after taking his first and only art class at Harrington College of Design, the Southside native began pursuing various mediums in his spare time. “I created a few works simply because I wanted art on my walls before I started collecting,” he says. Friends were soon encouraging him to pursue the discipline professionally, and he launched his full-time career in 2005. Although he has dabbled in photography, sound and film, today Dean focuses on abstract paintings and sculptures that reflect a compelling mixture of simplicity, sophistication, tranquility and chaos. His favorite materials consist of “anything I get my hands on,” he says, including metal, cardboard, tile, netting and rope. The artist’s palette favors black—a color he considers “very undervalued”—and he remains loath to use color for color’s sake. “I am not trying to match a couch,” Dean explains. “I use colors that have a psychological effect on one’s emotions.”

“I ENJOY WORK THAT NEEDS AND INSPIRES CONTEMPLATION. I HAVE NO INTEREST IN EASY, RECOGNIZABLE, NON-CHALLENGING WORK.”

It is this relationship with Dean’s vision and the viewer’s psyche that is key to his artistry. “I enjoy work that needs and inspires contemplation,” he says. “I have no interest in easy, recognizable, non-challenging work. I want to challenge as well as be challenged. I need to be able to exercise my duality.” He points to his use of mixed media—be it sculpture or abstract prints—as examples of this. A self-described workaholic, Dean carries out his explorations in his Humboldt Park studio, where he spends anywhere from eight to 18 hours a day creating. Lately, the artist has developed an interest in shou sugi ban, a Japanese technique of burning wood to preserve it. “I was a bit of a pyrotechnic as a child, so now I can relive that,” he jokes. Laughing matters aside, Dean sees this process as an acknowledgment of preservation that reflects the Japanese culture. “It’s important to me to use materials that have some form of symbolism that spans various eras in human history,” he explains. “These materials create a form of coded language that, esoterically, initiates a conversation with those who are familiar with these histories.” Although rightfully proud of all his varied works, Dean is especially pleased by #theselfproject, part of his larger installation “Recto/Verso: Duality of a Fragile Ego,” which is on view at the Chicago Cultural Center through July 29 and traveling to at least 10 cities around the country this summer. The exhibit consists of 10 mirrored pieces, each with a self-reflecting phrase—such as “THIS ISN’T ME” and “I WORKED HARD FOR THIS”—meant to encourage viewers to take and share selfies on social media. “The response to the project has been phenomenal,” Dean says. “Hundreds of people have identified themselves in the phrases in the mirrors and created an immeasurable number of works of art through their participation.” This audience interaction is what drives Dean, who finds his inspiration in how his productions touch others. “This breeds life in me,” he says. “It makes me dig deeper into my psyche and create. I feel I have a voice, and people have let me know they want to listen.”

hen Brady and Tiffany Ericson returned to America after years of living abroad, they sought to recreate the feeling of Europe’s grand estates on a 2-acre parcel in Michigan. The interior, however, needed to be all about modern living—for generations to come. “Because our three children are budding teenagers, we really wanted to build a home they could visit with their families someday,” Tiffany explains. “We’ve moved so many times, but this is it.” Built with solid blocks of stone, the structure is inspired by the homes in the couple’s last place of residence: Vigo, Spain. “This house is very specific to their DNA,” says interior designer Amy Storm. A porte cochere leads to an open area between the two garages, which face each other, concealed from the street—an ideal place for summer socials, Brady says. Arches, dormers and other architectural accoutrements reinforce the sense of history the house exudes despite its recent construction.

LX_CH49_HOM_Storm_10.indd 224

Designing the home required multiple iterations, explains builder Todd Bergsman, who then sent his ideas to architect Jeff Klatt to officially draw up the plans. But getting the community’s blessing for the project was the most challenging part. “We went in front of a board of 15 people who critiqued, challenged and ultimately approved it,” Bergsman says. “It wasn’t easy.” The result, however, was worth the effort. Accentuating the gray stone exterior, a set of mahogany double doors opens to a luxurious foyer, its walls painted a dark shade of charcoal to complement the marble floor tile. A dramatic crystal chandelier illuminates the space, reflecting softly off the silver-leafed ceiling. “It’s the first impression, and we felt it was very important to create some drama,” Storm says. “It’s also a hint of what’s to come, because we used a variation of that gray color in different places throughout the house.” A gray-and-white herringbone-patterned wallcovering, for example, plays off of the handsome fireplace mantel

In a Michigan home by interior designer Amy Storm, custom mahogany double doors from Bolyard Lumber open to the dramatic foyer, where the walls are painted Gunmetal by Benjamin Moore and a glam Visual Comfort chandelier illuminates a silver-leafed ceiling. The bench, draped with a Surya textile, and table are from Made Goods.

in the formal library, where floor-to-ceiling shelving along one wall is filled with a mix of family photos and pieces the Ericsons have collected during their travels. “This room is a little darker, a little richer,” Storm describes. “Everything about it has been elevated to another level.” Meanwhile, a lighter shade of gray distinguishes the massive island from the classic white perimeter cabinetry in the kitchen—a traditional space with a pillowed marble subway-tile backsplash and a mix of countertops. “Tiffany wanted a bright, light, classic kitchen that would never go out of style,” Storm says. The smaller spaces, on the other hand, were another story. “Tiffany tends to be somewhat traditional, but she really wanted to do something special in the powder room,” the interior designer says. To achieve this, Storm incorporated a black vanity, a graphic grasscloth wallcovering with an ethereal watercolor pattern and a black lacquer mirror studded with crystals.

LX_CH49_HOM_Storm_10.indd 230

Storm charted a similar path in the master bedroom. “Tiffany wanted something a little more feminine, so we added some bling-y details,” she says. Another patterned wallpaper, this one in a purple hue, lines a wall niche. The feature is furnished with a bench but has been designed to fit a king-size headboard, allowing the couple to adjust their furniture layout anytime. A patterned wool-and-silk rug, silky sheets and wool-andfabric window treatments with crystal buttons add to the soothing atmosphere. The final look incorporates all the Ericsons’ wishes for their European-style residence, Tiffany says. “It really has a Greek or Spanish feel,” she says. And with plenty of spaces for guests to relax inside and outside, the couple has no doubt their children will want to visit for years to come. “The big question,” Brady jokes, “is whether we’ll ever get them to leave.”

5/16/18 11:45 AM

Opposite: Framed in a recessed wall niche decorated with Ann Sacks tile, a sculptural BainUltra soaker tub epitomizes the relaxing environment Storm envisioned for her clients. “The heated marble floors are the icing on the cake, she says. The wall color is Intense White by Benjamin Moore. Below: Texture, sheen and a subtle purple palette evoke a sense of serenity in the master bedroom, which is furnished with a Hickory Chair bed. A Brewster wallcovering decorates the recessed niche, and a Crystorama light crowns the space.

A

fter many years in Lincoln Park, a family of four decided it was time for more space in a move to the North Shore. Upon finding the perfect property to start anew, they sought the expertise of designer Jenna Wedemeyer, architect Mandy Brown, builder John Dragic and landscape architect Dave Heller. When the clients first approached Wedemeyer, they knew exactly what they didn’t want. “I showed her decor of our Chicago home and pointed out what I didn’t like,” the wife recalls. The discussion revealed to Wedemeyer how she could

LX_CH49_HOM_Wedemeyer_12.indd 235

carry out the owners’ vision: a timeless residence with defined rooms that still has an open, airy quality. The team began by configuring the two-floor structure to maximize light and create distinct areas. Wedemeyer gave each room definition using texture and pattern, notably through materials with a touch of gloss that take advantage of the ample natural light provided by mullioned windows. “There is a metallic sheen to the upholstery and in the wallpaper,” she says. For instance, the designer chose a metallic cork for the living room to bring “a little bit of shine and reflection in everything,” she says.

5/16/18 11:32 AM

To create a symmetrical space in the family room, Wedemeyer paired a white-oak plinth coffee table from The Dovetail Joynt with a custom Kravet sofa and chairs. Corbin Bronze table lamps from Holly Hunt and a Noir quartz-and-antique-brass cocktail table add warmth to the otherwise cool-hued room.

5/16/18 12:47 PM

The dining room’s damask wallpaper is also a metallic cork, and more drama comes into play thanks to a leopard-print wallpaper in the powder room. But the glamour doesn’t take away from the fact this house is meant to be lived in, as evident in the upholstery on much of the furniture. “We chose indoor-outdoor fabrics throughout, so the family can walk inside, barefoot from the patio, and sit on anything,” Wedemeyer says. The kitchen and the breakfast nook are the most minimal areas in the home because of the abundant use of white. “A white kitchen never goes out of style,” Wedemeyer says. “But if you look closely, the glam is still there.” She chose fixtures that add subtle textural changes, including a bar backsplash in a pewter-metallic subway tile, while

LX_CH49_HOM_Wedemeyer_12.indd 240

dark polished-nickel lanterns and the contrasting island are welcome pops of color. Although the space is open to assimilate with the rest of the residence, it is also sealed off from the adjacent mudroom and dining room, rejecting the open kitchen style that has become popular. The structure has a natural flow thanks to Brown, who found a thoughtful way to create a spacious floor plan ideal for the family, with or without guests. Instead of relying solely on walls to define spaces, she used volumetric variations and ceiling details as forms of separation. Arched soffits on the first-floor entryways mark room transitions, while coffered ceilings create a warmer ambience in the family room and the entryway. In the master bedroom, vaulted ceilings differentiate the sleeping area from a sitting room.

Restrained glamour was the underlying theme for living room, where metallic-cork Thibaut wallpaper sets the stage. Eli-Wyn Upholstery re-covered the clients’ chairs in Romo fabric and their sofa in Pindler material. A glass-and-metal coffee table from One Kings Lane and a Stark rug complete the space.

The wife’s office was inspired by a set of six photogravures by Karl Blossfeldt. The client’s existing desk and chairs sit on a rug from Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, and Visual Comfort’s Hampton pendant hangs above.

5/16/18 4:08 PM

The house’s strategic use of space and texture is established in the entryway, which Brown produced with Wedemeyer, Dragic and the clients. “In our philosophy,” she says, “the entrance is the most important part of the house. You want to draw the eye to the entry.” A custom cast-stone portal and arched front door greets visitors. Once inside, panelized-wood wainscoting extends to the second floor, emphasizing verticality but tempered by coffered ceilings. A custom chandelier hangs in the foyer above patterned off-white and pewter-black tile—a color scheme repeated throughout the home and inspired by the brindle coat of the family dog.

LX_CH49_HOM_Wedemeyer_12.indd 242

The foyer’s L-shaped staircase was meticulously considered by Dragic. “We wanted to design a staircase that fit the space and looked light,” he says, a look he achieved through railings and balusters that lack angles and turns. The space also provides a view all the way to the backyard. “Through the back doors, the patio became an extension of the family room,” Brown says. “It’s basically an exterior family space.” There, a pergola and a fire table create an outside living space with views of the native plants installed by Heller. The final result is effective and playful, and its versatility means each room is lived in to the fullest. “This house represents us,” the wife says. “It truly feels like our home.”

5/16/18 4:09 PM

Opposite: A Victoria + Albert soaker tub from Ferguson serves as the centerpiece of the master bathroom, where a dramatic Visual Comfort chandelier suspends over the Thassos marble-and-shell floor tiles. Below: The master bedroom’s muted color palette, established by Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter on the walls and a Stark carpet, sets the tone as a place for respite. Eli-Wyn Upholstery re-covered the clients’ bed in a Fabricut velvet.
