ON THE COVER: At a Scottsdale home renovated by interior designers John G. Martin and David P. Turner, landscape designer Chad Norris refined the entryway garden originally conceived by landscape designer Jared Morris. Slated for a modest remodel, the house underwent a bigger overhaul once Martin and Turner shared their ideas for a more modern interior. EDITOR’S LETTER
ART form Our art director worked up this layout and sent it to me for approval as I was about to sit down to write my editor’s letter. The first thought that came to mind when I saw the page was that everything here was made by artisans...well, except me and Los Angeles designer and shop owner Patrick Dragonette, that is! Design is at its best when original-thinking makers and artisans are involved in the process. Just consider what’s come to life from the creatives on this page: hand-painted, recolored textiles from Brunschwig & Fils’ design director Danielle St. George; artist Wayne Pate’s Trois Blooms wallpaper for Studio Four, Silvia Furmanovich’s hand-painted earrings inspired by Indian miniatures, and Fornace Mian’s artisan-made Murano glass Chioggia flutes for Artemest. At Luxe, we champion those who take pencil to paper (as well as techie types who are into three-dimensional modeling) to create something that makes us take notice. I encourage you to appreciate their handiwork and to support the arts, decorative and otherwise.

ELIZABETH VON DER GOLTZ
Global Buying Director at Net-a Porter
As global buying director of London-based e-tailer Neta-Porter, Elizabeth von der Goltz searches the world for the latest luxury fashion finds. “From a purely work perspective, we cover as much as we can globally. We're in all the major cities for the fashion weeks, and other markets, such as Sydney; Seoul, South Korea; Copenhagen, Denmark and Tbilisi, Georgia,” she says. One scroll through her Instagram feed and you’ll see edgy-glam street-style shots from those scouting trips, as well as a running travelogue of von der Goltz’s sun-saturated pleasure destinations. “The fashion world is so visual. There’s so much stimulation all the time that sometimes you need to just clear your mind, and go hiking or meditate,” she says. One of the places von der Goltz escapes to is Thailand. “I love the energy of Bangkok. The Buddhist people have this lovely warmth and spirituality. You can relax on a lazy boat ride down a river or go to a ramshackle, chaotic open market— you see things you don’t see anywhere else.” It’s that promise of a rare find that makes it hard for von der Goltz to shut off her buyer’s brain. “I’m constantly seeking out the obscure sandal maker or an undiscovered designer. Even when I’m on vacation, the wheels are still turning,” she says.
Two years ago, Brazilian jewelry designer Silvia Furmanovich saw an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art that stuck with her. “Divine Pleasures: Painting from India’s Rajput Courts” assembled a vast anthology of opaque watercolors commissioned by the royal courts of Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills between the 16th and 19th centuries. Not only did the paintings’ depictions of exotic myths and legends capture her imagination, but so too did the artists’ technique, which showed an astounding attention to minute detail. Not long after that, she embarked on a 40-day trip to India to explore the country’s art and culture firsthand. “India is the most incredible place, especially Rajasthan, where the colors and decorative embellishments were unlike anything I’d ever experienced,” says Furmanovich. “In terms of architecture, Mughal and Oriental influences mix together, creating layers of rich ornamentation, so your eye never rests. From inlaid marble patterns to carpet designs, there are ideas on every surface.” As she explored the country’s decorative arts traditions, she began to formulate ideas for her latest line of jewelry. The result: Breathtaking tableaux are hand-painted in miniature on a single earring, and flowering vines rendered in wood marquetry adorn evening clutches. Rudraksha seeds, used as prayer beads and temple offerings, become organic statement earrings while inlaid gemstones create delicate scenes on many of the pieces. “If it weren’t for travel, this India Collection would not exist,” says Furmanovich. “Also, if I didn’t go anywhere, I wouldn’t have such interesting stories to tell!”

If you’re on the hunt for high-end conversation starters in the interior design world, few places satisfy quite like Creel and Gow in New York. The Upper East Side boutique has long been a destination for the style set seeking curious objets, such as a taxidermy albino peacock or a model of the Royal Brighton Pavilion made of matchsticks. These intriguing finds are often the fruits of extensive travels by Paris-based owner Jamie Creel. “Exploration is crucial to finding new inspiration,” says Creel. “I think most of my best ideas come when I’m on holiday.” To recharge, Creel heads to his house in Tangier. One of the oldest riads in the bustling Moroccan port city, it is where British naval administrator and parliamentarian Samuel Pepys wrote one of his many diaries over 300 years ago. Creel bought the property from American interior design icon Charles Sevigny 10 years ago. “The home is located at the highest point of the old city,” says Creel. “My favorite space to relax is a canvas-covered terrace that overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar.” When Creel ventures out, he strolls the medina in search of treasures for his shop. “Wandering through the narrow, almost medieval streets is like taking a trip back in time,” he says. “The beautiful thing about Morocco is that if you have an idea for something, there is usually a skilled craftsperson nearby who can make it.” Recently, he commissioned a metalworker to create brass lamps and a textile maker to weave pom-pom bedspreads for the shop. It’s hardly surprising that a place with so many artisans would attract creative types. “With its grittiness and authenticity, Tangier has always been a magnet for artists, writers and actors,” says Creel. “I think there must be more decorators with second homes here than any other place in the world.”

WOVEN HISTORY KRAVET TOASTS A MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY AND CELEBRATES GLOBAL INSPIRATION THROUGH AN ECLECTIC NEW COLLECTION. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG YOUNG
LX_COM20_Radar_Launch_Kravet.indd 72
There are few greater accomplishments in the fast-moving and ever-changing design trade than making it to the seasoned age of 100. This year the Kravet company hits that mark, having grown from a small fabric house to an industry leader, acquiring historic brands such as Brunschwig & Fils, GP & J Baker and Lee Jofa along the way. The fifth-generation family business is built on an unwavering passion for textiles that propels the Kravets to seek out some of the world’s most elusive archival prints and patterns. It should come as no surprise, then, that the company’s latest collection is inspired by travel.
Named for Jeanne Baret, the 18th-century French explorer who was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, the Baret Collection (shown here), released under the Brunschwig & Fils label, takes its cues from various exotic ports of call. For example, rural scenes of the Far East spring to life in the Xian print, and colorful medallions dance on a Central Indian-inspired suzani pattern. The global tour continues with bold African animal prints and Kashmir-inspired paisleys, resulting in a rich collection that blends an old-world aesthetic with modern, bohemian élan. “The story of Jeanne Baret resonated with

us because travel inspires so many of our designers,” says Cary Kravet, president of the company. “One of the great luxuries of life is to see other cultures, styles and traditions.” That globe-trotting is often done by Cary’s brother, Scott Kravet, who is chief creative director. A fiber expert, he searches the world for antique prints to add to the working archive, which is, according to Cary, “an impressive accumulation of decorative arts and textiles from around the world, heavily influenced by English, French and Asian design.” Having all of that history at one’s fingertips provides an endless stream of daily creative inspiration: “Most of our designs draw on an element or two from our archive,” Cary adds. Holding the keys to such a jaw-dropping archival collection is just one example of Kravet’s evolution from humble trimmings shop on Manhattan’s Lower East Side to design industry powerhouse. In fact, earlier this year, to celebrate its centenary, the company released the Modern Tailor collection, a nod to the brothers' great-
LX_COM20_Radar_Launch_Kravet.indd 74
grandfather, Samuel Kravet, who launched the business in 1918. “He started out as a tailor with nothing but a dream and an incredible work ethic, then moved into selling tassels and tiebacks for the home, before finally transitioning into upholstery fabrics,” says Cary. “His drive and perseverance are what Kravet is built on, and there’s no better way to honor him than with a special collection.”
The anniversary festivities don’t end there. The company recently relaunched its website and is busy working with Vendome Press on a book that fetes trailblazing designers of the last 100 years to tie in with the centennial. After that? Possibly a breather. Says Cary, “By the end of the year, we may need a nice long vacation from all the celebrating!”

PAPER MATES
THE DUO BEHIND JUPITER 10 LEADS US ON A WORLD TOUR THROUGH THEIR VIBRANT WALLCOVERINGS.
WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER
For more than 10 years, London-based designers Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke created groundbreaking digital prints in the fashion world, winning critical accolades and the patronage of chic and sartorially adventurous women. Former First Lady Michelle Obama, Rihanna and Iris Apfel have all donned the Basso & Brooke label, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has archived their work. Last year, the duo waded into the interior design world with Jupiter 10, their brand of modernist wallcoverings. Thirty new patterns, all named for international destinations, have since been added. Here, they talk to us about travel as an inspiration and how digital technology is redefining luxury. Every wallpaper is named for a city. What inspired you about these locales? BB: The ideas for the patterns came from revisiting our fragmented memories of places we’ve been that left an impression—a small detail of a traditional Japanese confectionery we had in a tea room in Kyoto, Japan; a marquetry floor in a grand ballroom in Vienna; a cactus garden in Tulum, Mexico; or a faraway view of a fortress in the Amman, Jordan desert, for example. Is there a place you never tire of visiting? BB: Portugal is a fascinating country with an extensive history of pattern. Right now, we’re restoring a 100-year-old house in the Portuguese countryside and are constantly amused by the color palettes of the beautiful azulejo tiles and the exteriors of houses. The combinations are eccentric but sophisticated. CB: Broadly, Japan has always inspired us; there’s an inherent mystique and history of pattern in the country's fine papers and textiles. 076 / luxesource.com

Your wallpapers read as maximalist, yet the inspiration is often minimalist midcentury modern. How do you strike that balance? BB: We were never interested in recreating a pastiche of midcentury modern designs in new colorways. We’ve always taken our cues from masters like Frank Lloyd Wright, Lina Bo Bardi, Gio Ponti and the Bauhaus—those who distill ideas and express a bolder visual message. CB: The Jupiter 10 patterns may read as maximalist, but they're composed of very simplified shapes and forms; we think the playful colorways add a strong contemporary appeal. Has digital printing changed the process? BB: On the technical side, new machines have higher color accuracy and resolution. New inks have more vibrant hues. Silk and grass cloth can now be embellished digitally. On the creative side, there's more freedom, color precision and speed in making a sample. You instantly see results and that can be very inspiring. CB: The process is also a much more environmentally friendly affair than traditional methods. The printing inks are water-based and our non-woven substrates are made from recycled materials. There is very little waste compared to the old way of printing wallpaper.
photos: courtesy jupiter 10.
Speaking of papers and textiles, how does designing wallpaper differ from fashion? BB: The fashion industry gave us a unique insight into trends. Collections are presented at least twice a year, so we were forced to be very prolific with new designs. The interior design world has a longer shelf life; prints transcend seasons. With wallcoverings, we are able to create something with lasting appeal.
Christened for the exotic locales that inspired them, Jupiter 10's modernist wallpapers feature bold patterns. Doha (above, left), Fez (above, right) and Delft (right) are just a few examples in the global collection.
How is technology transforming the concept of luxury goods, which are often handmade? CB: Digital printing allows us to tailor products to a client’s wishes with far less minimum quantities required. We recently completed a project for Dimore Studio at the Arts Club in London. They wanted our Nairobi design printed onto a textured grass cloth. We often receive requests from design studios, architects and interior designers who require very specific colorways. With the digital process, we can customize color by matching to Pantone references. This adds a luxury aspect where the final design is made specifically for the client. What’s next for Jupiter 10? CB: Right now, we’re focusing on wallpapers, working on the best worldwide distribution, but we’ll be looking to expand into coordinating rugs, upholstery fabrics, tiles and china in the near future.

As Scottsdale’s oldest design firm, Est Est Inc.—founded in 1959—has spent decades leaving its mark on some of the area’s best residences and public projects, including the Phoenix Zoo, television sets and local showhouses. Its reputation has continued to build since designer Tony Sutton took the helm as president and owner in 1984, bringing his expertise to spaces ranging from traditional to contemporary styles. We recently caught up with him to tap into his insight and find out what stokes his creativity. estestinc.com What design trends are you noticing in Arizona? The biggest change recently is a move from ultra-contemporary to a light, airy and soft Santa Barbara style with just a touch of contemporary design. The look is elegant, timeless and clean, with a neutral palette featuring warmer woods. Do you have a design muse? My family and I often travel to Europe, Canada and throughout the United States, so you could say I find my inspiration through wanderlust. Our designs are inspired by a variety of genres, including modern and European styles. What are the projects that you are excited about working on this summer? Our design team is working on custom contemporary homes in Desert Mountain and Santa Barbara as well as some traditional style homes in Paradise Valley. 82 / luxesource.com

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Arizona Biennial, the state’s longest-running juried exhibition, hosted by the Tucson Museum of Art. On display July 6 through September 16, the show features 84 pieces including video, sculpture, painting, works on paper, photography and installations by 70 artists around the state. Among those on display are interpretations of the urban American West by Phoenix oil painter Laura Spalding Best, local photography by Flagstaff’s Joe Cornett and dusky neighborhood scenes by Phoenix painter Cam Decaussin. “The biennial collection shows contemporary art in Arizona is competitive with the rest of the nation in quality while reflecting our state’s unique sense of place and culture,” says Julie Sasse, the museum’s chief curator and curator of modern and contemporary art. tucsonmuseumofart.org

“My grandmother always knew I would have a flower shop one day,” says Megan Carollo, owner and lead designer of Flower Bar. “She was right.” Before opening her Old Town Scottsdale shop in 2012, Carollo spent years apprenticing with florists across the country. Eclectic sources such as gardens and architecture inspire her. In 2017, she expanded her emporium, creating what she says is “a unique, botanically inspired floral studio, full of pieces by awesome Arizona artists and objects inspired by Mother Nature.” She also added a workshop space that allows her to share her passion for flowers with customers who want to learn about arranging. Grandma would have approved. azflowerbar.com

INSIDE EDITION LUXE ASKED FOUR ARIZONA BUILDERS TO SHARE SOME OF THE MATERIALS THEY PREFER TO USE FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES.
“Reclaimed materials are great indoors, as are engineered wood floors with hard finishes that stand up to wear. Porcelain tiles are also indestructible and easy to care for, and anything with low-VOC off-gassing is important as well. Outside, natural-stone flooring and pavers can really extend the living spaces visually. Many limestone and travertine surfaces are relatively cool in the sun and look so inviting. The other ‘natural’ item we use a lot: shaded areas. Covered patios are an important part of outdoor living here.”
“Inside, new porcelain-floor products used with high-end engineered floors is a look many people want today. Manmade quartz countertop materials also give a sleek, clean appearance. And as much glass as possible allows that interior-exterior feel. Because of Arizona’s extreme climate, I love a bright white exterior finish composed of white porcelain pavers or limestone and whiteplaster or pebble-sheen pool finishes. When it’s really hot in the middle of the Arizona summer, these materials sure help.”
“A concrete topping can save the day indoors. The floors look like brand new concrete, and they allow us to insert zinc accent bands at door thresholds and corners. The result is a beautiful, monolithic appearance that is a breeze to keep clean. Also, coral stone is an outdoor product that has been around for a while. It combines the look and aesthetic appeal of stone and is non-slip, all while being cooler than concrete pool decking, real stone or pavers.”
“For interiors, glass remains one of my favorite materials. From glass wine walls and shower surrounds to glass elevators and three-sided fireplaces, I love the clean feeling and openness it creates in any space. And for outdoor spaces, some of my favorite materials to incorporate are the new solidsurface products like Geoluxe and Neolith. They give a clean and modern look but are also elegant and timeless. They make durable outdoor countertops and gorgeous accent walls.”

ARCADIA PUBLIC MARKET Opened late last year in Phoenix’s pleasantly posh Arcadia neighborhood, Arcadia Public Market is a welcoming spot filled with natural light and an array of stylish vignettes showcasing the most current home and design products. We spoke with owner Kim Anderson to learn more about the chic shopping spot and the uniquely curated goods inside. arcadiapublicmarket.com
What makes your shop special? We have a mix of home furnishings and gifts from emerging artists and designers as well as locally sourced items. Nowhere else in the Valley will you find the same case goods, upholstered furniture, artwork and accessories. Each piece is sourced from travels around the U.S. and abroad. We also offer design services in-house via our Arcadia Design Group.
Why did you decide to launch the store? We felt this city was lacking casual, approachable home decor that reflected current design trends emanating from both the east and west coasts. Although Phoenix is close to Los Angeles, we’ve always been a bit isolated in terms of home and lifestyle goods, and we really wanted to provide that up-to-date aesthetic to the Valley.
What’s on the floor right now: We have upholstered furniture by the likes of Lee Industries and Baker. Many are covered in linen or leather. Case goods are by Currey and Company, Arteriors and Interlude Home. Accessories come from Arteriors, Interlude and Noir. And for those who don’t see what they want, we have a 5,000 square-foot warehouse where we keep additional inventory.

BLUEPRINT UPCOMING HOTELS
NEW AND REDESIGNED PROPERTIES ARE EXPANDING ARIZONA’S LUXURY HOTEL SCENE. WE CHECK OUT THE HOTELS AND RESORTS YOU’LL WANT TO CHECK IN TO.
Scheduled to open in March, the Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley will offer 200 suites, casitas and bungalows, each marked by deep overhangs and connected in a village-like form through walkways and courtyard gardens. Designed by Washington, D.C., firm Monogram, the property will play up its locale through clean forms and a palette of desert neutrals. Among the architectural highlights: a water feature in the lobby, which will overlook Camelback Mountain, that flows to the spa, and the bragging rights of having one of the longest resort pools in North America, spanning nearly 400 feet. ritzcarlton.com
▼ ARRIVE PHOENIX Next year, the Arrive boutique hotel chain will open its third location and first in Arizona, giving Uptown Phoenix its only dining, entertainment and hotel venue. Developed by Phoenix firms Vintage Partners and Venue Projects, the boutique property will come in the form of two midcentury-modern mid-rises merging into a 79-room stay with a rooftop cocktail bar. The structure is intended to include nods to the work of notable Valley-area architects who left their mark in the 1950s, while interiors will exhibit the work of local artists. arriveenterprises.com

▲ WESTIN TEMPE With an expected opening date of May 1, The Westin Tempe has broken ground and will rise 18 stories in the downtown area. Capped with a rooftop pool and lounge, the project is led by Tempe-based RSP Architects, which will inject a modern look to the 290 rooms, including five suites spanning the 17th floor. Materials like brick, steel and glass will define the structure, and accommodations will boast customdesigned furniture, wallcoverings and carpeting for a one-of-a-kind look. westin.marriott.com
▲ CIVANA In March, the Carefree Resort and Conference Center reopened as the 189-room Civana, the Phoenix area’s first wellness resort. Scottsdale’s 3rd Story handled the architecture and interior design and was careful to respect the 1964 midcentury-modern architecture by Joe Wong, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. Civana’s ethos of health and wellbeing extends to its redesign, which focuses on energy efficiency as well as natural colors and materials influenced by the Sonoran Desert such as stone, wood, metal and glass. Strategically, beds are placed in middle of each room to take advantage of north and west mountain views. civanacarefree.com

BAROQUE BEAUTY
Situated in Cernobbio, a province of Como, Italy, is Villa d’Este, a hotel that has entertained noble men and women, scholars, artists, writers and financiers. Originally built as a convent in the 15th century, Villa d’Este has changed over the centuries to reflect its owners. The nymphaeum (shown here) stands the test of time as an example of Baroque style with its multicolored pebble mosaic, sculpture depicting Hercules and Lichas, box hedges, flower beds, cypresses, and laurel. The nymphaeum represents an ode to nature in an intricate and artful way.

DESERT MIRAGE
Rising from a desolate, rocky landscape in Joshua Tree, California, is a three-bedroom house made of shipping containers. Designed by architect James Whitaker for a client in the film industry, the residence sits on a 90-acre mountainside plot of land where stormwater created a gully. The shipping containers are oriented to maximize views and provide privacy, where needed, and solar panels on the roof of the garage power the building. This futuristic, space-age home sparks our search for edgy pieces fit for desert life.

The Oberholz alpine hut mimics its natural surroundings with saddleback roofs that seem to curve into the mountainside of the Italian Dolomites in the Alps. The restaurant's minimalist faรงade is a purposeful tribute created by architects Peter Pichler and Pavol Mikolajcak to further emphasize the overpowering quality of the natural beauty of the Alps. Taking cues from the angular architecture, these items showcase simplistic structures with glitzy touches.

Christopher Guy, Cyrillic Mirror
Stacy Garcia Stacy Garcia, Inc. Nanuet, NY “Mixed materials, asymmetrical pieces, and interesting carved facades were dominant trends at High Point this spring. Bernhardt outdid itself with the Smithson Credenza. Its captivating cubist planes and acid-etched metals spoke to me. Christopher Guy’s modern Cyrillic Mirror is exceptional. Each piece is sculpted with polished-edge mirror panes, while a mirrorless center sparks visual interest.”

“My favorite find this market is Alfonso Marina’s Aarhus Chair—its slim wood frame with wicker detailing, upholstered cushions and brass accents feels fresh, yet timeless. I was also mesmerized by Roberta Schilling’s new outdoor collection, featuring whimsical shapes and fun, neutral color combinations. The Midas Swing Chair will add a pop of personality to any outdoor space!”
Dunes and Duchess, Equator Mirror
Jeffrey Johnson Jeffrey Design, LLC Dallas, TX & Los Angeles, CA “I spotted a myriad of innovative, new resources at High Point Market, but two stood out. Henredon’s Camilla Chair, inspired by 1940’s architecture, is top-notch exquisite. Designed by David Kleinberg, its elegant form put me in a state of awe. My second favorite is the Equator Mirror by Dunes and Duchess—it’s perfect for indoor or outdoor living.”

INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER STEWARTRODRIGUEZ.COM
First impression: It's a conversation piece that makes me want to learn more about the designer, inspiration and construction. I can relate to… Giancarlo Valle. I'm Puerto Rican but spent 30 years working in various cities, like New York and Miami. Heritage has many layers of traditions, cultures and monuments that influence your perspective and approach to design. There is a slight resemblance to… Mayan style from the soft curves throughout the base and seat, yet the colors are very cosmopolitan. The vertical lines give a strong sense of modernism. On material: There are so many great layers: The shearling, linen and Italian mohair are the perfect luxurious blend. I already see them in… a monochromatic, eclectic home with a blend of vintage and modern pieces in shades of cream or a living room with a soft palette and navy accents. Global design is… the present and the future. The projects I enjoy the most are spaces that celebrate global heritage and blend cultures and ways of living in one space.

LOVE SEATS THE PIECE: Smile Seats THE DESIGNER: Giancarlo Valle FIND IT: giancarlovalle.com THE INSPIRATION: Growing up in North, Central and South America gave Giancarlo Valle a well-rounded outlook on design. Valle always considers the context of the pieces he creates—giving them a presence that won’t overpower the spaces they inhabit. The Smile Seats exhibit those qualities: They have their own posture and style, emanating modernity without sterility. At once armchairs and benches that can seat two apiece, they transcend typical furniture archetypes.

BENCH WARMER THE PIECE: Dasher Bench with Pierre Frey Fabric THE DESIGNER: Kate McIntyre and Brad Huntzinger FIND IT: ironies.com THE INSPIRATION: Designers Kate McIntyre and Brad Huntzinger have made organic references and natural motifs a signature in their contemporary furniture designs. The cast brass base of the Dasher Bench has an antiqued bronze finish, giving the curvature of the legs a masculine gravitas. Upholstered with a toile fabric titled Plateau/Pampa by French textile house Pierre Frey, this iteration of the design juxtaposes traditional and contemporary elements.
JORGE CASTILLO INTERIOR DESIGNER JORGECASTILLO.COM
The Dasher Bench… reminds me of the landscape that I used to experience as a child in some parts of Mexico. It’s very organic. Thinking globally: The frame is by an American company and the fabric is French, depicting an Argentinian countryside. I would call this a perfect marriage of international design. Heritage is… very important when designing for an international audience. Design journey: I am originally from Mexico, and after graduating from college, I moved to Cleveland, Ohio. In 1998, I opened my design firm. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work on both residential and commercial projects throughout the United States. In 2009, with the intention of reconnecting to my Latin American roots, I moved to Miami. I stay true to… my core design philosophy. However, I like to introduce materials and finishes associated with the local culture and the client’s heritage. I imagine… this piece living in a space that I designed in a Colorado modern home, sitting in front of a roaring fireplace, at the foot of a bed or in an entry hall.

TECTONIC SHIFT THE PIECE: Jardinière THE DESIGNER: Armand Jonckers FIND IT: maisongerard.com THE INSPIRATION: Born to a French mother and a Belgian father in 1939, Armand Jonckers has spent much of his life traveling the world as an antiquarian, sculptor, engraver, decorator and mineralogist. His modular coffee table represents his multihyphenate identity in its dynamic construction, etchings reminiscent of ancient script and use of solid brass. The two pieces of Jardinière can shift together or apart, revealing a vessel in the center for a plant.

FRANCIS D’HAENE
ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER DAPOSTROPHE.COM
I am captivated by… the geometric shapes and swirling etchings on Jonckers' Jardinière. I imagine… this being a conversation piece, placed between two beautiful sofas in front of a fireplace, with an orchid in the center, creating that intimate setting. Taking risks… like Jonckers' use of geometric shapes in the design of this table, should be thoughtful and intentional. If done correctly, risks can really pay off like they did here. Being Belgian: Much of my design inspiration stems from the Belgian design influence I was exposed to in my earlier years. And even to this day with architects and designers like Vincent Van Duysen and Axel Vervoordt, it’s hard to deny their global impact on the design community. Family ties: My father owned a small glass and mirror business and my mother was involved in the arts, so I’ve been exposed to the art and design world from an early age. After graduating… from Sint-Lukas in Brussels, I moved to New York to pursue my design career and gain experience within the international design community.

ROYAL PALM THE PIECE: Alexandria Lamp THE DESIGNER: Syrette Lew FIND IT: mvngmtns.com THE INSPIRATION: Moving Mountains, the studio of American designer Syrette Lew, pays tribute to the ever-changing archipelago of her native Hawaii, and her Alexandria Lamp is an ode to the palm lamps of the 1960s and 1970s with a modern twist. Lew’s furniture, accessories and jewelry explore unique amorphous shapes and playful color and material choices. Her history of designing for a mass-market furniture brand inspires an approach that is holistic and thoughtful. Though many of her designs are statement pieces, Lew is concerned with creating durable work that will last for generations.
STEPHANIE HAUPTLI
INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER HAUPTLIHAUS.COM
The Alexandria Lamp… is a silent showstopper. You have to stop for a little flirt with this piece. It’s begging to be noticed. I can imagine it… on a bar cart in a dining or living room, in a private movie screening room or at an entry as a focal piece on a commode. It is so well-designed… that it could integrate in many different interiors. It’s not loud… but it’s definitely prominent. On discovering worldly finds: Looking for treasures while traveling is my favorite way to find pieces. But, more than not, I find myself turning to 1stdibs where you can find great pieces from all corners of the world and easily communicate with vendors. Taking risks… is very important, if not essential, to growing as a designer. In doing so, you avoid becoming a cut and paste designer. Growing up… around a lot of history in Europe gave me a deep appreciation for vintage pieces and buildings, which inspires me to design with longevity in mind.

FRENCH CONNECTION THE PIECE: Reine Lamps THE DESIGNER: Aurélie Chapelle and David Machado, Chape & Mache FIND IT: rochebobois.com THE INSPIRATION: French brands Roche Bobois and Chape & Mache collaborated on the design of these graphic light fixtures. “Reine” translates from French to “queen,” which is why these whimsical lamps have a distinctly royal feel. Inspired by the gadroon pleating of ruffled collars from Renaissance fashion, the three-dimensional fabric, folded and pleated, creates a cascading light that illuminates interiors. Utilizing a fashion statement of the past, Chape & Mache “dresses” the light by channeling its waves through modern materials.

GREG NATALE INTERIOR DESIGNER GREGNATALE.COM
First impression: Their purpose isn't immediately obvious; they could evoke blooming flowers, bursting fireworks or even period costume. The scale and ambiguity of this design really catches my eye. The French… offer a very unique point of view with their design. The term avant-garde sums up that sensibility perfectly! One of my favorite things to do… is hit the vintage and flea markets in France. I am in Paris quite a lot and I never pass up the opportunity to visit the markets or trawl through some of the vintage galleries. On his origins: My parents emigrated to Australia from Italy in the 1950s so the European aesthetic is something that really resonates with me. These pieces are… definitely statement or almost art pieces. I love that they can help finish a room by adding balance to an area that might feel empty. Great design… always causes some sort of reaction.

SUN SCREEN THE PIECE: Flamengo Screen THE DESIGNER: Antonio da Motta Leal and Alexander Lamont FIND IT: alexanderlamont.com THE INSPIRATION: Bangkok-based Alexander Lamont is equally inspired by the East and West, developing collections that pay tribute to meticulous craftsmanship and fine materials found in nature. Lamont worked with Brazilian designer Antonio da Motta Leal to design this towering screen, which is over 6 feet tall and features silvered straw marquetry and Koto veneer. The Flamengo Screen was inspired by urban art at Copacabana Beach created by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, whose curling pavement mosaics are iconic to Rio de Janeiro.
KATHARINE POOLEY INTERIOR DESIGNER KATHARINEPOOLEY.COM
Déjà vu: I'm reminded of the flowing, organic Henry Moore Sculpture Two Large Forms. Much like Moore’s work, this screen is inherently sculptural with a gentle undulation, combined with the peachy patina of the starburst straw marquetry, creating a feminine softness to the large interlocking pieces. This work aptly reflects… fearless, exuberant Brazilian design, which is unafraid of striking shapes and embraces playful detail and highly stylized midcentury form. The finish denotes Alexander Lamont’s elegant pieces. There is nothing as exciting… as finding rare and unique objets d’art in far-flung locations. I recently found new suppliers of incredible semi-precious stones and marbles in Amsterdam; crystal in the Czech Republic; and the best leather in northern Italy. I’d place this piece… in a client’s majestic villa in Kuwait among their unique collection of Far East antiques and relics, which has inspired me, but I'm also adding midcentury and bespoke pieces for a little contemporary elegance and to make space for the heavier antiques to breathe.

With thoughtful designs and an ongoing commitment to technological advancement, the company elevates the kitchen hood from a purely utilitarian appliance to an eye-catching, artful centerpiece blending form and function at its finest. “Through our products, design partnerships, and innovative technology, we hope to define the kitchen as the center of self-expression, family and well-being,” says Luke Siow, president of Zephyr.

INN VOGUE DESIGNERS TAKE CUES FROM LUXURY HOTELS FOR THESE HIGH-STYLE KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MIMI FAUCETT
It’s no secret that designers source inspiration for their residential projects from the elements and architectural approaches found within the world’s leading hotels. For this kitchen in Brentwood, California, Vanessa Alexander of Alexander Design turned to the interior concepts of the Greenwich Hotel in New York and the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles to spur her imagination. “The client wanted a masculine, contemporary space that evoked the golden days of Hollywood,” says Alexander. “I wanted to mix the history and the vibe of downtown New York with the glam but laid-back essence of Los Angeles, which is very similar to his personality.” The outcome is a welcoming, open space hinting at the two chic properties. Similarly, on the following pages, you’ll find bold, graphic kitchen palettes; tranquil spa baths; a bespoke apothecary line; chic, avant-garde accessories and more, all inspired by trailblazing hospitality work from around the globe. DESIGN DISPATCHES FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER
FOREIGN AFFAIRS In her 1980 book, Allure, legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland proclaimed, “The eye has to travel,” emphasizing the importance of visual stimulation in the creative world. Surely, one of the best ways to kick out the doldrums is to change up your surroundings. This year our travel-themed report visits perennial design destinations, such as Paris, as well as places farther afield. We found that Tokyo remains a fascinating crossroads of ancient Edo culture and all things shiny and new, while a vibrant and unifying art scene is thriving in South Africa’s major cities. Finally, Cuba, with a newly installed president and an exhilarating artisan and maker movement, boasts designers who continue to eye the future with an optimistic spirit.

1 SUITE TREAT Under her firm Chzon, French designer Dorothée Meilichzon is responsible for some of the most photogenic hotels and restaurants in Paris. Her atmospheric, unpretentious spaces use pattern play and elegant materials, such as marble and brass, to build of-the-moment environments that slyly pay homage to the past. Below, some highlights from a day in the busy designer’s life. chzon.com 8 a.m. I don’t usually do breakfast, but when I do, I go to the new Ritz hotel. I love that you can pick and choose from an extensive selection of sweet and savory items. 10 a.m. I enjoy taking a mid-morning walk at the Jardin des Tuileries. It’s a beautiful garden, full of flowers—especially in the spring. There’s a labyrinth and ponds, not to mention gorgeous views of the Louvre.
LX_COM20_TheReport.indd 172
12 p.m. We just finished a project at the Hotel des Grands Boulevards, and I often grab a bite there. Giovanni Passerini is the chef, and the courtyard is a beautiful spot for lunch. The hotel design was inspired by the Hameau de la Reine, the rustic retreat built for Marie Antoinette near the Petit Trianon. 2 p.m. One of my favorite stores in Paris is Le Bon Marché. The atmosphere is elegant, and the goods are highly curated. It always showcases the newest brands and incorporates art installations and cultural exhibitions. 4 p.m. When I feel the need for a little inspiration, I visit the Musée des Arts Décoratifs or Centre Pompidou. I could look at their permanent collections 10,000 times and not get tired of them, and they always present the right traveling exhibitions. I love Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri's installations.
6 p.m. I like to start the evening with pre-dinner cocktails at the Hotel National des Arts et Métiers. Designer Raphael Navot, owner Samy Marciano and restaurateur Julien Cohen are the team behind this hotel. The space has a factory-chic vibe and the drinks are top-notch. 8 p.m. Dinner at Balagan is always fun. Chefs Assaf Granit and Uri Navon are from Jerusalem and their Israeli-inspired dishes have French and Moroccan touches. It’s a great place to unwind after a long day.

For her latest emporium, designer Sarah Lavoine could not have found a more typically Parisian environment. Located in the 16th arrondissement, off a cobblestone courtyard, the industrial-cool warehouse is a historic building that formerly housed one of the area’s oldest locksmiths. Now it showcases the designer’s full breadth of work, with furniture, housewares and lifestyle products arranged in artful vignettes throughout the space. “It’s refreshing to be able to propose an entire environment that truly reflects my personality and range of ideas,” she says. “We want to provide an experience where a stroll through the store offers a surprise around every corner.” sarahlavoine.com

Few modes of travel convey luxury quite like the Venice-Simplon Orient Express. Taking design cues from Paris, Venice and Istanbul, three cities on the storied train’s route, Wimberly Interiors just completed a loving restoration of the 1920s-era cars, creating grand suites that retain many of the carriages’ original bespoke details. The Paris suite is a sumptuous retreat complete with elegant furnishings, crystal barware and Lalique crystal panels. belmond.com

History tells us that desire is a potent motivator, but it’s also a source of inspiration. For her latest furniture collection, designer Donna Mondi looked to the wandering eyes of French kings. Each piece has been given the moniker of a royal mistress—the bench shown here is named for courtier Diane de Poitiers, who captured the attention of King Henry II. While such passion is often fleeting, Mondi’s deft blend of Art Deco and midcentury forms offers more permanent thrills. dmondiinteriordesign.com

CULTURE TRIP
Tokyo was architect Stephanie Goto’s playground as a child. Here she shows us the concept of Japanese hospitality, known as omotenashi, by sharing her favorite spots in the bustling metropolis. stephaniegoto.com 7 a.m. Early mornings are often a jet-lag reality, so a quick swim at the Aman Tokyo’s pool, perched high in the sky, and the umami-rich Japanese breakfast served in your suite is an energizing, must-do ritual. 10 a.m. A cultural outing sets the tone for the day. Explore the beauty of Japan through the craft of everyday items including earthenware, textiles and lacquerware by artisans at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. 12 p.m. For a sushi lunch, I recommend the ground floor at Kyubey’s main shop in Ginza. Order the omakase, the house cold sake and request a taste of every sea urchin type they have. And don’t pass up the thinly sliced daikon radish, salty plum and shiso at the meal’s conclusion—it’s their signature.
LX_COM20_TheReport.indd 174
2 p.m. Take an architecture walk on the outskirts of Ginza to see the Nakagin Capsule Tower, an iconic example of the Metabolist movement by master architect Kisho Kurokawa. On a grander scale, the Tokyo International Forum by Rafael Viñoly still remains breathtaking. 3 p.m. Visit the Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, a truly Japanese art form which recalls the beauty of storytelling, at the Ukiyo-e Ota Memorial Museum of Art.
housewares; D&D Department for global finds that work in the kitchen and home; and Tokyu Hands, a one-stop-shop for home, beauty and lifestyle goods.
4 p.m. Stop at Onibus Coffee, located in the Nakameguro neighborhood, for a cortado and don’t pass up a sweet treat. Japanese pastries rival those of France.
8 p.m. Dinner at the chef’s counter at Sugalabo is the perfect finale for the day. Chef Yosuke Suga is the visionary behind this hidden boutique restaurant that features simple dishes using carefully curated ingredients. Order the curry rice, an off-menu item that’s a Japanese home-cooking classic.

Named in honor of the early 20th-century Japanese folkart movement, Schumacher’s Mingei collection of fabrics and wallcoverings celebrates craftsmanship and the imperfect beauty of handmade textiles. INFLUENCE
Born in Tokyo and raised in the United States, designer Jonah Takagi makes timeless everyday objects elevated by their artfulness. For instance, the Lamella lighting collection, shown here, features tiny pleats that resemble the underside of a mushroom cap. Imbuing simple forms with complexity is something Takagi saw firsthand in his youth. “In Japan, you see a lacquer bowl and the amount of work involved in producing it is astounding,” he says. “From turning the wooden form to applying layers of lacquer with a brush made only of a specific kind of hair, there's so much consideration paid to an object, yet, at the end of the day, it’s just a humble bowl.” ateliertakagi.com
BOOK
Design lovers, take note: No visit to Tokyo is complete without a trip to the sprawling Daikanyama T-Site complex, home to one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Designed by Klein Dytham Architecture, the campus is anchored by a large branch of Tsutaya books, which features an extensive collection of art and design publications. There’s also an upstairs lounge where you can peruse an impressive collection of more than 30,000 vintage periodicals while you sink into a buttery leather sofa and sip a glass of wine or sake—definitely more swish than your local public library. real.tsite.jp

Even when travel restrictions to Cuba were temporarily eased, few lucky souls got to explore behind the closed doors of Havana’s most beautiful abodes. For an all-access pass, one only needs to peruse the books of Cuban-born architect Hermes Mallea of New York’s M Group. His trio of tomes, including Havana Living Today, offers an intriguing glimpse of private spaces bursting with bold and lively decor. Colorful tiles, crystal chandeliers and stained-glass transoms set the stage for eclectic furnishings and high art. “You would think that expressing personality would have been frowned upon by the regime, but individuality has always been important to Cubans,” says Mallea. “The book reflects a spirit of optimism that’s alive today in the vibrant artisan and maker scene. There’s a hope that the younger generation will stay and create wonderful things.” mgrouponline.com

IN THE ROUND For many of the great museums of the world, the architecture is as exhilarating as the works of art on display. Following that model is Cape Town’s Zeitz MOCAA, which features the largest collection of 21st-century contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. London-based Heatherwick Studio converted the 1920s-era former grain silo into a cultural destination by carving open spaces into the concrete tubes that once held corn. The result is a vaulted marvel that inspires the kind of hushed reverence usually reserved for a cathedral. zeitzmocaa.museum

Since its launch in Cape Town, the Southern Guild gallery has challenged perceptions about South African design through their highly curated exhibitions, such as “ExtraOrdinary,” which featured the work of artists such as Xavier Clarisse and Chuma Maweni (shown here). “Craft is very old in Africa, but design is young,” says Trevyn McGowan, CEO and co-founder of the Guild Group. “It’s impossible to reduce the diversity and sophistication coming from all corners of the continent, but most African design is rooted in social and political realities, a strong sense of narrative, a true bond with nature, and a sense of human connectedness.” southernguild.co.za

of Arizona. Today, his focus is on one particular community: The Estates in Flagstaff. With 160 acres broken into 16 estate parcels near Forest Highlands, the area boasts all the natural wonder and close-by cultural opportunities for which Northern Arizona is revered. “I love this region for its scenic beauty and cool, dry climate,” Brooks says. “I think there are few places in the United States as beautiful as Northern Arizona, and it might just have the best summer climate of anywhere. The lifestyle here is laid-back, recreational and fun. My blood pressure goes down by half the moment I arrive.”
As visitors continue to discover Northern Arizona’s diverse landscape, new residents are moving to the area in search of that picture-perfect, highmountain escape. The concept is indicative of Northern Arizona as a whole, where one can sometimes ski in the morning and lie by the pool in the afternoon. Just half an hour from Flagstaff and the Village of Oak Creek, Foxboro is at the heart of the region. Built on property previously owned by the Fox family since the early 1900s, the community continues to be one of the area’s best-kept secrets, offering a secluded and stunning environment just a short drive from popular restaurants and activities.
Merle M. Karber, the president and owner behind the development, calls it, “the luxurious side of nature.” Foxboro’s 57 homesites were created with custom builds in mind, whether for the year-round resident or a part-time vacation home. Surrounded by tall pines, meadowlands and lakefront, the properties speak to Northern Arizona’s near-unparalleled beauty. “The lots are individually designed to take optimum advantage of views, topography and privacy,” Karber says. “This area provides an unmatched quality of life, with the best of every amenity nestled into an unspoiled setting.”

This is what drew custom home builders Kevin Baltzell and Joni Haug to the region, and the concept now informs the work of their firm, aptly named Harmony Builders. “We build high-quality custom homes

in diverse styles, from rustic to contemporary, within a wide range of sizes and budgets,” Baltzell says. “Our name, Harmony Builders, is our constant reminder that our job is to make this process as enjoyable and free of stress as possible.” Harmony Builders purposefully maintains a low volume of projects, so as to focus on each client’s needs, from inception to long after completion. Asked what he most enjoys outside the office, he says, “In addition to the well-known landmarks, I would recommend Flagstaff’s walking tour, its music and theater events, and its biking and hiking trails.”

estled at the base of the Mogollon Rim and between four separate national forests, Payson is one of Northern Arizona’s hidden gems. And The Rim Golf Club may be the town’s most sought-after residential community. With a world-renowned golf course, awe-inspiring views and proximity to art galleries, first-rate restaurants, a casino, rare outdoor excursions and more, it has something to delight everyone. “We have the perfect climate, within an hour of the Phoenix area,” says Butch Joyner, The Rim Golf Club’s designated broker. “There is this amazing hometown feel, with a
wonderful farmer’s market, concerts under the stars, festivals and celebrations for community members to enjoy.” Within the neighborhood itself, a clubhouse, pool and mountain spa round out an impressive roster of amenities. As for the residences, buyers of The Rim’s land parcels can choose to build their own custom home or select one of the predesigned luxury floor plans. “Many of the properties are estate homesites, with the remainder being for cottages and casitas,” Joyner says. “The variety of properties and architectural styles is an expression of The Rim’s attention to detail and customization.”
1. Designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf, The Rim Golf Club’s course offers unparalleled play. 2. Within the sweeping, 29,000-squarefoot clubhouse, a golf pro shop, locker rooms, a casual grill, formal dining areas, cozy lounges and intimate outdoor niches provide every amenity. 3. On many days, the clubhouse dining room’s 50-foot cascading glass wall is opened to allow the cool, pine-scented breezes in, while providing stunning views.
Like Golfing With the Legends The 18-hole, par-71 course at The Rim Golf Club was the final collaboration between the famous design team of Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf. Many players, including Weiskopf himself, say they saved their best for last. “The 12 finest consecutive holes Jay Morrish and I ever designed are here at The Rim Golf Club,” he says. Pine-lined fairways, dramatic boulder outcroppings, sudden elevation changes and omnipresent views pay homage to the grand tradition of the game.

n 2000, Stephanie Larsen was living and working in Orange County, California, where she’d established her firm, Stephanie Larsen Interior Design, some years before. While she loved the area, Larsen was looking to live at a slower, more intentional pace, and when she stumbled upon Sedona, she knew she’d found her new home. “The lifestyle in Northern Arizona is relaxed and casual, and the people are welcoming, energetic and well-educated,” she says. In addition to the community and culture, Larsen has thrived in Northern Arizona’s design scene. “Homeowners don’t need to bring an outside architect, builder or designer
from the big city,” she says. “We have all moved here, and award-winning talent abounds.” In fact, Larsen herself has been lauded for her ability to deliver spaces equaling those found in the most design-centric cities. Her philosophy relies on balancing beauty, function and personalization. “I discover what makes the client feel comfortable in a home and actualize that vision,” she says. “I particularly enjoy seeing it all come to life. At the end, when all the surfaces are in, the furniture is placed, pictures are hung and accessories have been added … that’s satisfying.”
The future. In recent years, a greater number of national building and retail companies have established themselves here, but I don’t think Sedona is ever going to lose its beauty and appeal. It has a natural, built-in development limit, because there is a finite amount of acreage and it’s surrounded by protected wilderness.
“Northern Arizonans are open-minded, engaged and full of life.”

Nancy Weinman On Nature’s Influence + I’m always taken by the desert’s colors. The palette is difficult to duplicate in the home, but when you find a material that mimics the color of the red rocks or sage bushes, it’s a winner—every time. + The lack of insects, plethora of stars and temperate climate, with all four seasons suited to outdoor living, make this one of the best places on earth. As an architect, this means focusing on indoor and outdoor spaces.
3
+ Our design approach revolves around the lifestyle that draws people to Northern Arizona. I have a background in solar design, and I use my appreciation and understanding of the sun’s angles to create homes that support indoor-outdoor living year-round.

pon visiting Sedona for the first time, architect and project management specialist Nancy Weinman recognized a void in the market. “At that point, all the focus here was on high desert-style homes, but we saw an interest in new contemporary residences under 3,000 square feet, so we took a leap of faith,” she says. “We built a speculative home, and it sold quickly. Today, realtors are asking for our product.” Weinman says Northern Arizona homeowners are increasingly interested in quality over quantity. They’re looking to get more within budget, and will sacrifice the grandeur of large homes for the perfection of every finish, angle, want and
need. And just who comprises this clientele? According to Weinman, empty nesters make up a large segment of the population. “Retirees love to gather at each other’s homes, and enjoy food and wine after a vigorous day of hiking,” she says. “The arts are more important here than the news. You’ll hear locals speak of the ability to drop your worries once you are surrounded by the nature here.” Arizona is also a relatively low-tax state, making long-term affordability—a prime concern for anyone, but especially for those in the retirement community—a key selling point.

he story behind Woodesign is one of evolution. Established in 1979 as a designer and builder of custom furniture, millwork and cabinetry, the Phoenix-based company added a specialty to its repertoire in the 1980s: curved grand staircases. From the ‘90s to today, contemporary cabinetry and custom furniture, in matched veneer and with curves, have become its hallmarks. Throughout it all, Woodesign has maintained its reputation within Northern Arizona’s community through a dedication to superior craftsmanship and effective communication. Led by president Bernie Becker
and vice president Larry Langhurst, the company works primarily in neighborhoods like Hassayampa and Forest Highlands, in Prescott, Sedona and Flagstaff. As for their typical customer, it’s varied. “The region has become a destination for several generational groups,” Becker says. “Older folks come here to retire, owing to the elegant lifestyle, great range of weather, sense of community and variety of entertainment options. But younger people are moving here too, because they value the active lifestyle and diverse natural environment.”
A VIEW FORWARD To hear Langhurst tell it, the Northern Arizona lifestyle is all about being active and spending the day outdoors, and as more homeowners of every age arrive, the built landscape changes. “Older buildings are being replaced by new, better investments,” Langhurst says. “These aim to capitalize on the site and its views.”

B
uilding one’s own home is a challenge that tempts just about every designer at some point. For interior designer Caroline Tyler DeCesare, it had been a lifelong dream. So after establishing a successful business of her own and buying a 2.5-acre plot in Gilbert with her husband, Darin, she decided it was time to act. From the outset, DeCesare knew she wanted to incorporate into the residence elements from her childhood home in Mesa, a brick structure with a shake-shingle roof. “I’ve always liked that kind of architecture,” she says. To bring the vision to life, she turned to architect Jim Blochberger, with whom she’d collaborated before. What resulted, he says, is a more current version of her past abode with plenty of room. “It’s a modern farmhouse with ample living spaces for the family,” he says. luxesource.com / 189

That sense of space is one reason DeCesare called upon Blochberger, who worked with general contractor Ron Barney. “What I love about Jim is he gets the volumes right,” she says. “It’s kind of magical.” For instance, entering the great room, with its dramatically pitched ceiling, is a bracing experience. The desert light floods the space through sliding doors at ground level and dormer windows above, intensified by the white planking of the walls and ceiling—an exhilarating effect. DeCesare enhanced the home’s architecture with a palette of black and white—her “love language” she teasingly calls it. In the great room, which includes both living and dining areas, she counterbalanced the bright white walls with dabs of dark color, such as a black

granite fireplace surround and a glossy black antique Chinese console. Because the couple has three children, ranging from ages 5 to 13, carpets “must be forgiving,” DeCesare notes. She defined the room’s seating area with a charcoal-and-white-striped rug placed atop a woven hemp carpet, a durable strategy that adds depth and warmth. For a pop of color, “I lean toward red,” she says, adding that she considers it to be a neutral hue. Even so, it leaps to attention from the leather seats on a pair of spindle armchairs in the room. Throughout the house, “there’s a dialogue between traditional and modern,” DeCesare says. For instance, the interior designer updated the classic dining room table—an orange relic from her childhood—by painting

it black. Nearby, she reincarnated a vintage steel factory window into a wall mirror by replacing its glass panels. And taking up space high on a wall by the table, she sourced a 7-foot antique French clock tower face from an antique store in Philadelphia. DeCesare also harbors a taste for industrial hardware—a trait she credits to her father, who built horse trailers for a living. “Growing up, I was always around metalworkers,” she notes. This comes elegantly to the fore in the kitchen, where the stools are inspired by those found in diners and the pendant lights are nickel. And by having bold stripes— black and white ones, of course—painted across the backsplash, the interior designer made beautifully handhewn tiles seem both time-honored and new.
LX_AZ46_HOM_DeCesare_12.indd 197
By contrast, patterning is subdued in the master bedroom. “I deal with color and pattern all day,” DeCesare says. “I wanted a white, calm retreat.” Adding to the feel, the ceiling soars to 15 feet, and the black-and-white carpet and large pillows add contrast. But for the inevitable dash of color, “I went a little eclectic,” she says, referring to the lumbar pillow made of an antique suzani-embroidered panel with a red circle at its center. It may be tiny, but it pops. The project was a learning experience for DeCesare, who worked through the challenge of being both client and interior designer. “It was really hard to be in my own head about it all the time,” she admits. Yet the final look, which reflects her aesthetic through and through, was worth it. “I love my house,” she says. “It makes me want to stay home.”
“I love books,” DeCesare says. “They have pride of place in the house.” Her bibliophilia is beautifully apparent in the library, where custom RH shelving surrounds a Verellen ottoman atop a Pottery Barn rug.

An early black-and-white work hangs in the Scottsdale area studio of Kaori Takamura (below), who creates distinctive mixed-media pieces inspired by American and Japanese folk art. A more recent piece (opposite) reflects the vibrant use of color that characterizes her current catalogue.
P
ainting a Hershey’s chocolate bar in a class at Paradise Valley Community College didn’t strike Kaori Takamura as a very auspicious beginning to her new life as an artist. Having left her successful career in graphic design in search of creative fulfillment, “I just wanted to paint,” she recalls. “But when I brought the piece home, it didn’t feel right, so I applied machine stitching. It had a magical effect, giving a sweet, melancholy emotion to the painting. The instructor was shocked.” More than a decade later, colorful thread remains a defining element of the artist’s work. Takamura’s recent pieces, 45- to 50-inch panels, feature plywood shapes painted in cheeky color combinations—like lime, scarlet and sunflower— “stitched” together in ways that conjure up Americana quilts, their mischievousness accentuated by the sophistication of their craftsmanship. The works meld the quotidian and sublime into something strikingly beautiful, yet with a childlike sense of wonder.

A former graphic designer, Takamura creates her works digitally, then has the pieces laser-cut. Painted shapes and threads form a work in progress. A print-out of a design for Between Shapes 1018 hangs in her studio (opposite, top). A yellow shape “reminds me of the 1960s patterns from my childhood, she says (opposite, bottom).
LX_AZ46_SM_Takemura_6.indd 204
5/25/18 10:36 AM
Working out of a studio in her modern home near Scottsdale—by midcentury architect Al Beadle—Takamura executes stitching like she would a brushstroke. “When I apply the thread, there’s a nostalgic emotion, and it somehow expresses what I’m feeling,” she says. “When I was a child and had a hole in my pants, rather than buying new ones, my mom would patch it. I really liked that. You have more attachment to your things.” The artist’s use of wood, meanwhile, has evolved over the last three years. Takamura had experimented with laser-cut canvas pieces, but “the surface was too flat,” she recalls. Wood promised a more three-dimensional look. “I’m not afraid to change,” she says, a quality also evidenced by her moves with her husband over the years between Japan and the United States. Fittingly, Takamura’s artistic process incorporates her background as a graphic designer: After creating rough hand sketches for a piece, she
scans the drawings into a computer. “I decide everything—including the layout, color and shape—on the screen first,” she says. The geometric shapes, often inspired by the 1960s patterns of her childhood, are then laser-cut out of ⅛-inch birch plywood and painted with acrylics. “I try to choose colors that have a more vintage feeling—a little bit yellowish,” she says. Takamura’s inspirations are manifold, with a heavy element of folk art—including Mingei from Japan—as well as American Pop art, Scandinavian design and the dynamic textiles of Chicago sculptor Nick Cave. Having appeared in group and solo shows across the country, the artist is represented by Gebert Contemporary; Meyer Gallery in Park City, Utah; and Long View Gallery in Washington, D.C. That early art teacher who was astonished by Takamura’s stitching wouldn’t be surprised by her success. “He suggested I take art more seriously,” she recalls. “So I did.” luxesource.com / 205

Masterminded by general contractor Brad Leavitt, a contemporary house near Phoenix contains a great room that connects to the rear garden. The decor by interior designers Dawn Terry and Megan Papworth was inspired by the mud-cloth panels found on Etsy that flank the fireplace. The gray sofa is by Article, and the jute rug is Safavieh.
W
hen Brian and Maury Harris spotted a spec-house rendering on an empty lot near Phoenix, they had just finished building a home nearby. Nevertheless, the young couple with four children couldn’t stop thinking about the renderings. Masterminded by general contractor Brad Leavitt, with input on the smart blackand-white classical façade from his wife, Ashley, the residence was geared toward indoor-outdoor living, with an enormous great room that opens to the backyard. “This was our first spec home,” Leavitt says. “We purchased the land and were excited to do something different. It’s really our dream home.” As framing began, Brian and Maury decided to buy the house. The wife immediately called interior designers Dawn Terry and Megan Papworth, the mother-daughter team who had designed the Harrises’ previous home. “She said, ‘Before we go any further, can you help us make some changes so we can go our own way?’ ” Terry remembers. The answer was yes. While Maury knew what she wanted—something a bit bolder stylistically than their previous home—the hardworking mother also wanted little involvement. “We’re at a busy phase of life right now,” she explains. “We have music lessons, a swimmer, a soccer player, dancers and tumblers. On top of that, Brian is running his businesses and traveling frequently. Building our first home was stressful for me, so I handed over everything to Dawn and Megan.” With that, the interior designers reconsidered the plan but kept key features like the kitchen cabinetry and decorative ceilings that were part of the original project by interior designers Kacie Lilley and Stacy Scharf of K&Q Interiors.

The great room’s low furnishings, like the cream West Elm sofa, let the eye continue outside. For color and texture, the interior designers added pillows by Kufri, McGee & Co., Amber Interiors, Loom Goods, Susan Connor and Rebecca Atwood. The floor lamp is by All Modern, and the carpet is from Wayfair.

The five-bedroom house, which Leavitt built with architect Ben Palmer, offers some 5,000 square feet of living space but looks even larger with a decorative balcony above the front door that gives the illusion of a second story. Its black-and-white palette also makes it a standout in a neighborhood of terracotta Tuscans. “People stop and take pictures,” Leavitt says. But there’s a lot that passersby don’t even see, like the clever plan that eschews typical hallways for wide passageways that function more like rooms, and spaces that can shift roles as the children grow. Down the road, for example, the piano room off the great room could be enclosed and made into a guest room or a library.
LX_AZ46_HOM_Leavitt_12.indd 212
That sense of longevity was key to the decor, too. “We like to keep the major elements classic, such as wood floors that will still look good 40 years from now,” explains Terry, who, in general, handles a project’s big-picture items like finishes, tile and flooring. Papworth, on the other hand, focuses on the furnishings. “We have separate areas, but we overlap,” she says. “We really don’t butt heads.” The duo also yields to each other’s knowledge, Terry adds. “In this case,” she says, “Megan is Maury’s age, so I deferred to her on finishes that felt youthful.” These include black walls on both sides of the living room fireplace, where the interior designers hung decorative African mud cloth—an element that drove the overall aesthetic.
Texture continues in the kitchen with woven barstools by Ballard Designs. Terry and Papworth paired a Rohl sink with a Newport Brass faucet and Rejuvenation hardware. The Visual Comfort lanterns that hang throughout the space are from Circa Lighting.
5/25/18 2:05 PM
“The dining room is an extension of the backyard, Papworth says. Contributing to the indoor-outdoor feel are the chandelier wrapped with rope from Bobo Intriguing Objects and Wishbone-style chairs that surround the CB2 table. Art from Christie Adelle adds a splash of color. The wood floors, as throughout, are Provenza.

Opposite: “We wanted the piano room to be a more formal space,” says Papworth. Working with designer and project supervisor Amanda Egbert, she furnished the room with a Jaipur Living rug, Cedar & Moss sconces and a West Elm chaise. “The velvet chaise isn’t a practical piece, but in this room it really works,” she says. The art is by Kim Merritt. Below: A corner of the master bedroom doubles as Brian’s office with a desk from American Furniture Warehouse. “It fits in with the aesthetic of the master, which is overall a somewhat masculine space with darker, neutral colors,” Papworth explains. The palm tree photograph was found on Etsy.

Underneath an Anthropologie chandelier, a Jacuzzi tub rests on glazed-porcelain tile in the master bathroom. Newport Brass fittings and Rejuvenation hardware make a statement, along with Park Studio sconces. A Cesca-style chair adds a midcentury touch.
Working with designer Amanda Egbert, who acted as project supervisor, Terry and Papworth created multiple seating areas at one end of the great room, combining a cream sofa with a dark gray sofa in one section and pairing light gray modern armchairs in another. “We call the look and styling of the seating areas ‘boho modern,’ ” Papworth says. The space connects to the kitchen through an adjoining dining room and ties back to it through the continuing black-and-white theme. “We made the great room walls the same color as the kitchen island for uniformity,” Papworth says. “White, black and gray are timeless, so that was our base, but we added blues and pinks for warmth.” Notably, these pops of colors appear in a painting from Christie Adelle in the dining room, an otherwise warm, modern space with earthy elements, such as a rattan hutch and a light fixture wrapped with rope.
LX_AZ46_HOM_Leavitt_12.indd 216
The color story continues in the master suite, a lofty space with 12-foot high ceilings, plenty of windows and a mix of dark and light tones. “It’s just beautiful, and nothing overpowers,” Terry says. The room’s deeper hues relate to the interior of Papworth’s favorite space in the house: the master bathroom. “The dark ceiling beams balance out the black fire surround and the barn door to the bathroom,” she explains. “From the black shower walls to the 8-inch countertop slab and the modern lighting, it’s a very peaceful retreat.” Importantly, the interior designers made sure not to waste any space—a home element that attracted the Harrises in the first place. “The flow makes sense, and we love the open, inviting feel,” Maury says. “It’s the perfect party house.” And a classic one at that, Papworth adds: “We achieved a sophisticated look. Every room looks polished and feels complete.”
5/25/18 2:06 PM
“The wood beams set the mood for the master bedroom,” says Papworth, who wanted to create “a retreat-like feel” while echoing the palette and textural elements found throughout the rest of the home. Rejuvenation pendants hover above Ballard Designs nightstands. The leather sofa is from West Elm; the rug is from Bellacor.

t started as a minor remodel—just the addition of a pool-house bathroom and the redesign of the living room of a Scottsdale residence. But after seeing the unfolding vision of interior designers John G. Martin and David P. Turner, the homeowners “handed me the creative wand,” Martin says. Things took off from there. “My husband threw in the office,” recalls the wife, “and I added a bathroom.” Soon the renovation of the entire 5,000-square-foot getaway was well underway. The clients, a Chicago-based couple looking to unwind, acquired the property just two years after it was built. “The architecture was beautiful, but the house came fully furnished, and it wasn’t to my taste,” the wife says, recalling the mustard yellow faux-finished walls, heavy brown leather and a surfeit of architectural ornamentation. The couple’s design brief was simple: “They wanted clean lines and a more open, contemporary look,” Martin says. The wife, who studied architecture and design in college, raised the bar with her request for vivid color. “I know John tends toward a neutral palette,” she says, “and I definitely challenged him with brightening things up.” Known for his use of black and white, Martin confesses, “I had no idea where the color would come from at that point, but then it hit me—artworks would be the color.” Did the homeowners’ nonexistent art collection phase him? luxesource.com / 219

Not one bit. An artist himself, whose work can often be found in his clients’ interiors, he curated a custom collection of pieces with intense paint-box hues that pop against the home’s foundational color theme of gray, white and black. To prime his canvas, so to speak, Martin painted every room a soft matte white and exchanged the residence’s Tuscan-style fixtures for custom lighting with simple geometry, such as the contemporary metal-and-organza chandelier in the living room. “I knew I’d have to bridge several styles in this home,” he says. The existing flooring—taupe travertine and dark-stained walnut—was already a nice neutral shade to showcase the unexpected accents he had in mind, such as century-old cactus skeletons for the entryway arches. “I bought them from an antique dealer in San Francisco, of all places,” the interior designer says with a laugh. “I guess you could say they’ve returned to their native land.”
LX_AZ46_HOM_TurnerMartin_10.indd 225
Nearby, earth tones prevail in the spacious living room, which Martin layered with a muted flokati rug, swivel armchairs in granite-colored linen and a low-slung sofa in white cotton that lends intimacy to the space’s grand proportions. On both sides of the fireplace, now framed by a simplified archway, paintings appear to float on smokygray mirror glass. “We didn’t see the art until the big reveal,” the wife says, “and when we walked in, it was spectacular.” The room also contains many furnishings of Martin’s own design, including leather stools and a sleek oak-and-steel bar cabinet that replaces a traditional corner bar. “It doesn’t scream ‘bar’ now,” Martin says, adding that it cues up the mix of warm wood and metal in the open kitchen. The kitchen might be the most luxurious room in the house, according to Martin. He kept the space’s original layout but changed every surface and appliance with the help of general contractor John Malone. The wife marvels

at Martin’s strategy. “John’s amazing, because he doesn’t have to rip everything out to make a statement,” she says. For example, the interior designer created strong focal points by choosing glossy black tile for the backsplash and painting sections of existing off-white cabinetry a luscious shade of black. On the cooktop and cabinet above the sink, a rough-hewn teak ladder from Bali finds new life as decorative trim—a typical Martin touch. Bold black-and-white contrast continues in the master suite with one of several abstract canvases Martin commissioned from artist David Dauncey. “I wanted it to evoke a modern Native American blanket motif,” he says, explaining the piece subtly honors the home’s southwest surroundings. He also cleverly sliced an antique Chinese game table in half to create nightstands—“They fit perfectly,” he declares—and made the centerpiece of the master bathroom a theatrical backlit screen made of antique air vents from India. Equally important were the changes to the exterior spaces, such as the striking desert garden envisioned by landscape designer Jared Morris and later enhanced by landscape designer Chad Norris. Outdoor features include a custom fire pit by the interior designers, stonework around the pool and a chic pool-house bathroom—the original request that launched the renovation. Altogether, the adjustments have made the house an idyll of indooroutdoor entertaining. “We’ve been living with the new design for a while now,” the wife says, “and every day I still notice something new.”
