LIVING ROOM DESIGNER MICHELLE DIRKSE CREATES A STUDY IN COLOR CONTRAST BY FASHIONING A ROOM TO ECHO THE VIBRANT DISPOSITION OF HER CLIENTS.
You don’t seem shy about color here. What sparked such a vivid aesthetic? The project was inspired by the clients’ personalities and tastes. They enjoy entertaining, so it was important to create a space that allowed for that. They both have a lively energy about them; plus, the lady of the house loves the color fuchsia. While the clients are drawn to bold hues, I didn’t want to go overboard, so I found balance through neutral finishes and furniture paired with strong rugs, pillows and artwork. The art you chose for this space is really something special. I feel like I lucked out with the art. It’s often hard to find the perfect pieces, and clients don’t always want to make the investment. The artwork I used here is from local artists Noël Fountain and Mya Kerner. Noël’s painting above the buffet brings in a richness of color and texture, while Mya’s cast-iron wall sculpture highlights the fireplace and injects geometry into the space. I had originally borrowed the pieces from both artists, but once they were in place, the clients couldn’t resist making them permanent! Any happy accidents to report? As I mentioned before, the client loves fuchsia, but I couldn’t find the right pre-made pillow in that shade and the room just didn’t feel right without one. Luckily, I had some leftover fuchsia fabric from a pillow I’d designed with local artist Kyle Hepworth, which I was able to reuse here. Bench / Jonathan Adler / jonathanadler.com.
