How to Get Around

Getting around our sprawling city can be
daunting for those who lack the know-how. But don’t reach for the car keys yet! It’s fun and easy to explore San Diego with the help of public transit and a few app-based ride services. San Diego’s iconic red Trolley connects east and south counties to downtown. Kids flip for this unique view of the city. Departures are frequent, so little ones won’t get antsy. Hop on when you’re heading somewhere crowded like Petco Park, Seaport Village or Little Italy. The trolley drops passengers within walking distance of major attractions—places where parking would be a headache for motorists. For rail service to North County, check out the Coaster, which offers eight stops between downtown and Oceanside. The Coaster connects to all Trolley lines at the downtown Santa Fe Depot, and both systems offer multiple connections to city buses. Need to get a little closer to your destination? In addition to popular ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft, San Diego is one of the few cities served by FRED—Free Ride Everywhere Downtown.

This fleet of electric shuttles offers pickups and drop-offs anywhere within the downtown area—no charge. The service is funded by corporate sponsors, so riders might enjoy a product sample or demonstration along the way. Download The Free Ride app to learn more and schedule a pickup. Note that the service is on a space available basis. Dockless bikes and scooters are a great option for people who are socially conscious, want to get some exercise or see the city from a different perspective. Find them on street corners around town and be respectful of where you leave them (make it easy for the next person and keep San Diego’s neighborhoods happy). Download the app from LimeBike (only company that offers electric bikes), Ofo, Mobike or Bird (scooters only) for more information. For peaceful bay breezes and stunning views, board the Coronado Ferry from downtown. This 15-minute sail disembarks at the charming Coronado Ferry Landing, where restaurants, shopping and adventure rentals await. Happy traveling!
