Families

Celebrations, Camps and Father’s Day This month our family is celebrating the graduations

of three of my grandsons: Carter is graduating from high school, Tyler is promoting from middle school, and Grant is promoting from elementary school. Time goes so fast! I want to congratulate them and wish them the best. They are great kids! The June issue of Family Magazine covers celebrations of all kinds. Look through the magazine and visit www .sandiegofamily.com to find tons of fun party ideas. Learn about fairy parties on page 24. Need ideas for gifts? Check out the summer toys on page 26. Summer vacations are about to start. Enjoy fun family outings with brand new amusement park rides here in San Diego and a few miles north in Orange County and LA. Read about the exciting rides on page 28. Our calendar editor, Jenny, has highlighted summer concerts on page 42. It is fun to take a picnic along and eat while listening to music. When you visit spots in our calendar, be sure to let business owners know you saw their event in Family Magazine. Summer is a perfect time for the kids to go to camp. There are still openings in the camps you find in this issue. Also check out our Virtual Camp Fair at www .sandiegofamily.com. It is open 24/7 until June 15. Dad’s Day is June 17. It is a wonderful time to celebrate and have fun with him. Thank you to all the fathers who work hard and support loving families. Happy Father’s Day!

What’s your best party planning tip? Anne Malinoski, writer Everyone (including my kid) has dietary restrictions these days. Stressed about what to serve? Try a baked potato bar. Keep the toppings separate, so guests can adjust to their own needs. Offer sweet potatoes for those on a paleo diet, and everyone will be covered. Tony Andrews, marketing representative Pay attention to details (decorations, food, invitation list) because little things make a big impact. If the party is honoring someone specific, do things that will make that person feel special, even if no one else appreciates it (such as, serve their favorite ice cream, even if it’s rum raisin!).

Cherie Gough, writer I always ask a good friend to take photos at my kids’ birthday parties. That way I get to be in the moment and relive the memories later.

Nicole Maggio, marketing representative Have children mail handwritten thank you cards. Email, Facebook and text messages are great, but a handwritten note is much more personal and appreciated. Plus, sending mail is good practice for kids.
