‘The doctor knew what he was looking at. It was cancer’

During Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, pastor ANDY ROBINSON, who is living with a stage 4 diagnosis, explains why for him, ‘The Big C’ isn’t cancer, but Christ Interview by Emily Bright
‘I
knew something wasn’t right when I came out of the colonoscopy,’ Andy Robinson tells me. ‘They take you to a waiting room and then bring you in for a chat. And I said to my wife, Hazel: “Prepare yourself, this is not going to be good news.”’ His instincts were correct. ‘The doctor came in and said he couldn’t say conclusively until the biopsy results were back, but that he’d been doing his job for 30 years and knew what he was looking at. It was cancer.’ In that moment, Andy felt ‘a peace that defies understanding’ – a time of peace that is referenced in the Bible. As we sit in the comfort of his home in West Sussex, he recalls: ‘Everything in you thinks. “I should be freaking out right now”, but you’re not, and there is a supernatural peace. ‘We often think peace is the absence of things – that if only these problems weren’t here, we could be peaceful.
