– beneficiary of the 2019 additional-value stamp by Pertti Frandsen
This is where we leave the platform to the Salvation Army’s chief editor, who will tell us more about the organisation’s charity work among Greenland’s socially marginalised.

The meetings bore fruit and it was concluded that the Salvation Army would set up operations in Greenland. Already in August that year, the Salvation Army set up a shelter in Nuuk, where their initiatives among the homeless and marginalised quickly developed, tak-

Maria Panínguak’ Kjærulff has had her work exhibited at Greenland’s National Museum & Archive, Nuuk Museum of Art, Queen Ingrid’s Hospital and the Greenlandic Self-Government in Nuuk. Not only has Maria Panínguak’ Kjærulff exhibited locally but also in Canada, Korea, France and the Nordic countries. This is her fourth stamp commission for POST Greenland.

In 2015, Salvation Army majors Kurt and Helle Pedersen assumed responsibility for this task. “Being homeless is tough anyway, but being homeless here is particularly dangerous”, says Kurt Pedersen.
During her career she has worked in theatre, photography, sculpture and film. Her artistic expression is very diverse.

We are once again focusing on a social cause when we issue the annual additional-value stamp on 21st January. Greenland’s 900 homeless live under harsh conditions. The Salvation Army’s ‘warm space’ in Nuuk is, therefore, a popular gathering place for Greenland’s vulnerable. ’Willam’s Café’ is the framework for the Salvation Army’s ‘warm space’. Free breakfast and inexpensive lunches are available and there is often a long queue.

Maria Panínguak’ Kjærulff is a graphic artist who is best known for her large paintings and drawings. She grew up in Nuuk. In 2005 she took a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design University. She also completed an artistic séjour in New York in 2009.

In April 2018, a documentary called ’Northern Lights’ presented a unique view of the conditions experienced by Nuuk’s homeless and vulnerable. This film shows the fruit of the collaboration with the authorities and highlights the Salvation Army’s objective of bringing a real ’Northern Light’ to places that are otherwise in the dark. ing the form of social and church offerings, including their café, soup kitchen and worship, as well as the continued provision of hot meals and human care, and the counselling and dialogue which is an important element of this initiative. After only three years, there was so much enthusiasm about the work that was being done by the Salvation Army that they had grown out of their premises. From August 2015, the initiative was, therefore, expanded to bigger premises at 47 H.J. Rinksvej in Nuuk.
