Musicians on Lockdown

1. Do you come from a musical family?

My dad was a drummer but not professional. He was a spiritual man. So i started in the church. Now Im playing session for a few very contrasting projects.. from rock , to afrikaans, to jazz to experimental. Wouldnt have it any other way.

2. During this lockdown, how do you keep busy?

During the initial lockdown I took on a challenge to create 21 beats in 21 days. These were short videos and collaborations of me playing drums. Continuing this kind of work and teaching is keeping me busy.

3. Can you plan for future gigs, shows, concerts etc during lockdown?

Most of the projects I’m involved in are planning to do live streaming and recordings so we will be working within the law and doing as much as we can.

4. What music did you listen to growing up, who influenced you?

I was a 90s teen so all the big grunge bands of the time. Later.. lots of jazz.

5. Which is your favourite album of all time?

My favorite albums are wide spread.. but I’m going with Brad Mehldau- Day is Done.

6. Did you manage to practice your golf at home during lockdown?

Ive been practicing a bit of chipping thats all.

7. Favourite golf course in South Africa?

My favorite course is Erinvale for sure.

1. Do you come from a musical family?

Sort of, my aunt was one of the founders of the Tygerberg eistedford and my dad plays the piano and my boet the clarinet!

2. During this lockdown, how do you keep busy?

We are launching a album and putting up a launch with a livestream.

3. Can you plan for future gigs, shows, concerts etc during lockdown?

Not really its up in the air but hey we can organize our launch online for the 30th of May, tix at www.howler.co.za/dieheuwels

4. What music did you listen to growing up, who influenced you?

Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Everclear.

5. Which is your favourite album of all time?

Probably Sparkle and Fade of Everclear.

6. Did you manage to practice your golf at home during lockdown?

Chipping, chipping, chipping, did a 8 iron into a duvet a few times but it just didnt feel lekker.... hopefully we are on the course soon!

7. Favourite golf course in South Africa?

Definately George GC, Fanccourt-Montagu close second and Humewood third.

1. Do you come from a musical family?

Mom and dad both very natural musicians. Self taught, all by ear.

2. During this lockdown, how do you keep busy?

Fortunately I’ve been quite busy. It started with a roof top show for charity and that expanded into some great corporate work. I’m one of the lucky few who has been quite busy during this time.

3. Can you plan for future gigs, shows, concerts etc during lockdown?

We have attempted to reschedule a lot of shows but it’s becoming more and more evident that we cannot be exactly sure when we might be able to confirm shows in front of large groups. It’s quite scary actually but looks like this will be the uncertain future we will all have to face for now.

4. What music did you listen to growing up, who influenced you?

Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Guns n Roses and, of course, Rodriguez.

5. Which is your favourite album of all time?

Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction.

6. Did you manage to practice your golf at home during lockdown?

Hmmmmm.....on Xbox? Definitely!

7. Favourite golf course in South Africa?

Only because I recently eagled the 18th on Fancourt Links at Gideon du Plessis’s golf day 2019. True story. PS: it was a complete fluke. Best 5 iron second shot of my whole life, lipped out to 5ft and sank it. BMT baby.

1. Do you come from a musical family?

My father was a high school teacher, but had a great love for painting and making music, so it came from him.

2. During this lockdown, how do you keep busy?

I’ve got a home studio, so I’ve been keeping myself busy with recording and writing music.

3. Can you plan for future gigs, shows, concerts etc during lockdown?

You can plan live streaming shows, but there’s only so much you can do with online shows, its not the same as playing in front of an audience. Planning is difficult at this moment! Lets hope they open up golf courses soon!

4. What music did you listen to growing up, who influenced you?

Hendrix, Zeppelin, Frank Zappa.

5. Which is your favourite album of all time?

Zoot Allures - Frank Zappa.

6. Did you manage to practice your golf at home during lockdown?

Yes! I made myself a practise net by attaching a blanket to my kids trampoline! I tried it a couple of times, but stopped after narrowly escaping death a couple of times!

7. Favourite golf course in South Africa?

Pearl Valley, Kingswood & Bellville.
