All this would not be possible without the efforts of the Committee and sub committees who work hard to conceptualise and plan our wonderful events. And this magazine would not be possible without its contributors and advertisers. A big thank you to everyone who wrote an article or took photos for Porsche Parade this year. In this issue we have the Annual Dinner Dance report and awards list. Another great event this year held at the RACV Club. In our regular column “What’s in your garage” Will Darvall and I visit Treasurer Michael O’Brien and his pristine collection including his Show N Shine award winning 993 Turbo.

For “Make mine rare” I get Will to report on himself and his 550 Spyder he built. A replica of a very rare and beautiful car made famous by James Dean. If I ever get a spare eight years it’s a project I would love to take on! Ever regret selling a car? - the one that got away. Former PP editor Richard Batchelor reports on his 73 RSR he sold in the mid 90’s and is now for sale for one million euros in Europe. It makes property and shares look foolish as a retirement fund! Any rare Porsche with a race history is going to be worth big bucks in the future.

What a year! The Club just keeps going from strength to strength. The amount of events per year keeps growing as members embrace the club. Wether it’s Social runs, Competition, Registers or mid week runs there is definitely something for everyone. The cars bring us together but it’s the friendships and camaraderie that binds us.

club committee 2012/13
president’s message Welcome to the Summer Edition of Australia’s best car club magazine and my first report as President! I’m now able to bath in the after-glow of Will Darvall’s very active 366 days in the chair (not forgetting the leap-day last February). With the huge and effective effort he put in, I can understand why he was very satisfied with the shorter reign. In any case, he still gets to offer his opinion at committee meetings as the Immediate Past President, so we will continue to benefit from his wisdom. At the October AGM Phil Treloar took up the vacancy left by Will’s departure and added to the other 2012 arrivals of Leon Christodulaki and Manny Mezzasalma. Leon has assumed the advertising role in general committee and is a member of the Social and Registers sub-committees. Manny has the role of Driver’s Representative and as such is the focal point for feedback from the competition community. Phil at this early stage is “without portfolio”, which means he gets to handle all the difficult action points. As I write this, the Annual Dinner Dance is still fresh in my mind. I personally thought it was a great success. I loved the 1920’s theme and the fresh venue at the RACV Club’s 17th floor ballroom, with panoramic views of the city. The evening was only possible because of the huge effort put in by Michael O’Brien and his helpers, ably assisted by Carly and Lisa in the office. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the event and have distributed a survey to all participants to get their views. If you have an opinion and can’t now find the survey, just drop us a line. In my new role, I am expanding my focus, which had been mostly on Competition, to include Registers and Social and in doing so, I look forward to getting to know many more of you in a variety of settings. As a very conveniently timed crash course on how everything fits together, in relatively quick succession, I participated in the Registers and the Social committees’ annual Planning meetings and the Competition Rules Review meeting. What struck me was the depth of expertise, resource and commitment we as a club have at our disposal. The development of the annual calendar is a marvel to behold as it requires the three separate streams to cooperate so that the myriad events we hold during the year clash as little as possible. The Competition calendar develops slowly over many months of negotiations, as slots at the most sought after tracks are scarce as hen’s teeth. The draft calendar is then added to by the Social sub-committee about a week later, then by the Registers a week after that. Emerging from that effort is the draft 2013 calendar, which continues to solidify over the subsequent weeks, and even months, as the various events get locked in. Probably the most lively meeting I attended was the Competition Rules Review, at which Andrew Bonwick acted as riot controller. Maybe the competition folk have an inability to turn down the adrenalin! It was very lively and quite a few rule amendments were discussed and several agreed. Anybody interested will find the 2013 competition rules, plus a summary of the changes, on the club web site. We have also included in the calendar for 2013 a very special event. Porsche Cars Australia has announced Porsche Rennsport, a major, and so far for Australia, a unique event to be held at Eastern Creek on May 25 and 26 in 2013. It is anticipated to be the largest ever gathering of Porsches at one venue in Australia. It follows on from huge and successful previous Porsche Rennsport events in North America and Europe. It will involve an array of activities including, for Porsche Club cars, a Regularity, Sprints and Show’n’Shine. At the same gathering will be Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship rounds and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia and a host of displays and other events. If this has piqued your interest, pencil out that weekend and keep your eyes peeled for more announcements.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year or if you’re reading this mid way through the year Happy Easter and welcome to my first Social Corner report as the new Social Committee Director. Before commenting on the year that has been and the one in front of us I’d like to thank my predecessor Michael O’Brien and acknowledge the magnificent work that he has performed over the past 4 years. Michael’s hard work and efficient management resulted in a very active and creative Social Committee over this period and left me a little bewildered by the excellence I need to step up to. The year that was: 2012 was once again extremely active with events taking us literally north, south, east & west of Melbourne either in the form of runs to the Peninsula, lunch on a lake or Adrian Nelson’s very creative and highly successful inside out and upside down run that had us back in Melbourne in time for afternoon tea. The Go Kart Challenge saw Alvaro Del Gallo providing his excellent organising skills to this booked out event. Show ‘n’ Shine returned with a huge response, PCV were offered prime position at MotorClassica and a waiting list was required for entrants. The Mid Year Dinner was trialled at Bobby McGee’s and proved an overwhelming success. The AGM wasn’t themed this year due to some late cancellations and as such we didn’t anticipate the number of people who attended. Our final run for the year will be complete as this magazine goes to print and is being organised by Michael O’Brien who is using Adrian’s inside out formula to take us to the Cuckoo Restaurant. Annual Dinner Dance: Some of you reading this article would have recently attended our Roaring Twenties themed Annual Dinner. The outfits worn by attendees were tremendous. Interestingly a lot of the dresses on the evening were originals from around that era and kept in the family. Whilst the evening was a success a survey was submitted to attendees for feedback with some very enthusiastic praise and suggestions amongst the responses. I’m pleased to advise that some of your feedback has already been taken on board and has formed part of our initial planning for the event in 2013. Sincere thanks to Michael O’Brien, Carly and Lisa for the huge effort they put in to create this fantastic evening for the whole club. The forthcoming year: Speaking of 2013, the Social Committee has already held the 2013 planning meeting with and pencilled in a bursting array of events with some potential surprises (think of the release year for the 911). In addition
to the Murray Valley Grand Tour that currently has a waiting list there will, of course, be the everpopular seasonal social club runs & club nights. Also planned for return in 2013 will be the Go kart Challenge, Show ‘n’ Shine, PCV family day and the very successful Mid Year Dinner that is a topic of hot discussion on how to maximise the return of this event. A theme for the AGM has been tentatively decided which promises to be very engaging. Keep an eye out for regular changes to the calendar on the PCV website and for Carly’s updates throughout the year as there will be some brand new events to further encourage social activities within PCV. Summer Club Night BBQ: Our opening club night in February is planned to be at the Royal Yacht Club for a gourmet BBQ evening. There will be a change to normal proceedings to be able to bring you this gourmet event and we encourage the use of PCVs new club kiosk to register your expression to attend. Registering for the night will assist with catering as we work to ensure PCV funds are managed responsibly for all events. Participant of the Year Award: The award this year was very hotly contested with third prize being decided by the name being pulled out of a hat. This is a good reminder that deciding to have that extra sleep in may result in you missing out on some fantastic prizes. First Prize - Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre Award: Yokohama tyres of the winner’s choice to the value of $2,000 was won by Garry Saber Second Prize – Porsche Cars Australia Award: Items of the winner’s choice from the PCA Selection Department to the value of $400 was won by Barb Darvall Third Prize – Nillumbik Cellars Award: Wine of the winner’s choice from Nillumbik Cellars to the value of $200 was won by Alvaro Del Gallo with a consolation prize being won by Frank Deak. Thanks again to our sponsors and please keep them in mind when shopping for such products. Social Committee: The Social Committee is currently made up of Adrian Nelson, Alvaro Del Gallo, Maria Del Gallo, Carly Pasco, Janet Conheady, Julia Anderson, Leon Christodulaki, Neil Drew, Trevor Leavesley, Wayne St Baker, Peter Harrison and I’m pleased to announce the return of Michael O’Brien and Will Darvall. With thanks also to the contributions of Alf Carrigan, Michael Bailey & Don Ballingall. This team is very passionate about providing PCV with premier events and work very hard to ensure you have a good selection of quality events to attend and make the most of your Porsche and interaction with fellow enthusiasts. I am very lucky and excited to have such a team for 2013.
If you have any suggestions for events & club nights or feedback please feel free to call me on 0421-617-777 or email social@pcv.com.au as I’d love to hear your thoughts. With thanks: Acknowledgement and thanks to Pamela and all at Porsche Cars Australia, to Thomas and his staff at Porsche Centre Melbourne and to Steve and his staff at Porsche Centre Brighton for their support and assistance with events and club nights. Once more to our other sponsors in Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre and Nillumbik Cellars. Considering how active PCV is as a club I’d like to make a special note of thanks to Carly and Lisa for their efficient and thorough work throughout the year. To you and your families have a very Merry Christmas, a safe New Year thank you for supporting our events and I look forward to seeing you in 2013 or annoying you by chasing you around to take lots of photos. Regards, Felix Rieniets, Social Director

AGM & Club Night Porsche Centre Melbourne 16/10/12
As is usual this Club Night included the Club’s Annual General Meeting which was attended by an impressive number of members. President Will Darvall delivered his report and spoke of the committee and activities which has taken place throughout the past year finishing off with thanking the ever competent Carly and Lisa and Will’s best secret weapon Barb. The always important Treasurer’s report came next presented by Club Treasurer, Michael O’Brien. Like most women I would hate to spoil a good story with figures so I will only say the Club made a small loss attributed to lower attendances at some competition events and a minimal loss on the sale of the Club’s van. Election of Office Holders followed and resulted with; President, Peter Harrison, Vice President, Andrew Bonwick, Secretary, Neville Sampson and Treasurer, Michael O’Brien. Due to the resignation of two Committee members during the year Manny Mezzasalma and Leon Christodulaki had been appointed to the committee. Phil Treloar was a new nomination and elected to the committee at the AGM. We welcome them all to the Committee. Something different for the Club is the introduction of the new PCV apparel line. Some very funky T’s and polos for both the men and the elegant ladies of the club. Mod but understated with clever designs by competition winner Ross Del Gallo and Ron Widdison – available now, a great Christmas gift perhaps!! At the conclusion of the AGM we enjoyed a roast buffet – due to the excellent number of members present we nearly had to call upon a miracle to s-t-r-e-t-c-h the amount of food. On the positive side there was no waste!! After dinner we had a fascinating presentation by Jake Dingle, the CEO of Carbon Revolution (carbonrev.com), about the Company’s recently released Carbon Fibre wheels, the world’s first. They have been researched over many years, in conjunction with Deakin University, and will be produced at a Melbourne factory. Apart from looking quite striking, with the carbon fibre “stripes” showing on the 9 spoke design, the wheels have superior strength, shock resistance and damage resistance to OEM wheels, as well as being about 40% lighter. Jake was accompanied by Ash and Michael, design 10

and technical experts, as well as James, who controls the finances. After the presentation there were many interesting technical queries from the engrossed members, all planning how much they could improve handling and reduce their track times. Jake then offered PCV members a $2000 discount on a set of wheels, valid until the end of November, which again set many brains planning and calculating. It appears that these wheels will be a must have option for the serious competitor or poseur!
from race control The end of an interesting 2012 season. Broadford was very well received last year, with drivers enjoying a new and very technical track. Last year it was run as a couple of different autokhana courses. This year we ran the meeting as a sprint, with 8 cars on its tight and twisty circuit for three hot laps per session. The circuit was made very interesting by a combination of several classes capable of being decided at this last meeting of the year, new CAMS restrictions on where drivers could pass, and rain. Nevertheless we saw some very spirited competition and excellent driving in Open and D Classes. President’s Day is our passenger-only day at Sandown. We have for more than 10 years given up one of our bookings at this premier facility to run an untimed passenger day for controlled, exhilarating runs around the track in the ultimate sports car marque. Catering is always a challenge, with one of the vendors showing the results of a very big event the night before and a very Manyana approach to speedy service. The day was blessed with great weather and very enthusiastic group of drivers - it was the first year for some time that we have run right to the end of the day. The Competition Rules review was held at Porsche Centre Melbourne in mid November – thank you for your continued support for our activities. While that sounds like an esoteric and boring topic for a meeting, it was again well attended by a broad spectrum of our competitors
to debate changes to our rules. The conversation was focussed on what could we / should we change to improve safety, reduce cost, make the events more competitive or just generally improve our club motorsport events. A spirited debate about mandating HANS devices for cars with harnesses resolved to just recommend not mandate their adoption. We have looked at control tyres several times in the last few years. On the surface the idea is appealing. The implementation issues are formidable, for a set of cars with such widely differing wheel specifications, and the benefits do not outweigh considerable administrative issues. If we were F1 or V8 with one or two wheel sizes and dedicated suppliers of rubber, maybe it would be sensible. The rule changes have included removing restrictions on wheel widths, and allowing more extensive camber adjustment. This will improve tyre choices for the older cars and reduce tyre wear for all competitors. The Regularity has been included as a competition event to encourage participation in a different and interesting aspect of club motorsport. Participants will earn a third droppable event, giving a run at the event potentially valuable optionality at the end of the season. Changes have been made to reduce the possibility of class stacking – at either the top or bottom of the class – and these will be trialled in 2013. The calendar for next year is a little different, as both Phillip Island and Sandown are having their tracks resurfaced over Christmas, fully and partially, respectively. With time to allow surface cure, and pre-
existing commitments by both facilities to race and commercial operators, bookings in the first part of the year are very tight. We will start the year at Calder (dry, I hope), then the Sandown Regularity. Late in April we will try a new format at Calder, training in the morning, an open practice from noon to about 3.30 then an evening sprint event, sort of two-and-a-half events on the one day. We have no bookings at PI in the first half, and Sandown is only the Regularity, though I hope that will free up a little between now and the start of the season. We will also leave room in the calendar around the Porsche Rennsport event, so as to allow our regular competitors to participate in the event at Eastern Creek in Sydney. We continue to have good enrolment in Entrée events. Members bring a wide variety of cars, and the aim is to enjoy a day at a racetrack environment within the safety confines of the way we run events. Some members come for one or two meetings, some regularly turn up to particular tracks, and some have moved from Entrée to the competition classes. New entrants are always welcome, although numbers are limited to enable us to match the coaches with the entrée driver effectively and keep a track session devoted to entrée drivers. Give it a go! Enjoy your events. Andrew Bonwick, Competition Director

of Porsche Parade to understand the history that I have not been a part of. What a history it is! Look at the track records from 10 years ago - how we have all developed, improved tyre technology accounts for some, but it is the club competition, the competitive spirit that accounts for the ever improving lap times set at every track.
Two weeks after purchasing the 964 Klara and I went overseas, we went to Zufenhousen, we were the number 1 and 2 ticket holder for the new Porsche Museum on 11th may 2009, a wonderful 6 hours.
Cameron Goodyear illustrates what President’s Day means to him after (he and) his car was rebuilt due to a high speed accident at one at The island - perhaps the most insightful article about Porsche Club Victoria.
We have immersed ourselves in Porsche history and now the Club community. Recently I have acquired over ten years
I hope we continue to celebrate the collegiate aspect of PCV beautifully highlighted by Cameron.
Thanks to all the drivers that participated in the competition, we should all look forward to next year. Marcus Lethlean.

Porsche news
Carrera C4S Coupe the star of the Porsche stand Porsche presents the new Carrera 4 at the AIMS Porsche Cars Australia is presenting the all-new Carrera 4S Coupe at the Australian International Motor Show (AIMS), more than three months ahead of its official on-sale date. Porsche’s star car – a wide body 4S Coupe in Agate Grey with stunning full-leather Carrera red interior – was rushed down the line at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen production centre and flown immediately half way around the world for top billing on the Porsche stand. The new Porsche 911 Carrera 4 blends the excellent performance and efficiency of the new generation of the 911 Carrera with the dynamic benefits of the latest version of the active all-wheel drive system PTM (Porsche Traction Management). The typical Porsche all-wheel drive with rear-focused layout in this latest 911 version guarantees maximum vehicle dynamics on a wide variety of road surfaces and in all weather conditions. The new all-wheel drive 911 is available in four variants – as the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4S in both Coupé and Cabriolet body styles. They sport the same traits as the rearwheel drive versions: their lightweight body design, suspension, engines and gearboxes are identical; the only exception being modifications related to the all-wheel drive. Despite a higher level of engine and driving performance, all four models consume significantly less fuel than the models they replace – up to 16 per cent, in fact. Additionally, the new 911 Carrera 4 is up to 65 kg lighter. The most distinct identifying feature of the 911 with all-wheel drive is still the wide rear body: compared to the two-wheel drive 911 Carrera models, the extended rear wheel arches combine to produce a body that is 44 mm wider at the rear, and the rear tyres are also 10 mm wider. The traditional red light band that connects the two tail lights has also taken on a new look. The C4 models have a 7-speed manual gearbox as standard with the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox available as an option. The 911 Carrera 4 Coupé with 257 kW sprints from zero to 100 km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds (Cabriolet: 4.7 secs) and has a top speed of up to 285 km/h (Cabriolet: 282 km/h). Fuel consumption with PDK is 8.6 L/100 kms (CO2 203 g/ km) for the Coupé and 8.7 L/100 kms (CO2 205 g/km) for the Cabriolet. The Coupé and Cabriolet of the 911 Carrera 4S each have a 3.8-litre rearmounted boxer engine producing 294 kW; enabling acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.1 secs (Cabriolet: 4.3 secs) and a top speed of 299 km/h (Cabriolet: 296 km/h). Fuel
consumption with PDK is 9.1 L/100 kms (CO2 215 g/km) for the Coupé and 9.2 L/100 kms (CO2 217 g/km) for the Cabriolet. New: all-wheel drive indicator, Porsche Active Safe, sliding glass sunroof, extended Sport Chrono pack In the new 911 Carrera 4, a new menu in the instrument cluster informs the driver how the PTM all-wheel drive is currently distributing engine power. Additionally, with the debut of the 911 Carrera all-wheel drive models Porsche is introducing optional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) to the range, which controls distance to traffic ahead and vehicle speed. When ordered with PDK, the ACC system adds the safety function Porsche Active Safe (PAS), which helps to prevent front-end collisions. In addition, Porsche offers a new sliding glass sunroof as an option for the 911 Carrera Coupé. Driving 911 cars with a manual gearbox and Sport Chrono pack can now be even sportier: In Sport Plus mode, the system automatically double-declutches (blips the engine) during downshifts. The new all-wheel drive models replace a very successful previous
generation, of which a total of about 24,000 units were sold since 2008. This represents a 34 per cent share of total sales of second generation 997 models. This previous generation launched with one of the greatest development steps in powertrain technology that the 911 with all-wheel drive ever made: new were the engines with direct petrol injection, Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox and electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (PTM). In July 2011, Porsche crowned the all-wheel drive model series with the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, whose 3.8-litre engine was boosted to 300 kW. Pricing 911 Carrera 4 Coupe
$255,400
911 Carrera 4S Coupe $289,400 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet $280,900 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet $315,000 All pricing is for 7-speed manual gearbox. PDK is a $5,950 option. Prices do not include statutory or dealer charges.

and Barb should listen, although she often doesn’t. That leaves one other person.
I am delighted to hand over to Peter Harrison, and I can confidently say that he is a great bloke, because he agreed to say the same thing about me.
The Club has had a great year; a club is made by the involvement of its members, so keep it up!
The theme for this year’s Annual Dinner was based upon the Gatsby Era of the Roaring 20’s, a glamorous Jazz Age producing one of the biggest fashion trends of the last century. Clearly popular with both ladies and gents alike, everyone seemed to dress beautifully for the occasion.
Peter Harrison then welcomed our special guests Thomas and Claudia Heberling from Porsche Centre Melbourne, Richard Catchlove and Robyn Fetherston from Porsche Centre Brighton, and Grant Powell and Jacqueline Hendry from Traction Tyre and Suspension.
Following the seating of everyone in the ballroom the formalities began with Will Darvall and Peter Harrison completing a Presidential handover, and address. Will’s wit, now legendary included the following: “Good evening everyone. Full dance floor
In public speaking, they say that 38% notice what you’re wearing (I’m wearing the old man’s tails from 1937), 30% notice how you speak, 24% notice how you move and 8% listen to what you say. That means 16 people in this room will listen; the 12 Committee members, Carly and Lisa, because they’re duty bound,

I have enjoyed working with the Porsche family; PCA, PCM, PCB, the 356 and 901 Registers and the interstate Clubs.
Peter then presented the outgoing committee members with their very popular caricatures. They are a great memento of their club involvement, and a deserved reward for excellent service.
The Committee has been positive, productive, happy and constructive.
Following the service of entrée it was then time for our club presentations, but this year the committee decided to only make one award, Club Person of the Year.

SUMMER 2012

The awards of Life Member and Hall of Fame were not to be awarded, and Grant Stephenson helped in a rouse for the award of Club Person of the Year, unknowing that he was to be the recipient. Andrew Bonwick then explained the reasons for this year’s award; “Grant has been a member of the Club since late 2003. Since then he has attended 98 different club competition events. That’s an average of 10 per year. He doesn’t attend as many Social events but within the period of us collecting attendance data he has been to several runs, go-karts, the mid-year dinner as well as being a regular at Club Nights and the Annual Dinner. He routinely provides help and assistance to running club events, was for many years on the General Committee and remains on the Competition Committee. He has maintained the track records on the club web site for many years. In addition to ad hoc assistance at Competition Days on registration, scrutiny etc., he organised the Tassie Hot Tour in 2012. This was to be a combined track and Social tour that
had a lukewarm reception due to the recent big increase in costs for the Sea transport leg. Grant is a clubman, in many senses of the word. He has an accurate and acerbic wit, and if there is a Driver’s Briefing where he hasn’t had a jocular contribution then that would be because I missed it. Irrespective of how the car (or its driver) is performing he is always great fun to be around. Grant has been the foundation member and organiser of one of PCV’s most successful regularity teams in multi club competitions, and has become a core part of the organising committee for the PCV 2013 Sandown Regularity. Amongst the Volunteer Officials he is one of the most respected drivers. Congratulations Grant.” Cheek to Cheek were welcomed back and soon we had our first excursion to the dance floor. Participant of the Year Awards We changed the “Social Competition” last year to be an all-encompassing award, and one that recognised participation in all types of
events throughout the year. Our sponsorship of the first prize was also increased from $1,500 to $2,000, complements of Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre at Rowville. The winner of this year’s competition is indeed a person who has participated in the full range of activities offered by the club. Competition, Social & Register events, and was won by Garry Saber. Second Prize – Porsche Design Merchandise from Porsche Cars Australia to the value of $400 was won by Barbara Darvall. Third Prize - Wine from Nillumbik Cellars to the value of $200 required a Lucky draw between Alvaro Del Gallo & Frank Deak. Frank drew Alvaro’s name from the hat, and collected one of the art-deco ceramic tea pots as a consolation prize. This year we sought feedback from those attending the evening with the following results from 59 responses (at the time of writing).

One thing that has become apparent from reading through the written responses is that there appears to be a misconception as to the purpose of the night. One of our failings is in our promotion of the evening; for many years the evening has been promoted as the “Annual Dinner Dance”, when in reality the evening tries to serve two purposes, a dinner dance and our presentation night. It may be that in combining these two objectives we compromise both. However, it has been the position of many committees that separating these would diminish the prestige of the presentation night. What we have lost however, is the importance and respect of the major competition presentations. This is not acceptable, and we will work hard to improve how these will be handled better, acknowledging the tremendous achievement of Class Wins, and more importantly Outright and Club Champion. One objective that was achieved this year was a savings of $6,000 over last year’s subsidy. This was important as the club has not been making the large profits of the past few years, but did mean the choice of a less expensive venue, and the inability of obtaining a celebrity master of ceremonies. This budgetary constraint does not excuse the dissatisfaction with the variability in the quality of the food, or the menu choice. The feedback indicates that the main meal was a disaster, and while I am extremely disappointed with the quality of service in this regard, I take full responsibility for the poor choice of menu. It is time for a new band. This will be researched over the next six months, and the Social Committee will welcome all suggestions leading to a suitable replacement.
How did we go... Value for money
“The time has come to rebrand and market the event to appeal to the Club’s growing younger generation or you risk ever-decreasing attendances. While this may involve rethinking the band, celebrity presenters, prizes, venue and a clever 12 month marketing campaign for the night, it is time to refresh the formula.”

We will select a different venue. Booking city venues for this time of year must be done up to fourteen months in advance, and we currently have tentative bookings in place for the 30th November 2013, one in particular a 5 Star establishment on Southbank. We will do our best to provide a new formula based upon the above criteria. Expect a return to the elegance of the Windsor, respectful Club Presentations, time for socialising and dining, and then time to party, with a new Master of Ceremonies.

what’s in your garage?
From mild mannered accountant to PCV’s “Eddie everywhere” in 8 years, Michael O’Brien has grown an impressive CV and enviable eclectic vehicle collection. DNA testing reveals that Michael has the mobility or “hot wheels” gene, first expressed in primary school, by the building of billy carts with ball bearing wheels (gee, how those wheels would spin, but not corner!). Push bikes were next, with long rides from East Bentleigh, even a 5 day camping trip with a mate. First car was a mighty Morris 1100 (they’re all dead now), which Michael took on long drives. Then there was the Mazda period; a 1300, an RX-7, a 626 and a 929. Next came the company cars, while working at BHP; a VL Commodore, a Magna Executive, Falcon GL wagon and Fairmont Ghia. Thinking outside the square led to an MG RV8, before the Porsche Disease struck. Michael joined PCV in 2004, the year he bought his immaculate ’95 993 Turbo. He joined the Social Committee in 2005, was deputy Social Director from 2006-8 and Social Director from 2009-12, as well as being Treasurer
from 2011 to the present! The extra work load didn’t bother him, as handling the accounts remained within his comfort zone, whereas the Social role had been a steep learning curve. After running the Turbo in Entrée a few times, he realized that something less expensive and powerful would be prudent for competition. After meeting Chris Tzanis of Weissach Sport and having a few (or thousands of) words with him, Michael bought and developed Keith Ryding’s ’81 SC for the track. He enjoys being part of Chris’ group of competitors and has rapidly improved over the last few years, to now run in the top third of the very competitive and enjoyable C Class. He has also run at Bathurst twice, with more to come and is “desperate to break 3 minutes”. His favourite track is Sandown, where he won the PCV Regularity in 2010, in one of his first competition outings!

Not content with becoming a competitor, Michael has trained to be a CAMS certified Bronze level Scrutineer and has played a large role in running Scrutiny at meetings this year, in conjunction with a dedicated band of helpers, who have mostly also upgraded to Bronze level. The Turbo is now reserved for some Club runs, or the Show‘n’Shine, in which he won his Class last year and the Overall award this year. Last year he again thought outside the square and bought a 2000 Merc CL 500, (for about a sixth of the new price) to use for boulevard cruising, carrying multiple crates of Club wine, driving to the snow, and holding large parties and barbeques in the boot.
More bikes than cars!
This incredible shrinking man (ask him!) is back enjoying the sporting pursuits of youth, such as squash, and is back on the bike, now carbon fibre. Michael has been one of the most enthusiastic, proactive and productive members of PCV since he joined. If there’s a PCV event, he’s most likely to be there, with his infectious enthusiasm, and to have had a large part in producing it!

Is there any correlation to the now frowned upon labour party branch stacking and our humble state PCV competition?

Or the fact that but a few lucky drivers have had more than one outing on the fabulous Broadford racing circuit. Conspiracy? Conincidence? Controversy? All the above and that is what makes club championships such a singularly passionate pursuit. In this game it is simply the driver against the clock. Our weapons are classed according to power, weight and age. Seems so fair.
inadequate inbuilt ethics of the club rules when deciding points towards the championship. We should but once decide our class, a foray into another class with the sole purpose to branch stack out the potential success of another competitor is base and uncouth, a discussion worthy of an additional chapter in Plato’s Meno – the search for virtue.
What a year it has been!
Broadford decided many things, how to drive fast downhill in the wet, how to test your bravery, how to find a line that did not spin you like a top and how to illustrate the All that aside. How fricken cool is Broadford?! May we race there every year in the dry. Let us celebrate the Victors of their Class – those that run consistently in the class they entered at the start of the year. Congratulations to all competitors who have made a great year of the 2012 PCV championship year and special mention to Peter Fitzgerald of Open Class. He has consistently displayed a class of driving in Open that keeps us all entertained. His displays consistently show all club members that skill in this sport once attained, can be demonstrated reliably for as long as you choose to pursue the passion for motor sport. SHOW ‘N’“ASHINE CLASS ACT” Sunday 26th-28th October 2012
SUMMER 2012
31
A CLASS ACT This year’s MotorClassica ‘Picnic with the Classics’ held at Melbourne’s old Exhibition Buildings, again attracted a vast array of marques including of course Stuttgart’s finest on Sunday 28th October. The PCV entrants’ numbers this year were noticeably up on last years with a total of 42. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances our hopeful target of 50 cars was not quite achieved. The quality of the cars on display was at another level with many, if not all owners spending time, dedication and effort preparing their cars. One 996 owner allegedly spent 6 weeks in a crazy cleaning frenzy! Even though the dust was settling on the cars the sheer presence of the vehicles created a wonderful scene as onlookers strolled through and admired the spectacle of the beautiful motoring classics. Attendees came from far and wide including a lovely silver 930 Turbo slant nose from Southern NSW and an eager group of tour cars from South Australia comprising of a Cayman R, a 911SC, a 997S and a 994S Cabrio. It is
always great to have Interstate Porsche owners come along and join us for these events.
Congratulations to the following winners from each Class:
This year’s judging was eagerly taken care of by willing members including Adrian Nelson’s assistance which is always welcomed. The Judging criteria was changed from last year, therefore if you had won a trophy with the same car in the last two years you were automatically elevated into Master Class to compete with the big players. Last year’s Master Class worthy winner Russell Sturzaker stepped aside this year making way for Michael O’Brien to win Master Class with his immaculate 993 Turbo.

The Club’s large presence this year was due in part to our assistance to the MotorClassica event by way of providing volunteers. Most members gave up to two hours or more each day so the successful running of the event could be maintained. It is a credit to Porsche Club Victoria and our Members for showcasing our passion and dedication to the Porsche brand. Visitors would have viewed this as a ‘real club of enthusiasts. ‘ It is with much appreciation that we thank the following for their generous contributions. Porsche Centre Melbourne who kindly provided a 991 for display purposes. Porsche Cars Australia for providing all trophies from Porsche Germany. Meguiar’s Motor Active/Liqui Moly for the Welcome Packs for each Entrant. Most importantly – ‘Our Everywhere Man’ – Felix was literally here and there with his official duties as MotorClassica’s Photographer AND still finding time to produce Judging and other sheets for PCV’s attendees. Personally I would also like to thank the joint endeavours of Felix Rieniets and Michael Bailey for the relentless effort they put into this event including the support team that played a role in assisting this event.

Welcome to “Make Mine Rare”. In this instalment we feature Will Darvall’s beautiful 550 Spyder replica he built himsef! As a car mad youngster growing up in the 40’s and 50’s, I was overwhelmed with delight and desire when the Jag XK120 was unveiled in 1948, the Austin Healey 100 in 1952 and the Spyder 550 in 1953. They are 3 of the most beautiful production cars of all time, made even more striking then compared to the brickshaped cars of previous decades. The Spyders, powered by the quad cam 1500 and later 1600 engines, became famous giant killers in sports car racing, with class wins at Le Mans in ’54, ’55, ’56 and 4- 6 overall in ’55, as well as winning many other races against bigger, more powerful cars. Fast forward to the 80’s, and while the available Jags and Healeys still appealed, the magic of the 550 triumphed over reason. Rather than spend $1 million for a real one, I looked around for something a little cheaper. Chuck Beck started producing a beautiful replica in California and I explored the purchase of one, which was unfortunately only made in LHD. In the early 90’s Graham McRae, who had worked with Beck, started producing RHD replicas in NZ. Graham is a famous engineer, constructor and driver, of Can Am, Tasman and open wheeler fame, up with the the other NZ greats, McLaren, Hulme and Amon.
agreed to set up the chassis for a midmounted engine, 915 gearbox, 914 trailing arms, late VW beetle torsion bar front suspension and Barina steering. The bare shell arrived in Melbourne in early ’94 and this handyman set about building a new car, using only the dream as a plan. The Australian Design Rules govern every facet of design and building and are constantly changing. I subscribed to the 2 thick tomes and studied them thoroughly , to check on rules for lights, instruments and warning lights, interior padding, wipers, seat belts (about 30 pages alone), steering, brakes, seats and engine. I obtained a ’75 US K-Jetronic 2.7 motor, which had the same emissions limits as our ’96 rules. The body had already passed torsion, crash and side door intrusion tests. Several Oz clients pooled resources to crash test the fibreglass seats, which involved a 7 Kg ball of 165 mm diameter swinging on the end of a rope, hitting the seat at 25 K’s, imparting a force of 80 G’s! The car was an orphan, with most others using a VW/ 914 engine, transmission and rear suspension, there were no instructions, and it was 2 steps forward and 1 step back all the way. I’m no motor mechanic, but I can plan, work things out and make lots of stuff, so all the clever engineering work was done by Reg Mort
I visited Graeme’s workshop in Auckland, to check his body-chassis unit of powder coated welded ladder frame chassis, made from chrome moly tubing, riveted to a high quality solid fibreglass body. I wanted the car to have 911 running gear, as far as possible, with independent rear suspension, so Graeme

initially and later, Michael Garner of Autoart, who was most helpful. The engine was a tight fit between the chassis rails, necessitating removal of a couple of turns off the cam cover studs. A neat double exhaust system with cats wasfabricated and fitted. A contoured Kevlar bulkhead was fashioned to accommodate the engine and front facing fan and separate them from the seats. A gearbox cable change was purchased from the US, as the gear change was now at the rear, and we couldn’t fashion a rod change. The final drive was reversed, so that the car didn’t have 5 reverse and 1 forward gears! Lights, instruments, seat belts, seat frames and seats (a fascinating 3D exercise), fuel tank, pedal box and pedals, linkages, suspension, drive shafts and 911 brakes with M calipers were all sourced, fashioned and fitted. 15x6 and 7 wheels of the correct offset were made on 912 centres, wiring was done, and steering and custom steering wheel were fitted. The ADR’s require that 90% of the screen needs to be wiped, which meant that my low screen would have needed 3 wipers. However, without a windscreen, or if the driver looks over the screen (as I do), a quirk in the rules waives the need for wipers!
After many hundreds of hours (1000?) of calculating, drilling, making brackets, fitting and finishing, it was all done. Then it was dismantled for painting, the seats and interior were trimmed and it was finally reassembled! An engineer was involved throughout, to assess various steps and he carried out detailed testing on completion, to prepare a report for Vic Roads, preparatory to Registration. To assist in passing engine and exhaust noise limits, he even threw his overcoat over the engine lid, but still had to bend the rules a little! The whole fascinating exercise took 8 years, with life getting in the way, but I have an 800 Kg, well balanced, tight, stable, delightful car, with a 43/ 57% weight distribution, a torquey modified 911 motor, and a great smile factor!

President’s Day Sunday 4th November 2012
SUMMER 2012
41
The 2012 competition season culminated with the running of President’s Day at Sandown. All those who had been vying all year for competition points could relax knowing the season was in the bag or there was always next year! President’s Day is a chance for us to share our passion for our beloved marque with friends, family and other car enthusiasts. It is the one day of the year we have the opportunity to take passengers and really share our motorsport experiences from what can often be referred to as a solo pursuit. For me, it was my first outing in the driver’s seat for 15 months after my car required some restoration following a high speed excursion at turn 1 Phillip Island. People have asked me, what happened? My standard reply has now become - I was actually going for a C-class track record, I was on pace to go close but I only got from the start/finish line to the apex at turn 1!! Seriously this could have been a life changing event, if it were not for the safety features in-car and my helmet it could have ended very differently. I don’t write this to dwell on the past, for me it is actually the very opposite of looking forward to 2013. However, I do want to thank all the people who helped me
both on the day of the incident and in the days and weeks after. You all know who you are, this club really amazed me, the level of support and genuine concern to see how I was doing after the event was simply overwhelming. I think it goes to the roots of what this club is about, the supportive culture and comradery of fellow competitors is one of the reasons I have got back on the horse (so to speak). Yes there is the competition and the challenge of improving your lap times but this club has a collegiate philosophy, if things aren’t going well someone will help you out, it is one of the reasons I will likely be a PCV member until VicRoads decides I’m too old to drive (and that won’t be soon…)
Anyway, back to Presidents day, the day started with the usual warnings about driving at no more than 80% (some listened!!) and more importantly “staying on the black stuff”. Unfortunately it was an early end to the day for some who tested the no tolerance approach to these basic rules, their only option was to become a passenger for the rest of the day. There was lots of excitement after the drivers briefing. Some drivers were trying new cars, some were possibly on their last outing in a car they were trying to sell (has Aaron Ireland sold his car yet? If not, the trophy engraver may as well get to work early for 2013). As well as not wanting to get my new shiny white car dirty I felt my heart racing, a sense of nerves had come over me which were maybe to be expected I guess. Luckily Simon Dunn didn’t have passengers for the first 2 sessions so I started the day as a passenger and Simon was my passenger reminding me about the highlights Sandown has to offer. This was just what I needed before getting into the driver seat myself – Thanks Simon. The overall day went like clockwork with lots of track time for drivers and passengers. There was plenty of time to scare the pants off passengers. The mystery passenger line was a good idea, this also enabled those waiting for a ride to get some laps and those who want to drive but have no passengers get onto the track. All in all, it was great way to see off the 2012 competition year. The drinks and canapés at the end of the day were well earned and gave everyone the chance to catch up on the events of the day and plans for next year. I look forward to seeing you all at the track in 2013, an off-season of practice awaits.

It was clear to all of us that the emotions are still very apparent, but also a great spirit to see the funny side of things even in our worst moments. It was a wonderful morning tea. Marysville is recovering albeit slowly, John says it needs a Pub! And we enjoyed their hospitality, every bit as much as they enjoyed having us there for the morning.
Having assembled in the top car park of the Westfield Hotel, with sufficient time for a visit to the gaming room which opened at 8.00am (for a coffee of course), it was soon time for our new Social Director, Felix Rieniets, to introduce our new President Peter Harrison. He welcomed and introduced new and first time social run members. With the formalities completed we had a brief run through of the run notes, prepared by Michael O’Brien, who warned us about the speed limits on Main Road heading to Kinglake. The first part of the run took us via Main Road, a narrow and windy (Porsche Dream) road up to Kinglake, limited in many parts to 60 kilometres per hour, and shared by many brave cyclists. We continued onto Toolangi and the magnificent Myers Creek Road down to Healesville for the run along the Maroondah Highway and Black Spur onto Marysville via Buxton – just for interest. The run notes served their purpose, every person arrived in plenty of time to enjoy another fabulous morning tea provided by the Marysville CFA, which was just as well, as the last two lines of the instructions were left off! That last right hand turn and the extra 250 meters must have provided just that little bit of an extra challenge! At morning tea CFA Captain John Radcliffe spoke a little about the fires, explaining that he doesn’t like to talk about them very much, but did share this funny story. During the fires they had assembled for a time on the oval - six of them all smokers but with only one packet of cigarettes between them. Knowing this would not go very far John knew he had another pack which he had left in his car back at the CFA station. Judy, his wife, knew that by this time John’s cars had been completely destroyed by the fires, and told him so. This didn’t seem to register very well, because when they eventually returned to the station, John was sent outside to recover the cigarettes. John, going straight to his car, and opening the door before it dawned on him that of course there was nothing left of the cigarettes but ash – along with everything else that had burnt in his car. Nevertheless, everyone else knowing the fate of the car and cigarettes wanted to share that packet, but were pleased to share Judy’s joke on John instead.
All too soon it was time to leave, and after Peter handed over our donation, we headed back along the Maroondah Highway to Healesville, Lilydale and via the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road to Olinda and the Cuckoo Restaurant.
The weather had improved to become a really pleasant day, and we were in for a treat at the Cuckoo! Service was swift, with soup served at the tables followed by the Cuckoo’s famous smorgasbord, which had everybody helping themselves to an array of different foods. Following sufficient time for the main meal we were entertained by Peter Verheyen an extraordinary Yodeller. With help from an antique collection of Austrian Cow Bells given to Tony Federico, Gillian Jellard, Gloria Tocigl, Catherine Jones and Julia Anderson (given the biggest bell of all – so she could play heavy metal!), and with the smallest bell going to John Kirby, we were subjected to a chorus of musical cow bells playing traditional Austrian melodies. The best was yet to come, a variety of national “anthems” sung by Peter Verheyen representing the different ethnic backgrounds of our group, but the surprise of the day was the transformation from little cow bell, John Kirby signing a solo performance of “Hava Nagila” – truly great. It was a lot of fun. Felix then completed the traditional prize draw, but not just with the help of our new club members. Father Christmas paid us an unexpected visit to help with the “gifts”. Santa did seem a bit too enthusiastic, and was very encouraging to the ladies – especially when it came to sitting on his lap. I missed getting all the winners, but I know John King will enjoy the bottle of Wirra Wirra Church Block, and Mark Behan, also won – Sylvia Behan too, but in an unselfish gesture handed her prize back for a redraw, which ultimately saw Michael O’Brien win a bottle of Devils Lair Hidden Cave Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. Michael overwhelmed, fully embraced Santa Anderson, and enjoyed the sit on his lap? Santa was happy but pleased it was the trim version. A beautiful day, great roads, a tremendous CFA experience, a Cuckoo affair and entertainment with a sense of humour. What a way to finish our year. Our thanks to everyone who participated in the spirit of this event – Merry Christmas to all. SUMMER 2012

Spring Run Many PCV members would assume that all good driving roads around the Goldfields of Victoria have been discovered by the Club over the years. Wrong! New Social Director and stalwart club photographer Felix managed to find a variety of interesting and little known ways to get from Rockbank to Lake Wendouree via Porcupine Ridge, as well as laying on the most perfect of spring days. In fact the spring weather was so perfect that there seemed at times to be more car clubs on the roads than ordinary vehicles, and almost every Boxster and Cab on the run folded back the canvas and soaked up some rays. With usual heart-starter coffees in hand (surprisingly good for a servo), members received their maps and newcomers were welcomed to the club. The first few kilometres of freeway were quickly dealt with before the conga line headed up through the first forest stage to Gisborne, and on to Woodend and Kyneton. The roads just got better and better particularly around the Coliban reservoir – how on earth did you find that Felix? Just before Daylesford a sharp right hand turn took us up onto the Porcupine Ridge where the beautiful views were complemented by the warm welcome we received from the CFA volunteers. ( I think the CFA is missing a huge marketing opportunity to produce a cook book – “Wholesome Food for Hungry People”). The road back down the ridge led us to the Farmer’s Arms in Daylesford, and on through Trentham to one of our favourite roads – the Blackwood/Greendale to Ballan stretch along the edge of the Lerderderg State Park. From Ballan some more little known roads took us through Edgerton and Yendon before turning towards Ballarat. Lake Wendouree in front of Sails Yacht Club was picture perfect, and an excellent lunch completed another first class Club Run. Well done to all involved!

They’re skilled and committed to their careers, same here. When I started as an apprentice at Hamiltons over 15 years ago, it was bred into the Service Team to always go the extra mile, always strive for excellence. I call it the “Hamiltons Touch”, and it’s part of my DNA. My friends deal directly with me, I do the work, I answer their questions, I sort problems. They get the Hamiltons Touch without the price. … and I’m always looking for new friends. “the car ran beautifully...the whole car was feeling more refined… A very good outcome and satisfied customer.” Stephen Marshall “my wife is very happy with her Boxster’s performance and says it even sounds better... your follow up call was also greatly appreciated.” John Mitsy

One that got away
Story & photos Richard Batchelor
Restoring the RSR was a financial challenge and after the rebuild Richard only drove it five or six times. Is it really worth 1m euros now? In the early 1970s Porsche’s fabled 917 – arguably the greatest race car of all time – was pensioned off after the FIA changed the rules to make it ineligible in international racing. Porsche turned its attention to GT racing and in 1973 took 48 examples of the brilliant Carrera RS off the assembly line and sent them to the competition department for conversion to what they called “RSR” specifications (order no. M491). This work included fitting drilled discs and four-piston finned callipers from the 917, nine and 11in wheels, wider guards, bigger air dam, 110 litre plastic fuel tank, magnesium cased gearbox with oil cooler, new engine barrels which increased the capacity to 2808 cc, Carrera 6 cams, twin plug Marelli ignition, 80% LSD, substantial suspension 52

mods and much lightening of the body to bring the weight down to about 900kg. The cars were instantly successful in racing, dominating the GT class and also winning outright such events as the Daytona 24 Hours and the Targa Florio. At least two RSRs made their way to Australia and PCV member Ian Henderson is the proud owner of one of them. In October, 1985 I paid $50k to buy the other one (chassis no. 911 3600 991 – the 32nd RSR built). The car had been raced by several owners, was highly modified (upside down gearbox, locked diff, rear firewall cut out, fabricated 935 front suspension) and its engine – which had been enlarged to 3.2 litres - was being rebuilt after a blow up. It had been
fitted with an ugly GRP body kit from the USA and basically had been turned into a sports sedan, the category in which it was competing at the time against monster Chev Monzas and the like. Among the spares which came with the car were the original flared steel front guards and a 1974 3.0 RSR rear spoiler with wide rubber lip (the original 2.8 RSR ducktail spoiler was missing). After leaving the car sitting in my garage for a few months I took it to Hamiltons to discuss having it restored to original specs. I had no interest in a concours restoration – I intended to race it. Alan Hamilton and Jim Hardman examined the chopped about LHD body and recommended that the most cost-effective
procedure would be to re-shell the car. A RHD shell was supplied for a very reasonable $8000 and work commenced. Over one year and many dollars later my new bright yellow beast was rolled into the sunlight on July 4, 1987. Active campaigning commenced at the Morwell hill climb a couple of weeks later, followed by numerous club sprints, the 1988 Grand Prix Rally to Adelaide and the Australian Porsche Cup race series from 1989-1994. Meanwhile the original body shell gathered dust in my garage. After the car had taken a few minor hits in Porsche Cup races it dawned on me that many of its components were irreplaceable, like the 917 brakes, fuel tank, 3.0 RSR rubber lipped rear spoiler, oil cooler, gearbox and of course the engine. In fact the car’s original magnesium crankcase had long been scrapped and replaced by a 930 aluminium crankcase, but with all the original RSR bits re-installed - 12 plug dizzy, titanium con rods, slide throttle fuel injection etc. (the original engine had high butterfly throttles but when I acquired the car it had the later 3.0 RSR slide throttles). I decided to remove for safe keeping all the original RSR bits. My mechanic, Fikret Bagatir, built up another 3.2 litre race engine using steel con rods and some non-original slide throttles from the UK. A 915 gearbox with Quaife LSD was fitted in place of the RSR transaxle and the 917 brakes were replaced with 928S4 items. Other new items included a standard fuel tank and an all-plastic rear spoiler. With all the genuine RSR bits now on the garage shelf, we went racing again. In the early nineties I started having the original RSR body shell restored, the intention being to reunite all the genuine RSR body and mechanical components. However, by 1995 I was feeling the financial strain of this major project plus the cost of racing and developing the (now turbocharged) clone, which I had pranged expensively at the 1994 AGP meeting in Adelaide. I decided it was time to build up my share portfolio to fund my eventual retirement. Reluctantly, the now fully restored and immaculate original RSR was put up for sale. I advertised it locally and overseas for about a year, figuring that with the car’s history, which included race wins in the hands of Jim McKeown, John Latham and Peter Fitzgerald, it had to
be worth around $180k. However times were tough in the mid-nineties and as the months rolled by without any serious enquiries I started reducing the price. Finally an advertisement in the UK magazine 911 and Porsche World caught the attention of a gentleman in Bremen, Germany. With my German speaking mechanic Fikret translating we agreed on a price of $125k. That was in March, 1996 and I used a VicRoads permit to drive the unsilenced race car to the shipping company. Later that year I also sold the RSR clone, which had been rebuilt following its Adelaide shunt, and its new owner took it to the UK when transferred there in his job (I have not heard of the car since). The shares which I bought with the sales proceeds have increased in value - but not as much as the RSR. However, unlike cars, shares also pay dividends – very handy in my current retired state! The RSR is currently for sale in Germany for one million and fifty thousand euros. Footnote: Richard is a former editor of Porsche Parade. After selling the RSR and clone he later competed in Marque Sports with a Porsche 934 turbo look-alike and in historic racing with a Sunbeam Tiger and a BMW 3.0CSi. Currently he drives a 997 Carrera S on club outings and the occasional track day.
The American body kit on the RSR when acquired by Richard looked crude but provided good downforce according to the previous owner.
The RSR engine prior to refurbishment – note slide throttles from 1974 3.0 RSR. It produced about 340 bhp
These front brakes were designed to slow the Porsche 917 from 385 km/h on the Mulsanne straight. RSR owners never complained about their brakes! SUMMER 2012

Mid Week Run to Lorne 24th October 2012
For this run we had 27 people registered and the meeting point was Inverleigh, on the Hamilton Highway. The Red Door Café provided a convenient and a convivial place to enjoy morning tea. After a briefing and handout of notes, the group moved onto the Winchelsea Road, which wound its way through large spring fresh paddocks of wheat and barley. The countryside looked so abundant. After negotiating through Winchelsea, the group went through Deans Marsh where the road then started to climb into the Otway Ranges with some lovely twists and turns. This stretch of road from Deans Marsh to Lorne is a beautiful section which goes through the forest all the way to Lorne. Some people may not remember that this entire section of road was totally burnt in the 1983 Black Friday fires. Although restricted to 80 kph, with all the twists and turns, this is a very enjoyable driving section. We re-grouped at the car park at the Pier Restaurant. Those who did not want to drive the Ocean Road to Wye River and back, stayed in Lorne until the group returned from this next section. Everyone arrived back at the Pier Restaurant with big smiles on their faces, so one can surmise they had a lot of fun. A big plus was, no one got lost or made the wrong turns on the entire run. Well done. At 1 o’clock we were seated at our tables for lunch and that took up the next two hours. Judging by the comments, everyone enjoyed the Mid Week run and some were asking when was the next one before they left for their respective home journeys.

Technical Night GT3/RS/RSR Register 30 October, 2012
Plenty is never enough… In late October, 17 PCV members arrived at the Fitzgerald Racing Services premises in Box Hill to learn more about the tuning of high performance German cars in general, and Porsche GT3s in particular, from Peter Fitzgerald and his son, Christian. The evening kicked off encouragingly with some superb home made burgers courtesy of Carol Fitzgerald with beers and ‘softies’ and some lively conversation. A brief tour of the premises followed, punctuated by ‘war stories’ of successful / ‘interesting’ upgrades to various vehicles on display.
GT3 owners rightly love their cars and are mostly ‘satisfied’ with their performance! However, the range of the possible for ECU tuning, exhaust enhancements, suspension modifications, revised gear ratios, lightweight body panels / windows and many more enhancements was truly mouthwatering with the sky (and your wallet) the only limit. Thanks to Peter for his time to support the Porsche Club of Victoria and educating the PCV members on the range of the possible when ‘plenty is never enough’.
Back outside the main workshop, Peter talked through a range of modifications to a customer’s 996-1 GT3 to achieve maximum performance and remain within PCV Class rules. Inside, attention turned to ‘Peter’s’ 997-1 GT3 Open Class winning club car. Easier to say what hasn’t been changed rather than list all of the modifications. A serious weapon in great hands. Following Peter’s presentation, a key part of the night was for members to ask questions specific to their individual requirements and needs. Suffice to say, the attendees took full advantage of this and gained some extremely valuable and detailed information in the process.

Run to Dromana Estate Torque Tube / GT3 & RS Register 25 November 2012
Meeting at the beach in North Brighton
Taking in the views at our morning tea stop
Tasty Times in Tuerong On Sunday November 25, The Torque Tube and GT3 Registers combined for their last register run of the year. The opportunity to join the two registers was a great initiative by the Torque Tube guys as it gave an added dimension to the run and created an opportunity for members of the two groups to meet each and share their joy of the Marque. The meeting place was the ever-popular reserve at the beach at North Brighton. A good choice I thought as I was driving there, forgetting that the ‘Beach Road Cycling Brigade’ would be out in force The chat was lively and animated in the car park making it difficult for Angelo to get his briefing started! With maps distributed and words of encouragement delivered, 25 drivers & co-pilots in fourteen cars were off. A wide variety of cars registered for the run. 944s, narrow bodied & modern 911s, various cabs & targas, 928s, Boxsters, GT3s and a Maserati. Congratulations to the owners as the cars were all polished and very well presented. The drive started with a gentle ‘transport’ stage down Beach Road, avoiding all the Lycra Warriors of course to Arthurs Seat. Light traffic, clearing 58

skies and gorgeous bay views made the drive enjoyable for our convoy. With military precision, and a few very fast corners up Arthur Seat Road, Angelo had scheduled us to arrive at exactly 11am which coincided with the opening time of the café at Arthurs Seat. I assume that the café staff were pleased to see us and morning refreshments were duly ordered and consumed. After enjoying the views from the top of Arthurs seat lookout and a few mandatory photos , the pre-lunch leg got underway. It was an interesting and picturesque route taking us away from Arthurs Seat, towards Cape Schanck, onto Flinders through Balnarring terminating in Tuerong at our destination at the Dromana Estate Winery. I would like to share stories about the run but I was ‘Tail end Charlie’ and totally missed the very clear instructions indicating the tight FIRST TURN after setting off and completely lost the pack! At lunch I tried to convince the Torque Tube folk that it was because the GT3s are so much quicker than the front engine cars I missed the turn. By the look on their faces, I don’t think they bought it… Angelo arranged for our cars to be parked around the circular driveway at the front of the restaurant / winery and they made a fantastic sight. Before lunch, a private wine tasting was scheduled and one of the young winemakers very enthusiastically guided us through all of the wines, variously describing them in female terms or likening them to car models and was making it very entertaining. The local wines were superb, and it wasn’t long before a few bottles of their finest found their way onto tables. The premium chardonnay and pinot noir I think were the favourites on the day. Lunch was next and we were duly seated in a shaded private balcony overlooking the front gardens and our cars of course. Choices of mixed local Mornington produce entrees and a
Fun was had hearing about the wines choice of mains were made and the group settled down to more lively conversation until the food arrived. We continued to enjoy the fellowship, food, wine and coffee before winding up with more photos and a rendition of “staying Alive” from a few of the more pickled one’s in the group (Walter, Tony and the ladies) sometime a little before four. Many thanks again to Tony & Angelo for inviting the GT3 Register to join in on what was a very well organised and extremely enjoyable event.

The spectacular view from the Murchison Gap Lookout
8 cars and 17 people turned up for our combined Modern 911 and Turbo Registers run on Sunday 7th October; with a mixture of 996s, 997s, a 964, a 993, a Boxster and a Turbo. The day was overcast and threatening with rain. We met at the McDonalds Restaurant on the corner of Blackburn Road and Doncaster Road in Doncaster East. Members on the drive came from far and wide, including Warrnambool and Bairnsdale. Despite the start of Daylight Saving Time everyone made it to Doncaster on time. After an introduction from Geoffrey Mould, the Modern 911 Register Co-Captain, together with the handing out of maps and instructions, it was off on our way heading North up Blackburn Road towards Warrandyte. Maps and route instructions were provided that were easy to read and noone got lost on the way. We travelled through
Warrandyte, Kangaroo Ground, Yarra Glen, Healesville, Kinglake, Kinglake West, Flowerdale and Strath Creek where we regrouped for a photo shoot and spectacular view from the Murchison Gap Lookout. The weather stayed reasonably dry with only a little light rain from time to time. Retracing our steps we headed back through Strath Creek and via Mount Sugarloaf into Yea for our lunch stop at the historic Peppercorn Hotel, where we parked our cars out the front for another photo shoot.
Peppercorn Hotel for an excellent meal and if you have had too much they have 5 rooms of accommodation. After a satisfying lunch it was a quiet run back to town either via the B300 Melba Highway or retrace you way back to Strath Creek on to the M1 via Broadford.
Lunch of 4 courses was served at the Hotel on one large long table. There was a lucky chair prize of a bottle of local sparkling wine that was won by Sylvia Pettit-Rogers. Wines and the lunch meal were excellent and much recommended if you are travelling in the vicinity. Call in at the 60

PCV members shine at Sandown historics November’s major historic racing festival at Sandown saw a number of PCV members making an impact in several categories. Rusty French make a fine debut in Group S with his ex-Perry Spiridis De Tomaso Pantera, comfortably winning all three races in the category from Sydneysider Geoff Morgan (2.7 Carrera). Stan Adler, Rohan Little and Sven Burchartz also upheld the honour of Porsche in Group S, with Stan taking a couple of third places in his 2.7 Carrera. Sven is a newcomer to the category, after competing for several years in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge (which he won one year), and his 2.7 Carrera looked the part, with flames belching from the exhaust on the over-run. It is easy to believe rumours that Sven’s engine is putting out over 300 bhp. Former PCV President (2007/08) Jeff Thomas parked his Porsche for the weekend and instead joined the Group S combatants with his Datsun 260Z race car, embarrassing a few of the Porsche drivers along the way, it has to be said! Other PCV members taking part included Ian Ross, who had a busy weekend driving a Ford Falcon XD in Group A & C races and a Shelby Cobra in Regularity, Perry Spiridis (Group Nc Boss Mustang), Ian Henderson (Porsche 911R in Regularity), Paul Girt, whose Mini had the measure of Mini legend Ted Brewster in Group Nb, Mark Johnson (Group Nc Porsche 911ST), Phil Verwoert (R Sports Graduate M8F – looking exactly like a McLaren M8F right down to its orange paint job) and Stewart Webster (Porsche 356) and Tony Rogers (911 2.4E) in Regularity. Sorry if I have missed any PCV members in the above list but the weekend certainly showed what catholic taste in cars our members have, unlike many one-eyed members of other single marque clubs.
