The series that rocked our childhood

W

e all remember the first series that rocked our snacks when we came back from school and our school holidays. For most of our ZiePlot editors, these series are those of Disney Channel. We all remember the famous commercial where we saw our favourite actors drawing the channel’s logo. From That’s So Raven to K.C Undercover passing by Hannah Montana, there is something for everyone. For Simon, who spent the Wednesday afternoons of his childhood on Disney Channel, his heart is torn between the different series. After a long hesitation, his favorite remains Wizards of Waverly Place, THE channel’s fantasy sitcom. This one is also the heart-stopper from Léa. As for Romane, who has an unconditional love for the Hispanic world, her favorite series is of course Violetta. Mixing song, dance and love story, Violetta conquered her from A to Z. Maxime has a preference for the channel’s family sitcom: Good Luck Charlie. Finally, Lou spent his childhood watching episodes The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and The Suite Life On Deck.

No need to tell him «Yes no, maybe, i don’t know, can you repeat the question ?» Our editor’s heart beats for this little genius who made a whole generation laugh! «You know you love me, XOXO». Do you know this sentence like the back of your hands? Then, like Lou, Gossip Girl is THE series of your childhood! It must be said that the chic and high society universe of New York has made more than a generation dream. Who never imagined themselves in the place of Blair or Serena? Not Lou in any case! But our travel in the series that rocked our childhood does not stop there! Moreover, speaking of travel, Vive la Colo has seduced the young Romane. At the same time, to integrate a big colo full of teenagers having fun, who didn’t dream of it ?

And for Simon, it’s also a French series that reminds him of his old days: Une Famille Formidable! How can you resist this great family, led by Catherine and Jacques, where deception, drama and humor Thanks to Disney Plus, our editors can go back to follow one another to perfection? This is how childhood at any time and review all the Disney young Simon spent his rainy Sunday afternoons! Channel series. The series that revolutionised the world of series

The Cosby Show

A

s we know, some series follow one another and look alike. The themes, characters and plots are similar. But in the middle of all this, some series stand out. They offer us new concepts and new themes to address. A series that has "revolutionized the world of series" is different in the way it tells its story, its characters and its plot. But also its universe, its theme or the way it can be watched. It is a series that breaks the habits of the spectators by offering them a whole new way of looking at and appreciating a story. It revolutionizes the world in the sense that it brings a touch of novelty to a sector where it is difficult to be creative and innovative.

the scene takes place: viewers can therefore live with the characters. The series deals with taboo subjects in society (harassment, rape, homosexuality, disability, religion...) and each season focuses on a different character. Viewers can follow them in real time on social networks and stay in touch with them. The concept of living at the same time as the characters and discovering the plots and excerpts in real time allows a real immersion in SKAM's universe. We get attached to the characters and what they experience. The suspense of waiting several hours or days before the sequel gives the viewer a place as a full-fledged character within the series.

As you will have understood, our editors are The multiple versions of SKAM are a perfect fans and advise you the SKAM series whose example of this. Originally Norwegian, the messages and themes are important and series has been deployed worldwide with crucial in our society. It's also one of the best dozens of adaptations. POPCORN We could think that all the episodes of Casa de Papel are written before the shooting, as usual, for the overall coherence, especially with all the turnarounds of situations every two minutes. But on the contrary, the scripts are written during the shooting, to allow the writers to better adapt to the situations and make the right decisions for the rest of the story.

When the taboo becomes the subject...

I

t's 2020 and when we hear about sex, most people are embarrassed. We live in a society where it is taboo to talk about sexual relationships and sexual orientations, whether they are straight, gay, bi, trans or other. Talking about sex with your parents or friends can be very complicated. Although the subject is increasingly discussed in society, there is still some discomfort with the subject. Some families are completely hermetic about the subject and do not wish to express themselves on the issue with their children. However, it is important to talk about it with a teenager when he or she has a lot of questions. In response to this mentality, the Netflix platform has created the Sex Education series. This series has shaken the codes of society. Sex Education has addressed important topics such as sexual identity, the notion of consent, anatomy, STIs (sexually transmitted infections) ... In line with the times, the series frees up speech on taboo subjects. And it feels good! It's 2020 and still far too many people are being harassed, raped or committing suicide. Especially among young teenagers. Sexual assault, harassment and suicide have become a common scourge in high schools (French and American). Faced with subjects considered taboo by society, the series 13 reasons why dares to address these issues. Skillfully staged, this series traces the events that led one teenage girl to kill herself after months of sexual harassment and abuse in her high school. 13 reasons why has been at the heart of many controversies following its broadcast. The scenes were considered shocking and difficult to watch. I feel like saying "Fortunately"! If these scenes were simple to watch, it would have become easy to watch. by Lea

Uncomfortably hilarous and naughty

POPCORN You may not have noticed it, but all the titles of the episodes of Grey's Anatomy are titles of more or less well-known songs. Even after 17 seasons, the series continues to pay homage to music with its episodes. An incredible consistency. And of course, always related to the events of the episodes in question. 10

The series that have lasted Loved it ! RIP Cory Monteith too long and Naya Rivera

S

ome series are too short, they don’t explore all the potential their universe can offer and finally, they just waste all the possibilities of a good plot. But the opposite is possible too: we all know one series that is too long which disappointed us until the very end because everything was wasted by the scenario and his longevity. But what is the problem with this series that have lasted too long? There are different kinds of “lasted too long”: the intrigue is too used, the plot was extended too much in order to realize a maximum of seasons for profit, the intrigues are repetitive and never afford anything … In this article, we will explain and analyze the reasons why some TV shows are too long. First, some series are released and become an international success story: Riverdale or La Casa de Papel for example. That success is explained by the originality of the plot or the importance of the messages transmitted through the show, as in 13 reasons why. But these series are a good example because they were a huge buzz that the creators used and overexploited. Indeed, creating new seasons for a show must involve a general coherence with the original plot but neither being repetitive. And here is the issue: the show listed upper has one or combined all these difficulties. For example, the Riverdale’s recents seasons don’t match with the previous seasons, so that the viewer is lost and fed up.

the beginning happens to irritate you. A second big mistake, such as Glee did, is the terrible big change of the casting in the middle of the seasons. The departure of the actors caused a big change for the viewers which wasn’t appreciated. Here is the question: should the show continue without the original casting or stop the series ? For the redactors of Zie Plot, having more than 3 actors leaving the show at the same time should be a good reason to stop it. Elite is a good example for that: 3 of the mains characters, and the most appreciated, are leaving the show. The fans are uncertain about the quality of the show without Lucrecia, Carla and Nadia … Season 4 is being produced, we will see if it’s worth it! To finish, the last problem of some series is their longevity. The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, the french show Plus Belle la Vie … These series have more than 20 years, are still being produced and consequently have no interesting intrigues because everything has already been done. And, honestly, who knows perfectly everything of the 12 000 episodes of the Young and the Restless?

To conclude, the end of a show is just as important as the beginning. The most memorable and interesting series are the ones that are breathtaking from A to Z. The ones where the intrigue takes you every minute, that stays in your mind. Of course, the series mentioned above are not bad, we even enjoyed But the intrigue can also be the main them, but we keep bitter memories of problem of a too long series: Pretty our disappointment. Little Liars is a good example of a too long plot, that becomes annoying and by Maxime the atmosphere you liked so much at 11

What is a cult series?

W

e often hear the term «cult series». Even too often ... And in the end, nobody really knows what it is. The ZiePlot team is here to set the record straight. In the collective spirit, it’s a favourite series, unique to each and every one of us, that you can’t get tired of and that you watch at the first slack moment. But a cult series is actually a series that brings something new to the genre to which it belongs. In a way, they are shows that completely revolutionise their genres. They are also characterised by the fact that years later they are still being shown on television and still attract a lot of fans. Some cult series also serve as a significant reference for certain people. Cult status, therefore, is only acquired after several years of a great and prolonged success. Take the example of Friends. Everyone has already seen at least one episode of this series by zapping or has heard about it. A short summary of the synopsis, even if it is probably not necessary : the series follows the adventures of 6 friends Chandler, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel & Ross. Love, family, work and friendship punctuate their New York lives. Over the course of these 10 seasons, the series has completely revolutionized the sitcom genre. What is part of the success of Friends is that everyone can identify with a character. Indeed, the series doesn’t feature one person as the main character but a bunch of friends. This allows viewers to identify with them in different situations. Friends is the perfect bunch of friends you dream of belonging to.

Friends is THE series that set the trend for comedy series centred on bands of friends. It gave birth to many sitcoms based on the same pattern and characteristics that made the series a success. Among these shows, we can recognize How I Met Your Mother , New Girl or The Big Bang Theory. How I Met Your Mother is the perfect example: it’s the story of a bunch of friends living in a big city, whose love life, work and daily life are followed ... and who always find themselves in their favourite place. Unlike Friends with the Central Perk, they meet in a bar. And contrary to Friends, How I Met Your Mother has a character that is more prominent than the others: Ted Mosby because he is the main plot. Not to speak only of sitcoms, we can also take the example of Urgences. Admittedly, it is not as well known as Friends or similar series such as Grey’s Anatomy and Dr House. This series is considered THE model for medical series. Originally, NBC was not enthusiastic about the project of Urgences and its subject matter was too complex with a medical vocabulary that was difficult to understand.Luckily they didn’t win, we wouldn’t have had Grey’s Anatomy and especially Dr. Shepherd! To conclude, cult series such as Friends or Urgences have marked their genres in their own way. They are memorable and serve as a reference for both fans and other series.

«Thank you» Living Single cast for leading the way

POPCORN The Dothraki language, from Game of Thrones, was created especially for the series and contains no less than three thousand words. When you see how Emilia Clark has appropriated the language, you are stunned. She is indeed able to deliver entire speeches in this language in a very convincing way.

Rather sweet or salty? Which nibbles for your series?

W

ell, let’s not beat about the bush. Watching series is fine but snacking in front of the screen is even better! A plaid, a bowl full of pastries and your favorite show… You can’t tell us that it doesn’t make you fall. Alone, with friends or romantic, everybody succumbs to a Netflix & Chill moment. In the editorial team, the battle rages on. Impossible to reach an agreement between salty or sweety’s popcorn. For Lea and Simon, it’s salty and nothing else. For Lou and Romane, it’s more sweety, and caramelize is even better! Maxime finds the solution to this debate, he mixes both. And you? You’re more sweet or salty?

There is a little choosing of our favorite snacks, whether sweet or salty! Some choices are more improbable than others... In our unlikely top 5 we find the saucisson for Simon, black olives for Lou, pickles and grated cheese for Maxime, croutons for Romane and a little menu Nutella followed by pretzels for Lea. For a more “basic” snack, we choose some stuff like popcorn, M&M’s, crisps, almonds or crackers. And you ,what is your guilty pleasure in terms of nibbling?

by Romane

Salty, most definitely !

The series that stopped too early

S

ometimes series don't need to last very long to make an impression on viewers' minds. One season is enough to become attached to characters and follow their adventures with passion. These series we're going to talk about haven't had the time to prove themselves, but they've managed to carve out a place for themselves in the television landscape. Dear series gone too soon, we do not forget you. Sense 8 : In spite of an interesting and different story from the ones we usually see. With strong messages that are conveyed such as homosexuality, splendid sets shot in real places in different countries, Netflix decided to interrupt the series after two seasons due to lack of budget.

Mindhunter : The Netflix series, which the platform felt was not profitable enough, came to an abrupt halt after two seasons full of plots and unspoken points from the two FBI agents who devised investigative methods that were revolutionary in the history of profiling. A series that leaves us hungry. Chilling adventures of Sabrina : This series developed by Netflix comes to an abrupt end after a season four rich in emotions and intrigue. Clearly, there are still plenty of moments and worlds to explore, and questions to answer! Devious Maid : The American series ABC has been cancelled after four very good seasons. Once again, the last season ends with one disappearance and many more plots still pending.

However, a two-hour film was made in order to conclude all the intrigues. But of course, we remain frustrated because the ending could have been much more developed.

POPCORN The Walking Dead is without a doubt one of the most characterkilling series. It happened very often, so the team got into the habit of organizing ÂŤdeath dinnersÂť to pay tribute to the actor who was going to leave them. Of course, everything must be done in the greatest secrecy to avoid any risk of spoilers.

Our editors' heart-stopper

W

e all watch tens of series, if not more. And one day we discover a show that overwhelms us and shakes up all our expectations. That’s what our columnists Lea and Romane felt with the spanish show, Las Chicas del Cable.

courage and determination with so much strength that everyone feels dragged into their fight.

First of all, we had a firm favorite for the theme and the story of this show. Las Chicas del Cable tells the story of 6 young women going in quest of independence during the twenties in Madrid. This series deals with powerful and very complex subjects at that time. This is a time in history when women are highly dependent on their fathers or husbands. They can’t do 100% of what they want in life. This series allows us to follow their lives and their fight for freedom.

Let’s talk about the crazy ending of this show !! From our earliest childhood, we are used to happy endings, “and they live happily ever after” blablabla... Unconsciously, we expect the same thing to happen with our telephone ladies. What was our surprise facing this disconceting end ?! At the time, our hearts break in the face of this harrowing ending.

As women, this story has inevitably left its mark on us. Seeing women fighting for rights that seem so vital awakens in us the flame of what is now called feminism, a word unknown at the time of the series' story. This show gives us the desire to stand up and fight hand in hand with these women to continue to change the world we live in. They share their

// SPOILER ALERT // If you haven’t seen this series, this part isn’t for you.

By questioning ourselves, and once our emotions regained, this ending is the best we can ever think of for this series. It summarized perfectly their fight in all the 6 seasons and ended it on a high note. We can’t be more proud of those young women’s fate.

SKAM’s actor Axel Auriant aka Lucas Lallemant @lucas.llmnt @axelauriant Young actor of 22 years old Axel Auriant has already created his place in the industry. From a young age, he has already walked the floor of several theatre stages. Today he has given more than 500 performances. SKAM France remains the series that has propelled his fame on an international level. He agreed to answer some of our questions.

Why becoming an actor? I became an actor in the theater at first because I wanted to go on stage and play in front of a large audience. And the fact of giving body and interpreting characters made me want to go further and participate in film shoots. And when I arrived on Skam France and saw the societal dimension of the series, with all these very taboo but very important subjects, it made me want to defend this kind of project even more.

For you, what is a good series/ character? I don’t think there are necessarily good or bad characters in fiction. I think that each character exists to bring something to the story and to the viewer. But if we really had to qualify what a good character is, I would say that viewers must be able to identify with him. He has to be able to convey messages, to help the viewer fight several situations he may be confronted with. He can also evolve, because we all change in life.

What is the series that made the most impression on you?

Which one rocked your childhood/ adolescence?

I think it’s The Office, because beyond making me laugh, it has helped me a lot in my job. When I arrived on the set of Skam France, my character Lucas was quite reserved, he didn’t talk too much. I asked David the director how the viewers would understand Lucas’ state of mind, and he said «look at The Office, the looks to camera are incredible» and they were, and it helped me a lot to interpret Lucas’ personality.

Friends of course! My parents were fans and I grew up with the last few seasons. Afterwards, I wanted to watch the whole series, since the first season came out in 1994, and it reminded me so much of my childhood, my parents at night in front of the TV laughing! Really, I have great memories of this series and it’s the one that marked my childhood the most.

18

Did you choose Skam and the role of Lucas Lallemant? If yes, why ? Yes, from the first audition I knew I wanted to play Lucas. Even if he is cold and reserved at first, he has a lot to offer the world, a lot of beautiful messages to convey and a lot of incredible things to experience. Obviously, I loved shooting season 3, which is centered on the character of Lucas, since we really understand all his complexity.

What did it bring you personally? I think the character of Lucas brought me strength and courage, I know it sounds cliché *laughs*, but having to assume your homosexuality to everyone around you, it takes so much courage that the fact of playing him immediately influenced me, it’s so strong that it goes beyond comedy. What did you want to pass on to people ? Precisely, it’s in line with what I was saying earlier, with this role I wanted to bring courage and strength to the spectators who are afraid to reveal their homosexuality. The best moment I’ve experienced in recent years is when I received a message from a young man one day, who told me that he had managed to assume his homosexuality with his family thanks to season 3 of Skam France. That’s precisely when you tell yourself that you’re really doing something good, that you’re succeeding in transmitting what you wanted. There’s really a huge sense of pride, to tell yourself that this role and this series are very important to a lot of people, and that they are changing their lives.

O

ne show, a plethora of plots, a multitude of characters, nouns and different stories for one thing: The Iron Throne. I must say, this is impossible for me to resume Game of Thrones. The entire story is complex and honestly it must be seen to get the entire essence of this masterpiece. So, what should I say to convince you to turn on the TV and to immerse yourself in the unfair world of Westeros?

Finally, Game of Thrones is a real awards machine. The last episode of the season 7 was seen by 16,5 millions of people in the USA, a world record for a TV show. According to HBO, the episodes of the last seasons were followed by 30 millions of people. The budget of the 8th season, the last one, is also incredible: 15 millions dollars per episode. To sum it up, Game of Thrones is also to be awarded with the most Emmys: 47.

First, Game of Thrones is a complete series. A ton of themes are covered: political intrigue, family affairs, wars, fantasy… So many items have been combined to create one of the most exciting shows of the new era. Game of Thrones and “breathtaking” are synonyms: you can’t anticipate any of the events because the characters are like us: unpredictable.

So, is Game of Thrones worth it? Yes, a thousand times, yes. The show is so enthralling, you’ll want to binge watch every episode til the end. Only, I must warn you, the 8thseason can be disappointing. But, this end is a good way to finish the scenario (the ending is open for discussion). As far as I’m concerned, Game of Thrones is a mustbe-seen show, a 21th century masterpiece, with an incredible cast and an incredible story whose And this impossibility to anticipate any actions of the purpose is this terrible Iron Throne. characters makes them credible. No one in the show is perfect, all the actions are linked to their stories, to their family, and we can identify with them. There is no middle ground. is full of violence, injustice, darkness, and ambiguous - Cersei Lannister morality. We don’t want to love them, but the story is so gripping that appreciating and caring for them is compulsory.

Certainly it’s a super girly series but it completely changed my life at one point. It was partly in The Bold Type that I learned about the profession of communicator. I

discovered Grey’s Anatomy when I was around twelve. I think there were already 8 or 9 seasons. I watched it very quickly. The characters became like a part of my family. Viewing this show from my 12 to now makes me grow and evolve at the same time as the characters. Grey’s Anatomy offers so much more than just an hospital series. It was a moment in my life where I wasn’t in a very good mood. I discovered this TV show and it rocked my life. I found myself face to characters sharing my scars. Seeing them evolve helped me to evolve too and get out of this complicated phase. « You were like coming up for fresh air. It’s like I was drowning and you saved me. » - Dereck Shepherd In one episode, we can go through all the emotions : joy, sadness, anger… That’s what I find amazing in this

show. The diversity of the characters allows us to become attached to and identify with them. We can follow their success, their defeats, their feelings… This evolution brings us many life lessons that we’ll all experience one day. Grey’s Anatomy teaches us to be ourselves and be proud of that. It shows us that our idea of happiness is subjective. Our happiness is hidden all around us in everyday life. We just have to take a fresh look at life to realise it. We’ll all gonna have bad phases to go through but none is insurmountable. For all these reasons, I think Grey’s Anatomy is worth the journey. What’s broken can be mended, what’s hurt can be healed. No matter how dark it gets, the sun’s gonna rise again. - Meredith Grey

sometimes give up on our dreams without suffering and being unhappy. On the contrary, some realized dreams do not bring us all the happiness we hoped for.

But beyond that, One Tree Hill is a TV show that literally changed my life and my way of seeing, anticipating and accepting things. It shows that we are all capable of changing and evolving. Everyone can identify with a character, his mistakes, his victories, and his heartache. The series is full of lessons on all aspects of life: love, success, cowardice, loneliness, death, nostalgia, passing time, regrets.

These are the specific reasons why everyone should watch One Tree Hill at least once in their lives.

I feel like people get lost when they think happiness as a destination. We always think that someday we’ll be happy. When we get that car or that job or that person in our lives who will fix everything. But happiness is a mood, and it’s a condition, not a destination. It’s like being tired or hungry, it’s not One Tree Hill shows us how happiness is never permanent. It comes and goes and that’s okay. If acquired, that the most beautiful things can become people would think that way, they’d find happiness the most difficult to overcome. Life is short, we more often. - Julian Baker don’t know what tomorrow will bring, so we must seize every opportunity to laugh, to live, and to see how beautiful the world is.
