When we set out to design the perfect woollen travel cardigan, we knew we had to start with the right fabric. There was only one choice – extrafine merino wool. Because we specify an extremely high quality of fibre, this classic cardigan is incredibly soft and luxuriously comfortable – with none of the coarseness associated with ordinary wool. We’ve also cut it slightly longer and with deep side slits for easy pocket access.

ELEMENTAL PROTECTION
Rain
Wet clothing transmits body heat nearly twenty-five times faster than dry. All clothing with this symbol is guaranteed to be waterproof. And highly breathable membrane technology means you won’t get wet from the inside either.
Wind
Cutting down windchill can make more difference to your comfort and safety than the amount of insulation you are wearing. Garments that carry this icon are wind resistant.
Heat
Keeping comfortable in the heat can be harder than keeping warm in the cold. Comfort strategies are limited. We choose the right weight of fabrics, employ AirflowTM weaves, use Dynamic Moisture ControlTM technology and fabrics that protect from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Cold
We use a wide variety of technical man-made and high-performance natural fabrics to offer protection from the cold. All our products are measured and scientifically Tog rated before being given a Rohan Cold Pro rating. Most base layers will be assigned a Cold Pro: Base rating. Most fleeces will be rated Cold Pro: Mid. Synthetic wadded jackets and lightweight down jackets will generally offer Cold Pro: High levels of protection. Cold Pro: Extreme is reserved for our very warmest garments.
Sun
All Rohan garments carrying our sun protection icon have been tested in accordance with recognised international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection and are rated as UPF 40+ *
*Only covered areas are protected. The protection offered may be reduced with use or if stretched or wet. The fabric provides UVA + UVB protection from the sun. Everyone has different skin. Where possible, stay in the shade and cover as much of your body as possible. For extra protection, wear a SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply throughout the day.
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES
Lightweight
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970s, we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. All our clothing is engineered to achieve this. The weight is shown against each garment.
Packable
Low pack size is a benefit, whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
Fast Drying
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
FUNCTIONAL FEATURES
Secure Pockets
Pocket design at Rohan is about precision, detail and keeping your most important stuff safe at times when losing keys, passports and wallet is more than just an inconvenience. Pockets are secured in different ways, either with ‘touch and close’ fasteners together with roll-over tops or zipped closures. Sometimes they are hidden and feature discreet micro zips.
Stretch
Building stretch into our fabrics allows us to make very comfortable, streamlined clothing. Clothes don’t flap in the wind, they work well in a layering system without bulking up, and because there is less fabric, they are lighter, dry quicker and pack smaller – all critical Rohan virtues.
PackpocketTM
Good design is more often about what to take off than what to put on. And clever design is about giving one feature two functions. That’s why many Rohan garments feature an internal pocket that doubles as a PackpocketTM for easy storage.
Minimum Layer ConstructionTM
By stripping out unnecessary fabric and avoiding the common practice of double fabric panels, we gain many advantages. Clothing is lighter and less bulky, as well as quicker drying and more breathable.
Reversible
Some of our jackets have a split personality. By turning them inside out you get a different look, and sometimes, a varying level of performance. Another way we make our clothing more versatile.
OUR TECHNOLOGIES
BarricadeTM
BarricadeTM is Rohan’s own fully waterproof and breathable fabric. It has been tested to withstand water from moving through the fabric under high pressure (20,000mm JIS L 1092-B). Breathability tests have proved that perspiration can be moved at a rate of at least 20,000g/sqm/24h (JIS L1099-B1). All BarricadeTM garments are seam sealed to ensure waterproof performance. Unlike other inert waterproof fabrics, Barricade’s levels of breathability respond to humidity, increasing performance alongside increases in temperature. It’s also easy to wash with liquid detergent and built to last.
Thermal Insulation
With a better warmth-to-weight ratio than fleece and better performance when wet than conventional down, InsuloftTM is the most practical and thermally efficient insulator available. It is an advanced synthetic that is tough, lightweight, packable, fast drying and easy to wash.
Anti Odour Silver
Tiny traces of silver are distributed evenly throughout the fibres of a garment. These inhibit the development of microbes that can grow exponentially in warm and damp areas, resulting in mould and odour. It is permanent, and will not wash out or wear out.
Insect Protection
Insect Shield® technology converts clothing into convenient and comfortable protection against biting insects.* Each Insect Shield® labelled garment is treated with permethrin –an invisible and odourless ingredient which protects against insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges. The treatment is so tightly bonded to the fabric fibres that it retains effectiveness through the expected life of the product –well beyond the limits of most fabric finishes.

Dynamic Moisture ControlTM
Dynamic Moisture ControlTM is a wicking treatment that rapidly spreads the moisture our bodies create across the surface area of a garment. This is achieved either through the technical construction of the garment or by a performance coating. This ensures that the garment dries more quickly and you stay more comfortable for longer periods during exercise.
AirflowTM Construction
Staying cool in the heat is actually more challenging than keeping warm in the cold. The most effective fabric technology is to use open weave structures that disperse heat through convective cooling.
Durable Water RepellencyTM

Cool Touch
Unique Cool Touch technology works by embedding microscopic mica crystals into the knit of the fabric. This has an active, cooling effect on the body. In the search for new tactics to solve the age old problem of how to keep cooler in hot weather, Cool Touch represents a real breakthrough and a significant step forward.
Merino Wool
Merino wool is nature’s finest technical fabric – it has an uncanny ability to regulate your temperature in a wide range of conditions. It also has a natural resistance to the build-up of odour, making it perfect for demanding use and travel.

Down
Nothing beats the warmth-to-weight ratio of down – nature’s natural insulator. For the coldest climates we use 650+ fill power. This is measured using the European system; the North American system produces much higher numbers. Experience has taught us that this level gives the perfect balance. It’s warm enough for inactive times yet won’t cook you when things get moving.
Hydrophobic Down
Hydrophobic down uses nano technology to encourage water to bond to itself rather than the down. It dries 60% faster and retains far more loft than untreated down. It adds no measurable weight and has no effect on the fill power. The water repellent down has already been washed 20 times with no degradation of its performance. We use premium white goose down to a fill power of 650+ with 80% down, 20% feathers.
