NEITHER DOES THE MATCHING KNEE PADS, OR AERODYNAMIC AFROS OF THE 1970’S. MOST PEOPLE FROM THE “OLD SCHOOL” WILL FAVOR THE TEAMS FROM THEIR ERA, WHILE JUST AS MANY OF THE LIVE STREAMERS WILL FAVOR THE HIP HOPPERS OF RECENT YEARS. ANY WAY YOU SLICE THE PIE, ONE THING’S FOR CERTAIN – GREATER HOUSTON HAS BEEN PRODUCING SUPER TALENT FOR DECADES. Clifton Ozen High School opened its doors in Fall of 1997, and is a hip hop generated product of the back to back to back 3A state champion, Beaumont Hebert HS (1980-82). We could have easily included Hebert in this tournament, but this 2001 Ozen team was just too dominant to ignore. The Panthers featured a space eating, dominating 10th grade center named Kendrick Perkins. As a senior, he was selected to the McDonald’s All American game. Shortly after graduating, Perkins bypassed college, and was picked 27th in the 1st round by the Memphis Grizzlies. He would later win an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics (2008). Wheatley’s head coach, Jackie Carr inherited this stacked deck of talent from legendary Collin Briggs (608-55, 13 state titles) who retired after guiding the Wildcats to back to back state championships (1968 and ’69). Ironically, those were the first two years of Integration between the PVIL and UIL governing bodies of Texas high school sports. To this very day, Carr and 49.9% of the Wheatley fans insists his 1973 state champs (instead of the 1970 team) was better. This one was too close to call, and after polling dozens of Fifth Ward historians, we just tossed a silver dollar in the air, and went with the 1970 team. Wheatley featured All American center, Dwight Jones, who once hauled in 51 rebounds during a single game. After high school, Jones starred at University of Houston (1970-73). He was leading scorer / rebounder for the USA in the 1972 Olympics, and selected in the 1st round (9th pick) by the Atlanta Hawks during the 1973 NBA Draft. Dwight”Big D” Jones

THE TIP OFF: Wheatley went to a man defense (something that Ozen had seen only twice all season). The Panthers spread the floor and worked the ball from side to side making at least five passes each trip down the floor before going inside to Perkins. He scored seven of Ozen’s first 10 points, and Wheatley started the game ice cold from the outside. However, the Wildcats were subbing two and three players every dead-ball. Leading 14-9, Perkins had to sit down after picking up his second foul with 1:43 to go in the first period. Wheatley rallied to end the period with a crown pleasing 9-0 run ignited by consecutive dunks by Jones and Lawrence “Spider” Johnson. With just over 4:20 left in the half, Roy Fields 6’6 / 230lbs spelled Jones to guard Perkins. Ozen’s Keena Young was not having his best day when he stole the rock at half court and raced towards the basket. Just as Young went airborne, and cocked the ball back, out of nowhere came “Spider” to block Young’s dunk attempt. The crowd went wild. Now I guess we understand exactly why he has that nickname. Five seconds later, an Allan “Batman” Batro alley-oop gave Wheatley their largest lead (37-29) prompting a much needed time-out by Ozen’s head coach Andre Boutte. Ozen’s backcourt duo Albert Marshall and Michael Thomas were relatively quiet until each nailed consecutive jumpers to bring Ozen within 37-35. Wheatley continued to aggressively sub fresh legs onto the court. Jones, Johnson and Fields re-entered the game with less than 2:00 remaining in the half. Ozen countered by inserting guard Brandon Chappell into the game. He immediately stole the rock and fed Tigee Rideaux who dropped a baseline eight footer, which barely beat the buzzer, to cap an 8-0 run and knot the score at 37. At this point the Ozen fans are going “blue and gold” crazy.
Although we weren’t there to hear the halftime speech from Coach Carr, whatever he said or did sent the Wildcats into another gear. Their press began to take its toll, and generated back to back turnovers which led to consecutive dunks. After an Ozen timeout, the Panthers’ forward Jason Dabney turned over the rock after his attempted entry pass to Perkins was intercepted by a double teaming “Spider”. Another steal led to another Wildcat fast break. Midway through the quarter, the frustrated sophomore Perkins picked up his third and fourth fouls. Once again, he had to take a seat. You could see the disgust in his eyes as he sat and watched Jones pick apart the interior of Ozen’s defense. While Wheatley was opening the lead, Ozen couldn’t buy a rebound. By the end of the period, Wheatley had extended the lead to 68-50. The fourth quarter was basically “Garbage time”. Every time Ozen would put together any type of run, Wheatley countered with a basket or two. With three minutes to go, Perkins fouled out, and finished with a very respectable 23p / 12r/ 4b. Once the final buzzer sounded, Wheatley had coasted to a 94-78 victory. They produced six players in double figures, led by Jones (18p 16r),

These two teams are very compatible, especially considering that neither had a single player who stood over 6’5. Milby’s legendary coach Boyce Honea retired and Jimmy Duffer guided this team to 39 straight wins, despite being his first year as head coach. Midway through the season, Milby won 1st place of the prestigious Academy National Invitational, and steam rolled their way a #4 national ranking (by USA Today). The Buffs were anchored by McDonald’s All American senior Jawaan McClellan. He would later star at University of Arizona before suffering a pair of knee injuries. McClellan is currently an officer with the Houston Police Department. The Marlins were paced by a very talented, well rounded superstar, Sean Gay. He went on to star at Texas Tech, and is one of only four players to ever reach 1,500p, 350r, 325a, and 125s. In 2018, Gay was inducted into the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Fame. THE TIP OFF: The game started with Jawann McClellan and Sean Gay guarding each other. On the first possession, Gatlin found Wendell “Kemo” Nibbs for an acrobatic alley oop to set the tone. While the Marlins were celebrating, Milby’s pint sized point guard, Tramaine Webster dashed up court and found Larry Posey who faced up with a strong left handed lay up while being fouled by Ivan Jones. Gay missed all three of his field goal attempts in the first period. On the other end, McClellan connected on a baseline jumper followed by a three pointer which gave Milby a 17-11 lead to close out the period. In the second quarter, Madison made a key adjustment on the offensive end. Gay (still guarded by McClellan) opted to stand near half court in an effort to allow his teammates to play 4 on 4. Gatlin slid down to the low block and posted Webster for a quick bucket. Gerry McGee stole the inbounds pass 28
and fed Jones for a monster dunk. After a three pointer by Kevin Quinney, ffs held a 4p lead with 5:40 left in the half. The tempo had increased, and the rest of this frame was nip and tuck as both teams went into the half tied at 37. Milby opened in a 1-3-1 defense and Madison wasted no time attacking it. Gay started things off with a long jumper that appeared to be a three pointer, but his toe was one the line. Consecutive missed shot attempts yielded back to back transition baskets for the Marlins which prompted a time out by Coach Duffer and the Buffs, who trailed 45-37. McClellan stopped the surge with a trey ball for the far corner. Reserves John Williams and Tavon Bailey were subbed in for Leon St Rose and Webster. The move paid off quick rewards as Williams punched home an offensive rebound to trim the margin to 45-42. One the next possession, Gay hit another three and back peddled up the court while nodding his head up and down. Right on cue, McClellan responded with a line drive three for which he stared at Gay while nodding his head along with a sly wink. Obviously, the refs let that slide, and the energy in this building was epic. Both Gay and McClellan proceeded to swap big time baskets during each of their team’s next four possessions. Madison held a 62-59 lead entering the final frame. On the first possession, Posey was whistled for his 4th foul, and was subbed in by Chris Jordan, as the Buffs opted to go with a smaller line up in hopes of pushing the tempo. A basket by Cedric Brown pushed the lead to 7. Williams was sent to the line, yet missed both free throws. A missed shot by McGee was put back by Jones, and the Marlins was up 68-59 with 6:12 to go. Milby was getting crushed on the offensive glass. Posey came back in, and converted another low post move. Madison got a trey from the top of the key, by Gatlin to provide their largest lead of the game, 71-61. Posey scored again, and added a free throw to bring the Buffs back within 7. Then, Quinney poked away the inbounds pass which led to a dunk by McClellan to make it 71-66. After a Madison timeout, Gay was placed at the top of the offense, along with Gatlin, Brown, Dexter McDougald and Patrick Crocklin also on the court. During the next three minutes, this unit managed to hit 5 of 6 free throw attempts while only yielding one basket defensively. Madison led 76-68 with less than two minutes remaining. McClellan nailed a much needed three pointer, but Posey (21p 11r) picked up his 5th foul while purposely sending McDougald to the line. He sank both freebies to make it 7871. A missed shot by Webster was rebounded by Gay was which yielded his 10th board to go along with 11 assists and 21 points, a triple double. McClellan (24p 13r, 4a, 3b) added a jumper just before the final buzzer, which provided the final score, 84-76. Madison advances to the semis!

Willowridge Eagles (39-0) Terrance “TJ” Ford 5’10 Daniel Ewing 6’3 Kenny Taylor 6’3 Andre Watson 6’7 Curtis Walker 6’9 The cohesive LaPorte Bulldogs rode a 51 game win streak through the 1987 Class 5A championship, while finishing the season ranked #6 in the nation (by USA Today). There was only (1) player on this team taller than 6’4. Still, they repeatedly found a way to get it done, approximately 51 times in a row. In 2001, WIllowridge won their second straight Class 5A state championship. Shortly afterwards, USA Today listed Willowridge as the nation’s #2 ranked team. This Eagles squad was the first high school in Texas to produce two McDonald’s All Americans (Ford & Ewing) in the same year.

TIP OFF: The house was packed as it normally is whenever Willowridge takes the floor. Also, LaPorte fans were in full effect, mostly clad in a sea of orange. Try imagining the smaller sample size of the Denver Broncos during the “Orange Crush” days. Well, that’s exactly how the Bulldogs side of the gym looked this afternoon. LaPorte opened the game by scoring the first six points. Willowridge head coach Ronnie Courtney ripped off his suit jacket and immediately called a timeout while the Bulldog fans erupted in a synchronizing chant. Donta Yates was subbed in for Kenny Taylor in an effort to give the team another ball handler against Laporte’s press. Both teams ended the first frame tied at 18. In the second quarter, the Eagles went inside to Curtis Walker. He spun on a low post move, and went up to dunk, but was met at the rim by the long arms of William Gooden. However, the ref on the opposite side whistled him for a foul which was met by a chorus of “Boo’s”. On the ensuing possession Gooden had to take a seat after picking up his third foul while attempting to take a charge against Andre Watson. As a result, LaPorte was forced to go into a zone defense, something they rarely played. Coach Courtney inserted Taylor back into the game, along with long forward Isaac “Tree” Rollins.

Back to back three pointers by Taylor put Willowridge ahead 42-34. After a LaPorte timeout, Charles McCovery drilled a wide open trey to pull the Bulldogs within five. The two teams traded baskets, and at the half, Willowridge held on to a 44-39 lead. The third quarter was highlighted by the play of TJ Ford. Paul McCovery (the cousin of Charles) and Jarvis Francious were subbed in for Freddie Harris and Heron. Willowridge continued to shuffle in fresh legs every other dead ball, including Roland Parsons and Ralph Vivarette for Watson and Walker (who had picked up his 4th foul). Charles McCovery and Gooden had the hot hand for the Bulldogs, combining for 17 of the teams 23 third quarter points. Entering the final frame, Willowirdge held a 69-62 lead. Both teams had all five starters back on the court. With just over 6:00 to go, Taylor dropped a trey ball deep from the short corner to yield the largest lead (72-62). LaPorte’s Harris responded with a huge three pointer from the top of the key. Both teams would trade baskets and missed shot attempts over the next couple minutes. With 2:12 remaining, Harris connected with Tony Parker for an alley-oop, followed by consecutive jumpers by McCovery to close within a single possession, 84-81. After a Willowridge time out, junior guard Brandon Chaison was subbed in to provide another ball handler. The Eagles went into a spread offense which eventually forced LaPorte out of their zone defense. As the clock neared the final minute, Ford zipped past Harris and had a wide lane to the basket, but was fouled in the act of shooting. He missed the first free throw, and LaPorte called time out in an effort to ice him. Ford sank the second one, and the Eagles had a four point lead. Willowridge called a time out, and inserted Rollins. The Bulldogs went inside to Gooden. He posted and turned to shoot over Walker, but the shot rimmed out. Rollins grabbed the rebound, and was immediately fouled with :24 to go. He proceeded to knock down both free throws which pretty much iced the game. A desperation three pointer badly missed, and once again Rollins was there for the rebound. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, LaPorte opted not to foul, conceding the 87-81 defeat to Willowirdge. Walker led the way with 18p 11r 4b. Ford dished out 12 assists to go with 8p. Taylor was 5/11 from downtown and finished with 15p. Ewing added 14p while Watson had 10p. For LaPorte, Charles McCovery scored a game high 26p. Gooden added 18, Harris 12 and Parker 11. Willowridge advances into the semi-finals!

The main event of the Quarter Final round attracted a standing room only crowd. An Old School versus New School instant classic. At the end of their seasons, both of these very talented, unbeaten teams were ranked #1 nationwide by National Sports News Service and USA Today. Kashmere’s 46 wins in a single season still stands as a UIL record. More impressively, this team had won consecutive state titles enroute to accumulating 83 straight wins. This dominating squad was led by Karl Godine (28ppg) who is without question - one of the best to ever wear a high school jersey in the state of Texas. The Yates team was very fast, very tough, and best described as “Relentless”. The Lions set the national record for ppg (116.2), most 100 point games in a row (15), and set the record for the highest attendance (16,755) in a single game at the UIL State Tournament. This group was indeed special with seven D1 signees highlighted by Joseph Young (25.6ppg) and “Snap” Peters (25.5ppg). TIP OFF: Kashmere won the tip and Carl Byrd dashed to the rim for a lay-up. Then, Yates responded by scoring on each of their first four possessions, punctuated by Alex Davis’ dunk, and a knuckleball looking three pointer from Darius “PeeWee” Gardner to make the score 9-2. Throughout the rest of the quarter, the Lions maintained control of the tempo, while amassing a 27-20 lead at the end of the first period. 32
Yates opened the frame with a quick basket by Elton Roy. Coach Drew signaled for a timeout. Kashmere quickly came to realize they were not beating this Yates team with ‘speed’. Russell Sublet and Charlie Ross were subbed in. Floor general Marshall Lane got the rock to their ‘bread’ Karl Godine and ‘butter’ Jarvis Williams, the tables began to turn in their favor. Both combined to haul in 4 offensive rebounds and convert all of them into baskets. Meanwhile, Yates simply went cold from the field. Midway through the period, Godine banked in another basket to tie the game. Finally, Brandon “Snap” Peters connected on a 14 footer from the baseline to end the 4:32 minute scoring drought. At that point, the Lions clung onto a 32-30 lead. Lane fed Godine for a thunderous slam dunk. Yates turned over the rock, and Kashmere took the lead 35-32 on a three point play by Williams which gave Davis his 3rd foul. Both teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before Young connected on back to back three pointers to push the Lions back head, 46-43. As he ran back up the court, Young cuffed his right hand over his ear. Right on cue, the fans engaged in chorus “Ouuu-Eye-Third Ward High”. On the other end, Byrd tipped in a missed shot by Lane just before the buzzer to pull the Rams within 46-45. Kashmere adjusted the personnel on their press breaker and focused on attacking the lone defender in the paint, which happened to be Davis. Meanwhile, Yates simply had to play smarter and keep making plays. The third period saw four lead changes and lots of missed shot attempts from both teams. Yates and Kashmere were tied at 65. The 4th quarter yielded plenty of action while the stars on both teams shined like new money. “PeeWee” found Peters streaking from the corner for an alley-oop to put the Lions back ahead. Kashmere countered with a basket by Godine. Yates got a lay-up from Young. Then, Godine knocked down a pull up jumper. Young followed with a deep two pointer. On the other end Godine converted an up and under reverse while getting fouled by Davis (his 4th). He sank the free throw and Kashmere led 79-78 with 5:14 to go. Clyde Santee scored on a left handed lay-up assisted by Marshall Lange to put Yates back up 80-79. Kashmere advanced the rock through the Yates press and Williams had an angle to the rim. Just as he went airborne for the dunk, out of no where came “Snap” Peters with the clean block. Yates was off to the races towards their basket. Roy swished home a three pointer right in front of the Yates bench to put the Lions up 83-79 with 3:47 left. Kashmere called time out, and as both teams walked to their respective benches, the Yates fans joined in that antagonizing chant as described earlier. As expected, Godine got the rock near the free throw line and fed the rock to Williams who had sealed his man on the low block. Williams finished the play through contact, which happened to be the 5th foul on Davis (12p 9r 4b). Williams made the free throw. On the ensuing possessions, Young and Godine proceeded to display their hot hands while scoring some big time buckets. As the clock dwindled under :20, the game was tied at 92. “Snap” Peters dashed his way to the rim, but was fouled while attempting a layup. He missed the first one, and made the second to yield a 93-92 lead for Yates. Kashmere got the ball into the hands of Lane who in turn fed the rock to Godine. He faced the rim just inside the three point line while starting his between the legs dribble. Godine took two hard dribbles towards the paint, then stopped on the dime, elevated and flicked the smooth jumper just over the outstretched hands of Young. The ball swished through the nets as the clock switched from :01 to :00. Ball game! Kashmere pulled off the 94-93 win, and advanced into the semi-finals. Godine finished with a game high 33p and Williams added 24p. Young led Kashmere with 31p while “Snap” Peters contributed 25p in defeat.

This Wheatley team was by far the tallest opponent the Marlins have faced, thus far. However, just as with any other game, Madison’s speed and athleticism often overshadowed any of their disadvantages.

TIP OFF: Wheatley grabbed the opening tip, and immediately Alan “Batman” Batro tossed a half court alley oop lob to Lawrence “Spider” Johnson. The house went wild.
Madison opened the game ice cold from the outside, and didn’t score their first basket until three minutes into the game. If that wasn’t bad enough, leading scorer Sean Gay went down with a sprained ankle after accidentally landing on the foot of a Wheatley player. Unlike most games, Madison couldn’t muster many offensive rebounds. Mainly because Dwight Jones and Roy Fields grabbed anything that looked like it was coming off the rim. On the other end of the court, Wheatley made it top priority to reward their big fellas (offensively) for their defensive hard work. That equated to less opportunities for the Marlins, and more for the Wildcats. As a result, Wheatley built a 28-16 lead after the first quarter. With Gay still in the locker room, Madison realized the best chance they had against this huge Wheatley team was to out hustle, out shoot, and out defend them. Easier said than done. Midway through the frame, Madison made a run, and cut the lead to single digits after Wendell “Kemo” Nibbs sank a left handed shot. After a missed shot by Dwight Jones, Gerry McGee knocked down a baseline jumper to bring the Marlins to within 53-46. Before the ball could barely get through the nets, Dwight Jones grabbed the rock, hopped out of bounds, and heaved a dart to a wide open “Spider” Johnson for an easy bucket. It was just that kind of day for Madison. Moments later Ivan Jones’ post up shot was blocked by Wheatley’s Jones. The Wildcats were back up by eleven. The Madison fans cheered loudly after seeing Gay emerge from the locker room sporting a fresh tape job on his left ankle. However, Coach Benton did not put him into the game since there were only a few seconds remaining before halftime. Tony Gatlin’s last second heave was off the mark, and Wheatley took a commanding 57-46 lead into the break. 34
It was Wheatley’s possession to open the second half, and they went straight inside to Jones. Madison’s zone collapsed on him, and he wisely passed out of the triple team to a very wide open “Spidey” Johnson who swished the jumper through the nets. Coach Benton promptly called a timeout to blast into his team’s lack of rotating within their defense. He proceeded to sub Gay, Dexter McDougald & sophomore post Sidney Rice into the game for Brown, Ivan Jones and McGee. Gay made a couple of plays, and tried to give it all he could, but the limp was a noticeable hindrance especially on defense while trying to keep up with this fast paced tempo. Wheatley’s Jones was on a roll. Everything Madison tossed his was a couple steps too late, or a couple inches too small. Wheatley reached their biggest lead of the game, 76-61 with 3:06 to go in the third quarter. With under a minute left in the frame, Madison surged to within single digits after Gay knocked down back to back three pointers. Then, Gay connected with “Kemo” Nibbs for a rim rattling alley-oop to cap an 8-0 Marlin run. Wheatley’s coach Carr signaled for a time out. For once, it looked like the Wildcats were (at least over the past couple minutes) getting beat at their own game. The Wildcats struggled but managed to hang on to a 82-77 lead while heading into the fourth period. Wheatley’s Jones took a breather to start the final eight minutes. Meanwhile, Madison closed to within three points after a bank shot by McDougald while guarded by Fields. Up came Jones off the Wheatley bench, and towards the scorer’s table. After another Wheatley missed field goal, Gatling caught the long rebound, fed it to Gay (who certainly wasn’t limping anymore) and he was fouled while attempting a reverse lay up. He split the freebies, and the deficit was only two points. Once again, Wheatley went inside to the big fella (Jones). His shot fell a bit short, but Cecil Dutton was right there for the put back. An unforced turnover game possession back to Wheatley. Dutton knocked down a deep jumper to give the Wildcats an 87-81 lead with 5:21 to go. Madison had one more major run left in them, and cut the margin to only two points after back to back jumpers by Gay. But would be as close as they got. Wheatley’s Jones powered in 8 unanswered points, punctuated by a three point play which fouled out Madison’s Jones with :45 left in the game. A couple free throws and desperation attempts later, Wheatley emerged with the 104-95 win. Dwight Jones was simply too much inside while finishing with game highs 34p 18r. “Spider” Johnson added 21, Clarence Johnson 13, “Batman” Batro 12 & Cecil Dutton added 11 in the win. Meanwhile, the Marlins were paced by Gay’s 27p, Gatlin 16, McGee 15, McDougald 12 and Nibbs added 11.

THE TIP OFF: This game was sold out two days in advance. Once game day arrived, the tip-off was delayed 45 minutes after Willowridge’s Curtis Walker yanked on the rim a bit too hard during pre-game warm ups. Daniel Ewing was matched up against Karl Godine. But more interesting was the interesting duel on the blocks between Walker and Jarvis Williams. Madison Lane opened the game guarding TJ Ford. On the opening possession, Lane shook his head acknowledging that it was about to be “on” in Ford’s life. In response, Ford simply gave Lane one of those “yeah-right” smiles he had displayed to pretty much every single opposing point guard who dared to issue such a challenge. The game was fast paced, and it without question primed to be a dandy. With 3:00 left in the opening period Lane scored his first basket – a short jumper over Ford to knot the score at 24. Ewing and Godine engaged in a sequence of trash talking as well. To be quite honest, Ewing got the best of the battle, that is until he was whistled for his second foul just before the period concluded. Godine made both free throws and Kashmere led 31-24 at the end of period one. Isaac “Tree” Rollins and Ralph Vivarette entered the game for Walker and Andre Watson. Kashmere subbed in Carl Belcher for Carl Byrd which yielded the Rams some additional beef on the inside. Moments later, Vivarette and Belcher had to be separated after Vivarette grabbed Belcher’s arm while trying to prevent him from scoring a point blank lay-up. After Belcher hit both free throws, Henry Small ripped “Tree” Rollins and dashed to the rim for a dunk. Kashmere had their biggest lead, 45-34 and the Ram Nation clad in red-white & blue attire went wild. After a much needed time-out, Willowridge managed to collect themselves and finished the half with eight unanswered points, including back to back treys by Kenny Taylor. As Kashmere set up for the last shot, Lane had his pocket picked by Ford. Lane wisely fouled Ford rather than allow him to go in for an uncontested lay-in, or in this case, possibly a slam dunk. As he went to the stripe, Ford glanced over to Lane and gave him a confident wink. As he knocked down both attempts, the Eagle fans seized the opportunity to blast out their infamous free throw chant that had made opponents steaming mad: “Swoosh-Beach-Beach-Beach”, but of course many of the students (as well as a selected few crazed fans) substituted “Beach” for another word that sounds the same. Kashmere held a narrow 45-44 lead to start the third quarter. The world famous K-Ram Stage Band had just performed a hit from the popular 1970’s group GT Express, and this place was rocking. Godine hit two shots from the same spot to put the Rams up five. Walker answered with a bank shot. Lane’s behind the back pass caught Small in stride to the rim for an explosive dunk. TJ penetrated and kicked 36
it back out to Taylor for a wide open three, nothing but net. The rest of the quarter was pretty much the same fast paced tempo that kept the fans and coaches sweating profusely. Again, the margin was five points when Lane knocked down a fade away jumper over reserve Brandon Chaison who had just entered the game. Lane looked over to Willowridge coach Ronnie Courtney and whispered, “Better put him (Ford) back in, coach”. Two possessions later, Ewing was hit with his 4th foul, after attempting to take a charge from Godine. That prompted Coach Courtney to call a time-out and blast the officials for the unbalance of fouls called combined with no one warning Lane for his recent comments directed at him. Of course, Ford subbed back in the game, and so did Watson for the Eagles. By the time the buzzer sounded, Kashmere had put together a 32 point quarter to take a 77-71 lead. Rollins opened the 4th quarter with a baby hook over the extended arms of Williams. Then, Ewing drilled a 15 footer to bring the Eagles within a single possession. However, a put-back by Byrd negated that mini-run. With just under 4:00 left, Kashmere led 93-86. Godine split two defenders, and hit an acrobatic double pump basket. Ford countered with his only three pointer of the game. Lane misfired on the other end, and Taylor grabbed the rebound with a quick outlet to Ford, who in turn, found Ewing ahead of the defense for an easy dunk. Belcher posted on the left black, and was fouled pretty hard by Walker. Belcher took a swing at Walker, and both players were ejected. After sorting out the free throws and everything, Kashmere led by 5 points with only :46 left in the game. Ford split two defenders and dished a no-look pass to Watson for a hard slam. Kashmere, leading by three, went into their stall offense. Willowridge had to foul. Ewing picked up his 5th foul which sent Small to the line, shooting a one-plus-one situation. The clock stood still at :13. Willowridge called a time-out to “ice” Small, and it worked. The ball hit the back of the rim, Rollins got the rebound and flipped the outlet to Ford. He darted up the court and Lane (instead of commonly fouling him) grabbed Ford’s jersey and the momentum of the contact caused Ford to awkwardly fall into the scorer’s table. Lane was whistled for a flagrant foul which yielded two shots and the ball. Kashmere’s Coach Weldon Drew went berserk. A brief scuffle broke out and two fans had to be escorted out of the gym. Once order was restored on the court, WIllowridge received two free throws, and the possession. Trailing 95-92 with only :07 left, Ford calmly sank the first one. Right on cue, it sounded like every WIllowridge fan in the building joined in yelling that antagonizing chant. Two more fans were escorted out of the gym, including two ladies wearing blue wigs and replica ref shirts. Kashmere called a time out and returned the favor by “icing” Ford. Guess what? It worked, too. The rebound was grabbed by Williams who was quickly fouled by Taylor. Only one second went off the clock. Willowridge called their last time out. Williams lined up and short rimmed the front end of the one-plusone. Parsons hauled in the rebound, and gave it to Ford. Five….. Four…. As he dribbled up the court, Watson set a sideline pick to free up Taylor. Ford passed him a one handed strike. Three…Two… Taylor caught and stepped right into the shot from the volleyball line. One…. (you can make the buzzer sound with your mouth right now). You could hear heartbeats thumping throughout the gym. The horn sounded just as the ball ricocheted from inside the white square, into the rim, and through the nets to give Willowridge the 96-95 thrilling victory over previously unbeaten Kashmere. Wow! What a game. Ewing led the Eagles with 23 points, followed by Taylor 21, Walker 14p 11r, Rollins 13p 10r, Ford 12p 11a. The Rams were paced by Godine’s 29p. Lane and Small had 15 apiece while Williams and Belcher added 14 each. Willowridge advances to the championship to face Wheatley! 37

Two teams with identical undefeated records from two different eras. This game was a classic showdown where the “Old School” meets “The New”. The afro meets retro. The Jackson 5 meets Jagged Edge. Wheatley sported a set of custom made canvas Chuck Taylors while Willowridge wore leather Kobe’s (adidas version). The picture has been painted for your reading pleasure, and the winner of this game would definitely have bragging rights to hold their right index finger upright in the most convincing fashion. Sit back, relax, and put aside as much as your biases as possible while we let you know exactly how it went down. There was so much hype surrounding this game, it was moved to the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, yes the Astrodome, baby. Legend has it: the Dome rental was paid in full (cash) by a pair of guys affectionately known as “Candy” and “Pig”. These two individuals, along with local businessman Skipper Lee Frazier got together and promoted the event which pre-sold a record 19,000 of the 25,000 seats during the first three days. A pair of popular photographers, Herbert Provost and Lloyd Wells conducted a special photo shoot with the teams while promoting the game to the masses. Julius Carter and the ‘Forward Times’ newspaper penned a front cover spread about the game. Legendary print king Pha Green printed posters and had them stapled on nearly every telephone pole located at red light intersections throughout Houston’s Historic 5th Ward. Popular Houston radio sports personality Mickey Hobbs provided the play-by-play alongside Rick Godfrey. Godfrey (known as the Golden Voice) also crooned “Lift Every Voice and Sing” during the opening ceremonies. Press row was lined with many of Houston’s urban pioneers of media. Charles Porter Jr was there. Bud Johnson was present, and so was George McElroy. King Arthur Prayther was also in the house - seated next to Ralph Cooper and Jerry Woodley. THE TIP OFF: Willowridge’s high flying forward, Andre Watson beat Dwight “Big D” Jones to the tip, and the ball went right into the hands of TJ Ford. Wheatley opened in a “man” defense. Willowridge ran Kenny Taylor from one side of the court, down the baseline, to the other side. Watson set a mean pick which freed Taylor on the right side. Ford’s pass met him in the corner, as he caught, turned and fired away. Boom! 39
Wheatley had advanced the rock to half court before Willowridge could form their press. Clarence Johnson passed the rock to Lawrence “Spider” Johnson on the wing. He rushed the shot, which hit the front iron, and missed badly. The rebound was snagged by Isaac “Tree” Rollins (who started in place of Curtis Walker – a mild punishment for getting ejected in the previous game). “Tree” Rollins gave the ball to Ford who darted past three defenders, and whipped the rock to Taylor. He squared up and launched another long ball. Boom again! The crowd was active early as Willowridge jumped to a 6-0 lead only 15 seconds into the game. Both teams went up and down the court as though a 24 shot clock was in full effect. The Eagles were hitting on all cylinders – especially from the outside where they nailed 5 treys in an impressive 33 point first quarter. On the flipside, Wheatley controlled the glass (including 6 offensive rebounds) which consequently gave them additional opportunities to score. Wheatley trailed 33-28 after this period. The second quarter’s pace didn’t quite duplicate the bucket for bucket exchange of the opening period. After both teams failed to effectively press the other, Wheatley backed their press into a half court set. Meanwhile, Willowridge showed “Man” but trapped wherever the dribble was picked up (once the ball crossed mid court). After a quick turnover, Wheatley’s head coach Jackie Carr signaled for a time out, and diagrammed a remedy. Walker was subbed into the game for Willowridge. A couple minutes later, Willowridge reached their largest lead of the game (44-36) on a baseline dunk by Walker. With 2:00 left in the half, Ford picked up his 3rd foul, but Head Coach Ronnie Courtney gambled by leaving him on the court. Back to back steals by Allan “Batman” Batro, combined with an ill-advised Willowridge field goal attempt, resulted in a 12-2 Wheatley run which gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game, 48-46. After a Willowridge time out, the bleeding didn’t stop. “Big D” Jones got the ball in the post and as time expired, he was fouled by “Tree” Rollins while knocking down a running hook shot. The Wheatley fans stood on their feet and expressed their joy. “Big D” Jones converted both free throws to give the Wildcats a 51-46 advantage at the half. In the third quarter, both teams came out with fire in their bellies. Wheatley’s Roy Fields went baseline and was met at the rim by Watson (who got both hands on the ball) for the blocked dunk attempt. Ford came down and found Taylor standing on one of his sweet spots. As he squared up, he saw “Spider” Johnson coming in for a clean block. Taylor, then forwarded the rock to Ewing in the short corner. He drilled a three pointer that went right through the nets with perfect rotation. The Wildcats inbounded the rock to Clarence Johnson who made the mistake of picking up his dribble just as he crossed half court. Within a blink of an eye, both Ford and Taylor had trapped Johnson which resulted in a five second violation. On the next possession, Donta Yates high arched an 8-footer which was rebounded by Roland Parsons for a put back slam. Wheatley countered with back to back jumpers by Cecil Dutton. Willowridge subbed in Walker for Yates, and went right inside to him. Walker somewhat forced a 15 footer which was hauled in by “Big D” Jones for his 10th rebound. Over the final three minutes, Wheatley outscored Willowridge 15-11 to take a 70-62 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The lead reached double digits after Dutton drilled another jumper. With 5:12 remaining, Ford hit his first field goal of the second half. Jones countered by splitting a pair of free throws and Wheatley held onto a 76-67 cushion with 4:45 left. Ewing drove to the rack and scooped in a reverse lay up. Afterwards, the Eagles went back into their full court press which caught the Wildcats off guard. “Spider” Johnson was ripped by Ewing. Then, Ford knocked down a 12 foot jumper, and Wheatley countered with a bank shot by Willie Thornton. Jones picked up his 4th foul while attempting to block a jump 40
hook by Watson. He missed both free throws, and Fields grabbed the rebound. Only 2:15 remained, and Wheatley held a seven point lead. “Spider” Johnson had the rock on the left side. Jones was guarded by Walker on the block. Fields set a pick for Dutton who cut towards the basket. “Spider” Johnson hit him right in the hands with a pass. However, just as Dutton attempted to take one dribble in effort to gain momentum for a possible dunk, the defensive minded Ford had reached in and swiped the ball away. While in transition, Ford neared the rim, and Watson trailed from the right side. Ewing was on the left. Wheatley’s “Batman” Batro braced himself to take a charge in front of the basket. Ford motioned towards the right, and “Batman” Batro bit to defend what he thought would be a pass to Ewing. Then with his right hand, Ford took the ball behind his back, and into the hands of an airborne Watson for a crowd erupting slam dunk. As the Eagles were high-fiving, “Spider” Johnson fired the inbounds pass down the court to Fields to fed “Big D” Jones for a strong basket on the right post. Wheatley’s Coach Carr signaled for a time out, and the Wildcat Stage Band grooved the crowd to their rendition of James Brown’s hit song “Call Me Super Bad”. Willowridge’s Taylor missed a three from the top of the key. Jones hauled in the rebound, and immediately Watson fouled to stop the clock. “Big D” Jones sank one of the two attempts to extend the margin to 82-74 with only :50 on the clock. Another missed trey by Taylor produced a long rebound which went right into the hands of Ewing. He drove towards the basket and scored on a short bank shot. Once again, the Eagles had to foul to preserve the precious time. Fields went to the line, and missed the front end of the one plus one opportunity. Walker tipped the ball out to Ewing. He fired the rock to Ford near mid court, who dribbled towards the goal, and went up to shoot the 8 footer. Then, he managed to shift his body to flip a pass which caught the trailing Walker in stride for a lay-in which rolled around the rim before going in. Count the basket, and more importantly was the 5th foul on “Big D” Jones. Walker converted the three point play, and the score was now 82-79. Wheatley called their final time out. Coach Carr whipped out a stick of chalk and began scribbling on the gym floor, right in front of the bench. Thirty two seconds remained, and all Wheatley had to do was execute three things that were easier said than done – 1. Inbound the Ball 2. Protect the ball 3. Make free throws. With “Big D” Jones on the bench as a result of fouling out, the momentum had swung in Willowridge’s favor. This was definitely crunch time for Wheatley. On the inbounds play, Willowridge aggressively tried to deny the pass. However, Fields barely escaped a five second count, and delivered the ball to “Spider” Johnson, the team’s best free throw shooter. Walker immediately fouled him, and since it was Willowridge’s 10th team foul, that meant every trip to the free throw line would yield a pair of attempts for Wheatley. “Spider” Johnson calmly made both free throws to give the Wildcats a five point lead. Wheatley pulled their press back to half court, and had “Batman” Batro playing the role of a free safety towards Taylor. Ewing took the open shot, but it rimmed out. Walker managed to tip the ball over to Taylor who fired up an 18 foot jumper for two. Immediately, Ford used Willowridge’s final timeout. With :12 left, they trailed by three points. Fields got the ball into “Batman” Batro who was quickly fouled. Thousands of Eagles fans stomped the bleachers, and made as much noise as they could to distract the shooter. Still, that didn’t faze “Batman” Batro one bit as he knocked down the first one. In unison, a group of Wheatley students and fans mimicked the Eagle fans’ antagonizing chant, “Whoosh Beach, Beach, Beach”. On cue, the police officers who were working the event assumed their positions to make their presence felt. He swished home the second freebie, and Willowridge’s snowball’s chance of winning this game had just melted. All five Wheatley players got out of the way as Ford went in for an uncontested layup. Instead of inbounding the ball, Wheatley purposely let the clock run out. Final score: Wheatley 86 Willowridge 83. 41
Jones was named MVP after scoring 25p to go with 16r. “Batman” Batro contributed 17, “Spider” Johnson scored 14, Fields 13 & Dutton added 12. Willowridge was paced by Ewing with 21p, Taylor had 16, Walker 14p 9r, Watson 13, and Ford 9p 12a.

College Park’s 2-year district champion streak came to an end last season, but the Cavaliers are ready to reclaim the top spot once again this season. Last year the Cavs went 28-8 (13-3) and advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs. They bring back their leading scorer and rebounder from last season, 6’5 Sr. F Martez James who averaged 12.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game is looking to have a big senior campaign. As of November 1st, James held several D3 offers on the table. The Cavs also add Jr. G 6’3 district transfer Ian Inman who was at The Woodlands (their arch rival) last season. Plus return 6’1 Jr. startTrae Lewis ing PG Aiden Buckmon who led the team in assists last season and was second in scoring. Grand Oaks won their first-ever district title (14-2) in the 7th year of its school existence and have made it to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. They graduated a lot of players from last year’s 29-10 squad, but the player to watch this season for the Grizzlies is rising Jr. G Trae Lewis a 6’0 scoring machine. Willis will be a tough team in the district. They were young last season and finished 5th in district play going 7-9. The Wildkats will be hungry to clinch a playoff spot this upcoming season led by junior guard Tyshon Nixon who led Gary Lewis the team in scoring last year 11.4 points per game, and the duo of sophomore guards Shawndrick “SJ” Young 6’4 9.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, and Amare Hatchett 5’10 - 9.2 points per game. Conroe is always a team to watch for in this district. Gary Lewis a 6’4 220 lbs Sr. F. That will be the focal point for the Tigers. The Woodlands will rely on 5’10 Sr. G Joseph Hauser and 6’0 Sr. G Lucas Hwang to be the catalyst to propel them in the district race. Other players to be on the lookout for include athletic Jeremy Roman 6’5 Sr. F [New Caney HS] who was one of the top performers at the UC Exposure Camp in October, Jeremy Roman and Christian Harris 5’10 So. G [Cleveland HS]
6A Region II - District 14
Westfield and Coach Goffney look to get back on top of the district this season. They will have two other opponents to contend with. The Mustangs will look to 6’8 Jr. PF Jeremiah Cooper to man the interior on both ends of the floor and 6’0 Sr. PG DeBrion Broomfield to be the vocal leader and the machine, DeBrion Broomfield Jordan Francis while the cool calm and collected 6’0 Jr. G Jordan Francis will play a key role this season. They also added district transfer 6’6 Sr. W Davion McDaniel (from Aldine HS). Nimitz won’t be a walk in the park, and the Cougars look to win the district this season. With back-to-back playoff appearances and Head Coach

Tigee Rideaux entering his 3rd year at the helm with a 42-28 record (19-9) in district play. Look for two seniors to be the catalyst for the squad. 6’1 Sr. PG Eric Woods averaged 13.1 points per game last season and 6’3 Sr. G Dominic Samuels averaged 9.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. You can also expect good contributions from 6’5 Jr F Bruce Thurston, 6’4 Jr. F Ke’Lyn Washom, and 6’1 So. Malachai Augustus. Aldine Davis went 21-12 (11-3) last season and was crowned district champions. They made it to the second round of the playoffs under Coach Chris Packer. Coach Packer will lean heavily on 6’6 Sr. F Deadric Fikes who holds an NCAA D2 offer to have a huge senior season, along with 6’3 Sr. G Johnathan Gray to be a key piece. Spring missed out on the playoffs last season but looks to get back in this season. The Lions and Coach Glass will look to utilize 6’2 Sr. G Bryce Archie who averaged 6.9 points per game last year, and Jr. Tadarius Wade who averaged 9.5 points per game to get them back to the playoffs this upcoming season. Aldine will be a scrappy bunch. Although they lost their top 4 scorers from last season, three of whom have transferred out. They will still look to play spoiler in a couple of games in district play this year. The Mustangs will look to 6’3 Jr. G Lorenzo Robinson and 6’1 Jr. G Jameson Kegler. Eisenhower will get good play from Sr. PG Clifton Jones. Dekaney will lean heavily on 6’5 Sr. W Xavier Phipps.

6A Region II - District 15
Klein Oak was one of the area’s biggest surprises as they made a huge run to the Region II Championship game. Last season the Panthers went 24-13 (10-4). They will feature 6’6 Sr. G Bryson Holmes and add an in district transfer in 6’2 Jr. G Brennan Webb (from Klein HS). This duo will look to wreak havoc in district play this year. Klein Collins went 25-10 (12-2) winning the district last season. This season they look to return to the playoffs as one of the top four teams in the district and at the top of it. They will lean heavily on the senior duo of 6’2 SG Aaron Perez and 5’9 PG Greg Jackson. Perez averaged 12.1 points and 2.1 assists per game, while Jackson averaged 9 points, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Klein Cain just missed out on the playoffs last season by finishing 5th in the district. This team has a lot of hype surrounding them as they feature a consensus Top 75 player in the country 6’8 Jr. PF John Clark. The Hurricanes are favored to make it into that top four in district. They will also get key contributions from 5’11 Sr. PG Koye Rondeno, 6’6 Sr.

F Nick Delgado, and 6’3 Sr. G Braden Fobbs. Meanwhile, Tomball Memorial has been to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. They lose out on a heavy senior core from last season, but still have high hopes of making it back with 6’6 Sr. SF Luke Reder who has committed to play collegiate basketball at Missouri Western State, an NCAA D2 university in (St. Joseph, MO). Klein and Head Coach Glen Arnold continue on the plus .500 streak. They look to get back to the playoffs once again after a 18-14 (9-5) season. The Bearkats will look to 6’5 Sr. G Caleb Evans to lead them this season with help from 6’6 Sr. F Nicholas Ivins. Klein Forest focal players on the season will be 6’3 Sr. G Larry Holmes Jr. and 5’10 Sr. G Jesaiah McDaniels. Tomball will look to 6’6 Sr. F Manny Ruiz as their leader. Waller will use 6’4 Sr. F Cody LeBlanc to lead the way.

After losing JoJo Tugler to graduation, Cypress Falls and Head Coach Richard Flores have another D1 inside presence 6’8 Sr. PF Brayden Young who is committed to Loyola University Chicago (NCAA D1). They also have 3 year varsity letter-man 6’5 Sr. G Daylon Porter, and a 6’5 Sr. transfer Julian Greer (from Aldine HS) to add to the fire power. Last season the Eagles went 28-8 (12-2) as they made it back to the Regional playoff round. Cypress Ranch went 20-13 (8-6) and fell in the first round of the playoffs. This young Mustang team returns 3 starters, plus their 6th man. They will be led by this dynamic quad of talent 6’4 Sr. G Chris Tippins, 5’10 Jr. PG Isaac Saavedra, 6’2 So. G Jacob Williford & 6’4 So. SG Josh Goodwiin who (as a freshman) averaged 10.4 points and 2.5 assists per game. Cypress Springs went 23-12 (9-5) and opened quite a few eyes last season as they made it to the third round of the playoffs. They feature one of the area’s most improved players 6’6 Sr. SF Stoney Hadnot who signed with South Dakota State, an NCAA D1 school. They also added a very talented 6’6 So. F Landon Veal (transferred from Cy-Park HS). Langham Creek went 22-12 (10-4) last season. They graduated some key pieces, but feature 6’6 Jr. SG Tyrus Rathan-Mayes who has been drawing a lot of collegiate attention. The Lobo’s will also use Sr. G Braylon Scott as a key player. Bridgeland will be a team NOT to overlook, especially in district play. The Bears have 6’3 So. G Lyris Robinson who holds a pair of D1 offers as the anchor. They will also receive fire power from 6’4 Sr. G Jace Gooley, 6’6 So. F Nigel Chatman, and 6’1 Sr. G Alexander Osborne. Over at Cypress Park, the Tigers will be scrappy on the defensive side of the ball, and may end up playing the spoiler role in district. They have an incoming freshman who will likely run the show in 6’0 PG Royce Shelton. They also feature 6’0 Sr. Cameron Wine. Cypress Woods missed the playoffs by one game last season. Although the Wildcats lost their interior presence, they return a 2025 trio of 6’2 Jr. G Brandon Brown, 5’6 Jr. PG Kyler Singletary, and 6’0 Jr. G Chase Anderson. You can expect for 6’5 Sr. PF Christopher Gitonga to play a bigger role this season as well. Cypress Lakes has a trio as well that will be a tough draw also. They feature 6’7 Sr. PF Adrian Johnson, 6’3 Sr. G Allen Paul, and a 6’4 So. W Daniel Mitchell.

Cy-Fair went 17-15 (11-3) last season as they made the playoffs with an early exit in the firstround. The Bobcats are not to be overlooked, and just may be the favorite to win district this season. They feature three key pieces that will be beneficial to their success this season. 5’11 Sr. G Arlind Konjuhi, 6’10 Sr. C Nolan Aigberadion, and 6’3 Jr. G Kendarius Johnson. This trio along with their scrappy guard play will make them a tough out in district this season. Cypress Creek has a very good chance of bringing home the district crown, after making the Arlind Konjuhi playoffs for 7 straight seasons. Last year they finished 29-8 (12-2) and fell in the 3rd-round of the playoffs. The 6’0 Jr. G Ke’Bari Lewis is back healthy and seeks to put on a show after missing all last season. They bring back 1st Team All District rebounder 6’5 Sr. F Taurus Baugh. Plus, expect solid contributions from 5’10 So. PG Tywan Collins. a 6’0 G (from Aldine Davis HS). Cypress Ridge is looking to make a big splash in district play this season and get back in the playoff mix. The Rams will be led by 5’10 Sr. PG Sir William McDuffie who has been a three year varsity letterman. Three-point threat in 5’11 Sr. SG Jake Holland. They also add in two transfers that will be very impactful out the gate in 6’4 Sr. F Jordan Johnson and 6’0 Sr. G Sir William McDuffie Kevin Range Jr. Meanwhile, Jersey Village will rely heavily on the leadership of 6’3 Sr. G Gavin Davis. He was the 3rd leading scorer in district last season - 17.4 points per game. It will be interesting to see what else the Falcons bring to the table this season, as they missed the playoffs by only two games last year. Spring Branch Memorial always finds themselves in the playoff mix. They have a very rowdy crowd which makes them a serious problem at home. The Mustangs will rely on 6’3 So. G Jack Floyd to be their catalyst this year. Stratford will feature 6’2 So. G Shai Francis who is very athletic. Spring Woods will feature Joseph Salazar III. Northbrook will feature Elliot Young. Bellaire went 19-8 (11-1) last year and went to the second-round of the playoffs. Last season the Cardinals took a slight blow with a season ending injury with one of their key players. This year the Cardinals are looking to make a state run with national touted prospect 6’5 Jr. SF Shelton Henderson who was invited to USA Youth Basketball Mini Camp back in October. They will also receive great contributions from 6’6 Jr. PF Anthony “LJ” Andrews, and 6’3 Jr. G Kholman Dutton will be back in the mix this year once fully recovered. They also will feature incoming 5’10 Fr. Jadarian “JD” Williams. Lamar went 18-11 (8-4) but was clipped in the first round of the playoffs. The Texans will look to 6’3 Sr. G Kye Smith to be the leader this year. Last season he averaged 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Heights finished second in district last season and also went to the second-round of the playoffs as they finished 18-13 (9-3). The Bulldogs will look to 5’9 So. PG Davion Jackson to be the leader this year. He started Varsity as a freshman last season and averaged 5.8 points per game. They will also get contributions from 6’1 Sr. G Lamont Robbins, 6’4 Jr. PF Jordan Clavelle, and 6’3 So. W Kaden Cole. Westbury missed out on the playoffs last season by a coin flip. The Huskies look to turn that around this season and finish top 4 in the district to get back into the playoffs. The Huskies featured prospect will be 6’5 Jr. W Bryan Bernardez who averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season. Westside went 16-16 (6-6) last season and was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. They feature 6’3 Sr. Jermiah Chatman . Houston Math, Science, and Technology (formerly known as Sam Houston HS) went 2-22 (0-12) and Chavez went 10-22 (2-10) and will lean on 6’1 Sr. G Ever Tista.

Seven Lakes went 34-5 (16-0) and made it to regionals last season. They are looking to do even better this year.. The Spartans leader is 6’4 Sr. PG Anthony Bates Jr. (signed w/ Louisiana Tech) who is back-to-back district MVP, and has been a varsity starter since his freshman season. This includes a record of 80-17 (35-5) and two district championships with Bates on the court. They also have a nationally touted 6’4 So. CG Nasir Price, a very talented guard who is worth the price of admission. Hagan Knight 6’0 Sr. PG is the team’s X FacEver Tista tor. Seven Lakes has a few more notable prospects such as 6’3 Sr. SG Bret Norton , 6’2 Jr. Tillman Jaramillo, 6’4 So. G Sean Williams, and 6’4 Fr. F Isaiah Santos. Katy Jordan making the move from 5A to 6A was no problem for the Warriors as they also made it to regionals last season after posting a 28-9 (12-4) record. They did lose a pair of intricate pieces but return these three starters from last season. 6’0 Jr. PG Elijah Black has been on statement mode this Fall, 6’5 Jr. PF Jude Oluokun, and 5’9 Jr. PG Jaden Holt. They will also get production from 6’3 Jr. G Rayan Fadika, while the lone 12th grader on this roster is 5’7 Sr. PG Trae Gage. Cinco Ranch went 20-13 (9-7) and missed out on the playoffs last season. The CouTrae Gage gars will have an exciting pair of brothers who will be expected to guide them into postseason territory. They feature 6’1 Jr. PG Prince Jones-Bynum who was a varsity starter last season, and 5’10 Fr. PG Dylan Jones-Bynum who (during Fall Ball) looked like a varsity veteran. Tompkins went 22-14 (11-5) last season making it to the playoffs after attempting the most three-pointers of any team in Texas. They will miss the services of Luke Coughran 6’3 Sr. SG who transferred to Dream City Christian Academy in Arizona. The Falcons will look to lean on these two players on the season in 6’3 Jr. G Scottie Guillory and 6’1 Sr. SG Dylan Jones-Bynum Colton Collins to get things done. Mayde Creek has made a coaching change and brings over Spring Woods Joe Gibson to run the show after Anthony Fobb transitioned to the collegiate coaching ranks. The Rams went 13-16 (4-12) on the season. They will feature a trio of players in 6’5 Jr. SG Jamal Chretien II who is the returning leading scorer at 22.6 points per game, 6’5 So. G Christian Gibson (the talented son of the head coach) who averaged 16.8 points per game last season at Spring Woods HS, and 6’5 Sr. PF Christian Joe. Katy Tigers went 13-20 (2-14) on the season last year. They will feature these two prospects to lead the way for them this season. 6’4 So. F Brady Willis and 6’6 So. PF Jayden Stewart will look Scottie Guillory to play spoiler this season as they look to gain a spot in the top four in district. Katy Paetow went 13-18 (8-8) last season and will lean heavily on 6’4 Sr. SF Ade Onaleye and 6’1 Sr. G Princeton Layton who transferred over from Katy Taylor. Speaking of Katy Taylor, they went 24-12 Christian Gibson (11-5) last season, and made it to the first round of the playoffs. The Mustangs will rely on 6’1 Jr. PG Nathan Nguyen. Morton Ranch went 7-26 (0-16) and will rely on 6’1 Sr. G Corey Johnson.

Fort Bend Hightower Hurricanes made the move from the 5A ranks with no problem, and walked away as district champs last season going 25-9 (14-2) with a second round playoff berth. They return reigning district MVP - 6’4 Sr. W Milton Rice, along with 5’10 Jr. PG Jerrick Sasser. They also add in two new transfers 6’1 Jr. G Jaden Williams (Barbers Hill) and 5’10 Jr. G Chase Garcia (Shadow Creek) who both played varsity at their former schools. Fort Bend Clements went 20-9 (11-5) and fell in the first round of the playoffs. The Rangers will feature an experienced 6’4 Sr. G Divine Ugochukwu who holds multiple NCAA D1 offers and last season led the district with 16.4 points and 5.1 assists per game. They also have one of the area’s tallest players 7’0 Sr. C Joshua Clark who is much improved, and could play his way into a college scholarship. Also, keep an eye on 5’11 Sr. G Bryce Matthews 6.3 points per game, 6’5 So. G Aziz Olajuwon 6.7 points per game, and newcomer 6’3 Fr. SG Keshav Vijaykumar moved in from San Antonio. Fort Bend Travis went 21-11 (9-7) and missed the playoffs, is a testament as to how tough this district is right now. The key piece that makes this Travis machine run will be competitive playmaker 6’0 Sr. PG Justin Mack who is committed to Augustana University (NCAA D2) in South Dakota. They also will feature 6’2 Jr. G Kameron Newsome and 6’4 Jr. W Timi Ibikunle. Fort Bend Elkins is always ready to compete with Head Coach Albert Thomas at the helm. Last season the Knights went 19-11 (11-5) and made it to the playoffs. They will be missing lengthy 6’5 Sr. SF Jae’Coby Osborne who transferred to Bella Vista (AZ). The Knights still bring back some key varsity players in 6’3 Sr. G Charley Reado 6.6 points per game, 5’10 Sr. G Justin Mitchell 5.7 points and 3.0 assists per game, and 5’11 Sr. G Todd Woods 6.4 points and 2.9 assists per game. Siblings 6’2 Sr. Reid Daniel and 6’0 Sr. Ryan Daniel provides interchangeable depth to this roster. Also be on the watch for this 6’7 Sr. F Bryant Ajiero. Fort Bend Bush went 16-13 (11-5) as they played in the first round of the playoffs last season. The Broncos seek to be back in the playoff hunt this season as they will feature 6’4 Jr. G Legborsi Mato, 6’5 So. W Daryus Tasby, and 6’6 Sr. F TJ Mayes. They will also have 6’4 Fr. G Sheldon Cobbin who will make some noise. Fort Bend Ridge Point went 15-15 (6-10) last season. The Panthers look to beat that door down as they make a push for a playoff spot this season. They will be led by 6’4 Jr. G Dorian Hayes who led the team last year with 14.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game average on the season. You can also expect key contributions from these two 6’2 Jr. G Kijuan Arnold, and 6’7 Jr. PF Logan Menfee this season as well. George Ranch went 12-22 (1-15) last season. Their anchor guy is one of the best interior defenders in the area in 6’7 Sr. PF Chidiebube Chiakwelu. They will also use 6’0 Sr. G Alvin Breaux and 6’5 Sr. F Gavin Conley. Fort Bend Dulles went 12-21 (4-12) last season. They will lean on Sr. F Taylen Ford. Fort Bend Austin went 16-18 (5-11) they will lean on Sr. G Jonah Rebueno.

Atascocita with head coach David Martinez has been a mainstay within the top of district play. They look to be crowned district champions this year. Last season the Eagles went 2312 (9-5) and made it to the second-round of the playoffs. The Eagles will feature 6’4 Sr. G Jerrell Barron Jr. who is committed to Brown University (NCAA D1) lets you know what type of academics this young man has mastered along with his game. Also watch for 6’4 Jr. G Jaylen Fenner, 6’1 So. G Jachia Cantave, and 6’3 Sr. G Avion Jackson who was the leading scorer last Avion Jackson season before suffering an early season ending injury. Beaumont United had advanced to the UIL state championship weekend 3 years in a row. Can this year’s squad make the push to be crowned district champions and get back to San Antonio? The Wolves went 36-2 (140) last season. This year they will feature 6’2 Sr. PG Kayde Dotson who is signed with The University of New Mexico (NCAA D1) and averaged 11.9 points and 2.4 assists per game, and 6’6 Sr. SF Clarence Payia a D1 prospect who averaged 9.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game last season. Summer Creek went 27-9 (10-4) and made it to the second round of the Jordan Brown playoffs where they fell in a very close overtime thriller. This year they are very deep, and will be led by 6’4 Sr. G Cameron Patterson who is inked with San Jose State (NCAA D1) and a very talented versatile 6’4 Jr. G Bryson Wheatfall. Other players to watch for will be 6’1 Sr. PG Jordan Brown, 6’2 Jr. SG Jacob Vannostrand, 6’3 Jr. G Damond Matthews, 5’10 So. G Reginald Rideaux, and newcomer 5’9 Fr. PG Joshua Coleman (the coach’s son) as they look to take the district crown. Beaumont West Brook went 27-11 (9-5) and made it to the third round of the playoffs where they had their fourth meeting with cross town rival United. The Bruins are led by 6’4 Sr. PG Ashton Simmons who is signed with Texas Christian UniversiDamond Matthews ty (NCAA D1). He led the team in scoring last season with a 17.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2 steals per game averages. West Brook will also get great contributions from 6’3 So. PG Elijah Garrett averaged 8.7 points per game, 6’3 Jr. G Terry Satcher, and two sport star 6’6 Sr. F Jaylin Jones who is committed to Purdue University on a football scholarship. They will also have 6’5 Jr. F Derrick Daigle joining and contributing to the team once football season ends. C.E. King went 10-19 (7-7) last season, and hired Head Coach Damien Mobley (from Dallas Madison HS) to lead the way. The Panthers will lean heavily on 6’8 Sr. PF Logan Alexander and their two new newcomers. 6’6 Jr. SF Christian Thomas who comes from Terry Satcher Maryland where he was named ‘Baltimore Sun’ player of the week multiple times. Another key addition is 5’10 Sr. PG J’Mar Franklin from Houston St. Thomas Catholic HS where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game and helped to lead them to a 26-3 record last season. North Shore went 14-18 (5-9) on last season. The Mustangs will lean heavily on this trio. 6’2 Sr. G Terrance TJ Alford who averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last season, 6’2 Sr. G Deandre Jones who averaged 9.8 points and 1.5 steals per game, and 5’8 Sr. PG Kerrick Rideau. Kingwood went 6-26 (1-13) last season. During the summer, the Mustangs committed to improving chemistry while playing and having sucKerrick Rideau cess in a few grassroots events. Kingwood will rely heavily on a trio of 11th graders 6’6 Jr. F Dylan Brewer, 6’4 Jr. F MJ Redic & 6’0 Jr. G Ty Bayless. Rounding up 21-6A is Humble who went 7-26 (1-13). One player to keep an eye on will be 6’1 Sr. G Bryce Deason.

South Houston went 23-9 (9-3) and won this district last season. The Trojans and Head Coach Frank Watson will be a tough draw this year. They feature a few prospects to look out for including 6’0 Jr. PG Jordan Buckner who averaged 11.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2 steals per game. 5’11 Sr. G Josh Larry who averaged 11.6 points per game, 6’4 Sr. F Josiah Ware averaged 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, and 6’0 Sr. G Kameron Webb who averaged 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Be on the watch for newcomer 6’5 Fr. F XaviJosh Larry er Muhammed. Pasadena Memorial went 23-12 (9-3) on the season last year making it to the playoffs. The Mavericks will lean heavily on these two seniors this season: nationally touted 6’10 Sr. PF Robert Miller III who is signed with Louisiana State University (LSU). Miller averaged 19.7 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 5.4 blocks per game last season. 5’10 Sr. PG Gary Brown III who averaged 13.4 points and 2.9 assists per game, and the X-Factor will be 6’2 Jr. G Chris Jones Jr.. The Mavs will get better once 6’4 Jr. F LJ Delgado & 5’10 So. G Logan Johnson slides over from the football field. Dobie went 17-16 (7-5) last season and fell in the first round of Gary Brown III the playoffs. The Longhorns have a new head coach at the helm Timir Patel. The Longhorns will lean heavily on 6’2 Sr. G Dylan Jackson. They should also get good contributions from 5’10 Sr. G Waymond Hayes, 6’8 Sr. F Kalaeb Helm, and 6’1 Sr. G Julio Cisneros. Deer Park went 24-10 (9-3) and made it into the playoffs after taking the second seed in district. The Deers will utilize 6’6 Sr. F Joshua Anderson, 6’2 Jr. G Isaiah Aguirre, and 6’3 Sr. G King Phillips. Pasadena went 27-7 (6-6) last season and missed the postseason by one game. The Eagles will lean on 6’6 Sr. PF Gustavo Escamilla. Sam Rayburn went 4-29 (0-12) last season. Their focal player will be 6’2 Sr. G Jaydan Baxter. Channelview went 10-19 (2-10) last season, and will Gustavo Escamilla be led by 5’10 So. G Nehemiah Jordan.
6A Region III - District 23
Shadow Creek went 23-11 (11-3) last season and had an early first-round upset. The Sharks are always a mainstay within the top of the district. The only year that they‘ve missed the playoffs was their first Varsity season 2016-17. The Sharks will feature 6’2 Jr. PG Michael Collins. They will also lean heavily on 6’5 Sr. F Kaden Tate, and 6’2 Jr. G Julian Cuillier. Once 6’6 Jr. G Bryce Jackson returns (leg injury which caused him to miss all of last season), Shadow Jaydan Baxter Creek becomes a really dangerous team. Dawson went 31-6 (13-1) last season and made it to the third round of the playoffs again. The Eagles are always tough, and will be led by 6’7 Sr. PF Charles Anderson who is committed to Texas Tech on a football scholarship. They have a potential game changing 6’2 So. G Maleek Simeus who transferred from Coronado High School (Henderson, NV). Strake Jesuit went 24-9 (10-4) last season and fell in the first round of the playoffs. The Crusaders will be led by 6’7 Jr. F Lucas Hobin who averaged 8 points per game and shot 40% from behind the arc. They also bring back a healthy 6’7 Sr. F Matias Mur Michael Collins who will help them out a lot, as well as 6’0 Sr. G Wesley Westbrook and 6’1 Jr. G Otto Leone will add depth once football season is completed. Pearland went 13-20 (6-8) last season. The Oilers made a very interesting move by bringing over Delrick Brown as their new Head Coach, he was the assistant coach at Dawson HS. The focal returning pieces for the Oilers will be 6’6 Jr. PF Ezenna Ibe and 6’3 Sr. W Dearre Farris. A couple transfers who should make some noise are 6’4 So. G Devan Brown, son of the head coach who played varsity for Dawson last season as a freshman, and 6’3 So. G Byron Bibbs (from Summer Creek HS). Alief Taylor went 19-14 (10-4) last season and made the playoffs. They will be led by three year varsity letterman 6’6 Sr. W Nathan Konongolo who put up 12.5 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2.7 Charles Anderson steals per game, and 6’6 Sr. PF Nefi Taiwo.

The Rams will depend on 6’6 Sr. F David Uwalaka who averaged 7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, and 6’4 Sr. G Ricky Wilson averaged 5.1 points per game last season. Alief Hastings went 4-23 (2-12) last season. They will look to 6’2 Sr. G Amari Wilkerson who averaged 13.8 points per game last season to be the catalyst for the Bears. Dickinson went 25-10 (10-2) last season and made it to the second round of the playoffs. The district’s leading scorer 5’11 Sr. PG Qasim Boyd who averaged 23.4 points, 5.3 steals, and 3.3 assists per game, is expected to return from a foot injury during or after the Christmas Break. Clear Springs went 21-12 (7-5) last season and finished 3rd in district play and went to the second round to the playoffs. The Chargers will once again lean on these two players 6’5 Sr. SG Alec Belter and 6’5 Sr. F Michael Sylvalie. Also watch for 6’6 Jr. F Izu Emelife. The Chargers will be tough again this season as they bring back the entire team. Clear Lake went 22-14 (7-5) last season and made it to the playoffs, after finishing 4th in district. The Falcons bring back their leading scorer from last season in 6’3 Sr. PG Jerrick Guidry 13.6 points and 4.4 assists per game. 5’11 Sr. G Jason Obert and 6’2 Jr. G Marshall Mason. Clear Brook went 16-17 (6-6) last year as they missed out on the playoffs by one game. The Wolverines are seeking to clinch a playoff spot this year. They have two seniors who will lead the way 5’9 Sr. PG Zion Norl and 6’5 Sr. F Michael Mack. They also have newcomer 5’9’’ Fr. PG Christian Brown who will be tough. Clear Falls went 28-8 (10-2) last season and made it to the Region III championship game. The Knights have graduated a lot of talent, and the question remains…. Who will step up for the Knights this season? The Knights bring back a few varsity players from last season like 5’11 Jr. G Keyne Yzquierdo and 6’0 Sr. G Mark Coronado. Clear Creek went 11-23 (1-11) last season. The Wildcats will lean heavily on 6’2 Sr. G Nathaniel Lueking 10.5 points 8.5 rebounds per game, last season. They would’ve received great contributions from 6’5 Sr. G Christian Umana who is committed to the Air Force (NCAA D1), but he suffered a season ending injury during a fall ball game. Brazoswood went 9-25 (1-11) last year, and will utilize these two prospects to try to make some noise 6’0 Sr. G Cameron Rodriguez and 6’1 Sr. G Derek De Leon.

Entering this season, the odds on favorite for the district title is Lufkin, and it’s easy to see why. For starters - the Panthers won 1st Place last season, went 2 rounds deep in the playoffs and they return not only the best player in the district, but one of the best players in the state. Sophomore Austin Brown is the unquestioned go-to guy for the Panthers, as he is supremely talented which is why he is holding several Power 5 offers. Juniors Da’lynn Newmann and Marcellus Parks will be important pieces for the Panthers as they have a very tough non-district schedule that will have them battle tested. Nacogdoches returns senior Jaylon Brown to a team that made the playoffs last season as the 2nd seed. Senior Reginald Flemons will be looking to help get the Dragons back to the playoffs. Kingwood Park made the playoffs with a losing record last season. Senior Davion Sanford is the leader of the team and will be trying to get them back to the postseason for the 3rd consecutive year. Senior Jayden Henderson made 1st team all district last season and will try and repeat the feat. They also return Junior Brad Garcia who took home Newcomer of the Year honors. Expect for Nacogodches and Kingwood Park to battle for 2nd place just like last season. Porter returns Da’Vohn Jonas-Reid to a team that made the playoffs, and will vie for a spot this season. Dayton and Huntsville will try to improve on tough seasons last year as they combined for 14 wins.
5A Region III - District 17
This district is going to be one of the most competitive districts in Region 3. Port Arthur Memorial, who are the reigning district champs, rode the district championship all the way to the regional tournament before falling to eventual champ, Killeen Ellison. This PA Memorial team returns plenty of talent, and will make some noise this year. Junior Kendall Hilstock improved a lot over the summer and will be looked upon to take that next step this season. Junior Cam Bryant also has gotten better and is a match up problem due to his strength and skill set. They also add Junior Devin Mercer who returns to Port Arthur after living in Houston the past few years. He adds a dimension to the team that will make them much better. Also watch for Senior Hayden Underwood and Junior Amir Young. Barbers Hill finished 2nd last season and lost some key pieces but returned the most size in the district. Senior Jordan Smith returns at 6’6, talented Junior Aiden Williams comes in at 6’7, Sophomore Wesley Wake checks in at 6’8 and they have Freshman Gabe Childress at 6’6. Junior D’Andre Charlot will be looked upon to lead the backcourt along with Senior Chase Smith. The 3rd team with a chance at the district title is Goose Creek Memorial who finished 3rd last season. Senior Za’Vion Spencer is the leader along with Junior Jaxon Woods. Port Neches Groves came in 4th last season and gained the services of one of the top young scorers from last season in Sophomore Langston Adams Jr. Junior Edison Gasper will be looking to help lead them back to the playoffs. Nederland will look to get back to the playoffs behind the play of Seniors Maurice Holmes and DJ Francis who made All District last season. Also Sophomore Dallas Rosette will be a name to

Crosby had a tough season last year but returned Senior Dylan Banks and Sophomore Evan Egans to a team who will look to grab a playoff spot. Seniors Kylan Williams and Leren Curry will look to improve Baytown Lee.
5A Region III - District 18
Due to graduations, this district will experience a major turnover, and will be very fun to watch this season. Let’s start with reigning district champion Manvel who lost a ton to graduation but do return Senior Fourest Mills who will be the leader of the group. He is experienced and played a key role in last year’s run to the 2nd round. They also return Junior Ifeayni Okoro who played some last season as a sophomore. They also add the services of talented sophomore BJ Green who transferred from St Thomas Episcopal. He is certain to add firepower into the Manvel backcourt. Senior Anson Johnson will finally be the go to man for Texas City this season. The forward has gotten better every year, and will now look to lead Texas City back to the playoffs. Plus, Senior Glen Parker will be an important piece to Texas City’s success. Junior Taj Pettaway will lead Galveston Ball this season and if San Diego St football signee Will Cianfrini decides to lace the sneakers up one last time, Ball will be a force in this district, New Head Coach Anthony Stephens will lead La Porte this season, and he has enough pieces to get into the playoffs. They are coming off a 12 win season but have increased expectations this season. Junior Trent Callies is the name to remember as he has been on varsity for 3 years and is maturing into a go-to man role. Senior Matthew Williams and Junior Phillip Ned will be important to get La Porte to the playoffs. Friendswood made the playoffs last season and could very well find themselves back in the mix, as they return some very good pieces. Junior Dyllan Baker is back and had a very good summer along with Junior Brady Fiesinger who is a guard who can fill it up. Senior Luke Ballard is the man in the middle for them. Watch for newcomer, Freshman Chase Richardson who will be a key contributor. Angleton returns Junior Braydon Campbell who has been very good for two years on varsity. Senior Michael Martinez will provide leadership, and the Wildcats are expecting a ton of talent to come off the football field including Seniors Langston Myrick, Junior Kalvin Kirkendoll and Freshman Landon Miles. Santa Fe will look to Junior Kenny Torres to get them into playoff contention.

Houston Sterling and Madison tied for the district title last season but this year it could be headed to the campus of Houston Sterling as they return a boatload of talent from a team that went 3 rounds deep in the playoffs last season. The Senior trio of Darnel Williams, Christian Rogers and Kevon Bowens were all pivotal to their success last season, and will be looking to take that next step into the regional tournament. Sophomore Elijah Hart will add some depth to the Sterling roster. Madison, also went 3 rounds deep last season, returns Lamar University signee Senior Jayden Gambrell who is one of the most prolific scorers in the area. He will have help as the Marlins will receive this influx of talent once football season ends. Joe Wylie (CB) who was a starter last year and averaged 14 ppg and 8 rpg. Nicolas Golden (right tackle) was a part time starter who averaged 4.3 ppg and 5.4 rpg. Camben Emauel (QB) who is the nephew of Rice legend Bert Emanuel. Head Coach Craig Maura is quite optimistic about these Marlins, “We led the entire state in scoring while averaging 83 ppg. We lost Mason Allen (Jacksonville JC) who was a significant part of our offense. With some luck we will be able to go as far or further than we did last year.” Senior Jouk Mayon leads Sharpstown who is looking for back to back playoff appearances. Milby lost the 6’8 Johnson brothers in the offseason, so it will be up to Senior Delani Pestania to get them back to the postseason. Junior Darius Owens and Sophomore Kobe Brown are names to watch for Milby as well. Senior Beto Ramirez will look to help Waltrip attain one of those playoff spots, while Senior Jonathan Shields of Galena Park will be seeking to do the same. Austin, Wisdom and Northside will all look to improve on tough seasons last year.
5A Region III - District 20
Last season, Fort Bend Marshall ran the table in this district and made it all the way to the regional finals. Most believe they will repeat as district champs. Senior Chris Catchings who is committed to Air Force, will be looked upon to lead this team along with Junior Eian Lowe. A name to look out for is Junior Kevin Sargeant who can do it all. He is poised to have a huge year. However, the Buffs better not get too confident. The team that could bring Marshall’s reign to an end is Fulshear. They made it to the 2nd round last season, and return some very talented players. The Junior combo of Grayson Bennett and Toby Princewell have been contributors for a couple of years, now it’s time to take that next step. Senior Eric McGee will be looked upon for leadership and Sophomore Jermiah Moynihan is a newcomer who will make a splash. Kempner made it to the playoffs last season and will look to the Senior trio of Jacob Broussard, Noel Ike and Israel Akeye to get them back and contend for a district title. In fact, Kempner returns their top 6 scorers from last season. Foster also has a Senior trio they will lean on and that is Bode Karunwi, CJ White and Jack Lamkin. Foster is seeking a 5th consecutive playoff berth. Junior Matthew Nora will look to get Lamar Consolidated in the playoffs along with Senior Elijah Flowers & Junior Mason Lockett. Junior Donovan Fears will look to lead Willowridge back to the playoffs as he has gotten bigger and more athletic. Randle Senior Justice Tjilboa and Rosenberg Terry Senior Dae’Shon Green will look to improve their teams who combined for 13 wins last season.

This is a very interesting district which could very well come down to the final days of the regular season. The favorite is A&M Consolidated as they advanced to the 3rd round of the playoffs last season. They will be led by Senior Adam Jackson who was 2nd team All District. Senior Jaimon Chambers made Honorable Mention All-District and will look to embrace a larger role. Lake Creek returns 1st Team All-District selection Senior Jett Sutton along with 2nd Team Selection Aedan Lewis. Brenham didn’t make the playoffs last season, but were really young, and returns their entire team which includes some talent. Junior Jakobe Mathis is talented and will open a ton of eyes this season, along with fellow juniors Elijah Ferguson and Isaac Powell. Senior Diego Estrada is the glue to the team. Look for Brenham to make some noise as well. College Station featuring Junior Jackson Verdugo is another team that missed the postseason, but expect for them to fight for a spot this season. Senior Brandon Taylor and Xavier Portalis will lead Magnolia West this season. They made the playoffs and won 19 games last year. Rudder stunned everyone and made the regional tournament. But the team was senior laden, and it may be somewhat of a rebuilding year. Junior Jaquise Martin and Junior Randon Cooks are the leading returning scorers for Rudder. Senior Caleb Craig played a role in last year’s team as well. Magnolia will seek to get back to their winning ways behind the play of Senior Callen Franklin and Junior Jayden Chavez who can really score the ball. Junior Deveron Ogunye can really shoot the ball and will play a vital role in Magnolia’s success. Junior Noah Stull will look to lead Montgomery after a tough season.

Silsbee by far is the best team in the district as they return so much talent from a senior group that has been to a pair of regional finals and a state semifinal during their high school careers. They will be looking to cap their careers off with another trip to San Antonio, and they have the team to do it. Let’s start with University of Memphis commit Jared Harris. The senior is one of the most talented players in the state, and is primed to have a monster season. He hopes to be re-joined by 5 star football prospect Drelon Miller, who recently decommitted from Texas A&M and had reopened his recruitment. At press time, his options included USC, LSU and Colorado. It’s been rumored that Miller is undecided whether or not he will play his final season of basketball or enroll in college after the holiday break. The Basketball Gods are trying to tell us something - and we think Miller will suit up alongside Harris this season. With him, Senior LaMarcus Botley will add shooting and defense, while Junior Troy Rice will add a body on the inside. Freshman Payton Jones is the next star player out of Silsbee as he has game beyond his years. Little Cypress Mauriceville has one of the most talented players in the area on their team in Junior Alantheon Winn. After an injury plagued junior season, Winn is poised to have a huge senior campaign. Jasper will look to Junior Kiotti Armstrong and Senior Elvis Dupree to get them back to the playoffs. West Orange Stark will look to improve on a 1-11 district campaign and will lean on Senior Joshua Holifield to lead the team. Also look for Juniors Jamikael Davis and Jamar O’Neal to help improve on last year’s output and Sophomore Germicah Davis will provide backcourt depth. Junior Brice Linder will try to get Bridge City back to the playoffs two years after making it to the 2nd round. Vidor led by Senior Braden Root and Lumberton with Senior Tristen Dean and Junior Rysen Hooker will look to sneak into the playoffs.

Last year only 1 game separated 1st and 2nd place, and that scenario could very well duplicate itself this season. Hamshire Fannett returns 3 starters, including Junior Jackson Seastrunk who is a flat out scoring machine. His back court mates are Seniors Jeremiah Smith and Xavier Leger will form a 3 guard lineup that can compete with the best of them. Big man Wyatt Samaha returns for Hardin Jefferson and he is a double double waiting to happen. He was a key piece to a team that won 30 games last season and made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs. He will have the services of Senior Brayden Marshall who can knock down the perimeter shot. Also, Junior Taveyian Thomas is another scoring threat for HJ. Huffman will look to make 14 straight playoff appearances this season and they have a very good chance to do so. Led by Senior Tyelin Garcia they will seek to finish better than 3rd this season. The X-Factor could be Junior Ethen Gerth who fared well during Rucker On Wood back in August. Plus keep an eye on Senior Ridge Thomas and Junior Kurtis Felder as they have been on varsity for a couple of years. Liberty has a new coach

Washington won the district last season and is returning the best player in the district in Senior Chris McDermott. He is a walking double double and will be tough to deal with every night out. He will have his sidekick in Senior guard Odis Carter who started on the team that made it all the way to the state championship game last season. They hope to get the services of Senior Abraham Kirksey who will add another scorer to the team. At press time he was awaiting clearance after transferring in from Aldine. The X Factor will be Junior Samuel Johnson who has been a contributor on varsity for 2 seasons. Mickey Leland (YES, Mickey Leland) will look to contend for the district title as they return the talented senior Cameron Wagner as well as senior guard Jarius Mattox. Mickey Leland made it to the 2nd round and almost pulled off the upset against Waco Connally. Wheatley looked really good during the Super 16 Extravaganza back in October. This team has plenty of pieces to work with. The Wildcats barely missed the playoffs last season and are returning scoring guard Junior Quinton Sanders and Senior Treylan Bernard. Junior Kobre Dickerson will add some punch as well. Yates lost their leading scorer from the past two seasons when Calvin Murphy III left to attend school in Arizona. That leaves the burden on Senior JaQuan Brandon and Juniors Deshon Scott and Jordan Andrus. Also Kendon Vaughn can get hot and shoot the lights out. The Senior duo of Coreon Hardy and Nicholas Thomas will look to get Worthing into the postseason this year. Furr graduated their top players, and will lean on Waquinn Thomas and Erik Estrada to try and match last season’s success. Seniors Michael Smith and Kevin Mitchell will be the primary guys for Kashmere as they head into the 2nd year of head coach Dominic Thomas tenure. Client Babineaux will try to keep North Forest in games while Scarborough will look to be more competitive.

El Campo won the district last season and rode that to a 3rd round appearance. They are the favorites to win this district again with the return of Seniors Ledarian Lewis and Oliver Miles in the fold. Bellville has a good duo who can make nights rough for opponents and those two are Senior Deacon Bauershlag and Junior DJ Sanders. Royal and Navasota finished second and will look to contend for the top spot this season. Navasota is led by Senior Kaddon Hubbard while Royal will be looking to Kendarian Vinson and Torian Wilkins to get them back to the playoffs. Wharton missed the playoffs by one game and is returning Seniors Jakorian Baldridge and CJ Scott to try to get them into the postseason. Needville was right there at the end, also missing the playoffs by one game. Seniors Caden Slater and Gianni Pisano. Sealy will look to improve on a winless district campaign.

Stafford ran the table last season, and advanced all the way to the regional final before losing to Boerne. They will have serious competition for the district championship in Iowa Colony who returns a boatload of talent from a team that finished 2nd last season. Juniors Robert “RJ” Greene Jr. and Haydon Colston are the key pieces along with Daylen Dalcour. Expect Iowa Colony to be there at the end in late February/early March. Meanwhile, Stafford returns Lamar signee Braden East along with guard Maxwell Fries. Jasiya Johnson leads La Marque heading into the season along with Zion Simpson. Sophomores Jecaryous Oliver and Derrick Edison are keys to the future for La Marque. Brazosport has Junior Savion Lewis and Tre’veon Galloway back this season. The X Factor could be Khelyn Mitchell. They could snag the 4th playoff spot again. West Columbia barely missed the postseason last year and is returning Senior Trevon Lewis. Sweeny and Bay City will look to improve on rough seasons. Sweeny returns Senior Tyler Mills and Junior Clinton Varner while Bay City will lean on Senior Carlon Jones and Junior Alexander Estrada.

Ben Fears (Sr) and young fellow Loukas Naum (So) will be looked upon to help the Crusaders be successful. Big Wesley Stallings (Sr) will be the go-to-guy for St Pius. Also, Grant Shupak (Sr) and his 19 ppg return for the Panthers as they strive to improve from an 8 win season. St Thomas Catholic will lean on Evan Levy (Jr) and Aron Valentine (Sr) to lead the way, as the lone returning players who logged significant minutes last year. The Village has the super skilled Evan Cochran (Sr) back in the fold, look for them to give teams problems with his size and skill set. 5A: The Woodlands Christian return Tres Luzey (Sr) along with his brother Morgan Luzey (So). They also add the services of talented Howie Keene (Jr) who came over from Concordia Lutheran, Hunter Bowman (Sr) is also a key piece for The Warriors. Second Baptist returns Dyllan Thompson (Sr) as well as Michael Olaly (Sr). Adam Vessel (So) and Alec Scarborough (Sr) will be contributors along with Reese Alston (Fr) who is the son of retired NBA & Streetball legend -Rafer “Skip to My Lou” Alston. 4A: St Thomas Episcopal return UTRGV signee Nathan Law (Sr) along with his brother Aidan Law (Jr). Micah Gichana (Sr) and Noah Richards (Sr) are also big pieces for this group who lost in the state tournament last season. They both are coming off really solid summers. Andrew Seller (So) is the future of the program. 3A: St. Francis Episcopal is loaded with talent led by national prospect Nigel Walls (Jr). He along with guys like Omarion Harvey (Jr), John Laboy (Jr) and Christian Hodge (Jr) will make this team tough to beat. Westbury Christian will return the talented Jason Scott (Jr) who has the tools to become one of the best in class, and all it takes is - consistency.

Houston Christian is the reigning SPC Champions and return ‘do everything’ point guard Montana Wheeler (Jr) to lead the charge. Chris Adlam (Sr) is poised to have a breakout season along with Carter Seeliger (Sr). They will be challenged by a very talented Episcopal team led by George Mason signee Justin Begg (Sr). Jakeel Registe (Sr) comes back home to try and win another SPC Championship. Aziz Olajuwon (Fr) is an up and coming star for Episcopal. St John’s has one the best players in the country Sebastian Williams-Adams (Jr). He will get help from Malachi Booker (Fr) who is one of the most talented freshmen in the state.

Legacy the School of Sports Science always has a boat load of talent and this year is no different. Zion Pipkin (Sr) is signed with Wichita St, and is one of the best combo guards around. Courtland Thomas (Sr) is an intriguing prospect as he is 6’7 and can step out and hit the 3. Javarius Thompson (Sr) also gives them another scorer in the backcourt. They play a national schedule and will be battle tested. Good Vision Academy is loaded with a trio of guys who were at PSAT last season. Missouri commit Trent Burns (Sr) came over along with Cam Woodberry (Sr) and Samuel Cole (Sr).

HERE’S HOW TO GET COMP TICKETS TO A COLLEGE GAME AREA HOME GAMES TO SEE (AS OF 11/13/23) By Doug Jones
Did you know the NCAA allows most colleges to provide complimentary tickets to high school coaches, as well as prospects with as many as 2 guest(s) who attend their HOME GAMES? These tickets are issued on a game by game basis. Once approved, the coach / prospect will be added to pass list, which is normally located at the HOME WILL CALL. You are responsible for all other expenses! Below are the HOME SCHEDULES for 10 colleges located in the area. Plus, we are providing you with the cell number to the exact coach in charge of providing the tickets. Be sure to TEXT (not call) in a timely manner, and try to do it BEFORE game day. Let coach know you obtained his number from “Da Magazine”. Hopefully, this will help expedite the process of getting more high school prospects to witness college basketball games in person, and increase their awareness of what it takes to become a college player.
