Happy New Year!

Most of us start the New Year by making resolutions that will impact our future for the better. DC Ranch is no different.

While our community has a lot to be proud of with world-class golf courses, top-of-the-line amenities, and a robust standards and maintenance program, it’s important to know what’s next.

DC Ranch currently commands some of the highest home appreciation values of any community in Arizona. To maintain a superior quality of life and keep home values high, DC Ranch must invest in its future.

That includes technology, infrastructure, capital projects, and lifestyle experiences.

Our strategic plan initiative—DCR 2020—will prioritize what residents and stakeholders feel are the most important aspects to focus on for the next three to five years.

Thank you to all the residents, DC Ranch businesses, and other stakeholders who participated in the input sessions in November and December. The project consultant is analyzing responses and compiling a list of the top suggested priorities. All residents will have another chance to weigh in on where DC Ranch is headed with an online survey to be emailed in the next month or so. A comprehensive plan to guide DC Ranch leadership will be written and shared in early summer.

This year you can also look forward to the launch of a new DC Ranch website in the spring, several new events, and a new executive director of the Ranch Association.

Planning for the future is a great way to start off the New Year. I wish you and your family great success in 2017 as well!

Ranch Updates Resident satisfaction with DC Ranch Security ranks high

T

he results of the 2016 Security Satisfaction Survey show that most residents are satisfied with the community’s current security provider, Allied Universal, formerly Allied Barton. Residents were polled on satisfaction of service, professionalism, response rate, visibility of patrol vehicles and customer service. Most of the respondents say they use security to report a concern, followed by snake removal assistance and home-monitoring while out of town or on vacation.

Improvements will continue to be made to increase community engagement of security staff while on patrol in neighborhoods. Patrol rounds are conducted a minimum of once per shift, or three times daily. Residents should feel welcomed by their presence from a quick hello or friendly smile.

Patrol 1 and Patrol 2 service the community round-the-clock. Patrol 3—the electronic golf cart—is used to monitor paths, trails and neighborhood parks during daylight hours, and is usually more visible during the summer months.

While professionalism of the staff ranked high in the survey, training on proper greetings, call-back procedures and checking identification will be on-going.

Residents can assist with improving gate management by routinely updating their guest lists and submitting a photo I.D. and a verbal validation code, all of which can be completed at DCRanch.com/Security. The survey also identified that many residents are not familiar with the variety of security services offered.

A fairly equal number of responses were received among new, medium- and long-term residents with a total of 557 responses. The 2014 survey, which was used to identify and address security and safety concerns of residents, drew 620 responses. Following the 2014 research, DC Ranch switched providers to Allied Universal and has renewed for a third year. The high level of satisfaction confirms that residents are pleased with the change.

he Homestead Playhouse kicks off its 11th year with a production of “Shrek the Musical Jr.” Based on the Dreamworks movie, this musical is a hilarious tale of magic, acceptance and perseverance as Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, with many fairytale twists and turns along the way.

Young residents and friends are invited to audition for a role in this unique play. Theatre newcomers are especially encouraged to participate— here are five reasons why being in a play is great: 1. Build confidence and leadership skills 2. Hone public speaking and improvisation skills 3. Practice teamwork and collaboration 4. Explore creative outlets 5. Have a whole lot of fun!

QUALITY DENTAL CARE, E, PERSONALIZED FOR YOUR is launching the DC Ranch Gives program. It provides one point of contact for residents, partners, stakeholders, and merchants seeking to assist those in need. The program has two primary components: Volunteer Opportunities and Donation Opportunities.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES DC Ranch Gives identifies opportunities for residents to volunteer both on and off the Ranch throughout the year.

Residents can volunteer at a variety of activities around the Ranch, acting as ticket takers and game/candy booth attendants at events; concession sales or cast meal planning for The Homestead Playhouse; and planting, harvesting and clean-up days at The Community Garden.

Service projects will be organized that make it easy for residents to engage off-site with local nonprofits, with a preference for projects that encourage individuals and families of all ages to participate together, such as building Bags of Hope at Kitchen on the Street and serving dinner at Andre House.

DONATION OPPORTUNITIES Collection drives are another way residents can make a meaningful contribution. DC Ranch selects local agencies or nonprofit organizations with established collection drives as beneficiaries, with a goal of four drives annually. The first two drives for 2017 are Furry Friends Food Drive (dog and cat food) benefitting the Foothills Animal Rescue and a diaper/baby items drive benefitting Maggie’s Place.

Two more drives will be scheduled in conjunction with existing DC Ranch events such as the Back to School Bash and Turkey Trot.

VOLUNTEER ADVISORY COMMITTEE In 2016 a survey titled “4 questions-4 days to answer-4 the benefit of others!” was emailed to residents to gauge interest in volunteerism and guide the volunteer program. Thirty four percent of respondents indicated an interest in helping coordinate volunteer efforts.

New Year kicks off with a focus on the future

Ranch is widely known as one of the country’s premiere places to live. How did it achieve this status? With a vision: to build the finest master-planned community of its time.

Today DC Ranch has a real estate value of $3.8 billion and garners a premium over nearby properties. The economic valuation of homes typically reflects the underlying quality of life those properties enable.

As the community nears its 20th anniversary, residents, stakeholders, and DC Ranch leadership are embarking on a strategic planning initiative to chart the community’s course for the next three to five years. This is important for maintaining DC Ranch’s desirability and premium home values.

The DCR 2020 initiative will be a road map for how to protect that value by laying the groundwork for multi-year priorities to guide future operations decisions and improvements. The goal is for DC Ranch to remain on the forefront of technology,

services, capital projects and community life initiatives that create value for homeowners and stakeholders.

More than 100 residents participated in a series of professionally-facilitated feedback sessions at The Homestead in late November. Information gathered from the meetings will guide the development of the strategic plan, which is expected to be completed by early summer.

Developing a strategic plan takes collaboration. Since the beginning, residents have had an active role at DC Ranch. The first and most significant opportunity for resident involvement was offered through the Community Visioning Collaborative in 1999.

Residents and stakeholders developed a set of DC Ranch Community Values that still guide the community today.

More than 15 years later, residents continue to play an active role in charting the community’s future. The process began with a brand management study in 2016 to assess the current reputation and perception of DC Ranch among residents, stakeholders, and the public at large.

Then, a resident survey in October helped give a snapshot of the community’s evolving demographics and interests. DCR 2020 is the final phase of the project that will help the community determine where it wants to go and how.

The strategic plan launched last November with a series of 10 interactive resident focus groups, plus input from other community stakeholders. According to Douglas Griffen, founder of Advanced Strategy Center and project consultant, resident feedback is crucial to the process. He led the sessions using an innovative technological approach. He set up a mobile laptop lab at The Homestead Community Center where participants were asked to consider a series of topics including what they value at DC Ranch and what they would like the community to focus on in the future.

Look for a short, Ranch-wide survey to give input on key initiatives that have surfaced. This information will guide the development of the DCR 2020 plan to identify priorities and address future challenges over the next three to five years. A final draft of the plan is expected to be completed in early summer. Residents will be notified when the plan is complete.

The Herb Box Appoints Alex Stratta as Director of Culinary

T

he Herb Box welcomed a new addition to its leadership team when James Beard Award-winning and Michelinstarred Chef, Alex Stratta, assumed a newly created role as director of culinary.

Stratta will oversee all culinary aspects of The Herb Box’s three restaurant locations, its catering division, and its grab-and-go market.

When this very fortuitous opportunity emerged, the owner of The Herb Box, Susan Wilcox, was not looking to create a new position. Wilcox and Stratta were connected through mutual friends and she soon realized they both shared a commitment to the process of running and growing restaurants. “Alex and I had a meeting of the minds. Our passions and vision for the growth of the company perfectly aligned,” said Wilcox.

aetitia Hua, a 10-year resident of DC Ranch, was recently crowned Miss Scottsdale 2017. The win puts her one step closer to the Miss Arizona contest in June 2017, and then her ultimate goal—the Miss America national competition in July 2017.

A recent graduate of the University of Edinburgh Law School, Laetitia defies expectations. She sees her pageant involvement as an opportunity to polish her professional skills, compete for significant scholarship funding, empower young women, and promote a global education agenda that supports multiculturalism. She stopped

by The Homestead recently for a candid chat about her past and future.

What was it like moving to Scottsdale from Paris?

Well, I didn’t speak a word of English when I arrived at age 8—I spoke French and Mandarin. I went to school in Grayhawk in an ESL program. But I learned quickly and everyone was so nice. When my mom (Mei Lin Lee) and I moved to DC Ranch, I went to Copper Ridge School for two years and then four years at Chaparral High School.

Tell us more about your platform, “Celebrating Cultural Diversity through Community Engagement.”

Growing up in Paris, I was exposed to many people from diverse backgrounds, so it feels natural for me to work with community organizations to promote cultural diversity and secondary language development, especially among young people. I’m a big believer in the benefits of learning multiple languages and opening yourself to other cultures. That’s harder for Americans to do, as the distance between countries is greater.

How are you putting your platform into action?

I volunteered with the Phoenix Sister Cities program for 10 years and recently completed a community and economic development internship there. My focus is the youth ambassador program, working to send U.S. students to Taipei, Taiwan, which is where my family came from originally. In January, I will be co-hosting a gala at Wrigley Mansion with the Asian Corporate & Entrepreneur Leaders (ACEL) with proceeds going to the ACEL Asian American Scholarship Fund.

For Miss Scottsdale, I played Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude.” I started playing piano when I was six. I’m very interested in supporting the local classical music community and encouraging young musicians.

How much do you practice each day?

Not enough! I practice a lot when I’m really feeling it—two or three hours— but other times I’m lucky to log in 20 minutes. Right now I’m spending more time fundraising as an ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and studying for the New York state bar exam next summer.
