Educational assets in our community Ranch News is a not-for-profit newspaper published monthly by the DC Ranch Community Council to share timely and relevant information with residents. The publication seeks to build community by connecting neighbors through stories and pictures and to offer a product valuable to advertisers. Ranch Updates Ranch Association board approves Standards for Conduct

Ranch Association Annual Meeting and election is April 11

A

fter nearly a year of work, the board of directors gave its stamp of approval to the code of conduct for residents of DC Ranch. The “DC Ranch Standards for Conduct” —a compilation of the CC&Rs, board policies, and local statutes —received favorable support from Neighborhood Voting Members and residents during recent informational sessions in preparation for the board’s decision. Resident feedback was encouraged and many of the suggestions received were incorporated into the Standards prior to the board vote at its March 7 meeting. A draft of the Standards was also posted online at DCRanch.com on Feb. 12 for residents to review, and printed copies were made available at The Ranch Offices on Market Street.

Voluntary compliance, education and communication will continue to be the key priorities. Enforcement, when necessary, will be reserved for instances when gaining resident cooperation to remedy a violation has not worked, or for egregious situations. In extreme instances, legal action or loss of community privileges may occur.

Although the board set definitions and penalties regarding speeding, the enforcement mechanism is not yet finalized. The Ranch Association is working with a traffic engineer and Scottsdale Police to identify additional speed monitoring options other than the data being collected by the five electronic speed signs in use. Additional measures to curb speeding will be addressed at future board meetings.

Nearly 100 homeowners participated and provided feedback on the newly-approved Standards for Conduct during the recent Town Hall meeting.

The Standards for Conduct are part of a larger rollout of DC Ranch Standards, which also address landscape and homes. DC Ranch is working to finalize the guides that will be delivered to homeowners in an easy-toread, understandable format.

The Ranch Association plans to liven up this year’s event with DC Ranch-style cuisine, fun trivia, and prize giveaways. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments and interact with board members. The meeting will also be a farewell send-off for long-time board member Joe McGarr.

McGarr served as board treasurer since June 2009; his commitment and financial expertise will be missed.

If you are decluttering, spring cleaning, or emptying your pantry before leaving town, don’t toss out things that others could use! Food banks are always in need of non-perishable food items, personal hygiene and toiletry items, diapers, and paper goods. ‘The JunGirl Book’ world premiere at The Homestead Playhouse

he Homestead Playhouse is proud to celebrate its 10th anniversary by staging the world debut of “The JunGirl Book” this month. Local playwright Anne Negri jumped at the chance to adapt Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book” and is working with director Amanda Pintore and DC Ranch’s new Art and Education Coordinator Lindsay Vanegas to fine-tune the script as rehearsals progress. The result is an engaging production that should appeal to all ages, including residents who haven't seen a Playhouse production in a while.

My biggest educational focus for this show is developing the body awareness and movement potential of the ensemble. Our focus on storytelling through movement will not only bring the characters of the show to life, it will also shape the entire story. I hope to see students moving in ways that are new and exciting to them.

Connections and challenges Environmental awareness With two gardens on the school grounds—the “inside” garden and the DC Ranch Community Garden adjacent to the school—Copper Ridge students have many opportunities to learn about nature directly. With guidance from 5th grade teacher Nanette Hubbell, they recently started incorporating coffee grounds from the nearby McDonald’s restaurant into garden compost, learning about how recycling can reduce landfill waste.

Parental involvement It takes a village.

Having a cadre of parents who support the school—and each other—as they work to educate their children is priceless. This year, the Copper Ridge PTO initiated a “CRS Connects” program that matches new families with “ambassadors”—veteran parents who can help newcomers navigate and feel more comfortable in their new school. The PTO provides volunteers for school year and special event projects, and raises funds for aides, materials, technology, student recognition, teacher support, and events.

Community support Like all public schools, Copper Ridge serves residents in the surrounding community, and its funding is based on the number of students enrolled and actually attending each day. With increased competition from charter and private schools, the school is working hard to provide the academic rigor and support needed by a wide range of students, and to provide rich and engaging opportunities in the arts, athletics, and extracurricular activities. Many parents value having a neighborhood school nearby—often close enough for their children to walk—where it’s easier to for classmates to get together after school.

Volunteering as a steward with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC) is a wonderful way to help support, learn about, and participate in the mission of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Stewards bring their unique contributions to a wide variety of programs including tours, scientific exploration, rugged outdoor work, and public outreach.

According to Kathy Dwyer, Director of Steward Operations, “Interest and enthusiasm are the only prerequisites.”

To get some inside perspective, we asked Beth Overton, Senior Facilities Manager for the DC Ranch Community Council, to share some thoughts about her path to becoming an MSC steward in January.

Becoming an MSC steward: Easier than you think!

Why did you decide to become a steward?

When I moved here from Flagstaff two years ago, I was really accustomed to exploring the wilderness. I started spending a lot of time running and hiking in the Preserve.

Then, during a mountain bike meetup, I met a former steward who told me all about the program. I decided that since I spend so much time in the Preserve already, I should be a steward.

What kind of training do stewards go through?

There is a New Steward Orientation (NSO) once a month. It’s an all-day meeting—about seven hours, including lunch and breaks—that provides an overview of the whole program. Stewards in training then log 20 hours, working with a mentor and exploring the different programs that interest them.

What surprised you most about the process?

It’s much easier than I anticipated! I thought everyone would have go through the same

NSO and then complete an orientation for every Steward program; instead, you can tailor your training and volunteer efforts to your interests and schedule. So if you’d rather work on fundraising than clearing trails— or vice versa—that’s fine. And if you only live here for part of the year, that’s okay, too.

What are your special interests? Goals?

Short term, I’d like to get to know as many trails as possible, both by hiking and biking on them. Long term, I’d eventually like to take on a larger leadership role.

Have any advice for people thinking about the steward program?

Get out there and do it! You’ll have a blast.

We talked during our training about why people become stewards: to give back, learn new things, get some exercise, share skills, make new friends, and, of course, have fun!

Those are all great reasons—plus the opportunity to help promote and protect the natural beauty of the Preserve.
