The history of Rockville Centre began on the banks of Mill River in the 1700s, where the first settlers in the area built their homes and their mills. In 1776, a fight broke out between a group of hidden Tories and rebels in a swamp near Anthony DeMott’s mill. It was in this fight that the first blood was spilled on Long Island during the American Revolution. In the 1800s, Mordecai Rock Smith had taken over operation of the mill and pond that DeMott had owned. He renamed them Smith Mill and Smith Pond. Smith became a reverend at the local Sand Hole Methodist Church and a pillar of the community. In 1848, Robert Pettit opened a general store in his home on Merrick Road. He applied to the federal government for permission to open a post office. Pettit wanted to honor Smith by naming the town after him, but the names Smithville, Smithburg, Smithfield and Smithtown were already in use. Even Rockville was taken, until Pettit added Centre to the name, creating the community of Rockville Centre. The hamlet of Rockville Centre
continued to grow. On July 15, 1893, a vote was held to determine whether Rockville Centre should incorporate and become a village. The motion passed, 139 to 79. On Aug. 19 of that year, the first village elections were held. Today, Rockville Centre is an even more vibrant community. According to the 2010 census, the village has a population of 24,023, more than half of whom are women. There are 6,221 family households in the village, with an average family size of 3.24. The Village of Rockville Centre provides its own power and water, giving residents these utilities for much lower rates than neighbors in surrounding areas. The village employs more than 200 people, operates its own police department and court system, runs its own Sanitation and Public Works departments, maintains its roads and buildings, and provides senior services and recreation for children. The mayor of the Village of Rockville Centre is currently Francis X. Murray. He works with the board of trustees to pass village laws and oversee the village. The deputy mayor is Kathleen Baxley,

and the trustees are Michael Sepe, Edward Oppenheimer and Emilio Grillo. The board of trustees meets in Village Hall in public session on the first Monday of the month, except in August. Public briefing sessions are held the Thursday before the regular meeting. The court system is overseen by two elected justices: William Croutier and Kevin McDonough. The court meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. for arraignments, and every Thursday for conferences and trials. Rockville Centre has a multitude of parks and trails available for residents. There are basketball and tennis courts, football fields, baseball diamonds, soccer pitches and softball fields. The John A. Anderson Recreation Center also hosts programs for children throughout the year. There’s also the Rockville Links Club, a private country club, providing residents with a nearby golf course and pool for members. The majority of students living in Rockville Centre attend the Rockville Centre School District. The schools have been ranked among the best in the region and the nation for many years. The school district has five elementary schools, a middle school and an award-winning high school, all with world-class staff. Rockville Centre is also home to many well-regarded institutions. St. Agnes Cathedral and the Diocese of Rockville Centre call the village their home. Mercy Medical Center is located within the village. And just next door is Molloy College, one of Long Island’s best institutes of higher learning.

A s an incorporated village, the govern-
ment of Rockville Centre handles many of the responsibilities usually left to the county and state in other areas. The village, which employs about 220 people, operates a police department and a court system, maintains its own electric, water, public works, sanitation, building and parks and recreation departments, and has community development and senior services agencies. It contracts with a volunteer department for fire protection. The mayor of Rockville Centre is Francis X. Murray, who was elected in 2015 to a second four-year term. Deputy Mayor Kathleen Baxley

South Side High School is regularly named one of the best schools in the country by Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report and many other rating groups. Dr. William Johnson has been the superintendent of the district for decades. There are events all year round throughout the village that highlight the reasons that it’s truly great: the community, the restaurants, the businesses and the individuals. In February, the Rockville Centre Community Fund hosts its biggest fundraiser of the year, a night at Margaritaville. The evening — which features food, fun and live music — is the Community Fund’s largest fundraiser of the year. The fund was created in 1987 by former mayor Gene Murray. It gives money and aid to Rockville Centre residents in their time of need. Spring is a busy (and fun) time of year in the village. Things kick off with South Side High School’s annual Red and Blue competition. Get ready to see everyone in Rockville Centre take sides, as signs spring up on houses and lawns and high school girls get ready for one of the biggest events of the year. Going strong for 100 years, Red and Blue is a color war that also fosters leadership, teamwork and school spirit. And as soon as the red and blue colors go away, the green comes out. March is also when the village hosts the annual Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade. Run by the Parade Committee for 26 years, the “parade that cares and shares” is also a fundraiser. Each year, the parade picks one local, one national and one Irish charity to support. More than $1 million has been donated to dozens of charities since the parade’s inception. comes to Rockville Centre in May. It’s when South Side High School hosts the Centre Stage Players and their original musical production. The Players are a group of regular and specialeducation kids who work together to create a totally original show that packs the auditorium at SSHS for days. At the end of May, the village pays respect to its fallen heroes with the annual Memorial Day parade. The event commemorates all those who Rockville Centre has lost, and has been going strong for decades. Each year, a different grand marshal, who is always a Rockville Centre veteran, is selected to lead the parade. Things heat up in June, when the Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual EAT.SHOP. ROCK. street fair. The fair exclusively features

display. The fall kicks off with the Chamber of Commerce’s Food and Wine Festival. People from across Long Island come to Rockville Centre to sample menu items from the local restaurants and try wines and beers from local manufacturers and brewers. In October, South Side High School gets the community together for Homecoming! The football team and the cheerleaders parade through the streets, joined by representatives from each of the school’s four classes and their themed floats. After the parade, the Cyclones take on one of their rival teams on the school’s new artificial turf field. As the weather gets cooler, even more people come to Rockville Centre for the village’s annual 5k/10k/Family Fun Run in November. Thousands of people come out to run the route that winds through the village’s streets. It’s one of the biggest events of the year. Things close out in December with the village’s annual tree lighting at the Village Green. Holiday songs and hot chocolate are available for everyone before one fortunate village resident gets to flip the switch and light up the big tree at the park. So mark your calendars early. Because no matter the time of year, there’s something fun going on in Rockville Centre.

Visit the John A. Anderson Recreation Center on Oceanside Road any time of the day, seven days a week, and you’ll find a flurry of activity for babies, children, teens, adults and senior citizens. The Recreation Department hosts more than 300 athletic, fitness, entertainment, educational and enrichment classes. Activities are tailored to every age group and interest, and are offered in fall, winter, spring and summer sessions. The Recreation Department Nursery School opened more than 40 years ago. Morning and afternoon sessions run throughout the year, with the opportunity to extend the pre-K experience through enrichment classes. Summer programs are offered for preschool, elementary and middle school students during July and August. The department also conducts sports camps for baseball, basketball, gymnastics and lacrosse instruction. Competitive sports sponsored by the Recreation Department include summer basketball leagues for youth and adults, softball leagues for men and women (spring, summer and fall). The Recreation Center is the home base for the L.I. Independent Gymnastics League and the United, Ultimate, Rising Stars and Club gymnastics teams. Special events that have attracted, in total, over 25,000 participants a year include the Village Fireworks celebration (July), Kids Fest (September), Halloween Ragamuffin Parade and Party (October), Family Fun Run, 5K and 10K Races (November), Christmas Tree Lighting, Chanukah Party and Breakfast with Santa’s Helpers (December), Easter Egg Hunt (March- April), and Gymnastics Shows (MayJune).

Hempstead Lake Park For Rockville Centre residents, the great outdoors is just next door, thanks to Hempstead Lake State Park. The home of Hempstead Lake — the largest body of fresh water in Nassau County — the park has the lake, with a perimeter of three miles, as well as four ponds. The lake is open to kayaks and car-top boats, with an annual permit. Hempstead Lake, as well as McDonald Pond and South Pond, are stocked with trout year-round for fishing. Other species include large mouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, perch, tiger muskies, carp and sunfish. There's more to the park than just the lake. Hempstead Lake State Park has 20 tennis courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas and its historic, hand-carved wooden carousel. There are trails for horseback riding, hiking and biking. The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The entrance is on Lakeside Drive. For more information, call the park office at (516) 766-1029.

Sandel Senior Center 50 South Park Ave. 678-9350 The Sandel Senior Center provides Rockville Centre’s older adults with a multipurpose facility that promotes life satisfaction through programs and activities, volunteer and civic participation, and meaningful social engagement. A full schedule of classes, programs and activities is offered, including fitness, arts, computer lessons, discussion groups, workshops, special events, parties, guest speakers and trips. Transportation and meals are offered daily. Sandel volunteers provide service to the senior center as well as the Rockville Centre community. Indeed, volunteerism is often called the “heart” of the Sandel Center. Volunteers provide homework help at the library,
serve as friendly visitors and callers for homebound seniors, act as ambassadors at Village Hall and serve on committees that organize special events, trips, intergenerational programs and more at the center. A professional social work department provides assistance with Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), HEAP (fuel rebate), Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage and other benefit programs. The department provides information and referrals to families regarding housing, transportation, hom ecare and the many other complicated issues faced when caring for aging loved ones. In addition, the social work staff link village residents with resources in the larger community. The department continues to help residents lower their drug costs as well. National studies show that a majority of seniors overpay on average $500 annually for prescription medication because of a lack of information on how to go about evaluating and changing drug plans. Social work consultations save Rockville Centre seniors thousands of dollars annually. The Sandel Center is a role model on national and local levels for other agencies that serve senior citizens. It was previously reaccredited by the NCOA (National Council on Aging) and NISC (National Institute of Senior Centers) and remains the only senior center on Long Island to achieve both of these prestigious designations. The Sandel Center remains committed to its goal to support independence, encourage life satisfaction and promote vital aging for older residents now and into the future.

The Rockville Centre Fire Department was recently honored for helping save a woman who was struck by an SUV last year.
The Rockville Centre Fire Department is the largest volunteer department in New York
state. The members of the department meet regularly to train, drill, and to ready their apparatus and equipment for alarms. Training is held on both the company and department levels, and is coordinated by the department’s board of instruction. Collectively, volunteers put in 500
hours each week to train and prepare for emergencies. The department operates more than 20 pieces of equipment, including an aerial ladder truck, a tower ladder truck, five engines, an antique engine, a heavy rescue truck, two ambulances, an EMS first response vehicle and more. nassau CounTy Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which comprises members from 19 districts. Town of hempsTead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
