On Monday, June 7, at 7 p.m., Freeport resident Tom Phelan will be one of four authors reading from their works at the annual Summer Gazebo Readings, Schoolhouse Green, 145A Merle Ave., Oceanside, NY. Phelan is a retired employee of the Garden City Public Schools. His business, Glanvil Enterprises, is at 237 Church St. in Freeport. Phelan, who was born and reared in County Laois, Ireland, will read a selection or two from his latest book, “We Were Rich and We Didn’t Know It: A Memoir of My Irish Boyhood.”
Newsday says “We Were Rich” is “a wonderful memoir.... the real thing.” Minneapolis Star Tribune says, “Phelan’s memoir of his boyhood is exceptional...Phelan’s prose has an unpretentious beauty...with rich detail and sensitivity, ‘We Were Rich’ translates for us a rural world that has disappeared.” This event, which is free, raises funds through sponsorships to send underprivileged children to Kamp Kiwanis, run by the Kiwanis of New York State. The readings are held outside. Bring a chair. You can read more about Tom Phelan at tomphelan.net.

Author donates books to Freeport Memorial Library Deborah Stephney, a Freeport resident, has donated two of her published books to the Freeport Memorial Library. The stories center on a delightful boy named Simon. Simon’s Alphabet Adventure tells of Simon’s quest to find all the letters of the alphabet after a dreadful storm blows them away. In Simon Saves
the Land of Coloroo, a horrible wizard has drained the land of Coloroo of all its colors. Only Simon can reverse the dreadful enchantment. Both are picture books, pre-K to first grade, with lively illustrations by authorillustrator Charles Berton.
