PSEG Long Island is thrilled to once again sponsor the Herald’s Long Island Choice Awards. We encourage you to nominate your favorite local business so they get some added publicity as we enter the spring season.

Why does PSEG Long Island care about local businesses?

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, they account for about 44% of our national economic activity. Locally, on Long Island, they are our economic backbone. Roughly 90% of the businesses here are small or medium-sized. Supporting small businesses means keeping our local commercial districts thriving, which optimizes electric usage in our communities.

PSEG Long Island has been supporting small businesses since 2018 with economic development grants and other incentives that keep local commercial districts thriving.

In one recent case, we provided an $18,750 economic development grant from our Main Street Revitalization Program to help a new brewery revitalize an empty downtown space.

Moriches Field Brewing Company opened in October 2020 in a space adjacent to the Long Island Rail Road tracks that was previously a baseball training facility. Because the space was vacant for more than a year, the brewery qualified for PSEG Long Island Vacant Space Revival Program discounts, which will save the owner more than $4,000 on his electric bills. An additional $770 in lighting rebates was given to him for replacing inefficient lighting fixtures in the building with LEDs.

When the pandemic struck, small businesses faced their greatest challenge in at least a decade amid diminished foot traffic and new safety measures. Rising to the moment, PSEG Long Island increased our small business support efforts with targeted grants, supporting local chambers of commerce and business improvement districts in their efforts to provide outdoor seating and signage to create a safe shopping and dining experience for their customers.

In the past five years PSEG Long Island has committed more than $2 million to economic development grants and incentives across Long Island and the Rockaways. You can see the results of our economic development grants in communities all across Nassau County: thriving small businesses like Rosario’s Pizzeria, founded in Brooklyn in 1980 and now proudly operating in Seaford; K-Fit Studio, a boutique gym in Valley Stream, and Noble Savage Brewing in Glen Cove, which offers small-batch beers made with New York-grown grains.

We have also provided beautification grants of up to $2,000 to many local chambers of commerce to enhance the visual appeal of shopping districts, and you can already see the results all across Nassau County. The Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District used their grant money to string lights throughout the town to make it more feasible for patrons to walk around the downtown area in the evening, especially on the nights they close off the downtown and have music and dining in the street. The Baldwin Chamber of Commerce used their grant for a “Welcome to Baldwin” sign.
