The winner of the Government Building category in The Office Building of the Year (TOBY) 2009 BOMA Canada National Awards is the Red River Road Government Building, which is located at 189 Red River Road in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Red River Road Government Building is owned by the Ontario Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and managed by Ontario Realty Corporation. It was built in 1990, and renovated in 2005 and 2009. The building sits on 1.67 acres of land near the Thunder Bay waterfront, and overlooks Marina Park, Lake Superior, and the Sleeping Giant (a local landmark). The building consists of four storeys, topped by two penthouses that contain the building’s HVAC system, and a total square footage of 213,259 square feet. The majority of the building is government office space. The remainder of the space consists of a two-level underground parking garage and common areas. The building exterior is finished with granite veneer, metal panels, and glazed curtain walls and windows. The roof system is a ballasted single-ply EPDM membrane.
