SAC welcomes you to CONSAC – ImageMakers 2011
W
ell another year has passed and Consac is once again upon us. After the 2009 economic slowdown negatively impacted that year’s Consac, we had a lot of work to get done to try and return the show to a size similar to that of 2008.
2010 was a huge success due to Sherri and Just’s hard work. Sherri and her team were determined to surpass that, and make 2011 the best year ever. To date, we are on track to better our best year in 2008. We have really focused in on increasing both our membership retention numbers as well as adding new members. I am pleased to report SAC’s membership is at an all time high for 2011. Fiscally we are in excellent shape and have rebounded very well from 2009’s difficulties. We have just completed our 2010 Audit and the results have shown a marked improvement with all indicators that 2011 will be a banner year. Our major goal this year was to determine how to make SAC a truly National organization. A special task force was formed with Bob Mattatall and Michele Spénard as co-chairs. Both have been working on this undertaking for several months and they soon plan to review the results and determine how best to improve SAC’s overall mechanics. We can expect to see some changes in the way SAC operates in the very near future. We are also in the final throws of reviewing our bylaws. A committee, spearheaded by Peter Brimmer, has been working hard on this review. We are nearing the point of completion and getting ready to send it to our lawyer for final review. Just has been working on several areas surrounding legislative issues which include; National efforts on municipal bylaws across Canada, National efforts on the subject of mercury use, regulations pertaining to our industry and National efforts on the topic of electrical inspections and certification rules. These efforts are all done through fantastic committees set up by each region approaching their local municipalities, getting involved in municipal committees and in many cases the municipalities contacting us directly. A great National committee working with Environment Canada on the topic of mercury has ensured that our industry can continue to use Cold Cathode, fluorescent, metal halide and mercury vapour lamps in our signage by getting these products exempted from the banned mercury containing products listing. The next phase being worked on is the recycling of end of life lamps and tubes. The technical committee continues its efforts on understanding the changes to Batch Certification and the new rules affecting many companies across Canada. Our attempts to ease the concerns of inspectors on mixed certifications, LED’s, site installs etc continues. If you have an issue in your region you would like us to look into, please do not hesitate to contact our offices. All in all it has been a very positive year. Despite dealing with several challenges, we are working through each one with very good results, thanks to the great support we have received from the board. On a final note, I would like to advise that I will be stepping down as President this year. I have held the post for four years and feel the time has come to step aside and allow some new blood to impart new ideas to this great association. At this time, I would like to sincerely thank the board for all their support. I especially want to thank Sherri, Just and Franca for putting up with me and doing such a wonderful job while ensuring we keep moving forward in a positive manner. Dave has recently been elected to serve on the International Sign Associations Board Of Directors for the 2011 - 2013 term. Dave also holds the position of Co-Chair, Suppliers Division for ISA Supplier Distributor Annual Conference as well as being a member of the ISA Architectural Sub Committee. Offering ADA signage at your sign shop will increase your profits. But you need more than a well-developed marketing plan to be successful in this area. Success in the ADA signage is directly related to how much you and your employees know about ADA laws and guidelines. This interactive course will educate the attendee about current ADA requirements as it relates to ADA compliant signage for those with disabilities. You will also learn about the most commonly used materials while gaining an understanding as to why the correct material used is as important as the message. If the material used fails then the message is lost. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: • Answer the question “What is the ADA”Know where to find regulations relating to ADA compliance • Identify areas of a building that require ADA compliant signage • Manufacture a photopolymer sign and understand photopolymer applications and technical characteristics.

Denis Pineault has been an employee of the Federal Government since 1999 and worked in various sectors including Environment Canada. Since 2008, Mr. Pineault has been the Head of the Mercury Program within the Waste Reduction and Management Division of Environment Canada. With over 116 tonnes of end of life mercury containing lamps already in landfills and an expectation to grow above the 68 million lamps sold in 2006 due to the Energy Efficiency Regulations, the Waste Reduction and Management Division of Environment Canada has been working on developing risk management instruments to reduce mercury releases to the environment from new and end-of-life products. On February 26, 2011 Environment Canada published the proposed Regulations on the import, manufacture & sale of mercury-containing products with some exemptions for essential products which have no viable alternatives such as cold cathode tubing used for signage. The proposed regulations will require labeling, reporting, and in some cases mercury content limits for those products exempt. This important seminar will examine this regulation and the compliance requirements that will be imposed on all importers and manufacturers and the objectives set by Environment Canada to divert lamps from landfills.

Presented by: Lee Hewitt is the Principal Engineer for Signs, Sign Components, and Retrofit Kits for Signs at Underwriters Laboratories (UL). He has technical responsibility for UL 48, Standard for Electric Signs; UL 879, Standard for Electric Sign Components; 879A, Outline of Investigation for LED Retrofit Kits for Signs, and UL 2161, Standard for Neon Transformers and Power Supplies. Lee has written articles covering safety requirements for signs in the US and Canada, including the most current requirements developed for LED signs. He also represents UL on the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70 Code Panel 18 covering the electrical installation requirements in the US for signs and luminaires. This seminar will provide an overview of UL's comprehensive Electric Sign Certification Program. Working with sign manufacturers and industry associations, UL created a program designed to maximize flexibility for the sign manufacturers to create custom designs and/or make design changes while insuring full compliance to all safety requirements. This insightful seminar will cover the basic program elements of • Technical Training of sign shop staff • UL48 Electric Sign Standard for Safety • Required construction documentation • Sign component program and component selection tools • Conformance validation records to facilitate UL Follow Up Audits. The presentation will show how all the elements work together to provide a thorough certification program that permits sign shops to work within broad design parameters while insuring compliance to all Canadian safety standard requirements.
