A
t the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) established a help desk to provide design assistance to countries and contacted the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE), an official WHO partner, for technical support. The IFHE community responded, identifying a pool of more than 150 potential volunteers, including architects and engineers, across 19 teams, who were tasked with quickly developing plans for COVID-19 facilities and ultimately designed dozens of projects. The WHO subsequently evolved the COVID-19 help desk into the Téchne, the technical science for health network, of which IFHE is a member. IFHE volunteer teams continue to support WHO with assistance beyond COVID-19 support.
