The Science Behind Pixar
S
ay hello to Buzz Lightyear, WALL-E, Dory and more life-size characters in The Franklin Institute’s latest exhibit, The Science Behind Pixar. The equally educational, fun and stunning exhibit offers more than 40 interactive elements split up into eight sections: rigging, sets and cameras, rendering, animations, modeling, surfaces, simulation and lighting. The different sections allow visitors to uniquely interact and understand how Pixar innovators create the images you see on the big screen. Educationally, The Science Behind Pixar does an incredible job of breaking down complex science, engineering, technology and math through short informational videos from real production teams at Pixar. Learn why it takes an average of 29 hours to render one frame in Pixar movies or how the production pipeline moves from artists to sculptors to digital animation. How did Pixar make the water in Finding Nemo feel so real? How do they make hair on characters flow in the wind? How long does it take for 1.5 million pixels to render? Find the answers to these questions and more. You’ll appreciate your favorite Pixar movies more than you ever thought you could. Take a look through the A Bug’s Life camera where blades of grass become a neverending jungle, trees become overarching giants and leaves look like stained colored glass. The camera moves up and down and left to right to simulate
low angle views. It allowed Pixar to gain valuable information when designing the sets. Design your own grass on the screen using plot points to create 3-D images of whatever your imagination desires, while learning how Pixar uses depth and height to create so many objects characters use. Other stations include the “Face Rigging Workstation,” “Lighting Design Basics” and “Animation.” Play around with different levers on each one to move characters’ eyes and arms or recreate Carl Fredricksen’s lighting in his home from Up. The power is in the hands of the visitor and turns this exhibit into a “work at Pixar for a day” experience. Take note of the splattered concept art throughout the display of scenes from various movies. Short and surprising facts are tucked away everywhere so keep your eyes peeled. Did you know in early sketches Woody from Toy Story was originally a ventriloquist’s dummy? How do they get Sulley’s 2.3 million hairs to all move according to the laws of physics? The art and facts offer rare insight into the marvelous movies which so many of us have grown up with. So prepare for large doses of nostalgia.

Whether it was planned this way or not, Philadelphia native Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” is arguably the most talked about dance song of the last five years. The producer and DJ’s track went viral online, leading to countless videos of people ridiculously dancing to the song. itus Andronicus continues their punk-filled No Faith/No Future/ No Problem tour in Philadelphia on March 27 at Union Transfer. With four rockin’ albums to their name and their latest one, The Most Lamentable Tragedy, garnering the most success, Titus Andronicus is a must-see talent. We spoke with frontman and lyricist, Patrick Stickles about their constant touring, what’s next for the band and his personal struggles with depression.
Do you have any good memories from playing in Philly in the past? Oh, sure. We played there a whole bunch times over the years. I can remember our first show. It must have been in 2008 at the Circle of Hope. Since then we played at The Barbary several times then the First Unitarian Church we played many times.
Do you see that there’s hope in the ending, a rebirth, or is it just purely tragedy in The Most Lamentable Tragedy?
Well, there’s always hope. At the end of our story, our character realizes the cyclical nature of like. He discovers the moral that whatever you experience, whether it be the most ecstatic happiness, or the most crushing despair. All these things are just moments in time, naturally they’re all impermanent and they all will pass. I’ve found that in life when you acknowledge this, it will help you to endure the hard times and cherish the good times. Life is just a sequence of moments. Knowing that hopefully makes it a little easier to not get bogged down in you despair or to get too cocky and arrogant in your extreme happiness.
Is touring exhausting? Not to put it down, but the live show isn’t necessarily the most creative thing. When we get up on stage what cords we’re going to play and I know what words I’m going to say. All of that stuff is kind of memorized. But at the same time you have to go into it thinking it’s not just a recital. You’ve got to find a way to infuse it with new life and make it feel like a moment of creation. That’s the trick of it, keeping it alive that way, keeping it breathing.
you say this is your last record?
you deal with some pretty heavy topics most of the time, what are the fun moments for you, what do you do when you have that free time?
Well in so much as every record could potentially be the last record. That really is largely up to our constituents, the degree to which they continue to support us kind of dictates how long we’ll be able to keep going and making records and playing concerts and whatnot. We can’t do it without the support of our audience.
Well we don’t really have that much free time. When we do, it’s my preference to sleep in and catch up on rest. We don’t do a terrible amount of sightseeing or anything like that. The life is mostly about driving, getting from place to place and then we’ve got to set everything up. So everyday is the same in a lot ways. If we do anything for fun on the

road, I would say it’s doing the concerts.
you’ve talked about your struggles a lot, do you think that is helpful to people? I certainly hope so, that’s my intent because I have found it very helpful for certain artists to reach out that way. Artists kind of send out a message in a bottle in a sense, that says “If you feel the way that I feel, you’re not maybe as alone as you think you are.” A lot of these things don’t get discussed that much and a lot of people don’t get the support that they need. That would be the more public service of the band’s career. A lot of people have come up to me and said that we’ve served that purpose for them. That feels really good. Again, it’s been provided for me in the past when I was feeling alone and alienated, so it’s kind of a way to pay off that debt to those artists that have been there for me. n
