WELCOME TO 2023!

As we close the chapter on 2022, we can take the time to reflect on everything that we are grateful for, what we accomplished, and what we look forward to in the coming year.

For this issue we chose supermodel Marianne Fonseca, a fellow Sagittarian who epitomizes the traits of this fiery astrological sign -a natural born explorer that is inherently optimistic and idealistic. Though her modeling career took her around the globe, she always reverted to her beauty regime that she grew up with in Brazil which she was missing in the US market. Hence her new beauty line, Gente, was born and launched in the US. Gente, Portuguese for people, uses native Brazilian ingredients for proven effective results to minimize the appearance cellulite and reap the benefits of lymphatic drainage on a cellular level. Here she tells us of her fascinating story from supermodel to launching a beauty brand. Our holiday fashion editorial was inspired by the iconic style maven and force of fashion, Grace Coddington, which was brought to life by stylist Fredo Montes and shot by James Weber.

With the holidays in full swing, we had winter travel on our minds as we featured some of the world’s best hotels to visit in 2023 along with exciting winter getaways for this season. Our Resident Picks section also highlighted some of our favorite new dining destinations of NYC and Miami to whet your appetite.

As we look forward to ushering in 2023, our cover star Marianne Fonseca gave us some sage advice to live by, “Everyday, be the best version of the person you are, but also live in the moment, because we are only good for the day.”

MARIANNE FONSECA

Brazilian Supermodel Turned Beauty Entrepreneur

Modeling since she was 15, Brazilian native Marianne Fonseca has been a formidable force in the fashion industry gracing the covers of fashion heavyweights such as Bazaar, Grazia, L’Officiel, and has been the face of international luxury brands such as Lancome, Hugo Boss and Dior. But modeling was merely a stepping stone to her true passion of bringing the beauty secrets of Brazil to the world. As Marianne’s modeling career has taken her around the world, she noticed that the US lacked body care products that were readily available in Brazil. By partnering with Nathalia Maia, who had expertise in launching natural Brazilian beauty brands in the US, together they launched Gente, Portuguese for “people.” Together they have created an innovative Brazilian based body care treatment that uses clinically proven formulas for lymphatic drainage and the reduction of cellulite appearance, something that everyone can use!

RM: Tell us about your new body care line, Gente, and what makes it different than anything else in the US market

MF: Gente translates to people and this body care treatment is for everyday use for everyonemen and women at every age and body shape. In Brazil we are mixed, and I want to show we should celebrate our differences. This is what

makes us more beautiful. Our campaign features women with different types of bodies, color, ages, and sizes. I wanted to also show that models, like everyone else, also have cellulite, and we can only be the best version of ourselves.

In Brazil, lymphatic drainage treatments are common and readily available. And in the US, it's very expensive to get this treatment. I realized there was a lack of lymphatic drainage body care treatments in the US. I wanted to create a body treatment that people can maintain at home.

I've been doing this since I'm 13 years old and I know how to talk about it and how it works. If you watch our videos on our Instagram and website, you can see that if you do the lymphatic drainage movements in the right way, you can achieve similar results from going to a professional at home.

We also created the Bye Bye Cellulite treatment that targets cellulite. These formulas were developed combining natural ingredients and powerful actives that can penetrate into deep layers of your skin and target specific areas. You will see results in the firmness and smoothness of your skin in 28-32 days, and by this time your cells will have enough time to regenerate.

resident.com | 27
Photos by Matteo Prandoni/BFA.com

Initially there will be a tingling sensation because there is an active molecular ingredient that we bought from Monaco which targets that fat cell, and you feel the burn. If you use this during a workout you will see that you sweat more and there’s a lot of things happening in your body. The results also depend on the diet you follow and how well you sleep. I never want to sell like a fake dream to anyone, but I think if you are consistent with your body care routine, you will see results.

NM: Brazilians have a very solid and popular body care routine. The biggest beauty market players in Brazil are body care focused brands. This generated a huge expertise and advantage on the segment: from consumer insight to formula and technology development. Gente has a mission to build a strong educational platform to talk about how you can achieve great results - aesthetic and health benefits - with cosmetic products made for your body.

RM: What types of ingredients are indigenous to Brazil that you don't typically find in the US?

NM: Guarana: Native to Amazon, Guarana is a powerful antioxidant with a stimulating effect that facilitates lipolysis and supports metabolism, making it a powerful weapon against "orange peel" skin.

28 | resident.com
COVER | RESIDENT

Acai: The vibrant anthocyanin in acai is a mighty source of flavonoids with antioxidant powers to target cellulite pockets and break down pesky fat cells lodged in connective tissue.

Cacau - Cacao also improves the appearance of cellulite by firming the skin and breaking down adipose tissue.

RM: What do you see as the future for Gente?

NM:. Gente provides an amazing sensorial experience with high level technology, powerful ingredients, and an affordable price point. We are planning to have a portfolio with a complete body care routine with native products and ingredients that come from the Amazon.

RM: How would you describe your personal style?

MF: I love fashion and I love dressing up sexy with a mix of tomboy. I can go from comfortable sweats to a party dress or something outra-

geous. I love Balenciaga and Saint Laurent but also David Koma in London. I think my style is a mix of everything.

RM: What are some of the most memorable moments you've had modeling?

MF: I think there are a lot of moments in modeling that were important, but the shows and magazines are the most memorable. When I see myself on the cover of a magazine, that never gets old, because it's such a special thing to be chosen for the cover. Magazines are very important, because they push the limits in fashion, with the wardrobe with the makeup and the story that is being told there. Fashion shows are exciting because of how fast they happen but there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the shows.

RM: What was the highlight of New York Fashion Week for you?

MF: This time I came to New York, not just as a model, but as an entrepreneur to launch the

resident.com | 29

brand in the biggest city in the world during NYFW and see people’s reaction to the product. I also worked the shows, which is always amazing.

RM: I read that your birth sign is Sagittarius, do you feel that you possess the traits of your astrological sign?

MF: I am a Sagittarius, my rising is also Sagittarius, and my moon is in Aries. Everything is fire in my chart. So yes, I love traveling and exploring new things. I love being free and helping others. I think that's one of the reasons why I created the brand because I wanted women to feel confident even though they have cellulite, or they're older, younger, curvier, or whatever. I wanted people to feel better about themselves. I think that reflects how Sagittarians think, as they are very free and just go with the flow. I also have four houses in Capricorn and the hard work comes from that, because I am a workaholic. There's a balance of both, I have a very fun and fast lifestyle, but I am very grounded in what I want. Those two things combined have helped the brand grow to where it is now, and this is just the beginning.

RM: What advice would you give to younger women today?

MF: If I could go back in time, I would try to tell myself, “Don't overthink too much. Respect the moment that you are living now, because every moment is an important buildup of who you're going to become later.” These days, we are expected to plan so much and have it all figured out. It’s okay to not have everything figured out. You have so much time to explore. I'm 32 and I'm starting my company now. There is never a perfect time to start something or not. Be confident in who you are. Learn that every day, be the best version of the person you are but also, live in the moment, because we are only good for the day. That's why we go to bed at night and shut down our brain, and then when we are prepared for another day.

The Hamptons Has Flown South and arrived at SOUTHWEST RANCHES

Southwest Ranches Fla., is THE value proposition for ultra-high-net-worth people

As pricing continues to rise and inventory remains low across South Florida, high ticket buyers are looking beyond the intracoastal and usual ultra-luxury zip codes, while staying within reach of the important metro hubs of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca. It’s a trend that’s turning suburban heavens like Southwest Ranches into Hamptons-style hideaways.

The Town of Southwest Ranches, a low-density, quaint equestrian community in Broward County is a favorite hideaway for sophisticated, in-the-known estate level property hunters.

Sales in Southwest Ranches have heated up as the area gains traction with high-net-worth buyers looking for privacy, value, acreage and world-class estates within the regions remaining farmland. Homes, custom made on order, rarely hit the market in the town, shielding prices from the public. But recently, custommade estate 11 acres, built by Landmark Custom Homes, hit the market there at $54 million, demonstrating the area’s unprecedented price growth.

Landmark Custom Homes, the area’s leading luxury home builder, is behind most of these prominent estates, and offers turn-key building services via bespoke architectural designs from world class firms including Affiniti Architects of Palm Beach, Choeff Levy Fischman and CMA Design Studios in Miami. Landmark Ranch Estates is composed of just 44 estate sites, ranging from 2 to 5 acres. Now, just five custom estate home sites remain available, with estate designs ranging in price from $8 million to over $30 million.

Residents of Landmark Ranch Estates, the most prominent luxury estate community in Southwest Ranches have included “A list” Hollywood celebrities and top tier athletes as well as entrepreneurs and C-suite execs from varied business sectors.

“Southwest Ranches represents an unparalleled value proposition for ultra-high-net-worth people,” says Douglas Elliman’s Miguel Serrano, noting that the area is close to the region’s two most used executive airports: Ft Lauderdale

32 | resident.com REAL ESTATE | RESIDENT

Executive and Opa Locka Executive. “It’s like a Hamptons lifestyle in an almost unknown, secret location, and thanks to strict preservation rules that prevents future over-development it's going to stay that way. The town’s informal motto is ‘The pavement stops here!’”

“A community like this can never be created again in Southwest Ranches,” says Rick Bell, owner of Landmark Custom Homes, who envisioned this area as one of the last bastions of rolling acreage in the whole tri-county area, buying some 150 acres nearly two decades ago prior to the town’s incorporation.

The World's BEST NEW LUXURY HOTELS OF 2022

Where are the best places to travel in 2023? That’s the question Resident discussed to a set of hospitality experts, and their answers are quite literally all over the world. Several top spots are deservedly taken by boutique properties, smaller-scale brands, and one-off projects created by truly passionate owners. Below are the 15 Top Resident Picks on where to go in 2023, from an up-and-coming Punta Mita, to beautiful towns in Italy, to far away locations that you may need to add to your bucket list.

Here is the BEST OF 2023 – in reverse order:.

34 | resident.com TRAVEL | RESIDENT

15. Nobu, Santorini

There is certainly a trend developing within the Nobu hotels, and a continued global expansion. Their city properties continue to mostly underwhelm us, but the beach locations tend to deliver the upscale and chic lifestyle experience the brand is known for. This particular property proved a real hit in Santorini this summer and for good reason. It ticks all the boxes. santorini.nobuhotels.com

This welcoming boutique hotel sits in a 19th century mansion and has opulent suites and bedrooms, creative cuisine and Italian charm in spades. The 13 suites and three bedrooms are designed with ultimate luxury in mind. verona.vistapalazzo.com

13. Buahan, Bali

The first property from Banyan Tree Escapes, a brand extension from this much loved operator, focuses on creating immersive experiences that combine deep nature and sustainable design. Just 15 totally secluded 'no walls, no doors' villas surrounded by rice paddies and jungle, deliver a very different experience. escape.banyantree.com

12. The Outpost, Qatar

Putting aside the ongoing and very unfortunate situation we discovered for many newly opened luxury hotels in Doha (another story for another day), this new resort, that’s due to officially open in the next few days, is embedded in the unique Inland Sea nature reserve, and ready to provide a one-of-a-kind luxury experience celebrating Qatar’s rich natural environment and heritage. Surrounded by soaring sand dunes and desert wilderness, each of the very private 21 tented villas deliver an authentic nature experience, blended with the expected flourishes of luxury hospitality. theoutpostalbarari.com

14. Vista Palazzo, Verona

11. Banyan Tree AlUla, Saudi Arabia

The second Banyan Tree property to make this year’s list is this all-villa resort offering 79 luxurious tented villas in one of the world's most mysterious and exciting new destinations. Infused with elements from the nomadic nature of Nabataean design and heritage, the resort offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas with private pools and outdoor living space, showcasing stunning views of the rock formations in the Ashar Valley. www.banyantree.com/saudi-arabia/alula

10. Cali, Mykonos

A discreet collection of 40 stunning villa suites between two mountains overlooking the Aegean – and the hotel’s own private beach. The salt water infinity pool also significantly adds to the wow factor. calimykonos.com

9. Alila Kothaifaru, Maldives

It would be strange for a new Maldives property not to make our annual list, such is the rate of continued investment in creating exclusive and ultra luxury resorts in this very special part of the world. This year Alila Kothaifaru, with 80 villas (all with pools) certainly gets our vote. www.alilahotels.com/ kothaifaru-maldives

8. Hotel Barriere Fouquet's, New York

This 97-room property brings a new level of sophistication to the bustling streets of New York, mixing Parisian opulence with Tribeca panache – unlike the recently unveiled New York Aman, which despite the huge investment and pre opening anticipation, leaves us cold.

7. Gleneagles Townhouse, Edinburgh

The iconic Gleneagles sporting and country estate has arrived in the very heart of Edinburgh. Outstanding architectural features are found throughout the charming urban retreat, with each room uniquely designed to imbue a sense of understated luxury with an appreciative nod to the heritage of the building. A wellness centre, two striking bars and a rooftop terrace with extraordinary city views complete this new Edinburgh gem. www.gleneagles.com/townhouse

5. Naviva Four Seasons Resort, Punta Mita

This just opened luxury tented resort is as unique as nature itself, welcoming guests to a world where the deep, green jungle is the backdrop for a profoundly personalised retreat. With just 15 luxury tents surrounded by 48 forested acres on the edge of a private peninsula, Naviva is an adult-only sanctuary that harnesses nature to create an environment that fosters community, personal growth and appreciation for local heritage. www.fourseasons.com/naviva/

6. The Club House at Fontanelle Estate, Tuscany

We are so pleased to have discovered this new and off the radar gem during our recent Tuscany research trip. It has just 15 understated and elegant rooms and suites, an impressive wellness sanctuary, three restaurants, golf facilities and a beautiful pool, all surrounded by the tranquillity of the stunning Tuscan vineyards and rolling countryside. Exceptional. www.fontanellestate.com/en/the-clubhouse-en

4. Rosewood, Vienna

Housed in a grandly proportioned neoclassical building, Rosewood Vienna is ideally situated on Petersplatz, one of the most famous squares in Vienna’s Old Town. Combining the best of European architecture and design with a refined yet modern style, there are 99 guestrooms and suites, all of which feature separate spaces for entertainment and relaxation. We love the rooftop cocktail bar with exceptional views of the city. www.rosewoodhotels.com/ en/vienna

38 | resident.com

3. Susurros del Corazon, Punta Mita

Auberge Resorts, rated No3 in this year’s LTI World’s Best Luxury Hotel Brands, rarely puts a foot wrong – and once again they have delivered a luxury beachfront playground for the free-spirited. Each of the 59 rooms and suites and 30 villas and homes offer indoor-outdoor spaces with private terraces and large, nature-framing windows. Abundant sunlight, natural wood furniture and artisanal textiles capture the raw simplicity of the location and spotlight Mexico’s rich craft culture. aubergeresorts.com/susurros

2. Stanly Ranch, Napa Valley

Yet another impressive opening from Auberge Resorts, with two new properties appearing in this year’s World’s Best list. Set on over 700 acres of rolling vineyards and farmland in the southern section of Napa Valley’s wine-growing region, the resort has 135 airy, cottage guestrooms, all with outdoor terraces with fire pits and views of the Mayacamas Mountains. aubergeresorts.com/stanlyranch/

… and the WORLD'S BEST NEW LUXURY HOTEL 2022 is:

1. Passalacqua, Lake Como

Passalacqua is the latest passion project for one of Italy’s most well-known hotelier families – Paolo, Antonella and Valentina De Santis. As the sister property to the lake’s Grand Hotel Tremezzo – one of the world’s most iconic hotels – it offers total privacy and magnificence, with 24 suites, including the largest suite on Lake Como where Bellini played his piano. The bathrooms are extraordinary, with sheets of marble that are like works of art. This is a place of wonder created from the heart, by a family who have an ambition to give life to a new Lake Como icon. It honours the past but it’s relevant for the centuries ahead. www.passalacqua.it/en

Next to The Library you will find one of the best places in San Antonio to enjoy an old fashioned, espresso martini or whatever cocktail your heart desires. The Sternewirth Tavern & Club Room features a dramatic 25-foot vaulted ceiling which soars over groupings of sofas, easy chairs and banquettes arranged to encourage conversation and celebration. Grab your spot and your drink to bask in the glow of another massive fireplace.

The bar is named for the Sternewirth Privilege, which entitled employees of 19th Century breweries to free beer during the workday. Prohibition killed the tradition, except at Pearl Brewery, where workers frequented the taproom until the 1990’s.

Matched with Hotel Emma’s distinctive historical ambiance and modern allure, Supper offers delicious American cooking and service at any time of day. This curated culinary experience is rooted in San Antonio’s heritage and inspired by the frontier spirit of its people, landscapes, and products, always with an eye toward the future. A few of our personal favorites were the pimento cheese, broiled oysters, hot smoked salmon, gulf snapper adobo and the bone-in berkshire pork chop.

Hotel Emma offers a wide range of rooms and experiences. From the extraordinary rooms in the original Brewhouse tower to the subtle luxuries of the more contemporary River Cellars, every stay at Hotel Emma can be a revelation. Suites offer pleasing features such as private dining areas, two-story terraces and original stonework and vaulted ceilings. Custom-designed furniture and original artwork will make you feel both at home and wholly in another place as you enjoy your time at Hotel Emma.

Other amenities at the hotel include a rooftop pool and bar, fitness center and jewelry store on the first floor. The hotel is tucked into the Pearl, a magnificent plaza on the historic Riverwalk. Take in your surroundings with a relaxing walk along the water, bask in the sun in the courtyard or enjoy the sights and sounds of the local farmers market every weekend. NEMACOLIN Expect the Unexpected

When visiting Nemacolin, the luxury palatial resort in the Laurel Highlands region of Pennsylvania be prepared to “expect the unexpected” said Amanda Shane the hotel’s Art Director; a statement that is true in every sense. Within this sprawling 2,000-acre estate you could have a bespoke wedding, couple’s trip, or winter getaway like none other. Whether it be their world-class Spa and Holistic Healing Center, Golf Course designed by the legendary Pete Dye and home of the Pennsylvania Classic from 2003-2006, Twenty-five acres of ski and snowboard slopes at The Peak, one of their eclectic signature experiences, or the staff’s dedication to making your visit one of a kind- your trip is limited by your imagination.

Those who follow reality shows may recall Nemacolin as the location for season twentyfive of ABC’s “The Bachelor” featuring football player Matt James who gave his final rose to 24-year-old graphic designer Rachael Kirkconnell. Fans of the show will surely recognize the facade of the resort’s opulent Chateau building, inspired by the Ritz in Paris hotel. The architecture of Nemacolin, which embarked on a $30 million resort-wide renovation in 2014, is a story unto itself. The resort is just 10 miles from Fallingwater famously built above a waterfall and designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Falling Rock, a hotel building on the property and one of their newest buildings, was designed by a student of Wright.

48 | resident.com TRAVEL | RESIDENT

Nemacolin’s story begins in 1949 when Pittsburgh industrialist Willard F. Rockwell purchased the initial sixty acres of what is now Nemacolin. In 1968, after accumulating more land, Rockwell established the Nemacolin Trails Hunting Reserve, and the property was initially a refuge for him and his wealthy friends. In 1987, Joseph A. Hardy, III, founder of the 84 Lumber Company, set out to buy a few acres near a lake for his daughter Maggie who loved fishing. He instantly fell in love with Nemacolin and purchased it. What began as a thoughtful gift for his daughter turned into a lifetime project. Since 2002 Maggie and her son PJ Magerko have taken over Nemacolin and have expanded on Mr. Hardy’s vision of Nemacolin. Mr. Hardy, now well into his late 90s, still resides on the property near the Wildlife Academy and has a standing appointment at the Holistic healing center for his cryotherapy sessions. In 2021 the resort became a member-only destination.

The property’s diverse architecture ensures that you don’t get the same cookie-cutter look and opens the door to a vacation option that fits your style and needs. Each hotel building on the property has a unique vibe; there is the elegant Parisian-inspired Chateau home of the resort’s five Five-Diamond Restaurant Lautrec, art deco Falling Rock where all of the rooms include 24-hour butler service, The Lodge (closing for renovations on January 8th, 2023)a charmingly rustic option, or Nemacolin’s private Homes and Estates. Each room includes high-end toiletries, nine specialty pillow options, a bath

menu, and speakers built into the shower with Bluetooth technology for streaming music. Many of the rooms and suites have whirlpools, balconies, and stunning views of the well-manicured property.

If you are interested in having your Wedding at the resort, Nemacolin has a team dedicated to making your special day come together regardless of how intimate or grand you want the occasion to be. They have a resident Atelier, a catering department that gets fresh ingredients from local farms and some grown on the property, and they arrange entertainment and transportation. Or, if you aren’t much of a planner feel free to choose from one of their wedding packages. In June of this year the owner’s grandson, PJ Magerko, held a wedding featured in Vogue where he had 32 custom outfits

made. Photos included in the story were shot in The Bleu Room, an ultra-exclusive parlor hidden behind a secret door. Photos were also taken in the Chateau under one of the seemingly endless numbers of extravagant chandeliers hanging throughout the massive estate. Due to Nemacolin’s natural beauty and alluring design, it is naturally a popular destination for weddings and special events. Events can include anything from your signature drinks, you can consult with the resort’s in-house sommelier, or an event on the grounds of one of their signature Experiences.

Some of the most unique experiences are dog sledding where guests are taken on a ride throughout the property on a Touri Cart sled pulled by Nemacolin's very own sled dog team. Other Experiences include acupuncture, bour-

bon and wine tastings, and an airplane hanger with a fully restored and airworthy 931 Pitcairn PA-8 which was once in the collection of Hollywood icon Steve McQueen. Are you looking for a wildlife safari in the middle of Pennsylvania? Nemacolin has it! They have a collection of around 200 rescued animals. Take their Safari Tour and view an Icelandic sheep, a Bengal Tiger, African Lion, Mountain Lion, and a Bear, and they even have a White Buffalo where visitors leave gifts on the fence because they are viewed as good luck.

In addition to having a large animal collection, Nemacolin’s art collection is just as impressive. Much of the art comes from the family’s private collection and features works from artists like Andy Warhol and more. Reflections, a standalone art house offers scenic views and a col-

lection of fine contemporary art and sentimental memorabilia from the founder Joseph A. Hardy III. You can even find a hologram of the owner in the back room. The Woodland’s Auto Toy Store is a car lover’s dream featuring the Hardy family’s collection of rare and antique automobiles. All of the cars are for sale.

The resort is a member’s only and offers three levels of membership; “Resort”, “All-Access”, and “Corporate” — each with unique benefits and exclusive opportunities. As a member guests are entitled to golf privileges, access to the pools, and adventure activity options like zip lining, Jeep off-roading, tennis, cosmic bowling, and ax throwing. It also includes access to the resort art collection, sporting clay shooting, a health coach, complimentary chef's table seats, and discounts among many other things.

There are so many things that make this resort a must-visit destination as it is truly one of a kind and is home to things you might not expect. They even have a piece of the Berlin Wall, a recently restored historic Herschel Carousel, and even a display of the family’s collection of the family’s Hermes scarves. If you are planning to book a stay at the resort it should be a breeze as each guest gets complimentary airport shuttle service from Pittsburgh International Airport or you can land your private plane on their private and active runway strip. Their VIP membership concierge is there to handle all of the planning and details. Explore, have an adventure, and enjoy the stunning natural surroundings.

SAMUEL WAXMAN CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION 25TH ANNUAL COLLABORATING FOR A CURE GALA RAISES $4M

Honoring Two Giants in the Fight Against Cancer - Samuel Waxman, M.D. Chief Executive Officer and Founder, and Michael Nierenberg, Chairman of the Board, Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF)

The 25th Annual Collaborating for a Cure Gala, one of New York City’s favorite charity events celebrated its silver anniversary at Cipriani Wall Street. The “fun-raiser as opposed to fundraiser” as described by Michael Nierenberg raised more than $6 million towards the goal of funding the next five years of crucial SWCRF cancer research programs such as the Partnership for Aging and Cancer Research Program, the SWCRF Institute Without WallsTM, and the Women’s Cancer Research Program.

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is an international organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer. The Foundation is a pioneer in cancer research and its mission is to eradicate cancer by funding cutting-edge research that identifies and corrects abnormal gene function that causes cancer and develops minimally toxic treatments for patients. Through the Foundation’s collaborative group of world-class scientists, the Institute Without Walls, investigators share information and tools to speed the pace of cancer research. Since its inception in 1976, the Samuel Wax-

man Cancer Research Foundation has awarded more than $100 million to support the work of more than 200 researchers across the globe.

Following a cocktail reception across the street, guests made their way to the main dining room where emcee, CBS’s Chris Wragge, welcomed the more than 700 guests, introduced the evening’s honorees, and highlighted many of the Foundation’s groundbreaking achievements over the past 50 years. “Tonight, we have a great program to celebrate two giants in the fight against cancer”, said Wragge.

Upon receiving the Vision and Leadership Award, SWCRF Board Chairman Michael Nierenberg commented, “The real honorees are Dr. Waxman and the great heroes like him who treat and cure cancer every day.”

Founder and CEO Dr. Samuel Waxman, who received the well-deserved and long-overdue Lifetime Achievement Award, spoke to his vision (goal) for a future in which cancer does not have to be a disease associated with aging.

68 | resident.com EVENTS | RESIDENT

“The incidence of cancer is increasing, in part, as a by-product of improvements we are making in human longevity,” said Dr. Waxman. “But through our collaborative research programs, we can flatten this curve. I am thrilled to be a part of many amazing breakthroughs that have occurred in cancer research – with more to come.”

Special guest, author and breast cancer survivor, Musa Mayer, shared why she has been a longtime supporter of SWCRF and very generously offered a $1 million match for all donations made during the gala. “I will be celebrating my 80th birthday soon thanks to the work of this foundation and Dr. Samuel Waxman,” said Mayer.

As in previous years, the Collaborating for a Cure Gala included a live auction during the night’s festivities, including a meet and greet with MT. JOY, culinary experiences at the Cipriani Vault, il Buco Vita, and New York Vintners, and a Palm Bay Italian Winery experience (in Tuscany) to name a few. There was also a raffle for a private 7-day Bahamas cruise aboard an 82-foot, hybrid-powered, luxury yacht.

Notable attendees include SWCRF Board Chairman Michael Nierenberg, Founder and CEO Dr. Samuel Waxman, Gala Event Chairs, Spencer Waxman, Nicholas Santoro, Baron Silverstein, Marc Taub and Gala MC, Chris Wragge, Elin Nierenberg, Marion Waxman, Sandra Dugoff, Julie Waxman, Eliz Waxman, Jack Waxman, Sophia Bergan, Mario Pecoraro, Chris Arlotta, Mark D. Friedman, Jeremy Hoffman, Sara Waxman, Bettina Waxman, Scott Waxman, Bryan Griffin, Katya Tolstova, Nadja Sayej, William T. Sullivan, Erica Fineberg. A vegan dedicated to healthy eating, she has been active with the national non-profit organization Last Chance for Animals since 1989 and is the president of the New York non-profit group Animal Ashram, which she founded in 2013.

As she continues to develop her work as a philanthropist and involvement with these and other charities while exploring new dramatic roles, Leesa recently began adding something else exciting to her sizzle reel: comedienne. A lifelong sitcom fan, she has been taking comedy classes with Richard Kline - the actor best known as Larry on the late-1970s classic Three’s Company - in Los Angeles. She has also been studying improv and sketch comedy in New York at the famed Upright Citizen’s Brigade whose alumni include Amy Poehler, Horatio Sands, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh and Ian McKay.

Leesa’s new book, The Charisma Factor: Unlock the Secrets of Magnetic Charm and Personal Influence in Your Life, is available in bookstores and online.

Creating the ENERGY OF PEACE & SUCCESS at Home in 2023

The Chinese zodiac predicts the 2023 Year of the Hare will be erratic across the board, including in finance, climate, and politics. Rise above this by adopting Feng Shui principles in your mind and at home throughout the winter holiday season.

In published forecasts for the 2022 Year of the Tiger, I predicted the clash of three tigers — confrontations between three leading countries — resulting in financial market volatility. Those who took my advice ahead of that lunar cycle used Feng Shui to weather the financial storms, instill peace, and take command over personal and professional matters. Expect more turbulence in the year to come.

You can also weather the storms by taking your interior design one step further. Tap into Feng Shui Meridians using a custom application of natural elements, colors, textures, lights, and themes. There is no one size fits all approach.

Feng shui harnesses yin and yang, the Five Elements energy you were born with, and the Chinese Zodiac luck cycle to capitalize on your core energy and strengths.

A proactive and protective Feng Shui Strategy will empower and help you overcome turmoil and uncertainty. For this reason, a growing population of high-net-worth individuals have

been implementing Feng Shui at home to stimulate their energy base and achieve harmony. Here are some strategies to incorporate in the 2023 year to shape your destiny.

Positive Energy. This holiday season, unify your family and support systems. By harmonizing relationships that matter to you, you will have the confidence, motivation, focus and support to deal with the constantly fluctuating financial market in 2023. Cultivate positive energy that you can use next year.

Home. Resetting the energy of your family room, kitchen, and other spaces where people tend to gather or use the phone. Place a Himalayan salt lamp in a corner to cleanse the energy of the space. Many of my clients and I keep these lamps lit 24/7 in dark corners to provide warmth and consistent energy at home.

Virtual. Your appearance on a virtual screensignals your individual and professional composure or lack thereof. If you have a commanding presence, voice, or facial features, then use a neutral background and wardrobe to soften the delivery of your message. If you come across as meek, then adopt a warm or vibrant background and wardrobe to elevate your power. In either case, use your Five Elements Profile to set the energy and intentions you desire.

Power Objects. Display in your background objects that make you feel grounded, supported, calm, and focused. For example, those with low energy, lacking in motivation or confidence, can display a statute or picture of a horse, the Chinese zodiac sign that represents the Fire Element to help stimulate the association of vitality and power. Use Yin Yang and the Five Elements qualities to create different energy vibes throughout your home and empower yourself.

Meridians. Identify the major meridians in a home and apply Five Elements Principle to balance the energy flow in the space and generate positive outcomes for its residents. For example, after my client tapped into the meridian as shown in the picture, its New York City acupuncture & herbal clinic has enjoyed greater success and significantly improved patients’ lives.

Objects. Identify, gather, and centralize your medications and cherished possessions so they can be moved on short notice. This includes storing data elsewhere. Protect valuable objects from potential water and fire damage or while in transit during an emergency.

Spending. Rather than pouring funds into divisive political organizations, invest in self, career, loved ones, and physical spaces.

Conserve. Keep significant cash flow in both your financial institutions and on hand for emergency use.

Good Deeds. By individually and collectively cultivating good deeds through philanthropic work, you will help others weather the turbulent 2023 cycle and elevate your positive aura.

In sum, use this winter season to recharge by cultivating warmth, stability, and good deeds that will carry you through the jumpy Year of the Hare ending on February 4, 2024. Visit www.punyin.com to learn more.
