Fantasy of a Lifetime
September 18-19 | Ballet performance | National Theatre A Russian ballet troupe takes you through the twists and turns of a dazzling adventure which tells the tale of a young girl and her doll. Every young girl dreams of having a doll to play and share her secrets with when growing up. This ballet production is the perfect story depicting this union in a long-lasting fantasy between the young and kindhearted Marie and her gifted wooden doll. Performing live in Bahrain on September 18 and 19, the Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre presents one of the most famous plays of all time, The Nutcracker. The production was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in 1892. The 20-minute suite composed by musical prodigy Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is especially noted for dance pieces such as the Trepak, Waltz of the Flowers and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The show, held at the Bahrain National Theatre, is headlined by the talented ballet duo of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Anastasia Matvienko who plays Marie and Denis Matvienko who plays the Nutcracker. The characters travel on an adventure that is similar to that of Alice in Wonderland. Their journey is an allegory for life’s sorrows and pains, inviting the audience to reflect on themes shared by all of mankind.
Celebration Time Throughout September | Various locations | The Indian Club A highly commendable occasion in Bahrain is the centennial celebrations of the Indian Club Bahrain. Completing 100 years of existence, this social club has been a hotspot for many of the island’s expatriates through the generations. Eventful months lie ahead as the club honours the milestone with a schedule of activities starting with the inauguration of a new wall on September 12. This is followed by a centennial cricket tournament which kicks off on September 15 and runs until October 30. Football and hockey tournaments will begin in November. Colourful Carnival September 12 | Carnival | Baan Saeng Thai The annual Bandra Fair comes to life yet again at the Young Goans Club in Bahrain. Though it may not resemble a Brazilian carnival’s extravaganza, this parade led by King Momo and his troupe is the most anticipated spectacle in the club’s events calendar. “This nostalgic event filled with much amusement and excitement has been the hallmark of the club’s goals and initiative to bring cultural events to all communities in Bahrain, thereby uniting them in one spirit of brotherhood,” says Francis Correia, Young Goans Club president. Adding to the glamour of this year’s occasion is a group dance competition. Another event that guests look forward to is the search for the Bandra King and Queen. There will be a display of fun activities in addition to food stalls serving traditional Goan delicacies from noon until 10pm. The feast marks the significance of the nativity of Mary and inherits the name from the Bandra suburb in Mumbai from where the fair originates.
