Dear Readers,
Events Editor Hanna Moore
It’s official; winter has finally arrived in all its glory and with it come a number of exciting developments befitting the seasonal change. As the weather cools down and we are given some respite from the scorching sun it is the ideal time to dine al fresco. This month, we have a round up report of the Kingdom’s best outdoor eateries that will get your taste buds tingling. Our special jewellery report provides a sparkling overview of the best new designs and timepieces from the most exclusive and luxurious collections. Dance festivals, art expos and family fairs, if it’s going go in Bahrain, it’s included in our dedicated Happenings section. Market 338 is back with aplomb and this year’s theme is ‘the park’. It promises to provide a showcase for all things creative. And the creativity doesn’t stop there, another eagerly-awaited event is the Startup Bahrain workshop, a chance for entrepreneurial minds to meet and discuss ideas. One of the highlights of this month’s social calendar is Bahrain’s British community’s annual fundraiser, the Poppy Ball. Held in aid of the Chelsea Pensioners Appeal, this black tie event for a noble cause is not to be missed. This month we interview Gulf Hotel Group CEO Aqeel Raees to find out more about the property’s colourful 45-year history and its plans for the future. Also, under the spotlight is the Kingdom’s new French Ambassador, HE Bernard Regnauld-Fabe. He chats with Georgie Bradley about the importance of investing in youth and his experience of Bahrain so far. Steering you to the best deals on wheels, Charlie Holding takes the new 2015 Nissan X-Trail for a spin and gives his verdict on the contemporary crossover. So, make the most of the outdoors this month and be sure to enjoy the pleasant weather and the Kingdom’s great way of life.

Six HourS of BaHrain Bahrain International Circuit aims to shed new light on this popular race by hosting it at night and utilising its new, state-of-the-art floodlighting. When? November 14-15 Event? Six Hours of Bahrain Where? Bahrain International Circuit This year’s Six Hours of Bahrain is the seventh and penultimate round of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). It will be another major segment of the grand celebrations marking Bahrain International Circuit’s (BIC) landmark 10th anniversary. “We look forward to once again welcoming the WEC family back to the Kingdom for another exciting edition of the Six Hours of Bahrain,” says Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, chief executive of Bahrain International Circuit. “This endurance spectacle is a very unique event that has the potential of becoming a favourite amongst motor sport fans here in Bahrain and across the region.” This will be the third successive year BIC will be hosting the Six Hours of Bahrain, but it will be the first time for the WEC’s competitors to race under BIC’s all-new track lighting system, which was only partially complete when the event took place last year.
The floodlights made their global debut at this year’s Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. They have added a brilliant new spectacle to the racing package at BIC, enhancing the excitement for both the competing drivers and race fans. Many of the world’s prestigious car brands will be represented in the various race classes, including Audi, Toyota, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Porsche, Nissan and Chevrolet. The challengers will be competing in five categories, one more than last year’s race. Six Hours of Bahrain guarantees entertainment on and off the track, as it hosts carnival games, miniature rides for children, arts and crafts stations, food and beverage stalls and live stage performers. To add to the excitement, BIC will be opening its paddock to the public so that you will have the opportunity to see the action up close, including the WEC teams and drivers hard at work. The open paddock is unique to the WEC as no other global championship gives as much free access to what is going on behind the scenes. Tickets to the Six Hours of Bahrain are priced at BD20. Children aged 12 years and younger can get their tickets at half the price. Toddlers aged up to three years can get in for free. Call 17 450-000.

Exploring Memories Through her latest collection of artworks, this local artist asks people to take a trip down memory lane and lets you wander through her personal memories. When? Until November 4 Event? Art exhibition Venue? Albareh Art Gallery Albareh Art Gallery presents Wanderings, an exhibition of paintings by Bahraini artist Faika Al Hassan at its premises in Adliya. Her latest body of work is at once poignant
and whimsical. The collection is a play on words as much as it is a visual play, presenting itself to the viewer as paintings of neatly packed suitcases framed within the tight confines of an airplane window. Despite the overt travel reference, the journey is not physical. It is Faika’s own ‘wanderings’, her exploration of an inner world of memories, hopes and fears – an imaginary mindscape populated by little animals and little people spilling out of old
fashioned luggage or draped over toy chairs as if awaiting the start of a concert. It is her own personal baggage that she invites the viewer to explore. An economist by training, Faika began her art career as a young expectant mother taking an art course at the Bahrain Arts Society. Since then, she has continued to explore and experiment with her art, charting a unique path distinct from that of other local artists. Call 17 717-707 or email art@albareh.com.

We all want to meet people from history. The trouble is everyone is dead! The next best thing to the real deal is to catch a theatre performance of their tales. When? November 29-December 2 Event? Stage performance Venue? And now, due to popular demand, Horrible Histories will be at The Cultural Hall in Bahrain, to bring you Barmy Britain – Part Two! Horrible Histories is an educational entertainment franchise, which describes British history through the context of the ruling dynasties, as well as exploring significant worldwide cultures, often within the context of British history such as the Viking and Roman conquests on the British Isles. The hilarious, and sometimes gory, show takes shape in the form of magazines, television shows, audio tapes, CDs, activity books, games, books and, of course, theatre. Can you beat battling Boudicca? Can evil Elizabeth entertain England? Will King Charles keep his head? Would you

Come down to the performance and see how much your guts can hurt and how much you can cry with laughter. Maddy Costa, who reviewed Barmy Britain – Part Two for The Guardian, says, “It’s irreverent yet informative, immature yet intelligent, and successfully pastiches all manner of music and other cultural products without demanding knowledge of the originals to be enjoyable.” The event presents a special school package (for a limited time) and a special family package of four tickets for BD50. Ordinary tickets for the show are priced at BD15 and are available at Havajava in Manazel and Alosra supermarkets. Timings of the performances vary. Focus on PeoPle Critical issues that can affect businesses in the coming years will be discussed at this three-day annual summit with industry leaders. When? November 25-27 Event? Conference Venue? Crowne Plaza Bahrain The Sixth Annual HRM Summit is a three-day conference, which includes HR Excellence Awards followed by three parallel post-conference workshops. At the event, the major shifts affecting organisations today and in the future are explored. You will learn first-hand how to recognise and respond to these shifts and also network with colleagues who are successfully navigating these areas of development. The event is categorised into different tracks that cover the most demanding HR development and management issues facing organisations, big and small, in the region. These tracks cover a number of critical topics such as HR strategy, rewards management, talent management, skills development, employee engagement and various other global practices. Each will be followed by a panel discussion comprising leading international experts in their respective fields and will enable delegates to join in and participate in the discussion. “The main focus points of the summit are to share information and experiences by networking with organisations that are experiencing the same, or similar, challenges,” says Dr Leslie Thurogood, senior VP, competence assurance, at Mubadala Development Company, who is a speaker at the summit. “A key asset for leadership, coaching and succession is knowledge of where the organisation intends to be in the next five to 10 years. This will include manpower needs, development activities and the changing dynamics of the employees.” Guests can look forward to open and transparent exchanges and a willingness to share at the summit. They can take away a positive experience and reassurance that the future, although challenging, can be met successfully. “Experience is gained over time. So the experience available next year will be different, and hopefully more appropriate, than the experience this year,” Dr Leslie adds. “With the ‘silver tsunami’ retiring over the next decade, organisations will have to plan and develop the next generation, Gen Z, to meet the needs of the firm; these issues are discussed at the HRM Summit.” Other speakers at the event include Ron Thomas, chief human resources officer currently based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Sandrine Bardot brings two decades of expertise to her sessions, which includes stints at Microsoft, Airbus, Apple, Fiat and Majid Al Futtaim. The summit features a unique round-table panel discussion, wherein top CEOs, general managers, HR directors and managers drawn from many leading organisations will discuss, debate and answer questions. John Robertson is a human cartoon, with a brain that’s faster than most people and a mouth that’s faster than that. He’s been on BBC’s Edinburgh Nights, Challenge, London Live and Canal+. He has crowd surfed down hills, faked an epileptic fit on Australian TV and once did a four-hour solo show in front of a quarter of a million people. Get ready, it won’t help. Known to be one of Australia’s top 10 young comics, John is ridiculously entertaining, funny and sharp. His material is edgy, intelligent and smoothly delivered.

Liam muLLone Hugely inventive, with a wonderful turn of phrase, Liam Mullone has appeared on Stewart Lee’s Alternative Comedy Experience on Comedy Central, ITV’s Stand Up Hero and BBC’s New Comedy Awards. His writing credits include C4’s Stand Up for the Week, BBC’s Russell Howard’s Good News and BBCR4’s The Now Show. The talented 42 November 2014
comedian is known for his cynicism. Each routine is studded with beautifully crafted gags. Liam tackles topics off the usual comedy palette with intelligence and a flick of surrealism. Rather than simply accepting the default comic impression that life is hard, he gives the impression he’s thoroughly researched the idea before coming to the same, cynical conclusion.
Award winner Mandy Knight has headlined all over the world, including Dubai, Hong Kong, China, Thailand and South Africa. She has appeared on television stand-up shows like Live at Jongleurs, The Comedy Store and The World Stands Up for the Paramount Comedy Channel. She was the first female comic to MC the Jongleurs comedy chain. Watching her is like being punched by an iron fist in a velvet glove. She will leave you insulted, but breathless from laughter. She is not for the fainthearted or hard of thinking. As a television actress,
Mandy appeared as a main character in Jo Brand’s Like it or Lump it. She has also appeared with David Baddiel in The Baddiel Syndrome and on The Little Big Woman Radio Show. Other television credits include presenting various shows like Live Time and writing for television for ITV’s Des and Mel Show. She is currently developing a comedy drama with Sky TV. This year promises to be even bigger and better. Bahrain’s popular DJ and comedian, Imran Al Aradi and DJ and music producer, DJ Outlaw, return to the judging panel together with a new judge, Carol Souki, in the quest to find the best talent in Bahrain. The eagerly anticipated talent show is open to kids between five and 13 years. More than 100 kids have 44 November 2014
registered as solo performers to showcase their talent during the auditions for acting, singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, performing gymnastics or a comedy routine. Watch these young talents audition from November 6-8. Ten shortlisted acts will be announced and will then move to the grand finale, which will take place on November 20. The top three acts will receive Seef Mall gift cards, with the winner receiving a BD1,000 gift card. Second and third placed performers will receive a BD700 gift card and a
BD500 gift card respectively. Last season, 13-year-old Chlea Trinidad was crowned the first Seef Junior Superstar with her jaw-dropping rendition of Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing, during the finale. Following her winning performance, Chlea has
become a national sensation, securing a twoyear recording contract with music producer DJ Outlaw’s production company. She has also recorded her first single. “When choosing what to do, think of what you can do best and believe in it. Don’t worry about the
judges being present. Just close your eyes and imagine you are in your favourite place or that no one is around. Believe that this is your moment to shine and show the world what you have, and the rest will come naturally,” says Carol Souki. Visit www.seef.net. www.bahrainthismonth.com

INTERVIEWS
Setting HigH StandardS Charlie holding after 45 years of setting the standard for 5-star hotels in the kingdom, the gulf hotel Bahrain says the best is yet to come as it reveals a range of new initiatives.
A
ccording to Gulf Hotels Group CEO and Board Member, Aqeel Raees, one of the highlights is the addition of a new fine-dining outlet offering contemporary Indian fare, Rasoi by Vineet. The new 108-seat restaurant will be the tenth addition to the hotel’s finedining offerings. “It is expected to open by the end of 2014 and we are confident that it will provide the same level of exceptional service that the Gulf Hotel is renowned for,” says Aqeel. “When we opened, we had one restaurant, the Falcone Room. Now we have more restaurants than any other hotel in Bahrain.” Also in the pipeline for the hotel are plans for a new state-of-the-art spa. Currently under construction and expected to be completed by summer next year, the spa will include a gym, massage facilities, swimming pools and a beauty salon. Aqeel has been with the hotel for the past 40 years and has seen it grow from a waterfront property to a prominent fixture in the central www.bahrainthismonth.com
Adliya district, overlooking the Grand Mosque and the Royal Palace. Over the years, land reclamation took away the sea views, but couldn’t take away the hotel’s reputation for quality service or the management’s desire to evolve, expand and develop. Having started as night manager and diligently working his way up the ranks, Aqeel believes competition is healthy and has been a positive factor in the Gulf Hotel Bahrain’s growth. “We have just completed renovations of the South Wing, and given it a completely new interior. The apartments are also being renovated, which should be completed by next summer. As our competitors develop, so must we. However, what makes us special is our impeccable customer service,” he adds. The Gulf Hotels Group has been awarded many accolades. The most recent is the Forbes Middle East Award for the Top 500 Companies in the Arab World. Earning the 351st spot among the 500, the group was among the 22 companies listed from Bahrain.

The list, which includes only publicly listed companies, was compiled and based on their 2013 financial statements as well as collected stock information from across the region. Aqeel attributed the success of the company to its employees. “We believe that the comfort and happiness of the employees is what leads to the happiness and loyalty of our valued customers,” he says. The Gulf Hotel Bahrain was recently awarded a certificate of excellence by Booking.com, one of the Web’s leading online travel agencies, for attaining a score of 8.2 on its guest reviews for the year 2013. The hotel also won a certificate of excellence for the year 2014 from Trip Advisor. “The group always encourages interaction, and the sharing and exchanging of experiences between team members. This opens up new avenues for the exchange of cultures and different experiences. Knowledge will lead the better decisions in the end that will generate success and profit for the company in general,” says Aqeel. November 2014 57

HE Bernard Regnauld-Fabre (BR): I learned how to communicate with the citizens and answer to a lot 58 November 2014
BTM: What in particular has caught your attention? BR: I’m fascinated by the decision-makers of the country, who have made Bahrain a platform with such a strategic vision. A certain number of French groups like the French bank, BNP Paribas, have www.bahrainthismonth.com
settled their regional headquarters in Bahrain. The logistics and the services combined that Bahrain offers have given the country a central status in the region. I feel that Bahrain’s society is liberal, which allows people to live the way they want, which is important. BTM: How have you found the French community in Bahrain so far? BR: I’m proud to tell you that the number of French citizens in Bahrain has peaked over the 1,000 mark. We were 950 when I first came in September and now the new registration results have revealed the increase. That figure has doubled in five years. We are fortunate to have The French School of Bahrain in Busaiteen. We have 500 students now and we are going to double the capacity. BTM: a lot of students who start off at The French School of Bahrain transfer to one of the British schools. Why is that? BR: Although the school’s curriculum extends to the age of 18, the school does not offer a recognised diploma from the French school system. It will be certified in one to two years. It is on my agenda to carry this out. We have two scopes. The first one is to double the capacity of the school and to have a new building in front of the original. The second one is to finalise the process of certification of the French baccalaureate, which will be an important step. However, I want to stress that young students from The French School are already accepted to French universities with their degree. There is a tremendous reform in the Ministry of Education in Bahrain to make French the compulsory secondary language taught in both public and private Arabic schools. We are going to do our best to help achieve this as it is a matter of cohesiveness between the cultures, schools, universities and teachers. BTM: your focus is on the youth. How else are you planning to improve facilities for them? BR: French Alliance is a focal point to attract Bahrainis for language courses. We have exhibitions and movies every Thursday. We have a unique and historic site in Muharraq, called La Maison Jamsheer, which is supported by the Ministry of Culture and other Bahraini institutions. It is like a cultural centre, a place where we can have musical and art events. I went there and it has the beautiful traditional Bahraini architecture. Therefore I want to create an artistic space out of it. It is functioning, but it could go further. I would like to have it opened every day www.bahrainthismonth.com
on a permanent basis, with full-time performers, and give access to studios to use it as a creative space. We could do better so people can profit from it. I don’t know Muharraq completely, but it’s one of the best places I have seen. BTM: What about enhancing other relations? BR: I want to enhance the political relations and dialogue. I was lucky to meet His Majesty before the credentials in Paris because he visited at the end of August and was received by the French President, François Hollande. We have a high committee political dialogue which meets at least once a year. In addition, we will discuss bridging ties between culture and economy. We are working hard with partnerships with universities. We have 50 young Bahrainis studying in France at the moment and 30 French people in Bahrain. November 2014 59

Feeding The LocaL economy by GEORGIE BRADLEY From finance to food, Dr. Adel Bukhowa has scoped out the markets over the years. Best known for the much-loved Yum Yum Tree Food Court, the ‘restaurant within a restaurant’ concept has won over foodies across Bahrain and the world. Dr. Adel talks us through his expansion plans.
D
r. Adel Bukhowa is the very definition of an entrepreneur. While completing a host of business science qualifications across the universities of Nebraska, Minnesota and Northern Colorado, Dr. Adel supported himself through the entirety of his further education, working as a part-time nurse. When he returned to Bahrain in 1978, he became the head of finance and administration at the Bahrain Monetary Agency. He then went onto working for the Ministry of Education as the cultural attaché of the State of Bahrain in Canada and the United States. Further cementing his ties with the US he became the counsellor of Bahrain in Dallas, Texas. By 1985 he entered the restaurant industry. Today, Dr. Adel has over 140 branches of food outlets all over the world. The most recent country to open was Djibouti with a Subway now operating and a Pizza Hut under construction. He has further plans to expand into the East African Market. BTM: Why are you targeting the East African markets at the moment? AB: The market is very promising. The European and US market is very saturated while the East African market has a higher percentage growth and many opportunities to bring in world class concepts. It’s a fresh and virginal market. Many Africans cannot travel to America, this is a way for them to experience America via its food and products. We hope to make an announcement shortly on an exciting concept we are bringing to East Africa. 60 November 2014
BTM: You are bringing the UAE based mini mart: Zoom to Bahrain, what plans do you have for it? AB: Zoom is a mini mart with a great convenience store concept. It has a bakery, Starbucks and is an amazing convenience store. We have a gas station in Juffair where we will open our first Zoom location. It will be open 24 hours a day. We hope to expand across the island too as we are sure it will be the best convenience store concept in Bahrain.
opening a 12-storey hospital in Riffa. It is currently under construction and we are working with Saudi Arabia to get it ready. It doesn’t have a name yet, but we hope to announce a partner there soon. We are also building a mall in Janabiyah with a Zoom too. It will be accessible for those going to and from Saudi Arabia near the Saar exit. It is the closest point to the bridge. Finally we are opening the popular Los Angles, California self serve frozen yogurt chain Menchies in some select Yum Yum Tree locations.
BTM: We’ve heard about your new Ramada City Centre hotel opposite Bahrain City Centre. What will give this hotel its distinction against the many other hotels in the market? AB: It will be a four-star hotel with more than 140 very spacious rooms and focus on being a family orientated place to stay for GCC and international guests. The extremely popular Lebanese restaurant Reem Al Bawadi from Dubai will be opened there as well. I think we need four-star hotels, especially for families who want to be more cost-effective. We feel that the City Centre area has a lack of hotels and therefore we hope the hotel will do well. In addition to this, we are also
BTM: You have a lot on your plate at the moment! Which project takes priority? AB: My main priority is to contribute to in the local economy. The hospital, Zoom, Menchies, the restaurants, and the hotel take precedence right now. BTM: How does the local economy look right now? AB: It actually looks very promising. You don’t really appreciate how good something is until you leave it and experience a different perspective. I just came back from a trip aboard to less fortunate places and realised this. This is my way of giving back to the country. We are very blessed in Bahrain. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Firm Favourites GEORGIE BRADLEY Kooheji Jewellery is coming up to its 62nd year of providing its customers unique collections of jewellery. We sit with general manager Waleed Al Kooheji ahead of Jewellery Arabia to find out what makes customers put their faith and trust in the brand.
Waleed Al Kooheji
Waleed Al Kooheji’s father and uncle got Kooheji Jewellery up and running in 1960 in Al Khobar, targeting Aramco employees and Eastern Province residents. The jewellery house has since opened shops across Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Bahrain This Month (BTM): Kooheji Jewellery has a more widespread presence in Saudi Arabia as compared to Bahrain. Why is this? Waleed Al Kooheji (WK): Although my family is originally Bahraini, our company history started off in Saudi Arabia; the market there is strong. We opened in Bahrain because this is our home; the market is becoming more mature and has begun accepting fine jewellery. BTM: You’re now opening Kooheji Jewellery in Moda Mall alongside some of the most luxurious brands in the world. What do you hope this will bring to the brand? WK: The boutique which will open on February 1 next year will be located next to Bulgari and opposite Tiffany & Co. We will be in a prime position by going to Moda Mall; we believe there are certain customers there who look for a different category of jewellery with specific designs. Some customers look for a particular 62 November 2014
diamond shape, cut and clarity, which we provide in our unique pieces and sparkling designs. We’ve been participating in Jewellery Arabia for the last 17 years. This year, we are going to open a new stand in Hall One, which contains the highest quality of products and brands. The level of elegance showcased here will be reflected in our boutique in Moda Mall, where the decorations come from Switzerland. BTM: You call it a boutique rather than a shop. Does this speak of the brand’s exclusivity? WK: Our aim is to provide the best: starting with the location to the layout of the boutique and ending with the product. Our category of customers falls within the luxury sector; therefore the service has to complement this. The way that they will be welcomed, seated and treated throughout their shopping experience will be personal. Our main focus is to make sure this service is carried out to the highest standard. BTM: What can we expect from the latest collection at Jewellery Arabia? WK: You can expect the size of the carats to be bigger than ever. I always tell the customers to
treat each purchase as an investment. In order to get the most value out of it, especially if you want to sell it in the future, investing in a certain size is essential. BTM: Will Moda Mall add value to the Kooheji Jewellery name? WK: Absolutely. You pay a premium to be side by side with top end businesses where the quality is maintained consistently. We are also blessed because we have the trust of our customers intact. For example, if you want to buy a diamond, the highest percentage of jewellery customers don’t know how to distinguish the size, colour, clarity, price and quality of a product. They put their trust into Kooheji Jewellery’s expertise. We depend on this personal relationship that we have had for decades with our customers. BTM: Is this relationship enhanced through your digital presence? WK: Our Instagram and Twitter pages are filled with positive comments from our customers. They are complimentary towards the service of Kooheji Jewellery beyond the collection. It’s all part of our trusted reputation of selling the best quality of jewellery at the best price. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Bigger and Better GEORGIE BRADLEY Over the last 10 years, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Bahrain has seen exponential growth in both size and reputation. Its president, Prof Sameer Otoom discusses how it will provide the best student experience. From its humble beginnings in the Seef district to the sprawling, state-of-the-art campus in Busaiteen, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) is going places. In 2004, the institution had a 28 student count, but today the figure sits at a promising 1,300 and with the staff count exceeding 250. According to Prof Sameer, these results met the expectations of the business plan from the beginning – but what comes next? Bahrain This Month (BTM): RCSI – Bahrain’s campus feels like an educational oasis. What do you intend to offer students beyond that? Prof Sameer Otoom (SO): We want students to have a well-rounded experience. We have invested US$700,000 to renovate existing sport facilities to include a basketball court and ladies’ and men’s gyms. Additionally, we have invested in a FIFA-standard football pitch which at night, with the skyline in the background, gives you a gorgeous view. BTM: Why is it important for students to engage in extracurricular activity? SO: The university experience is not limited to education. Students should have a vibrant choice of other activities; RCSI Bahrain is 64 November 2014

interested in supporting that. Our students are active in more than 25 clubs and societies that we have on campus. They put on a range of events, including the International Festival, which features different foods from students who come from more than 30 countries. The event also showcases traditional songs and dances from different cultures around the globe. BTM: The 10-year anniversary will be officially marked on November 27. What celebrations have you got in store? SO: We are going to have Dr Michael Brennan from the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in the United States as our keynote speaker at a gala dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel & Spa. Dr Brennan has a distinguished career in endocrinology and professionalism in healthcare. He is an international figure. He is also an RCSI graduate in Dublin, which is why it is an honour to have him present for the event. Towards the end of the event we will have a special performance from former Riverdance entertainers.
BTM: Will you take this as an opportunity to announce new plans? SO: We will announce plans to go forward with research. We are currently looking at the potential to launch new programmes at the university. We hope to shortly announce the funding of six PhDs with RCSI – Dublin. Once the PhDs have been approved, we will recruit students. Their tuition and expenses will be covered through a scholarship called the Dilmun Postgraduate and Research Scholarships. Students’ research can be on biomedical sciences, translational medicine and health services. It is worthy of note that on October 20 the Higher Education Council launched its research strategy, which is a pleasant coincidence with our launch. We would like to expand our collaboration in research to include regional and international universities. This month, we will sign a joint funding research agreement with Arabian Gulf University to utilise faculty, experience and resources in the two organisations. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Putting the Serve in Service GEORGIE BRADLEY From what started out as a small group of like-minded American women in 1974, this society has developed into a force of thriving cultures, an endless calendar of events and an unwavering spirit to give back to the community.
‘Service’ is the buzzword of the moment surrounding the American Women’s Association’s (AWA’s) 40th anniversary. As the milestone year sets in, AWA is focused on charity more than ever. “Charity is at the forefront of our association’s ideals, followed by friendship and cultural understanding,” says Lisa Wahba, the association’s president. Lisa, from Pennsylvania, USA, first mixed in with the AWA back in January 2011. A bit hesitant at first as she had always had a diverse group of friends, Lisa assumed it was purely for American women. She hastens to add that it’s very important to be aware of how open the association is to any nationality. “I was instantly hooked by the calibre of women,” Lisa says, now in her second term as president after serving as vice president and recording secretary respectively. “Our social activities enable us to do our charitable work. Women are nurturers by nature and we want to give back.” Having been a social worker, Lisa has a natural handle on managing and providing assistance where necessary. The main focus for this year is the Cherry Tree Trot (CTT), which takes place at the Bahrain International Circuit on December 13. What is unique about CTT is 66 November 2014
Lisa Wahba
that it’s not simply done for people with disabilities, it’s done with them. “There are so many different races which include an 8km run and a family walk-a-thon. A highlight is the race for differently abled individuals. There’s a heart-warming spirit about the whole day,” Lisa explains. “AWA has a generous spread of sponsors, which enables us to fund our charitable endeavours. It is critical for us to be successful from a sponsorship perspective and in bringing the community together.” The CTT posters do just that. The association had collected a number of artworks submitted by different centres and schools. They wanted everyone involved to leave their stamp on the event. “A noteworthy donation of late was giving BD5,000 towards the purchase of a Toyota
Corolla for the Down Syndrome Society. This will enable them to do early intervention visits to different villages. It’s important to be proactive about early detection. Therefore we felt it was fundamental to serve them in this way. Every year, we try to come up with ideas to make an even bigger impact on the community,” Lisa adds. What gives AWA its unique presence in the fabric of Bahrain’s society is the allencompassing acceptance of culture. What stops it from being renamed as the ‘International Women’s Association’ after 40 years of developing such a multicultural identity? “When you think of what America is, it’s a melting pot. Even if you don’t have an American passport, it doesn’t mean you don’t uphold the same kind of ideals we’re trying to promote,” Lisa notes. www.bahrainthismonth.com

orn in Lebanon, Janan Habib has developed a close connection with the history and culture of Bahrain. She is guilty of breaking many stereotypes and is personally responsible for rebuilding and restoring much of the Kingdom’s cultural heritage that we’re so proud of. The ace architect is the managing director of Habib Associates Limited and is a lifetime member of the Bahrain Society of Engineers. Janan joins George Middleton in a shiny-new Jaguar XJL as they discuss the various milestones of her professional journey, traversing the beautiful roads of Amwaj Islands. Watch this interview on Bahrain this Month’s YouTube channel. George: What drew you towards a career in architecture? Was this something that you always wanted to do? Janan: I think I made the decision when I was all of 13 years. In school, they had asked us to write a composition on what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wrote that I wanted to be an architect, since there were few females in the profession. I was, of course, also hugely influenced and inspired by my cousin Bassem Khoury, who used to bring his drawings to our house. I found his work extremely fascinating. He advised me to take up architecture as I was really good at mathematics and sketching.
Janan Habib with George F Middleton
George: You undertook the redesign of two palaces in Riyadh. What was this experience like, both personally and professionally? Janan: The impact was not felt as much professionally as the palaces are private properties, but it was an excellent experience for me personally. The Royal Family really took me in as one of their own; the interaction with them was great. This helped me immensely to understand their needs and expectations; we are good friends to date. George: Was working at historical and heritage sites a specific ambition of yours or did you make a slow transition into this specialisation? Janan: The love for historical sites was actually a transition that took place while I was working on the two palaces in Saudi Arabia. It was in

2002; I started daydreaming, sitting in my office in Juffair, about working at a museum. A few days later I got a call from Shaikha Mai from the Ministry of Culture. This incident should actually be included in The Secret (she laughs). It’s been 12 years with them; 12 happy years! George: You were born and raised in Lebanon. What brought you to Bahrain? What made you fall in love with the Kingdom? Janan: That’s right; I was born and raised in Lebanon. I lived in Greece for some time. My sister and her husband moved to Abu Dhabi and soon after became parents to a baby girl, Tamara. I went there to see my niece and just ended up staying with them. It was in Abu Dhabi that I had the chance to work on projects related to hotels and came in contact with Jamil Wafa in Bahrain. Finally, I signed up to do the renovation for InterContinental Regency, which lasted from1993 to 1995. It was a great experience and a big leap for me professionally. So I have to thank Jamil Wafa for bringing me to Bahrain and introducing me to such a welcoming and beautiful country. George: What advice would you like to give to upcoming designers and architects? Janan: This is something I say to all budding architects and cannot stress enough upon. You must leave your computers and the desks. Feel the space that you will be working with. Stretch your arms; experience the empty space and then think about designing it. Relying on software is convenient, but until you see the dynamics of light, the air in a particular place, the inherent character an area carries, you cannot do a good job. November 2014 69

jewellery and watches
Bright and Beautiful ELMA bArThoLoMEw A fine piece of jewellery or an exquisite timepiece are ultimate signs of luxury. Thankfully, the Kingdom has no shortage of places to find the perfect piece.
Bahrain’s appetite for fine jewellery continues to grow and there are more retailers than ever that now call the island their home. Buyers are spoilt for choice when it comes to international brands and styles. Your outfit is never complete without a hint of bling and the luxury industry is all about the ‘wow’ factor. With the aim of capturing the emotions of wearers and observers, today’s designers travel the world for inspiration; some create their pieces by hand. These businesses are not just about mechanics, precision and highly-tooled movements; they are about the heart. Both industries of watchmaking and high-end jewellery have rich histories. They still use century-old skills, which are passed down through the generations. The artists use their knowledge to create striking timepieces. New watches may be innovative, but they have decades of heritage running through their mechanisms. The greatest watchmakers today have all served their time on the workbenches of experts. As much as we love our modern timepieces, today’s consumers are fans of vintage pieces as well. Bahrain This Month took a tour of the island to find some of the best places to find your next luxurious piece of jewellery and invest in a classic timepiece. Dance of Light They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend and this dazzling new collection offers a spiralling sensation of options that will undoubtedly be any connoisseur’s friends for life.
De Beers Diamond Jewellers has unveiled its new Aria collection. The impressive range is as distinct as it is beautiful thanks to the central diamond being encircled with a series of swirling, spiralling white gold ribbons. Its makers say the spirited, swirling display explores the release of constraints. It appears as though gravity has been defied; a feeling of airy weightlessness is delivered with pure grace. A dramatic interplay of light and shadow is punctuated with the beautiful shapes. Radiating from the centre diamond, the motif of the Aria collection artfully traces the movement of an elegant dancer. The diamonds honour the female form, capturing beauty and grace. The ultimate expression of diamond mastery, the Aria collection includes an array of Signature pieces, followed by stunning Prestige designs and High Jewellery creations. The studs in the Signature line feature seven layers of white gold and pavĂŠ, which beautifully surround the 0.15-carat diamond. The Prestige pieces introduce openwork, extending the expression of the Aria motif. Extraordinary continuous lines interplay between round brilliant and diamond baguettes in the High Jewellery range, creating flowing formations that culminate in the motif totalling to 59.09 carats. The collection is available at the De Beers store at Moda Mall. Call 17 002-905.

jewellery & watches A LA MODE
The Legend is Back More than any other watchmaker, this brand was responsible for the concept of the modern Swiss sports watch as it is known today.
Alpina is known to be the inventor of the modern sports watch with the Alpina 4 in 1938. This year, it brings back the ‘4’ concept with its new Alpiner 4 collection. The concept behind the Alpina 4 was to reunite, in a single case, the four essential features for a sports watch to be called a sports watch: antimagnetic, antishock, water-resistant and stainless steel. The Alpiner 4 watch comes with two dial variants – black and silver. It can be fitted with a stainless steel bracelet or a genuine alligator strap. Prominent on the dial is the ‘4’ logo, which distinguishes the watch from all Alpina watches that possess all four sports qualities. Alpiner 4 is now available at A La Mode stores. Call 17 179-854.

Touch of Glamour
This luxury watchmaker presents a new line that is designed to appeal to both men and women and carries a dash of stardust.
88 November 2014
Great news for connoisseurs of luxury timepieces: IWC Schaffhausen has added a new mid-sized collection to its Portofino line. Portofino Midsize Automatic Moon Phase and the Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night are two radiant 37mm beauties available in seven different versions. Ten other similar models will soon be launched, which will be available with or without a diamond-set bezel. Three versions of the watch, featuring 40mm cases and set with precious stones, round off the dazzling display. The Portofino collection has been an expression of understated elegance for 30 years. Thanks to its timeless design, the watch family has established itself as one of IWC Schaffhausen’s most successful collections and is equally popular with both men and women. “IWC has established itself as a global brand, and therefore keeps a close eye on what people are wearing when it comes to watches and jewellery, and the developing trends,” says Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “What we are currently observing is an increasing worldwide demand for watches set with diamonds.” IWC has responded with the development of its classic Portofino watch family. “With the mid-sized collection, we are making this successful watch line more interesting for customers with slimmer wrists,” Georges adds. “The diamondset models will appeal to anyone with a preference for timepieces that combine minimalist design with a touch of glamour.”
Stellar endorsement Portofino’s photo-shoot for the watches mirrors the exquisite grandeur of the creations. Peter Lindbergh created magic with his lens as he returned after four years to capture IWC Schaffhausen’s new line. The location was, of course, Portofino — an ancient former abbey, with magical, sprawling gardens and endless views over the Golfo del Tigullio. Some of the biggest international celebrities congregated to be part of this outstanding concept — a cast that in Peter’s words ‘only IWC can summon’. On camera are Cate Blanchett, Emily Blunt, Zhou Xun, Christoph Waltz and Ewan McGregor, donning the exclusive watches. They stroll through the picturesque lanes of Portofino dressed in elegant black tuxedos and drink espresso at a coffee bar, where time appears to have stood still for 50 years. The women graceful and androgynous, the men laid back and relaxed. The new mid-sized models play with contrasts, blurring the lines between masculinity and femininity, and thus are attractive to both genders. Call 17 431-177.

AMBASSADOR STORES
Right on Time As a state-of-the-art masterpiece, this watch divides the world into 100,000 squares that represent all 39 different time zones. Seiko’s authorised dealers, Ambassador Stores, usher in a new era of timekeeping technology to Bahrain with the introduction of the world’s first GPS solar watch, the Seiko Astron. Embedded with the watchmaker’s patented, low-energy-consuming GPS receiver, this timepiece can accurately update the time up to 1/100th of a second in any corner of the world at the single press of a button. Once a day (or on demand), the Seiko Astron automatically receives the time signal by connecting to four or more of the GPS satellites that orbit the Earth, allowing the watch to pinpoint the time zone it is in. The Astron also runs entirely off solar power or any form of ambient light, making it a ‘no maintenance’ watch. Packing all this technology into a meagre 47mm diameter, the Astron only weighs 135 grams. Another unique feature is Seiko’s new proprietary anti-reflective coating applied on both the front and back of the glass, which prevents 99 per cent of light reflection and allows the dial to be easily legible, even in bright light. So head towards Ambassador Stores to experience the power of the new Seiko Astron. Call 17 225-513.

The New Big Bang
A fantastic and successful second year of collaboration between luxury brands, Ferrari and Hublot, has come to an end.
92 November 2014
After the launch of several record-breaking watches in the recent past, Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot, is proud to unveil three new pieces for 2014, which are already part of the Big Bang 45mm family. The first is the aptly named Big Bang Ferrari Ceramic Carbon with the iconic Ferrari yellow. The second is the Big Bang Ferrari King Gold which, for the first time, comes as a full gold watch including its case and bezel. And finally, the Big Bang Ferrari Titanium Carbon boasts red sapphire glass. All of them are equipped with the Unico movement designed, developed and produced entirely at Hublot.
The new symbol of the brand’s progress towards verticalisation, the Unico movement is designed, developed, machined and assembled by the micromechanical engineers, engineers and watchmakers at Hublot. The practical flyback chronograph can be reset at any time, which is unique in the watchmaking industry. It features two push-buttons, with a date indicator, a uniquely positioned mechanism with dual coupling and the famous ‘column wheel’ visible on the dial side. The development required a completely original approach and thinking outside the box. For example, the hour counter is driven directly by the barrel, and there is no jumper in the chronograph mechanism. This simplification boosts reliability and robustness. Its pallet fork and escapement wheel are fixed to a removable platform and are made from silicium, the lightness of which provides a guarantee of performance. Its construction, which incorporates just 330 components, has been simplified as much as possible in order to further increase robustness. Its frequency of 4Hz or 28,800 vibrations per hour and its immaculate finish are a guarantee of high chronometric quality. Finally, its automated production ensures consistent, controlled quality. Its power reserve is around 72 hours. The carbon fibre bezel for the Big Bang Ferrari Ceramic Carbon is set apart by forging of all the carbon fibre components using the multi-layer principle. This involves the stacking of several sheets of carbon fibre (up to 12 for the thickest component), pressed into moulds and placed in polymerisation ovens. The advantage of this principle is that there are no bubbles, therefore providing the material with excellent homogeneity as well as higher mechanical strength. The in-house machining is done on specially adapted machines with five spindles. Each component of the case and the movement is subjected to continual checks throughout the manufacturing process. Finally, the mass of the red sapphire crystal for this model is coloured directly by adding chemical components during the development of the material. Thanks to this process, the colour is unalterable. The timepiece comes with two straps, in black or red Schedoni leather stitched onto black rubber, which gives it a great deal of flexibility, comfort and durability. This stylish five-door model sets out to continue the legacy of the first-ever premium automobile in the small car segment. At the same time, it carries forward the tradition of the classic MINI that dates back 55 years. The new model boasts an extra 72mm of interior space and the body has been lengthened by 161mm. www.bahrainthismonth.com
Euro Motors, the BMW Group importer in Bahrain, has revealed that the new BMW M4 Convertible, which packs a plethora of new technology features and lightweight materials, will be added to its already powerful M line-up. The sleek, new mean machine replicates the performance figures of the new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé, but emphasises its stylish and distinctive appearance through its individual character. Paul Yates, general manager at Euro Motors, says, “The new BMW M4 Convertible builds on 26 years of tradition in the performance convertible segment. Combining the raw power derived from its 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo engine with the sporty new design, the vehicle will deliver the exhilarating ‘wind in your hair’ feeling as one unleashes it on the tarmac. We are confident the vehicle will be a phenomenal success with our clientele in Bahrain.” Drawing inspiration from a long tradition of producing quality vehicles, BMW’s high-performance sports car for track and road is now entering its fifth generation in opentop form. The BMW M4 Convertible shares the elegant lines of its open-top 4 Series siblings. Its design skilfully blends a distinctive and graceful silhouette boasting finely
balanced proportions when the roof is open with a dynamic coupé line. Styling cues include a signature power dome for the bonnet, eye-catching exterior mirrors in twin-stalk style and flared front and rear wheel arches bulging over forged light alloy wheels with mixed tyres in 18-inch (optional 19-inch) format. JAC
No Alternative! A leading Chinese automaker aims to entice drivers in the Kingdom with its sleek, sedan, which combines affordability and class.
100 November 2014
Chinese automaker JAC Motors (Jianghuai Automobile Co Ltd) has a wide model line spanning from commercial trucks to small city cars. The brand’s main attraction is the 1.8-litre B Class sedan, the JAC J5, a nippy little number that aims to combine luxury and practicality at a competitive price, delivering a reassuring and supple drive. Its exterior has been created by the famous Pininfarina design centre in Italy, which gives this model a welcome European feel and character. It has clinched several awards including the ‘most beautiful car in the last 10 years’ from Pininfarina and the CCTV Best B Class car of the year for 2011. However, the feather in its cap is the impressive range of safety features. It boasts great active and passive safety systems to ensure confidence. It has received the C-NCAP 5 star crash test rating and also features ABS brakes, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), integrated side panels and dual airbags. The J5 is equipped with an advanced mechanical power steering system. Compared with electrical power steering, the mechanical version delivers better
steering response and enhances the overall quality of the drive. The J5 is designed to provide driving pleasure, safety and affordable luxury. As such, it offers leather seats, alloy wheels, parking sensors, rear air-conditioner, full power windows and tyre pressure detection systems. One of this model’s most pleasant surprises is the Mitsubishi four-speed automatic transmission with flattype torque converter and solid transfer case, which improves the quality of the drive. The brake discs at the front and rear of the J5 have a large diameter, which helps the ABS+EBD system to provide increased braking efficiency. JAC also has other models of vehicles including the Minibus Refine, which comes in three variants: the 12-seater passenger bus, six-seater half panel van and three-seater full panel van. The passenger bus comes with bucket seats for extra comfort and parking sensors. Finance schemes start from BD99 per month. To book a test drive, visit the JAC showroom located at Segaya Plaza, Zinj. i Call 17 270-270. www.bahrainthismonth.com

KIA MOTORS
From Strength-to-Strength According to the ‘100 Best Global Brands 2014’ list, the value of this automotive brand has risen from US$929 million to US$5.4 billion since 2007.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Kia has seen a massive 480 per cent rise in the value of its brand in just seven years as a result of a new visual identity, high-profile sponsorships and substantial investment in research and development. The increase in brand value has outshone the 11 other vehicle manufacturers on the list and the rate of growth over the past year alone is more than double the average for all companies in the top 100, the company says. Interbrand is a consultancy specialising in areas such as brand strategy, brand analytics and brand valuation. Kia first entered the annual rankings in 2012, coming in 87th place with a brand value of US$4.1 billion. It subsequently rose four spots to 83rd position in the 2013 study following a 15 per cent increase to US$4.7 billion. During the past year, the marque’s brand value increased by a further 15 per cent to US$5.4 billion, elevating the Korean automaker nine places to 74th position. The significant increase can be attributed to factors such as high-profile marketing activities, including sponsorship of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and the
Australian Open Tennis Championship. “We at Kia are committed to creating unsurpassed levels of customer value in the automotive industry. Our rise up Interbrand’s ‘Best Global Brands’ rankings this year is a testament to the dedication of all Kia employees worldwide to exceeding customer expectations in every area of the business,” says Hyoung-Keun ‘Hank’ Lee, vice chairman of Kia Motors Corp. According to Interbrand, as a result of Kia’s continued branding efforts, expressed in the slogan, ‘The Power to Surprise’, the manufacturer is now targeting more design-conscious consumers who value an emotional connection to their brand. This latest recognition follows Kia’s rise from 37th to 35th place on Interbrand’s list of ‘50 Best Global Green Brands 2014’ released this past June. The 2014 edition of Interbrand’s annual ‘100 Best Global Brands’ study was executed using best practice research methodology by expert analysts. ALMOAYYED MOTORS
Arrive in Style This compact premium crossover offers enthusiasts a glimpse of how the reinvented luxury brand plans to produce vehicles in the future.
102 November 2014
Almoayyed Motors, the distributor of Lincoln in Bahrain, launched the new model in sophisticated style at the Lincoln Woman This Month Fashion Show held at Block 338 in Adliya. The glitzy show saw members of Almoayyed family, dignitaries, VIPs, petrol heads and fashionistas gather to catch a glimpse of the tech-savvy new MKC, which combines elegance, comfort, power and good looks. Designed to inspire, the revamped model aims to change the way people look at Lincoln, its makers say. The sporty-looking 2015 MKC’s engine lives up to the promises its exterior design makes. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine that produces 240 horsepower at 5,500rpm and 270lb-ft of torque at 3,000rpm. With a revamped design, the MKC portrays elegance in a sporty way, yet manages to carry on the DNA that has made Lincoln such a popular brand in the market since its creation. From its signature split-wing grille defined by high-intensity discharge headlights to its hands-free, wraparound lift gate featuring full-width LED tail lamps, the MKC stands out from the small premium utility crowd. The car’s high beltline and low shoulders create a sturdy, athletic presence; its pedestal side mirrors give a hint of elegance. Features such as soft exterior
lighting and an available Panoramic Vista glass roof add to the car’s luxurious ambience. The onboard gadgets and gizmos are the area where this model shines brightest. MKC has an ‘approach detection’ feature that can sense an approaching owner from up to nine feet away and respond by illuminating ‘welcome mats’ on the ground next to the front doors, along with the headlamps and door handle pockets. It also utilises SYNC with MyLincoln Touch, a tool that enhances interaction by using voice and touch commands to control different media. The vehicle is equipped with a collision warning brake support, a lane-keeping system and a driver’s assist to help avoid common accidents. It also introduces Active In and Out Park Assist that helps drivers manoeuvre out of tight parking spaces. A Blind Spot Information System continuously monitors blind spots using high-tech radar sensors. This model’s blend of innovative designs and useful technologies aims to make ownership a tasteful experience. Prices start from BD17,495. Apple of my eye It didn’t get the greatest reception when it was launched in September, but enough time has passed for people to get over the kinks and get involved with all its innovations. The iPhone 6 is a staple of modern technology, evolving to make our lives easier and sleeker.
Back to the future The Monitor Audio i-deck 200 has exceptional audio quality and a bargain price to go with it. Perhaps it’s the design of the speakers that produces its sound, but its cool shape will sit anywhere.
Cranium craze Want to shock and scare? The Jarre AeroSkull won’t disappoint. Another party favourite, its speakers will spike up the atmosphere and look really hot in a bachelor pad. It’s available in 11 different hues and is a real conversation starter.
Cycle smart With the Pyle Smart Bicycling Computer you can train better and more efficiently as you’ll be fed a detailed performance analysis. When you’re done with the bike, just connect the device to your computer and see detailed maps and graphs to chart your performance.

Jazz It Up Who doesn’t love a rousing number that harks back to the likes of Sinatra and Armstrong? Jazz is the ultimate mood setter, lobby filler and a component of powerful social history.
Cheek to Cheek – Lady Gaga What’s the story?
Lady Gaga, as we know, is one to shock. While you won’t find slabs of meat on the cover of Cheek to Cheek, you’ll uncover a unique partnership with jazz veteran Tony Bennett. Wanting to tick everything off her list, Lady Gaga swaps the electric guitars for the horns and trombones to show how versatile she is. Joining forces with Lady Gaga is a way to keep Tony in the books and reinvent himself alongside a pop diva. He has already worked with k.d. lang in A Wonderful World; so he knows what it’s like singing with someone many years his junior.
Worth a listen?
Expect to be reunited with some die-hard jazz classics made famous by many a singer over time. Lady Gaga lends her highregister vocals to Tony Bennett’s middle range tone and they work a treat together. It’s really great to hear her voice without the drone of many effects interfering with what is a huge amount of vocal talent. Just because Tony is 88, don’t think he’s lagging behind her in the vocal department – he’s got a lot of vibrancy left in his chords. Of course he has a much raspier tone than in his younger years, but considering it is jazz, it’s appropriate!
Verdict: If you’re one of Lady Gaga’s little monsters, be loyal and follow her on this latest musical adventure.
Top Track: It Don’t Mean a Thing and Nature Boy
eLLinGTon AT neWporT: The oriGinAL ALbuM – Duke eLLinGTon AnD hiS orCheSTrA FreSh – MinA AGoSSi
Now we’re talking smooth, easy listening jazz. Mina Agossi is a frontrunner of modern jazz and a vocal powerhouse at that. Half-French and half-Beninese, she spent her youth studying in and travelling to Niger, Morocco and the Ivory Coast. Although she hasn’t got a mainstream status (which is why we like her), she is on an upward trajectory. The album has a plucky sound with lovely strings that weave in and out of the melodies. Rewind is sung in both French and English and has an upbeat spring to it. Mina sounds as sweet and fun as she looks. www.bahrainthismonth.com
Ske-DAT-De-DAT: The SpiriT oF SATCh – Dr. John Exactly what the doctor ordered – Dr. John. This tribute to jazz legend Louis Armstrong pays tribute to a massive cannon of trumpeter greats: Louis Armstrong, Terence Blanchard, Wendell Brunious and James Andrews. The album features well-known songs such as Mack the Knife and Dippermouth Blues, which may not suit jazz purists because Dr. John revs it up spirituality.
One of the greatest jazz stories ever. Duke Ellington is, to many, the father of jazz. In this live recording from 1955, Duke attacks the genre with heartpumping energy. Featuring Newport Up and Jeep’s Blues, the album croons and swoons across oozing notes. This revised album takes away the flawed sounds of the original recording, which had some crackles and muffled sounds; but this restores all the thrills of a live recording. You can sway, shake and tap to this roaring album. November 2014 119
games
Game On For November, we’ve highlighted some revamped old-time favourites and a selection of eclectic choices for some long-awaited Friday gameplay.
Gauntlet What Is It?:
The original 1985 Gauntlet had plenty of memorable elements. For those who need a refresh, an iconic quartet of co-op heroes hunts for keys and badly needed food. The 2014 remake pays respect to the original, but lacks the bravery needed to make it worth playing more than a couple of times.
Graphics:
While the view is zoomed out far further than any previous Gauntlet, it’s still not big enough to contain a full team’s insanity on higher-difficulty settings. Whether playing locally on the same PC or online, it’s easy to lose sight of your small character amongst the chaos, or even behind the health metres.
Super Smash Bros The best loved game of all time is back in Smash 3DS with a four-player brawl packed with fast fun. It is decades of Nintendo mascots compiled into a ‘pick up and play’ portable game. From the start, the variety of the 36-character roster is impressive; 12 more fighters are unlocked over time. 120 November 2014
VERDICT: There’s a lot of modernday replay-friendly adventure to it, but it doesn’t balance well enough with the nostalgic arcade experience.
Gameplay: The biggest enemy
encountered is not necessarily a ghost or a giant; it’s a sense of unpredictability. Each set of levels in the three worlds unfolds in the same way. The bosses are a nice change of pace as they enter at the end of each world. Every one requires a different tactic than the standard ‘never stop attacking’ strategy that conquers every other foe. While it can be fun to take half a dozen hours to complete a run, that’s all there is to it.
Shadow of Mordor If you want to have full power without having to sacrifice the fear of defeat, enter Middle Earth! It’s got free-flowing combat, a good-sized, good-looking open world full of Lord of the Rings lore and an intriguing hierarchy of enemies that every victory and defeat more meaning. The graphics are immense and full of gory decapitations.
Wasteland 2 PA competent live-action cut scene introduces us to a band of grizzly bearded biker types and hard-eyed women. The flashy cut scene is one of Wasteland 2’s nods to the modern era. If you’re in a hurry, you’ll see only the highlighted keywords and objectives you need to complete your mission. www.bahrainthismonth.com
websites VERDICT: The products are, for the most part, interesting but ultimately it’s just another way to fund things that are pretentious.
Outgrow.me What Is It?
This is a marketplace for successfully crowd-funded products. You’ll find an incredible selection of innovative and creative products designed by visionary entrepreneurs. By purchasing from Outgrow. me, you’re supporting a movement of creative design and maintaining the momentum of hard-working start-ups.
The Good:
If you’re into quirky offbeat objects outside the normal realms of product design, your thrills start now. The products available are innovatively created to add ease to your life. For example, the Handleband is a split strap that can be attached to your bicycle handle for your phone to sit in snugly. Another interesting find is the Ostrich Pillow Light, which is a unique napping device designed to allow you to catch a few winks on the go. It wraps around your eyes and is a pillow for the head. Genius.
The Bad:
If you’re looking for anything and everything, this is not really as everyday as Amazon. It’s restricted to a niche market and at times is a bit too arty. Sometimes it’s OK to not have solutions to things that don’t really matter that much anyway. A lot of the products look like they won’t really enhance our life.
Coffitivity.com Are you one to listen to music when working? Do you need a specific sound in the background? Or do you prefer no noise at all? Coffitivity.com has sounds that increase your creativity. If you need the presence of others to get down to work, you can have the sounds of ‘morning murmur’ to get the day started. If you’re in a scholarly mood and need to get a lot of writing done, ‘university undertones’ should give you that collegiate atmosphere. www.bahrainthismonth.com

apps
Run fOR YOuR app If you’re serious about getting in shape, you need to manage your progress. While these apps won’t replace gym equipment, they will put you on the right track.
NIke+ RuNNING RaTING: ***** What Is It?
The Nike+ Running app tracks your runs and helps you reach your goals, whether you’re easing your way into a new running routine or training for a marathon. You’ll get the measurement and motivation you need to go further than you thought possible. It holds all the data you need to understand how to progress and outperform your previous runs.
The Good:
TGPS. Having this feature provides users with a map that shows them how fast or slow they are running at a particular time. The app keeps up with the runner by plotting the route on a map, which is visible during and after a run. While you can have a motivator voice to shout words of encouragement as you pound the pavement, there’s also an online community for you to compare your track records. If you post your progress on social media, you can get support from friends and followers to spur you on.
The Bad:
The accuracy of the GPS varies from smartphone to smartphone; therefore you might find that it has placed you a couple of kilometres out. Of late, the app has had some issues syncing with Facebook. Since IOS 8 was launched there are some additional kinks with regards to syncing music. However, with the variety of graphs and infographics displaying your progress, goals will be met.
Verdict:
Nike+ Running is layered with features, professional and free.
ShORTS: Couch-to-5k
122 November 2014
Are you at one with the couch? Do you want to get yourself into a routine of running but can’t face parting with the cushions and the box? This app gives you a gentle push in the right direction. It is perfect for those who don’t want to ruin their body by launching too fast into a runner’s lifestyle. We love Couch-to-5K because it’s realistic and begins with lovely walks and then slowly takes you up to jogging or running levels.
iSmoothRun Pro
This app strips it down to baseline practical elements. It is technical about tracking walking, running, cycling and any fitness activity. One of the best and most useful features iSmoothRun Pro has is Auto Pause. If you’ve had to stop at a traffic light or want to take in the views at the top of a panoramic summit, Auto Pause will start automatically as soon as you’re on the move again.

movies VERDICT: Go for a laugh; then forget about it.
hORRIBle BOSSeS 2 DIReCTeD BY: Sean anders STaRRING: Jennifer aniston, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day
The Plot:
Dale, Kurt and Nick are back. They decide to start their own business, but things don’t go as planned. A slick investor puts a spanner in the works, which prompts the trio to pull off a harebrained and misguided kidnapping scheme.
Worth Watching? Bringing back the crude comedy for
another round of psychopathic mind games, Horrible Bosses 2 finds ways to out-lewd the original. You immediately get the Hangover vibe with this sequel, where the male bravado and the female sex object, Jennifer Aniston no less, are placed in typical fashion. This is always the problem with sequels: they just rehash the success of the original and add some more one-liners that often feel misplaced and forced.

English mathematician and logician Alan Turing helps crack the Enigma code during World War II. Based on a real life story, it’s a race against time for Alan and his team at Britain’s topsecret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park during the gloomiest days of the war.
The hotly anticipated instalment of The Hunger Games is coming this November. Katniss Everdeen is in District 13 after she shatters the games forever. DINING
NOUVELLE CUISINE ANKITA MAMGAIN The latest addition to Bahrain’s culinary scene, this new restaurant creatively combines traditional French fine dining and global gastronomy.
I
t seems like a good direction, towards uncharted territory; it is certainly adventurous yet promising. French cuisine, famous for its painstaking sophistication, pea-sized portions and a sort of feverish caution, akin to what might be employed in preserving a rare bloodline, is coming of age. As is the case in most cosmopolitan societies, it’s hard to remain untouched by global influences. From fashion to food, we’re all world citizens now, and the French are following suit. The evolving aromas of Parisian fusion have found a home in the Kingdom at Engie’s Restaurant and Café. Located at Seef Corner, this venue promises a decadent surprise. Elegant colours and plenty of natural light make the ambience airy, fresh and relaxing. The beige and ochre colour scheme is beautifully accented by the wooden texture of the floor. Walls feature ornate mirrors and numerous picture frames that lend a classic charm to this chic restaurant — all very French! www.bahrainthismonth.com
This spacious eatery, spread across two floors, can accommodate more than 250 people. It replaces the intimidating atmosphere, often expected from a high-end restaurant, with a warm, comfortable and home-like setting. The menu at Engie’s Restaurant and Café is an ingenious combination of time-honoured French recipes with a powerful infusion of eclectic flavours from across the world. Immaculately arranged on a plate, these are culinary equivalents of haute couture that ever so often surprise you with tastes closer to home. Fine-quality ingredients and the innovation of chef Olivier Catora and chef Eric have resulted in a unique menu. Enjoy Viennoiserie, such as freshly buttered croissants, Danish pastries and the beautifully light and flaky pain au chocolat. From l`êle aux épices, which is lentil soup with crispy fried calamari, to souvenir de Bali, a tempura preparation, packed with oriental flavours, it’s a gourmet rollercoaster all the way.
ALSO THIS MONTH: 126 HAPPENINGS 130 AT YOUR SERVICE 134 ABSOLUTELY ARABIC
The dessert section is loaded with decadent offerings, such as the chocolate fondant, served with white chocolate ice cream and custard caramel; aptly named ‘Le Wow’. The restaurant also offers gluten-free options. “We didn’t want to make the food completely French. People sometimes have preconceived notions about the cuisine, like frog legs or overly complicated dishes. We wanted to break away from that stereotype,” says chef Olivier. Everything on the menu is prepared fresh, right down to the breads, cookies and confectionery. “Our strength lies in the fact that all items are made in-house. We do not use anything prepacked, including the butter which is churned every day,” he adds. The venue is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As part of an ongoing promotion you can enjoy a complimentary mocktail during lunch hours, from noon until 3pm from Sunday to Thursday. Call 17 580-028. November 2014 125

Chef Frederic Simonin
SOFITEL BAHRAIN ZALLAQ THALASSA SEA & SPA
Hallmark of Excellence Located by the shores of the azure waters of Zallaq, this five-star property plays host to a culinary genius and invites you to experience a new world of gastronomic decadence.
128 November 2014
An inimitable Michelin-star experience comes to the Kingdom at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. Celebrated chef Frederic Simonin, who boasts four of the coveted stars, makes a stopover at the luxury property from November 11 to 15 on his first visit to the region. This gives residents a rare chance to experience his ultra-refined gastronomy. A modern Parisian chef, Frederic Simonin discovered his passion for cooking when he was just 15-years-old as a trainee in Saint-Brieuc. His prolific career began as a commis at Ledoyen with Ghislaine Arabian before experience in some of the most prestigious restaurants in Europe, including Le Meurice, Taillevent and Le George V, working alongside Philippe Legendre. In 2002 he became the chef of Ledoyen, which was later renamed Le Seize Au Seize, and received his first Michelin star. His second star was awarded in 2006 while working at La Table de Joël Robuchon. Later in 2006, Frederic made a move to London to start Joël Robuchon’s restaurant chain, where he got two Michelin stars. In 2010, he opened his own restaurant, named after himself; it received a Michelin star the following year. Developing his taste for fine cuisine at a young age, Frederic’s passion for experimenting with textures and techniques, and creating new dishes, came from his
desire to explore, thus triggering his aspiration to become a chef. He possesses a distinctive point of view and produces ultra-creative dishes, all the while revisiting natural flavours with subtlety and passion. His restaurant, Frederic Simonin, in Paris, is a mustvisit address in the gastronomic district. The chef impresses new and experienced food-lovers in a sophisticated setting, with breathtaking presentation and ingredients of the highest quality. Chef Frederic will be delighting guests with his unique take on French cuisine at Sofitel’s La Mer restaurant from 7pm to 10.30pm. This exquisite dinner is priced at BD38 per person. In addition to this, you are presented with the unique opportunity to enjoy a master class with the culinary maestro from 10.30am to 1.30pm in La Mer restaurant for BD24 per person. EATERY
Best of Both Worlds
ANKITA MAMGAIN Don’t be fooled by its humble name. This restaurant packs a punch with its daring menu and personality. We visited its recently opened Adliya branch.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
This ingeniously inventive restaurant is a must visit destination for true foodie’s trail. Eatery combines the culinary styles of two cultures that couldn’t be more different but have something of immeasurable significance in common — their love for food. Often the search for true aromas, flavours and textures culminates on the shores of two civilisations. Even Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love journey had these two stopovers. And when two extremely rich, powerful and individualistic entities come together, you find a venue like Eatery serving ‘Indo-Italian’ cuisine. Already a success in Saar, it was only a matter of time for this unique fare to reach other parts of the Kingdom. Now part of Adliya’s 338 district, Eatery has truly arrived as a fine dining venue. Located across from Café Lilou, the restaurant is washed in Mediterranean hues that keep the space fresh and airy. The windows are large, allowing ample natural night; two statement flower arrangements welcome you as you enter. A single storey venue, Eatery has plenty of outdoor seating where you can enjoy the pleasant winter evenings. The painted vines on the ceiling and the zebra-striped chairs add a touch of exuberance to the ambience. As the Bahrain This Month team was greeted with Eatery’s signature grape juice, we’re assured that this experience would be full of surprises. The menu has retained traditional elements and techniques of both culinary schools. However, the compound result of the two carves a niche of its own. A good example is the rainbow salad: a mix of beans, chickpeas, corn kernels and lamb patties, served on a bed of lettuce with yoghurt dressing. A generous garnish of saffron takes it to another level. The famous
Krack Jack biscuit meets grilled hammour and cream cheese to form another interesting appetiser. For mains, a must-try dish is the Eatery grilled chicken. Succulent fillets of chicken are served with a creamy yoghurt-based sauce and a choice of rice, chips or potato mash. The mash is infused with the earthy flavours of saffron. The second dish, penne alfredo has a creamy sauce, the texture of which we were told comes from using cashew nut paste, without flour at all. The restaurant saves the best for last. The grand finale comprises desserts, especially the tiramisu, served in a margarita glass. Mango-lovers must try the mango bravo: a rich mousse made of fine alphonsos and served with caramelised apricots. The Eatery is open from 11am until 11pm daily, and until midnight on weekends. THE DOMAIN BAHRAIN
At Your Service The ‘stay-work-play’ property is set to bring its inimitable experience to the comfort of your home. This new dining concept will change your dinner parties forever.
130 November 2014
The much-awaited winter is here. As the festive season picks up, the island sees a number of house parties being organised. Each time you call a special gathering, you want to do something new, something out of the box and you know it cannot be the latest post you and your friends read on a blog. Be it a dinner for your new boss, a gathering with your friends or just a special party thrown for your close associates, The Domain Bahrain takes the pressure out of your day, so you can concentrate on looking great and having a good time. Dinner Transportable is a unique service that targets those who appreciate fine dining and are really meticulous when it comes to hosting parties. Expect nothing less than perfection as the hotel brings the ambience of its word-class social venues to your home. Designed for smaller groups, a maximum of 20 persons, this is a highly-customised service that brings elegance and exclusivity to your event. “The basic idea is that you can have the restaurant in the comfort of your home. So instead of going out to a venue, it, along with all its features, comes to you,” says Kim Andersen, the hotel manager. “Everything that you would expect at our restaurants, the service, the quality of the food, the sophisticated presentation, the staff, the beverages and the cleaning afterwards, is all taken care of.”
The process begins with a consultation with the chef and the food and beverage operator, ideally two weeks prior to your event, where you decide the menu and the services you require. The team then visits the location, presumably your house, to get a sense of available space and supplies. The food can be selected from any of The Domain Bahrain’s restaurants — Le Sauvage, Le Domain [34], IMARI, Figs & Olives and Txoko. Dazzle your guests with live cooking stations, a sushi counter, a bar with a wide selection of cocktails and a personalised butler service. “We take the responsibility of making your party memorable. You can have a meet-and-greet session with drinks and canapés in the living room, move to the dining area for the dinner and then head to the garden for some entertainment and coffee,” says Bengt Carlsson, executive chef, The Domain Bahrain. “Our aim is to take the house party experience to a new level. We bring world-class fine dining to your homes, so you don’t have to be in five places at one time,” says Kim. “Our service staff takes care of the guests’ needs and the chefs in your kitchen dish out gourmet preparations, which are immaculately presented. When the evening is over, we leave no trace of us having ever been there. So there’s no cleaning and sorting left for you to do.” Call 16 000-000. www.bahrainthismonth.com
PAPA JOHN’S PIZZA
Papa’s Favourite
Celebrating 10 glorious years in Bahrain, this pizza chain embarks on a series of special events and new menu items to reward its loyal fans. A leading pizza chain in the region, Papa John’s continues to show that it never rests on its laurels. The restaurant has launched the
new John’s Favourite Pizza, an innovative and flavour-packed addition to an ever-expanding menu. As the name suggests, it is the founder’s favourite pizza and is a delicious combination of toppings, sauces and cheeses. With pepperoni, beef sausage, and a blend of six cheeses — mozzarella, provolone, parmesan, fontina,
asiago and romano, this is expected to be a hit with pizza-lovers. “This pizza takes flavour to a whole new level, and is a bold new addition to our exciting menu,” says Tapan Vaidya, general manager of the restaurant division at Jawad Business Group. “We have set the bar high; so there’s really nothing quite like Papa John’s Pizza in the market today.” The success of the brand is credited to the principles established by its founder, John Schnatter, way back in 1984. From fresh, sliced vegetables to hand-tossed dough and superiorquality tomato sauce, there’s no compromise on quality. The restaurant delivers on the ‘Better Ingredients, Better Pizza’ promise. Vine-ripened tomatoes, grown in the rich, fertile valleys of central California, and packed within an average of six hours after harvesting, give the sauce a rich and unique flavour. Sliced daily, and never vacuum-packed, the vegetables used at Papa John’s outlets are always fresh and flavourful. “Quality has always been on the top of the list of priorities. The single most important element driving Papa John’s is passion,” says Tapan. Call 17 506-070.

dining LUMEE STREET CAFE
Absolutely Arabic
This new restaurant is following in the footsteps of the island’s most successful chains, delivering your favourite comfort food with a twist.
134 November 2014
Al Abraaj Restaurants Group has launched a new café that captures the exciting experience of traditional street eateries in a buzzing, contemporary venue. Lumee Street Cafe presents popular Arabic staples in a modern and casual dining setting. The inspiration for the concept comes from the region’s street grub hubs, like Bahrain’s smoky street grills, Egypt’s colourful falafel carts and Turkey’s tea and coffee houses. The restaurant takes traditional dishes and adds a contemporary twist to appeal to today’s diners. The menu is filled with classic options, such as hummus and tikka, as well as new creations like spicy mattai salad or quinoa kebbe. Lumee combines a café with a deli to give visitors the option to dine-in or take away the food of their choice. The name Lumee is Bahraini slang for lemons and lime; it reflects the flavour-packed, fresh and zesty cuisine served at the venue. It also highlights the fact that lemons are an integral part of many dishes in the region.
The parent company of successful chains, such as Al Abraaj, Al Bindaira Café and NuAsia, Al Abraaj Restaurants Group adds Lumee to its culinary roster and the management is excited about the new venture. “Al Abraaj Restaurants has a long track record of introducing new concepts to local diners. Every time we launch a new restaurant we aim to give our customers something new to experience,” says director of Al Abraaj Restaurants Group. The menu has been created in colaboration with award-winning chef, Chris Barber. His career encompasses many aspects of the food business with experience in both high street cafés and Michelinstar restaurants in the UK. “The idea was to add an international touch to classic Middle Eastern grills, breads, salads and mezze,” says Chris. “We haven’t reinvented the wheel because, clearly, we have some awesome talent and excellent restaurants within the Al Abraaj family. However, Lumee is a little different from the norm.” The warm and rustic decor of the place gives you a homely feel, while the seating has been designed to allow for a cosy, comfortable and sharing experience. In addition to the menu, Lumee offers an amazing array of local products and produce: pickled lemons, authentic spices and pastes, and other deli staples. Call 17 333-747. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Relax among the olive trees and soak up the atmosphere while sharing some tapas with friends under the stars. Lagoon Living Amwaj Lagoon provides a wide selection of restaurants to suit any occasion and all tastes. Almost all eateries extend the seating to the gardens and the terrace outside. Some of the restaurants present are The Houseboat, Persian Room, Veranda, Pizza Express, Al Forno and Chaise Café. The Esquires Coffee House located in Saar, Awali and Juffair offers organic food in an open-air setting. Your turn now Here are a few ideas to help you organise your own outdoor dining area. • Find a suitable location to set up. An ideal place would be sheltered from winds and fierce sun, spacious enough to accommodate the desired number of guests. Avoid facing blank, dull features such as a concrete wall; if it’s unavoidable, cover them with plants or decorative items. • Choose a suitable table and chair setting. The table and chairs should be capable of resisting the weather. • Decorate simply. A tablecloth, some flowers and lanterns are items suitable for an outdoor table. Remember that you will have to take all these items from the inside to outdoors and vice versa, so minimise the labour by being smart about your choices. • Cold food is often an easier choice than hot food, unless you have a barbecue or warming pad near to the table. A mixture of barbecued food with salads, works well for al fresco dining. November 2014 139

Playing with Clay Children learn best when learning is made fun for them. Ghada Al Ghayeb’s studio in A’ali offers both kids and adults a chance to shape beautiful worlds with their hands.
Those who have visited Jumping Clay studio at Riyadat Mall will find that few things can be as relaxing and fun as kneading a ball of colourful clay into shapes of your desire. “Jumping Clay is designed as an educational franchise that offers a window into the magical world of 3D learning,” says Ghada Al Ghayeb. We’ve developed special programmes for schools, nurseries and institutions. Each lesson has a specific learning objective. These range from the easy material for the young ones, like rolling a ball to learn shapes, to more complex topics, like global warming and prehistoric men for older kids. We like to call this concept ‘Learn through Play’.” The mother-of-two from Hamad Town discovered Jumping Clay while on holiday in Thailand. Before she launched the venue, she trained in clay modelling in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as all franchisees of the brand are required to hold a certificate from the Jumping Clay Institute of Art. The studio has been a popular venue for kids’ and adults’ birthday parties as well as for baby showers. Ghada stresses that Jumping Clay has some of the safest, lightest and best clay products in the world. “Our clay has been tested to the highest international standards and has passed major tests for quality and safety. It has even passed safety food regulations. So while we do not recommend that you eat it, it is harmless if accidentally ingested. Jumping Clay has also been approved as the most eco-friendly clay product,” she adds. Launched by Bahrain Development Bank (BDB) along with the Supreme Council for Women, Riyadat Mall is the region’s first business incubator centre for women. i Visit info@jumpingclaybh.com.

JOZ SALON & SPA
The Classic Look The French manicure has been around for decades. While it has evolved into several new versions, this salon believes if it ain’t broke; don’t fix it.
162 November 2014
Legend has it that Cleopatra wore red nail polish. Colour can say so much. Red lips say ‘daring’, a black gown says ‘timeless’, and a white sundress says ‘fresh’. Neon says “I wasn’t around in the ‘80s.” And a French manicure? It’s neutral, understated and goes with absolutely anything. You see it almost as much today as you did in the ‘30s. Whether it truly is French is up for debate. Some say the ever-stylish Parisians were the first to wear the nude base with crisp, white tips. Others say Max Factor invented it and the ‘French’ label is there for effect. After all, fashionista do love Paris. Wherever it came from, the French manicure has remarkable staying power. Some fashion experts say it’s very ‘last decade’, but women all over the world still walk into salons and request the elegant standby: pink, beige or nude base tipped with pure white.
The French manicure goes easily from work to drinks to the red carpet. It can also be one of those make-up tricks that make you look naturally, effortlessly perfect. People standing 10 feet away may wonder if your beautiful nails are polished at all. Truly effortless, though, they are not. French manicures require a steady hand and real precision if they’re going to look good. It is not a quick paint-and-go manicure, but it’s doable with some practice. The experts at Joz Salon & Spa save you the trouble as they have mastered the art of the French manicure. They follow all the steps to achieving perfectly manicured nails with precisely applied white tips. i Call 16 031-120, 17 369-133 or 17 756-449. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Dress Your House The high-end brand from Italy’s largest furniture house has launched its first collection of bedroom furniture. The harmony of opposites — day and night, conviviality and silence, liveliness and calm — is the guiding light behind Natuzzi Italia’s new concept of living. The bedroom collection called Piuma was created with the assistance of prestigious designers Claudio Bellini and Manzoni and Tapinassi from the StudioMEMO, who also were responsible for the flagship models of the living area collection. Piuma represents the iconic product within the range of beds, a model that transmits a feeling of utter softness and comfort from the first glimpse. Like a pillow, the original detail of the ‘volant’, available in leather and in fabric, makes it the perfect product for dreaming. This encompasses the entire elegant profile of the bed. But Natuzzi Italia’s bedroom furnishing range does not end with beds. A complete collection has been developed, featuring dressers and containers of various sizes and bedding options. The bed collection reinforces the core Natuzzi brand values — unparalleled comfort, quality, style and the ‘Made in Italy’ appeal. The six bed models and three bed linen ranges use a variety of unique, eyecatching elements in line with the concept of living promoted by its home furnishings group. You can find the Natuzzi Italia collection exclusively at Phoenicia Décor in Seef. Call 17 564-444.

Oct 22 – Nov 21 Many of you can expect a lot of things to go your way this month, so long as you put a little effort behind anything you plan to do. First up is to look at your current work situation as there are changes afoot – changes you have been aware of for some time. How you meet the challenges they bring about will be determined by how well prepared you are. Those who have already been developing a plan of action will be fine. Those who have decided instead to leave matters to the last minute may struggle initially. Card of the Month — Two of Wands For a detailed, personalised Tarotscope reading, contact Raphael by email: raphael@tarotscope.org.uk
SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 21 That nagging doubt resting at the back of your head is there for a reason. You should trust your instincts because it looks like your concerns over a new romance appear to be justified – in part at least. It is best to get things out in the open now, rather than leave them for later when matters may be much more complicated. You can be more trusting than is wise when it comes to relationships. Do yourself a favour; exercise a little caution. Card of the Month — Six of Coins
CAPRICORN December 22 – January 21 Generally you are quite easy-going. There aren’t usually many people in your life that can get under your skin to the point of true frustration. This month, you could come across the exception to that rule in the form of a rather irritating business associate you have been forced to work with. It makes matters worse that this was not a union of choice. All I would say is tread carefully; there is a hidden agenda at work here and what might be fairly transparent on the outside could have other motivations at its heart. Card of the Month — Five of Wands 166 November 2014
AQUARIUS January 21 – February 20 There are two possible paths for many of you this month, both deal with romance. For some, November will represent the cementing of a relationship and the possibility of taking matters with a loved one to a new level. For others, there is the chance that a fresh romance will whisk you off your feet. There will be much for you to celebrate up to the end of the year. Work-wise, if you have been debating an opportunity presented to you, now could be the time to take the plunge and follow your instincts. Card of the Month — Eight of Wands
PISCES February 21 – March 20 The last few months have been pretty slow for you on the career front. Those who have recently made a switch could be questioning whether it was the right move. However, November will see all of that changing as a raft of new opportunities arrive to kick-start your work drive. You are likely to enjoy an uninterrupted flow of business. As far as relationships go, you could find that a partner is likely to be more needy than usual. You will be expected to provide a fair level of support to their struggling confidence. Card of the Month — Temperance
ARIES March 21 – April 20 The Ace of Coins heralds the start of promising things in relation to finance. November will bring a work opportunity your way, which may improve your income handsomely. A colleague, who has been away for some time will return with a business proposition that really is as good as it sounds. There are less favourable omens concerning water this month. You should take care near pools or the sea. The colour red has a role to play in a missing heirloom. You might find yourself on the wrong end of some unkind suspicions. Card of the Month — The Ace of Coins
TAURUS April 21 – May 20 A positive light floods your sign. A young child will give you good reason to feel proud as an achievement at school comes to light. Also, you could find yourself in for a pat on the back at work as your keen eye spots an error that could end up saving money for the company. On the home front there could be a little light DIY going on towards the end of the month as a long overdue job is finally tackled. The 29th could see you take a short break away, but just make sure you take an extra change of clothes! Card of the Month — The Sun
GEMINI May 21 – June 20 After a fairly hectic October you can look forward to a more subdued November, although that isn’t to say there won’t be a few eventful things happening. Of chief importance for you is the imbalance that has suddenly appeared in your family environment. A child is unsettled at school. Don’t ignore what they are trying to tell you because they are going to need your help to get through it all. Finances could be stretched for the next couple of months; so be prepared to tighten that belt! Card of the Month — Nine of Swords www.bahrainthismonth.com
advertisers index Fashion & Footwear
CANCER June 21 – July 20 November could be a bit fiery as you clash with a relative in a fairly big way. You are going to have to bite the bullet on a few issues you don’t want to accept because the person in question doesn’t look like budging at all. Financially, things could be a little lean for you in the run up to the end of the year. On the work front you could find yourself struggling to stay focused following a rather slow period. However, it’s set to really get busy from the start of December, so enjoy the calm before the storm. Card of the Month — Five of Swords
LEO July 21 – August 21 Money is the primary subject on your mind this month. A family member’s request for financial assistance could surprise you a little. Sound judgement and some careful planning could help find a solution. On the romance front, a partner’s revealing comments are likely to shatter your illusions when it comes to any prospective holiday plans. You will have to put some contingency arrangements in place at the last minute. Finally, any health concerns relating to a back problem should be attended to. Card of the Month — Six of Cups
VIRGO August 22 – September 21 There aren’t many signs more ambitious or driven than yours. This isn’t always a good thing. November is likely to be all about making a choice. It won’t be easy, but you can’t live your life in two different camps. Right now, the demands of a partner are in conflict with your demands at work and you have to face up to the fact that there is only space for one or the other at present. On the health front, watch for an issue with your right leg or foot: a past injury hasn’t healed as well as it could have. Card of the Month — Four of Cups
LIBRA September 22 – October 21 It might be worth taking your chances with a slightly unorthodox idea this month, even though most of your colleagues will think you crazy. You’re not the kind of person who is afraid of taking risks so go with your instincts on this one. If you believe you can achieve your goal and are prepared to put in the work then the rewards will be plentiful. On the romance front, your partner could be sending out signals of perhaps wanting to move in with you. You should think carefully before making any kind of commitment. Poverty of Ambition
JAMES CLAIRE One of the biggest quotes of the nineties came from the movie Jerry Maguire, when Tom Cruise taught us all to say, “Show me the money!”

Sadly, bankers’ greed in the 20 years since the movie has changed many of our perspectives on the value of the paper we call currency and life savings. As American President Barack Obama rightly states: “Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself, that you realise your true potential.” Today, being rich for me is having just enough in the bank not to have to check the balance on a daily basis. Any more and I’d worry what to do with it or do worse and spend it frivolously. I have worked for much of my life in an industry that pays certain individuals very well and the remainder of the industry very poorly. The hospitality industry is one that expects great things from people, but rewards them poorly. Sadly, I see many people, especially the young, running for overseas positions because it pays more. Yes, the cash rewards are there, but only for 16-hour shifts seven-days-a-week. I feel saddened for those who have to leave children and loved ones as they have little choice but to go overseas. They always say that money can’t buy happiness. For many years, I refused to believe that a billionaire would not be laughing all the way to the bank on a daily basis. Then I woke up one day and realised that everything we do and buy is only short- and long-term rentals. We buy houses which we leave behind. We buy
clothes, but are only dressed in one set when lowered into the earth. We can have a house full of gadgets; sadly everything remains behind and does not come with us. Living in the Gulf region for expats has always been a sacrifice. We live on a desert island to enjoy the freedom from taxation in our own countries. We certainly aren’t here for the view, are we? I have a friend who has been contemplating leaving the Middle East as he feels isolated from the rest of the world and wishes to not be forgotten. The thing is that every job he seeks pays well for the outside world, but still does not live up to his expat salary. Bahrain has been my friend’s home for nearly a decade. So when do you leave? When is enough, enough? Does money rule or does the heart? His heart is in his homeland; so too is his family. Yet he finds it difficult wrestling with the decision of family over salary. No amount of coaxing can teach my friend the path he needs to take. I believe the time comes to us all. One day, we realise the quest for cash has wasted much of the valuable time we don’t have and that living a real life, even at a cost, makes us all far richer. Freedom comes from the mind, not the wallet. True enlightenment is learning to live without being contained within the needs and wants of a dollarbased society. In our youth we are taught to be ambitious. Wouldn’t it be great to do so without chasing money and yet find our real potential? www.bahrainthismonth.com
