Open letter to the LSESU Board of Trustees
W
e, former writers and editors of The Beaver and members of student newspapers from around the country are calling upon the London School of Economics Students’ Union (LSESU) to restore its annual grant to the Media Group. We are deeply saddened and concerned to hear that starting next year, The Beaver will receive no secure, guaranteed financial support from the LSESU as it has historically done so to expense its printing, website, and other essential costs.

T
his might be the last time that I write for The Beaver. Because of a lack of funding from the SU, this issue might be the last time any student ever writes for The Beaver. In 1949, on Thursday 5 of May, the paper was published for the very first time. It has since seen many different covers, many
different editors and many different staff writers. But the lesser-known truth, is that The Beaver started out as papers stuck on the walls of this university. All of this started out as ‘mural Beaver’ and most importantly, and always, as students fighting to get their voices heard. The Beaver has continuously provided a platform for students to fight for what they believe in. Students often are twentysomething young adults,

Without a newspaper, LSE students will be left voiceless. I have worked at The Beaver for the last three years on 14 issues with some of the most passionate people I know. LSE students have published 926 issues over 74 years while The Beaver survived LSE’s turbulent history. It is not about to end now. The Beaver will not disappear. If we have to return to being papers stuck on the walls of this university, we will.
