we imagined that patios here would be noisy and polluted from the traffic. Then I remembered Paul Reid’s 2018 Eating Out in RC restaurant review of Boteco Brasil, and what he called “probably RenfrewCollingwood’s best patio.” We arrived in time for happy hour, only to find all the patio tables had been reserved (there are fewer tables due to COVID physical distancing rules). Luckily, we scored one of their new picnic

tables on the street. Despite being on busy Nanaimo Street, the colourful fence and flower boxes made the table cozy, and the traffic didn’t bother us. The kind server described a couple different salads and we were intrigued by the Salada de Palmito ($14.95) – a hearty, delicious bowl of mixed greens, hearts of palm, tomatoes, carrots and olives with a balsamic dressing. The hearts of palm were juicy and tasted mild, like artichoke hearts. I discovered that they come from the centre of certain types of palm trees and are low in calories and rich in protein and potassium, copper and zinc. From the happy hour menu we ordered the Picanha Aperitivo ($14 during happy hour or $17.50), consisting of tasty, tender pieces of sirloin steak topped with carmelized onion and served with farofa (toasted cassava flour), salsa and fries. These two dishes, along with our cool drinks, served on the patio, did indeed make us happy that summer afternoon. You’ve got to experience it for yourself.
