Then there are the people who make a difference – from the unique ways they support superior healthcare to the medical professionals who go above and beyond to deliver it. The impact of your donations grows stronger as we come closer to fully funding the Campaign. Speaking of impact, we’re excited to announce that the names of those who are among the generations of generosity, are now inscribed on the Donor Recognition Wall at Banner Boswell Medical Center, and soon to be at Banner Del E. Generations of Generosity Acts of kindness and generosity are being passed from one generation to the next. Susan Webster’s story reflects two generations of generosity inspired by her late mother, Jean Van Vleck. Generosity expressed with donations of time, talent, treasure and testimony. Moving to Sun City West from Michigan was Jean’s dream, and she and Susan’s father, John, moved in 1986. Susan was there to welcome them. She arrived first. “It was in mom’s blood to volunteer,” says Susan. After doing her homework, she chose to volunteer at Boswell Hospital (now Banner Boswell Medical Center), in the Emergency Department, and for 10-plus years kept families of patients up-to-date on their loved ones. “She loved giving back.”

Susan recalls the time when Jean had pneumonia and was on the receiving end of the hospital’s support during her stay at Boswell. “Every day, mom’s fellow volunteers included a thoughtful message or craft item on her food tray.” After her recovery, Jean never forgot the support and the quality of care she received. She made a donation to Sun Health Foundation to honor her older sister, Olga, who was like a grandma to Susan. And, while her Trust had already been completed, one day she announced to Susan, “I just signed something that upon my death a gift will be made, in support of the Boswell Emergency Department, to Sun Health Foundation.” “This is a charity my mom believed in because donations actually help where they are supposed to help,” says Susan. Susan is honoring Jean’s wishes in support of superior healthcare through the Generosity for Generations Campaign. Her donation is being commemorated with an inscription on an artistic leaf attached to a beautiful tree on Banner Boswell’s new Donor Recognition Wall. “When I learned about the opportunity to fund a leaf on this Wall just down the hall from the Emergency Department, I couldn’t believe the beautiful connection.”

From left: Susan Webster, Olga V. Look, and Jean Van Vleck

To her delight, Susan also learned she could select a turquoise leaf – her mom’s favorite color.

Susan Webster

Susan has been so inspired by her mother’s generosity that she changed her Trust too to make Sun Health Foundation one of her beneficiaries because that’s what Jean loved. “Mom was the most caring, giving person. Things that mom loved, I loved because I saw them through her eyes. Mom’s generosity taught me to be generous too.” Susan also donates her time as a volunteer at various organizations and is a commissioner for the Arizona Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This is in addition to her job as a realtor. “If our story helps make more people aware of the lasting impact of generosity, then I’m happy to share with others.”

Valley Teen Inspires A New Generation of Generosity Nina Rawal continues to amaze! You may remember Nina. Last year, the teen was featured in the news for her exceptional volunteerism. Today, she continues to make an impact in her community in new ways with her efforts to help those in need, and serves as an inspiring example of a new generation of generosity.

At 16, the Xavier Preparatory School junior already has made more of an impact in the community than many young adults her age. Through Caring About Seniors, an organization she created last year, Nina has demonstrated time and again her generous heart for helping others as a volunteer with her donations of time, talent, and treasure – all of which to support those in need. Through her organization, Nina has conducted bake sales, book/CD drives, spear-headed collections of donations of needed items, and more to support needs of people in senior care centers and nursing homes in Sun City, Sun City West and Surprise. In addition to all of this, Nina has helped to organize vendor fairs with her mom, hematologist/oncologist Dr. Shelly Gandhok, to raise money for charitable causes. Funds have helped provide transportation to cancer patients, and walkers, wheelchairs and other support items to seniors in the West Valley.

Nina Rawal, 16, Xavier Preparatory School

Most recently, the charitable cause she and her family chose was Sun Health Foundation for the benefit of the Emergency Department (ED) and Patient Care Transformation at Banner Boswell Medical Center through the Generosity for Generations Campaign. These events are in addition to Nina’s other projects she began last year that also include a pen-pal

program, mask donation program, and recording classical music CDs (she’s a violinist with the Phoenix Symphony) that she donates. Nina’s heart is an example of how people in the community, individuals and groups, can make an impact when they come together. This is true too about the village of support that’s needed to help fund the Generosity for Generations Campaign’s six initiatives, including the ED. Indeed, this apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, being the daughter of Dr. Gandhok and Dr. Manoj Rawal, cardiologist – both of whom practice in the West Valley. Their philosophy of helping others, evidenced by their love of serving patients and supporting families in the West Valley for more than 16 years, is inspiring the next generation. What a difference Nina is making! Sun Health Foundation honors her and the many others who are giving their all during this time. Her spirit is a true reflection of the Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign that celebrates donations of time, talent, treasure, and testimony. Learn more about the difference you can make. Visit SunHealthFoundation.org/generosity or call (623) 471-8500.

Donors Inspiring Donors

-Nelson Henderson, Farmer

to Experience the Joy of Philanthropy Upon selecting Sun Health Foundation as his charitable organization:

“From a small seed a mighty trunk may grow.”

A glimpse of Jim Greenwald’s and Gracie Carter’s journeys that inspired them to add their names to the foliage on the trees of the Donor Recognition Walls. After touring The Colonnade, a Sun Health Community:

Digital Donor Wall at Banner Boswell Medical Center

“We came. We saw. We were sold. That was the beginning of an amazing friendship and journey with Sun Health that Jim Greenwald and I feel so blessed to share. What domino effects the crusaders of Sun Health have had on my life. Once again fate brought me to meet another Sun Health crusader - Shirley Frizell. She happened to be one of my new neighbors living in my building. Knowing nothing about Surprise, the Sun Health Foundation or their connection to The Colonnade, Shirley introduced me to the Sun Health Organization. There is no way I can fully thank her and all the Sun Health “angels” who watched over Paul and me during his illness and death. Nor can I begin to repay all the service, care and comfort having Sun Health watching over us has given to me. They say God gives us what we need when we need it and I thank Him every day for leading me to my wonderful forever home/neighbors and guardians under the Sun Health umbrella.”

~ Gracie Carter

“To tell the truth, I lived at The Colonnade for four years and knew very little about the Sun Health Foundation or what it did. Over a period of four years, my late wife Linda and I spent more time at Banner Boswell Medical Center, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, and Sun Health Grandview Rehabilitation Center than we did at our home at The Colonnade. All I wanted to do was find a way to thank the doctors, nurses, and CNAs for her care. But I didn’t know how until one person who had created a Sun Health Foundation legacy, had served on a Sun Health Foundation committee, and was passionate in her desire to repay the organization for all the care her partner had received, explained it all to me. The reason I’ve shared my story, or set up my Legacy, or I’m donating my Required Minimum Distribution from my IRA, or the reason I’m talking to you now is because of Gracie Carter, a resident of The Colonnade. She walked the walk, as they say, and she talks the talk. Donors inspiring donors. One person, who is committed to Philanthropy, convincing another to follow their lead. To join them and the Sun Health Foundation in contributing to the community. It becomes a domino effect and spreads.”

~ Jim Greenwald

Growing Stock, Growing Generosity How a Gift of Stock Can Be Win-Win If you own stock that’s increased in value since you purchased it (and you’ve owned it for at least one year), you have a unique opportunity for philanthropy. When you donate securities to your favorite charity or to Sun Health Foundation, you receive the same income tax savings (if you itemize) that you would if you wrote a check to the charity, but with the added benefit of eliminating capital gains taxes on the transfer, which can be as high as 20 percent. Making a gift of securities to support Sun Health Foundation’s Mission is as easy as instructing your broker to transfer the shares. If you have the physical securities, hand-deliver or mail the certificates along with a stock power to Sun Health Foundation in separate envelopes. (Tip: Using separate envelopes protects your gift—the certificates will not be negotiable without the stock power.)

Here’s an example of how a gift of stock works: Dave owns stocks currently valued at $25,000 that he purchased for $10,000 several years ago. He would pay $2,250 in capital gains tax if he sells the securities ($15,000 X .15 capital gains tax rate). Instead, Dave decides to donate the stock rather than sell it. By doing this, Dave receives an income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of $25,000 and eliminates any capital gains tax. 16

Using assets other than cash also allows you more flexibility when planning your gift, and there are even more potential benefits if you plan your gift creatively. For example, if you aren’t ready to give up these assets during your lifetime, a gift of securities through your will or living trust allows you the flexibility to change your mind at any time. You can continue to receive dividends and participate in shareholder votes, and the securities are still yours if you need them for other expenses. Through creative gift planning, you can secure your own financial future and help support our mission. We can work with your advisors to help you plan for tomorrow and receive maximum benefits today.

Benefits: • Receive an income tax deduction for gifts of securities if you itemize. • Provide relief from capital gains tax with gifts of securities. • Help fulfill Sun Health Foundation’s Mission with your contribution.

Take the Next Step We can help clarify and document the steps to donate stock. Simply contact Gina W. Ore, Chief Philanthropy Officer, Sun Health Foundation, at (623) 471-9560 or email her at Gina.Ore@ SunHealth.org to see how this can be a win-win. Advanced Technology for Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Your charitable gifts will fund new advancements in cancer treatment and care at Banner Boswell Medical Center. Breakthrough cancer-fighting technologies are emerging. With your help, we can invest in care innovations today to meet the needs of you and your loved ones tomorrow. Your donations supporting this $6 million investment will enhance endoscopy services – diagnostic and treatment capabilities for lung and gastrointestinal conditions, including cancer. Investing in these projects will continue Sun Health Foundation’s legacy of supporting world-class healthcare in our own backyard, a medical oasis in the desert.

How You Can Make A Difference Supporting Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign is an opportunity to continue making a difference in your community. Investments in progressive and innovative cancer-fighting technologies ensure you and your loved ones benefit from the latest treatments close to home.

1 Expansion of treatment rooms and recovery space, optimizing patient care and flow 2 Innovative technologies and anesthesia capability for complex, more advanced gastrointestinal and lung care

3 State of the art robotic bronchoscopy machine, only two in Arizona with one at Banner Boswell, for complex biopsies and biopsies of smaller tumors, allowing earlier detection

4 Increased capacity for endoscopy procedures to examine pancreatic and bile ducts and to perform stenting procedures and more invasive interventions with precision technology

5 Availability for more gastrointestinal outpatient cases with expanded capacity and staffing 6 Continued investments in new equipment and technology also help recruit and retain talented medical professionals to our community

“Currently, Endoscopy rooms at Banner Boswell aren’t large enough to accommodate pulmonary and GI interventional cases, so those must be done in the OR, resulting in scheduling challenges and constrained patient volume. The new expansion will have interventional rooms, one each for pulmonary and GI cases. This technology will enhance the current lung cancer screening program, plus it allows clinicians to biopsy smaller and incidental lung nodules.” — ARCHAN SHAH, M.D., INTERVENTIONAL PULMONOLOGIST

Robot to Join the Fight Against Cancer Having shortness of breath and coughing a lot? You may need to see a pulmonary physician. Banner MD Anderson has a good team of Interventional Pulmonologists who are at the forefront of managing patients with new procedures and treatments, if indicated. If you need a biopsy, physicians might not find anything, although why wait to find out if it is something? Lung cancer is the #1 killer and can strike anyone at any time. How do I know? My name is SCOPY, soon to be the newest member of the medical team at Banner Boswell Medical Center, thanks to community support. Rather than scrubs, my attire consists of scopes, cameras, and many other components of my diagnostic technology for lung cancer. You see, I’m a robot. Specifically, I’m a robotic bronchoscopy platform, one of only two in Arizona, and located right here at one of the finest medical centers in Arizona. I’ve been told my technology is groundbreaking because difficult to reach locations in the lungs can now be reached and biopsies can be performed. No need to worry. I don’t run on my own; I’m not a TESLA. I’m controlled and navigated by skilled physicians. They have a controller that gives them precise movement to drive me through the small areas of your lungs. My small cameras enter the body, allowing access to various parts of your lungs.

My advanced technology allows access and biopsy of lung nodules in hard-to-reach-places to prove if it is a cancer. These nodules reside in deep and small places, which otherwise can make it tough for physicians to conduct a biopsy successfully. The physicians say they’d like to take a deeper look in your lungs and take some biopsies. I’m designed for complex biopsies and biopsies of smaller tumors. I’ll see you in the Endoscopy Suite at Banner Boswell. Rest assured, the generosity of others is making possible the most advanced technology for you, close to home. My robotic technology is an integral part of the Generosity for Generations Campaign’s $6 million Advanced Technology for CancerFighting Treatment and Care initiative. Investments from the community are continuing to ensure superior healthcare technology is always available for you and your loved ones. I’m here for you, because of you. Won’t you learn more? Your Financial Wellness: Ask the Expert What about that IRA? As we approach the end of the year, now is a good time to reflect on and review the wealth plan you have currently in place. When it comes to retirement planning, the SECURE Act that was passed in December 2019 established some wideranging changes to the treatment and handling of retirement accounts. A few of these key changes made were:

• The required beginning age for IRA Required

Minimum Distributions (RMD) increased to age 72 for those turning 70 ½ in 2020 or later. • The maximum age for contributions to traditional IRAs is repealed. Anyone that is still working and receives earned income can add to their retirement accounts. • The “Stretch” IRA is eliminated. Prior to the passing of the SECURE Act, an IRA beneficiary was permitted to take minimum required distributions over their lifetime and continue to grow assts inside the IRA tax deferred. Under the new rule, inherited IRAs are required to be withdrawn sooner for nonspouse beneficiaries. After the owner of an IRA or 401K participant dies, distribution to beneficiaries must be completed by the end of the tenth year following the owner’s date of death. The IRA can be withdrawn partially over the ten-year period, or the entire amount postponed and withdrawn until the required termination date. Those that are exempt from

this provision would be: spouses and minor children of the owner, chronically ill or disabled persons, and persons not more than ten years younger than the owner. For children and grandchildren inheriting an IRA, this may have an impact on the timing of disbursements and their income taxes. Your estate plan and beneficiary designations should be reviewed with your professional advisor to determine how these changes affect your legacy goals. In March 2020, the CARES Act waived the Required Minimum Distribution, providing IRA owners some flexibility and potential income tax savings for those that elected to waive their RMD in 2020. However, in March 2021, the American Rescue Act was passed and reinstated the required minimum distribution. As a result, those taking their RMD this year will likely see a larger required distribution and a potential increase in their income tax.

Look to your IRA to fulfill a charitable gift. IRA owners can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from their IRA assets directly to a qualified charity. The QCD is excluded from the donor’s taxable income. Individuals age 70 ½ and older, whether itemizing or claiming the standard deduction, can direct up to $100,000 per year tax-free from their individual retirement account to operating charities through QCDs. By

Michael Barnes reducing the IRA balance, a QCD may also reduce the donor’s taxable income in future years, lower the donor’s taxable estate, satisfy their RMD, and limit IRA beneficiaries’ tax liability.

Considering a Roth Conversion? Those considering a full or partial Roth conversion of their traditional IRA, a charitable gift can be a great strategy to reduce the income taxes created from the conversion, while supporting a charity that is important to them. By using non-IRA assets to make a planned charitable gift in the same year as a Roth conversion, could result in less taxes paid by reducing taxable income and possibly the marginal tax rate. Of course, everyone’s situation varies, therefore you will need to consult your tax and legal advisor for advice on your personal situation. Michael Barnes is Vice President of FineMark Bank & Trust. He also is a member of Sun Health Foundation’s Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Council of Professional Advisors. 21

As West Valley residents, we have uncommon bragging rights when it comes to the superior quality of health care and wellness programs close to home. Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers are recognized as two of the best hospitals in the country. In fact, people often move to the West Valley, and stay here generation after generation, for the superior health care available to them. We are actually in a “medical oasis.”

Community support makes this possible. Superior health care and wellness programs are only available for the community because of the community, thanks to generous contributions of time, talent, and treasure that totals more than $350 million and spans more than five decades. Support continues to be needed today to ensure the future of superior healthcare and wellness programs through the Generosity for Generations Campaign.

Boswell, in fact, was designated Top 100 for five straight years, a feat no other hospital in Arizona has been able to match.

The Foundation’s long-standing partnership with the community only grew stronger when Banner Health arrived in the Northwest Valley almost 10 years ago. It was natural for a philanthropic partnership to also form with Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers to continue the legacy of support for unparalleled healthcare today and for

“Sun Health champions superior healthcare. And that word “superior” was chosen very specifically. Most hospitals say they are excellent, but we want to ensure superior. We want to have available healthcare that is so good that there is no reason to go to Los Angeles or Boston or Switzerland, because the best is right here.” – Birt Kellam, Chair, Generosity for Generations Campaign

■ Banner Boswell’s Cardiovascular Program is

recognized among the top programs nationally, and considered one of the few World-Class Programs of Distinction by Medicare. ■ The top medical professionals in the country seek

out Banner Boswell and Del E. Webb to deliver superior care to patients. Examples include: – Rajeev S. Kathuria, M.D., Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgeon, Chief of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Banner Boswell, is ranked in the top 25 cardiac surgeons nationally and is considered an expert in minimally invasive valve surgery.

– The CORE Institute chose the West Valley as the starting point for their orthopedic practice and soon began an alliance with Banner Del E. Webb and Banner Boswell medical centers to provide superior orthopedic care. CORE is among the top providers of orthopedic and neurological care in Arizona.

■ Banner Boswell Medical Center has earned the

highest rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for its patient care and outcomes in isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting procedures. As a result, Banner Boswell is among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada – the only hospital in Arizona – to ever receive this recognition.

■ Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer in women.

More breast procedures are performed at Banner Del E. Webb than any other hospital in Arizona and in fact, many hospitals now send their more advanced cases here. ■ Banner Boswell’s new Emergency Department and

Patient Care Transformation: – Can now better accommodate the growing needs of our community – from 45,000 patient visits annually to up to 65,000 patient visits annually. – Has a larger lobby to accommodate social distancing – Adds 33% more patient beds – Serves as the point of entry for 80% of patients who are admitted to the hospital. 50% of those are cardiac related.

“I’ve been extremely passionate about the care we provide at Banner Boswell Medical Center -- one of the best hospitals in the country located right here in the West Valley.” – Rajeev S. Kathuria, M.D.

■ The most advanced medical procedures have been

made possible with community support. One example: the Trans Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) hybrid surgical suite at Banner Boswell for cardiac care that significantly shortens recovery time.

You can make an impact Through the Generosity for Generations Campaign, community support will ensure the future of superior healthcare, with new advancements and expanded availability of services in cancer care and treatment, emergency care, women and infant services, wellness programs, and spine health and orthopedics.
