GLITZ AND GLAMOUR words SUNNY HUBLER / photo BRIE WILLIAMS
Lisa Sherry’s signature design style is light, bright and ethereal with layers of organic texture… but in the lower level of her own Lake Norman home, she decided to design an “offseason lair” to shake things up. Lisa created a cozy spot to hibernate with games, cocktails, fireplace, sprawling sofas and chairs, a flat screen TV, and views of the lakefront. “Honestly, it felt a bit out of my comfort zone to paint a room black,” Lisa says, “but I love to push boundaries. My own homes are also design labs to test new ideas.” The entire space is dramatic and alluring, but as for how she makes it holiday-friendly? “I love the holidays, but I’m not one to force seasonal swag into a space. This space, bathed in black, is a natural for a glamorous holiday vibe… It’s adult and it’s sexy.”
Lisa’s top tips for your own at-home holiday decor: — Be unconventional: There is not a holiday décor manual. Go monochrome: Winter whites are beautiful at the holidays. The absence of color is not the absence of joy. Rather, calm spaces elevate the spirit. For me, that’s what the holidays are all about. Hunt and gather: Some of my fave holiday “decorations” are foraged in the woods. Pinecones, sticks, twigs, and berries are the stuff of wonderful garlands and ornaments. Remember, less is more: The holidays are a time to get real — be with the ones you love and leave nothing unsaid. Calm restorative spaces and decoration facilitate connection.
