Artist’s work helps define new chapter at New England’s oldest vineyard

here the bluest sky meets the greenest grass, Sam Allerton Green has set up his easel. About 10 feet ahead, tidy rows of grapevines are parted into paths, each revealing peeks of the intense blue of the Sakonnet River and the darker green landscape beyond. The location is Sakonnet Vineyard, and Green is there on a warm mid-summer evening. It’s about 6:30pm, and sunset is still a ways off, but with each passing moment, the light changes. Green’s paint palette and mixing tray are clamped to the easel, and he calmly dips bristles into pigments, muddling and mixing to capture the fleeting moment. “You’ll never get it right,” says Green, as he works to translate the verdant hue he sees onto the canvas, even though to onlookers, it’s a match.

Allerton is an abstract landscape painter based in Providence. He works primarily in oils and enjoys painting outdoors, or en plein air. In addition to participating in workshops and gallery shows, his work appears on five of Sakonnet Vineyard’s seven newly introduced wines, the first complete portfolio made at Sakonnet from start to finish under the management of married team James Davids and Marissa Stashenko. “These wines represent a new direction for the vineyard, not only in the winemaking , but for the brand as a whole,” says Stashenko, director of operations. “Our goal was for each bottle to feel beautiful and distinctive, while still feeling connected as a collection. We wanted the artwork on each label to evoke something about the character of the wine – its personality, energ y, and sense of place – without being too literal. Sam’s work has so much personality, especially with his use of color, which made it a natural fit for what we were trying to express with this collection.” For Green, being approached to have his work appear on the collection was an easy yes. “I think it’s a no-brainer when locals want to work with locals,” he says. His artwork can be found on bottles of Blaufrånkisch, Coteaux, Early

Harvest, Estate Vidal Blanc, and Patchwork; the remaining two new labels are by Newport artist Kristin Stashenko, who works in gouache and acrylics. The new seven stand out from the existing labels, which are branded simply with text and the logo on a white background. Green didn’t create artwork specifically for Sakonnet; instead, they got to browse his library. “I often paint from life, but I focus more on color and shape, rather than the subject itself. The painting can often remain somewhat ambiguous; this allows the viewer to insert themselves into the less defined parts of the painting ,” says Green. Once Stashenko made her selections, Green sent her the high-end JPEGS for production. For Stashenko, her personal favorite label is Green’s painting of Cliff Walk, which appears on their bottle of Blaufränkisch. “One of the things I love most about living in Rhode Island is being surrounded by the water and coastline, so I was immediately drawn to that piece. Blaufränkisch is also one of the wines I find most interesting in the collection, both because of how well the grape is showing that it can grow here in New England and because of the wine itself.” She describes the medium-bodied red as earthy and rich, but still versatile and food-friendly.
“There’s something about the mood and depth of Cliff Walk that feels like a really natural match for the wine, and it also captures a sense of place that feels distinctly Rhode Island.” When Green is live-painting at the 169-acre estate, he says that morning and late evening offer the light he’s most interested in. “It’s warm and crisp; the shadows are long. And finding a space that maybe doesn’t scream vineyard, but offers some subtle clues as to where we are.” His portfolio is vast and filled with vivid gestures from places like Collioure, France, Wexford, Ireland, and close to his home in the College Hill neighborhood, where he lives with his wife and their two children. “It sounds so silly, but I often just wander until I find something that stops me. It’s not always something beautiful, but maybe it has some interesting relationships of weird shapes or color.” And where is his favorite place to paint ? “Honestly, I get this question all the time, and the best answer is any place with parking , a bathroom, and a good sandwich nearby,” he says with a chuckle. “Ultimately, it’s not what you paint, it’s how you paint.” Learn more at SakonnetWine.com and follow the artist along on Instagram at @samallertongreen. Voices of the Bay:
Bristol’s Colleen Cavanaugh Retire d phys i c i a n a n d p ro fe s s i o n a l dance r t ur ne d YA a u t h o r By Nina Murphy
F
or Colleen Cavanaugh, her world of artistic expression has taken shape through piano, dance, and writing alongside her 30-year career as an obstetrician-g ynecologist in Rhode Island. Recently retired, the Bristol resident whose medical essays have appeared in the Journal of Narrative Medicine now devotes her time to writing daily. She has recently published her first book, Grandmother’s Gift with illustrations by Carolyn Winter, also of Bristol. The young adult novel centers around a young dancer’s life in New York City. For Cavanaugh, it is a world she knows firsthand. After earning her BA in Art Histor y from Wheaton College, she pursued her dream of becoming a professional dancer in New York City. Cavanaugh eventually returned to Rhode Island to attend Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School, but she never hung up her dance shoes. While working as a medical provider specializing in women’s reproductive health, she remained active in the dance community. Her second book, Extraordinary Piano Lesson, is scheduled for release in December by Stillwater Books.

JUST WRITE: Starting five or six years ago, I took some graduate-level courses at Rhode Island College in creative writing. Initially, I wrote narrative essays about my experiences in medicine, which were published. Then I wrote about a dancer who discovers she can fly. It was a short stor y, and the pro fessor said, “ That sounds like a young adult book.” So I took off and started to write. Flying is a gift the main character inherited from her grandmother, who she never knew about, and who had just passed away. I don’t outline. I write and kind of see where it takes me. I think about [the writing ] all the time. If I have an episode to add or a character to fine-tune, then I go back and edit.
COMMUNITY: I’m in a writing group through the Rog ers Free Librar y in Bristol, which has been wonderful. I get a lot out of it each time I go. I’ve been writing about my son Peter’s progressive neurologic disease from a mother’s perspective versus as a doctor. One is called “Kitchen Tango” because, when he was young , we used to do the tango in the kitchen.
Follow your passion.
Invest with purpose. Discover what’s possible.
BOOK TWO: My second book is also a young adult novel, Extraordinary Pianist, which will be pub lished in December and centers around a young pianist. I’ve always played piano, so it’s kind of my voice exploring an art form and the struggles of loss. I lost my own dad when I was six, and he was a jazz pianist. It also has some magical themes in it. I’ve always loved reading books with magical content and escapism. And the same with that writing ; it’s kind of therapeutic.

MOVEMENT: I had choreographed quite a few pieces for what was then Festival Ballet, now Ballet RI, and Island Moving Company, now Newport Contemporar y Ballet. I started my own company, Cadence Dance Project, and performed all over Rhode Island. Two of my pieces were selected by Ballet Builders in New York. I also did pieces around breast cancer and healing. It was performed with Amazon Women Waking Warriors in Europe.
FULL CIRCLE RHODY: I signed a copy of Extraordinary Gift for a woman who was giving it to her niece on her 16th birthday. She started reading it and loving it. Two days later, when she went to the bank to open her first bank account, she had to provide her birth certificate. And I was on her birth certificate as the deliver y doctor. Sixteen years later, she’s reading my book. It’s a Rhode Island moment. Colleen Cavanaugh will be signing books on October 18 at Barrington Books, 184 County Road, Barrington. Making Magic
Local publishing talents combine forces to celebrate retiring school librarian with a special gift By Jenna Kaplan
A
t Gordon School, magic starts with a tap. A wooden book outside the librar y of the progressive nurser y through eighth grade independent day school invites students to “ Touch this page and magic will happen,” a tradition that has ushered generations of curious hands through the doors. Now, that familiar invitation has inspired a picture book honoring the librarian who made the room feel magical in the first place. Magic Will Happen, written by Mariahadessa
Ekere Tallie of Providence and illustrated by Barrington-based published children’s book illustrator Laurel Aylesworth, celebrates longtime Gordon School librarian Frances Martindale, who joined the East Providence school in 1996 and spent 30 years shaping its library, directing theater, welcoming visiting authors, and helping students find both new worlds and pieces of themselves on the shelves. Martindale knew nothing about the project until Gordon revealed it at her recent retirement celebration. “If I still lived in England, I would say that I
was gobsmacked,” she says. “I was stunned, humbled by my school’s appreciation.” The story follows Joy, a new Gordon student, and her teacher, Ms. Arias, who is based on one of Ms. Martindale’s longtime colleagues. Ms. Arias introduces Joy to Ms. Martindale and the library she leads. Rather than fit three decades of Martindale’s accomplishments into one picture book, Tallie focused on the spirit behind them. “Frances’ legacy is one of care, attention, and intention, so the book needed to be about those things,” Tallie says.

Tallie, an accomplished author whose work includes the Ezra Jack Keats Honor-winning children’s book Layla’s Happiness, saw that care firsthand during a 2021 visit to Gordon. Students approached Martindale to say they had enjoyed her latest recommendations, then immediately asked what to read next. Martindale listened closely to each child before sending them back into the stacks. “Frances created a librar y environment that was joyous,” Tallie says. “I left the librar y feeling that I had encountered a new role model.” For Martindale, a librar y has never been simply a quiet place to check out a book. Children also arrive looking for belonging , room to wonder, and adults who take their interests seriously. Some want a cozy reading nook. Others need a place where they can be “ both reflective and also sometimes loud.”
16
Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
That second option came in handy during one particularly lively storytime. When a group of four-year-olds asked how large a megalodon could grow, Martindale compared its 45-foot length to the distance between her reading chair and a nearby window. Before she could finish the sentence, the children were already on their feet, pacing and “swimming” across the library to measure the prehistoric shark for themselves. Tallie wanted the book to carr y that same energ y when read aloud. She shaped the lang uage by listening to it, a practice she learned from poet Sonia Sanchez. “ When you write for children, you know that somebody will be reading the book to them,” Tallie says. “It’s important to create a world that jumps off the page sonically and surprises the listeners.” Aylesworth’s illustrations give that world its movement and expression. Martindale
especially loves the bright, joyful cover and a later spread where Joy begins noticing what she shares with Ms. Arias. The small details capture what Martindale spent decades cultivating : children recognizing themselves, connecting with others, and discovering that the librar y has room for all of it. Her retirement celebration supplied one more scene worthy of a picture book. When Gordon unveiled an outdoor storytelling space in Martindale’s honor, she jumped from her seat and ran over to see it. The children ran right behind her. While the fanfare took place in May, the books are expected back from the publisher, and can be ordered now. Initial copies of Magic Will Happen are being sold at cost, with proceeds going to the Frances Martindale Fund and the future of the school’s library leadership. Learn more at GordonSchool.org.

What makes it a Rhody Gem? A love of Newport’s rich histor y and maritime charm (Ahoy, fisherman core!) inspires the elevated coastal aesthetic of Jill Zelensky’s shop, The Sailor’s Daughter. Walk through the solid wood doors to find a fresh space outfitted with engaging displays of ever ything from tote bags to tabletop to togs. Originally from the Granite State, Zelensky pours her love of the Ocean State into ever y detail, including walls displaying collected framed art of nautical subjects for sale – both new and antique, along with stationer y, books, and jewelr y. “ Whether you’re a Newport local or visiting for the first time, my hope is that you’ll find something that reminds you of the beauty and timeless style of coastal New England,” says Zelensky. “Our goal is to offer not just beautiful products, but a warm, inviting shopping experience that reflects the charm and hospitality of coastal Rhode Island.”

The character of a 100-year-old cottage informs a mindful glow-up By Ann Martini
O
n Sakonnet Point Road, where summer cottages seem to come with their own mytholog y, the S. Newell Smith Cottage has been part of the Little Compton landscape for more than a century. Built around 1920, the petite coastal house was one of a pair reportedly built by two local sisters. (A story that its companion was lost in a hurricane persists, though it has never been verified.) More than a century later, the cottage might easily have met a very different fate: a teardown, a much larger house, a fresh start. Instead, it got a second act.

A round pedestal table and chandelier create a dining zone in the open space
Its owners, who bought it in 2022, have spent years vacationing in Little Compton, and the house represented something they had been working toward for a long time. With a young family – three kids and a dog – and a plan to remodel, the decision to purchase this cottage was as easy as a Sakonnet Sunday morning. “The location was exactly what we always hoped for,” the owners say. From the house, Tappens Beach, the harbor, and Lloyd’s Beach are

all within walking distance. The property also takes in two distinctly Little Compton views: Round Pond stretching toward the ocean to the south, and broad lawns rolling toward the harbor to the west. The house needed some help. It was tired, and while its proportions and traditional beach-cottage character were exactly what the homeowners loved, it wasn’t equipped for family life or the inevitable parade of friends and extended family that comes with

Bounded on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the Sakonnet River, on the north by the town of Tiverton, and on the east by the town of Westport, MA, Little Compton is known for its pastoral charm. Family favorites include Wishing Stone Farm for produce and provisions, Sweet and Salty Farm for dairy, and Young Family Farm for flowers. Head over to The Commons to check out newly opened Elsie’s on The Commons, serving breakfast, lunch, and coffee; shop everything from pickles to PJs at Wilbur’s General Store, and sip coffee amidst creativity at The Art Cafe.
A two-toned wall-mount sink and wallpapered ceiling bring big style to the small powder room
a beloved summer house. They hired Milk and Honey Group for the job, in part because Isabella Califano Ehrlich, the founder and principal designer, had designed her own Little Compton home years previously and knew the terrain. Ehrlich says the renovation became an exercise in restraint and ingenuity. Every room was expected to do more, accommodating the family of five while still making

room for guests. The footprint remained essentially intact, but the house gained valuable living space through carefully designed additions. “For us, creating an Ocean State vibe is about embracing the character of the home and allowing the architecture to lead,” says Ashley Machon, the group’s marketing manager. “ What a gift it is to give a home new life while still honoring its history and original character.”
V i n eya rd V i b e s Set on 170 acres with water views, the focus at Sakonnet Vineyard is on the guest experience. Stock your wine cellar with their award-winning selections, and make sure your cupboards are lined with their classic “Rooster” stemware. Stripes bring a mix of seaside luxury and jaunty appeal

The expanded porch is perhaps the best example. Double French doors open onto generous dining and lounging areas, creating an almost seamless transition between inside and out. Upstairs, a second porch extends from the bedrooms. Both were designed to look as though they had been there from the beginning. Inside, the designers took their cues from the coast without resorting to the expected collection of anchors, shells, and navy stripes. Instead : soft, relaxed colors, while layers of pattern and texture sub tly tie the rooms together. And then there is the coral. The color makes its first and most
44

dramatic appearance at the front gate, where it pops against the home’s muted sage trim. Ehrlich says the gate was one of her favorite elements of the entire project, and the homeowners get the credit for insisting on a color with some attitude. The same coral appears throughout the house in smaller doses such as lighting , hardware, wallpaper, and accessories. The effect is playful without being kitschy, a nod to the exuberance of old-fashioned summers. For the family, though, the real design inspiration comes from the place itself. Little Compton has long been their refuge from
the pace of ever yday life. Their established summer rituals include jumping off docks in the harbor, riding waves at Tappens, and shopping farmstands for produce. “ We can feel our blood pressure drop the minute we hit West Main Road,” they say. The result is an historic cottage that has been given room to evolve while keeping its original spirit intact. Here, the architecture does the talking. The design knows when to listen. The house doesn’t tr y too hard. It doesn’t announce that it is a beach house ; it simply understands that it is one. And that coral gate ? It just happens to have the last word.

Rhody Reads Five books and a thrilling event By Deborah Goodrich Royce
I
t’s sweater weather, and with it comes a bevy of new books that will keep you glued to the pages for hours at a time. Two of these five novels are set in Rhode Island, and Lauren Willig will be part of the Ocean House Author Series Thriller Panel on Sunday, October 25, along with Wendy Walker, Laura Zigman, and Rhody’s own Diane Josefowicz. Tickets, which include brunch, are available at OceanHouseEvents.com. Listen to previous panels, including recent OHAS guests Donna Freitas and Jodi Picoult at Classical959.com.
In Jodi Picoult’s Hollow Bones (released September 15), Molly Fitzgerald runs the Rhode Island Department of Emergency Preparedness, planning for the sur vival of storms, epidemics, and other disasters. Molly lost her mother as a baby when she never returned from the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Molly’s husband is a police polygraph expert with his own histo r y of disaster. Together, they navigate past, present, and the lies we tell ourselves in this epic novel.
ABOUT DEBORAH GOODRICH ROYCE Deborah Goodrich Royce novel Best Boy is both a USA Today and an Indie Press bestseller. Reef Road, a Publishers Weekly bestseller, was named one of the best books of 2023 by Kirkus Reviews and an Indie Next pick by the ABA. Her Ocean House Author Series – in partnership with Martin House Books and WCRI – brings world-class authors like Emma Straub, Chris Bohjalian, and Katie Couric to Watch Hill. With fellow authors, Luanne Rice, and Amy Scheibe, Royce hosts the Deer Mountain Writers’ Retreat in the Catskills. She began as an actress on All My Children and in multiple films before transitioning to the role of story editor at Miramax Films, developing Emma and early versions of Chicago and A Wrinkle in Time. Royce holds a bachelor’s degree and two honorary doctorates, from both Lake Erie College and the University of Rhode Island. With her husband, Chuck, she restored the Avon Theatre, Ocean House Hotel, Deer Mountain Inn, United Theatre, Martin House Books, and numerous Main Street revitalization projects in Rhode Island and the Catskills. She serves on multiple governing and advisory boards. Royce writes the Hey Rhody Media Co. reading recommendation column quarterly.

In a massive and globe-spanning novel – her first since Pachinko – National Book Award Finalist and New York Times bestseller Min Jin Lee’s American Hagwon (released September 29), traces the life of a contemporary Korean family pursuing security and social advancement through the time-honored path of education. That path is not always a straight one, delivering less of what was once a predictable way to hard-won success and more disappointment and missteps along the way. October 6 brings Lauren Willig’s gothic twister, What Happens at Nightfall. When Jess Waters gets lost on a nighttime tour of Brooklyn’s GreenWood Cemetery, she finds a group of frightened boys, an ancient key, and the cemetery’s widowed arborist, Adam Chervinsky. Together, they face an old curse and dark forces gathered around the Vanderwilt mausoleum. Billed as “a supernatural cemetery romance of Gilded Age curses and second chances,” it takes us on a wild New York ride. Partitia by Barbara Kingsolver also arrives on October 6. Livia Cable lives a quiet and solitary life on a remote farm. She likes it that way. When she receives a sudden phone call from an old lover, she confronts her past as a promising music conservatory student, a long-ago time when she had a different name and a different life. Old memories, childhood losses, and abandoned ambitions rise to the surface, set against the backdrop of the world of music. Coming November 3 is Wolves of Summer by Donna Freitas. When a 12-year-old girl goes missing from a Rhode Island beach community, everyone is horrified and shows up to look for her. But they all are left wondering if there is a monster among them. Freitas’s second novel set in the Ocean State (Her One Regret came out last year) examines the same themes of violence against women, female friendships, familial relationships, and deep questions of responsibility.

Thousands of intricately car ved pumpkins light the way through Roger Williams Park Zoo during one of Rhode Island’s most awaited traditions. Getting completely turned around in a cornfield is practically a fall rite of passage. Escobar Farm’s corn maze is a family favorite, with a new design to navigate each year. See who in the family actually has the best sense of direction (and who is just confidently leading everyone in circles). Portsmouth
This year’s theme, “250 Years of Farming in RI,” celebrates the state’s agricultural histor y, with October weekends filled with hayrides, cider donuts, food, and live music, plus a petting zoo, giant mountain slide, pedal-powered go -karts, “farmer-style” basketball, and a corn maze! Matunuck

R
hode Island’s population is aging rapidly. By 2030, more than one in 10 Rhode Islanders is projected to be 75 or older, compared with roughly one in 11 Americans nationwide. And the state’s 75-to -84 population is growing particularly quickly, projected to increase by nearly 60 percent between 2020 and 2030. Whether the infrastructure needed to support that population will keep pace is less certain, prompting many Rhode Islanders to take healthy aging into their own hands.

Financial advisors often say that the first step toward a healthy lifestyle is having options. And careful financial planning allows for choice. “Money alone doesn’t create happiness, but being more confident in your financial situation can create options that allow you to do the things you enjoy,” says Ashley Macksoud, wealth management advisor at Merrill Rhode Island. Macksoud’s approach to financial planning is much like the old proverb about planting fruit trees: the best time to plant one was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. “It’s never too early or too late to work with an advisor,” she says. “An advisor can evaluate where you are today and make course corrections as your life circumstances change.” Whether those goals are traveling , buying a dream home, or spending time with loved ones, all of them are better enjoyed by people who feel good. That’s why many seniors are choosing to invest in their healthcare. A new model of healthcare growing in Rhode Island is direct primar y care, a membership -based model where patients pay a practice a monthly fee for primar y care ser vices, in many cases cutting insurance out of the equation. These practices tend to be small, with ample time for individualized care. “I charge a monthly fee that covers all of your primar y care ser vices, such as appointments, in-office procedures, texts, prescriptions, video calls,” says Wendy Regan, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician who runs Harbour Direct Primar y Care in Jamestown. She worked under the insurance model until 2020, when she realized its demands didn’t allow her to practice medicine the way she wanted to. “Insurance demands healthcare providers maintain a full schedule of 12-to -15-minute appointments. That doesn’t let me connect with patients in the way that best ser ves them.”

Sarah McGinley, APRN, a board-certified family nurse practitioner and founder of Weatherly Direct Primary Care in Wakefield, sees the relationship as the model’s chief advantage. “I left the insurance model because I felt it was wrong to rush a human being through a visit if they were having a hard time,” she says. “People are not robots.” Regan and McGinley say that direct primary care is designed to work with insurance, however, not replace it. Insurance remains necessary for specialist appointments, labs, and ER visits. Regan says that her primar y goal is to help her patients feel like they’re in control of their health. “ When you hire me to be your physician, I need to know what’s important to you,” she says. “Is it independence ? Function? Cognitive status ? Quality of life ? Once we know your goals, I can help you meet them and feel like you have agency over your life.” Although both practitioners work with peo ple with a variety of lifestyles, they tend to attract a certain type of patient. “My practice draws the type of person who’s an active participant in their health,” says McGinley. “ They’re proactive and want to make changes that positively impact their health.” That’s where a place like Roots Physical Therapy and Yoga, in Providence, comes in. Twice a week, they hold a class called Yoga for Healthy Aging , which uses movement to safely build strength, maximize mobility, and improve balance. Jaclyn Plante, PT, DPT, OCS, RYT, a doctor of physical therapy and the yoga and

movement studio manager at the facility, teaches one of the classes and blends her yoga experience with her medical knowledge in her approach. The average age of the Yoga for Healthy Aging class is 55-plus, but the class and studio are open to and inclusive of queer, aging , abled, or disabled folks. “Our studio motto is we’re psyched you’re here,” Plante says. “I apply the tenets of yoga through the lens of physical therapy,” she says. “For example, when we’re doing chair pose, I encourage them to think about squatting into a chair or reaching into the dr yer. Those visuals really resonate with the older population.” She’s also aware that transitions from standing to sitting are when a lot of falls happen. Falls aren’t necessarily the greatest threat to an older adult’s life, but they may be one of the biggest preventable threats to an older adult’s independence. “During class, we work our way from a seated position to a single-leg balance and then work back down to the mat, but we do it in a flow sequence that you’d expect in a yoga practice.” Almost as important as the physical aspects of a class like this are the social aspects. “ We always encourage people to come to class a few
minutes early, but I find people come even earlier than recommended to catch up and make plans with each other,” Plante says. “And our classes are intentionally kept small, so students get that one-on-one attention in a community. But the result is that when someone is missing , others notice and check on them.” Despite the best medical care and prevention techniques, however, the way people age and the physical and cognitive issues they face are sometimes out of their control. And long-term care is expensive. To address care costs and empower people to embrace long-term planning , a membership program was recently launched through Warwick-based St. Elizabeth Community called atHome Together, to help people age at home for as long as possible. Jessica Smith, director of atHome Together, says the program is ideal for people who have assets to protect and want to have a plan in place. Smith explains how the program works. “You pay a large one-time fee when you’re healthy – the sweet spot is when people are in their 60s to 70s – and then you pay a monthly fee. That monthly fee gets you a care coordinator whose job is to understand your family and your wishes. They walk along with you as you age.”

But that fee also unlocks priority access to care. “Let’s say you’re aging at home and your care coordinator thinks you’d benefit from help bathing. We’d coordinate and pay for that care,” Smith explains. As members decide with their care coordinator that they need to transition into assisted living or a long-term care facility, atHome Together also would arrange and pay
for that care. “It’s a way to access care with today’s dollars,” Smith explains. She says the program is ideal for solo agers or for aging couples who don’t want to become a burden on their adult children. “ We tend to only think of senior living facilities in a crisis, so this is a whole different mindset for seniors,” Plante says. “I think this is an amazing program and

ewport has a new gallery, though the works arrive on ice, fresh from the oven, or poured into a coupe. Inside the newly renovated Hotel Viking , Rhode Island chef and restaurateur Robert Andreozzi has approached the dining program like a curator, giving each space its own point of view while keeping the collection tied to the century-old hotel. The Bellevue Avenue landmark reopened in May following a major centennial renovation, with Andreozzi and Jesse Hedberg’s Providence-based Littleneck Hospitality Group overseeing its new food-and-beverage program. The team behind Pizza Mar vin and Club Frills created four concepts for the hotel’s next chapter, from lobby coffee at Tuck Shop and cocktails in the Skoal Room to rooftop drinks at Cap Club.

Pescadou sits at the center of it all. Blushpink banquettes and mint-green chairs give the dining room a Riviera glow without tipping into theme-restaurant territory. The menu draws from Marseille and Nice, picking up flavors from North Africa, Corsica, and Italy before landing back in Rhode Island waters. It feels rooted in Newport, with a little French Riviera polish. On a recent Hey Rhody Media Co. visit, Editor-in-Chief Elyse Major and I started with Champagne, which felt appropriately Newport without requiring a yacht. She followed with the Tepache Tonic, a bright, spiced mix of pink
pineapple, citrus, and elderflower tonic. I chose the Kir, blending aligoté, crème de cassis, and blackberry into something tart, lightly sweet, and dangerously easy to continue sipping. Baby lettuces opened the meal with more personality than the name suggests. Crisp greens, shaved radish, fennel, fine herbes, and lemon vinaigrette made the plate cool, clean, and sharp enough to wake up the palate. Niçoise olives and warm fougasse followed, the latter landing somewhere between focaccia and a soft flatbread, ready for a generous sweep through olive oil.

Then the raw bar began arriving. The oysters came topped with rosé granita and pink peppercorn, a cold, briny bite followed by a flicker of fruit and spice. Even more memorable were the scallops, whose delicate sweetness played against creamy almond milk, fragrant Meyer

lemon, and a gentle hum of espelette. Razor clams with ras el hanout, nectarine, and Niçoise olive oil brought the boldest turn, balancing warm spice with ripe fruit and ocean salinity. Little necks with green strawberr y and fennel, and black bass with melon and finger
lime rounded out the tasting , creating a pro gression that moved from bright and briny to floral, fruity, and gently spiced. Ordering one of ever ything sounded ambitious when we said it. Once the plates started disappearing , it felt entirely reasonable.

For dinner, Elyse chose the conchigliette, with sweet lobster tucked into shell-shaped pasta alongside bursts of corn and the fresh, anise-like lift of tarragon. I went with the chicken tagine, where tender meat and earthy Tunisian chickpeas soaked up warm harissa and the sharp brightness of preserved lemon. The rice caught the deeply seasoned sauce underneath, so leaving any behind would’ve shown poor judgment.

Dessert softened the landing. Pescadou’s Tarte Tropézienne ate more like a tender oil cake than traditional brioche, with a moist, fragrant crumb paired with cream, ripe strawberries, and a delicate note of beach rose. It looked shareable. Technically, it was. Pescadou gives visitors a polished taste of Newport while offering locals a reason to walk into Hotel Viking without an overnight bag.
The room may nod to the Riviera, but the seafood, hospitality, and easy sense of occasion keep the experience close to home.

hen it comes to Rhode Island restaurants, Jamestown’s Beech is about as legendary as it gets in the Ocean State. Sultry seascapes and the harbor are never far from view, and you can always smell the water. Set in the shadow of a 131-year-old American copper beech tree, the dappled light provides the tone for a sublime dining experience. The rest falls to the kitchen – and these days, that kitchen has a familiar name at the helm. James Beard Award-winning Michael Schlow is a celebrated American chef, with a list of accolades and T V appearances as long as his apron. Schlow, known for restaurants in
Boston and Washington, DC, as well as at Foxwoods, has joined Beech as chef and managing partner, bringing a distinctly personal philosophy to the Conanicut Island dining scene. Schlow is helping shape the next chapter of a restaurant that has been part of the community for decades (it was formerly Simpatico and Trattoria Simpatico). For Schlow, the decision to come to Jamestown was less about expanding his restaurant empire and more about following a place and people he already loved. “I’ve been coming to Jamestown and Newport for many, many years and have lots of wonderful friends and colleagues here,” he says. “It’s a beautiful part
of the country.” When Tim Conway, one of Beech’s owners, approached him about joining the team, Schlow says, “I jumped at the chance.” Schlow still calls Boston home, but has been spending considerably more time in Jamestown. And while the restaurant business may have taken him to many destinations, the chef says there is something about this corner of Rhode Island that feels particularly right. The Beech menu under Schlow centers on American cooking with Mediterranean influences, with an emphasis on local ingredients whenever possible. The result is the kind of food that reflects Schlow’s larger culinary philosophy: sophisticated technique without unnecessary fuss.

Five-hour simmered sauce and house-made tagliatelle pasta are served on “Bolognese Sundays”
“While I love being ‘creative,’ many times I find that great food doesn’t necessarily need my redesign,” he says. “An amazing dish is often about honoring the original concept and attempting to make it the very best version you are capable of.” That approach is evident in dishes such as tuna tartare with cucumbers, caviar, and spicy ponzu; mussels “Meuniere”; chicken Milanese; steak frites with bistro sauce; and homemade chitarra with spicy lobster, and shrimp diavola. There is a certain breadth to the menu, but also a sense of restraint. Schlow is interested in making food memorable, not making it complicated for the sake of being clever. That instinct was developed over a career that began remarkably early. Schlow got his first restaurant job as a dishwasher at age 14 and worked his way through virtually every position in the business, a very typical track for people in his position. Along the way, he was mentored by Jean-Louis Palladin, Pino Luongo, and Craig

Shelton, three chefs he credits with helping shape both his cooking style and work ethic. But ask Schlow what a chef actually does, and the answer goes well beyond cooking. “Cooking is maybe 30 percent of the job,” he says. The rest, he explains, requires being “an accountant, an artist, a historian, a handyman, a coach, a psychologist, a designer, a buyer, a negotiator, a babysitter, a performer, and most importantly, a teacher.” At Beech, that last role is particularly important. Schlow has reunited with Jamestown native Eric Warren, who was part of Beech’s original kitchen team and now ser ves as executive chef. Together, they are focused not only on the food but on creating a workplace where people can learn and grow. Schlow’s approach to leadership has evolved along with the industry. The old-school kitchen stereotype – loud, intimidating , and occasionally airborne with a whole fish – is not his model. His recipe for a successful restaurant begins
with clear communication, defined goals, a happy workplace, and a team of like-minded people. It is an approach that mirrors his philosophy of hospitality: Make people feel good, whether they are working in the restaurant or sitting down to dinner. That, ultimately, is what Schlow hopes Beech becomes – a place people return to not because it is the newest destination in town, but because it is the one they can count on. The restaurant has recently undergone renovations, including improvements to its second-floor Tree House space, and Schlow says more is coming : new wine and cocktail programs, themed dinners and programmed evenings designed to give guests additional reasons to gather. “Our goal is to make Beech the very best restaurant we’re capable of,” Schlow says. “Most importantly, is continuing to work side by side with all of our team members and partners to make Beech everyone’s ‘go to’ spot no matter what the occasion.” 13 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown

Seafood is a big part of Ocean State culture. Rhode Island’s commercial fishing industr y has a histor y that goes back more than 350 years, with Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound, and Block Island Sound supporting local communities since the 1630’s. Today, Rhode Island has 25 active fishing ports, 1074 active commercial fishing licenses, 518 commercial quahoggers, and more than 80 aquaculture farms. In 2025, RI fishermen landed 70.7 million pounds of seafood, worth $87.1 million at the dock, representing more than 100 species. With more than 170 Rhode Island Seafood partner restaurants, markets, and other venues, our local seafood community is keeping our state’s proud fishing legacy alive, one satisf ying bite at a time.
