First Track Primary Care: A Personal Approach to Primary Care We spoke to First Track owner Kyle Wardle, APRN, about bringing a more personal, proactive approach to healthcare in South County.

is spent focused intently on you and your wellness needs, and then you may help yourself to a Jolly Rancher at the end.

Q:

Q: A:

How does the direct primary care model make accessing healthcare easier?

Q: A:

What does the membership model include?

Q:

Is First Track focused primarily on treating illness, or does it take a more preventive approach?

What makes First Track Primary Care different from a traditional primary care practice?

A:

At First Track Primary Care my goal is to deliver care to my patients in a stress free and highly individualized way. Operating a Direct Primary Care model outside of the confines of insurance allows me to spend as much time as is needed with every patient. So, not only do we get the time to really attack chronic issues with a comprehensive plan, but we are able to work together on a plan for future screening and surveillance. Wardle, APRN, says the practice takes a proactive, longevity-focused approach to medicine rather than simply reacting to symptoms as they arise. Inspired by his love of the outdoors, Wardle applies a “first track” mentality to healthcare -staying ahead of obstacles and helping patients build a healthier future.

Q: A:

Why is the Direct Primary Care model growing so rapidly across the country?

Q: A:

What can patients expect from an appointment at First Track?

The movement from Fee For Service models to Concierge and Direct Primary Care (DPC) Membership models is in response to everyone’s frustration with the existing product. Patients pay a lot of money for their insurance, and they are not happy with the amount of care they are able to access. Providers work extremely hard and care a lot and they are not happy with the amount of time they are afforded with patients on top of the systemic hassles.

First you will never be scolded for being late, or rushed. That is not the vibe at First Track. Half of the appointment is always a relaxed conversation format we can even sit and have a coffee or tea. Followed.by the second half being the physical exam. At annual physicals we will do inoffice blood work and an EKG. Every appointment

First Track Primary Care removes many of the barriers patients have come to associate with traditional healthcare. Members have direct access to Wardle by text, phone, or email, so they don't have to navigate call centers, phone trees, or lengthy waits to speak with a provider. Because Wardle knows his patients and their medical histories, communication is personal and straightforward.

The membership includes 24/7 access to Wardle via phone, text, email, and telehealth. Unlimited office visits for as long as you need. At First Track you can even come in on the weekend or evening if needed.

A:

Prevention and long-term wellness are central to primary care. Rather than simply treating symptoms with a quick prescription, I prefer to provide comprehensive plans for treatment. I am a big proponent of patient education and lifestyle modifications as a first line treatment, but at First Track we incorporate all modalities into care planning. Wardle’s experience in orthopedics, weight management, and health counseling allows him to take a broad view of a patient's health and help them remain active and well.

large healthcare system; they're members of a community and partners in their own care.

Q:

Does First Track offer the same kind of access associated with concierge medicine?

A:

First Track provides many of the hightouch elements patients seek from concierge medicine— extended appointments, weekend/evening appointments, direct provider communication, and highly personalized care— while using a more accessible membership model. The goal is to make this level of attention available without the thousands of dollars per year that can be associated with traditional luxury concierge practices.

Q: A:

Can patients use an HSA or FSA to pay for their membership?

Q: A:

What is happening at First Track Primary Care now?

First Track notes that DPC membership fees are recognized by the IRS as reimbursable medical expenses under FSA and HSA plans, allowing eligible patients to use pre-tax healthcare dollars toward their membership. Patients should confirm eligibility and applicable rules with their plan administrator or tax professional.

First Track Primary Care recently celebrated its grand opening and is now enrolling a limited number of new members. We are getting such great response and building an incredible community.

What does being a local practice mean to First Track?

Community is an important part of the practice. Wardle is a South County native who is raising his family in the same community he serves. That local connection helps create a healthcare experience that feels personal and accessible. Patients aren't simply numbers in a

NFL Hall of Famer headlines a day of outdoor recreation and charitable giving in Richmond

By Ken Abrams

“

P

ull!” The unmistakable sound of sporting clays being fired and exploding recently echoed across the wooded grounds of The Preser ve Sporting Club and Resort as hundreds of guests gathered at the Richmond property for a day devoted to outdoor recreation, camaraderie, and giving back. The fourth annual Clays 4 Charity, held August 14, was a special “Hall of Fame Edition” honoring former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year. The four-time Super Bowl champion was joined by former Patriots offensive lineman Joe Andruzzi, another familiar face from the franchise’s championship years.

Hosted by Preserve chairman Paul Mihailides, the event welcomed athletes, celebrities, business leaders, families, sponsors, and sporting enthusiasts of all experience levels. Proceeds supported organizations serving veterans, first responders, and members of the nation’s service community. “This event continues to grow because of the incredible people who come together for a common purpose,” said Mihailides. “To have more than 500 people join us this year – and to celebrate Adam’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame – made this Clays 4 Charity especially meaningful.” This year’s principal beneficiary was the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a non-profit

that provides mortgage-free homes and other assistance to injured veterans, first responders, and Gold Star families. Additional support was directed to the Geronimo Foundation and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting outdoor sporting traditions. Vinatieri and Mihailides welcomed the crowd during the morning kickoff before participants headed to The Preser ve’s two sporting clays courses. The competition offered newcomers and veteran shooters alike an opportunity to test their skills at stations spread throughout the property. While sporting clays served as the centerpiece, the sprawling 3,500-acre resort provided plenty

of additional adventures. Guests could try fly fishing, paintball, axe throwing, chainsaw carving, lawn games, an obstacle course, and The Preserve’s indoor luxury shooting range. Vendor experiences and demonstrations continued throughout. “At the end of the day, it is about much more than sporting clays,” Mihailides explained. “It is about supporting the people and organizations that serve our country and our communities.” The festivities moved indoors in the evening for a dinner prepared by acclaimed chef David Burke, followed by a live auction and a full lineup of music. Nashville-based Americana singer-songwriter Dave Kennedy performed alongside guitarist and mandolinist Andy Wood

Its combination of outdoor activities, celebrity guests, live entertainment, and philanthropy has helped attract a growing audience while raising awareness for organizations that assist those who serve. each week; it’s likely in the thousands. “The URI Biocontrol Lab has been working on a biocontrol wasp actually from spotted lanternfly’s native range in China, Dryinus sinicus,” Tennison says. “It feeds on those first couple of life stages of spotted lanternfly. And hopefully they can release that soon, and maybe there’ll be some sort of predator that can start really preying on them.” The DEM is also asking the public to help track infestations by filing a report on its website. And environmental regulators across the

country are asking people to help stop their spread. “It’s super imperative that if you know you have spotted lanternfly around where you park your car or just around your house in general,” Tennison says, “try to check your vehicle before leaving just so we’re not taking those little guys off to New Hampshire for the weekend where we don’t have spotted lanternfly.” This article was originally posted on August 20, 2026. eaving the office in South Providence on a recent evening , I no ticed a small red bug on the hood of my Kia. “ That’s a pretty little critter,” I thought. But later, I learned that the cute bugs are actually an enemy. I had found a small spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect originally from China, whose spread the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is battling to contain. The bugs were first found in the US in Pennsylvania in 2014. By 2021, they had been found in War wick, according to the DEM. Now, they are established in all five counties of Rhode Island and at least 17 states. The flies don’t pose a risk to people or pets. But the population is increasing – the DEM received more than a thousand reports of the bugs in July and more than 1,500 so far in Aug ust, a spokesperson said. Typically, the bugs reach the adult stage in mid-to -late Aug ust, making them easier to spot. “ They are a plant hopper,” says Noah Tennison, the spotted lanternfly response coordinator for RIDEM. “And one of their favorite things to feed on is grapevines and stone fruits. So they’re a huge risk to our agricultural economy here.” Tennison met me at the Ocean State Media studios to check out the lanternflies I found there. As I walked him over to the part of our parking lot that sits under a row of trees, I found a lanternfly on top of a car. But he was looking at the tree next to us. The tree is what’s called a Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), sometimes known as a stinking sumac, which Tennison says the bugs prefer. On branch after branch, we found dozens of flies clumped together. DEM recommends people remove these trees, since lanternflies often infest them. The flies have no natural predator in the US, so the DEM has asked the public to squash the bugs when they see them. Tennison says he can’t count the number of bugs he stomps out

A spotted lanternfly rests on a leaf in South Providence. The invasive species is now found in all five Rhode Island counties

very October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month shines a spotlight on a disease that affects millions of women and families worldwide. In the United States, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, making it the most common cancer among women after skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 300,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2026. While these numbers are sobering , there is hope: early detection through regular screening can dramatically improve sur vival rates.

The Power of Screening Breast Health Clinical Navigator Lania Rodgers, RN, puts it simply : “A mammogram takes just minutes, but it can give you years. Early detection is the most powerful tool we have to save lives.” Screening is the most effective tool to detect breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. Mammograms remain the gold standard, capable of identif ying tumors too small to be felt. For women at average risk, annual or biennial mammograms are typically recommended starting at age 40, though those with higher risk factors – such as family history or genetic mutations – may need to start earlier. Early detection matters: when breast cancer is found at a localized stage, the five-year sur vival rate is about 99 percent. That’s why regular screenings, combined with self-awareness of changes in breast tissue, are essential steps in protecting your health.

Life After a Diagnosis For the one in eight women who receive a

breast cancer diagnosis, the journey can be overwhelming. Treatment plans vary depending on the stage and type of cancer, but may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or targeted treatments. Beyond the physical challenges, there are emotional, financial, and lifestyle impacts that can be profound. “ When a patient hears the words ‘you have breast cancer,’ their world changes instantly,” says Rodgers. “My role is to walk beside them, answer their questions, and make sure they never feel alone in the process.” Many women face a whirlwind of appointments, medical jargon, and decisions that must be made quickly. Support systems – both personal

and professional – play a critical role in helping patients navigate this complex path.

The Role of the Breast Health Clinical Navigator One of the most valuable resources for patients is a Breast Health Clinical Navigator. This specialized nurse ser ves as a guide, advocate, and source of comfort from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. “Every patient’s journey is unique, but no one should have to navigate it without guidance and support. We’re here to connect the dots and bring compassion to every step of care,” says Rodgers. By providing personalized, compassionate care, nurse

here’s a buzz in the air as customers gather around the Wicked Little Books and Coffee – and it’s not just from the frothy iced lattes being served as fast as they could be made. Members of the Rhode Island Book and Sip Club are holding their monthly Social Hour at Warwick’s Goddard Park and invited Wicked Little to join them to offer beverages and a selection of books

and gifts for the people who love them. The brainchild of Mar y and Nick Karalis, Lincoln-based Wicked Little is a bookstore cafe on wheels. Inspired by the joy kids get from ice cream trucks, the couple wanted to create a similar experience for adults with coffee and books. “Nick and I just love visiting local bookshops and cafes,” says Mar y. “ They have the best of both worlds. We

thought it would be so cool if we brought this to a truck. And we could bring that local bookshop feeling directly to people. That’s how it got started.” Crafted drinks include lattes, Americanos, and cold brew with extras like sweet syrups, cold foam, espresso shots, and almond or oat milk. For younger patrons, there are caffeine-free fruity refreshers made with sparkling water.

THE SCOOP

Wicked Little launched this summer, but the process started more than a couple of years ago. Nick and Mary first purchased their van in 2024, but the kickoff was delayed so they could attend to other responsibilities like raising two children and maintaining their full-time day jobs – Nick is an accountant, and Mary works for a local nonprofit. “We had a couple of other things going on,” she says jokingly as she looks over at her kids stocking books, front-facing, within the shelves and cubbies lining the van interior, all revealed when the door rolls open. Pegboards make effective use of space to display merch for sale, like tote bags and stickers bearing their logo.

20

Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.

Now, with several events under their belts, they’ve been able to work out some of the bugs and are percolating like a well-run coffee maker, along with smiles, book recommendations, and a flavor for high-quality customer ser vice. The feedback from coffee and book lovers has been nothing but positive : “ The response has been great. Ever ybody loves the aesthetic – they’ve been so wonderful.” People especially love the name Wicked Little, which is, well, wicked Rhode Island. “I’m born and bred in Rhode Island,” says Mary. “Obviously that’s why we used the adjective ‘wicked’ and then the word ‘little’ because we’re

in a small state.” She adds that the van may seem tiny, but it’s big enough for Nick to stand in while he’s mixing his caffeinated concoctions, made with locally roasted New Harvest coffee. The book choices are brewed to order as well, depending on the audience. There are always children’s books, but the stock may be mixed up based on the venue. The Book and Sip Club loves to read Romantasy novels, for example, so that particular genre is prominently featured on this sunny day in Warwick. To find where they’ll be parked next, along with new book arrivals, seasonal menu drops, author events, and more, follow along on Instagram at WickedLittleBooksCoffee.

FLUID FILM SEASON IS HERE!

Would You Like To Keep Your Vehicle Protected From Those Salty New England Roads? WHAT IS FLUID FILM?

FLUID FILM is a lanolin based product. It will not evaporate or dry from the surface. FLUID FILM will leave a wet, non-drying film, that will provide long term corrosion protection on all metals and superior lubrication for all moving parts. We apply this to the under carriage, frame rails suspension components and rocker panels / wheels wells when accessible.

CAN MY CAR BENEFIT FROM FLUID FILM?

Fluid Film is formulated to prevent rust from commencing and to immediately stop existing rust from spreading. It is not designed to remove rust, but it will penetrate rust and rust scale to the base metal, loosening and easing in the removal process

O

n Sakonnet Point Road, where summer cottages seem to come with their own mytholog y, the S. Newell Smith Cottage has been part of the Little Compton landscape for more than a century. Built around 1920, the petite coastal house was one of a pair reportedly built by two local sisters. (A story that its companion was lost in a hurricane persists, though it has never been verified.) More than a century later, the cottage might easily have met a very different fate: a teardown, a much larger house, a fresh start. Instead, it got a second act.

A round pedestal table and chandelier create a dining zone in the open space

Its owners, who bought it in 2022, have spent years vacationing in Little Compton, and the house represented something they had been working toward for a long time. With a young family – three kids and a dog – and a plan to remodel, the decision to purchase this cottage was as easy as a Sakonnet Sunday morning. “The location was exactly what we always hoped for,” the owners say. From the house, Tappens Beach, the harbor, and Lloyd’s Beach are

all within walking distance. The property also takes in two distinctly Little Compton views: Round Pond stretching toward the ocean to the south, and broad lawns rolling toward the harbor to the west. The house needed some help. It was tired, and while its proportions and traditional beach-cottage character were exactly what the homeowners loved, it wasn’t equipped for family life or the inevitable parade of friends and extended family that comes with

Bounded on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the Sakonnet River, on the north by the town of Tiverton, and on the east by the town of Westport, MA, Little Compton is known for its pastoral charm. Family favorites include Wishing Stone Farm for produce and provisions, Sweet and Salty Farm for dairy, and Young Family Farm for flowers. Head over to The Commons to check out newly opened Elsie’s on The Commons, serving breakfast, lunch, and coffee; shop everything from pickles to PJs at Wilbur’s General Store, and sip coffee amidst creativity at The Art Cafe.

A two-toned wall-mount sink and wallpapered ceiling bring big style to the small powder room

a beloved summer house. They hired Milk and Honey Group for the job, in part because Isabella Califano Ehrlich, the founder and principal designer, had designed her own Little Compton home years previously and knew the terrain. Ehrlich says the renovation became an exercise in restraint and ingenuity. Every room was expected to do more, accommodating the family of five while still making

OCTOBER 2026 | HeyRhody.com

room for guests. The footprint remained essentially intact, but the house gained valuable living space through carefully designed additions. “For us, creating an Ocean State vibe is about embracing the character of the home and allowing the architecture to lead,” says Ashley Machon, the group’s marketing manager. “ What a gift it is to give a home new life while still honoring its history and original character.”

V i n eya rd V i b e s Set on 170 acres with water views, the focus at Sakonnet Vineyard is on the guest experience. Stock your wine cellar with their award-winning selections, and make sure your cupboards are lined with their classic “Rooster” stemware. It’s a frequent stop for our homeowners, who find it a relaxing reset. Weekends are filled with events like live music, and this month’s Rhode Race Wine Run on October 17. The porthole window in the kids’ bathroom

The expanded porch is perhaps the best example. Double French doors open onto generous dining and lounging areas, creating an almost seamless transition between inside and out. Upstairs, a second porch extends from the bedrooms. Both were designed to look as though they had been there from the beginning. Inside, the designers took their cues from the coast without resorting to the expected collection of anchors, shells, and navy stripes. Instead: soft, relaxed colors, while layers of pattern and texture subtly tie the rooms together. And then there is the coral. The color makes its first and most dramatic appearance at the front gate, where it pops against the home’s muted sage trim. Ehrlich says the gate was one of her favorite elements of the entire project, and the homeowners get the credit for insisting on a color with some attitude. The same coral appears throughout the house in

smaller doses such as lighting, hardware, wallpaper, and accessories. The effect is playful without being kitschy, a nod to the exuberance of old-fashioned summers. For the family, though, the real design inspiration comes from the place itself. Little Compton has long been their refuge from the pace of everyday life. Their established summer rituals include jumping off docks in the harbor, riding waves at Tappens, and shopping farmstands for produce. “We can feel our blood pressure drop the minute we hit West Main Road,” they say. The result is an historic cottage that has been given room to evolve while keeping its original spirit intact. Here, the architecture does the talking. The design knows when to listen. The house doesn’t try too hard. It doesn’t announce that it is a beach house; it simply understands that it is one. And that coral gate? It just happens to have the last word.

t’s sweater weather, and with it comes a bevy of new books that will keep you glued to the pages for hours at a time. Two of these five novels are set in Rhode Island, and Lauren Willig will be part of the Ocean House Author Series Thriller Panel on Sunday, October 25, along with Wendy Walker, Laura Zigman, and Rhody’s own Diane Josefowicz. Tickets, which include brunch, are available at OceanHouseEvents.com. Listen to previous panels, including recent OHAS guests Donna Freitas and Jodi Picoult at Classical959.com.

In Jodi Picoult’s Hollow Bones (released September 15), Molly Fitzgerald runs the Rhode Island Department of Emergency Preparedness, planning for the sur vival of storms, epidemics, and other disasters. Molly lost her mother as a baby when she never returned from the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Molly’s husband is a police polygraph expert with his own histo r y of disaster. Together, they navigate past, present, and the lies we tell ourselves in this epic novel.

ABOUT DEBORAH GOODRICH ROYCE Deborah Goodrich Royce novel Best Boy is both a USA Today and an Indie Press bestseller. Reef Road, a Publishers Weekly bestseller, was named one of the best books of 2023 by Kirkus Reviews and an Indie Next pick by the ABA. With fellow authors, Luanne Rice, and Amy Scheibe, Royce hosts the Deer Mountain Writers’ Retreat in the Catskills. She began as an actress on All My Children and in multiple films before transitioning to the role of story editor at Miramax Films, developing Emma and early versions of Chicago and A Wrinkle in Time. In a massive and globe-spanning novel – her first since Pachinko – National Book Award Finalist and New York Times bestseller Min Jin Lee’s American Hagwon (released September 29), traces the life of a contemporary Korean family pursuing security and social advancement through the time-honored path of education. That path is not always a straight one, delivering less of what was once a predictable way to hard-won success and more disappointment and missteps along the way. October 6 brings Lauren Willig’s gothic twister, What Happens at Nightfall. When Jess Waters gets lost on a nighttime tour of Brooklyn’s GreenWood Cemetery, she finds a group of frightened boys, an ancient key, and the cemetery’s widowed arborist, Adam Chervinsky. Together, they face an old curse and dark forces gathered around the Vanderwilt mausoleum. Billed as “a supernatural cemetery romance of Gilded Age curses and second chances,” it takes us on a wild New York ride. Partitia by Barbara Kingsolver also arrives on October 6. Livia Cable lives a quiet and solitary life on a remote farm. She likes it that way. When she receives a sudden phone call from an old lover, she confronts her past as a promising music conservatory student, a long-ago time when she had a different name and a different life. Old memories, childhood losses, and abandoned ambitions rise to the surface, set against the backdrop of the world of music. Coming November 3 is Wolves of Summer by Donna Freitas. When a 12-year-old girl goes missing from a Rhode Island beach community, everyone is horrified and shows up to look for her. But they all are left wondering if there is a monster among them. Freitas’s second novel set in the Ocean State (Her One Regret came out last year) examines the same themes of violence against women, female friendships, familial relationships, and deep questions of responsibility.

Fall for Family Fun Get those costumes ready for parades, pictures, and more

O

ctober is peak fall in Rhode Island: the sweaters come out, red, gold, and orange fill the landscape, and our favorite “cozy season” traditions return. From pumpkin patches and apple picking to Halloween fun, here are 10 of our favorite ways for families to make the most of this month around the state.

Apple cider, cider donuts, caramel apples, pumpkins, pick-your-own apples and a farmstand filled with baked goods: Jaswell’s checks a lot of fall boxes in one stop. The fourth-generation family farm is part of what gives Smithfield its historic nickname, Apple Valley. Smithfield

Thousands of intricately car ved pumpkins light the way through Roger Williams Park Zoo during one of Rhode Island’s most awaited traditions. This year’s theme, The Great Pun-Kin Trail, brings the dad jokes with clever car vings, pop culture references, and plenty of groan-worthy puns along the way. Providence

Getting completely turned around in a cornfield is practically a fall rite of passage. Escobar Farm’s corn maze is a family favorite, with a new design to navigate each year. See who in the family actually has the best sense of direction (and who is just confidently leading everyone in circles). Portsmouth

This year’s theme, “250 Years of Farming in RI,” celebrates the state’s agricultural histor y, with October weekends filled with hayrides, cider donuts, food, and live music, plus a petting zoo, giant mountain slide, pedal-powered go -karts, “farmer-style” basketball, and a corn maze! Matunuck

Local businesses working to support healthy aging

By Emily Olson

R

hode Island’s population is aging rapidly. By 2030, more than one in 10 Rhode Islanders is projected to be 75 or older, compared with roughly one in 11 Americans nationwide. And the state’s 75-to -84 population is growing particularly quickly, projected to increase by nearly 60 percent between 2020 and 2030. Whether the infrastructure needed to support that population will keep pace is less certain, prompting many Rhode Islanders to take healthy aging into their own hands.

Financial advisors often say that the first step toward a healthy lifestyle is having options. And careful financial planning allows for choice. “Money alone doesn’t create happiness, but being more confident in your financial situation can create options that allow you to do the things you enjoy,” says Ashley Macksoud, wealth management advisor at Merrill Rhode Island. Macksoud’s approach to financial planning is much like the old proverb about planting fruit trees: the best time to plant one was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. “It’s never too early or too late to work with an advisor,” she says. “An advisor can evaluate where you are today and make course corrections as your life circumstances change.” Whether those goals are traveling , buying a dream home, or spending time with loved ones, all of them are better enjoyed by people who feel good. That’s why many seniors are choosing to invest in their healthcare. A new model of healthcare growing in Rhode Island is direct primar y care, a membership -based model where patients pay a practice a monthly fee for primar y care ser vices, in many cases cutting insurance out of the equation. These practices tend to be small, with ample time for individualized care. “I charge a monthly fee that covers all of your primar y care ser vices, such as appointments, in-office procedures, texts, prescriptions, video calls,” says Wendy Regan, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician who runs Harbour Direct Primar y Care in Jamestown. She worked under the insurance model until 2020, when she realized its demands didn’t allow her to practice medicine the way she wanted to. “Insurance demands healthcare providers maintain a full schedule of 12-to -15-minute appointments. That doesn’t let me connect with patients in the way that best ser ves them.”

Sarah McGinley, APRN, a board-certified family nurse practitioner and founder of Weatherly Direct Primar y Care in Wakefield, sees the relationship as the model’s chief advantage. “I left the insurance model because I felt it was wrong to rush a human being through a visit if they were having a hard time,” she says. “People are not ro bots.” Regan and McGinley say that direct primar y care is designed to work with insurance, however, not replace it. Insurance remains necessar y for specialist appointments, labs, and ER visits. Regan says that her primar y goal is to help her patients feel like they’re in control of their health. “ When you hire me to be your physician, I need to know what’s important to you,” she says. “Is it independence ? Function? Cognitive status ? Quality of life ? Once we know your goals, I can help you meet them and feel like you have agency over your life.” Although both practitioners work with people with a variety of lifestyles, they tend to attract a certain type of patient. “My practice draws the type of person who’s an active participant in their health,” says McGinley. “ They’re proactive and want to make changes that positively impact their health.”

Activites like yoga contribute to improvements in overall well-being

“I apply the tenets of yoga through the lens of physical therapy,” she says. “For example, when we’re doing chair pose, I encourage them to think about squatting into a chair or reaching into the dryer. Those visuals really resonate

with the older population.” She’s also aware that transitions from standing to sitting are when a lot of falls happen. Falls aren’t necessarily the greatest threat to an older adult’s life, but they may be one of the biggest preventable threats

to an older adult’s independence. “During class, we work our way from a seated position to a single-leg balance and then work back down to the mat, but we do it in a flow sequence that you’d expect in a yoga practice.”

Almost as important as the physical aspects of a class like this are the social aspects. “ We always encourage people to come to class a few minutes early, but I find people come even earlier than recommended to catch up and make plans with each other,” Plante says. “And our classes are intentionally kept small, so students get that one-on-one attention in a community.

68

Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.

But the result is that when someone is missing , others notice and check on them.” Despite the best medical care and prevention techniques, however, the way people age and the physical and cognitive issues they face are sometimes out of their control. And long-term care is expensive. To address care costs and empower people to embrace

long-term planning , a membership program was recently launched through War wick-based St. Elizabeth Community called atHome To gether, to help people age at home for as long as possible. Jessica Smith, director of atHome Together, says the program is ideal for people who have assets to protect and want to have a plan in place.

Smith explains how the program works. “You pay a large one-time fee when you’re healthy – the sweet spot is when people are in their 60s to 70s – and then you pay a monthly fee. That monthly fee gets you a care coordinator whose job is to understand your family and your wishes. They walk along with you as you age.” But that fee also unlocks priority access to

70

Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.

care. “Let’s say you’re aging at home and your care coordinator thinks you’d benefit from help bathing. We’d coordinate and pay for that care,” Smith explains. As members decide with their care coordinator that they need to transition into assisted living or a long-term care facility, atHome Together also would arrange and pay for that care. “It’s a way to access care

with today’s dollars,” Smith explains. She says the program is ideal for solo agers or for aging couples who don’t want to become a burden on their adult children. “ We tend to only think of senior living facilities in a crisis, so this is a whole different mindset for seniors,” Plante says. “I think this is an amazing program and I’m shouting it to the rooftops

hen it comes to Rhode Island restaurants, Jamestown’s Beech is about as legendar y as it gets in the Ocean State. Sultr y seascapes and the harbor are never far from view, and you can always smell the water. Set in the shadow of a 131-year-old American copper beech tree, the dappled light provides the tone for a sublime dining experience. The rest falls to the kitchen – and these days, that kitchen has a familiar name at the helm.

James Beard Award-winning Michael Schlow is a celebrated American chef, with a list of accolades and TV appearances as long as his apron. Schlow, known for restaurants in Boston and Washington, DC, as well as at Foxwoods, has joined Beech as chef and managing partner, bringing a distinctly personal philosophy to the Conanicut Island dining scene. Schlow is helping shape the next chapter of a restaurant that has been part of the community for decades (it was formerly Simpatico and Trattoria Simpatico). For Schlow, the decision to come to Jamestown was less about expanding his restaurant empire and more about following a place and people he already loved. “I’ve been coming to Jamestown and Newport for many, many years and have lots of wonderful friends and colleagues here,” he says. “It’s a beautiful part of the country.” When Tim Conway, one of

Beech’s owners, approached him about joining the team, Schlow says, “I jumped at the chance.” Schlow still calls Boston home, but has been spending considerably more time in Jamestown. And while the restaurant business may have taken him to many destinations, the chef says there is something about this corner of Rhode Island that feels particularly right. The Beech menu under Schlow centers on American cooking with Mediterranean influences, with an emphasis on local ingredients whenever possible. The result is the kind of food that reflects Schlow’s larger culinary philosophy: sophisticated technique without unnecessary fuss. “While I love being ‘creative,’ many times I find that great food doesn’t necessarily need my redesign,” he says. “An amazing dish is often about honoring the original concept and attempting to make it the very best version you are capable of.”

Tuna tartare

Cauliflower steak

That approach is evident in dishes such as tuna tartare with cucumbers, caviar, and spicy ponzu; mussels “Meuniere”; chicken Milanese; steak frites with bistro sauce; and homemade chitarra with spicy lobster, and shrimp diavola. There is a certain breadth to the menu, but also a sense of restraint. Schlow is interested in making food memorable, not making it complicated for the sake of being clever. That instinct was developed over a career that began remarkably early. Schlow got his first restaurant job as a dishwasher at age 14 and worked his way through virtually every position in the business, a very typical track for people in his position. Along the way, he was mentored by Jean-Louis Palladin, Pino Luongo, and Craig Shelton, three chefs he credits with helping shape both his cooking style and work ethic. But ask Schlow what a chef actually does, and the answer goes well beyond cooking. “Cooking is maybe 30 percent of the job,” he says. The rest, he explains, requires being “an accountant, an artist, a historian, a handyman, a coach, a psychologist, a designer, a buyer, a negotiator, a babysitter, a performer, and most importantly, a teacher.” At Beech, that last role is particularly important. Schlow has reunited with Jamestown native Eric Warren, who was part of Beech’s original kitchen team and now serves as executive chef. Together, they are focused not only on the food but on creating a workplace where people can learn and grow. Schlow’s approach to leadership has evolved along with the industry. The old-school kitchen stereotype – loud, intimidating , and occasionally airborne with a whole fish – is not his model. His recipe for a successful restaurant begins with clear communication, defined goals, a happy workplace, and a team of like-minded people. It is an approach that mirrors his philosophy of hospitality : Make people feel good, whether they are working in the restaurant or sitting down to dinner. That, ultimately, is what Schlow hopes Beech becomes – a place people return to not because it is the newest destination in town, but because it is the one they can count on. The restaurant has recently undergone renovations, including improvements to its second-floor Tree House space, and Schlow says more is coming : new wine and cocktail programs, themed dinners and programmed evenings designed to give guests additional reasons to gather. “Our goal is to make Beech the very best restaurant we’re capable of,” Schlow says. “Most importantly, is continuing to work side by side with all of our team members and partners to make Beech everyone’s ‘go to’ spot no matter what the occasion.” 13 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown OCTOBER 2026 | HeyRhody.com

T

he summer crowds have packed up, the autumn air has turned crisp, and Rhode Island ports are quietly delivering some of the finest catches of the year. From late-season quahogs to peak-har vest oysters and fresh-off-the-boat finfish, fall is prime time to eat local catches

and celebrate National Seafood Month. Established by Congress in 1990, National Seafood Month recognizes the importance of seafood consumption, supports local fishing communities, and encourages sustainable seafood choices. When choosing Rhode Island seafood, you are practicing one of the simplest ways

to eat sustainably by reducing food miles and lowering the carbon footprint associated with transportation and the broader seafood supply chain. When you purchase local seafood, you are also investing in local communities, working waterfronts, and helping to keep Rhode Island’s roots in seafood strong and alive.

Seafood is a big part of Ocean State culture. Rhode Island’s commercial fishing industr y has a histor y that goes back more than 350 years, with Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound, and Block Island Sound supporting local communities since the 1630’s. Today, Rhode Island has 25 active fishing ports, 1074 active commercial fishing licenses, 518 commercial quahoggers, and more than 80 aquaculture farms. In 2025, RI fishermen landed 70.7 million pounds of seafood, worth $87.1 million at the dock, representing more than 100 species. With more than 170 Rhode Island Seafood partner restaurants, markets, and other venues, our local seafood community is keeping our state’s proud fishing legacy alive, one satisf ying bite at a time.

hen the air starts to turn crisp in Little Rhody (mornings, anyway), yours truly goes in search of hot coffee drinks, heartier comfort foods, and even some decadent sweets. Luckily, I take notes the whole time so that I can share all the juicy details here. This month, there are some newbies and some new classics for your local dining pleasure.

Baked It Buns Have you heard about Rhode Island’s first specialty cinnamon rolls ? Owner and baker Samantha Turnbull’s pop -ups had folks lining up for cinnamon buns topped with strawberr y cheesecake and ooey-gooey cookie butter frosting. By the time you read this, she will have opened her storefront in the Knightsville neighborhood, and you’ll be able to pick up ever ything from The OG (buns with icing ) to gourmet versions like Nutella banana and coffee mocha. Cranston

Cafe Amore They had me at hello with their mission statement: Made With Love, Served Like Family. This darling cafe on Armistice Boulevard owned and operated by Heather Gwynn, has everything from fresh juices, specialty lattes, and omelets to stuffed waffles, breakfast burritos, and churro crunch French toast. It’s a destination for a delicious breakfast, brunch, or lunch and community, which was Gwynn’s dream when she opened the cafe in 2025. Pawtucket

Open since August and already causing Rhode Islanders to “travel” all the way to Little Compton, Adam and Kaitlin Donahue named their new restaurant after their daughter Elsie (also a play on the town name – “LC”). Housed in the former Commons Restaurant and open for breakfast and lunch, I highly recommend the pancakes, johnnycakes, and grilled muffins – baked fresh on-site. Little Compton

This new-ish cafe and market, founded by Chelsea Berr y and Jill Page in Ashaway, truly has something for ever yone. Whether you’re in dire need of a pumpkin spice latte, a breakfast sandwich, or lunch and an autumnal treat, or authentic Portug uese olive oil, pasta from Italy, and an Ashaway sweatshirt, they have you covered. Don’t sleep on this village jewel. Ashaway

For cider-aficionados, Labor Day has meant a trek to Jamestown, but Rob and Jaclyn Swanson announced that they have moved to a permanent location in West Greenwich. So, if you’re craving their hot mulled apple cider, sweet cider, cold cider slushies or those melt-in-yourmouth cider donuts, head to their farm at 930 Hopkins Hill Road. (I hear they’re coming out with a hard cider soon, too!) West Greenwich

Honeybird Kitchen and Cocktails Fall is the ideal time to tuck into some comfort food at this Southern-inspired eater y in Rumford. In another lifetime it was a ser vice station, but now people motor over for outstanding crispy fried chicken, and scrumptious sides like cornbread with honey butter, pimento mac and cheese, and sweet potato tots, courtesy of Chef Nick Rabar, a James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist for Best Chef : Northeast. In The Pink Folks in Narragansett now understand the buzz first-hand about In The Pink in Providence. Brianna and Chris Cancel have opened a second location of their acai and smoothie cafe, directly across from Celeste. It’s a modern paradise open year-round with plenty of style and an expanded menu that includes bagels, toasts, breakfast sandwiches, paninis, wraps, coffee drinks, and more. Narragansett

Stoneacre Brassiere If you haven’t sampled the twice-baked potato with a side of caviar at this gorgeous, French-inspired eater y, then you are indeed missing out. We’re talking a warm baked potato with a butter-andGruyere cheese filling , topped with crème fraiche, and finished with a side of caviar. This Washing ton Square brasserie also boasts a wine list recognized by Wine Spectator magazine and a farm-to table menu of fabulous fare. Newport

ne of the first signs of fall in New England is the appearance of the King Richard’s Faire billboard along Interstate 195 East. For Serina Bowen, the Renaissance-themed extravaganza inspired her to make a special cicada cake for her family’s annual trip to the event. “We’ve been attending since I was 13, and it’s the one big event I look forward to every year, so of course we go all-out,” begins Bowen, originally from the mountains of western Massachusetts, and currently living in the forests of Burrillville. “I decorated the cake to celebrate the emergence of the cicadas. I find there’s comfort in having recurring recipes, especially ones grounded in the seasons. My traditions just happen to celebrate my macabre interests and the dual emergence of cicadas.” In a palette of mocha, the dessert is made in three parts: the spice cake, the maple glaze, and the chocolate cicadas. “When I can, I get my fresh produce and, in this recipe’s case, Chepachet Farms pure maple syrup from my friends at Mapleville Farm, and many of my herbs and spices at Farmacy Herbs in Providence,” says Bowen, who enjoys making creepy treats – like town villager meat packages, strawberry rats, and molasses cookies strewn with confectionary cobwebs – all month long. “My love for Halloween probably stems from my devotion to crafting mixed with my adoration of autumn. It’s the time of year when creativity and morbid curiosity have societal permission to run rampant, and I love seeing entire communities come together to simply have some fun. I don’t want to say Halloween is my personality, but if you get me started on ghost stories, folklore, or dark Victorian-era practices, be forewarned,” Bowen says with a grin. When she’s not whipping up bugs in the kitchen, jewelry photographer-by-day Bowen explores the state on weekends. “Rhode Island also has an abundance of festivals to get you in the cozy autumn spirit, including Apple Fest and the Pagan Pride Day Festival, both in Johnston, Norman Bird Sanctuary’s Har vest Fair in Middletown, and the Wickford Witches Paddle. All of these events are the perfect opportunity to grab a hot apple cider, explore local businesses, and experience a true New England October. However, I’m still fairly new to the area and have a lot more to discover.” This year, Bowen is eager to experience Bathsheba’s Woods and Haunted Gallows in Burrillville, and she cites strolling Swan Point Cemetery as a favorite activity. “It has the perfect ratio of trees, old tombstones, and if you’re lucky, some wildlife weaving throughout.” Follow Bowen along on Instagram at @inbowensbones.

Glaze

Cardamom Cake

1. While cooling , combine all the ingredients for the glaze and whisk until smooth. Add more powdered sugar or milk to adjust the consistency (it should be about the consistency of molasses).

• 1½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan • 1½ tsp baking powder • ½ tsp salt • ½ tsp cardamom • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature • ½ cup sugar • 2 large eggs, room temperature • 2 tsp vanilla extract • ½ cup plus 2 tbsp whole milk

2. Pour the glaze over the cake, making sure it is coated entirely, and let set for at least 10 minutes.

Cicadas

Maple Spice Glaze • 2 cups confectioners sugar, sifted • 2 tsp vanilla extract • ½ tsp five spice • ¼ tsp nutmeg • ¼ tsp allspice • 3 tbsp pure maple syrup • 2-3 tbsp whole milk

1. To make the cicadas’ bodies, microwave the sweetened condensed milk for 30 seconds on high. Sift in cocoa powder and a dash of salt and mix until combined.

CHOCOLATE CICADAS

3. When firmed up, pinch off about 1 tsp of the dough and form a tapered log shape, 1½-2 inches long. Roll in cocoa powder and make two curved indents in the middle to create the bug’s segments (sort of like a knuckle), with three horizontal lines on one side of the segment. Repeat for as many cicadas (or any other creepy crawlies) as you want (I made a total of 10 for my cake).

• ⅓ cup sweetened condensed milk • ½ cup cocoa powder • Dash of salt (optional) • ¾ cup dark chocolate chips • Edible glitter (optional)

ST EPS Cake 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 2. Adhere a round of parchment paper to the bottom of an 8-inch round cake pan with butter/ cooking spray, then grease and flour the entire pan. 3. Mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cardamom in a medium bowl and set aside. 4. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, then the vanilla extract. 5. Mix in the flour mixture in three portions, alternating with milk until smooth. 6. Pour the batter into the cake pan and bake for 30-34 minutes until pale golden brown. 7. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes, then invert onto a cooling rack and let sit until cooled completely.

2. Scoop this mixture into a sheet of plastic wrap, cover and freeze for 30 minutes.

4. To make the wings, temper the chocolate by microwaving a half cup of chocolate chips at 30-second intervals until just melted and mix in the remainder of chips until just melted. Note: over-heating will cause the chocolate to not temper, so err on the side of caution, but make sure all the lumps are out, or your piping bag will clog. 5. Add melted chocolate to a sandwich or piping bag, cut off a very small corner of the bag (about 1 cm) and pipe large and small teardrop shapes onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Fill the teardrops with more small teardrop shapes to make a lacy pattern (see reference). 6. Let sit at room temperature until solidified, then brush on edible glitter (optional). Make small holes in sides of cicada bodies and insert the wings (larger in front, smaller in back) 7. Top the cake with cicadas and enjoy a perfectly spooky Halloween dessert! Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
