Importance of Building Skills: Message from PROPEL Career Coach Ellen Ades When we admire women, like those described in our “30 Under Thirty” section, we are savoring, albeit vicariously, the shiny side of success; the rewards of sustained effort over time.
Even the most dazzling success story often begins with a humble first step. Now is the time to keep that in mind. Gaining skills and accumulating knowledge now will add resilience to your success plan for the future.
PROPEL will partner with you to build skills regardless of your level of expertise.

COOKIE CHERA COHEN Co-founder CocoBox
Cookie Chera Cohen is the co-founder of CocoBox. Cookie founded the company in her sophomore year of college at New York University while studying to be a dietician. After seeing clients on her own, she found a common theme: most clients had a difficult time creating healthy dishes on their own. CocoBox was started as a way for people to create delicious meals without all the guesswork. Cookie’s goal is to create even more products to make eating healthy a hobby, not a chore. When asked how she balances work and life, she said: “I wouldn’t say balance! I’m still learning. Carrying a baby in one hand while on the phone with retailers and employees is not easy and something I’m still learning how to balance.”

As a little girl, Eileen always found herself helping out in the kitchen. While most kids were watching the Disney Channel, she was watching the Food Network. Throughout the years, Eileen watched her mother and grandmothers cook and took in their methods. At 16-years-old, she started “Miss Sweets,” her healthy baked-goods business. Kardio and Kale, her food blogger account, emerged when people started asking for her recipes. Companies began contacting Eileen for recipe development and people were asking her to teach cooking classes — and even cook for them. “Being your own boss is challenging because you have to make the decisions, no one else is going to do it for you,” she explained. “You end up becoming a lady with eight arms and ten legs and still manage to get it done.” Even though Eileen is constantly on a tight work schedule, she’s thankful for loving what she does. As a mother of two, Renee is constantly balancing her work and family life. Renee challenges herself, the same way she does in her job, to be the best mom to her kids.

during quarantine to air my grievances about Zoom speed-dating. I gained viewers after using humor and honesty to depict my experiences. I brought on single guys to interview them about their dating lives and 300 viewers quickly turned into 1300. It became an overnight success. Now I use my shows to raise money for charity while entertaining our community at home.
Lee Zebede wanted to be in the fitness industry from a young age. Since high school, she’s been passionate about working out and eating healthy, but never thought she could turn that into a career. When one of Lee’s favorite Pilates studios reached out to her with a job offer, she accepted and worked there for six years. From there, she auditioned for an instructor position at SLT, one of the biggest megaformer studios in the world. Shortly after her audition, they knew she was a fit. “When I was 12-years-old, I started working at the Sephardic Community Center where I planned plays, charity events, fashion shows, parties and so much more. At the age of 18, with my organizational skills and planning experience, I started a business called Party Expressions. I planned brises, sweet sixteens, sebets, birthday celebrations, anniversaries, and even attempted to open a party supply store in New Jersey. Summer was approaching and I was serious with my husband-to-be Mike. I asked him, “Are you in or are you out?” He replied, “I cannot be married to someone who works nights and weekends.” Back then, it was not in vogue for a woman in our community to work. I closed the business and lost all the money that I had invested in the store. Early on in my marriage, I was working for my father planning events. My creative juices were always flowing and, when an old friend called me to plan an event, 47 • The Propel List
Event Planner @normacohenproductions
I explained to my husband that I wasn’t happy simply working parttime for my father. I wanted my own business and Norma Cohen Productions was born – that was over thirty years ago. My husband and my family have been by my side the entire journey and they are my biggest fans. Over the years, I have evolved as a professional. I went from simply organizing events to designing and producing events. I have produced weddings and social events of all kinds in New York’s most iconic spaces and the most luxurious destinations world-wide, including Europe and the Caribbean. My experiences as an event planner are sometimes met with challenges. For example, at 27-years-old, while planning a bar mitzvah at Maxim’s on Madison Avenue, I received an urgent message that the electrical panel had shorted and the entire 60-story building was in a blackout. The caterer, wait staff, florist,
photographer and band members were all going up and down the dark staircases to get the job done. It was my father who saved the day and sent over an electrician. I learned always to have an electrician on call for future events. Mistakes are great to learn from! The next day, I planned a one-ofa-kind, magnificent engagement party and felt underappreciated when I did not receive even a ‘thank you’ from the host. After the disappointment from these two events, I decided that I was done planning events. Then one of my mentors from the Center called me to plan his daughter’s wedding. After explaining to him that I had quit the business yesterday, he replied, “well now you’re back in business.” I wouldn’t be who I am today if I gave up. If someone feels like giving up on a business, please call me first! Obstacles make you better and you should never give up on your dreams.”

Surrat Beauty Co-Founder @helyne_mishan_tamir “I wake up around 6:30am and get my four children ready and off to school. I always make time for 20 minutes of morning meditation and then morning prayers to ground myself for the day. When my youngest leaves at 8:30 am, I drive from my home in NJ to the city. I grab my second cup of coffee on the walk over to the office from the parking lot and take meetings with the team until about 3:00/4:00. I try to leave early enough to get home and do the evening routine with as little pressure as possible. I make dinner, do homework/bath time, and am typically done by 11:00 pm. Until PROPEL, there wasn’t a place where Syrian women could go to receive career guidance with the understanding that we have expectations at home. Throughout my entire career, there has never been a woman in my specific position that I could look to for mentorship. My mother worked on and off but she was primarily a homemaker. When there is no model and you are paving a path on your own, it’s more challenging. I overcame these obstacles by staying true to my path and never giving up on creating a beautiful home as well as a fulfilling career.”

I started the Nest Fund which helps me achieve that through my business. My ultimate goal is to own and design a big chain of hotels around the world. I want to be published in big magazines, eat up the industry, and win awards. I want to be a role model for the younger generation. Excessiveness doesn’t make you happy; it’s what you achieve on your own that brings happiness. Of course money matters, but what really makes me hustle is wanting to encourage my family and community, and the dream of a business that can be passed down to the next generation.”

Women’s Wear Daily Digital Director @sophiachabbott
Today, as Digital Director of WWD, I’m looking at the big picture. So yes, it’s fashion and beauty, but it’s more about scaling a 100-plus-year-old media company in the digital age. Having the institutional history of having started my career at WWD, I understand the brand’s values. I’m charged with growing WWD audience across all digital platforms. More often than not, the feeling of wanting to give it all up was a sign that I’d hit my goal and needed to dream some more, and dream bigger. It’s important to set outcomes and strive towards them. Once you hit the goal, it’s time to set another, more challenging one. Growing up in the community has its advantages like being exposed to entrepreneurs in various industries and having so many mentors and leaders that are happy to connect with you. I knew that I “made it” when I was walking up the steps of the Met Gala for the first time was “pretty extra”. Have you ever been in a room with Beyonce and JLo? It’s a lot. I’m still recovering.
